Abstract (sommario):

Historians of pragmatism have long overlooked Kenneth Burke and Richard McKeon. This has not been without good reason. At first glance, the two read more like critics than adherents of the tradition. Yet placing Burke and McKeon's writings from the 1920s to the late 1950s in the context of their development reveals a shared project aimed at reforming pragmatism. While pragmatists such as John Dewey and Sidney Hook alleged a conceptual fidelity between the scientific method and democratic processes such as public debate, Burke and McKeon questioned this link. Metaphors drawn from science, they believed, blinded pragmatists to the nature of communication. Due to this oversight, pragmatists ignored the ideological ambiguity that surrounded terms like “science” and “democracy” during the mid-twentieth century. Burke and McKeon sought to fix this omission. Pragmatists, they argued, needed to trade the language of science for a terminology drawn from a source more attuned to the power of communication: the arts. By advancing this case, Burke and McKeon crafted an aesthetic form of pragmatism—a variant of the philosophy that, ultimately, contemporaries would barely recognize as such.

This essay builds on M. McKeon’s premises in The Origins of the English Novel (1987) in order to explore how Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, Or Virtue Rewarded and Henry Fielding’s Joseph Andrews struggle to diminish social and cultural instabilities that persisted in the fluctuating attitudes, namely; the aristocratic, progressive and conservative, towards the individual’s honor in their respective social orders. The novels supposedly, according to McKeon, set to resolve these instabilities; however, the essay underscores the novels’ inability to effectively achieve this objective. The essay demonstrates that both Pamela and Joseph Andrews instead internalized the ideological instability as they failed to uphold distinct reformative perspective at the expense of the other. The novels are usually read as culprits of progressive ideals; that is, they advocate for assessing individuals’ worth according to their actions rather than their lineage, which aristocracy historically instilled as a criterion. However, the essay illustrates how the novels simultaneously exhibit the persistence of that conservative model, recycling of aristocracy, which defines people’s honor based on their nurture.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract Background: CCTG MA38 (NCT02630693) was a randomized phase II clinical trial that evaluated the efficacy of 2 dose schedules of palbociclib [100mg PO on continuous daily dose (CDD)] compared to 125mg PO daily for 3 weeks on/1 week off (STD) along with physician-choice of endocrine therapy in patients with ER+, HER- metastatic breast cancer (MBC) in the second-line setting. The final analysis indicated that palbociclib had comparable efficacy, safety and QOL for both treatment arms (SABCS 2018, abstr PD1-10). Our lab has reported that IL-8 was highly expressed by primary human breast cancers, and that higher pretreatment plasma IL-8 was significantly correlated with elevated bone resorption in HR+MBC patients (Kamalakar A et al. Bone 61:176-85, 2014). Most recently, our lab has reported that elevated serum IL-8 predicts for significantly reduced OS in 3 large metastatic cohorts of pancreatic (ASCO 2019, abstr 4131), prostate (ASCO 2020, abstr e17565) and breast cancer patients (ASCO 2020, abstr 1067). In this retrospective study, we investigated the prognostic value of pretreatment plasma IL-8 in CCTG MA38. Methods: 123 patients enrolled in MA38 were analyzed in this retrospective biomarker study. Serum IL-8 levels were measured using the ELLA immunoassay platform (ProteinSimple, San Jose, CA). Kaplan-Meier analysis and log-rank test were used to correlate plasma IL-8 levels with OS and progression-free survival (PFS). Results: In the total study cohort, pretreatment plasma IL-8 concentration had a median of 11.10 pg/ml, and 25% and 75% interquartiles of 7.36 and 15.00 pg/ml, respectively. In univariate analysis higher plasma IL-8 was a significant adverse biomarker for reduced PFS as a continuous variable (p = 0.01), at the median cutpoint (HR= 1.55, p=0.042), and in quartile cutpoints (HR=2.28, p=0.03, Q4 vs Q1). For OS, higher plasma IL-8 also trended significant for reduced OS at the median cutpoint (HR= 1.66, p=0.10). In multivariate analysis, higher plasma IL-8 also trended significant for reduced PFS (HR= 1.47, p=0.094). Conclusions: In the CCTG MA.38 trial, higher pre-treatment plasma IL-8 level was associated with reduced PFS, and is therefore an adverse prognostic biomarker for reduced outcome to the CDK 4/6 inhibitor palbociclib. Anti-IL-8 therapy combined with CDK 4/6 inhibitors should be evaluated in future trials to improve outcome in patients with higher circulating IL-8. Abstract OBJECTIVES To compare the long-term overall survival and outcomes of patients with oesophageal squamous cell cancer treated with minimally invasive McKeown or Ivor Lewis oesophagectomy. METHODS A multicentre, non-interventional, retrospective, observational study was performed in oesophageal squamous cell cancer patients pathologically confirmed with stage IA–IIIB middle or lower thoracic tumours who underwent minimally invasive oesophagectomy between 1 January 2010 and 30 June 2017 in 7 hospitals in China. Cox proportional hazards models assessed factors associated with overall survival and disease recurrence. The primary outcome was overall survival and cancer recurrence; the secondary outcomes included number of lymph nodes resected, 30-day mortality and postoperative complications. RESULTS A total of 1540 patients were included (950 McKeown, 590 Ivor Lewis). The mean age was 61.6 years, and 1204 were male. The mean number of lymph nodes removed during the McKeown procedure was 21.2 ± 11.4 compared with 14.8 ± 8.9 in Ivor Lewis patients (P < 0.001). The 5-year overall survival rates were 67.9% (McKeown) and 55.0% (Ivor Lewis). McKeown oesophagectomy was associated with improved overall survival (Ivor Lewis versus McKeown hazard ratio 1.36, 95% confidence interval 1.11–1.66; P = 0.003), particularly in patients with stage T3 tumours (middle thoracic oesophagus). However, postoperative complications occurred more frequently following McKeown oesophagectomy (42.2% vs 17.6% Ivor Lewis; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Minimally invasive McKeown oesophagectomy was associated with improved overall survival and a decreased risk of disease recurrence, while Ivor Lewis patients had fewer postoperative complications. McKeown oesophagectomy may represent the optimal technique for patients with stage T3 tumours. Clinical trial registration: clinicaltrial.gov NCT03428074

4509 Background: Robust evidence is lacking whether Ivor Lewis minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) or McKeown MIE should be preferred for patients with mid to distal esophageal or gastro-esophageal junction Siewert I-II (GEJ) cancer. Methods: In this multicenter randomized controlled trial, patients with esophageal (below the level of the carina) or GEJ cancer planned for curative resection were recruited. Eligible patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to either Ivor Lewis MIE or McKeown MIE. The primary endpoint was anastomotic leakage (AL) requiring endoscopic, radiologic or surgical intervention. Secondary outcome parameters were overall AL rate, postoperative complications, length of stay and mortality. Results: A total of 262 patients were randomly assigned to Ivor Lewis MIE (n = 130) or McKeown MIE (n = 132). Seventeen patients were excluded from the trial due to not meeting inclusion criteria (n = 2), physical unfitness for surgery (n = 3), patients’ choice (n = 3), interval metastases (n = 5) or peroperative metastases (n = 4). AL necessitating reintervention occurred in 15 (12.3%) of 122 patients after Ivor Lewis MIE and in 39 (31.7%) of 123 patients after McKeown MIE (relative risk 0.39, 95% CI 0.22-0.65; risk difference 19.4%, 95% CI 7.9%-31.8%). Overall AL rate was 12.3% after Ivor Lewis MIE and 34.1% after McKeown MIE. Severe complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ 3b) were observed in 10.7% after Ivor Lewis MIE and in 22.0% after McKeown MIE. Pleural effusion requiring drainage occurred in 9.8% of patients after Ivor Lewis MIE and 21.1% of patients after McKeown MIE. RLN palsy rate was 0% after Ivor Lewis MIE and 7.3% after McKeown MIE. Median length of hospital stay was 10 days (IQR 8 – 15 days) after Ivor Lewis MIE and 12 days (IQR 9 – 18 days) after McKeown MIE. ICU length of stay and mortality rates were comparable between groups. Conclusions: These findings provide evidence for a lower rate of AL requiring reintervention after Ivor Lewis MIE compared to McKeown MIE for patients with mid to distal esophageal or GEJ cancer. Abstract (sommario):

The work in this thesis uses geometric dynamical systems methods to derive phase equations for networks of weakly connected McKean relaxation oscillators. Importantly, this particular single neuron model, with appropriate modifications, is shown to mimic very closely the behaviour of the more biophysically complicated Hodgkin-Huxley model, whilst remaining analytically tractable (albeit in some singular limit). We consider realistic forms of axo-dendritic synaptic coupling with chemical synapses modelled as the convolution of some input spike train with an appropriate temporal kernel. Using explicit forms for the phase response curves (PRCs), for a range of single neuron models, we are able to derive explicit formulas for the phase interaction function in an arbitrary synaptically interacting network of neural oscillators. The PRC for the McKean model is calculated exactly, whilst those for other models is found numerically. In both cases we make extensive use of Fourier representations for synaptic currents, to investigate the effects of axonal, synaptic and dendritic delays on the existence and stability of phase-locked states.

Alpine glaciers have been referred to as "buzzsaws" on the grounds that they control the topographic development of actively deforming mountain ranges; however, the nature of the linkage between glacial erosion and topography in different tectonic and climatic settings remains unclear. In the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, an intracontinental mountain range with dramatically lower annual precipitation than previously studied ranges, distinct spatial variations in morphology resulting from Quaternary glaciation coincide with different exhumation histories that were derived using apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronology. The northwestern region had cooling ages of 3-10 Ma over an elevation range of 1300 m, moderate correlation between mean elevation and glacial thresholds, and regionally high values for relief and slope above cirque floors. The southern region, by contrast, had cooling ages of 19-32 Ma over an elevation range of 800 m, no correlation between mean elevation and glacial thresholds, and low values for relief and slope above cirque floors. The average magnitude of incision into a reconstructed maximum topography surface is nearly equal for the two study regions suggesting that the effects of glacial erosion are localized to high topography. The northwestern and southern regions show little variation in climate and fluvial and hillslope erosive potential, which implies that erosionally induced isostatic rebound is an unlikely source for the difference in cooling ages. Instead, I infer that active tectonism (possibly related to the Aspen anomaly) is responsible for different cooling ages and drove the greater degree of glacial modification of the northwestern region. As a result of the spatial variability in epeirogenic uplift, the San Juan Mountains appear to be both a mountain range that was just high enough to be glaciated, the southern region, and a mountain range where glacial erosion controls the elevation of high topography, the northwestern region; and thus are a microcosm for the diverse mountain ranges of the western United States.

Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di descrivere una equazione stocastica di McKean, il Particle Method, algoritmo di tipo Monte Carlo derivante dalla fisica statistica utile per l'approssimazione della soluzione di una equazione di McKean, ed infine una loro applicazione alla finanza matematica in option pricing. Vengono mostrati risultati di esistenza e unicità di una soluzione di una equazione di McKean sotto opportune ipotesi, utilizzando anche la Metrica di Wasserstein, ed inoltre viene descritta la proprietà di propagazione del Caos, introdotta da Sznitman, utile per la dimostrazione della convergenza del Particle Method. Entrambi i concetti (McKean e Particle Method) trovano applicazione nella matematica finanza ed in particolar modo nella calibrazione di modelli a volatilità locale-stocastica. Vengono descritti tali modelli portando alcuni esempi (Modello di SABR e di Dupire-Heston) e focalizzandosi sul concetto chiave di Leverage Function, viene motivata l'introduzione di tali modelli ed infine viene data notevole attenzione al problema della calibrazione. La calibrazione di un modello a volatilità locale-stocastica richiede innanzitutto lo studio della volatilità di Dupire, della omonima equazione e del collegamento fra i coefficienti di volatilità di modelli stocastici (SV) e quelli di modelli locali (LV). La calibrazione della leverage function porta alla ricerca della soluzione di una equazione stocastica di McKean che viene approssimata attraverso il Particle Method.

Abstract (sommario):

Cette thèse étudie le contrôle optimal de la dynamique de type McKean-Vlasov et ses applications en mathématiques financières. La thèse contient deux parties. Dans la première partie, nous développons la méthode de la programmation dynamique pour résoudre les problèmes de contrôle stochastique de type McKean-Vlasov. En utilisant les contrôles admissibles appropriés, nous pouvons reformuler la fonction valeur en fonction de la loi (resp. la loi conditionnelle) du processus comme seule variable d’état et obtenir la propriété du flot de la loi (resp. la loi conditionnelle) du processus, qui permettent d’obtenir en toute généralité le principe de la programmation dynamique. Ensuite nous obtenons l’équation de Bellman correspondante, en s’appuyant sur la notion de différentiabilité par rapport aux mesures de probabilité introduite par P.L. Lions [Lio12] et la formule d’Itô pour le flot de probabilité. Enfin nous montrons la propriété de viscosité et l’unicité de la fonction valeur de l’équation de Bellman. Dans le premier chapitre, nous résumons quelques résultats utiles du calcul différentiel et de l’analyse stochastique sur l’espace de Wasserstein. Dans le deuxième chapitre, nous considérons le contrôle optimal stochastique de système à champ moyen non linéaire en temps discret. Le troisième chapitre étudie le problème de contrôle optimal stochastique d’EDS de type McKean-Vlasov sans bruit commun en temps continu où les coefficients peuvent dépendre de la loi joint de l’état et du contrôle, et enfin dans le dernier chapitre de cette partie nous nous intéressons au contrôle optimal de la dynamique stochastique de type McKean-Vlasov en présence de bruit commun en temps continu. Dans la deuxième partie, nous proposons un modèle d’allocation de portefeuille robuste permettant l’incertitude sur la rentabilité espérée et la matrice de corrélation des actifs multiples, dans un cadre de moyenne-variance en temps continu. Ce problème est formulé comme un jeu différentiel à champ moyen. Nous montrons ensuite un principe de séparation pour le problème associé. Nos résultats explicites permettent de justifier quantitativement la sous-diversification, comme le montrent les études empiriques
This thesis deals with the study of optimal control of McKean-Vlasov dynamics and its applications in mathematical finance. This thesis contains two parts. In the first part, we develop the dynamic programming (DP) method for solving McKean-Vlasov control problem. Using suitable admissible controls, we propose to reformulate the value function of the problem with the law (resp. conditional law) of the controlled state process as sole state variable and get the flow property of the law (resp. conditional law) of the process, which allow us to derive in its general form the Bellman programming principle. Then by relying on the notion of differentiability with respect to probability measures introduced by P.L. Lions [Lio12], and Itô’s formula along measure-valued processes, we obtain the corresponding Bellman equation. At last we show the viscosity property and uniqueness of the value function to the Bellman equation. In the first chapter, we summarize some useful results of differential calculus and stochastic analysis on the Wasserstein space. In the second chapter, we consider the optimal control of nonlinear stochastic dynamical systems in discrete time of McKean-Vlasov type. The third chapter focuses on the stochastic optimal control problem of McKean-Vlasov SDEs without common noise in continuous time where the coefficients may depend upon the joint law of the state and control. In the last chapter, we are interested in the optimal control of stochastic McKean-Vlasov dynamics in the presence of common noise in continuous time.In the second part, we propose a robust portfolio selection model, which takes into account ambiguity about both expected rate of return and correlation matrix of multiply assets, in a continuous-time mean-variance setting. This problem is formulated as a mean-field type differential game. Then we derive a separation principle for the associated problem. Our explicit results provide an explanation to under-diversification, as documented in empirical studies

Abstract (sommario):

College admission has become increasingly competitive in the internet era. This is especially true for the highest caliber of students and institutions. College admission is a process filled with asymmetric information. One of the biggest asymmetries occurs when schools admit students not knowing whether or not students will actually enroll. This uncertainty is economically costly to schools. As national rankings become more and more influential, schools are more sensitive to their rank and the statistics that determine them. One of these is yield, the percentage of admitted students who enroll. This paper examines data on admitted students to Claremont McKenna College and uses a probit regression to predict their enrollment decision. By successfully predicting enrollment decisions schools can eliminate some information asymmetry and therefore raise their yield.

In this paper, we study questions related to the existence and multiplicity of solutions to problems of Ambrosetti-Prodi type. We present the conjecture of Lazer- McKenna, checking its validity in the one dimensional case. To obtain our results, we use essentially topological, variational and sub and supersolution methods.
Neste trabalho, estudamos questões relacionadas à existência e multiplicidade de soluções para problemas do tipo Ambrosetti-Prodi. Apresentamos a conjectura de Lazer-McKenna, verificando sua validade no caso unidimensional. Na obtenção de nosso resultados, utilizamos essencialmente métodos topológicos, variacionais e de sub e supersolução.

Abstract (sommario):

In this thesis, we study time-inhomogeneous and McKean-Vlasov type stochastic differential equations (SDEs), along with related partial differential equations (PDEs). We are particularly interested in regularity estimates and their applications to numerical methods. In the first part of the thesis, we build on the work of Kusuoka \& Stroock to develop sharp estimates on the derivatives of solutions to time-inhomogeneous parabolic PDEs. The basis of these estimates is an integration by parts formula for derivatives of the solution under the UFG condition, which is weaker than the uniform Hoermander condition. This integration by parts formula is obtained using Malliavin Calculus. The formula allows us to extend the notion of classical solution to a framework where differentiability does not necessarily hold in all directions. As an application, we extend the error analysis for the cubature on Wiener space method to time-inhomogeneous stochastic differential equations. We then present two cubature on Wiener space algorithms for the numerical solution of McKean-Vlasov SDEs with smooth scalar interaction. The analysis involves the regularity estimates proved previously and takes place under a uniform strong Hoermander condition. Finally, we develop integration by parts formulas on Wiener space for solutions of SDEs with general McKean-Vlasov interaction and uniformly elliptic coefficients. These formulas hold both for derivatives with respect to a real variable and derivatives with respect to a measure in the sense of Lions. This allows us to develop estimates on the density of solutions of the McKean-Vlasov SDEs. We also prove the existence of a classical solution to a related PDE with irregular terminal condition.

This thesis observes sustainability on college campuses, specifically examining Claremont Mckenna College (CMC) as a case study. The question that this research paper explores is: how can we apply an integrative approach, one that integrates biophysical, economic, and social factors, to sustainability at CMC? The objectives of this paper are to (1) outline the history of sustainability on college campuses in the U.S. and define an integrative approach through a review of current literature; (2) explore CMC’s past and current sustainability initiatives from policies, reports, events, and interviews; (3) capture various community members’ perspectives on campus sustainability through surveys and interviews with students, faculty, and staff members; and (4) discuss the barriers and areas that need work at CMC and how an integrative approach can be applied as a solution. Thus, this thesis will track CMC’s progress in sustainability and give feedback as to the areas of success and areas that require work according to a working integrative framework.

AbstractEsophageal cancer is the sixth most frequent cause of cancer death worldwide and affects more than 450,000 people all over the world [1]. Most patients with esophageal cancer in Asian countries such as Japan and China have squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), while most of those in Western countries have adenocarcinoma [2, 3]. In particular, the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma in the USA and the UK is rapidly increasing, in which the age-adjusted incidence has risen by 39·6% for men and 37·5% for women every 5 years in the UK [3]. Despite improvements in surgical techniques and perioperative management [4, 5] and surgery combined with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy [6, 7], the prognosis of esophageal cancer at advanced stage remains poor with 30–40% in a 5-year survival globally [8] and the 5-year survival rate for the patients receiving esophagectomy in Japan was 55.5% [9].

Vernier acuity is a hyperacuity task which involves the ability to perceive a disparity in the relative location of two elements of a target. The term hyperacuity was coined by Gerald Westheimer because thresholds to these targets are substantially lower than thresholds to Snellen type targets (minimum resolvable acuity). Practiced normal observers can detect vernier offsets of 2 to 10 seconds of arc, compared with normal Snellen thresholds of 30 to 60 seconds of arc. (Westheimer, 1981). Vernier acuity determinations require striatal integration of information from adjacent or overlapping receptive fields (Braddick, 1984; McKee and Levi, 1987; Westheimer and McKee, 1977).
