Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT:In her account of a debate held at Princeton University between herself and Peter Singer, the lawyer and disability rights activist Harriet McBryde Johnson criticizes the ‘terrible purity of Singer's vision’. Although she certainly disagrees with the substance of Singer's arguments concerning disability and infanticide, this remark is best understood as a critique of their form. In this paper, I attempt to make sense of this critique. I argue that Singer's characteristic mode of argument, with its appeal to a universal, neutral point of view, makes it impossible for McBryde Johnson to give voice to her particular experience and thus obscures her humanity. In order to clarify the positive contribution that an appeal to particular experience may make to moral reasoning, I draw a parallel with the transformative effects of the experience of beauty, arguing that McBryde Johnson's writing ought to be regarded as both morally and philosophically instructive.

Abstract (sommario):
Our interests have focused on the investigation and development of biosensors that use chemically selective membranes to measure the concentration of specific species in complex media. One fundamental idea is that protein, which can bind selectively to a specific organic or biochemical species, can be incorporated into an ordered lipid or surfactant membrane assembly such that selective binding events lead to changes in the structure of the membrane (transduction) that can be measured quantitatively. The primary advantage of this method of detection is that it is applicable to interactions of enzymes, antibodies, receptors, and lectins, and it may be extended to investigations of DNA/RNA hybridization. This detection method therefore provides a sensitive generic strategy for sensor applications. The central problem to be solved is how the alteration of the structure of a membrane that is caused by binding events of protein or genetic material can give rise to an analytical signal. We have been focusing our efforts in the areas of fluorescence spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. The electrochemical methods rely on detection in changes of the permeability of membranes to ions and provide systems with very low background signal, leading to the possibility of detection of single molecular-binding events. Fluorescent systems operate on the basis that a chemically selective membrane containing a fluorescent indicator can provide an analytical signal caused by the change of the structure of the membrane due to the binding events. Keywords: fluorescence, lipid membrane, electrochemistry, receptor, biosensor.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes the chemistry presented during the W.A.E. McBryde Medal address given at the 81st Chemistry in Canada Conference held in Whistler. The narrative chronicles our Quest to perform isotopic separations in the solution phase using as our Excalibur, capillary zone electrophoresis. The narrative takes you through the highs of our early success in separating 35Cl- and 37Cl-. This separation was achieved by adjusting the electroosmotic flow to be equal in magnitude but opposite in direction to the chloride mobility. The narrative then takes you through the dark days, when we could not extend the isotopic separations to cationic species or even explain why there was an isotopic effect on mobility. Since those dark days, we have made numerous discoveries that have aided our Quest. Firstly, the development of mixed surfactant wall coating procedures yielded control of the reversed electroosmotic flow. This control enabled us to perform isotopic separations of systems such as 15N-/14N-aniline and 15NH4+/14NH4+. In terms of understanding electrophoretic mobility, we demonstrate the importance of dielectric friction to mobility. Further, the effect of ionic strength in capillary zone electrophoresis is explained using the Pitts treatment, which is analogous to the extended Debye-Hückel equation for ionic activity. So, have we completed our Quest? Read on.Key words: capillary zone electrophoresis, isotopic, electroosmotic flow, mobility modeling, ionic strength.

McBride, Judith B. "How do I, a teacher-researcher, contribute to knowledge of teacher learning and practice in teacher education as I explore my values through self-study?" Thesis, McGill University, 2005. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=85190.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Stories told of and by teacher-researchers hold the potential to inform members of both academic and school communities with concerns about teaching and learning. The author's self-study and an embedded case study constitute this thesis. The latter is an instrumental, single-case (Stake, 1998), seeking to offer insight into teacher learning. It is framed by theories of cognition (Sternberg, 1998), adult learning (Mezirow, 1991), narrative (Gudmundsdottir, 1995), teacher-research (Connelly & Clandinin, 1999), and self-study (Hamilton, 1998). This thesis presents my experience as a teacher-researcher engaging in self-study, asking: "What do I care about in education?" (Whitehead, 1993).
In conducting my inquiry, I have become interested in knowing the following: (1) What have I learned? (2) How do I represent my learning? (3) How shall I take my learning forward?
Learning is understood to mean "the process of using a prior interpretation to construe a new or revised interpretation of the meaning of one's experience in order to guide future action" (Mezirow, 1998, p. 6), and is seen in terms of improvement to professional practice. In examining the self-study report of my colleague, Nancy, the question "How is learning evidenced in the narrative report of the teacher-researcher engaging in self-study?" is addressed. A claim is made that, as teachers engage with questions about what they care about in education, they are learning. Data for my self-study include narrative accounts, artifacts, and images. Data for the embedded case include a co-constructed narrative account, photographs, a tape-recorded conversation, and interview and concept map collected between January 2000 and July 2003. Narrative data in the embedded case study were subjected to inductive and deductive analyses. Confirmatory evidence was sought in the conversation and interview, which were analyzed similarly, and the concept map, which was interrogated deductively. It may be seen that the stories of teacher-researchers inquiring into practice offer evidence of transformative learning (Mezirow, 1991), which may initiate and constitute living educational theory (Whitehead, 1993), and provide insights to those with interests in teacher education.

Holmes, Janel L. "The Color of Memory: Reimagining the Antebellum South in Works by James McBride Through the use of Free Indirect Discourse". VCU Scholars Compass, 2016. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4220.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the use of interior narrative techniques such as free indirect discourse and internal monologue in two of James McBride’s neo-slave narratives, Song Yet Sung (2008) and The Good Lord Bird (2013). Very limited critical attention has been given to these neo-slave narratives that illustrate McBrides attention to characterization and focalized narration. In these narratives McBride builds upon the revelations he explores in his bestselling memoir, The Color of Water (1996, 2006), where he learns to disassociate race and character. What he discovers about not only his mother, but also himself, inspires his re-imagination of the people who lived during the antebellum period. His use of interior narrative techniques deviates from his peers’ conventional approach to the neo-slave narrative. His exploration of the psyche demonstrates a focalized attention to the individual, rather than a characterization of the community, which is typically portrayed in neo-slave narratives. In conclusion, this thesis argues that James McBride’s neo-slave narratives reveal his interest in deconstructing the hierarchal positioning of whites and blacks during the antebellum period in order to communicate that although African Americans were the intended victims, slave masters and mistresses were oppressed by the ideologies of slavery as well.

Abstract (sommario):
Passing, both standard and reverse, is the process of changing ethnicity. The methodology of reverse passing varies, but claiming "no color" is ineffective in fact and fiction as can be seen in James McBride's The Color of Water, Shirlee Taylor Haizlip's The Sweeter the Juice, Danzy Senna's Caucasia, and Rosellen Brown's Half a Heart. The characters in these texts attempt indefinite ethnicity by denying color and are prone to restlessness and failure until they accept racial duality.

Abstract (sommario):
Methods used for correction and modeling of frequency response of sound devices are discussed in this paper. Besides classic methods of digital filter design, more advanced and complex numerial methods are reviewed, Prony and Steiglitz-McBride in particular. This paper focuses on structure utilizing parallel sections of second-order IIR filters. Methods for calculating coefficients of this structure are presented and later implemented. For selected method, utilizing dual frequency warping, an interative algorithm for automatic calculation of parameters necessary to filter design is implemented - so called Particle Swarm Optimization. Six ways of evaluation filter design precision are presented and the results are compared. Functions realizing filter design are implemented in C++, MATLAB and Python. A VST module simulating the filter in real time is also provided.

Eames, Eric M. "Monarch Cheers, Integration Whimpers, and a Loyalty Conflict: Kansas City Call's Coverage of the Black Yankees, 1937-1955". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2008. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1929.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Already regarded as one of the top teams in Negro League baseball, the Kansas City Monarchs became known as a powerhouse unit in the 1930s and 40s. They rolled into towns with lights, amazing athletes, and competitive play. They won championship after championship during these years as Kansas City baseball fans strongly supported them. As they became an integral part of the city, the Monarchs' success, open-seating policy, and jazzy home openers fostered a large following of mixed-race fans. The local black newspaper, the Kansas City Call, held them up on a pedestal, while sportswriters for the mainstream Kansas City Star/Times downplayed the Monarchs' accomplishments and influence in the community. This thesis focuses on the relationship the Call had with the best team in black baseball through the context of its treatment of games, players, league officials, and team owners, as well as other patterns and tactics. Analysis of the Star/Times coverage is also considered to show variances in coverage between one city's race-divided newspapers. Negro League baseball and the African American newspapers that covered the teams grew out of and illustrated the segregation laws and prejudices feelings that existed in the United States during most of the twentieth century. Over time, especially when the sports world moved into the post-integration period, the Call's bolstering of the Monarchs deteriorated as the paper's promotion of democracy steered its sportswriters away from a baseball organization that symbolized segregation. The different types of coverage by the Call throughout the twenty-year study can be described as all-out promotion, balance, and abandonment. In the 1950s nostalgia and conflict existed, as the Call's sportswriters became torn on how to cover a team that was once the pride of the black community, but now represented inequality. In an attempt to remedy this torment, the Call tried to convince black baseball officials to remove the “Negro League” stigma by signing players of all races in order to mirror the more democratic Major Leagues. The white press, meanwhile, ignored the bigger issues of black baseball as one Negro League team after another died in the 1950s. The Star/Times peripheral coverage of the Monarchs provides context to the social issues and discriminatory practices at play in Missouri. As this thesis outlines the coverage of the Monarchs through the Black and White newspapers of Kansas City, previous research is substantiated and challenged to provide a fuller account of Jim Crow's effects.

In this thesis, we present a new adaptive notch filter (ANF) toestimate frequencies of multiple narrow-band signals or sine waves in an additive broad-band noise. The new ANF model is derivedby combining the adaptive line enhancement (ALE) structurewith the Steiglitz-McBride Method (SMM) with constrained poles and zeros. When the decorrelation delay parameter ''delta''=1, the new ANFis shown to be equivalent to iterative filtering algorithm (IFA) model for''rho''=1, and is equivalent to recursive generalized least square (RGLS) model for ''rho'' < 1.If the observed measurement data is corrupted by color noise, the new ANF still can provide accurate frequency estimation if we choose appropriate value of ''delta''.When the new ANF is executed off-line, the algorithmwill converge if the noise is white. When the new ANF isexecuted on-line, we provide a sufficient conditionfor the new ANF. When the condition is met, the on-linealgorithm will converge. The tracking property of the new ANF is analyzed for white noisecase and is shown to have the same tracking performance as that of RML (Recursive Maximum Likelihood).Extensive simulations show that the convergence properties of the proposed ANF are comparable to those of RML, and the new ANF has better frequency resolution. The proposed ANF does not needthe stability monitoring if the initial guess is stable. The new ANF is computationally simple and hasfast convergent speed, and the bias of convergent point is small. It also has good frequency resolution and high frequency tracking capability. Therefore, the new ANF is suitablefor practical applications.

Koutesh, Marek. "Historická poetika tvorby Jima McBridea v kontextu filmových deníků". Master's thesis, 2021. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-448753.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this thesis was to clarify the reasons of the formal diversity that can be observed in selected films by director Jim McBride. The hypothesis is based on the fact that these movies are characterized by different tendencies of independent American cinema in the 50s and 60s. The aim of the work was to prove that similar diversity of stylistic devices was accepted and even supported in the ecosystem of American underground. The starting point for historical research and analysis was a poetics of cinema approach outlined by David Bordwell in Poetics of Cinema. From this perspective, the thesis examines the immanent and distant factors that may have influenced McBride's works. After an introduction of these theoretical starting points, working hypotheses connected with individual films and with the creative ecosystem were defined. Formal heterogeneity was demonstrated on Shirley Clarke's work and in Marie Menken's film Notebook. The chapters are followed by an analysis of three McBride's movies. A closer analysis of selected categories of film form confirmed the hypothesis that the films are really distinct and that their director interacted with various traditions and norms.

Abstract (sommario):
Bone conduction (BC) hearing is the process of transmitting sound energy through vibrations of the skull, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain, which results in an auditory sensation (Stenfelt and Goode 2005). BC communication is attractive for military operations because the transducers are lightweight, inconspicuous, and easily integrated into military headgear. Bone conduction (BC) headsets can present audio when ambient sounds must be either blocked by hearing protection or preserved to maintain situational awareness, and they can provide necessary radio communication in quiet and high noise environments, especially when combined with an appropriate hearing protection system (McBride et al. 2005, Henry and Letowski, 2007). The overall objective of this research is to develop, validate, and deliver anatomy and physics based modeling tools and experimental procedures for analysis and design of cranial bone conduction (BC) communication systems. The modeling tools will be used to optimize the design, attachment, and anatomical location of BC speakers and microphones for best communication clarity in various military environments.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper discusses the use of a broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) system to investigate local gas temperatures during a vortex/flame interaction. The CARS system is first used to obtain flame temperature measurements in a series of near adiabatic hydrogen/air flames produced with a Hencken burner (Hencken, 1994; Hancock, et al., 1996). These temperatures are compared to adiabatic flame temperatures found using the NASA-Lewis equilibrium code (Gordon and McBride, 1976) and a computational fluid dynamics code developed by Katta, et al. (1994). These results help to validate the CARS system. Next, the CARS system is used to obtain local gas temperature measurements in an undriven hydrogen/nitrogen jet diffusion flame and during a vortex-flame interaction in the same flame, but under driven conditions. Experimental results (Hsu, et al., 1993; Carter, et al., 1995) and direct numerical simulations (Katta and Roquemore, 1995) indicate that preferential diffusion (manifest as Lewis number), acting together with flame curvature, influence the local flame temperature along the flame surface. Under certain conditions the local temperature will rise even though the flame is positively stretched-a condition which is typically thought to cause a reduction in local flame temperature. In this paper such a condition is investigated for a hydrogen/nitrogen diffusion flame using CARS and direct numerical simulations.

Abstract (sommario):
This dataset is derived from an anonymous, cross-sectional, IRB-approved, online survey study of 534 college students. Collected in 2018-2019, the data include self-reported measures of dispositional (trait) mindfulness, perceived stress, cognitive functioning, and GPA, along with demographic variables. Results from these data were originally published by McBride & Greeson (2021) in the journal Current Psychology.
