Abstract (sommario):
During the past couple of years, shootings in Malmö have been given considerable amount of attention and not the least by the news media. The tabloids have often been dominated by headlines which indicate an increase of violent shootings in Sweden’s third largest city. Comparing shootings in Malmö to other cities in Sweden is a difficult task as the local police collects data based on different criteria, nevertheless comparisons are frequently made. The objective of this project is to examine how newspapers portray shootings in Malmö by analyzing articles from major newspapers in Sweden. This thesis focuses on the language that is used and in the light of moral panics theory it is discusses whether the news articles in question are instigating moral panics. It is evaluated what discourses are produced and reproduced by the language used in the context of shootings in Malmö through critical discourse analysis (CDA). The main findings reveal that news media tend to promote certain ideas about the severity and the circumstances regarding shootings in Malmö that are symbolic for the instigation of moral panics. In the context of shootings in Malmö the most frequent points that are raised is that shootings are “symptomatic”, shootings are becoming normalized and shootings pose a threat to “normal people” as well. The main implications from this project is that future research is needed on the subject of how data regarding shootings is collected by to police in order to conduct research similar to this. There is a need of a uniformity within the police regarding the definition and classification of shootings in order to facilitate research that compares shootings across the nation. As a follow up to the current project it would be beneficial to investigate the social reactions to the style of journalism discussed in this paper.

Abstract (sommario):
In this dissertation, we investigate the influence of the training context of the Professional Master’s degree in Physics Teaching (PMPT) at UFRGS on the development of educational products. The reaserch consists of two stages of analysis: a quantitative, focusing on total universe of completed works, and a discursive analysis of Classical Physics didactical texts (called support texts)in strong interaction with the dialogism proposed by Bakhtin/Voloshinov/Medvedev’s Circle and the professionals rationalities of Contreras. From the quantitative analysis, we realized that the way the authors of educational products, along with their advisors, treat the theoretical frameworks points toward an unbelief on the need of a solid theoretical foundation. Several inconsistencies occur as the joint adoption of almost antagonistic authors such as Vygotsky and Piaget, Vygotsky and Ausubel or without a minimum reasoning about the theoretical principles defended by these authors. This naive approach leads to an utilitarist conception of the theoretical framework, strictly related to what we call metaphor of market. Moreover, we see the adoption of scholars in a way that it is advisor’s friendly, strengthening social and hierarchical significance of extraverbal context in which the utterances were produced. The choice of these theoretical contributions possibly acts as a discursive strategy to develop the relationship between the student-professor, advisors and evaluators. The discursive analysis showed that the authors use the theoretical frameworks as if they are simple requirements to be fulfilled by their dissertations. In a few times we identified links between theoretical contribution, focus-issues, development, implementation and evaluation of educational product. We note that the technical rationality disseminated by UFRGS PMPT directly influences the development of educational products, reflecting the directionality, responsiveness, expressiveness and speech genre present on these works. Educational products developed in this kind of training context tend to be of little relevance concerning the school needs.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a critical reading of the works of Ernesto Laclau based on three of his fundamental concepts and his understanding of psychoanalysis. As Laclau develops his theoretical position, psychoanalysis becomes a central reference. Laclau studies the phenomenon of populism, and at the same time proposes a strategy for contemporary emancipatory movements. Studying Laclau's works is opportune because of the rise of populist political movements, some of which reclaim Laclau’s theories. In this thesis we reconstruct Laclau's reading and use of psychoanalysis, to counterpoint it with the original psychanalytical works (Freud, Lacan and even Miller,) and in this way contrasting Laclau’s theory with psychoanalysis, with their similarities and differences, analogies and contradictions, agreements and disagreements. The text is structured chronologically, and also it criticizes Laclau’s works according to their internal logic by explaining the links with psychoanalysis, and the text ends with a chapter in which the theoretical developments of Laclau are analyzed at the light of two of his closest interlocutors, Jorge Alemán and Slavoj Žižek.Laclau proves the structural unavoidability of populism: he demonstrates how populism is always present in democratic governments. However, the relationship between Laclau's theory and emancipation, jouissance and economics remains problematic. Thus, Laclau’s criticism of neoliberalism remains limited

Abstract (sommario):
This study undertakes an examination of fool-master discourse in Shakespeare with the help of discourse stylistics, an approach to the study of literary texts which combines findings from the fields of discourse analysis, conversation analysis and pragmatics. The analysis aims to show how the relations of power which exist between dramatic characters are manifested by the linguistic organization of the dialogue as interactive process. Fool-master discourse in Shakespeare is analysed from three different perspectives: the use of the pronouns of address (you/thou); the organization of the discourse as a whole; and the politeness strategies used by fools and their employers in face-to-face interaction. With regard to the pronouns of address, it is shown that neither a structural model nor a sociolinguistic one are sufficient per se to satisfactorily explain the constant shift of pronoun which occurs in Early Modern English dramatic texts. It is suggested that a model of analysis rooted in discourse analysis and pragmatics ought to be developed. Burton's framework is used to study the conversational structure of fool-master discourse, and to show how the power relations obtaining between dramatic characters are manifested by the internal organization of dramatic dialogue. Politeness phenomena in fool-master discourse are studied following Brown and Levinson's model and it is shown that both the fools and their employers orient to face in interaction. Finally, this study of power relations in fool-master discourse shows that, contrary to much current critical opinion, the fools in Shakespeare are not licensed jesters who enjoy unlimited freedom of speech. Feste, Lavatch and Lear's Fool need to resort to complex linguistic strategies if they want to make their criticisms and, at the same time, avoid being punished.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent scholarly work in mathematics education has included a focus on learning mathematics with understanding (Hiebert & Carpenter, 1992; Hiebert et al., 1997; Fennema & Romberg, 1999; National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000). Hiebert et al. (1997) discussed two processes that they suggested increase understanding and that are central to this study: reflection and communication. Learning mathematics with understanding requires that the students create a deeper knowledge of mathematics through reflection and communication. The environment in which such learning can take place must include patterns of behavior, known as social norms that promote deeper thinking. When the social norms encourage reflection and communication among the members of the classroom community, or supports learning with understanding, it becomes what I term a productive discourse community. The purpose of this study is to find out what a teacher does to create and maintain a productive discourse community where students can reason and learn with understanding. To accomplish this purpose, this research asks the following question: In what ways does the teacher in the study direct mathematical discourse in order to facilitate understanding? To answer this research question, data was gathered from eight class periods. The classroom discourse was analyzed and six discourse generating tools were found to be used by the teacher: (1) using lower-order questions to engage students, (2) persisting in eliciting students' reasoning, (3) encouraging as many student participations as possible, (4) encouraging students to analyze and evaluate each other's comments, (5) encouraging students to share as many strategies as possible and (6) using a focusing discourse pattern. There were also three social norms found to be established in the classroom at the time of the data collection. These norms are: all students are expected to (a) participate (b) share their reasoning when called upon, and (c) listen to, analyze, and evaluate each other's comments. Through further analysis, it was found that the six discourse generating tools reinforced the social norms, while the social norms supported the six discourse generating tools. Thus creating an environment where reflection and communication occurred in a way that promoted learning mathematics with understanding.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examines the "Focus on Schools" [FOSJ model for state education reform and the "Education: Have Your Say" [ EHYS J discussion paper from whence it came. Both documents provide the same guiding framework of "organisational principles" for a restructured Queensland Education Department. These principles and the "Model for the Future" they suggest, will be investigated in Part 4 of the study. Utilising the methods of critical policy analysis, this investigation develops the argument that the EHYS/FOS model is corporate managerial and as such it reproduces a market-oriented value structure. The more interesting aspect of the EHYS product and process is not so much its corporate nature but rather the means by which that corporate agenda was "sold" to the education community as progressive reformism. The EHYS text is of interest is so far as it employed the social democratic ideals of community participation to render corporatisation "rational" and even desirable. Hence if the state Labor government's reform program is a market-oriented design, EHYS is its marketing strategy. At least that is the conclusion presented by the discourse analysis of part 5. Part 5 emerges from an understanding that the l anguage of the EHYS response sheet i s the starting point for an official constructi on of reality and meaning making. The language of the text is the means by which a rati onal isation program is depol iti cised and normalised. It is the means by which "consultation" becomes a closed process. While the later stages of the study will expl ore and explain these complicated relations between language and politics, at this point it is suffi cient to note that the EHYS exercise was not about changing the corporate agenda as much as it was about manipulating the public percepti on of it. Of course, and a place in this corporate consensus has a time political and policy history. Thus Part 3 will trace the discursive history of concepts central to EHYS/FOS: concepts of "devolution" and "participation." Moreover, the politics of EHYS/FOS will be examined in the context of the rise of neoliberalism and the eclipse of a social democrati c alternative. The relevance of this effort will be advanced in part 1 and the method by which I hope to achieve it, will be explained further in part 2.

Abstract (sommario):
The author calls into question the primacy of the optimism/pessimism split within modern discourses on technology and suggests rather that the dominant thematic division in these discourses is that between mastery over and enslavement to technology. Each of these is criticized with respect to the faulty conception of control it implies. The author concludes with a view of technology as a social practice in order to move beyond mastery or enslavement.

Abstract (sommario):
The term “feminist” is a widely used label that is often embraced by women who do not advocate feminism. The wide use of the feminist label in contrast to the declining presence of feminist activism indicates a problem with the development of a third wave of feminism in the United States. In this study, I evaluated trends in feminism in the United States through an analysis of public political discourse. A semantic discourse analysis of political discourse from 1870 to 2011 evaluated a shift in the use of inclusive and exclusive pronoun usage by female political speakers. Speeches compiled for this study were obtained from internet sources such as NPR, C-Span and CNN, and evaluated the oratory of Victoria Woodhull, Geraldine Ferraro, Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann. The results of this study indicated that there was not a strong shift in the use of inclusive and exclusive pronouns overtime, but there was a large growth in both population and diversity of the targeted audience, and this growth was often not accommodated for in the discourse of contemporary female political candidates. The slow shift in inclusive discourse indicated a post-feminist line of thought that questioned the validity of an argument for a third wave of feminist activism in the United States. Political discourse cannot define a cause for post-feminism, but can indicate a downward trend in the influence of feminism as a contemporary cultural movement.

Abstract (sommario):
International Masters students face daunting challenges in adjusting to a startlingly different UK academic discourse within a short time. Little research has been conducted into these challenges and successful transition strategies. A review of learning development literature identified a set of three models, which has not been related theoretically to international Masters students. The latest, critical model, Academic Literacies, especially offers important insights into these students’ difficulties and potential for integration. This research design explored these learning journeys in depth through interviews in a longitudinal study of MBA and MSc students during the 2009-10 academic year. The rich data were investigated through the qualitative methodology of narrative analysis, with twin aims of recognising similarities but also important differences across the students’ learning experiences. A majority experienced strongly emotional learning journeys. These followed an affective pattern with a downturn early in the academic year influenced by the degree of unfamiliarity in the new culture and academic discourse, mirrored by a corresponding improvement in emotional state during Semester 2 or 3 as these external issues became more familiar and comfortable. Self-efficacy emerged as an especially important factor in achieving academic success, and students’ progression was mapped against this variable using an established, U-shaped transition curve model. The study identifies practical learning development interventions, but also highlights the importance of educational practitioners becoming pedagogically self-reflective to empathise more genuinely with international students’ struggles, and to learn from their diverse experiences in ways that can enrich the process of internationalising western education.

Abstract (sommario):
This is an explication of Lacan’s Seminar XVII. The introduction situates the Seminar in its time and in relation to other theories of discourse. In part one I examine the changes which it brings to a variety of ideas already known in Lacan’s oeuvre such as Jouissance, Master Signifier(s) and Oedipus. Part two looks the four discourses in detail after considering the positions common to each. I provide accounts of each discourse as taking place internally to a subject and between subjects. The coda examines areas where further research is possible, reviews and critiques some scholarship on this seminar and inquires into the use value of the discourse theory, both generally and as a means of getting beyond Lacan.

Abstract (sommario):
This study investigated how a group of teachers in Queensland, Australia made sense of the first government-developed preschool curriculum guidelines. The implementation of curriculum reforms in pre-compulsory settings has tended to be ignored by researchers. This study provided a unique opportunity to build insights into how preschool curriculum is constructed within contested and complex social and political contexts. An interpretive approach to research was adopted that was informed by hermeneutic traditions. Data were accumulated using two group conversations involving seven preschool teachers and three conversations with individual teachers. Transcripts gathered during the evaluation of the trial document were analysed as well as texts associated with the production of the guidelines. Aspects of critical and poststructuralist theory were combined to help construct critical understandings of teachers' experiences with the new guidelines. The investigation showed that preschool teachers made sense of the curriculum text in relation to their existing child-centred curriculum perspectives. The study highlighted how teachers' interpretations were shaped by competing agendas, ideologies and discourses operating within teachers' work contexts and the contexts that shaped the production of the text. The findings indicate that the introduction of the document reshaped teachers' views about curriculum, children and their roles as they renegotiated curriculum perspectives in relation to new official definitions of curriculum. Rather than evaluating the curriculum text, the study showed how teachers constructed multiple and contradictory interpretations of the text as they managed tensions within the texts and within complex work contexts. Teachers' perceived that the text provided government endorsement for their existing philosophies and practices and created new expectations for changes in practice. The document provided a resource that teachers could use strategically to justify their practice to parents and colleagues who did not always value child-centred practice. The text also operated to construct new positions and ways of understanding curriculum that competed with teachers' existing views. The study highlights that policy makers and teachers need to reflect critically on the multiple factors that shape the negotiation of curriculum meanings in diverse contexts. The study shows that preschool curriculum is negotiated within complex and unstable discourses and power relations. Recognition of this complexity can help curriculum developers to design materials that empower teachers as they manage competing interests and demands. Awareness of the multiple factors that shape curriculum and curriculum materials can help teachers to monitor reflexively the positive and negative outcomes of curriculum reform and make appropriate decisions about how to use reforms to meet children's needs. This can help teachers to maintain a sense of control within changing contexts and to ensure changes in practice can be ethically justified.

Abstract (sommario):
The historiography of modern architecture and planning in Turkey is usually based upon the accomplishments since the establishment of the Republic of Turkey and the reforms introduced after 1923. It would be fair to say that the concept of city planning only came to the foreground and attracted public attention after the foundation of the Republic, in particular with the planning of Ankara, the new capital of the country after Istanbul. Regardless of how significant the planning of Ankara may have been in the history of modern planning in Turkey, this thesis argues that in order to understand the emergence of modern urban planning and its relation to architecture, one should be aware of the series of events that provided the necessary grounds for planning to be able to manifest itself as a distinct field of knowledge.

ABSTRACT: My thesis explores how discourse and material practices have created agoraphobia, the fear of public places. This psychological disorder predominates among women. Throughout much of Western history, women have been encouraged to stay home for their safety and for the safety of society. I argue that agoraphobic women have internalized this discourse, expressing fears of being in public or being alone without a companion to support and protect them; losing control over their minds or their bodies; and endangering or humiliating themselves. Therapeutic discourse also has created agoraphobia by naming it, categorizing the emotions and behaviors associated with it, and describing the characteristics of agoraphobics.
The material practice of therapy reinforces this discourse. Meanwhile, practices such as rape and harassment reinforce the dominant discourse on women&softsign;s safety. I survey psychological literature, beginning with the naming of agoraphobia in 1871, to explain why the disorder is now diagnosed primarily in women. I examine nineteenth-century discourse that told women they belonged at home while men controlled the public domain. In 1871, the Paris Commune revolt epitomized the fear of women publicly out of control. I return to Paris a century later for a reading of the novel Certificate of Absence, in which Sylvia Molloy explores identity through the eyes of a woman who might be labeled agoraphobic.
I ask whether homebound women are resisting or retreating from a hostile world. Instead of seeing agoraphobia only as a personal problem, people should question why so many women fear themselves and the world outside their home.My methodology includes an analysis of nineteenth-century texts as well as current media, prose, and poetry. I also support my arguments with material from professional journals and nonfiction books in different disciplines. Common to feminist research, an interdisciplinary approach was needed to situate a psychological disorder within a social context.

Abstract (sommario):
Since the publication of A Nation at Risk (National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983), Berliner and Biddle (1995) have argued media have assisted leaders in creating a “manufactured crisis” (p. 4) about America’s public schools to scapegoat educators, push reforms, and minimize societal problems, such as systemic racism and declining economic growth, particularly in urban areas. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act (2001) functions as an important articulation of this crisis (Granger, 2008). Utilizing the theoretical lenses of master narrative theory (Lyotard, 1984), Critical Race Theory (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001), and social capital theory (Bourdieu, 1986; Coleman 1988), this study employed critical discourse analysis (Reisigl & Wodak, 2009) to unmask the mainstream media’s master narrative, or dominant story, about Victory High School (VHS), which was reconstituted under the authority of the NCLB Act (2001). Findings revealed a master narrative that racialized economic competition, vilified community members, and exonerated neoliberal reforms. Drawing on the critical race methodology of counter-narratives (Yosso, 2006), individual and focus group interviews with 12 VHS teachers, alumni, and community elders illustrated how reforms fragmented this school community, destroying collective social capital, while protecting the interests of capitalism and neoliberalism. By revealing the interests protected by the media’s master narrative and beginning a counter-narrative voiced by members of the community, this study contributes to recasting the history of the VHS community, to understanding the intersections between race and class in working class communities of color, and to exposing the impact of neoliberal educational reforms on urban schools.

This dissertation aims to focus on the impossibilities of education from each of the discursive forms it can assume in societies. It begins with a discussion of the proximity between psychoanalysis and education as two distinct epistemological fields until it reaches the point where Freud comprehends them as impossible discursive positions. The main used tool is the theory of discourse by Jacques Lacan, a reinterpretation of the three impossible Freudians. With it, is undertaken the investment of thinking the discursive contingencies predominantly present in the time period comprehended between the end of the Middle Ages and nowadays. The enjoyment [jouissance] modalizations for each discourse are presented and their corresponding way of education. Of the five discourses thought by Lacan master, hysterical, university, capitalist and analytical it is given a stronger focus to those considered politically hegemonic nowadays: the university and the capitalist. A discursive change between the first and the second is utilized to approach the transformations that occurred in the time period in which production capitalism gives way to consumer capitalism, or late capitalism. Its final goal is to discuss and raise questions on how the uneasiness nowadays is configured and how the hegemonic discourse engender the subjectivities of the subjects in education and society. For this, it will work with the contingent and historic, and not only structural of the Lacanian subject, covering and articulating the theoretical contributions of several authors who dedicated themselves to thinking about the themes that compose this subject

Abstract (sommario):
The paper shows that the use of linguistic mechanisms of political discourse plays a large role in the construction of electoral campaigns in all cases examined. The mechanisms of manipulation of different countries depend on the characteristics of the country's political communication. The study and the correct use of mechanisms allows a politician to wage an effective struggle for power, which is the main goal of any political activity.

Abstract (sommario):
Segregation is frequently described as a consequence of the global restructuring of social, economic, and political expansions in which multicultural cities, like Malmö, become part of them. This study aims to highlight how visions of housing segregation and exclusion in the city of Malmö has been represented in the local policy documents (Master Plans) through the last three decades and to understand how a newly emerged glocal actor, known as BID Malmö, have impacted the urban governance in the city. In order to investigate these developments, this study applies two analytical frameworks. In terms of policy analysis, it employs a what’s the problem represented to be? (WPR) approach and for the conceptualization of BID Malmö applies the theory of the Global City. Policy analysis shows that urban segregation has been persistent in the city of Malmö through the last three decades, however the representation of problem has shifted vibrantly from placing citizens as the main cause of housing segregation during 1990s to an arena that includes contingent processes and practices that need to be tackled. Policy analysis also shows that Malmö municipality, through shifting the burden of responsibility, now promotes partnership between public and private actors to reduce exclusion based on specific district needs. Moreover, this study argues that the city of Malmö, because of the cross-border network of global cities, is now a space where one can identify formation of new types of global politics of place where informal political actors are emerging and can actually impact the urban governance. Finally, this study maintains that the city of Malmö, along with its newly emerged glocalized actor, fit into the theory of the Global City, by Saskia Sassen. Therefore, this study has also a deductive qualitative analysis.

The article considers that emphatic constructions are an important and integral component of political speech, as they can not only give speech expressiveness and emotionality, but also update the information, which, according to the speaker, is the most significant. That is, language is an important tool in the realization of the global goal of political discourse – the achievement of power.

Abstract (sommario):
The New Law of Directives and Bases of Brazilian Education (LDB 9.394/96) forecasts that higher education promotes critical, reflectivity, correlation of knowledge, but also the incentive to "research work and scientific research aiming the development of science and technology and the creation and dissemination of culture and, thus, to develop the understanding of man and the environment in which they live."(Article 43, paragraph III). However, little is heard about these issues from the voice of the adviser of academic research, what this adviser believes a social order problem is, in view of the importance of these social actors to academia. The few studies that address the theme are limited to identify the adviser from empirical impressions of the mentees and reflect the actions from political and educational issues (ARROW, 2003; Mazzilli, 2003; Bianchetti & MACHADO, 2006). In this sense, this paper attempts to answer through the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), what the advisers have to say about their social practice. Interpretive in nature (Alves-Mazzotti, 1999), this research counts with data generated by advisers of master in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics, representatives of federal, state and private spheres of Rio de Janeiro, featuring two participants from each sphere. In the first stage, the subjects responded to a semi-structured interview. The second step consists of: a) a questionnaire, b) electronic mail; c) the regiments of the postgraduation programs, and d) historical review of advising in Brazil. The social character of this study is the dialectical relationship between language and society, as the CDA considers any discursive event as a text (first dimension), a discursive practice (second dimension) and a social practice (third dimension): the three-dimensional model (Fairclough, 2001). The transit system of LSF guided the analysis of the first dimension, confirming other studies on the ranking of the process recurrence (LIMA LOPES, 2001). The interpretation of this first dimension indicates that advisers act on idiosyncrasy, and that the main social actors of this act are adviser and mentees, in asymmetrical relationship power. In the second dimension, the interdiscursivity reinforces this idiosyncrasy, but includes the institutional pressures, which act as regulators of this act. In the third dimension, the results suggest that historical aspects justify the decline in the quality of the masters, associated to a political interest, and the characteristics of post-modernity to a new and hybrid performance. Moreover, the results point to a discourse of resistance against hegemony in the three dimensions of analysis. The survey also allowed discussions on practical aspects: a) the reflection of the subjects about their roles and responsibilities and b) update the theoretical, applied to a topic less explored. This work is an invitation to further research on the adviser discourse, bringing out not only his/her voice, as a literal speech of one of the interviewers, but also direct and significant contributions to studies in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in Brazil

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis problematises in historical context the identity of the ‘Old Masters’ in the literature on art and practices of museums in France from the time of the French Revolution until the mid-nineteenth century. Since the end of the Old Regime, the definition of the ‘Old Masters’ was transformed: a transition of principal elements, from the classical Greek artists to the founders of the National School, took place. This transition reflected the anxiety of the newborn French Republic facing an international rivalry in art history and myriad obstacles to its social and political goals. To meet the concerns of competition and emulation, the names as well as the artistic and moral qualities of ‘Masters’ were recognised, with emphasis, as being closely linked to public instruction and national history. The thesis analyses the texts and museum theories of Alexandre Lenoir and Toussaint-Bernard Émeric-David and the discussion of ‘Old Masters’ in the republican journal La Décade. Also analysed in this context are the displays of the Old Masters in the museums, catalogues (with a focus of Landon’s Annales) and works of art during the Revolution and the first half of the nineteenth century recreating the images of the Old Masters as national heroes or fathers of French art. This consciously performed reconstruction of the ‘Old Masters’ during the French Revolution made a crucial contribution to the formation of the cultural identity of France

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates how the eight state-funded New Zealand universities present themselves in the prospectuses they publish yearly. The background for this research is the fact that the universities now have to compete for students and funding monies because the government has linked the amount of funding to the number of students and the universities’ success in research (McKenzie, 1996). Additionally, student fees and private sources increasingly contribute to the universities’ budget. The entry of competition into the tertiary education sector is a result of recent policy changes that led the education sector from an egalitarian scholarly system with a tradition of open and free access for all citizens to a market-oriented education industry, which contributes considerably to the national economy. This restructuring of the tertiary education sector is part of the major social, political and economic changes that New Zealand went through – and is still going through – beginning with the Fourth Labour Government's second term of office from 1987 to 1990 (Holland & Boston, 1990). The historical background of this thesis focuses on these policy changes that influenced all areas of the public life in New Zealand in the last 25 years. The literature review established that these reforms resulted in processes of commodification of education, competitive marketisation and corporatisation of the universities (Butterworth & Tarling, 1994). The purpose of this thesis is to find evidence of these three tendencies within the language and visual presentation of the university prospectuses. The prospectuses have been chosen as the data corpus because they provide a comprehensive overview of the institutions. Moreover, they represent a hybrid genre of an advertorial text type, being partly informational, partly promotional. The data has been analysed by applying textually-oriented discourse analysis (Fairclough, 1992). Discourse analysis has been proven to be a suitable methodology as it links linguistic analysis to the broader social context. The premise of this approach was that social changes leave traces within the discourse. The data analysis confirmed the intended outcome that the tendencies of commodification, marketisation and corporatisation are visible in the present material. This concludes that the order of discourse of business has colonised the order of discourse of tertiary education.

Abstract (sommario):
This research focuses on identity transformation effects of technicians acting as engineers and candidates to Cnam’s degree outside study preparation agenda. During this training program, the subject is expected to draft a text into an academic format linked to a professional project. The analysis of the links which can be established between this text and the professional transition operated by the subject contributes to grasp some mechanisms of the professional developement. The aim of the study is to understand the relationships between the speech held by the writers during the writing process and the revealing moments of their professional identity transition. The hypothesis is related to these revealing moments which proceed of a mutual fertilization between verbalizations on the writing process and on the text itself. The main theoretical framework is the professional development of these subjects and how they feel their professional identity (Wittorski, 2008) and the enunciative identity (Guibert, 2007) : a multidimensional system of representations : those of writer identity (self-images as writing), those of the written document to be produced (images of the prescribed text) and those of recipients of the text (images of others for oneself on oneself). The observations are realized by means of comprehensive interviews in a phenomenological dimension (Haas & Masson, 2006 ; Matthey, 2005) about writing process. The chosen methodology leans on a qualitative approach crossing a thematic analysis of contents (Bardin, 2007) and an analysis of the enunciation (Charaudeau, 2010 ; Kerbrat-Orecchioni, 2006). The first approach is completed by a quantitative method with the Iramuteq software. The resulting data allows to identify moments of tension concerning terms of resolution and specific objects

Abstract (sommario):
There has been growing interest in the field of business management in developing methods to improve management competency. One popular management development method has been executive coaching, but because of the unique needs of business executives, executive coaches are constantly looking for new and more effective methods to work with business executives’ life, career, physical, and psychological problems. There has not been an agreed upon solution discovered to solve this problem. On the one hand, it was proposed that there is a need for executive coaches to employ psychotherapeutic methods in coaching to meet the psychological demands of business executives. But on the other hand, there are numerous issues related to standardizing executive coaching methods, qualifying executive coaches, and resolving ethical dilemmas. The author of this thesis views this issue as an over expectation of society of individuals in positions of power and responsibility. This thesis uses social theories to explore the expectations behind the high demands on the performance of business executives, and to illuminate the degree to which executive coaching engages psychotherapy. The findings of this study show that certain themes such as business skills, leadership, self-development, success, interpersonal skills, and achieve work-life balance dominates the advertisements of executive coaching professionals. These advertisements also use rhetorical devices to make these skills seem attractive and important to possess, which inevitably impacts on the view of self of executives and stimulates their desire to self- improve. It was also found that 21.26% of the advertised executive coaching services could be promoted by psychotherapists instead.

Abstract (sommario):
The topic of this paper is analysis of euphemization and dysphemization in political discourse. Euphemia and dysphemia are quite a specific language phenomenon. The uniqueness of these phenomena lies in their ability to reflect social, cultural and moral values, peculiarities of worldview not only of individuals, but also of modern society as a whole. Euphemisms and dysphemisms depend entirely on the assessments in society of a certain phenomenon, on the definition of what is acceptable and what is not. Hence the need to systematical study of these phenomena in relation to cultural and social changes. The relevance of the work is due to the increasing interest of philologists in the functional side of the language. Modern researchers pay attention to those linguistic phenomena that reflect the changes in the consciousness of the current society. In the context of teaching methodology and intercultural communication, these phenomena are also very significant, they make it possible to understand the realities of another country.

Abstract (sommario):
Interpersonal violence and abuse in New Zealand is so widespread it is considered a normative experience. Mental health nurses witnessing the inscribed effects of abuse on service users are lead to consider whether we are dealing with a breakdown of the mind or a breakdown in social or cultural connection (Stuhlmiller, 2003). The purpose of this research is to examine the cultural context which makes violence and abuse against women and children possible. In 2003, the public debate on prostitution law reform promised to open a space in which discourses on sexuality and violence, practices usually private or hidden, would publicly emerge. Everyday discourses relating to prostitution law reform reported in the New Zealand Herald newspaper in the year 2003 were analysed using Foucauldian and feminist post-structural methodological approaches. Foucauldian discourse analysis emphasises the ways in which power is enmeshed in discourse, enabling power relations and hegemonic practices to be made visible. The research aims were to develop a complex, comprehensive analysis of the media discourses, to examine the construction of harm in the media debate, to examine the ways in which the cultural hegemony of dominant groups was secured and contested and to consider the role of mental health nurses as agents of emancipatory political change. Mental health promotion is mainly a socio-political practice and the findings suggest that mental health nurses could reconsider their professional role, to participate politically as social activists, challenging the social order thereby reducing the human suffering which interpersonal violence and abuse carries in its wake.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This research arose out of the author's concern that the Salvation Army and its social services in Australia were being influenced by government and society at the expense of its own Christian beliefs and internal rhetoric. The Army's rhetoric is explored through an analysis of Salvation Army's texts. The study findings verify the proposition of Kress (1985) and others, that institutions transform and are transformed through their use of discourse. It is confirmed that William and Catherine Booth (the Army's founders) were not independent from the state and from external influence as required by Booth. It was found that just as William and Catherine Booth reworked the discourses of their time, they were influenced in turn by these discourses and the organization they created , namely, The Salvation Army was transformed through the use of discourse. The research found that modern texts produced in the Army in Australia, are influenced by the dominant discourses of the modern Australian welfare state, and that as a consequence the Army, in transforming these discourses for their own purposes, is also being transformed and in the process becoming increasingly colonised by governments in Australia.

Abstract (sommario):
The Master's thesis is based on the linguistic approach. The purpose of this research is to classify anglicisms in the German-language media discourse and determine their specificity. The study analyzes the printed editions of the German-language magazine “DER SPIEGEL” for the year 2018. This magazine is common not only in Germany but also in other countries, mainly European. It can shape public opinion on selected issues, and is also one of the leading media sources in Germany. This Master's thesis analyzes the concepts of anglicism and media discourse, the specifics of anglicisms is the reasons for their borrowing, the historical aspects of borrowings that entered the German language, the difficulties in their entry into the language, the attitude of German-speaking society to anglicisms, the typologies of foreign-language borrowings and ways of their assimilation in the German language, the concept of the phenomenon of Denglisch, and the main classification of borrowings. The research focuses on the analysis of anglicisms and foreign language borrowings from the third language in the magazines "DER SPIEGEL" for the year 2018 such as their calculation, spread throughout main areas, their classification, as well as consideration of their functions.

Abstract (sommario):
The Norwegian Tv-series Exit displays the lives of four rich financiers that has it all: money, careers, and families. However, they are bored and escape their family lives by the use of drugs, sex and violence. The Tv-series display badly treated women in various scenes, they are either prostitutes or housewives. Exit has been watched by 1,3 million people in Norway and been called “this year's most disgusting Tv-series” and “chock porn”. The attention and major reactions this Tv-series has been given led to this analysis of the power relations between men and women. This study examines how power is constructed in relation to gender, with a critical discourse analysis with semiotic elements. The theoretical framework includes theories concerning gender, power, master’s suppression techniques and The Male Gaze. The eight scenes that the empirical material was based upon demonstrates power relations and gender inequality: men are portrayed as powerful and women are portrayed as subordinated and/or as objects, rather than individuals. On the other hand, two of the men are portrayed as weak and passive in two of the scenes, this indicates that power is changeable. The male dominance is often exercised by the use of master suppression techniques like derision, objectification and imposition of guilt and shame. The male dominance exercised is legitimized by the gender system and by men’s financial advantage which gives them power over the women in the series. Aspects was also found which show the producers’ critique against the male characters' behavior. A risk, however, is that the critique does not reach the viewers and instead reproduces the critique that they want to communicate.

Abstract (sommario):
The final qualifying work is devoted to the study of cognitive metaphors in diplomatic discourse. This phenomenon is considered on the example of the speech of the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova. The theoretical chapter contains a description of diplomatic discourse as a phenomenon related to other discourses (political, mass media, military, legal), as well as a list of linguistic features of diplomatic texts. The author also presents the main provisions of the theory of conceptual metaphor. A linguocognitive analysis of metaphors in the speech of Russian diplomat Maria Zakharova was conducted in the practical part of the study. Different types of sociomorphic, orientational, anthropomorphic, and artifact metaphors are identified. They receive cognitive and linguo-axiological interpretation. The most frequent metaphorical model revealed (metaphors of the art, metaphors of war, metaphors of the way).

Abstract (sommario):
English K-6 syllabus and support document (1994) is NSW's 'Clayton's' Primary English syllabus in that it was released in 1994, was 'on hold' and under review in early 1995 then recommended for revision by 1998. This is an extraordinary example of 'the written curriculum' of subject English, a site of intense ideological and pedagogical contestation. The Report produced by the Eltis Committee of Review, Focus on learning : Report of the Review of Outcomes and Profiles in New South Wales Schooling (1995) recommended immediate revision of 2 aspects of the syllabus in particular : firstly, the removal from English K-6 Syllabus of outcome statements from the National Profiles and secondly, the removal of the model of grammar endorsed in the document, 'Functional Grammar'. The history of the paradigm shift from State outcomes in syllabus documents, to the inclusion of National Profiles outcomes statements, forms the first part of this study. The recommendation of the Eltis Report to remove 'Functional Grammar' from the syllabus was politically motivated and had pedagogical implications for all those teachers, professional English educators and scholars who have been in divisive debate for nearly a decade about the broadest aspect of the frame of 'Functional Grammar', namely genre, or 'text type' as it is termed in English K-6 Syllabus. This study also looks at the history of the genre theory debate about teaching students to write and the paradigm shift that led to the inclusion of genre theory in the 1994 syllabus. This study, then, examines the essentially political nature of the school subject, English, in a regional educational context of the State of NSW. By presenting a brief curriculum history of the English K-6 Syllabus and Support Document (1994) it will be seen that a curriculum document can be a focus for power struggles between State and Commonwealth Governments and a site of contestation within the educational communities who are stakeholders in subject English

Abstract (sommario):
As entertainment reflects a culture's ideology, it is important for researchers to study its messages and subsequently its potential meanings. Entertainment has the power to inform and persuade, creating models for behavior with which the public interacts. The entertainment texts for the purpose of this study are the Castle television series and the Nikki Heat novels. Together, they create a unique multi-layer fictional world. By using postmodern, feminist, communication, and entertainment theories, the results of this study provide a tightly focused lens which views a narrow aspect of entertainment media. Each text was thoroughly examined using textual analysis, Feminist Poststructuralist Discourse Analysis, and conversation analysis. Contrary to expectations, the results indicated that the Castle and Nikki Heat texts support hegemonic ideology, particularly through the use of exaggerated stereotypes, strict gender roles, imagery, and narrative choices that help perpetuate rape culture. The discussion outlines how these results can be interpreted through the dominant messages presented in the texts. This research is intended to serve as a foundation for future research regarding entertainment media.

Temptation language (TL) is a form of language that combines linguistic competence and psychology. The human desires or needs can be presented through language performance. TL is widely spread throughout our daily life and has close relationship with each individual. This study attempts to explore the structure and nature of TL from the viewpoint of linguistics. By analyzing TL we understand the relationship between human desires (or needs) and language presentation. This study is based on a corpus to analyze TL discourse. Our data sources include newspapers, novels, books, movie (tape, DVD, VCD), etc. The methods used in this study include: (1) related literature collecting and review, (2) corpus analysis, (3) the application of related software in comparing corpus. The results of the thesis show: 1. Temptation, persuasion, and test show an overlap in their performance. The significant difference among them is the motive of a speaker. We can draw a line between them using the motive of the speaker. 2. Language is an important instrument that brings out the desires or needs of a hearer; however, it is not the only method to accomplish this. The real factor that facilitates a temptation success is the personality of the temptee, for example, the judgment, affection, or the standard of moral of an individual. 3. Both temptation and persuasion language present social power in our living community. While persuasion language (PL) acts as a positive social power in our society, temptation on the other hand works as a negative power and much social capital must be paid due to this negative social power. 4. Human desires or needs usually have the intention to be presented by means of language performance. The tempter or persuader also uses language as a main tool to motivate the temptee or persuadee to take action. TL offers rich sources which allow the research of human inner desires and needs expressed through language. Through TL study we are able to better understand the relationship between human psychology and language.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation is an exploration of the role of Euro-North American Philosophy of Education discourse in the genealogy of race struggle. I examine how the reliable narration of Philosophy of Education functions as a project of racial rule premised on moral/temporal/spatial notions of (White) civility and respectability. Tracing the history of race war from the 17th century to present day, I look at how racism has shifted from sovereign power to disciplinary power to biopower as a mode of population management, operating not only through race but through gender and class distinctions as well. I analyze the racialized narrative conventions of liberal modern Enlightenment philosophy and the role these conventions continue to play in the creation and maintenance of a violent racial state. Drawing upon Critical Race Theory, feminist epistemologies, narrative theory, and the work of Michel Foucault, I look at what reliable narration does for philosophers, educators, and students, examining what we/they might have invested in maintaining a distinction between ‘reliability’ and ‘unreliability.’ I ask: How is reliable narration used as a tool by philosophers, educators, and ultimately, the state to distinguish between the civil and uncivil, between those worthy and unworthy of moral consideration, political engagement, and basic human rights? How do the impartiality, univocality, universality, and dispassion of reliable narratives become tied to race and the management of racialized bodies? My aim is to examine the ways in which race as a method of governance acts on a text, its author(s), and its audience. “How are racialized subjectivities constituted through and constitutive of language and knowledge,” I ask, “and to what effect?” I want to trace the social and civil relations mapped out by particular narrative conventions and examine the consequences of failing to adhere to such conventions. I suggest that by questioning the function of reliable narration in philosophical and pedagogical practice, educators, scholars, and students can intervene in the operation of race as a mode of discipline, creating the possibility of a more equitable society in which all have the opportunity to flourish.

BEAUDUIN, Adrien. Old Master, New Neighbour: Putin's Russia in the Czech Foreign Policy Discourse. Master thesis. Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Insitute of International Studies. Supervisor Dr.Jiří Vykoukal, 2013. Abstract The return to democracy in Central-Eastern Europe (CEE) and the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 did not mean that CEE-Russian relations could start anew. This dissertation uses post-structuralist discourse analysis and takes the case of the Czech Republic to examine the development of the Czech official foreign policy discourse towards Russia between 2001 and 2009. Looking at the history of opinions on Russia in the Czech lands and analyzing five events or periods of the 2000s, the present works tracks the evolution of the Russia's identity as constructed by the official Czech discourse. On the official level, the influence of Russia's image on the construction of the Czech identity is also analyzed. The results showed a worsening of relations after 2006 and suggest that the image of the 'Russian threat' has not disappeared from the political discourse in the Czech Republic. Moreover, the Czech official foreign policy discourse constructed the image of the Czech Republic as anchored in its Euroatlantic and European orientation.

Abstract (sommario):
Since its emergence in the 90s, augmented reality has been referred to as the superimposition of virtual objects on the view of the physical world, and holds a promise to fundamentally change the way we interact with the digital universe. However, AR was never able to achieve such objectives, and after the Google Glass Experiment in 2013, what is evident is a conflict between the research visions and consumer expectations. Seeing that reality is done through discursive practices and enactments, this thesis examines how AR is done by those who are involved in its development, its promotion and its use, through textual and discourse analysis, aiming to understand the vision behind its development. We first analyse the emergence and development of AR, following with the analysis of the Google Glass Experiment, as a materialization of the technology. Taking into consideration the potential for behavior and lifestyle change held in AR development, understanding the underlying discourses and visions is of crucial importance as we bring technology to our reality. As a result we have a better assessment of the current technology situation as well as insights for future development and solutions in the field of augmented reality.

Abstract (sommario):
Dark Side of the Moon и The Wall. Dark Side of the Moon и The Wall нами были выявлены как сходства так и различия между ядерными и околоядерными концептами.
This dissertation research is devoted to a comparative analysis of the key concepts of Pink Floyd’s song discourse on the basis of Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall albums. The work was carried out in line with current research in the field of cognitive linguistics and cultural linguistics. The paper considers the question of the expediency of comparing the key nuclear type of the concepts and near-nuclear concepts of two albums by one author with a difference of six years. On the example of the language content of song texts analysis, specific cases of changing and preserving the author's picture of the world are considered. The preservation of the majority of nuclear concepts is noted, but their associative relations are completely changed. The structure of the work consists of two chapters, theoretical and practical ones. In the theoretical part, we reviewed the main theoretical aspects of the concepts of concept and discourse, the methodology for studying them and the main characteristics. In the practical part, we carried out a comprehensive analysis of the linguistic content of song lyrics on the subject of nuclear and near-nuclear concepts, as well as their associative relations. Next, we carried out their comparative analysis. Based on the theoretical and practical chapter of this study, we identified the most optimal methods for highlighting concepts in the author's song discourse, which determines the stated purpose, and also revealed the fact that the conceptual analysis of works of art usually confirms the fact that our perception often does not match with the intention of the author, and direct vocabulary definitions do not reveal the essence of the concept, or even contradict it. As a result of a comparative analysis of the Dark Side Of the Moon and The Wall albums, we identified both similarities and differences between nuclear and near-nuclear concepts. Most of the nuclear concepts remain significant in the conceptual picture of the author’s world, while others have been modified.

Abstract (sommario):
This research paper examines the implications of a feminist appropriation of the fetish and the use of the theory of abjection, as a disruption of phallocentric binary labelling and its notion of idealised femininity. The paper is divided into two sections. The first section includes an analysis of Emily Apter's articles 'Fetishism and Visual Seduction in Mary Kelly's Interim' and an analysis of Janine Antoni's installation 'Gnaw' which form a contextualisation of the issues on which my own visual research is based. These issues revolve around the creation of multiple subject positions for women as both artist and spectator, the recuperation of the seductive image without creating the same power relations apparent in the male gaze and the deployment of an abstract visual femininity to scopically seduce the viewer. In section two, part one, Praveen Adams' article 'The art of analysis: Mary Kelly's Interim and the discourse of the analyst is examined. In this article Adams uses Lacan's theory of discourse to hypothesise that the space of production in Interim is an analogue to the space of production in pyschoanalysis. Part two consists of an examination of the application of the same structural analysis to Antoni's 'Gnaw' and my own 'Compulsive Beauty,' and explores the possibility of a new contextual analysis of feminist art
