Abstract (sommario):
Existing massagers are characterized by relatively high energy consumption during operation, the metal consumption of the structure, complexity of the drive mechanism. Therefore, the search for effective implementation schemes of mixing operations and uniform structure formation of viscous and elastic-plastic raw materials, in particular, minced meat, subject to increased contact interaction while minimizing the force on the products, is relevant to the conducted research. The purpose of this work is to substantiate the technological preparation modes of the given minced meat with the use of a developed vibrating massager, as well as to determine the kinematic parameters of the oscillation system and graphic-analytical analysis of their change. The experimental model of the vibrating massager with an eccentric drive mechanism, a measuring evaluation base of rheological characteristics of the minced ostrich meat, and kinematic parameters of the vibrating drive of the massager, in particular, amplitude-frequency and speed characteristics were developed to carry out the specified tasks. High technological results were obtained when using the forced eccentric drive of the massager, which is characterized by a minimum mass of the oscillation masses of the parts compared to traditional unbalanced vibrators, which allow reducing 2 - 2.5 times the energy consumption to drive the vibrating massager under study. The practical value of the conducted work includes the use of the eccentric forced vibrating exciter for obtaining the force control over the minced meat to be formed, which reduces the oscillation masses of the drive and minimizes the energy consumption for the process, accordingly; it has the simplest structure among the mechanical vibrators, significantly reduces the dynamic loads on the supporting units of the vibrator as well as provides a sufficiently high contact interaction for both the vibration impact and the processing intensity in general.

Abstract (sommario):
The Technology of Orgasm by Rachel Maines is one of the most widely cited works on the history of sex and technology. Maines argues that Victorian physicians routinely used electromechanical vibrators to stimulate female patients to orgasm as a treatment for hysteria. She claims that physicians did not perceive the practice as sexual because it did not involve vaginal penetration. The vibrator was, according to Maines, a labor-saving technology to replace the well-established medical practice of clitoral massage for hysteria. This argument has been repeated almost verbatim in dozens of scholarly works, popular books and articles, a Broadway play, and a feature-length film. Although a few scholars have challenged parts of the book, no one has contested her central argument in the peer-reviewed literature. In this article, we carefully assess the sources cited in the book. We found no evidence in these sources that physicians ever used electromechanical vibrators to induce orgasms in female patients as a medical treatment. The success of Technology of Orgasm serves as a cautionary tale for how easily falsehoods can become embedded in the humanities.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Vibratory massage is now widely used to alleviate muscle fatigue. The effects of different vibration massage intensities on left and right upper trapezius (UT) fatigue have not been examined. Therefore, the present study first examined whether a vibration massage intervention had an effect on UT muscles and second compared the effects of 2 different levels (36 Hz and 46 Hz) of vibratory massage on the right and left oblique muscles under 3 different fatigue conditions. Methods: A total of 23 participants (12 female, 11 male; age: 26.5 ± 3.9 year, height: 170.5 ± 1.6 cm, mass: 57.5 ± 1.5 kg, BMI: 24.3 ± 1.6 kg/m2) were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. The 2 groups of subjects completed isometric contraction fatigue tasks of 30 s of fatigue, 60 s of fatigue and 90 s of fatigue in turn. The specific task of isotonic contraction was performed by subjects holding a 1 kg dumbbell in each hand and performing a straight arm weighted lateral supination exercise. After each exercise, the intervention group was randomized to apply a massage device with a vibration intensity of 36 Hz or 46 Hz on the left and right UT muscles for 5 min each. The control group did not receive any treatment. Both groups then repeated the same fatigue task as before. Then, the effects of different vibration massage interventions on UT muscles were derived by analyzing the changes in maximal voluntary contraction percentage (MVC%) of surface electromyography (sEMG) signals before and after the intervention, and the most effective vibration massage program for relieving left and right UT fatigue was summarized. Then, four classification algorithms were used to label and classify the collected sEMG data, and finally a UT muscle fatigue identification and vibration massage model was constructed. Results: After using the vibration massage level 1 (36 Hz) intervention, the MVC% of the right UT muscle showed significant reductions in the 30 s fatigue task, the 60 s fatigue task and the 90 s fatigue task (R1: p = 0.022, R2: p = 0.005, R3: p = 0.049). After using the vibration massage level 3 (46 Hz) intervention, the MVC% of the right UT muscle showed a significant decrease in both the 60 s fatigue task and the 90 s fatigue task (R2: p = 0.033, R3: p = 0.028). Significant decreases in MVC% for the left UT muscle were found only in the 90 s fatigue task (L3: p = 0.040). Then, by comparing the different performances of four commonly used classification algorithms, it was found that the bagging (accuracy = 0.860) algorithm had higher accuracy. Therefore, the bagging algorithm was used for the UT fatigue identification and vibration massage models. Conclusions: This was the first study to show the impacts of different levels of vibration massage on fatigue alleviation in the left and right UT muscles. Furthermore, the bilateral UT fatigue identification and vibration massage model developed in this study can help people to choose the most appropriate massage protocol for quick relief and relaxation of the UT muscles under three different fatigue tasks.

Abstract (sommario):
BACKGROUND: Vibration therapy (VT) causes an increase in motor unit activation tendency, an involuntary recruitment of earlier sedentary motor units, which increases the muscle fiber force generating capacity and muscle performance. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of vibratory massage therapy at 23 Hz and 35 Hz on grip strength, endurance, and forearm muscle performance (in terms of EMG activity). METHODS: Ten healthy and right-handed men participated voluntarily in this study. The experiment was characterized by the measurement of MVC (maximal voluntary contraction) grip strength and grip endurance time at 50%MVC, accompanied by the corresponding measurement of the EMG signals of the muscles viz., flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS); flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU); extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB); and extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) in supine posture. RESULTS: MANCOVA results showed significant effects of VT frequency on endurance time (p < 0.001); but no significant effect on the grip strength (p = 0.161) and muscle performance (in terms of EMG activities of the forearm muscles). However, VT improves the MVC grip strength and grip endurance time (better at 35 Hz). The Pearson correlation was significant between: weight, palm length, palm circumference, and forearm length with MVC grip strength; and the palm length with the endurance time. In addition, the palm length, palm circumference, and forearm circumference generally serve to better predict MVC grip strength and grip endurance time. CONCLUSIONS: Vibration therapy at 35 Hz for 10 minutes on the forearms had a significant positive effect on the neuromuscular performance to enhance muscle performance of upper extermitites and can be used as the optimal range to study the effect of VT. Findings may be used to prepare guidelines for VT in rehabilitation, healthcare, sports, and medical for therapists.

Abstract (sommario):
Postoperative respiratory complications in patients undergoing cardiac surgery occur in 20‒30% cases, and the most of them can be associated with ineffective cough and bronchial mucus evacuation. The objective. Comparative assessment of effectiveness and safety of methods for stimulating the evacuation of bronchial secretions using oscillatory PEP-therapy (Acapella Duet), oscillatory chest compression insufflator-aspirator “Comfort Cough Plus”, and the traditional method of manual chest percussion in the early period after cardiac surgery.Subjects and Methods. The prospective study included 120 cardiac surgery patients. They were divided into 3 groups (40 in each), depending on the type of the applied respiratory procedure. Distribution into groups was carried out by random selection. All procedures were performed 10‒12 hours after tracheal extubation. Before the procedure and 20 minutes after it, the efficiency of sputum discharge was assessed, gas exchange indices on room air breathing and maximum inspiratory lung capacity (MILC) were measured.Results. Ineffective bronchial mucus evacuating in the early period after tracheal extubation was observed in 86.7% of the patients. A single procedure of both PEP-therapy (Group 1) and mechanical cough stimulation (Group 2) led to improved sputum passage, as evidenced by an increase in the number of patients with productive cough by 4.25 times (p < 0.0009) and 5.3 times (p < 0.0007), respectively. In patients of Groups 1 and 2, an increase in MILC was observed (by 42.2% and 60.0%, respectively, p = 0.000001), the difference between the groups was statistically significant. In Control Group 3, with manual physiotherapy, the average increase in MILC was only 11.6%. Mechanical respiratory therapy procedures led to significant improvement in gas exchange variables, as evidenced by an increase in SpO2 in Groups 1 and 2 (p = 0.000009 and 0.000001, respectively) and a decrease in the proportion of patients with impaired oxygenating lung function (SpO2 below 92%) by 11 and 12 times, respectively (p < 0.01). The most significant changes were revealed in case of mechanical stimulation with aspirator-insufflator due to combination of two methods (oscillatory chest compression and lung inflation). In Control Group, no significant changes of gas exchange variables were observed. Conclusion: Mechanical vibratory methods for stimulating the bronchial secretion evacuation have significant advantages over classical manual chest massage in patients after cardiac surgery. Their positive effect on sputum passage, ventilatory parameters and gas exchange was noted, and the most pronounced effect was observed after oscillatory chest compression with insufflator-aspirator. The procedures were well tolerated and there were no complications associated with them.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractFrom the late nineteenth century onwards, a new range of European and American technologies, powered by electricity and gas, and intended for use on the body and in the home—especially appliances for the domestic kitchen—began to appear in Manila. Electro-mechanical vibratory devices and steam-powered massagers for the body; hair waving and curling machines; and a multitude of technologies for the domestic kitchen, from stoves and water heaters to a gamut of electric and gas gadgetry that included percolators, boilers, electric waffle-irons, grills, and refrigerators (or ice-boxes, their precursor) were targeted largely at the affluent female consumer with promises to improve her physical appearance and health or make her daily life more comfortable. Their introduction and impact in the Philippines can tell a number of compelling stories—the desirability of European or American bourgeois culture, how the trappings of Western lifestyles were imagined, the extent to which the use and purchase of certain technologies aimed at replicating or emulating those lifestyles, or, as this paper explores, the gendered technological infrastructure of the ‘good life’. In this story, modern technologies designed for domestic settings and for use on women's bodies made manifest a myriad of desires and aspirations—prestige, status, cosmopolitanism, modernity, and urbanity. They also articulated a particular sensuousness and pleasure. Electro-vibratory devices, hair styling machines, and kitchen appliances could be experienced by all the senses and thus exerted a visceral appeal; their use proclaimed an enthusiasm for modern technology which, for the first time, emphasized the relevance of modern technology to women's everyday lives by the transformative effects they promised.

Abstract (sommario):
In connection with the growing tension and responsibility of the activities of professional operators, it is necessary to improve the means and methods of their medical and psychophysiological support. Purpose — assessment of the effect of combined physiotherapeutic procedures — CPP (contrasting thermal effects, vibratory massage of the spine and feet, aromatherapy, music therapy) with and without transcranial electrostimulation (TES) on the psychophysiological status and working capacity of operators. Materials and methods. Surveyed 26 professional operators (male) aged 27– 38 years, divided into 2 equal in size groups: the main (MG) and control (CG). All the examined individuals were used the CPP base complex, implemented in a physiotherapy capsule. The complex consisted of 14 daily 45-minute CPP in standard mode. For the MG, the 35-minute TES procedures, also performed in standard mode, were additionally included in the base complex. Prior to the appointment of correctional complexes and after their completion, the subjects were tested for sensorimotor qualities and operator performance. Results. The use of correctional complexes in both groups resulted in positive changes in psychophysiological qualities (acceleration of sensorimotor reactions, reduction in hand tremor) and operator performance (increased attention stability, amount of random access memory, improvement of mental operations). However, in the MG, the identified changes were more pronounced: the level of tremor in this group decreased by 13–14% compared with the baseline, while in the CG — only by 6–7% (p=0,037); the time of the complex sensorimotor reaction decreased on average by 5,1%, in the CG — by 3,8% (p=0,049); the integral indicator of operator’s working capacity in the MG increased on average by 10.8%, in the CG — by 7,7% (p=0,039). Conclusion. The developed correctional complex with the inclusion of TES is a highly effective and safe non-pharmacological technology of emergency optimization of psychophysiological qualities and working capacity of operators.

Abstract (sommario):
: Our aim is to provide a narrative review regarding the prevalence, the associated pathophysiologic pathways and the potential management methods of sexual dysfunction related to ablative surgical techniques for Benign Prostatic Enlargement (BPE). Men suffering from BPE are at high risk of sexual dysfunction due to the disease itself, comorbidities, and pharmacological/surgical treatments. Transurethral resection of the prostate, as the gold standard treatment option for BPE has historically been associated with relatively high rates of postoperative sexual dysfunction problems, mainly retrograde ejaculation but also erectile dysfunction. Ablative surgical techniques, including photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP), transurethral needle ablation (TUNA), Transurethral Microwave Therapy (TUMT), Convective Water Vapor Energy Ablation (Rezum®) and Aquablation® have been proposed as treatment methods able to reduce treatment-related complications for BPE patients, including adverse effects on erectile and ejaculatory function, without compromising the efficacy rates for BPE. The neurovascular bundles can be damaged during TURP due to posterolateral capsular perforation. Ablative techniques and especially PVP theoretically seems to skip this hazard as the distance created from the necrotic area to the capsule is generally larger compared to the distance induced after TURP . However, indirect thermal injury of erectile nerves, which could be induced also by the majority of available ablative techniques could potentially lead to ED. Two special technical characteristics (physiological saline use for tissue ablation and real time penetration depth control) of Aquablation® could be proved beneficial with regard to the effect of the method on erectile function. In general ablative techniques seems to have minor impact on sexual function. However, low methodological quality characterize the most of the studies included in this review mainly due to the impossibility, in many cases, to perform a blind randomization. Also in many studies did not have erectile and ejaculatory function as primary outcomes limiting that way their statistical power to identify significant variations. Management of sexual dysfunction problems arising from ablative surgeries for BPE treatment could be divided in two levels. Firstly, intraoperatively the avoidance of manipulation of crucial structures regarding ejaculatory (bladder neck or ejaculatory ducts) and erectile function (neurovascular bundles) could possibly decrease the negative effect of these procedures on sexual function. Thus, in this direction, modifications of classic ablative techniques have been proposed resulting in encouraging outcomes regarding postoperative sexual function. Secondly, if EjD and/or ED are established the already known treatment choices should be chosen in order sexual function rehabilitation to be achieved. Thus, regarding ED: PDE5i daily or on demand remain the gold standard first line treatment choice followed by intracaver-nosal alprostadil injections in cases of failure, while penile prosthesis implantation must be kept as final definitive solution when all the other methods have failed. Regarding ejaculation disorders (retrograde ejaculation or anejaculation): medical therapy with a-agonists (pseudoephedrine), sperm retrieval from the urine, bladder neck reconstruction, prostatic massage, electroejaculation, penile vibratory stimulation and surgical sperm retrieval are the available treatment options. Further, high quality studies are required to investigate potential side effects of BPE surgery on sexual function and efficient treatment methods to manage them.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Introduction Pelvic massage is remarkable for being one of the oldest and most durable therapeutic medical practices, used for the treatment of genital disease from the Ancient world until the present day. Although it is most commonly associated with diseases of women, especially the historical diagnosis of hysteria, in our modern era pelvic massage is used to treat disease in all human beings regardless of sex. Through the progress of medical specialization and technology, pelvic massage has evolved to become a specialist tool utilized by a subset of physical therapists, augmented by instruments such as wands and especially vibrators. Objective To describe how the justification for and application of therapeutic pelvic massage has evolved through the Western history of medicine, as a lens through which to appreciate the limitations of our contemporary understanding of this practice. Methods Review of primary and secondary sources pertaining to pelvic massage as a treatment for disease, in historical and contemporary medical professional and popular literature. Results Since the earliest documented use of therapeutic pelvic massage to treat female patients in Ancient Egyptian medical texts, doctors have recommended internal and external genital stimulation for various reasons. For most of Western medical history, this intervention was principally used to treat various symptoms that were diagnosed as hysteria in female patients, according to the logic that a wandering womb or collection of ill-humors could be stimulated to migrate into proper position through this means. During the past century, our medical scientific understanding of women’s bodies has expanded beyond hysteria ideology, to better appreciate the anatomic and physiologic similarities between male and female genital and pelvic structures and disease conditions. This evolution has been accompanied by an expansion of the patient populations perceived to benefit from pelvic massage, to include not only females of reproductive age, but older women, men, and transgender patients. Ironically, at the same time that therapeutic pelvic massage has come to rest on a more scientifically sound foundation, its use by urologic and gynecologic surgeons decreased, and it is now practiced primarily by pelvic physical therapists and self-administered by patients utilizing pelvic wand and vibratory technologies. Conclusions Pelvic massage has stood the test of time as an empiric treatment for various diseases, but its etiologic justification has changed significantly over millennia. Whereas previously it was believed to treat specifically uterine disorders in hysterical women, it is now understood to affect the muscle and connective tissues of the pelvic floor, as well as secretory genital structures such as the vagina and prostate. Whether because of its previous attachment to now-defunct hysteria ideology or its current administration by non-physicians, the scientific study of pelvic massage continues to lag behind its application. As referrals to pelvic physical therapy and pelvic wand and vibrator sales increase, further study of the indications for and effects of these interventions is warranted to ensure the ethical and effective application of these resources. Background: Previous studies demonstrated a health improving effect in patients underwent an automatic vibratory massage taking 10 minutes. One of reasons that may explain a healing effect of the automatic massage is a stimulated increase in both blood circulation through vascular system and effective size of blood vessels. Objective: This paper aims to quantify a contribution of the automatic mechanical massage of low extremities into the observed reduction in arterial blood pressure and explain this effect.Material and Methods: In this study, the low extremities of male and female patients were exposed to low frequency (12 Hz) mechanical vibrations for 10 minutes and the change in systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressures before and after this procedure was measured. Results: The experiments showed there is a reduction in systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressures after vibrational massage. There were corresponding 3.5±1.8 mmHg and 3.1±1.6 mm Hg arterial blood pressure reductions among men and 5.5±3.2 mm Hg and 2.2±1.2 mm Hg reductions among women. Conclusion: We explained this effect by increasing effective radius of blood vessels. Based on the Hagen-Poiseuille equation, we made estimates for the relative change in the effective radius of blood vessels. They gave the 0.7% and 1.3% increases in the effective radius of blood vessels in low extremities in men during systole and diastole, respectively, and the corresponding 1.1% and 0.6% increases in the effective radius of blood vessels of low extremities in women during the same periods.

Abstract (sommario):
Good mental preparation of an athlete plays an important role in achieving optimal sports results. An athlete who enters a competition should not feel fatigue resulting from intense physical exercise. Therefore, new and effective methods are being sought that could help accelerate the process of both physical and mental regeneration. Vibrotherapy is one of them. The aim of the study was to determine the optimal frequency of vibration, its duration and the position in which the subjects were placed during the treatments, in relation to the reduction of subjectively perceived exertion muscle pain, mental discomfort, emotional states and the level of cognitive processes that were disturbed by intense physical activity. Sixteen healthy male volunteers were involved in this study. The participants were assessed for their aerobic and anaerobic capacity. Each of the subjects performed a set of intensive physical exercises and then underwent vibrotherapy treatment. In random order, each of the men tested the effectiveness of eight combinations of frequency, duration, and body position. Psychological tests were conducted for each combination: frequency, duration of treatment, and position during treatment, in four stages: (1) before the start of the experiment (baseline POMS measurements), (2) immediately after the exercise (VAS scale, scale examining psychological discomfort and STROOP test), (3) immediately after the vibration treatment (POMS measurements, VAS scale, scale examining psychological discomfort and STROOP test), (4) 24 h after the vibration treatment (VAS scale examining subjective assessment of perceived pain and psychological discomfort). Based on the results, it was concluded that all the studied variables improved significantly over time (after the vibration treatment and 24 h after training). In addition, a statistically significant interaction measurement × frequency was noted for vigor scale (52HZ favored greater improvement in this state), and a statistically significant interaction was found for measurement × time for the VAS scale (p < 0.05) – the lower pain value was indicated 24 h after the 10-min vibration treatment. The type of frequency used, position, and duration of the treatment did not play a statistically significant role in changing STROOP test results and severity of psychological discomfort (p > 0.05).

Abstract (sommario):
Pressure ulcer (PU) is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in spine injuries. We now know that pressure is the single most important etiological factor. The compression of soft tissues results in ischemia and if not relieved, will progress to cause necrosis and ulceration; the basic cause is pressure followed by ischemia and necrosis. PU can develop in Traumatic Brain injured, paraplegic and nonparaplegic patients. Patients with spinal cord injury have reported prevalence of 25 – 40%. Management of pressure ulcer is multicentric. This study was conducted on paraplegic patients admitted in the ward with PU to determine the effectiveness of massage therapy in the management of PU as a therapeutic adjuvant to standard treatment protocol. 36 cases of paraplegic inpatients with stage II and III PU were selected, properly randomized and divided into two groups, A & B. The dimensions of ulcer were recorded. Both groups received standard conventional treatment. Group A received, in addition, massage therapy around the ulcer area using commercially available vibrator for ve minutes continuously, two times daily. Group B patients served as controls. Ulcer diameter and area were measured every week and documented. The group which received massage showed better ulcer heali RESULTS: ng. CONCLUSION. Massage therapy is a cost effective method for management of pressure ulcer and can be easily delivered to the patient by a reliable care giver once it is taught to them.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper offers a close reading of the ancient Greek and Roman texts which Rachel Maines (The Technology of Orgasm, 1999) used as evidence for therapeutic masturbation in the ancient world, and thus presented as precursors for the vibrator. Examining the evidence of the Hippocratic corpus, Celsus, Soranus and Galen, it shows that the lines of transmission between the ancient sources, and in their later reception, are far more complex than her work suggests, and thus challenges her claims for the normality of massage to orgasm in Western medicine. While Maines herself has subsequently insisted that she proposed a ‘hypothesis’ rather than a ‘fact’, in the popular reception of her book this distinction has been almost entirely overlooked, leading to an obscuring of female agency – both as patients, and as healers.

Abstract (sommario):
Nadi Pariksha is the ancient ayurvedic technique of diagnosis through the pulse. It can accurately diagnose physical, mental, and emotional imbalances as well as diseases. It is a non - invasive science that enables to reach the root cause of health issues and not just address the symptoms. Nadi Pariksha understands the vibratory frequency of the pulse at various levels on the Radial artery. Subtle vibrations are read at seven different levels vertically downward that help in ascertaining various functions in the body. The pulse, when examined, reveals both physical & mental characteristics of the patient. This is interpreted in the form of symptoms along with their prognosis, which helps in understanding the cause. Thus, Nadi Pariksha forms the basis for addressing any ailment in an individual. Additionally, it is also the scientific tool that enables an individual to secure their personalized wellness regimes that range from therapeutic massages, personalized diet, exercise programmes, rigorous detoxification and lifestyle transforming experiences.
