Abstract (sommario):
It’s a big deal when the library world gets in the national news. I mean, it doesn’t happen every day. And usually, when it does, the news is not positive. This summer, the children’s library world burst into the national news—and into swift social media discussion—with the ALSC board’s unanimous decision to change the name of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award to the Children’s Literature Legacy Award.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to reveal how the mass media has a very large role to develop literature in Indonesia. This is important to mention considering that literature is one of the signs of a nation's civilization, therefore support from various directions for developing literature is very meaningful. With this research, it is hoped that the world of Indonesian literature can further develop in the future, especially through the role of the mass media. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach, the data was collected through interviews and a comprehensive review of documents. The data obtained is then reduced and compiled into a scientifically justifiable research report. The results of this study show that the contribution of the mass media is very large in the development of literature in Indonesia. Literature in Indonesia has an important role in the national identity as an international exchange. Literature can be called the nation, language, and literature which has become the glue between a country

Abstract (sommario):
Media scholars as well as the public frequently use the terms “mass communication” and “mass media”, but the meaning of these terms is often ambiguous. While it is assumed that everyone knows what these terms mean, the few scholars who attempt to define these terms struggle to capture the essence of their meaning without including elements that are faulty, and this task is becoming even more difficult in the new media environment. We are left with the troubling question: What are the “mass” media? This review constructs an answer to this question in a four step process. The first step features a critical analysis of the literature to identify definitional elements used by scholars. These definitional elements are subjected to four screens that evaluate their utility in a second step. The third step adds elements missing from the literature so as to make the eventual definition more useful in the new media environment. Finally, the fourth step features the construction of a working definition of “mass” media.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is an attempt to analyse publishing critically, in keeping with the current preoccupation with the phenomenon of 'globalisation'. The primary concern of this thesis is to systemise and elaborate a theoretical frame for the study of international publishing by looking into the following major research questions. I. How can we apply the concept of globalisation which has recently dominated discussion in the social sciences in analysing international publishing? 2. What are the major factors which influence contemporary international publishing that have resulted in an uneven intellectual structure? 3. As a case study of these issues what is the publishing situation in Korea in relation to the international publishing scene? In explicating these three research questions, the thesis combines a theoretical review with a field study.

Abstract (sommario):

Like any good public relations campaign, this dissertation aims to offer a persuasive interpretation of certain key facts. The facts, as I see them, are as follows: first, a great number of contemporary novels and poems explore the personal and social consequences of diasporic migration. Second, these texts, along with their print and electronic paratexts, share a pervasive interest in media. And third, these works are rarely read in conversation with one another, despite their mutual concern for migration and media. Owing to this last point in particular, scholarship has failed to fully address the broader media theories developed in and across these works, and failed to fully pursue how these media theories respond to, and critically comment on, the prospects for deliberative democracy in an age of globalization. In response, my project argues that diasporic media practices advance a transnational critique of public sphere theories. And yet, I claim this critique seeks to recover the resources of such theories and redeploy them in a global context. The four chapters of this dissertation are arranged in a communications circuit that treats (in order) media production, circulation, reception, and survival. Together, these chapters observe how diasporic populations shift from invisible anomalies to visible publics through their highly stylized and politicized use of media technologies. Ultimately, I emphasize that contemporary American literature cannot be understood without engaging reading and writing publics from the Dominican Republic, Canada, Nigeria, Korea, and more.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation examines how the contemporary French novel is responding to television. While much has been written regarding the threat that television poses to books, narrative, and language, the survival strategies of writers have been largely overlooked. Rather than lamenting the novel's decline, this study asks how writers are rethinking the purpose and form of the novel to better represent televisual subjectivity and to adapt the genre to a new cultural paradigm. Contemporary novelists must negotiate a tension between distinguishing the novel from the medium of television while also integrating their work into mainstream culture in order to remain relevant. How can the novel both rival television and borrow from it?

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
AbstractTaking contemporary visual discourse on ‘precarious passages’ as a starting point, Sander’s contribution explores the media and material conditions of migrant maritime mobilities around 1900. In the wake of the second wave of mass migration to the United States, a new kind of steamship was developed that shaped the experience of the passage from the ‘Old’ to the New World: the Grand Ocean Lines. Not unlike today, the parameters of this experience were based on economic and social structures. While the great mass of migrants traveled under unreasonably perilous conditions in the dark and dirty steerage holds of the ship, the upper decks of the ocean liners developed into ‘Grand Hotels,’ offering the first- and second-class passengers luxurious voyages on the very same steamers. Alfred Stieglitz’s famous cubist photograph “The Steerage” (1907) powerfully shows these divergent class conditions. The picture, in which new formal parameters are combined with a clear look at everyday reality on the steamship, thus became one of the most important images of maritime modernity.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the functioning features of precedent texts in modern media discourse. Texts by F.M. Dostoevsky, namely, fiction, journalism and epistolary heritage, served as the research material. The relevance of the study is explained by the intertextual nature of the modern media space. The article shows that along with the use of Dostoevsky's precedent texts as signs of high culture, the modern media space also actively manifests the features of the postmodern cultural paradigm. The specifics of the latter include metatextuality, irony, various kinds of transformation, e.g., in headlines, which indicates their game foregrounding. Special attention is paid, firstly, to various types of intertextuality and ways of precedent phenomena foregrounding; secondly, to their use in various media areas (advertising, urban naming) and genres (interviews, internet blogs, etc.). The problem of recoding precedent phenomena is considered against the background of the use of signs of high culture as a form of reflection of modern mass consciousness in modern media communication, which is of research interest from an axiological point of view.

Abstract (sommario):
Porous transport layers are an integral part of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFC). In order to optimize the catalyst layer performance and reduce catalyst consumption, a thorough understanding of mass transport through porous media is necessary. Currently, there is a lack of experimental measurements of effective mass transport properties of porous transport layers. Further, mass transport theories in the literature, such as the binary friction model by Kerkhof [1], have not been extensively validated for porous media. In the present study, mass transport measurements have been performed on the porous media of a PEMFC, namely a GDL and an MPL. The experimental setup described by Pant et al. [2] has been used. The setup uses the diffusion bridge/counter-diffusion technique for the mass transport measurements. The experimental setup has the advantage that it can be used to perform studies for pure diffusion and convection-diffusion mass transport. The setup also facilitates measurement of permeability of porous media, which can then be used in convection-diffusion studies. Preliminary permeability measurements of GDL and MPL from the setup show good agreement with values available in literature. In preliminary experimentation, the conventional diffusivity correlations like Bruggeman equation have been found to overpredict the diffusivities.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract An alternative modeling approach is described for unsaturated porous-media samples, where both irreversible and equilibrium thermodynamic arguments are used to set up a simple coupled differential equation set. Predictions based on numerical evaluations of the foregoing set demonstrate the nonlinear temperature and fluid profiles that have been observed in experiments with unsaturated water-in-soil samples. Minimal literature and empirical input is required to quantify parameters. Comparisons with data from small scale experiments show good agreements. It is argued that such an approach could lead to acceptable simulation schemes for poorly-defined media containing several nonreacting fluids.

Abstract (sommario):
Study of gas diffusion is critical in understanding the process of mass transfer in porous media, which is an integral part of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). An experimental method is presented to study the mass transfer processes in micro-nano capillaries, which is further extended to study the transport in the porous media of fuel cells. A diffusion bridge setup, similar to the one presented by Remick and Geankoplis [1] has been used. The experimental setup facilitates the study of binary and multicomponent mixture transport through micro-nano capillaries and porous media. The setup can perform studies for two cases viz., pure diffusion and convection-diffusion. Using pressure controls in both channels, the pressure gradient across the capillaries is varied to study the convection diffusion process in detail. The results obtained from the study will be used to review various models of mass transport available in literature.

Abstract (sommario):
Moldova’s politics, economy, justice system and media are increasingly dominated by a powerful group of elites, led by oligarchs - a new breed of businessmen-politicians who have emerged in the past decade - controlling strategic sectors of the economy and finance, hijacking the political system, taming the judiciary and acquiring monopolistic control of mass media, to promote and protect their vast business empires. Alongside traditional clan, kinship and patronage networks these elites exert influence through informal politics , shaping Moldova’s politics and economy, often hindering reforms for democratisation, rule of law, meritocracy and transparency. This helpdesk report looks at the nature and role of clans in Moldova in the country’s politics and economy. This literature review utilises academic as well as grey sources, research papers, media and blogs published mainly in the past ten years. The sources reveal a paucity of Moldova centric material, especially on the sub-issue of clans, but much more literature is available on the role of informal politics and state capture by elites, especially oligarchs, in Moldova. The evidence found did not address gender and disability issues.

Abstract (sommario):
Mountain regions are known as the “water towers of the world” for their capacity to store freshwater in glaciers. River basins with glaciers on their headwaters benefit from water stored as ice, representing a regulating water source for downstream river flow, particularly during the summer and in dry periods, especially in times of drought. However, human-induced global warming has caused glaciers to retreat, meaning the ice mass that has formed over many years melts faster than snowfall can replace. Currently, glaciers are melting at double the speed they have in the past two decades, with ever decreasing water availability for those that depend on glacial meltwater for their lives. This technical background report for the 2023 edition of the Interconnected Disaster Risks report analyses the root causes, drivers, impacts and potential solutions for the mountain glaciers melting risk tipping point our world is facing through an analysis of academic literature, media articles and expert interviews.

As the Russian genocidal, terrorist, and ecocidal war has posed acute challenges to the education and upbringing of student youth. A young person is called not only to acquire knowledge but to receive them simultaneously with comprehensive national, civic, and moral-spiritual upbringing. Abstract (sommario):
The article clarifies of gender identity stereotypes in modern media. The main gender stereotypes covered in modern mass media are analyzed and refuted. The model of gender relations in the media is reflected mainly in the stereotypical images of men and woman. The features of the use of gender concepts in modern periodicals for women and men were determined. The most frequently used derivatives of these macroconcepts were identified and analyzed in detail. It has been found that publications for women and men are full of various gender concepts that are used in different contexts. Ingeneral, theanalysisofthe concept-maximums and concept-minimum gender and their characteristics is carried out in the context of gender stereotypes that have been forme dand function in the society, system atizing the a ctual presentations. The study of the gender concept is relevant because it reveals new trends and features of modern gender images. Taking into account the special features of gender-labeled periodicals in general and the practical absence of comprehensive scientific studies of the gender concept in particular, there is a need to supplement Ukrainian science with this topic. Gender psychology, which is served by methods of various sciences, primarily sociological, pedagogical, linguistic, psychological, socio-psychological. Let us pay attention to linguistic and psycholinguistic methods in gender studies. Linguistic methods complement intelligence research tasks, associated with speech, word and text. Psycholinguistic methods used in gender psychology (semantic differential, semantic integral, semantic analysis of words and texts), aimed at studying speech messages, specific mechanisms of origin and perception, functions of speech activity in society, studying the relationship between speech messages and gender properties participants in the communication, to analyze the linguistic development in connection with the general development of the individual. Nowhere in gender practice there is the whole arsenal of psychological methods that allow you to explore psychological peculiarities of a person like observation, experiments, questionnaires, interviews, testing, modeling, etc. The methods of psychological self-diagnostics include: the gender aspect of the own socio-psychological portrait, a gender biography as a variant of the biographical method, aimed at the reconstruction of individual social experience. In the process of writing a gender autobiography, a person can understand the characteristics of his gender identity, as well as ways and means of their formation. Socio-psychological methods of studying gender include the study of socially constructed women’s and men’s roles, relationships and identities, sexual characteristics, psychological characteristics, etc. The use of gender indicators and gender approaches as a means of socio-psychological and sociological analysis broadens the subject boundaries of these disciplines and makes them the subject of study within these disciplines. And also, in the article a combination of concrete-historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is implemented. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. Also used is a method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-stamped journals. It was he who allowed quantitatively to identify and explore the features of the gender concept in the pages of periodicals for women and men. A combination of historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is also implemented in the article. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. A method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-labeled journals is also used. It allowed to identify and explore the features of the gender concept quantitatively in the periodicals for women and men. The conceptual perception and interpretation of the gender concept «woman», which is highlighted in the modern gender-labeled press in Ukraine, requires the elaboration of the polyfunctionality of gender interpretations, the comprehension of the metaphorical perception of this image and its role and purpose in society. A gendered approach to researching the gender content of contemporary periodicals for women and men. Conceptual analysis of contemporary gender-stamped publications within the gender conceptual sphere allows to identify and correlate the meta-gender and gender concepts that appear in society.

Abstract (sommario):
Literature focusing on the aftermath of conflict in the Western Balkans, notes that many people remain focused on stereotypes and prejudices between different ethnic groups stoking fear of a return to conflict. This rapid review examines evidence focussing on various interventions that seek to promote inter-group relations that are greatly elusive in the political realm in the Western Balkan. Socio-political change requires a growing critical mass that sees the merit in progressive and conciliatory ethnic politics and is capable of side-lining divisive ethno-nationalist forces. This review provides an evidence synthesis of pathways through which micro-level, civil-society-based interventions can produce ‘ripple effects’ in society and scale up to affect larger geographic areas and macro-level socio-political outcomes. These interventions help in the provision of alternative platforms for dealing with divisive nationalism in post-conflict societies. There is need to ensure that the different players participating in reconciliation activities are able to scale up and attain broader reach to ensure efficacy and hence enabling them to become ‘multiplier of peace.’ One such way is by providing tools for activism. The involvement of key people and institutions, who are respected and play an important role in the everyday life of communities and participants is an important factor in the design and success of reconciliation initiatives. These include the youth, objective media, and journalists. The transformation of conflict identities through reconciliation-related activities is theorised as leading to the creation of peace constituencies that support non-violent approaches to conflict resolution and sustainable peace The success of reconciliation interventions largely depends on whether it contributes to redefining otherwise antagonistic identities and hostile relationships within a community or society.

Butyrina, Maria, e Valentina Ryvlina. MEDIATIZATION OF ART: VIRTUAL MUSEUM AS MASS MEDIA. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, febbraio 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11075.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The research is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of mediatization of art on the example of virtual museums. Main objective of the study is to give communication characteristics of the mediatized socio-cultural institutions. The subject of the research is forms, directions and communication features of virtual museums. Methodology. In the process of study, the method of communication analysis, which allowed to identify and characterize the main factors of the museum’s functioning as a communication system, was used. Among them, special emphasis is put on receptive and metalinguistic functions. Results / findings and conclusions. The need to be competitive in the information space determines the gradual transformation of socio-cultural institutions into mass media, which is reflected in the content and forms of dialogue with recipients. When cultural institutions begin to function as media, they take on the features of media structures that create a communication environment localized by the functions of communicators and audience expectations. Museums function in such a way that along with the real art space they form a virtual space, which puts the recipients into the reality of the exhibitions based on the principle of immersion. Mediaization of art on the example of virtual museum institutions allows us to talk about: expanding of the perceptual capabilities of the audience; improvement of the exposition function of mediatized museums with the help of Internet technologies; interactivity of museum expositions; providing broad contextual background knowledge necessary for a deep understanding of the content of works of art; the possibility to have a delayed viewing of works of art; absence of thematic, time and space restrictions; possibility of communication between visitors; a huge target audience. Significance. The study of the mediatized forms of communication between museums and visitors as well as the directions of their transformation into media are certainly of interest to the scientific field of “Social Communications”.
