Abstract (sommario):
In a world of wide-scale information sharing, data are described in different formats, i.e. data structures, values and schemas. Querying such sources entails techniques that can bridge the data formats. Some existing techniques deal with schema mapping and view complementary aspects of the problem. Important ones, consider producing all the possible mappings for a pair of schemas, insinuating accompanying semantics in the mappings and adapting correct mappings as schemas evolve. In this work, we consider the problem of discovering mappings as schemas of autonomous sources are gradually revealed. Using as an example setting an overlay of peer databases, we present a schema mapping solution that discovers correct mappings as peer schemas are gradually revealed to remote peers. Mapping discovery is schema-centric and incorporates new semantics as they are unveiled. Mapping experience is reused and possible mappings are ranked so that the best choice is presented to the user. The experimental study confirms the suitability of the proposed solution to dynamic settings of heterogeneous sources.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper is devoted to the problem of piecewise-linear approximation of mapping for the elliptic system of solutions defined on triangular grids. A mapping is build to approximate the differential, and the estimate of error of approximation that does not depend on the degree of degeneracy of triangles of the grid. An analogous estimate is obtained for mappings which approximate the differential of solution of Beltrami equation.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper summarizes results obtained by the authors regarding the utility of truncated point mappings which have been recently published in a series of papers. The method described here is applicable to the analysis of multidimensional, multiparameter, periodic nonlinear systems by means of truncated point mappings. Based on multinomial truncation, an explicit analytical expression is determined for the point mapping in terms of the states and parameters of the system to any order of approximation. By combining this approach with analytical techniques, such as the perturbation method employed here, we obtain a powerful tool for finding periodic solutions and for analyzing their stability. The versatility of truncated point mapping method is demonstrated by applying it to study the limit cycles of van der Pol and coupled van der Pol oscillators, the periodic solutions of the forced Duffing’s equation and for a parametric analysis of periodic solutions of Mathieu’s equation.

Reis, Julio Cesar Dos. "Mapping Adaptation between Biomedical Knowledge Organization Systems". Thesis, Paris 11, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA112231/document.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Modern biomedical information systems require exchanging and retrieving data between them, due to the overwhelming available data generated in this domain. Knowledge Organization Systems (KOSs) offer means to make the semantics of data explicit which, in turn, facilitates their exploitation and management. The evolution of semantic technologies has led to the development and publication of an ever increasing number of large KOSs for specific sub-domains like genomics, biology, anatomy, diseases, etc. The size of the biomedical field demands the combined use of several KOSs, but it is only possible through the definition of mappings. Mappings interconnect entities of domain-related KOSs via semantic relations. They play a key role as references to enable advanced interoperability tasks between systems, allowing software applications to interpret data annotated with different KOSs. However, to remain useful and reflect the most up-to-date knowledge of the domain, the KOSs evolve and new versions are periodically released. This potentially impacts established mappings demanding methods to ensure, as automatic as possible, their semantic consistency over time. Manual maintenance of mappings stands for an alternative only if a restricted number of mappings are available. Otherwise supporting methods are required for very large and highly dynamic KOSs. To address such problem, this PhD thesis proposes an original approach to adapt mappings based on KOS changes detected in KOS evolution. The proposal consists in interpreting the established correspondences to identify the relevant KOS entities, on which the definition relies on, and based on the evolution of these entities to propose actions suited to modify mappings. Through this investigation, (i) we conduct in-depth experiments to understand the evolution of KOS mappings; we propose automatic methods (ii) to analyze mappings affected by KOS evolution, and (iii) to recognize the evolution of involved concepts in mappings via change patterns; finally (iv) we design techniques relying on heuristics explored by novel algorithms to adapt mappings. This research achieved a complete framework for mapping adaptation, named DyKOSMap, and an implementation of a software prototype. We thoroughly evaluated the proposed methods and the framework with real-world datasets containing several releases of mappings between biomedical KOSs. The obtained results from experimental validations demonstrated the overall effectiveness of the underlying principles in the proposed approach to adapt mappings. The scientific contributions of this thesis enable to largely automatically maintain mappings with a reasonable quality, which improves the support for mapping maintenance and consequently ensures a better interoperability over time

Abstract (sommario):

This Master thesis sets its goals in researching and understanding the structure of different educational systems. The main goal that this paper inflicts is to develop a middleware aiming at translating courses between different educational systems.

The procedure is to find the meaning of objects and courses from the different educational systems point of view, this is mainly done through processes such as identifying the context, semantics and state of the objects involved, perhaps in different activities. The middleware could be applied, with small changes, to any structured system of education.

This thesis introduces a framework for using ontologies in the translation and integration of course aspects in different processes. It suggests using ontologies when adopting and structuring different educational systems on an international level. This thesis will, through an understanding of ontologies construct a middleware for the translation process between different courses in the different educational systems. As an example courses in Sweden, Germany and Tajikistan have been used for the mapping and constructing learning goals and qualifications.

Abstract (sommario):
The goal of this invited tutorial paper is to provide an overview of three current research efforts in heterogeneous computing that focus on methods for determining a mapping of an application onto a heterogeneous suite of machines. The first study involves a genetic-algorithm approach for mapping the subtasks of an application task onto the machines in a distributed heterogeneous system. This is a static compile-time approach that must be used off-line (prior to task execution) due to its long run time. The second topic is the high-level design of components of an intelligent operating system for mapping and dynamically remapping automatic target recognition tasks onto a heterogeneous parallel platform. The intelligent operating system uses a new technique for dynamically selecting new mappings on-line during task execution from among choices precomputed off-line. Last, some initial preliminary results from a new research project for designing a dynamic mapping heuristic that does not use precomputed mappings is described. This dynamic heuristic is fast and is suitable for operation during application execution. Future research directions are discussed for all three projects.

STEP offers a mechanism of product data exchange between heterogeneous systems. This paper introduces a UML-based mapping methodology for the product data exchange. The suggested mapping methodology has been applied to two different mappings. One is a mapping for the data exchange between a CAD and a PDM system. The other is the STEP to XML mapping for the information communication on the Internet.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a methodology to analytically predict the stable and unstable periodic solutions for n-dimensional discrete dynamical systems. The positive and negative iterative mappings of discrete maps are introduced for the mapping structure of the periodic solutions. The complete bifurcation and stability of the stable and unstable periodic solutions relative to the positive and negative mapping structures are presented. A discrete dynamical system with the Henon map is investigated as an example. The Poincare mapping sections relative to the Neimark bifurcation of periodic solutions are presented, and the chaotic layers for the discrete system with the Henon map are observed.

Abstract (sommario):
Maintenance of roadside ditches is important to avoid localized flooding and premature failure of pavements. Scheduling effective preventative maintenance requires mapping of the ditch profile to identify areas requiring excavation of long-term sediment accumulation. High-resolution, high-quality point clouds collected by mobile LiDAR mapping systems (MLMS) provide an opportunity for effective monitoring of roadside ditches and performing hydrological analyses. This study evaluated the applicability of mobile LiDAR for mapping roadside ditches for slope and drainage analyses. The performance of alternative MLMS units was performed. These MLMS included an unmanned ground vehicle, an unmanned aerial vehicle, a portable backpack system along with its vehicle-mounted version, a medium-grade wheel-based system, and a high-grade wheel-based system. Point cloud from all the MLMS units were in agreement in the vertical direction within the ±3 cm range for solid surfaces, such as paved roads, and ±7 cm range for surfaces with vegetation. The portable backpack system that could be carried by a surveyor or mounted on a vehicle and was the most flexible MLMS. The report concludes that due to flexibility and cost effectiveness of the portable backpack system, it is the preferred platform for mapping roadside ditches, followed by the medium-grade wheel-based system. Furthermore, a framework for ditch line characterization is proposed and tested using datasets acquired by the medium-grade wheel-based and vehicle-mounted portable systems over a state highway. An existing ground filtering approach is modified to handle variations in point density of mobile LiDAR data. Hydrological analyses, including flow direction and flow accumulation, are applied to extract the drainage network from the digital terrain model (DTM). Cross-sectional/longitudinal profiles of the ditch are automatically extracted from LiDAR data and visualized in 3D point clouds and 2D images. The slope derived from the LiDAR data was found to be very close to highway cross slope design standards of 2% on driving lanes, 4% on shoulders, as well as 6-by-1 slope for ditch lines. Potential flooded regions are identified by detecting areas with no LiDAR return and a recall score of 54% and 92% was achieved by the medium-grade wheel-based and vehicle-mounted portable systems, respectively.
