Abstract (sommario):
Organizational leaders have increasingly turned to enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications, also known as decision-support systems, to make their firms' operational, tactical, and strategic processes more efficient and effective in the changing global marketplace. High failure rates in ERP systems implementations make these projects risky, however. Most prior research on critical success factors for conventional ERP implementation has been on large enterprises, resulting in a gap in knowledge on these factors in the small and medium enterprises that constitute the majority of U.S. employer firms. A qualitative modified Delphi study with an expert panel of U.S. manufacturing consultants and 3 iterative rounds of data collection and analysis revealed consensus on 8 critical success factors in ERP implementations, with the highest agreement on top management support and commitment, enterprise resource planning fit with the organization, quality management, and a small internal team of the best employees. In addition to furthering knowledge in the fields of leadership and enterprise applications, the study expands enterprise resource planning experts' and scholars' understanding of strategies to improve project success and the triple bottom line for any size enterprise in the manufacturing industry. Practitioners in the ERP industry can also apply approaches outlined during ERP implementations to mitigate risk during these engagements. Implications for positive social change include additional job opportunities and higher wages through increased efficiencies in ERP applications.

Abstract (sommario):
The adoption of Enterprise Resource Planning tools has improved business processes in organisations. This increase has, however come with challenges for the small and medium business sector. First the adoption and deployment of proprietary ERP comes at great cost for organisations whilst it is also difficult for the organisations to ensure that scalability is introduced due to the dynamic change in the SME sector. The adoption and use of open source ERP tools then presents an opportunity for the SME sector. The usage of open source software has increased over the years. This increase has also extended to open source ERP tools. These tools offer the same functions as the proprietary at a fraction of the cost. Despite the benefits that open source ERP offers diffusion of this technology into the SME sector in South Africa has been minimal. This means the SME sector in South Africa is not benefiting from the widely available cost effective open source ERP available in the market. An opportunity therefore exists for them to utilise the technology to gain competitive advantage. The research was done primarily to determine the open source ERP adoption patterns of SMEs in the Vaal region. The research sought to determine the drivers for ERP adoption and barriers to adoption. Focus was specifically extended to investigating knowledge on open source alternatives. The results from the research indicate that the SMEs understand the benefits of adopting ERP for their businesses. The research further revealed that the adoption factors identified in the literature are still relevant in South Africa. The factors identified included costs, lack of training, lack of support, lack of knowledge and the lack of open source vendors. The empirical research also identified that the SME still harbour fear about open source ERP tools due to lack of training ,support and knowledge .From the study it is clear that a new approach needs to be taken to encourage adoption of open source ERP. These approaches include giving incentives to SMEs to adopt open source ERP. These incentives may be in the form of training packages and skills workshops to help overcome the barriers and improve implementation of open source ERP. The research identified the critical need for increased formal education and training in open source software development and emphasis on ERP tools. Government research bodies need to play a role in this area. For an example, there is need for SME and university collaborations in open source ERP deployment, whereby the latter needs to include software development tools in their curricula for SMEs so as to increase awareness. Clear–cut comparisons of existing proprietary systems against open source systems by focusing on functional and technological requirements need to be undertaken. This will help to reflect a cost benefit analysis as well as interoperability between the open source ERP and existing systems. During the adoption process, SME are encouraged to go through the full life cycle of open source ERP adoption. In this cycle the SME needs to do a thorough analysis regarding selection, implementation, integration, migration, training and evaluation of installed tools. That way they will gain the competitive advantage afforded by the tools.

Yilmaz, Tuba. "Dynamic resource allocation in manufacturing and service industries". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/51729.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis, we study three applications of dynamic resource allocation: the first two consider dynamic lead-time quotation in make-to-order (MTO) systems with substitutable products and order cancellations, respectively; and the third application is a manpower allocation problem with job-teaming constraints. Matching supply and demand for manufacturing and service industries has been a fundamental focus of operations management literature, which concentrated on optimizing or improving supply-side decisions since demand has generally been assumed to be exogenously determined. However, recent business trends and advances in consumer behavior modeling have shown that demand for goods and services can clearly be shaped by various decisions that a firm makes, such as price and lead-time. In fact, competition between companies is no longer mainly based on price or product features; lead-time is one of the strategic measures to evaluate suppliers. In MTO manufacturing or service environments that aim to satisfy the customers' unique needs, lead-time quotation impacts the actual demand of the products and the overall profitability of the firm. In the first two parts of the thesis, we study the dynamic lead-time quotation problem in pure MTO (or service) systems characterized by lead-time sensitive Poisson demand and exponentially distributed service times. We formulate the problem as an infinite horizon Markov decision process (MDP) with the objective of maximizing the long-run expected average profit per unit time, where profits are defined to specifically account for delays in delivery of the customer orders. We study dynamic lead-time quotation problem in two particular settings; one setting with the possibility of demand substitution and another setting with order cancellations. The fundamental trade-off in lead-time quotation is between quoting short lead-times and attaining them. In case of demand substitution, i.e., in presence of substitutable products and multiple customer classes with different requirements and margins, this trade-off also includes capacity allocation and order acceptance decisions. In particular, one needs to decide whether to allocate capacity to a low-margin order now, or whether to reserve capacity for potential future arrivals of high-margin orders by considering customer preferences, the current workload in the system, and the future arrivals. In the case of order cancellations, one needs to take into account the probability of cancellation of orders currently in the system and quote lead-times accordingly; otherwise quotation of a longer lead-time may result in the loss of customer order, lower utilization of resources, and, in turn, reduced in profits. In Chapter 2, we study a dynamic lead-time quotation problem in a MTO system with two (partially) substitutable products and two classes of customers. Customers decide to place an order on one of the products or not to place an order, based on the quoted lead-times. We analyze the optimal profit and the structure of the optimal lead-time policy. We also compare the lead-time quotes and profits for different quotation strategies (static vs. dynamic) with or without substitution. Numerical results show that substitution and dynamic quotation have synergetic effects, and higher benefits can be obtained by dynamic quotation and/or substitution when difference in product revenues or arrival rates, or total traffic intensity are higher. In Chapter 3, we study a dynamic lead-time quotation problem in a MTO system with single product considering the order cancellations. The order cancellations can take place during the period that the order is being processed (either waiting or undergoing processing), or after the processing is completed, at the delivery to the customer. We analyze the behavior of optimal profit in terms of cancellation parameters. We show that the optimal profit does not necessarily decrease as cancellation rate increases through a numerical study. When the profit from a cancelled order, arrival rate of customers, or lead-time sensitivity of customers are high, there is a higher probability that optimal profit increases as cancellation rate increases. We also compare the cancellation scenarios with the corresponding no-cancellation scenarios, and show that there exists a cancellation scenario that is at least as good in terms of profit than a no-cancellation scenario for most of the parameter settings. In Chapter 4, we study the Manpower Allocation Problem with Job-Teaming Constraints with the objective of minimizing the total completion time of all tasks. The problem arises in various contexts where tasks require cooperation between workers: a team of individuals with varied expertise required in different locations in a business environment, surgeries requiring different composition of doctors and nurses in a hospital, a combination of technicians with individual skills needed in a service company. A set of tasks at random locations require a set of capabilities to be accomplished, and workers have unique capabilities that are required by several tasks. Tasks require synchronization of workers to be accomplished, hence workers arriving early at a task have to wait for other required workers to arrive in order to start processing. We present a mixed integer programming formulation, strengthen it by adding cuts and propose heuristic approaches. Experimental results are reported for low and high coordination levels, i.e., number of workers that are required to work simultaneously on a given task.

Abstract (sommario):
The term resource is used to refer to a machine, tool-group, piece of equipment or personnel. Optimization models for resource maintenance are obtained in conjunction with other production related decisions like production planning, production scheduling, resource allocation and job inspection. Emphasis is laid on integrating the above inter-dependent decisions into a unified optimization framework. This is accomplished for large stationary resources, small non-stationary resources with high breaking rate and for resources that form a part of a network. Owing to large problem size and high uncertainty, the optimal decisions are determined by formulating and solving the above problems as Markov decision processes (MDPs). Approximate dynamic programming based algorithms are used for solving the large optimization problems at hand. The performance of resulting near optimal policies is compared with that of traditional formulations in all cases. The latter treat the resource maintenance decisions independent of other manufacturing related decisions. In certain formulations, the resource state is not completely observable. This results in a partially observable MDP (POMDP). An alternative algorithm for the solution of POMDP is developed, where several mixed integer linear programs (MILPs) are solved during each ADP iteration. This helps obtain better quality solutions for the POMDPs with very large or continuous action spaces in an efficient manner.

Abstract (sommario):
A simulation model is used to investigate the impact of increased parts commonality on the operating characteristics of a manufacturing firm using MRP. To enable increased generalization about commonality, its impact is studied under a variety of environmental conditions. These conditions are defined by operational factors which manipulate end item demand patterns, setup time, lot sizing method, and the degree to which overall plant processing requirements are disaggregated and allocated to separate work centers. The manufacturing performance measures used, such as average processing time and standard deviation of processing time, focus on capacity requirements. A new measure, system disruption, is introduced. This measure focuses attention on the resource reallocation which may be required with the institution of increased commonality. The results demonstrate that increased commonality can in some cases lead to the beneficial effect of a sizable reduction in average processing time without necessarily being accompanied by an increase in workload variability. The results also show that it is very important to consider the impact of increased commonality on an individual work center basis as well as on the plant-wide basis, since workload may be redistributed from work center to work center by the institution of commonality. Previous commonality studies have generally shown that increased commonality will usually lead to the detrimental effect of an increase in period to period workload variability. This study demonstrates that such is not always the case. In fact, a strategic institution of commonality in order to totally eliminate the processing requirements for certain work centers may actually allow a decrease in workload variability.

Abstract (sommario):
The purposes of this dissertation were to define enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, assess the varying performance benefits flowing from different ERP system implementation statuses, and investigate the impact of critical success factors (CSFs) on the ERP system deployment process. A conceptual model was developed and a survey instrument constructed to gather data for testing the hypothesized model relationships. Data were collected through a cross-sectional field study of Indian production firms considered pioneers in understanding and implementing ERP systems. The sample data were drawn from a target population of 900 firms belonging to the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The production firms in the CII member directory represent a well-balanced mix of firms of different sizes, production processes, and industries. The conceptual model was tested using factor analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and univariate Anova. The results indicate that the contributions of different ERP system modules vary with different measures of changes in performance and that a holistic ERP system contributes to performance changes. The results further indicate that the contributions of CSFs vary with different measures of changes in performance and that CSFs and the holistic ERP system influences the success achieved from deployments. Also, firms that emphasize CSFs throughout the ERP implementation process achieve greater performance benefits as compared to those that focus on CSFs during the initial ERP system deployment. Overall, the results of the study support the relationships hypothesized in the conceptual model.

Piron, Susan. "A case study approach to assess the growth towards world class at EH Walton Packaging (Pty) Ltd". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1018759.

Abstract (sommario):
The Printing and Packaging Industry in South Africa has become very competitive over the last decade. Imports and the move towards environmentally friendly packaging have put additional strain on certain sectors of this industry. EH Walton Packaging (Pty) Ltd is one of oldest converters in the industry, established in 1845, and has always been a leader with regards to new technology. It has grown from a small, family business to one of the biggest and most respected in South Africa, but it is still a private company. Due to the rapid growth the shareholders approved a multi-million rand expansion project in 2000. After completion the anticipated increase in shareholder value did not materialize, even though the production facility is always busy. The objective of this research study is to demonstrate to senior management that quality does not end with accreditation of ISO 9001:2000, but that total quality management is invaluable as a business strategy to reach world class manufacturing standards and to sustain organisational excellence. The research will investigate the origins and development of total quality management and world-class manufacturing and extract the most important elements that form the basis of sustainable competitiveness, as well as research done on the reasons why businesses fail. These elements will be further investigated, with special emphasis on the African/South African environment. Research showed that sustained excellence in business and quality is based on customer focus, guided by strategic planning, with leadership at the core, enhanced by philosophy, employee improvement and involvement, and quality assurance. Failure of achieving excellence is best summarized by Deming’s Seven Deadly Sins. The case study approach that was followed to determine the status of total quality elements within the company yielded contrasting results. A number of the “sins” were identified as present in the business strategy; levels of leadership varies from traditional Summary to high performance; understanding of where the company is heading is fragmented; there are no social programs in place and training only concentrates on apprenticeships and not on developing shop floor skills – to mention a few. Surprising is the world-class orientation with regards to customers; but again, this is contrasted with the lack of active customer satisfaction initiatives. The study concludes that although many negative aspects exist and that the prevailing culture does not appear to support change towards world-class growth, there is an element of positive energy among employees. Most of the employees who participated in the study believe that the company has a bright future. It is these attitudes that must be used to drive change, with a clear vision, good strategies and world-class leaders.

Abstract (sommario):
Manufacturing industries used to develop their operation strategies focusing on the cost of manufacturing, high volume production, and stabilizing the customer demand. But due to advancements in technology and evolving customer needs, the market demand became highly volatile, dynamic and customers expected customization, low volume products, and faster deliveries. This evolution in customer needs has pushed the companies to improve their operating systems to be more flexible, agile, and adaptable to the market’s dynamic character. In order to effectively evolves themselves and achieve more flexibility, manufacturing companies had to implement effective manufacturing, planning, and control systems.  The first breakthrough in planning systems came in the year 1975 where a systemic approach called material requirements planning was introduced by Orlicky. MRP has become the global for production planning and inventory management in manufacturing industries. Later, over the years, research on the planning systems has brought modifications in MRP and it was evolved into closed-loop MRP. Further into the late 1980’s availability of technology led to an introduction of a newly evolved system called the Manufacturing resource planning which resulted in a holistic approach in material planning involving, financial and accounting functions which improved the planning efficiency. Further advancement in technology resulted in advanced planning systems like Enterprise resource planning and Advanced planning and scheduling.  On the contrary, though there has been a lot of advancement in technology and effective production planning methods, there are still discrepancies in obtained results when compared to theory. This is because the existing systems were based either solely on push production or pull production strategy. There is a lack of a hybrid system that includes the positives of both production strategies and negates the MRP conflict. However, in the year 2011, a new concept called demand-driven material requirements planning was introduced by Ptak & Smith, which was a fusion of the core MRP, theory of constraints, and Lean principles. Since the introduction DDMRP has seen an increase in implementation across industries which claimed a significant improvement in performance, on-time delivery, reduction in inventory, and reduced stock-outs. DDMRP has received very little attention in academia due to a lack of awareness among researchers and industries. A literature review approach was used to collect and analyze the data on DDMRP and its advantages. The objective of this thesis was to shed light on the process of DDMRP, its pros, and cons in implementing the new material planning system.

Abstract (sommario):
The widespread implementation of Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRPII) systems in this country and abroad and the reported dissatisfaction with their use formed the initial basis of this piece of research which concentrates on the fundamental theory and design of the Closed Loop MRPII system itself. The dissertation concentrates on two key aspects namely; how Master Production Scheduling is carried out in differing business environments and how well the `closing of the loop' operates by checking the capcity requirements of the different levels of plans within an organisation. The main hypothesis which is tested is that in U.K. manufacturing industry, resource checks are either not being carried out satisfactorily or they are not being fed back to the appropriate plan in a timely fashion. The research methodology employed involved initial detailed investigations into Master Scheduling and capacity planning in eight diverse manufacturing companies. This was followed by a nationwide survey of users in 349 companies, a survey of all the major suppliers of Production Management software in the U.K. and an analysis of the facilities offered by current software packages. The main conclusion which is drawn is that the hypothesis is proved in the majority of companies in that only just over 50% of companies are attempting Resource and Capacity Planning and only 20% are successfully feeding back CRP information to `close the loop'. Various causative factors are put forward and remedies are suggested.

Raytheon produces a diverse range of defense products using a wide range of business systems and tools that are not currently integrated. To achieve the corporate vision of "one company", in 2005, Raytheon began to deploy its SAP enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, called "PRISM", focused on planning, sourcing, manufacturing, and delivery processes. After a few single-site PRISM deployments, in 2009, Raytheon launched its biggest deployment yet, to 7,000 users and two business units in California and Texas. This thesis explores effective governance models and post-deployment governance processes necessary to mitigate the anticipated performance dip and accelerate return on investment (ROI) of the SAP system. The desired governance model for multi-business unit SAP ERP system includes comprehensive representation of stakeholders from business functional areas, information technology (IT) areas, user support groups, and SAP system experts. The governance structure consists of integration points among users, system experts, process owners, management, and corporate leadership team to ensure development of corporate system and solutions to address business unit needs. The governance process involves reviewing change requests, assessing changes needed, and deciding on final resolution. The governance structure and its linkages among different groups facilitate the process by involving the stakeholders with the appropriate knowledge and experience to contribute to decision making. The result is a governance structure capable of making just-in-time decisions to implement the "one-company" vision.

Abstract (sommario):
An increase in global competitiveness has forced manufacturing organisations to re – look at their facility from an output and quality standpoint. Leveraging a manufacturing operation into a competitive advantage must at all times support the organisation’s objectives. It is therefore vital that the operation reviews its strategy so that it fulfils the everchanging needs of its market. The main objective of this research was to identify possible approaches that Johnson Controls South Africa (JCI SA) could pursue when implementing a Lean Manufacturing model. In doing this it will improve JCI SA’s manufacturing efficiency and quality, thus giving the organisation a competitive edge over its opposition. The research presented an empirical study of how a Lean Manufacturing model should be implemented in JCI SA. A theoretical and empirical study was conducted on how to successfully implement Lean Manufacturing within an organisation. The main purpose was to establish a theoretical Lean Manufacturing model that the organisation can utilise as a strategic plan to become the global leader in its market place.

Abstract (sommario):
Today’s fast-paced global economy has intensified the demand for manufacturing companies to make their products more quickly and with higher quality to meet heightened consumer expectations while reducing costs. This competitive environment requires small to medium enterprise’s (SMEs) to implement well-designed business processes and leverage information technology (IT), such as an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, within their facilities to become more agile, flexible, and integrated to meet changing market demands. Issues emerge when facility managers lack reliable data on performance and costs, which subsequently impairs even basic decisions for resource allocation or process improvement. Although the benefits of a successful ERP implementation in large firms are recognized, there is a general lack of empirical IT productivity literature focusing on SMEs. This research is expected to contribute to a framework for performance measurement, providing facility decision-makers with important metrics for analyzing their firm’s ability to improve upon competitive priorities. Employing the Delphi process, key performance indicators (KPIs) including time, speed, quality, and cost, and corresponding performance measurement metrics, investigations are conducted between traditional manufacturing processes in SMEs and processes enhanced through ERP adoption. In this longitudinal case study, significant improvements are observed in production operations relative to time following ERP implementation including a reduction in the defect rate, total manufacturing cost, and scrap rate along with increases in on-time delivery and flexibility.

Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) is a planning system used in various industries to manage manufacturing resources. This study explored the suitability of MRP II in controlling the shop floor by analyzing its constraints and limitations. The study is part of a larger effort by MIT's Production System Design Laboratory to establish an information system that meets the functional requirements of a physical (manufacturing) system. A literature survey of different books and papers on MRP II and Shop Floor Control was conducted and supplemented by interviews with individuals who have worked with MRP II systems. The production System Design Decomposition, a diagnostic tool developed by the Production System Design Laboratory was then used to determine what the constraints and limitations facing MRP II on the shop floor were. A case study at company X, a centrifuge manufacturer which uses MRP II in its production process was then used to tie in the issues raised from the literature survey with a real world example. The results of the literature review and the case study both revealed that MRP II was a poor tool for controlling the shop floor and proposed the use of hybrid systems that combined Kanban control with the strong planning capabilities of MRP II.

Abstract (sommario):
Within the last 30 years, Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP-type) computer systems have quickly evolved from basic materials requirement planning software to today's enterprise resource planning (ERP) integrated software packages that reside on client/server computer architecture. However, given the magnitude of influence these computer systems encompass, very little research has been conducted to monitor and improve how companies are actually using these MRP, advanced MRP and ERP computer systems. In practical terms, where is the typical manufacturing organization today in terms of MRP systems development? To what extent is software being applied for use in enterprise integration? A survey study of manufacturing companies in Virginia and Tennessee was conducted to evaluate the current use and performance of computer systems to support manufacturing applications. This study explores the reasons why organizations chose to use these systems, the problems and benefits derived from the MRP/ERP systems, and the characteristics of the types of companies that have benefited from the use of MRP-type systems. The survey participants evaluated the performance of their manufacturing or enterprise planning systems on the basis of data accuracy, customer satisfaction, user satisfaction, systems effectiveness, convenience, information relevance, and software reliability. Furthermore, success factors associated with organizational performance were tested and evaluated. The correlation between perceived performance was tested against the influence of upper management support, the level of emphasis on training, sources of technical expertise, and organizational experience with MRP-type systems.

Abstract (sommario):
The dissertation describes the study on major features achieved from the perspective of cost management within discrete manufacturing industries, especially considering a possible integration between Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems with so-called Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES). This study seeks to enlighten a few initiatives on the subject concerned to cost reduction management belonged to the company, especially those applied among manufacturers whose type is settled as discrete. By using the multiple case study method, several data regarding MES implementation and also its impacts on cost decrease were gathered within three enterprises, and therefore used for debating some standpoints from several managers and verifying whether the assumptions made throughout the article are confirmed. Finally, the results obtained along this study were analyzed and discussed, and such findings lead to idea that MES system use can concur or has the potential to decrease costs and also enhance the management control. However, it was also possible to behold that systems implementation should be followed by a culture and processes changes as well, that surely provide cost cutting among companies. It was proposed some other improvement possibilities in order to make possible the development of new efforts in this regard, in a way that enterprises are able to explore new paths, enhancing the systems or even developing changes in their processes.

Abstract (sommario):
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems provide great benefits to companies. Companies in the Middle East realises that there is an urgent need for understanding ERP adoption and implementation issues since use of ERP systems are still in the early stages in these countries. Also, use of cloud ERP is very limited and there is no much empirical study has been carried out in this field. The purpose of studying this topic is to examine factors that influence the selection and adoption of cloud based ERP in UAE manufacturing companies. A comparative study was carried out in UK and UAE SMEs to evaluate the differences in the perception and application of cloud based ERP. Through empirical study and extensive statistical analysis, the technological and cultural barriers that impede the adaptation and implementation of cloud based ERP successfully in UAE manufacturing companies were recognised. Based on the critical success factors identified in the analysis, a cloud based manufacturing ERP model (CBMERP) with a specific focus on flexibility, scalability, faster deployment, access to advanced technologies and more ease of use was developed. Validation study of CBMERP revealed that UAE SMEs which experimented the proposed model achieved improvement in their manufacturing operations through shorter cycle times, reduced manufacturing costs, improved supply chain management practices and shorter delivery times. This research contributed to the existing body of knowledge by identifying that a significant gap exists in the factors that influence the success of an ERP system in manufacturing SMEs particularly in UAE. This study addressed this gap by providing a conceptual framework of the influential factors involved in the success of a cloud based manufacturing ERP model suited for UAE SMEs.

Abstract (sommario):
The world is changing rapidly for the engineering community. Sustainability in every sense has become the watchword¿in terms of product manufacture and performance, and responding to global market and environmental pressures. A well thought-out manufacturing strategy can help organisations make choices that support its overall business objectives, respond to new opportunities and challenges as they arise. However, manufacturing strategy configuration and deployment in SMME¿s is a neglected field in manufacturing strategy literatures. More importantly, the application of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and CIM strategies are said to be more applicable to batch production environments and large manufacturing organisations but not to SMMEs that operates a job shop type operating characteristics and with limited resource availability. With recognition that most of these methodologies were originally conceptualised and implemented in large manufacturing environments with batch and flow type manufacturing architecture, the need to develop solutions specific to SMME¿s with job shop type operating characteristics (tooling reclamation industry in particular) is imperative. The fundamental essence of this research is the development of an integrated manufacturing strategy which is based on Lean-Six Sigma-MRP-CADCAM methodologies at the case company. The framework for deploying this strategy is based on inputs from a business environment analysis, a lean strategic planning module (based on production planning and manufacturing/product cost structure analysis) and a lean resource planning interface that is predicated on value stream analysis and simulation models. The material and information flows of the case company manufacturing systems were studied. The approach taken emphasis the well know value engineering concepts of multiple-stage manufacturing system accumulating costs/time between individual stages as well as by transfer/material handling and work-in-process. The study shows that maximisation of capacity and resource utilisation, queue less work flow and flexible labour policies that support the case company¿s manufacturing system offer potential for reform which can substantially enhance customer service, product quality and overall improvement in investment returns.

Abstract (sommario):
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) have grown steadily in recent years.  SMEs generate 59.7 % of value-added and 65.5 % of employment in the ‘non-financial business economy’ in Sweden. It's important for the success of SMEs to be ready to provide high product availability to customers at minimal operation costs. The challenges faced by SMEs are tougher in global competition. There is a rapid growth in the industrial revolution to deal with the challenges as well as competition. This work mainly focuses on implementing resource planning (RP) and adapting to the latest technologies of Industry 4.0 into SMEs to face the challenges. But incorporating Industry 4.0 in a major struggle in the SMEs.  The thesis provides a view of Resource Planning implementation. The authors describe the resource planning implementation techniques and define the requirements for its successful implementation. Resource Planning (RP) adoption factors have been studied quite extensively over the years. However, this master thesis tries to investigate the less explored area of resource planning. Relatively a smaller amount of research has been conducted, when it comes to implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies especially in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).  Industry 4.0 provides new paradigms for the industrial management of SMEs. Supported by a growing number of new technologies, this concept appears more flexible and less expensive than traditional enterprise information systems. This paper presents a literature review of existing applied research covering different Industry 4.0 issues about SMEs. Furthermore, the analysis is done to understand the correlation between the identified factors of Industry 4.0 technologies. The research findings indicate that the use of IoT and Cloud computing are major advantages for resource planning in an SME. The results from the analysis are presented in a framework designed for the future adaptation of these technologies. Despite the research limitations, the findings show a high advantage. Finally, the author suggests a future scope of research.

Abstract (sommario):
There is a growing need for understanding business process re-engineering within SMEs such as the service management companies and this calls for more research focusing on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and implementation. The aim of this study is to highlight the impact of an in-depth business process analysis during the pre-adoption and implementation of an ERP system in a hybrid service and manufacturing Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME). Service management SMEs are identified as lacking in research focus especially in service operations, and in hybrid organisations that combine manufacturing and service provision. The study extends the existing knowledge in business process analysis and ERP adoption research by drawing upon the interpretive action case and Organisational Information Processing Theory (OIPT). The emphasis is on the impact of appropriate business process analysis during the pre-adoption decision making of an ERP system in a hybrid service and manufacturing SME. Primary data was collected using an online survey with 72 customer responses, questionnaires for in-company observations and third party meetings conducted at an SME in the North West of England, UK. OIPT specifically states that organisations are structured around information and the flow of information in order to minimise uncertainties. The theory suggests the use of information processing needs and information processing capabilities of an organisation to find an optimal performance. The theory however made no suggestion of how to find this optimal performance. Customising OIPT as the theoretical framework, the current study identified two variables a) information processing needs and b) information processing capability of the case organisation and used Value Stream Mapping (VSM) to analyse both variables in order to obtain an optimal fit during IS/IT pre-adoption decision making. The current study takes an original approach by combining and customising OIPT with VSM to the needs of the current study. It also highlights existing wastes in the business process and areas of improvement are suggested while mapping the information processing needs and information processing capabilities of the organisation. The study used action case methodology to provide a rich insight into business process analysis and ERP pre-adoption in a hybrid service and manufacturing SME. The current study was conducted over a period of two years from January 2010 to December 2011. The author was fully immersed into the study as both a participant and a researcher. The action case provided an environment where information processing needs and information processing capabilities as well as the application of VSM could be studied while analysing the resultant implications. Using action case, the current study was able to focus on pre-adoption decision making and monitored the initial impact of action on the case. The key finding is that OIPT and VSM are compatible and offer an opportunity of closing the weaknesses of not being able to identify the optimal fit when using OIPT alone during business process analysis. The contributions to knowledge are: i) Modification of OIPT in the form of OIPT2.0 to reproduce the current state as well as develop the future state value stream to suggest the optimal fit between the information needs and capability of an organisation. ii) Emphasis on extensive scoping during an IS/IT pre-adoption process aids the identification and adoption of an ERP system which best fits the business process and also suggests areas of the business process which could benefit from improvement. iii) The study also creates more awareness of action case methodology by demonstrating how it provides a rich insight into the process of ERP pre-adoption decision making in a hybrid SME. iv) Recommendation is made to the definition of hybrid service and manufacturing SME.

Abstract: This study aims to observe and analyze the maintenance management profiles found in organizations. On the other hand, it verifies which components of the maintenance processes flow are impacted by technological innovation, business strategy and manufacturing. To achieve this goal, a methodology was proposed to explore three dimensions S1, S2 and S3, with eight variables divided into five attributes A1, B2, C3, D4 and E5, used to reference the positioning of organizations regarding the maintenance management process control. The proposal was applied to three companies through interviews and questionnaires. One of them works in the services sector, another in the transport sector, and the third one in manufacturing. The data entrusted to the author are not public domain. After analyzing the collected data and simulation, it was noticed that the skills generated by the maintenance management process control. formed a basis for making decisions about strategic positioning, manufacturing, and businesses. The research's outcome indicates that maintenance managers demonstrated some difficulties in drawing up an action plan for maintenance, especially because of their distance from operational problems. It was observed that changes in control processes of maintenance management are targeted to the costs adaptation, while development of new maintenance procedures do not have a structured process, limited just to the maintainers' skill.

Abstract: The research proposes to develop an interpretive case study that focuses predominantly on the needs and possibilities of contemporary product design, inserted in the context of a possible sustainable society that positions itself beyond the current material culture based on consumerism. In this way, we take into account the interrelationship of the trinomial art-design-spirituality in parallel with the phenomenon, in a broad sense, of globalization. As a case study, the analysis of the research corpus focuses on the design work (theoreticalpractical) of Professor Stuart Walker, PhD, currently of the University of Lancaster, UK. The primary focus of walkerian design is the "re-signification" of everyday functional objects through formal (tangible) propositions ranging from incremental approaches of "unmasking" and reusing materials to complex philosophical conceptualizations. Using a radical methodology that distances itself from academia and economics in favour of a cyclical creative process (thinking-and-doing), it focuses on the association between ethics, aesthetics, sustainability and spirituality, from the rescue and symbolic appropriation of elements derived from religious traditions of millennia. With this reference, we seek to contribute not only to ecological perception/awareness, but also mainly to a new product design, in which the aesthetic function is harmoniously inter-related to the practical function and the symbolic function, in order to focus and favour a "S... Abstract (sommario):
Logistics and Information System Development are hot topics in today’s business world. Although many studies have been conducted on these two areas, information about logistics costs is still lacking in many companies. Information Systems are tools that, if properly developed, aid organizations in processing data and providing information with speed, accuracy and quality to its intended users. A lacking in the relation between the business world and the Information System’s world was apparent in a studied company’s self-developed Enterprise Resource Planning system, where information about logistics costs was neglected. A case study made in this same studied company, show the importance of seven different logistics costs types and its related information. Using the analysis of the material gathered from both literary work and this case study, it was determined what information about logistics costs is neglected by the manufacturing organization’s self-developed ERP-system. Finally, it was concluded what information on these logistics costs that should be considered by manufacturing organizations for facilitating the understanding of total product cost of specific products and which may not be supported by these systems.

Abstract (sommario):
The research described in this thesis is aimed to improve our knowledge of barriers to the use of OR (Operations Research) techniques in the manufacturing sector. Numerous issues have been previously identified, but the work has generally been unsystematic, or focused on the OR profession. This research is empirical, systematic, and compares a group of OR professionals to a group of manufacturing managers. The technology selected for analysis was DES (Discrete event simulation, a computer based technique for modeling complex manufacturing processes), and the companies chosen, as the focus for data collection, were based in Australia. Two major implications for practice are identified in the thesis. These two perspectives should be seen to be complementary, rather than opposing. OR professionals should place their knowledge within the mindset used by manufacturing managers, rather than attempting to displace that mindset.

Abstract (sommario):
A review of the normative literature, in the field of Information Technology (IT)/ Information System (IS) justification, examines how organisations evaluate their investments in Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRPII). This is achieved through investigating the issues surrounding capital budgeting, with a particular focus on investment appraisal. In doing so, a novel taxonomy of generic appraisal techniques is proposed. This taxonomy identifies a number of methods for appraising MRPII investments, and through describing these techniques, a classification is offered that identifies their respective characteristics and limitations. In doing so, it becomes clear that although many of the benefits and savings resulting from MRPII are suitable for inclusion within traditional accountancy frameworks, it is their intangible and non-financial nature, together with a range of indirect project costs that confuse the justification process. These factors, together with a range of human and organisational implications, that further complicate the decision making process are also identified. Hence, it appears through a critical review of the literature that many companies are unable to assess the implications of their MRPII investments, thus amounting to a myopic appraisal process that focuses on the analysis of those benefits and costs that are financially quantifiable. In acknowledging the limitations of traditional appraisal techniques, a conceptual model for IT/IS investment evaluation is proposed, which is underpinned by research hypotheses. To test the validity of the proposed hypotheses, a robust novel research methodology is then developed. In doing so, an interpretivist stance is adopted, which favours the use of qualitative research methods during a multiple case enquiry. Whilst conducting the empirical research, it soon emerged that the hypotheses represented significant factors for consideration within the presented model. As a result, such constructs now establish themselves as integral parts within a structured evaluation process. However, during the empirical research, complementary evaluation criteria also emerged, which resulted in modifications being made to the previously presented conceptual model. In doing so, culminating in the development of descriptive MRPII evaluation criteria and a model, which provides investment decision makers with novel frames of reference during the evaluation of MRPII investment proposals.

This study proposes a production model that increases the manufacturing capacity in a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) of garments with an aim to reduce the nonfulfillment of order deliveries. An assessment has been done and waiting times between production processes have been identified, along with defective products and inefficient work methods. This study proposes the design of a lean manufacturing model under the change management approach, whose methodology comprises five phases. In phase 0, awareness and training sessions are conducted (change management). Then, phase 1 reorganizes the work area (plant layout re-distribution and 5S) and phase 2 seeks better workload balances (line balance and Heijunka implementation). Later, phase 3 standardizes work methods (standardization). Finally, the proposed model will be validated to determine whether the selected operating tools are supported by the awareness that contributes to increasing production. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Abstract (sommario):
Smartphones and other mobile devices are a common sight in our daily lives. The improvement in technology has given us small and portable devices that have the performance only found in desktop computers and more high-end devices less than a decade ago. An industry that has been quick to adopt technologies in the past is the manufacturing industry, examples of these adoptions are the conveyor belt and robots, which both are innovations of their time. Aside from hardware technologies, there are software technologies that the manufacturing industry has been using, e.g. complex information systems to manage materials and resources in the production. With the developments in mobile technology, a question arises whether the information systems can be combined with it in the manufacturing companies. One of the technologies that has become popular in the past years is the use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. These kinds of devices can improve communication and flexibility. This leads us to the purpose of identifying how the use of ERP-connected mobile and mobility-supporting devices can affect processes among shop floor and production management personnel in large manufacturing companies. Using a qualitative approach, case studies of eleven companies were conducted using semi-structured interviews and direct observations. Personnel with different roles were interviewed to identify applications and devices that would reduce execution time, improve quality, or improve the flexibility of processes and tasks. These eleven companies were analysed with a model that focus on the dimensions complexity, specificity, and dynamism of a company's production structure, as well as a model that focus on the same dimensions in the roles of production personnel. The result was six applications and corresponding devices that could improve the effectiveness and efficiency of a process in a significant way. The analysis showed that the management in companies had similar needs in mobile or mobility-supporting devices. Similarly, the assemblers and machine operators also had similar needs. No connection was found between the production strategy and the need for mobile or mobility-supporting devices.

Abstract (sommario):

The Small and Medium-size Enterprises are the key bone of the economy of many nations. The usual definition of SME’s, make up 99.8% of the approximately 19 million enterprises of the European Union (ISO, 2002) and Sweden is not an exception. That is why SME’s faces the strategic challenge of achieving sustained profitable growth. To meet this challenge, SME’s must develop capabilities to integrate their systems. Since ICT gives so many advantages to support the Supply Chain, and MRPII software’s have become a very popular tool in the last thirty years; Our purpose is to answer the following research question:

How can MRP II-type computer systems be used effectively to support the manufacturing and organizational integration?

The research started with on-site observations and interviews but the development of a model and a survey was needed. After, we linked the research with an already accepted model. The results show how important the human aspect and the accuracy are in the effective usage of an MRP II. It also demonstrates that the MRP II philosophy must be accepted to use the MRP II software profitably. Nevertheless, we modeled the vicious cycle that our case company might deal with, tried to find the root cause and give recommendations to break it.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis concerns the human resource planning by paying a special attention to the human aspect and ergonomic factors in the manufacturing domain. A number of mathematical models are presented to formulate the studied workforce scheduling and planning problems. In the planning models, the productivity of the manufacturing system and the well-being of the workers are targeted. In this way, a worker assignment approach is presented to reduce the production time and a job rotation scheduling approach is presented to balance the workloads on the operators. For this purpose, an ergonomic analysis is carried out on the jobs of the studied production system. This analysis results in the traffic light evaluation for the jobs, i.e., the jobs are categorized into the low, medium and high workload levels which are presented respectively by the green, yellow and red colors. A mathematical approach is developed to convert these outputs to the numerical values, because the quantitative parameters are more applicable for the optimization of the planning. A multi-objective programming is proposed to optimize two mentioned objectives of the studied workforce scheduling problem. Both linear aggregation and epsilon-constraint methods are applied to solve this optimization model. Furthermore, this thesis presents a novel variant of the assignment problem called sequencing generalized assignment problem which is defined for workforce scheduling in a combined system consisting of the jobs in series and in parallel. It is proved that this combinatorial optimization problem is NP-hard and the exact methods are not able to solve the large-scale instances. Hence, three approximate methods consisting of two matheuristic and a hybrid heuristic approaches are developed to solve it. The matheuristic methods are based on the decomposition of the formulation to break down and simplify the main model into two or more smaller models. The third method is a greedy heuristic combined with a local search. The efficiency of the three mentioned methods is evaluated by various instances of different sizes. Moreover, in the last step of this thesis, the human resource planning for a home healthcare system is formulated mathematically. According to the structure of the system, an integration of the worker assignment and vehicle routing problems is presented. Finally, a three-steps matheuristic approach is proposed to solve this combinatorial optimization problem
