Abstract (sommario):
This article experimentally examines methods for implementing the philosophies of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) in a High-Mix Low-Volume (HMLV) manufacturing environment. HMLV environments present unique challenges to LSS paradigms because of the need for extraordinary operational flexibility and customer responsiveness. The subject HMLV manufacturer for this experimentation manufactures (among 8500 others) an example component for which 3 machines work independently to perform the necessary operations to manufacture this component. The experiment that is the subject of this research seeks to adapt LSS philosophies to develop treatments to improve the performance of the manufacturing of this component. These LSS-inspired treatments included 1) using cellular manufacturing methods, and the 3 machines as a single work cell to manufacture the component, and 2) using a single multipurpose machine to perform all operations required to manufacture the component. The results of this experiment demonstrate that the cellular manufacturing method was the most effective to reduce costs, to standardize operations at a process level, and to increase throughput. The single machine processing method improved production rates and on-time delivery relative to the baseline, but greatly increased lead time, thereby increasing total cost per part. These results highlight the importance of critically assessing the application of LSS within HMLV environments compared to the Low-Mix High-Volume (LMHV) environments where LSS is traditionally successful. HMLV manufacturers and researchers can use these findings to identify the most effective methods for their specific needs and to design interventions that will improve system-level manufacturing performance in high mix environments.

Abstract (sommario):
Near net shape (NNS) manufacturing offers an alternative to conventional processes for the manufacture of titanium alloy components. Compared to the conventional routes, which typically require extensive material removal of forged billets, NNS methods offer more efficient material usage and can significantly reduce machining requirements. Furthermore, NNS manufacturing processes offer benefits such as greater flexibility and reduced costs compared to conventional methods. Processes such as metal additive manufacturing (AM) have started to be adopted in niche applications, most notably for the manufacture of medical implants, where many conventionally forged components have been replaced by those manufactured by AM processes. However, for more widespread adoption of these emerging processes, an improvement in the confidence in the techniques by manufacturers is necessary. This requires addressing challenges such as the limited mechanical properties of parts in their as-built condition compared to wrought products and the post-process machining requirements of components manufactured by these routes. In this review, processes which use a powder or wire feedstock are evaluated to assess their capabilities for the manufacture of titanium alloy components. These processes include powder bed fusion and direct energy deposition metal additive processes as well as hybrid routes, which combine powder metallurgy with thermomechanical post-processing.

Abstract (sommario):
This study compares samples of matched plants in Britain and Germany engaged in the manufacture of women's outerwear; it follows earlier matched plant studies, also published in the National Institute Economic Review, which examined matched plants in metalworking and furniture manufacture in these two countries. German clothing manufacturers specialise in high-fashion items produced in great variety of which a high proportion is exported at high unit prices; the typical British manufacturer concentrates on more standardised items produced in long runs and is consequently more vulnerable to competition from lower-cost producers in developing countries. The study examines the contribution of machinery, new technology and skills to differ ences in clothing productivity in the two countries. A final section discusses future trends in the industry in the light of the 1992 proposals for a Single European Market.

Abstract (sommario):
In a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC), the right alliance can help manufacturers better manufacture green products and make more profits. Choosing the most suitable alliance partner is also critical for manufacturers. In regard to product greenness and recycling competition, this paper considers the CLSC comprised of a dominant manufacturer, a retailer, and a third-party recycler. Based on the Stackelberg game and equilibrium analysis, we discuss the optimal supply chain decision-making under four different models. Then, in order to ensure supply chain (SC) members’ enthusiasm to participate in the alliance, we design a profit distribution method to distribute the total profit to SC members. The results show that manufacturer’s optimal alliance decision is related to the degree of recycling competition. When less than the threshold, C alliance(the manufacturer make an alliance with the retailer and the third-party recycler at the same time) is optimal, otherwise, MR alliance(the manufacturer and the retailer make an alliance ) is more beneficial for the manufacturer.

Abstract (sommario):
The article reports on the new technology and equipment of vertical‑stack molding (VSM), created by OJSC “BELNIILIT” for the manufacture of vertical‑stack molds. The development is intended for the production of molds and cast blanks of oil, which are later used for the manufacture of piston rings of internal combustion engines. The difference between the above‑mentioned technology and traditional methods of VSM is the use of models without drafts. The development is export‑oriented and has a great economic effect for ring manufacturers due to the absence of drafts on castings, since part of the mechanical operations for their processing is excluded, the metal consumption of blanks is reduced, the production spaces required in this regard are reduced, the necessary labor supply is reduced, etc.OJSC “BELNIILIT” has successfully carried out experimental design and technological work on the new scientific and technical products creation, which are of great interest to the world manufacturers of piston rings. An industrial sample of a molding machine and a mold manipulator were manufactured.

Abstract (sommario):
Manufacturing companies are turning increasingly to rapid prototyping (RP) to perform pre-assembly testing and improve the quality of the final product. Manufacturers also have begun to complement their RP practices using design for manufacture and assembly methodology. Design for assembly lowers the complexity of products through parts reduction and enables manufacturers to quantify assembly times and costs. Users are prompted to consider each part and decide if it must be separate from others in the assembly, leading to systematic simplification of design. The four approaches by which design for manufacturer (DFMA) software analyzes product configurations incorporate design for assembly, design for manufacture, design for service, and design for environment. Using design for assembly can reduce the number of parts in the product, but can increase the complexity of the parts that remain. Rapid prototyping combined with DFMA tools not only can determine if a product will perform its desired functions. According to an expert, when early manufacturing process planning is performed using DFMA and RP, it is synergistic.

Abstract (sommario):
Globally, own store brands or private labels are rapidly gaining share at the cost of manufacture brands. In India, where the share of organised retail is minuscule, manufacture brands still dominate. With the retail sector poised for growth, national brand manufacturers will have to contend with competition within distribution channel, which calls for revised marketing strategy locally, to thwart the threat of the private label in a store. The phenomenon also offers national brand manufacturers the opportunity to service the production needs of the private labels efficiently. The problem is India's internet-savvy consumers aren't as convinced about Private labels as their global counterparts. Consumers may be happy with the quality of private label when it comes to kitchen towels and staples like wheat flour but are wary when it comes to buying a store version of, say, baby food or shampoo. The paper has also discussed the different types branding strategies used by retailers in the developing countries. The manufacturer brands have an advantage relative to own brand where symbolic association and/or product innovation are important to customers. Conversely, where symbolic associations and product innovations are less important there is an opportunity for retailers to compete successfully with manufacturer brands if they can demonstrate comparable product quality and provide value or money. This paper deals with the power of private label in modern retail market.

Abstract (sommario):
Metallic materials most suitable for the manufacture of polyaxial transpedicular screws have been analyzed. Choosing titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V for their manufacture has been justified. When developing the screw design, the requirements for these medical products have been considered. The screws were manufactured on high-performance equipment. During the manufacture, the optimal tool material and cutting part geometry have been chosen. The surface was superfinished and anodic oxide coated. Modern measuring equipment was used to control the product quality and geometric parameters. The manufactured polyaxial transpedicular screw prototypes are not inferior in quality to their foreign analogs. The manufacturing technology proposed allows minimizing the labor intensity of production and 3-6 times reducing the cost of finished products.

Abstract (sommario):
This article discusses formerly America’s top low-cost manufacturer; the neighbor to the south is repositioning itself to be an advanced industrial player. Colantuoni manages market research for Mexico’s Offshore Group, which develops maquiladoras for firms that want to manufacture in Mexico. Maquiladoras import goods from the United States without paying taxes or tariffs, manufacture or assemble them into products, and export them back across the border. Today, Mexico is making more complex and sophisticated products, as well as goods that require fast turnarounds and customization. It has used its advantages to retain business even in industries—computers, telecommunications, and appliances—that seemed a natural fit for China. Management in general is also a consideration for manufacturers. Mexico’s physical proximity to the Unites States and Canada, and the shared business culture of North America make management easier. In many ways, competition from China has been good for Mexico. It has spurred it to move into engineering and manufacturing higher value-added products.

Dumene, Richard Lawrence. "Manufacture and Characterization of Additively Manufactured Ceramic Electromagnetic Structures". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/83484.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Additive Manufacturing (AM, also known as 3D printing) can produce novel three-dimensional structures using low-loss dielectric materials. This enables the construction of dielectrics with complex shapes that enable innovative microwave applications such as resonators, filters, and metamaterial lenses. This thesis addresses the production and characterization of cellular structures of various designed densities created with a low loss ceramic material, alumina (aluminum oxide), via vat photopolymerization. The permittivity of these printed structures is variable over roughly an octave, with a range of relative permittivites from 1.78 to 3.60, controlled via part geometry. Two additional materials, ferrite and nickel, have been explored for inclusion within these dielectric structures to enable the production of multi-material electromagnetic structures with conductive, magnetic, and dielectric elements.

Normand, Marie-Astrid. "La manufacture d'orgues Krischer". Thesis, Paris 4, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA040070.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In the XIXth century, the French organ building expanded. Small manufactures, like the Krischer manufacture in Rouen, flourished in spite of the influence of larger manufactures. Regarded as the most renowned organ builder, Aristide Cavaillé-Coll built almost all the French large instruments at that time. The organ building belongs to those trades for which knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation, as it was the case for the Isnard or the Cavaillé-Coll builders. It was the same for the Krischer family: since Henry-Jean Krischer up to his great-grandchildren, we can pick out at least seven people who practised this trade. Jean-Hubert Krischer, who was the son of a family native to Nideggen near Aix-la-Chapelle, was an organ builder in Paris and was the father of two organ builders, Marie-Joseph, and Hubert François. The latter had more particularly worked in the Parisian workshops of the Merklin, Cavaillé-Coll and Martin manufactures, before creating his own manufacture in Rouen in 1873, where his descendants (Georges, Henry, Ernest and Paul) would learn the job. In this thesis, several points will be approached to define the aesthetics of the Krischer instruments: after having introduced the whole family of these organ builders, we will be interested in the expansion of this organ manufacture in France, by studying its activities from 1860 to approximately 1934. We will also describe all the instruments, by noting their characteristics of the Krischer instruments. Finally, after the disappearance of the Krischer manufacture, we will continue the study of the history of their organs until now, by showing how they did survive or not in History

Tomlinson, Richard J. "Lens design for manufacture". Thesis, Loughborough University, 2005. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/14554.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The manufacture of complete optical systems can be broken down into three distinct stages; the optical and mechanical design, the production of both optical and mechanical components and finally their assembly and test. The three stages must not be taken in isolation if the system is to fulfil its required optical performance at reasonable cost. This report looks first at the optical design phase. There are a number of different optical design computer packages on the market that optimise an optical system for optical performance. These packages can be used to generate the maximum manufacturing errors, or tolerances, which are permissible if the system is to meets its design requirement. There is obviously a close relationship between the manufacturing tolerances and the cost of the system, and an analysis of this relationship is presented in this report. There is also an attempt made to optimise the design of a simple optical system for cost along with optical performance. Once the design is complete the production phase begins and this report then examines the current techniques employed in the manufacture, and testing of optical components. There are numerous methods available to measure the surface form generated on optical elements ranging from simple test plates through to complex interferometers. The majority of these methods require the element to be removed from the manufacturing environment and are therefore not in-process techniques that would be the most desirable. The difficulties surrounding the measurement of aspheric surfaces are also discussed. Another common theme for the non-contact test techniques is the requirement to have a test or null plate which can either limit the range of surfaces the designer may chose from or increase the cost of the optical system as the test surface will first have to be manufactured. The development of the synthetic aperture interferometer is presented in this report. This technique provides a non-contact method of surface form measurement of aspheric surfaces without needing null or test plates. The final area to be addressed is the assembly and test stage. The current assembly methods are presented, with the most common industry standard method being to fully assemble the optical system prior to examining its performance. Also, a number of active alignment techniques are discussed including whether the alignment of the individual optical elements is checked, and if need be adjusted, during the assembly phase. In general these techniques rely upon the accuracy of manufacture of the mechanical components to facilitate the optical alignment of the system. Finally a computer aided optical alignment technique is presented which allows the optical alignment of the system to be brought within tolerance prior to the cementing in place of an outer casing. This method circumvents the need for very tight manufacturing tolerances on the mechanical components and also removes the otherwise labour intensive task of assembling and disassembling an optical system until the required level of performance is achieved.

Gerber, Guillaume. "Designing for rapid manufacture". Thesis, [Bloemfontein?] : Central University of Technology, Free State, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/11462/42.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (M. Tech.) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2008
As the tendency to use sol id freeform fabrication (SFF) technology for the manufacture of end use parts grew, so too did the need for a set of general guidelines that would aid designers with designs aimed specifically for rapid manufacture. Unfortunately, the revolutionary additive nature of SFF technology left certain fundamental principles of conventional design for manufacture and assembly outdated. This implied that whole chapters of theoretical work that had previously been done in this field had to be revised before it could be applied to rapid manufacturing. Furthermore, this additive nature of SFF technology seeded a series of new possibilities and new advantages that could be exploited in the manufacturing domain, and as a result drove design for rapid manufacturing principles even further apart from conventional design for manufacture and assembly philosophy. In this study the impact that rapid manufacture had on the conventional product development process and conventional design for manufacture and assembly guidelines were investigated. This investigation brought to light the inherent strengths and weaknesses of SFF, as well as the design for manufacture and assembly guidelines that became invalid, and consequently lead directly to the characterization of a set of design for rapid manufacture guidelines.

Fozzard, Gary James Walter. "Simulation of clothing manufacture". Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 1989. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.329525.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There is considerable pressure on the U.K. clothing industry to remain competitive in the face of foreign competition. Market forces and the trend of decreasing contract sizes have produced perceived problems with current methods of production which, coupled with the inertia to radical change, justify research. Computer simulation is an established production management tool but its potential in clothing manufacture could not be inferred. Concentrating on progressive bundle systems as the dominant method of production, this research considers the capacity of simulation in this context. Factory-based studies identified factors affecting system performance which allowed a conceptual model with high face validity to be defined. The requirement to handle complex supervisory control strategies led to the identification of visual interactive simulation as an experimental route. A computerised model, with an appropriate user interface and reporting facilities, was developed in the ~Siman si@ulat~£~~Dguage __ This was supported by animated graphics which played a substantial role in the attainment of face validity. Replication was considered to be essential for sound estimates of system performance to be obtained from this stochastic model but, as interactive control works against replication, steps were taken to reduce compromise. Software development facilitated an experimental technique that employed interaction to develop a control strategy, which then became embedded in the model for replication. By providing control consistency between replications, a more reliable assessment of system sensitivity to stochastic variability was possible. Pilot runs and single factor analysis enabled the effect of controllable factors on system performance to be quantified. Supervisory control was found to have a major effect on system performance so that the need for consistency in interaction was amplified. Considering alternative experimental methods and the practical use of the model, application areas for simulation in the absence of real time data capture were identified and demonstrated. Each application offered significant advantage over currently available planning methods and the use of simulation was supported. Information from the model can be gained about the design and control of progressive bundle lines at the pre-production phase, and the output of performance indicators can be useful in assessing real production lines. The evidence presented by this research illustrates that animated simulation can provide insight that is otherwise unobtainable.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Forming is a high-risk operation as the deformation of precursors, such as preforms or prepregs, is difficult to control. Aiming at de-risking manufacturing and improving processing logistics, a new forming concept is presented involving pre-structuring, i.e. producing fully cured flat structure with integrated formable hinge regions, and assembly, where the part is given the targeted shape using localised forming in the hinge regions. Such a technique becomes feasible if (a) the hinges are produced with the aid of covalent adaptive networks (CANs, cross-linked polymers that can flow when heated above a certain temperature), (b) the excess fibre length (that can occur in the process of forming) is incorporated at the pre-structuring stage. Hence, we pursue an idea of multi-matrix continuously-reinforced composites (MMCRC) with embedded fibre path features, where the main body of composites structure is produced with a conventional epoxy matrix and the hinged areas are produced with reformable CANs. The current paper explores the potential and limitations of this technology in manufacturing trials. It is demonstrated that the presented concept can yield high quality solutions. It is highlighted that an improved manufacturing procedure using specially designed and portable machinery would enable application of the MMCRC technology in the field, facilitating repair and efficient transportation.

Abstract (sommario):
Mechanical micro machining is an emerging technology with many potential benefits and equally great challenges. The push to develop processes and tools capable of micro scale fabrication is a result of the widespread drive to reduce part and feature size. One important factor that contributes to the ability to machine at the microscale level is the overall size of the machine tool due to the effects of thermal, static, and dynamic stabilities. This paper explores the technical feasibility of miniaturized machine tools capable of fabricating features and parts on the micro scale in terms of depth of cut and part form accuracy. It develops a machine tool and examines its capabilities through benchmarking tests and the making of precision dies for the injection molding of microcantilever parts. The design and configuration of a miniaturized vertical machining center of overall dimension less than 300 mm on a side is presented and the component specifications discussed. The six axis machine has linear positioning resolution of 4 nm by 10 nm by 10 nm, with accuracy on the order of 0.3 μm, in the height, feed, and cross feed directions. The work volume as defined by the ranges of axes travel are 4 mm by 25 mm by 25 mm in the height, feed, and cross feed and 20 degrees in the rotational space. To quantify the performance capability of the miniaturized machine tool as a system, a series of evaluation tests were implemented based on linear and arch trajectories over a range of feed speed and depth of cut conditions. Test results suggest that micro level form accuracy and sub-micron level finish are generally achievable for parts with moderate curvature and gradient in the geometry under selected machining parameters and conditions. An injection mold was made of steel with this machine and plastic microcantilevers fabricated. Plastic microcantilevers are appropriate for sensing applications such as surface probe microscopy. The microcantilevers, made from polystyrene, were 464 to 755 μm long, 130 μm wide and only 6–9 μm thick. They showed very good uniformity, reproducibility, and appropriate mechanical response for use as sensors in surface force microscopy.
