Abstract (sommario):
This quasi-experimental study was to make a comparison between the level of self-perception prior to and following a training process. The study attested the view that the action learning based program in question was an effective mechanism for change in self-perception. The population studied were officers of the Australian Public Service and the Commonwealth Teaching Service located in the Australian Taxation Office, Austrade, ACT Schools Authority and the Department of Community Services and Health. A pilot study conducted in the Public Service Board in 1987 suggested that an action learning training process may be impacting on management competencies. Respondent's attitudes to nine personality variables were measured using the Saville Holdsworth Occupational (OPQ) Concept 5 Questionnaire. The variables were Assertive, Gregarious, Empathy, Field of Use, Abstract, Structure, Anxieties, Controls and Energies. Using the Solomon's Four quasi-experimental design, containing three experimental and two control groups, pre-test, change and post-test scores were compared using a one-way Analysis of Variance. Where pre-tests were statistically significantly different an Analysis of Covariance was used, The general conclusion from the study was that the experimental groups showed an overall insignificant relationship with training particularly as control groups showed similar differences over time. Apart from few exceptions the results did not support any strong notion of positive change in self-perception as a result of a training intervention.

Bukszar, Edward William Jr. "Strategic management and the perception of order". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184963.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Retrospective sense-making produces a perception of a world more orderly than it is. In retrospect we recall the actual outcome of a situation as more predictable than it really seemed in prospect. Thus, we see outcomes as unsurprising, as relatively predictable before hand. A key question, and the one which is the central focus of this paper, is, what effect does this inflated perception of order have on strategic management? Three studies presented here suggest that: (1) Knowing eventual outcomes often distorts later reevaluations of initial decisions. Advanced strategy students analyzing a complex business case were unable to ignore information concerning the outcome of decisions made in the case and systematically distorted their evaluations of initial decisions and projections for the future. (2) Access to environmental history and comparative feedback may impede performance by leading decision makers to expect the future to be more predictable than it is. These factors led to persistent poor performance in a dynamic resource allocation task. (3) Remedial efforts aimed at correcting the bias should focus on cognitive factors to a greater degree than motivational factors. Large and equal hindsight shifts were produced in two groups of students by presenting outcomes as either "real" or as the result of a coin flip, which appears to weaken a self-flattery explanation of hindsight shift and give support to a cognitive account. Research and practical implications are suggested.

Abstract (sommario):
The current research studied the relationship between risk management by the institutions underlying the Colombian coffee sector and risk perceptions held by Colombian coffee growers from a neo-institutional approach, in order to explain the risk perceptions and individual behaviors of coffee growers and establishing the effect of institutions on risk perception and management of Colombian coffee growers. The research was performed through an explanatory study with a sequential mixed approach, formed by two phases: (a) a qualitative phase characterized by elaboration of taxonomies on the risks Colombian coffee growers are vulnerable to, and on risk management instruments offered by institutions, creating a coffee grower’s profile, sociodemographic features and exploitation scale; and (b) a quantitative stage that developed a Structural Equation Model (SEM), through which the existing relationship between risk management offered by Colombian coffee sector institutions and risk perceptions of Colombian coffee growers was empirically evaluated, by studying risk perceptions from past experiences and the way coffee growers deal with the risk associated to situations they must face, risk attitudes and management strategies. The study concluded that the set of risk management instruments offered by the institutions underlying the coffee sector lower risk exposure of Colombian coffee growers, and also determine their risk management strategies. In addition, the current study showed that adjusting the extended model proposed by Sitkin and Pablo (1992) showed its capacity to capture the relationships observed in the context of the Colombian coffee grower. Finally, the institutions underlying the coffee sectors affect risk perceptions of opportunity or threat situations faced by coffee growers; it is also validated through the existing relationship between the constructs.

Roberts, Dominic. "Exploring risk perception and management in UK banks". Thesis, University of Essex, 2015. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/15525/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The concept of risk has been interpreted, defined and researched overtime in many different ways. This research uses semi-structured interviews to explore the perception of risk through the views of UK bank managers. Although different risks are identified and discussed in this thesis, the main risk that these interviews are concerned with is credit risk. It builds on previous work from Mikes (2009, 2011) and Wahlstrom (2009) and uses structuration theory to understand how human beings interact with social systems to produce organizational outcomes. Twenty five (25) interviews were conducted among banking managers and executives over a period of close to two years. There were five (5) banks that participated in this research but the largest two banks (Glass bank and Penny bank) were analysed and presented separately because of the significant differences in their approaches to risk management despite their similarities in size and international operations. The other three (3) banks were much smaller in operations with no global operations and not much overall differences in their approach to risk management. The research finds three distinct approaches to risk management, based on perception. The first approach is based on a perception of risk as a measureable and quantitative construct. Managers and risk executives from Glass bank are strong believers of this risk philosophy and hence, the social subject (agent) is consciously separated from the object (the system) and the rule and procedures are viewed as being separate and distinct from the agents that implement and reproduce them. This approach mirrors what Layder (1987) refers to as “structural dualism” where the subject and the object are independent of each other but work together to produce organizational outcome. The emphasis in this approach is on the structure. The second approach to risk is situated in the belief that risk should be explored as a social variable, where the emphasis is not exclusive to measurement and calculation but rather on understanding risk by examining customer needs and building relationships through communication in an effort to better serve risk needs. This approach was mostly evident in Penny bank where risk is operationalized, as opposed to being centralized as in Glass bank and the focus is on customer satisfaction and a moderate risk-return philosophy. The emphasis on this approach is on the agent. The third approach to risk, views risk as a mixture of both system or structure and agent. This approach was most common among the other three (3) smaller banks. Fairly equal weight was ascribed to understanding risk as a social force and measuring it as a wealth creator. In each case, the role of the agent was recognised but the importance of the agent in reproducing organizational outcome is different. This study also finds that the changes made to the risk management system after the financial crisis reflects an intensification of the old procedures in all of the banks. This, is a mostly because bank managers do not believe that the system is inherently flawed (as argued by McGoun 1995) but rather needs to be improved and perfected.

Rossell, Melinda S. "When is Perception Everything? Examining Nurse Perception of Shift-to-Shift Hand-off Report". Thesis, Carlow University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10812598.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Despite concerted efforts to improve the process of shift-to-shift hand-off report (SHR), challenges and barriers continue to threaten the integrity of information shared between nurses. Research studies have demonstrated that vulnerabilities in SHR have been associated with clinical practice demographic factors, lack of a standardized process and tools, and differences in perceived value of SHR.

A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted to identify nurse perception of SHR processes, factors that influence nurse perception of SHR, and nurse perception of bedside shift report (BSR) versus alternative SHR methods. Participants included a convenience sample of registered nursing students (n=49) enrolled in RN-BSN or MSN programs at a private southwestern Pennsylvania university. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and two independent t-Tests were used to analyze data collected from the Handover Evaluation Scale.

Study results revealed there was no statistically significant difference between nurse perception of SHR processes, demographic factors that influence SHR, and the locality of SHR (BSR). In addition, the majority of nurses identified a reluctance to change current practice of conducting the SHR process. There was no identified association between nurse perception of the quality of information (p=.22), interaction and support (p=.96), or efficiency (p=.17) of SHR.

As nurses are key stakeholders in the transfer of crucial up-to-date patient care information, nurse perception of the SHR needs to be further examined and evaluated to improve patient care outcomes. Quality assurance measures are the hallmark of standardized processes to ensure the delivery of safe and effective care.

Abstract (sommario):
As today’s world is becoming more digital, so is almost all business markets are becoming more and more digital and companies that choose to digitalize seem to not only increase efficiency and profitability. It also makes the company better at adapting to change. Despite these upsides, not all companies are digitalizing proven in some part by the panic among companies created by the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to look at if the categorist of management in companies can influence the company's ability to digitalize. This is done by measuring the dynamic capabilities and the entrepreneurial orientation in management and comparing it to the company’s digital maturity. The data was quantitatively by having managers in Sweden completes a survey. A theoretical framework is created to formulate the major theories of the study and relevant hypotheses. To analyze the collected data the multiple regression analysis method was used to see if the variables that any statistical relationship and if the variables have statistical relevance. The results showed that entrepreneurial orientation dint does not have any statistical relevance however dynamic capabilities had a statistical relevance and quite a big effect on the digital maturity of the company. However, a bigger sample for the questioner is suspected to show that entrepreneurial orientation could have had statistical relevance as the sample group for this study was quite small. This study has helpt to fill the gap in knowledge on how management characteristics affect digitalization in companies. The author of this study recommends future research teams conduct more quantitative approaches to get a better picture of how management affects digitalization, by looking at other categorists in management, the important part is that they use a bigger sample size.

Abstract (sommario):
Online communities have become a part of everyday life for many people. The members of the communities use them to keep in touch with family and friends, do business, look for jobs, play games, and more, both savory and unsavory. The ease of sharing personal information comes with the subsequent risk of having that information exposed publically or even stolen. The purpose of this study was to explore how much awareness of the risks affects a person’s decision to post personal information to an online community. Chapter I introduces the concepts and issues that will be investigated by this paper. Chapter II is a review of the literature on risk. Chapter III explains the model that was developed and used determine the relationships between risk perception, attitude, fear, and information revelation. Chapter IV explains the methods used to gather the data and what data was gathered. Chapter V contains the analysis of the data collected. Chapter VI contains the conclusion drawn from the data, implications for the research, and directions for future research.

Abstract (sommario):

While body image disturbances continue to be seen in individuals living in Western society, research has shown that both weight loss and exercise participation can decrease body image disturbance in both men and women. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of a weight management clinic on body perception of obese individuals. Thirty nine participants were a part of a three-month weight management program with caloric restrictive diets and weekly exercise recommendations. The 34-item Multidimensional Body Self Relation Questionnaire, Body Assessment Scale and Social Physique Anxiety Questionnaire were administered at baseline and 12 weeks. All physiological measurements were conducted at baseline and 12 weeks. Based on participant’s weight loss, they were divided into two groups: weight loss and no weight loss. A 2 (baseline, 12 week) X 2 (weight loss achieved, weight loss not achieved) repeated measures ANOVA was conducted with difference between ideal and current body position as the dependent variable to examine the relationship between weight loss and body perception. A 2 (baseline, 12 week) X 2 (weight loss achieved, weight loss not achieved) repeated measures ANOVA with social physique anxiety as the dependent variable was conducted to examine the relationship between weight loss goal achieved and body perception. A 2 (baseline, 12 week) X 2 (weight loss achieved, weight loss not achieved) repeated measures ANOVA with the MBRSQ-AS subscales as the dependent variable was conducted to examine the relationship between weight loss goal achieved and body perception. A Pearson correlation was run to predict weight loss from the MBSRQ-AS subscales, SPA and BAS. The results of this study indicate that there was a significant difference in body perception from baseline to 12 weeks, regardless of weight loss achieved by participants. Additionally, there was no correlation between weight loss and body perception variables.

Carbone, Fabio. "Cultural heritage quality management: analysis of archaeological heritage managers' perception". Doctoral thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/16439.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Doutoramento em Turismo
With this work we propose to analyze the perception of the concept of quality by managers of museums and archaeological sites. To this end, we chose to analyze some heritage areas open to the public and certified by HERITY - World Organisation for the Certification of Quality Management of Cultural Heritage, the only international certification of this kind which has been officially recognized by UNESCO and the World Tourism Organization. The application of the principles of quality and Total Quality Management to cultural heritage management is part of the efforts towards a continuous improvement of the cultural tourism offer and - in our opinion – towards an increasing capacity to promote intercultural dialogue between local population and visitors. In this context, we have therefore investigated the perception of quality within the context of cultural heritage management, and how the culture of quality can provide a greater involvement of local communities, contributing to the strengthening of authenticity and destination personality, as well as the promotion of intercultural dialogue between tourists and residents. To answer these questions, we have defined a theoretical model and subsequently carried out an empirical work at European level on the perception of quality by managers of cultural heritage sites, namely archaeological heritage. An in-depth comprehension of areas such as Archeology, Tourism and Quality Management, as well as its role within the broader context of sustainable regional development, are the basis of this work. The latter is intended, in turn, to be a vehicle of reflection within the creation of public policies on territorial management and tourism development. We thus undertook a research line which is still almost unexplored, that is, the analysis of quality principles within the cultural heritage management, their potential and the measurement of their actual impact on the territory, through an integrated approach, by considering in a specular, complex way the two main beneficiaries: residents and tourists.

Webb, John. "Taxation paradigms : what is the East Anglian perception?" Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2009. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/12879/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Ever since the Peasant's Revolt in 1379/ collection of our taxes has been unpopular. In particular when the taxes are viewed as unfair the population have reacted in significant and even violent ways. For example the Hearth Tax of 1662/ Window Tax of 1747 and the Poll tax of the 1990's have experienced public rejection of these levies. Additionally there has been a major growth in tax avoidance in the last 60 years. All of this may indicate a single ontology of taxation; one where tax is disliked and avoided. However the work of Buchanan (1994) suggested there are alternative ways of viewing taxation by identifying four alternative paradigms of taxation. This research recognises the work of Buchanan (1994) but challenges whether his alternatives are paradigms; other researchers suggest there are factors such as age, gender and background that can influence our view of taxation. If that is true then Buchanan's (1994) work must be interpreted as four alternative perceptions of taxation; that is taxation does not have a single ontology. Based upon primary and secondary research this thesis clearly identifies the factors that can influence our view, perception, of taxation. Contrary to the conclusions of Auderbach (1999) this research considers a matrix of factors rather than adopting Auderbach's view that tax policy is endogenous and should not try to explain taxes from a wide range of factors. This matrix of factors is concluded in the Tax Perception Push-Pull Model which identifies a range of influences and in categorising the factors it identifies the relative strength or importance of the factors. The model concept is tested against the tax changes in,traduced in the UK Budget statement of 2008 and shows there is a balance of push and pull factors, concluding that the population's overall view of taxation should not change.

Oremade, Babatunde Timothy. "Perception of petroleum profits tax compliance in Nigeria". Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2010. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/17520/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this research is to examine whether the extent of tax compliance by oil producing companies in Nigeria is determined by the knowledge, remuneration and incentives of government tax officials. This study sets out to investigate the extent of compliance of oil and gas (exploration and production) companies with the Petroleum Profits Tax Act and to confirm whether lack of sufficient knowledge of the PPT law and poor remuneration and incentives of government tax officials affect tax administration in the upstream sector of the petroleum industry in Nigeria. An extensive literature review was conducted on the historical and legislative background and the incentives available to petroleum companies in Nigeria. The review also covered theories of taxation, tax administration and compliance, tax reforms, tax avoidance and evasion. The literature review revealed gaps which this study attempts to fill. This research has concepts that require both qualitative and quantitative approaches in its design, data collection and data analyses. Consequently, a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was adopted for this study. Face to face interviews were held with experienced regulatory, tax, petroleum companies’ officials and tax and audit practitioners. The researcher uses literature to develop hypotheses which are tested using survey results and backed up by personal interviews. This helps in obtaining results about the behaviour of taxpayers and tax officials in the upstream sector of the petroleum industry in Nigeria. By using a survey, the researcher is able to assess the perceptions of a cross-section of stakeholders in the Nigerian oil industry about the level of compliance with the PPT law. The personal interviews with oil experts provide the benefit of their in-depth knowledge of the oil industry in Nigeria and furnish an understanding of their social world. This research seems to support the perception that the oil producing companies may not be complying fully with the provisions of the Petroleum Profits Tax Act and the Petroleum Act in relation to the payments of royalty and PPT. Interview results suggest that there is a lack of an adequate database of all company taxes paid in Nigeria, minimisation of monthly Royalties and PPT instalments, a dearth of experts on fiscal issues, overwhelming influence of the oil producing companies, poor attitude and inadequate knowledge of the operations of the petroleum industry amongst government tax officials.

Ranchod, Shameem Roshnee. "Public sector pharmacists' perception of the public sector performance management system". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/596.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Performance Management aims to develop the employee and ensure that the work which the employee does is in line with organisational goals. However, many managers and employees do not like performance management systems and very often, for this reason, such a system does not succeed in meeting the organisation’s goals. The aim of this study was to determine the perceptions towards the performance management system of pharmacists working in the public sector. A questionnaire was compiled and pharmacists working in all public sector hospitals, provincial and municipal clinics and medical depots were asked to complete the questionnaire. The response rate was 66 percent. Seventy three percent of respondents had never undergone a performance evaluation, 75 percent stated it did not motivate them, 62.5 percent felt it did not improve poor performance, 90.6 percent felt the Performance Appraisal System did not reward good performance sufficiently and 63.6 percent felt it did not help with career progression. Seventy eight percent believed that the Performance Appraisal System did not effectively measure the pharmacists’ performance, and 82 percent felt that the System needed to be developed further. At least four evaluations should have been completed per year, yet 85 percent of respondents had experienced three or fewer evaluations since the System had been introduced. The analysis of the responses indicated that there was great dissatisfaction with the current performance management system. A few of the reasons are that the system in place did not effectively measure the pharmacists performance, that additional work done was not recognised, and that the process was extremely time-consuming. It may be concluded that the government needs to address the current problems being experienced with this system, as at present, it is not meeting the objectives it was intended to meet.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is the study of the perception and management of pollution risks in Taiwan's electric utility in terms of a social science paradigm of risk. It represents the first examination of Feng Shui belief impact on Taiwanese risk behaviour in electric risk settings. The deep seated culture and widespread practice of Feng Shui in traditional Chinese society would lead to the assumption that Feng Shui belief should strongly influence Taiwan risk behaviour. This empirical study research revealed that Feng Shui belief is much less important to Taiwanese risk behaviour than might have been thought. Most of the variation in electric risk acceptability resulted from the influence of social equity and justice. This study also examined the literature between Feng Shui and risk. What emerged from this is the notion that Feng Shui can be regarded as helpful complementary thinking in a social science paradigm of risk. This study suggests a number of important implications for Taipower Company and risk regulators. The choice about siting of a power plant should take account of the concept of Feng Shui the boundary rather than the concept of the fixed and administrative boundary. Implication also emerged in relation to social trust and the understanding of local residents' risk perception

Abstract (sommario):
Recent disasters have demonstrated the importance of mitigating their potential impact to not only protect human lives, but to also reduce the seemingly unending cycle of repeated damages. The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires state, local, and tribal governments to have FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plans in order to qualify for certain types of Federal funding. However, even with these mandates in place, there are a number of local governments that have yet to adopt a FEMA-approved multi-hazard mitigation plan. Although multi-hazard mitigation plans seem rational for reducing the impact of hazards, efforts to prepare plans and implement mitigation-related activities are oftentimes met with resistance at the local jurisdictional level. The purpose of this qualitative study is to inductively examine the social, financial, and political conditions and forces that contribute to the decision to adopt or not adopt a hazard mitigation plan in the Red River Valley.

Abstract (sommario):
Organizational performance in the healthcare field is of great interest for many stakeholders. Efficient use of resources and delivery of high quality of care should be relevant to any taxpayer hoping to live healthily and grow old in Sweden. Simultaneously, the working conditions for the employees need to be sustainable if the impending lack of 170 000 workers in the healthcare sector by the year of 2030 is to be mitigated (Statistiska centralbyrån, 2012). The scope of this study is to examine how the quality management systems applied to ensure and improve the aforementioned objectives are perceived by the individual employees. Specifically, practitioners in the nursing professions are enquired about the design principles of enabling control as described by Adler and Borys (1996). The study has utilized a quantitative methodology and an online survey to collect personal perceptions and experiences from 400 individuals in the nursing professions on this topic. Major findings are that the majority of the respondents state that they perceive three out of four of the design principles of an enabling system to be present in the quality management system at their workplace. In addition, there is a strong association between the perception of the enabling characteristics flexibility and repair and general job satisfaction. Further studies with larger samples would increase the statistical power of these correlations. In addition, a large proportion of the respondents perceive that the quality management processes is negatively affected by financial constraints. Only a minority of the respondents perceive the workload constituted by tasks connected to quality management as reasonable.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MComm (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Against the background of the challenge marketers face in influencing consumer perceptions of brands, this study attempts to assess the effect of the senses on the perception of a brand. Perception is the way in which consumers interpret the world around them, with the senses as the receptors of information from the environment. One way of influencing consumer perceptions is by stimulating or involving multiple senses in brand building. To test this statement, the following research question was drawn: ‘Do the senses affect the perception of a brand?’The empirical study was one of an experimental nature, and a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design was used to assess the effect of the senses on the perception of a brand. In order to focus the research and to provide information to a leading distributor of alcohol spirits in South Africa, it was decided to concentrate on alcohol, more specifically, brandy. Due to the nature of the selected brand, sensory properties in relation to the product were used to measure the effect of the senses on brand perception. The nature of the brand is a consumable, and taste was used as the dependant variable to measure perceptions. The stimulated senses in the experiment are sight, sound and smell. The stimuli were: sight with the visible brandy colour, sound in the form of brandy being poured into a glass and smell as an enhanced honey aroma. Several experiments were conducted in a sensory laboratory, which assessed the effect of the senses on the perception of a brand, by way of individual main effects, two-way interactions and a three-way interaction. A convenience sample of 240 alcohol spirit consumers, from the Western Cape, was used to conduct the experiment. The empirical results indicated that the three independent variables (individual main effects or two-way interactions) did not have significant effects on perception. Most importantly, it was found that the three-way interaction of sight, sound and smell did have a significant effect on the perception of a brand. Therefore, this study revealed that multiple stimulated senses affect the perception of a brand.

Abstract (sommario):

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore emergency nurses’ perception of patient-initiated violence in eastern Tennessee. Twenty-four rural eastern Tennessee nurses participated in the study. The 24 participants were assigned to one of four gender specific focus groups. The focus groups offered qualitative data associated with the phenomenon. Themes and subthemes emerged from the analysis of participants responses using Colaizzi’s (1978) strategies. The responses were segmented and compared to identify similar phrases or words. The data analysis detected five themes. Victimization manifested as participants’ feelings and a lack of executive leadership support. Re-victimization due to rural nurses’ continual exposure to patients who previously committed violent acts. A lack of executive leadership support was identified. Self-care deficit resulting from the participants’ post-exposure symptoms. Distinct gender differences were evident in this study. Implications include exploring an open dialogue between emergency nurses, nursing leadership, and executive leadership to develop policies that support the rural emergency nurse and establish policies that mitigate violence. Gender differences can be explored through individual discussion with emergency leadership leading to an individualized action plan that can foster self-care, employee engagement, and retain staff at the bedside.

Abstract (sommario):

This study analyzes different demographic groups and the ability to understand a physician and how this contributes to feeling carefully listened to. There are four hypotheses being tested, each predicting a different group within each variable will feel the most carefully listened to. The Statistical Package for Social Services (SPSS) was used to analyze data from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). The portion of the survey that focused on adults was utilized in this study. Data was analyzed using t-tests and ANOVA tests. The results of the study determined that the elderly, males, and participants that could understand their physician felt the most carefully listened to for each variable. As for race, Whites, African American, and participants that identified as more than one race felt more carefully listened to when compared to Asians and participants that identified as a race not specified. These finding only supported one hypothesis, participants that understood their physician would feel that most carefully listened to. Theses result are a valuable tool that can be used to being quality improvement efforts focused on patient centered communication.

Hippolyte, Vernice Camilla. "World Heritage Status, Governance and Perception in the Pitons Management Area, St.Lucia". Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4904.

Abstract (sommario):
There are currently 962 geographic sites in the world that have been classified as World Heritage. World Heritage is a unique concept, privy to and defined by UNESCO-- the United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization, one of the specialized agencies and autonomous organizations established within the UN-United Nations system. World Heritage is governed by an international treaty called the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972 (The `Convention'). The inscription of a World Heritage Site or designation of World Heritage Status is highly coveted and considered in UNESCO parlance to be of "Outstanding Value to Humanity." There are only 4 heritage property sites of English-speaking islands in the Caribbean basin, one of which is located on the island of St. Lucia called The Pitons Management Area (PMA). The PMA comprises 2902 hectares of protected marine and terrestrial property inscribed in 2004. In 2008, the island faced the threat of placement on UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger (LWHD) for breaches of the Convention. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceptions of World Heritage Status from three identified stakeholders: UNESCO, the St. Lucian national government and the local Soufrière township-home of the PMA. This was an exploratory attempt at gauging perceptions of local voices on World Heritage Status as it relates to the PMA and the island's classification as a small-island developing state (SIDS). Using political ecology as a theoretical framework for analyzing the role of power relationships in this case study, this research revealed that there is an overall lack of communication between the Soufrière community and the national government regarding education and sensitizing about the World Heritage program mandates and incorporating the local citizenry in the protection of their heritage. The majority of the local participants' support for World Heritage Status on the island of St. Lucia was dependent on perceptions of increased income and employment opportunities associated with World Heritage as a global construct and narrative. This research also showed concerns of UNESCO and the St. Lucian national government to be at odds with the 1972 Convention. Results indicated that the varied perceptions of the three stakeholder groups are based on the prioritized interests of each and incommensurate with the aims of protecting the PMA's heritage for posterity.

Abstract (sommario):
Failure to receive critical and timely information from emergency management professionals (EMPs) may lead to the loss of life during disasters and emergencies. Recent research and government reports have indicated that there may be communication failures between EMPs and minority community members, though little is known about how minority communities perceive EMP communication efforts. The central research questions and purpose of this study were designed to explore the experiences of minority community members in receiving and interpreting disaster-related communications from EMPs. Data for this phenomenological study were acquired through-in-depth interviews with 13 African Americans (7 males and 6 females) located in a southern state. The data were transcribed; inductively coded; and analyzed for trends, themes, and patterns. This study yielded 2 key findings. First, these 13 participants perceived a lack of dialogue and interaction from local EMPs; however, they were more open to communication through their church rather than through other official communication venues. Second, Kim's theory of interethnic communication offers relevant explanatory value for these participants because it discusses the attributes of the single communicator (emergency manager) engaging with another individual (citizen). These findings offer opportunities for positive social change and enhanced communication between EMPs and their minority constituents. Effective communication methods that EMPs might implement include creating strategic alliances with community cultural centers such as churches, civic organizations, and other places at which members of minority communities interact.

Koigi, Stephen. "Perception of quantity surveyors advising on building specifications to support sustainable building developments". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/27328.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: This research investigates the role and perceptions of quantity surveyors experienced with sustainable building projects and how they are able contribute as well as influence designs to address sustainability issues on projects. Design: To determine the considerations that affect quantity surveyors' perceptions towards sustainability in the construction industry, a literature review was carried out. This was followed by the development of an online survey formed of both structured and semi-structured questions that were issued out to South African quantity surveyors. This study administers online surveys distributed online to quantity surveyors on the ASAQS and the Green Building Council database consisting of 1499 registered members and 59 members respectively. Furthermore, in depth interviews were carried out with four quantity surveyors who had experience with green building projects. Findings: South Africa is accustomed to traditional building methods and the adoption of and adaptation to alternative building techniques is challenging to implement in the industry. The main barriers to sustainable building designs were the perceived higher cost of the materials as well as the lack of training and knowledge consultants have on material choices. Quantity surveyors nevertheless regarded the early design stages of a construction project as an ideal avenue for contribution towards sustainable building designs. Based on interviews conducted, professional quantity surveyors with experience on green building projects were more likely to contribute towards sustainable building specifications due to lessons learnt and knowledge from previous projects. However, quantity surveyors believed they generally have little influence towards green building specifications as the client and architect have the final say on what is incorporated into a building. Practical implications: The research study has provided a greater understanding of the role played by cost consultants on sustainability projects and how they can provide value to clients on such projects. Conclusions and Recommendations: The research concludes that Quantity surveyors are aware that they play a minor role player on project teams when it comes to providing alternative building specifications. It was acknowledged that quantity surveyors have limited experience on sustainable technologies and that further training and education in this regard is essential for them to add value to projects. It is recommended that further research be undertaken to obtain a larger sample size to get a clearer view of the perception of quantity surveyors advising on building specifications to support sustainable building developments.
