Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIn this paper I argue that representations of homosexuality in modern Arabic literature have tended to isolate it and contain its threat through a conceptual strai(gh)tjacket that I term “epistemic closure.” I begin by analyzing Saʿd Allah Wannus's playTuqus al-Isharat wa-l-Tahawwulatas an essentialist paradigm of closure, where a language of interiority and essence identifies male homosexuality with passivity and femininity, subordinated a priori to a sexually and socially dominant masculinity. Then, I examine ʿAlaʾ al-Aswani's novelʿImarat Yaʿqubyanas a constructionist example of the same closure, in which homosexuality is explained through a narrative of abnormal development that circumscribes its diffuse potential. Finally, I read Huda Barakat'sSayyidi wa-Habibias a “queer” novel that links homosexuality to the continuum of male homosocial desire, thereby disrupting the normative distribution of center and margin and suggesting a way out of the epistemic closure imposed on homosexuality.

Abstract (sommario):
We investigated the hypothesis that certain signs in the Draw-A-Person projective technique reflect male homosexuality. Human figure drawings from 88 gay and 88 heterosexual men, with no clinical psychological symptoms, were submitted to trained raters who were blind to the purpose of this research. The raters independently judged whether 21 signs, previously referenced in the literature as suggestive of male homosexuality, were present in the figure drawings. Only two signs, hair and hips, differentiated between groups. Results were interpreted in the light of changing social attitudes towards homosexuals and methodological problems of prior studies.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Daoist art of the bedchamber (fangzhong shu 房中術) constitutes a form of cultivation practice with the objective of promoting health and longevity through sexual techniques, generally applied within heterosexual contexts. However, with the evolution of male homosexuality culture during the Ming and Qing dynasties, depictions of the art of the bedchamber related to male homosexuality emerged in the literature of that era. This art was imaginatively traced back to Laozi and his disciple Yin Xi 尹喜. The sources explained the beneficial outcomes of these techniques by referring to classical Chinese cosmology: underage males were considered to have yin energy in their bodies, a condition similar to that in females, aligning with the fundamental principles of the heterosexual art of the bedchamber. Serving as a religious interpretation of emerging cultural trends rather than representing a new cultivation technique, this fictive art legitimizes homosexual practices among males, particularly those adhering to Daoism.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper aims to offer a critical review of the existing research on the relationships between tourism and male homosexual identities and, based on a sociocultural perspective, suggestions for specific directions in future research. Design/methodology/approach The analysis is based on a review of the literature that focuses on two independent yet intersecting topics: tourism and homosexuality and identity formation processes. Findings Specific directions for future research are offered regarding the role that tourism plays in homosexual identity development. The proposed paths for future research include the tangible contributions of tourism to the stages of homosexual tourists’ identity development and the (re)construction, negotiation and globalisation of homosexual and queer identities through tourists’ cultural interactions. Two further suggested directions are the significance of tourism for non-Western homosexual tourists and tourism’s impacts on local homosexual identities. Research limitations/implications This study is based solely on the existing literature on male homosexuality and mostly on studies published in English. Originality/value The research included a critical analysis of the commonly assumed significance of tourism in homosexual identity formation. The results provide directions for future empirical research and calls for a solid theoretical foundation that allows researchers to demonstrate, understand and explain how tourism contributes to gay and queer identities.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractRepresentation of lesbian relations in Ming-Qing vernacular literature is foremost a male discourse. A close look into this discourse will help gauge the contemporary social stance, especially the male stance, towards lesbianism. This paper examines textual strategies and the narrative norm of portraying lesbian love and sex in twelve Ming-Qing texts. The normative pattern extracted from these texts suggests a consensus in the male position that favors suppression of lesbianism via trivializing or heterosexualizing passions and romance between women. Male writing on lesbianism thus seems to function as containment of homosexuality for the benefit of the institutions of heterosexual sex and marriage.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis will examine how gay men are depicted in mainstream Japanese pop culture. To be discussed are: gay-themed comics for girls, mainstream movies in which the protagonists are gay, and finally, gay men's magazines which are gay authored and consumed. In examining how fantasies in these texts respond to the needs of various readerships, it is possible to understand how important and challenging it is for gay Japanese men to create identities of their own, identities which will allow them more possibilities than the prevailing facade of compulsory heterosexuality, complete with marriage and children.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Following on the proposition that the history of Western thought is importantly constituted by a discourse of male-male pedagogic or pederastic relations stretching in narrative form, according to Allan Bloom, from the Phaedrus to Death in Venice, the deconstructive project of reading 'against the visible grain' has been mobilised in the interests of interrogating and unsettling what can only be defined as homophobic misreadings of Martin Boyd. Critical discursive practice, by the near-uniform imposition of a tacit censorship, has refused by means of erasure, silence and repression to reflect on Boyd from the perspective of sexual definition or same-sex love and desire, presumably in the belief that there are no interpretive consequences. In the process, an hypothesis of Boyd as himself mounting an act of social criticism by surreptitiously contesting conventional and hierarchical typologies of masculinity in the margins of institutionalised and popular hegemonic culture, seems to have escaped inscription in the canonical records. Martin Boyd's 'dividedness', 'doubleness', ambivalences and dichotomies point to a complexity that is not ultimately or ontologically resolvable. The Derridean 'de-sedimentation' modus operandi used here makes no claim to a relevatory hermeneutics of Hegelian essence. It does, however, utilise the various tropes of ambivalence, uncertainty, anxiety and incoherence — aspects of Boyd which may be correlated, perhaps, with his sense of the unheimlich or not being at home with himself or his environment — to reposition him in terms of his psychosexual constitution. In the process, the advocacy of aestheticism and pleasure for which he is recognised is found to be tempered and/or subverted by an overt recourse to the transgressive and 'decadent', elements irretrievably linked to his fetishization of the beautiful male body and his obsessive redeployment of the Hellenic ideal of manly love. The interpretive frameworks applied in the reclamation of the 'different' sensibility Boyd articulates by means of an alternately subtilized and strenuous challenge to sex/gender identity and behavioural norms encompass a field ranging from late nineteenth century theoretical discourse on homosexuality through to the intertextual influences of cultural innovators like Pater and Wilde. It includes reference to the literary strategies devised by Sedgwick to uncover deviance and 'erotic pathways'; it surveys the psychoanalytic hypotheses of Freud and Adler as relevant; and it pays heed to an aesthetics of the religio-erotic.

Zamostny, Jeffrey. "FAUSTIAN FIGURES: MODERNITY AND MALE (HOMO)SEXUALITIES IN SPANISH COMMERCIAL LITERATURE, 1900-1936". UKnowledge, 2012. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/hisp_etds/4.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
I contend in this study that commercial novels and theater from early twentiethcentury Spain often present male (homo)sexual characters as a point of constellation for anxieties regarding modernization in Madrid and Barcelona. In works by Jacinto Benavente, Josep Maria de Sagarra, El Caballero Audaz (José María Carretero), Antonio de Hoyos y Vinent, Carmen de Burgos, Álvaro Retana, Eduardo Zamacois, and Alfonso Hernández-Catá, concerns about technological and socioeconomic change converge upon hustlers and blackmailers, queer seducers, and chaste inverts. I examine these figures alongside an allegorical interpretation of Goethe’s Faust in Marshall Berman’s book All That is Solid Melts into Air: The Experience of Modernity (1982) in order to foreground their varying responses to modern innovation. They alternately sell themselves to prosper under consumer capitalism, seduce others into savoring the pleasures of city life, or fall tragically to the conflicting pressures of tradition and change. In the process, they reveal the fear and enthusiasm of their creators vis-à-vis rapid urbanization, fluctuating class hierarchies, the commercialization of art, and the medicalization of sex from the turn of the nineteenth century to the Spanish Civil War. From a methodological standpoint, I argue that close readings of commercial works are worthwhile for what they reveal about the discursive framing of modernity and male (homo)sexualities in Spain in the early 1900s. Hence, I use techniques of literary analysis previously reserved for canonical writers such as Federico García Lorca and Luis Cernuda to discuss texts produced by their bestselling contemporaries, none of whom has been equally scrutinized by subsequent criticism. Existing scholarship on modernity and sexuality in Spain and abroad helps contextualize my detailed interpretations. Although my project is not a sustained exercise in comparative literature, I do situate Spanish works within historical and literary trends beyond Spain so as to acknowledge the interplay of transnational and local concerns surrounding modern change and sexual customs. By considering the primary texts in relation to varying temporal and geographic contexts, the dissertation aims to be of interest to a readership in and outside Hispanism, and to supplement important studies of modernity, (homo)sexualities, and literature that overlook Spain.

Abstract (sommario):
This study employs Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to quantitatively analyze the descriptions of male and female body parts in Portuguese literature. We investigate these descriptions' frequency, specificity, and objectification by examining a corpus of literary works. The results indicate distinct differences in how male and female bodies are portrayed, revealing evidence of gender bias in the choice of specific descriptors for body parts. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse surrounding gender representation in literature, shedding light on the potential biases in textual descriptions. Furthermore, it underscores the significance of NLP techniques in uncovering patterns within literary texts, providing valuable insights into data mining. Through this analysis, we deepen our understanding of gender dynamics within literary works and foster critical discussions on representation in literature.

Abstract (sommario):
We present a novel Natural Language Processing (NLP) pipeline designed to analyze gender bias in Portuguese literary works. Our pipeline comprises five processing steps, culminating in gender bias detection across different linguistic dimensions. We apply it to a corpus of Portuguese literary texts and evaluate its effectiveness in uncovering gender bias. Our findings reveal prevalent gender stereotypes in character descriptions, with female characters often associated with appearance and emotion, while male characters are depicted in terms of social status and personality traits. Furthermore, our analysis of physical traits stereotypes indicates a more equitable representation across genders in such a dimension.

Abstract (sommario):
Primary sarcomas of the breast originate from connective tissue and are responsible for less than 1% of all breast malignancies with an incidence of 5 cases per million in the United States. Primary breast angiosarcoma originates in the parenchyma and can secondarily compromise the skin and pectoral muscles in advanced cases. Sarcoma is present more in women between the ages of 14 and 82, mainly in the third and fourth decades of life. At diagnosis, as in other sarcomas, the size is bigger than 5 cm, with a direct correlation with prognosis; because of few data in literature due to its incidence and frequent error and the inespecific clinical and radiological signs, we report a case of breast angiosarcoma in a male patient from the Hospital Santo Antônio/Obras Sociais Irmã Dulce, Salvador, BA. It is the case of a 42-year-old man with a nodule in the upper medial quadrant of the right breast, measuring 2 cm. The mammogram and ultrasound showed a 1.4-cm regular nodule in the upper medial quadrant, BI-RADS 4. The patient underwent a core biopsy with a pathology reporting a chronic inflammatory process and a nonmalignant neoplasia; immunohistochemical positive for CD 68 and LCA and negative for cytokeratin 34beta12, P63, and cytokeratin AE1/AE3. Then, the nodule was excised and the pathology result showed a fusiform cell neoplasia with a positive posterior margin confirmed by immunohistochemical that neoplastic cells were positive for CD34 and CD31, negative for cytokeratin AE1/AE3, and inconclusive to smooth muscle actin with KI-67 <10%, leading to the diagnosis of angiosarcoma. After that, the margins re-excision the pathological staging (American Joint Committee on Cancer) ypT0. No evidence was found for metastases in other sites. The patient is now waiting for radiotherapy for local control benefits. There were 16 fractions in the right breast and a multidisciplinary follow-up. The discussion showed a rare case in the literature in agreement with the 170 cases reported, with a great impact when seen in men since the case reported prevalence in women. In relation to diagnosis, it becomes a challenge, especially in low-grade malignant tumors with multiple tissue pieces and needed the best pathology analysis, which could delay treatment. The inespecific alterations in imaging examinations as well as at tests, such as the presence of fatty tissue in a mammogram, would include hemangiomas and angiolipomas as differential diagnosis contributing to delay in the diagnosis. As treating large tumor resection due to aggressive behavior is recommended, it is a therapeutic option if associated with radiotherapy reducing risk by 20–50%. That was the treatment adopted for the patient described above. This study, besides contributing to the literature on angiosarcoma incidence, also affects the possible presentation in male patients, elevating the diagnostic hypothesis of nodule in the cases of early adequate treatment.

Abstract (sommario):
Male breast cancer (MMC) corresponds to 0.5% of cases of malignant neoplasms in men. Among the associated risk factors are black ethnicity, age over 60 years, family history, BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, Klinefelter syndrome, the use of exogenous estrogen, gynecomastia, obesity, and a history of chest radiation. Regarding diagnosis and treatment, the standard trend for female breast cancer is still followed, with few studies in men. We report the case of an 81-yearold black patient with few risk factors exposed in the literature. On physical examination at entry, he presented an exophytic lesion in the right breast and palpable and hardened lymph nodes in the right axillary region. With an established diagnosis of nonspecial type invasive carcinoma and invasive ductal carcinoma without other specifications by previous biopsy, a modified right radical mastectomy was performed with right axillary dissection and according to the pathological examination with pT4b pN1 pMx staging. Thus, as a result of the good evolution of the condition, the patient was discharged 2 days after the surgery to the oncology clinic, in order to monitor the condition.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: The specialty of neurosurgery over time has become increasingly sought after. Even with the gradual increase in women specialists in neurosurgery, they are still represented by a very small number in comparison to the number of male neurosurgeons. Objectives: Present the gender gap within neurosurgery. Methods: This is a systematic literature review, with the search terms: “gender” AND “women” AND “Neurology” AND “Neurosurgery”, resulting in 645 articles on the Pubmed, Lilacs, Scielo, Cochrane and TripDataBase search platforms. The inclusion criteria were: original studies published in any language. Published articles that prevented full access, as well as systematic reviews or not, were excluded. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 6 articles were included. Results: The databases of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS) revealed that women represent only 12.0% of residents in neurosurgery. Most of them left training in the first 3 years and remained in Medicine, looking for other specialties. In addition, the female conflict rate with the team was 17.0% compared to a 5.3% male rate. The low number of women in neurosurgical residency programs can result in a consequent decrease in female tutors, lack of rise in female professionals and non-adherence of medical students in residency programs. Conclusions: The percentage of women in medicine has increased in recent years, however the number of women who pursue a neurosurgical career is still very small, when compared to the total number of neurosurgeon men.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Introduction: Artistic gymnastics is an Olympic sport in which male artistic gymnasts perform on six apparatuses. The number of weekly training sessions can reach to 12, with 36 hours overall load. Methodology: The research was conducted among 15 elite and 16 sub-elite gymnasts on international and national level from Sofia, Bulgaria. The participants filled in a questionnaire about the type, severity, location, and reasons for the appearance of injuries. Results: We calculated injury incidence at 93.33% for elite and 87.50% for sub-elite male artistic gymnasts. The injury rate for elite gymnasts was 2.19/1000 gymnastic exposures and 2.87 injuries per gymnast for the year. The injury rate for sub-elite gymnasts was 3.78/1000 gymnastic exposures and 2.13 injuries per gymnast for the year. The acute injuries dominated in all participants. Shoulder is the most often injured anatomical location as a result of the exercises performed on rings and horizontal bar. Ankle is the next often traumatized location because of the exercises done on floor and vault (landing phase). Conclusions: Literature describing injuries in male artistic gymnasts is scarce, which makes it relatively difficult to compare gender data. Injury rates in the male artistic gymnasts we studied fall within the range described in the sports literature.

Abstract (sommario):
Review question / Objective: By systematically reviewing articles investigating male mouse aggression we wanted to map how the literature in the field support, or not, the available recommendations on how to prevent aggression in group housed male mice, and to detect knowledge gaps that ought to be filled. We also wanted to address and describe how aggression have been measured in the literature, since this may influence the possibility to translate outcomes to normal husbandry conditions and contribute to useful recommendations. Condition being studied: Aggression between male cage mates is one of the main problems in laboratory mouse husbandry, affecting both animal welfare and scientific quality.

Abstract (sommario):
In 1975 employment in the majority of trades’ areas was dominated by men, and this fact, associated with a significant wage disparity, generated considerable social debate at that time. A number of newspaper articles in New Zealand highlighted the lack of female participation in traditionally male occupations. Using an intensive literature review and statistical analysis of available records, this paper investigates whether the numbers of women employed as plumbers in New Zealand have changed between 1975 and the present day. Having established that the proportion of female plumbers is almost unchanged during this period, this research then compares this information with data gathered from other trades and exposes the widespread nature of this trend across traditionally male dominated industries. This data is also compared to gender-based employment rates in the non-trades professions. The potential causes underlying this tendency are discussed. Finally the paper reflects on what, if anything, could to be done to alter this situation.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Mesenteric pseudocyst (MP) is a rare heterogeneous group of intra-abdominal benign cystic lesions with different etiopathogenesis and clinically silent behaviours. These lesions are introduced as one of the entities based on the histological features of thick fibrous cyst walls, barren of the epithelial lining. Often, they present as expanding abdominal masses or are diagnosed incidentally in conventional radiological studies, exploratory laparotomies, or with symptoms of complications such as infection, torsion, or rupture. Surgical removal of the cyst, with or without resection of the affected intestinal segment, is the treatment of choice. Depending upon the size and location of the lesion and related complications, it can be managed by open surgical procedures or laparoscopic approach. Only a handful of 7 cases of traumatic mesenteric cysts have been reported yet in the vicinity of blunt abdominal trauma. We report a rare incidentally detected case of mesenteric pseudocyst (traumatic) in a male of early 20s with a history of blunt abdominal trauma 13 months back and for which serial abdominal exploratory laparotomies were performed. A brief review of the literature is provided, conforming to the rarity of the case. This case highlights the role of histomorphology in diagnosing a benign cystic entity with accuracy, that could be misdiagnosed as infectious granulomatous lesion.

Minkanic, Michelle, e Emily Tran. Socioeconomic and Cultural Factors Influencing Type of Hormonal Contraceptive Use in Women in Developed vs Under-Developed Geographic Areas. Science Repository, aprile 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.31487/j.cei.2024.01.01.

Abstract (sommario):
The intent of this study is to identify and compare sociocultural barriers in various geographic regions that impede access, type and use of hormonal contraception, and methods to improve restrictions in access. Understanding and addressing sociocultural barriers to hormonal contraception on a larger intercontinental scale can create a more effective and inclusive healthcare system. A search using PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase was conducted on current and past literature performed in various developmental countries. Terms such as “birth control access AND developed nations”, “barriers of hormonal contraception AND low-income countries” were used. Studies included ranged from RCTs, cross-sectional studies, literature reviews, and meta-analyses. Countries reviewed with lower levels of development in Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America have demonstrated a rise in long-acting hormonal contraception (LARCs) after injectables. Barriers in these regions include misconceptions fertility and contraception use, access to modern contraceptives (these include oral and emergency contraceptive pills, implants, injectables, contraceptive patches and rings, intrauterine devices, female and male sterilization, vaginal barrier methods and female condoms), stigma and patriarchal settings that result in male influence on women’s reproductive choices. More developed regions of the world like the United States and Europe demonstrated a range of contraceptive options with the most compliance for intrauterine implants (IUDs) in younger reproductive women. The greatest hindrances for developed regions were cost, difficulty obtaining appointments, and fallacies for future fertility. Contraceptive education and culturally sensitive counseling should be emphasized for healthcare employees serving women with ease of access, and to strengthen reproductive support services. Advocating to provide underdeveloped regions with better contraceptive resources highlights an importance to give women globally the empowerment to choose the direction of their own reproductive journey.
