Abstract (sommario):
The paper presents performance analysis of a rod breakdown system consisting of two machines operating in parallel. Ten years maintenance data of the system depicts three maintenance practices: repair, major preventive maintenance and minor preventive maintenance. Machines are repaired on normal failures, whereas major/minor preventive maintenance is carried out at scheduled basis. The machines are queued for major preventive maintenance. An operative machine requires a cooling period of half hour before undergoing major preventive maintenance. Repair is prioritized over major preventive maintenance. The system is analysed using semi-Markov processes and regenerative point techniques. Performance indices namely mean time to system failure, system availability, no. of system repairs and busy period of the repairman are obtained. Simulated results are presented to demonstrate the effect of varying failure/repair rates on the system performance.

Abstract (sommario):
Allowing several imperfect repairs before a perfect repair can lead to a highly reliable and efficient system by reducing repair time and repair cost. Assuming exponential lifetime and exponential repair time, we determine the optimal probability $p$ of choosing a perfect repair over an imperfect repair after each failure. Based on either the limiting availability or the limiting average repair cost per unit time, we determine the optimal number of imperfect repairs before conducting a perfect repair.

Abstract (sommario):
A system is repaired on failure. With probability p, it is returned to the ‘good as new' state (perfect repair) and with probability 1 – p, it is returned to the functioning state, but is only as good as a system of age equal to its age at failure (imperfect repair). In this article, we develop replacement policies for a deteriorating system with imperfect maintenance. The successive survival times and consecutive repair times form a geometric process which is stochastically non-increasing or non-decreasing respectively. Explicit expressions are obtained for the long-run expected cost under two kinds of replacement policies based on the working age of the system and the number of imperfect repairs before a replacement.

Abstract (sommario):
Rapid advancement of data management and sharing technology has urged organizations to develop effective maintenance management systems. This research, therefore, proposes and implements an Electronic Repair Records (ERR) system for the blockchain of maintenance planning and management. In ERR, this research develops two optimization models for scheduling and sequencing failure repairs from different types over multiple periods. Each failure repair is treated as a block, for which the data, current hash, and previous hash are obtained from failure repair parameters, resources availability information, and the optimal values of the start and finish times of the assigned failure repairs. The scheduling model assigns failure repairs to technicians and in maintenance shops on each scheduling period at a minimal total cost of delay, undertime, and overtime costs, while the sequencing model sequences the assigned failure repairs at minimal total overtime costs and minimum total repair start times. Once the blocks are confirmed, the blockchain is then shared through an electronic network among all maintenance departments. The developed ERR system was implemented to manage the repairs of 36 failures from different failures in six maintenance shops over a period of three days. The results showed that this system is found to be effective in managing optimal repairs and efficient in improving the utilization of available resources in maintenance shops. These advantages may result in significant savings in maintenance costs and better utilization of resources. In conclusion, the developed ERR system including the optimization models can provide in real-time assistance and de-centralized technology to planning engineers when managing maintenance activities over multiple periods in a wide range of business applications.

Abstract (sommario):
In the military units of the National Guard of Ukraine, a system for repairing automotive vehicles has been introduced, which provides for current, secondary and overhaul repairs. Maintenance of machines is carried out in order to eliminate malfunctions arising from the use of machines, and allows the replacement of individual units, including the main one. The average repair consists in the replacement or overhaul of not more than half of the main units. Overhaul restores the life of the machine and should be carried out at specialized enterprises of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine or at other enterprises under contracts. Actually, in the military units of NGU, only current repairs are carried out. This is due to the high cost of overhaul and its low quality. Therefore, for the military units of the NGU, a diagnostic and recovery system for repairing automotive vehicles is proposed, including two types of repair: maintenance and restoration. The essence of maintenance repair consists in eliminating malfunctions, violations of adjustments during the operation of the machines according to the inspection, listening ? diagnostics with built-in and external diagnostic devices. Reconditioning repair consists in carrying out repair operations related to disassembling, troubleshooting, mechanical or other processing of component parts, assembling units, assemblies, testing them, and, if necessary, replacing them with new or repaired ones. Maintenance and repair repairs of automotive equipment are carried out only if there is a need for their implementation. It is proposed to establish ten parameters of the diagnostic and recovery system for the repair of automotive equipment at NGU and determine the life of the machine only before being discarding. The procedure for determining the number of machines that must be written off and get new ones to increase the non-reduced resource in each operation group is given.

Abstract (sommario):
Assuming exponential lifetime and repair time distributions, we study the limiting availability A∞ as well as the per unit time-limiting profit ω of a one-unit system having two identical, cold standby spare units using semi-Markov processes. The failed unit is repaired either by an in-house repairer within an exponential patience time T or by an external expert who works faster but charges more. When there are two repair facilities, we allow the regular repairer to begin repair or to continue repair beyond T if the expert is busy. Two models arise accordingly as the expert repairs one or all failed units during each visit. We show that (1) adding a second spare to a one-unit system already backed by a spare raises A∞ as well as ω; (2) thereafter, adding a second repair facility improves both criteria further. Finally, we determine whether the expert must repair one or all failed units to maximize these criteria and fulfill the maintenance management objectives better than previously studied models.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Sustainability encapsulates economic, environmental and societal domains. In order to conform to these domains, the efficiency of maintenance and repair of heritage buildings is no exception. Emergently, environmental considerations for sustainable heritage buildings repair have become increasingly important. The purpose of this paper is to present a decision-making process based on “Green Maintenance Model” – an appraisal approach based on life cycle assessment (LCA) of paint repair options for heritage buildings. Design/methodology/approach Calculation procedures of Green Maintenance model within selected boundaries of LCA enable evaluation of carbon emissions, in terms of embodied carbon expenditure, expended from paint repair for heritage buildings during maintenance phase. Findings “Green Maintenance” model could be understood as a carbon LCA of paint repair and has been recognized in reducing carbon emissions. Significantly, the model underpins decision-making for repair options for heritage buildings. Practical implications It must be emphasized that the calculation procedures of Green Maintenance model is not limited to heritage buildings and can be applied to any repair types, materials used and building forms. More importantly, this model practically supports environmentally focused conservation and promotes sustainable repair approach. Social implications The implementation of Green Maintenance model highlights the efficiency of repairs options that may be adopted. Originality/value Green Maintenance shows that generated environmental maintenance impact from repair options relays the “true” embodied carbon expenditure contextualized within the longevity of repair and its embodied carbon. This will consequently allow rationale in appraisal of repair options.

Adé, Kémy. "Kupffer Cell Maintenance in Tissue Repair and Ageing". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021SORUS312.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Kupffer cells (KCs) are resident macrophages of the liver. Professional phagocytes of the innate immune system, they take part in the first line of defence against infections and injury. They also actively regulate liver homeostasis. Recent works have elucidated their origin. We now know that, like most other tissue resident macrophages, KCs develop during embryonic life from Erythro-Myeloid Progenitors (EMPs), seed the liver during development and persist there in adulthood. During inflammation, however, they can be joined by recently differentiated macrophages that arise from circulating monocytes belonging to the Haematopoietic Stem Cell (HSC) descendance. Here I studied the ability of mouse KCs to maintain themselves throughout life, and into old age. Using flow cytometry and fate mapping strategies, we showed that KC density decreased over time and was not compensated by recruitment of circulating cells. RNA sequencing, analysis of TicamLPS2 mutants and Poly (I:C)-induced repeated inflammation experiments highlighted the contribution of inflammation to the ageing phenotype. This phenotype correlated with lipid and senescent cell accumulation. We further studied KC maintenance in acetaminophen induced liver injury and after depletion induced by a CSF1R antagonist. In both contexts, KCs were able to maintain themselves through local proliferation without significant input from circulating cells. These experiments will provide a framework for the better characterisation of KC functions in injury and disease

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Peninsula Technikon, 2001
Maintenance of locomotives is the main function of Bellville Locomotive Traction Depot in the Western Cape. Therefore, it is important to have a sound maintenance plan in place, to prevent a negative impact on the availability and reliability of locomotive supply for hauling power to train services. The purpose of the research is to determine the causes of the increased frequency of maintenance through a case study relating to 35-class locomotives. The abnormal increased frequency of wheel change and inter-bogie control repairs on 35-class diesel locomotives is investigated. A research survey was adopted, which included questionnaires and personal interviews based on the literature search. The target group is L&N section, which includes below-deck maintenance, overhaul and change out, repairs to locomotive bogies, frames, wheels, snubbers, inter-bogie control and traction motors. Sixteen people are responsible for all below-deck repairs and service of 52 locomotives. The results of the research will expose the shortcomings of the maintenance plan and propose solutions. This will be achieved by testing the effectiveness of the existing maintenance plan at Spoornet through the identification of the causes for the abnormal increase in wheel changes and inter-bogie control repairs on 35-class diesel locomotives. The outcome from this case study research will be to quantify the benefits arising from the effective application of a maintenance plan.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study investigates the feasibility of strengthening reinforced concrete beams with epoxy-bonded Glass-Fiber-Reinforced-Plastic (GFRP) plates. The composite plate is epoxy-bonded to the tension flange of the beam to increase its stiffness and strength. Seven rectangular and one T-beam, retrofitted with composite plates, were tested to failure under symmetrical 4-point bending. The load versus deflection and the load versus strain in the composite plate, steel rebar and the extreme compression fiber of concrete were measured and plotted for the midspan section throughout the entire range of loading up to failure. Analytical models based on the equilibrium of forces and compatibility of deformations were developed to predict the stresses and deformations of the beam in the linear and nonlinear regions. The predicted and measured results correlated well. The analytical models were used in a parametric study to investigate the effects of design variables such as, plate area, plate strength and stiffness, reinforcement ratio, etc., on the moment-curvature relationships of typical rectangular and T cross sections.

Abstract (sommario):
With the rise in interest in the field of grid and cloud computing, it is becoming increasingly necessary for the grid to be easily maintainable. This maintenance of the grid and grid services can be made easier by using an automated system to monitor and repair the grid as necessary. We propose a novel system to perform automated monitoring and repair of grid systems. To the best of our knowledge, no such systems exist. The results show that certain faults can be easily detected and repaired.

Abstract (sommario):
Extensive fleet operational experience now exists for the LM2500 marine gas turbine engine. Based upon this experience, this engine is susceptible to a number of wear-out modes caused by excessive operational stresses. It has been found that the principal factors responsible are engine power profile, aero-dynamic disturbances and self-generated vibration. The failures involve both external and internal engine components. External components which fail can readily be replaced or repaired. Rapid replacement or repair has had a positive impact on engine availability. For failed internal engine components, however, depot repair was originally planned. High repair costs and operational impact from depletion of rotable pool spares accelerated the need for in-place repairs. A number of such repairs have been developed and validated, resulting in substantial cost savings and increased engine availability. Special repairs have also been developed to reduce the operational stresses themselves.

Abstract (sommario):
Note the PRCI Pipeline Repair Manual 2021 Edition is now available and supersedes this edition. The 2021 Edition is available here. Technology advancements in materials, techniques, new products, procedures, etc. offer pipeline companies the opportunity to extend the safe life of assets in place. A comprehensive Pipeline Repair Manual is needed to address these new advances, provide engineering guidance to choose appropriate repair techniques for specific defects in pipelines. This new updated Pipeline Repair Manual provides guidance to pipeline operators as they: (1) choose appropriate repair techniques for specific defects in in-service pipelines; (2) develop or enhance their own procedures and/or manuals for pipeline repairs; (3) or train or qualify maintenance personnel. The manual presents a catalog of known pipeline repair techniques, and discusses the various types of pipeline defects that lend themselves to being repaired while in-service. A matrix is provided to match defects in need of repair with appropriate repair methods. In addition defect assessment methods are presented as are safety considerations related to making in-service repairs. The manual is divided into the following major sections: (1) Response to the discovery of an anomaly or defect - this section presents safety issues and defines critical information that is required to make an appropriate repair response. (2) Pipeline repair methods - this section describes the known methods of repairing in-service pipelines. (3) Appropriate repairs for various types of defects - this section matches the types of defects that are likely to be encountered in in-service pipelines with appropriate repair methods. (4) Repair methods in Europe - this section was added after a review of the draft by a committee of pipeline repair specialists from several European pipeline operators who are members of the Group Europeene de Recherches Gazieres (GERG). It contains suggestions made by the committee to enhance the substance of this manual and to inform readers concerning European practices. (5) Guidelines for repair procedures - this section presents a model procedure, which a pipeline operator may use to create, enhance, or evaluate repair procedures. This document was formerly known as 'Updated Pipeline Repair Manual Revision 6'
