Despite the general view that Berber was the only important substratum for Maghrebi Arabic, Moroccan Arabic (MA) took shape in the 7th–8th centuries AD in Roman cities in which Late Latin (LL) was spoken. The occupation of Morocco was far more tenuous than in other areas conquered during the Arab expansion. Rapid language shift from LL to a contact Arabic introduced by eastern Berber troops left telltale signs in phonology and in morphological simplification. Archaic MA D-possessives di, d- and dyal- reflect Latin dē and pronominal combinations thereof, and must be dated to the language-shift period. Recognition of this has been delayed by hesitation to recognize the LL/MA relationship and by Arabic-internal explanations of D-possessives that must be rejected in light of what we now know about Maghrebi Arabic dialects.

One of the striking features of the literary culture of the modern Maghreb is the profusion of works that undertake to identify the essential features of the region – exercises in definition that almost always emphasize plurality. Philosophers, social scientists, and literary writers have highlighted the Maghreb's multilingualism – the coexistence of different forms of Arabic, Tamazight, French, and Spanish – the varied and hybrid cultural legacies of conquest and colonialism, and the effects of the region's geographical proximity to other parts of Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. It would be hard to find a more ubiquitous theme of francophone Maghrebi literature than cultural diversity, and the subject is by no means absent from Arabic-language literature. This preoccupation with plurality can be seen as a response to a history of colonization and decolonization with particular ideological features. In their efforts to build “l'Algérie française,” the French colonial authorities suppressed Arabic as a language of culture and government. In response, anticolonial nationalists called for the replacement of French with Arabic. “Islam is my religion, Arabic is my language, Algeria is my nation” – the catchphrase of Abdelhamid Ben Badis's Jam'iyat al-'Ulama [Association of Muslim Ulema], an Islamic reform movement of the 1930s and 1940s – later became a slogan of the nationalist movement, the Front de libération nationale (FLN) [National Liberation Front]. Since the 1980s, a similar call to restore Arabic and eliminate French has been issued by the Islamist opposition to the corrupt and undemocratic FLN government and at times by officials in that same government seeking to restore their legitimacy. In emphasizing linguistic and cultural diversity, writers and scholars have tried to tender an alternative to these recurrent efforts to delimit the region's identity.

Abstract (sommario):

This paper presents an analytic study showing that it is entirely possible to analyze the sentiment of an Arabic dialect without constructing any resources. The idea of this work is to use the resources dedicated to a given dialect \textit{X} for analyzing the sentiment of another dialect \textit{Y}. The unique condition is to have \textit{X} and \textit{Y} in the same category of dialects. We apply this idea on Algerian dialect, which is a Maghrebi Arabic dialect that suffers from limited available tools and other handling resources required for automatic sentiment analysis. To do this analysis, we rely on Maghrebi dialect resources and two manually annotated sentiment corpus for respectively Tunisian and Moroccan dialect. We also use a large corpus for Maghrebi dialect. We use a state-of-the-art system and propose a new deep learning architecture for automatically classify the sentiment of Arabic dialect (Algerian dialect). Experimental results show that F1-score is up to 83% and it is achieved by Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) with Tunisian corpus and with Long short-term memory (LSTM) with the combination of Tunisian and Moroccan. An improvement of 15% compared to its closest competitor was observed through this study. Ongoing work is aimed at manually constructing an annotated sentiment corpus for Algerian dialect and comparing the results

The Linguistic Situation in The Maghreb: The Visibility of Languages through Tunisia as a Case Study The written form of language is a wide field and so here the "visibility of languages" is limited to the aspect that languages are perceptible to the eyes, namely on signs. The relevant examples all come from the Maghrebi country of Tunisia. These are the undirectedly acquired languages, which primarily include Tunisian Arabic, Derya, and to a much lesser extent the Berber languages, Jewish Arabic and French, so that in Tunisia has a homogeneous language situation. In addition, there are the languages that are acquired in a controlled manner, which primarily includes written Arabic, the Fusha. This range of languages is supplemented by the foreign languages French and English as compulsory subjects. Chinese, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish is offered as a compulsory elective in the modern language branch. Thanks to its rich historical heritage and its educational system, Tunisia is linguistically diverse and the signs reflect this wealth in many different ways.

Abstract The present paper discusses from a diachronic standpoint the realizations of Old Arabic */ǧ/ in the various Maghrebi dialects. It covers the following issues: reflexes of Old Arabic */ǧ/, phonetically conditioned shifts involving /ǧ/ and /ž/, discussion and conclusions. The remaining part of the study is devoted to a presentation and discussion of evidences suggesting that affricate /ǧ/ was formerly more widespread among first-layer dialects.

Abstract The present paper aims at revisiting the question of interdental fricatives in the so-called pre-Hilali Arabic dialects, that is the descendants of the first stage of Arabicization in North Africa. It attempts to challenge, from a diachronic and comparative approach, the view that the absence of interdental fricatives—and their merger with dental stops—is a hallmark of pre-Hilali Arabic. On the basis of neglected data, we will provide evidence suggesting that interdental phonemes occur or did occur in some of the Arabic dialects which resulted from the early Muslim conquest of North Africa.

Résumé: Cet article examine le rôle de l'amazighité dans l'enrichissement de notre compréhension du multilinguisme dans la littérature maghrébine, en se concentrant sur deux oeuvres marocaines : Tawarguit d imik (2011) de Mohamed Akounad et Il était une fois un vieux couple heureux (2002) de Mohamed Khaïr-Eddine. Malgré la diversité linguistique du Maghreb, la littérature de la région est majoritairement exprimée en arabe et en français, marginalisant souvent les langues indigènes telles que le tamazight et le darija. Dans le roman d'Akounad, le personnage de Ssi Brahim, un imam, choisit de prêcher en tamazight plutôt qu'en arabe classique, ce qui renforce sa communauté et inclut des groupes marginalisés comme les femmes, remettant en question les hiérarchies linguistiques et de genre établies dans l'espace religieux. Bien que rédigé en français, le roman de Khaïr-Eddine se concentre sur le personnage de Bouchaïb, qui insiste pour écrire sa poésie en tamazight, critiquant ainsi la tendance à traiter le tamazight comme un simple accessoire enrichissant les langues dominantes, une pratique qui risque de le réduire à un statut folklorisé et marchandisé. L'article soutient que l'expression de l'amazighité uniquement à travers les langues de l'Autre perpétue les hiérarchies linguistiques et marginalise le tamazight en tant que langue périphérique ou exotique. L'étude souligne l'importance non seulement d'encourager la production de littérature en tamazight, mais aussi de reconnaître et de valoriser les oeuvres maghrébines qui reflètent l'amazighité, même lorsqu'elles sont rédigées dans les langues de l'Autre. En plaidant pour une littérature maghrébine véritablement multilingue qui inclut le tamazight comme composante centrale, l'article appelle à une reconfiguration de l'espace littéraire afin de refléter pleinement la richesse linguistique et culturelle de la région. Abstract: This article examines the role of amazighité in enriching our understanding of multilingualism in Maghrebi literature, focusing on two Moroccan works: Tawarguit d imik (2011) by Mohamed Akounad and Il était une fois un vieux couple heureux (2002) by Mohamed Khaïr-Eddine. Despite the linguistic diversity of the Maghreb, literature from the region is predominantly expressed in Arabic and French, often marginalizing indigenous languages like tamazight and darija. In Akounad's novel, the character Ssi Brahim, an imam, chooses to preach in tamazight rather than classical Arabic, challenging established linguistic and gender hierarchies in the religious space. Although written in French, Khaïr-Eddine's novel centers on the character Bouchaïb, who insists on writing poetry in tamazight, thereby critiquing the tendency to treat tamazight as merely an accessory enriching dominant language, a practice that risks reducing it to a commodified, folklorized status. The article argues that expressing amazighité solely through languages of the Other perpetuates linguistic hierarchies and marginalizes tamazight as peripheral or exotic. The study underscores the importance of not only encouraging the production of literature in tamazight but also recognizing and valuing Maghrebi works that reflect amazighité , even when written in languages of the Other. By advocating for a truly multilingual Maghrebi literature that includes tamazight as a central component, the article calls for a reconfiguration of the Maghrebi literary space to fully reflect the region's linguistic and cultural richness.

Abstract The present paper provides a preliminary description of verbal negation in the two neighboring dialects of Mahdia and Chebba, belonging to the groups of Tunisian coastal village dialects. This dialectal group has been, so far, dramatically understudied, despite its importance for the dialectal geography and history of North African Arabic. Like most other varieties of Maghrebi Arabic, the dialects of Mahdia and Chebba underwent the so-called Jespersen’s cycle, consisting in the doubling of the original prefixal negation, in dialectal Arabic mā (Stage I), with a suffixal negative particle -š, resulting in the circumfixal negation mā … š (Stage II) and, eventually, in the loss of the prefixal mā (Stage III). With regard to Arabic, Stage III was so far undocumented in North Africa, with the exception of Maltese. This paper provides samples of the three different stages in the dialects under investigation and offers some hypotheses concerning the possible locus of innovation with regard to Tunisian, contributing to our knowledge of negation in North African Arabic.

Languages that allow free word order, such as Arabic dialects, are of significant difficulty for neural machine translation (NMT) because of many scarce words and the inefficiency of NMT systems to translate these words. Unknown Word (UNK) tokens represent the out-of-vocabulary words for the reason that NMT systems run with vocabulary that has fixed size. Scarce words are encoded completely as sequences of subword pieces employing the Word-Piece Model. This research paper introduces the first Transformer-based neural machine translation model for Arabic vernaculars that employs subword units. The proposed solution is based on the Transformer model that has been presented lately. The use of subword units and shared vocabulary within the Arabic dialect (the source language) and modern standard Arabic (the target language) enhances the behavior of the multi-head attention sublayers for the encoder by obtaining the overall dependencies between words of input sentence for Arabic vernacular. Experiments are carried out from Levantine Arabic vernacular (LEV) to modern standard Arabic (MSA) and Maghrebi Arabic vernacular (MAG) to MSA, Gulf–MSA, Nile–MSA, Iraqi Arabic (IRQ) to MSA translation tasks. Extensive experiments confirm that the suggested model adequately addresses the unknown word issue and boosts the quality of translation from Arabic vernaculars to Modern standard Arabic (MSA).

Cette thèse comble un vide dans le domaine de la dialectologie maghrébine, en proposant une description en synchronie de la phonologie et de la morphologie de l’arabe parlé à Kairouan, en Tunisie. Elle présente et analyse les résultats de plusieurs enquêtes de terrain. L’approche fonctionnaliste de cette thèse se base sur le modèle des études en dialectologie comparée les plus solides et consiste à analyser l’arabe kairouanais en le comparant à d’autres variétés d’arabe qui lui sont géographiquement et typologiquement proches. L'analyse variationniste des données linguistiques est également utilisée, prenant en compte les paramètres sociolinguistiques des locuteurs. Cette étude s’insère également dans le débat sur la réévaluation de la classification traditionnelle de l’arabe maghrébin. Dans le cadre de cette problématique, je remets en cause la validité de l’origine monogénétique kairounaise de l’arabe maghrébin de première couche et la définition des « parlers kairouanais » proposée par David Cohen. Afin de mieux cerner la démonstration linguistique, je m’intéresse aux événements historiques et sociaux majeurs qui ont accompagné le début des deux couches d’arabisation au Maghreb (VIIe - XIe siècle). En outre, j’analyse le développement diachronique et la distribution synchronique de trois isoglosses de l’arabe de première couche dans des variétés anciennes et contemporaines au Maghreb. En somme, la description grammaticale de l’arabe kairouanais, la focalisation socio-historique sur le passé de la ville, ainsi que la comparaison diachronique et diatopique contribuent à montrer la faiblesse de l’origine monogénétique kairouanaise de l’arabe maghrébin de première couche
This dissertation provides a comprehensive description of the phonology and morphology of the Arabic variety spoken in the city of Kairouan (Tunisia). The phonological and morphological description results from the analysis of narrative texts and questionnaires I collected during field research. My description is based on the functionalism methodological approach commonly applied in the most significant studies of descriptive and comparative Maghrebi Arabic dialectology. This approach also includes comparative remarks on geographically and typologically related varieties of Arabic. Moreover, I embrace the variationist analysis based on different sociolinguistic parameters. Furthermore, this dissertation aims at contributing to the debate about the reassessment of the traditional classification of Maghrebi Arabic. It questions the validity of the monogenetic origin of first-layer Maghrebi Arabic from ancient Kairouani Arabic and David Cohen’s theory on the parlers kairouanais. In doing so, this study focuses on the major historical phases and social phenomena occurring in the Maghreb (7th - 11th centuries) in correspondence with the beginning of the two so-called waves of Arabization. From a comparative point of view, I analyze the diachronic development and the synchronic distribution of three isoglosses in first-layer Arabic across present-day and more ancient varieties. This socio-historical focus and diachronic and diatopic comparison of this study contribute to showing the weakness of the Kairouani monogenetic origin of first-layer Maghrebi

La premiere partie traite exclusivement des hommes de lettres et de leurs oeuvres, en tentant de les faires: connaitre academiquement. Quant a la deuxieme partie, elle essaie d'etudier l'ecrivain almohade et son public, et de chercher les rapports qui le liaient a son contexte historique, apres tout un apercu historique projectant li lumiere sur les contextes qui conditionnaient et l'ecrivain et son public. La troisieme et derniere partie est consacree exclusivement a l' etude des phenomenes et formes litteraires en cherchant a les expliquer souvent par les contextes historiques.

Les conceptions juridiques sur lesquelles repose l’Etat de droit au sein de cette aire géographique influent sur la détermination de la protection juridique des libertés fondamentales de l’Homme mais également sur la structure et l’organisation de l’Etat. Même si ce dernier se prévaut de sa vocation à garantir les droits fondamentaux, il semble échouer dans sa missions de protéger les libertés individuelles, en particulier celle relative à la liberté de religion. En outre, le religieux dispose d’une place telle que le jeu institutionnel s’en trouve entravé. L’accent est ensuite mis sur deux tendances contradictoires : la sécularisation progressive du droit à travers le renforcement du rôle de la justice constitutionnelle et l’éveil de la société civile d’une part, et les raisons de la persistance de la dialogie Constitution-Religion d’autre part. Aujourd'hui, à l’heure des « Printemps arabes », ces deux référents se présentent comme une dialogie nécessaire ou évidente. Les Révolutions n’ont pas abouti à la consécration d’un modèle laïc et la place du religieux se trouve maintenue, voire renforcée
The dispute in the Arab world on the relationship between constitutional rights and freedom of religion has become increasingly passionate and virulent. Moreover, the relationship between these two positions is simultaneously a source of unification and conflict. To understand the logic of basing constitutionalisation on religious beliefs, this analysis seeks, firstly, to examine the Islamic judicial system, the objective being to substantiate the existence of Islamic constitutional theory; and to demonstrate the uncertainties that flow from its use in most Arab constitutional systems. The respective judicial concepts of each Arab state have a direct impact on both the protection of the fundamental human liberties and the structure and organisation of states. To the degree that governments propagate the concept of the rule of law, they appear to fail in fostering individual liberties, especially freedom of religion. Additionally, the scope given to the religious person at the core of constitutional texts in such that the very institution of fundamental liberties is hampered. Secondly, it is important to state the reasons for the uncertainties in Arab constitutional systems and their resulting impact. Emphasis is, therefore, given to two contradictory movements: on the one hand the progressive secularisation of law in reinforcing constitutional justice and the awakening of civil society; and on the other the persistent ambiguity on the relationship between constitutional rights and freedom of religion. Ultimately these developments lay the foundation to understanding the current judicial and political environment. At the time of the Arab Spring these two positions, constitution and religion, form the basis of a necessary and obvious dialogue: these uprisings have not led to the consecration of secular states, and the scope of the religious person has been maintained and perhaps even strengthened

Depuis une quinzaine d'annees, les relations algero-marocianes achoppensur la question de la devolution de l'ex-sahara espagnol. A ce contentieux officiel, s'ajoutent d'autres differends tout aussi importants: trace frontalier, cooperation economique (fer de gara djebilet), construction du maghreb. . . Prenant pretexte du non respect des principes de l'autodetermination et de l'intangibilite des frontieres, l'algerie accueille le front polisario a tindouf, l'encadre et lui fonrnit armes, argent et mobilise son appareil diplomatique pour precher la cause sahraouie a travers le monde. En plus de la tension sur le terrain, l'antagonisme entre rabat et alger se traduit par une crise sans precedent de l'o. U. A. , puis divise ensuite les etats du maghreb. La detente internationale, le poids des problemes internes et les differentes mediations de pays amis, amenent le roi hassan ii et le president chadli a se rencontrer afin de se concerter. En 1983 la premiere tentative connait l'echec. Ce n'est qu'a la suite du second sommet (mai 1987) que la normalisation intervient. Bien qu'elle permet de relancer la cooperation bilaterale et de renouer avec l'ideal unitaire maghrebin, la reprise des relations diplomatiques intervenue en juin 1988, ne reussit pas encore a sumonter les clivages politiques subsistent entre les deux pays et notamment celui de la crise sahariens
Since fiften vears, the algerian-maroccan relations strumble over the problem of the devolution of the ex-spanish saharan territory. On top of this official dispute, there are many other disputes that face the relations between algier and rabat: the line border the economical cooperation (over gara djebilet), the union of the maghreb states. . . On the pretext of defending the principles of self-determination and inviolability of frontiers, algeria welcomed the polisario front at tindouf. The guerilleros receive military and diplomatical support from algier. Successively the a. U. O. And the maghreb states sufferd from the dispute over the western saharan. The relaxation in international affairs the weight of internal difficulties and the mediations from some countries helped king hassan ii and president chadli to meet. The first attempt, in 1983, failed. A second meeting, on may 1987, was necessary in order to make normalization possible. Although the normalization between rabat and algier stimulated economical cooperation and the ideal of the maghreb unity, it doesn't give an issue to political disputes yet. This thesis aims to study the origin and development of Maghribī round scripts, i.e. the highly distinctive writing styles employed in the Arabic manuscripts and documents produced from the 4th/10th century onwards in the western Islamic world, and more specifically in the Iberian Peninsula, North-West Africa, and the Balearic Islands. In order to reconstruct the activity of Maghribī calligraphers, copyists, and secretaries, and to follow the development of their practices, the present work lists and discusses the earliest dated material written in Maghribī scripts, in chronological order: 123 non-Quranic manuscripts, 25 Quranic codices and fragments, nine chancery documents, and two private contracts, all of which produced between 270/883 and 600/1204. The palaeographic analysis of the scripts has made it possible to distinguish between different Maghribī sub-styles and 'schools' of calligraphy, some of which have been given a new definition. A particular attention has been devoted to the geographical and historical context in which these scripts developed - i.e. Umayyad al-Andalus - and to the cultural, and even ideological implications of their use and diffusion throughout North-West Africa. Codicological aspects have also been taken into consideration, such as the quality of scribal supports, the composition of quires and gatherings, the methods of ruling the pages, the choice of inks and pigments of different types, the style and techniques of illumination. Where possible, the autoptic study of the material has been combined with the information offered by primary sources of various kinds (historical treatises, biographical dictionaries, handbooks for notaries ...) so as to present a comprehensive picture of the Maghribī scribal tradition until the Almohad period. The resulting image is that of a calligraphic culture as rich and sophisticated as the eastern one, which constituted a key element in the creation and promulgation of the Andalusī identity throughout the Mediterranean, but whose formative process and full aesthetic range were still poorly understood.

Die Staatsexamensarbeit befasst sich sowohl mit den Potentialen, als auch mit den möglichen Problemen des Desertec Projekts im französischsprachigen Norden Afrikas. Der Autor beleuchtet im ersten Teil die Potentiale des Projekts für von einem kultur-, politik-, sozialwissenschaftlichen Standpunkt. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit setzt sich der Autor intensiv mit der Frage nach der Kritik der neokolonialistischen Bestrebungen der Projektinitiatoren auseinander. Darüber hinaus beleuchtet er die Kommunikationsstrategie der Desertec Foundation näher und legt das interkulturelle Potential dieses Unterfangens dar. Daran schließt sich ein Überblick über die französischen, marokkansichen und deutschen Pressestimmen im Zeitraum von 2009 - 2012 zum Desertec Projekt an. Den Abschluss bildet eine Standortanalyse mit dem Fokus auf den von der AQIM ausgehenden Terrorismus und der Korruption vor Ort
The author of the exam thesis „Das Desertec Projekt und der Arabisch-Frankophone Maghreb am Beispiel Marokko“ discusses various important cultural aspects of the implementation of the mega-project Desertec in the francophone area of North Africa. In this thesis, the author puts the advantages presented by the Desertec Foundation into perspective and discusses possible impediments from a cultural point of view. The first part of the paper covers the topics of solar powered drinking water abstraction as a possibility to meet local needs and Desertec as a promoter of social stability and economic development in the MENA region. The second part is concerned with a discussion of alleged neo-colonial intentions of the companies supporting the Desertec project as well as its management. Moreover, the author discusses the communication strategy of the project and the influence of intercultural aspects on the success of the Desertec vision. Furthermore, the thesis contains a review on press reactions on the topic in the period of 2009 – 2012 and a brief location study discussing the topic of terrorism and corruption in the Maghreb region. The author comes to the conclusion that a mega-project like Desertec cannot solely rely on economic facts and engineering ingenuity, but has to take all cultural points into account and make use of the synergetic effect in order to lead this project to success

Expression de la quintessence de leurs pensées, la confrontation portait le titre de : Dialogue entre le Machreq et le Maghreb, et tournait autour de l'identitié et de l'unité arabes. Intervenant dans un contexte arabe et international de bouleversements politique, stratégique et idéologique, cette confrontation a repris cette lancinante et chronique question de la modernité et de la tradition, de l'authenticité et de l'inauthenticité. L'analyse sémantique des textes de Hanafi et de Jabiri, avec des différences, certes, montre leur caractère idéologique participant d'une volonté de maintenir une sorte de discours d'orthodoxie sur les sociétés arabes. This work is a corpus based semiotic description of a text resulting of a confrontation between two well known Arab scholars Hassan Hanafi (Egyptian) and Mohammed Abid Al-Jabiri (Marocain), all two teeachers of philosophy and authors of many books. Expressing the quintessence of their thinkings this confrontation was entitled Dialogue between the Machreq and the Maghreb and was all about the arab unity and identity. Taking place in an arab and world context of political, strategical as well as ideological upheavals, this confrontation tackled mainly the throbbing and chronic question of modernity and tradition, authenticity and inauthenticity. The semantic analysis of certain texts of Hanafi and Jabiri displays, even though with some differences, their ideological nature that derives from their will to maintain a sort of orthodoxy discourse about the arab societies. A democratization perspective in the arab societies makes necessary the opening of an issue of the individual subject and the recognition of ethnic, political and ideological diversity

Les conceptions juridiques sur lesquelles repose l’État de droit au sein de cette aire géographique influent sur la détermination de la protection juridique des libertés fondamentales de l’Homme mais également sur la structure et l’organisation de l’État. Même si ce dernier se prévaut de sa vocation à garantir les droits fondamentaux, il semble échouer dans sa mission de protéger les libertés individuelles, en particulier celle relative à la liberté de religion. En outre, le religieux dispose d’une place telle que le jeu institutionnel s’en trouve entravé. L’accent est ensuite mis sur deux tendances contradictoires : la sécularisation progressive du droit à travers le renforcement du rôle de la justice constitutionnelle et l’éveil de la société civile d’une part, et les raisons de la persistance de la dialogue Constitution-Religion d’autre part. Aujourd'hui, à l’heure des « Printemps arabes », ces deux référents se présentent comme une dialogue nécessaire ou évidente. The dispute in the Arab world on the relationship between constitutional rights and freedom of religion has become increasingly passionate and virulent. Moreover, the relationship between these two positions is simultaneously a source of unification and conflict. To understand the logic of basing constitutionalisation on religious beliefs, this analysis seeks, firstly, to examine the Islamic judicial system, the objective being to substantiate the existence of Islamic constitutional theory; and to demonstrate the uncertainties that flow from its use in most Arab constitutional systems. The respective judicial concepts of each Arab state have a direct impact on both the protection of the fundamental human liberties and the structure and organisation of states. To the degree that governments propagate the concept of the rule of law, they appear to fail in fostering individual liberties, especially freedom of religion. Additionally, the scope given to the religious person at the core of constitutional texts in such that the very institution of fundamental liberties is hampered. Secondly, it is important to state the reasons for the uncertainties in Arab constitutional systems and their resulting impact. Emphasis is, therefore, given to two contradictory movements: on the one hand the progressive secularisation of law in reinforcing constitutional justice and the awakening of civil society; and on the other the persistent ambiguity on the relationship between constitutional rights and freedom of religion. Ultimately these developments lay the foundation to understanding the current judicial and political environment. At the time of the Arab Spring these two positions, constitution and religion, form the basis of a necessary and obvious dialogue: these uprisings have not led to the consecration of secular states, and the scope of the religious person has been maintained and perhaps even strengthened

The introductory chapter comprises several sub-sections outlining the theoretical and methodological background of the study. After a brief description of the history of the Jewish community of Gabes, an overview of its Arabic dialect is provided. Building on various phonological and morphological isoglosses, the argument is presented that this dialect is a sedentary variety that originated in the first wave of Arabisation of the Maghreb in the seventh century CE. Currently, due to the process of language obsolescence, this dialect is on the brink of extinction. The subsequent section addresses existing scholarship on North African Arabic and its challenges, with a particular emphasis on the scarcity of data from provincial cities and the lack of syntactic studies in the field of spoken Judaeo-Arabic. Following this, the next section seeks to explore the linguistic landscape in pre-Islamic North Africa. Given that Jewish Gabes belongs to the group of first-wave dialects, it is reasonable to search in it for traces of languages spoken in the region before the seventh century CE. The final section elucidates the methodology and transcription system used in the study.

Abstract (sommario):

In this article, we tackle the issue of sentiment analysis in three Maghrebi dialects used in social networks. More precisely, we are interested by analysing sentiments in Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian corpora. To do this, we built automatically three lexicons of sentiments, one for each dialect. Each lexicon is composed of words with their polarities, a dialect word could be written in Arabic or in Latin scripts. These lexicons may include French or English words as well as words in Arabic dialect and standard Arabic. The semantic orientation of a word represented by an embedding vector is determined automatically by calculating its distance with several embedding seed words. The embedding vectors are trained on three large corpora collected from YouTube. The proposed approach is evaluated by using few existing annotated corpora in Tunisian and Moroccan dialects. For the Algerian dialect, in addition to a small corpus we found in the literature, we collected and annotated one composed of 10k comments extracted from Youtube. This corpus represents a valuable resource which is proposed for free.
