This thesis, which comes within the research focusing on the Spanish elites of the 18th century, attempts to show the part played by the military engineers in the scientific and cultural revival of the century. After introducing the historical framework in which these men lived, as a new dynasty came to power in Spain, the text highlights the way this army corps was governed while setting forth its social profile. This study endeavours to emphasise the culture of these men in relation with the scientific and intellectual evolution of their country, as well as their academic education as the first step in their cultural background. Then, it is from a precise analysis of the book collections to be found in property surveys that we can derive what kind of books theses men read. The importance of books- analysed from a formal point of view as well as in their content - allows to perceive how this army corps was different from other enlightened elites and what extent the European Enlightenment was to have an influence upon it. The analysis of the languages in which the books found in collections were edited, but also the books published by the military engineers themselves, help to complete the study of their culture and to show their role not only in the military but also in the cultural field - to the advantage of Spain. Finally, the culture of everyday life (clothing, professional objects, pictures) permits to place these men in the society of their time in a more accurate way

The omnipresence of' Antiquity in XVIIIth century Europe naturally led the men of the Enlightenment to draw references in that familiar mindset in order to think about war and power. After the peace of Utrecht the thinking on war focused on maintaining the European balance of power. Regarding power and relations between States, the Ancient reference was then mainly called upon as a counter-model. Still, at a time when most battles were indecisive, Antiquity gained the model status when it was used to help restore battlefield maneuverability, and even more when the military theoretical debate shifted into the political field, prior to war proper. Ancient Republics suddenly became inevitable references and at the end of the century, Antiquity was mainly called upon by the men of the Enlightenment in order to provide a meeting ground between political and military powers. The figure of the citizen-soldier then rose, based on the figure of the virtuous legionary of the Early Roman Republic

This dissertation studies the role of François-Jean de Chastellux in the spread of enlightened ideas and practices in the Atlantic world between 1780 and 1788, his departure from France to America until his death. Our research covers much of his life before this "Atlantic period", to examine the origins of his transatlantic exchanges. As a result, we have written a biography of Chastellux and made use of tools of the theory of cultural transfers. We have had access to the private, unpublished, archive of Chastellux, which contains over 4000 folios. Based on this material, we are able to demonstrate that he was an example of a soldier-philosopher. Because of his family background, he became familiar with Enlightenment thinking. Thereafter, when entering the French army, he applied several Enlightenment ideas within his own regiment during and after the Seven Years War, and thus represented the "Military Enlightenment". In parallel, he evolved into a man of letters and was elected to the Académie Française. He conceived his mission in life as the duty to disseminate enlightened ideas and practices throughout his network, composed of members of the French court, the army and philosophers. In 1780, during the American War of Independence, he served as a major general. As a soldier-philosopher, he was in a position to accomplish his mission in America. After the war, back in Paris, the now marquis Chastellux stayed in touch with Americans. By his correspondence and publications Chastellux played a role as a bridge between France and America, until he died, in 1788

This thesis studies the integral work of Jacques-Antoine de Révéroni Saint-Cyr (1767-1829), a military engineer and writer, at the breast of literary production of the French Revolution and Empire, encompassing literature, history of sciences and music. Historical, thematic and hermeneutical, this critical study analyses Reveroni’s imagery at the turning point of the age of enlightenment which includes essays about military art, fine arts and European equilibrium, theatrical production (comic operas and comedies) and novels. This variety of genres constructs an “imagery complexus” divided between heart and reason, mechanic and sensibility, serenity and anxiety, linked to a key paradigma between the rationalist heritage of the philosophy of enlightenment and an aesthetic coloured with romanticism

Ivorian constitutional justice, in its current form, is the fruit of the democratization movement launched on the continent from the 1990s. But if elsewhere the exercise of constitutional review immediately became an essential instrument in the effectiveness of the Constitution and the advent of the rule of law, in Côte d'Ivoire, the guarantee of the the Constitution’s supremacy has evolved continuously at an oscillatory rhythm. The constitutionality check is first expressed through a strategy of small steps. The constitutional judge's choice of a narrow interpretation of his attributions produces a daring case law geared towards legitimizing the executive power and its governance. Subsequently, with the advent of the second Republic from the year 2000, the constitutional jurisdiction is relatively more active. But despite the extension of the right of referral to citizens through the preliminary question, constitutional justice remains insensitive to the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms. Its dynamism manifests itself especially when the Constitution is confronted to the Political Agreements, mobilized for the resolution of the military political crisis. The office of the constitutional judge is then revealed as the defense of the constitutional order in danger or the regime embodying it. Here again there is the strong irradiation of the executive power in an unbalanced political system converging, like rivers in the river, all the institutions in the sense of the majesty of the constitutional Pontiff. Moreover, the preponderance of electoral disputes and the crises it provokes, annihilates, almost systematically, the progress of the case law that can give credibility to constitutional justice. In this context, the guarantee of the supremacy of the Constitution remains at an embryonic stage, marked by the seal of precariousness imposed by perverted constitutional practices and chronic political instability

The objective of this thesis is to achieve an active skin for the camouflage of a land vehicle based on cholesteric liquid crystal technology. After analysis of the environment, a texture is applied on the LCDs to reduce the visual and thermal signature of the vehicle. The work consisted of proposing a trichrome liquid crystal device to obtain the colorimetry defined by the specifications. The problems of temperature resistance, specular reflection, gray scale, reflectivity levels, reduction of applied voltages were discussed during this thesis. The proposed technology enabled to realization of a demonstrator on a remote controlledrobot that was presented at Eurosatory 2018 on the stand of the Ministry of the Armed Forces. Work has also been started on the development of optical modulators in the infrared, based on cholesteric liquid crystals, in order to modulate the reflectivity and thus to be able to limit the thermal signature of the vehicle. Several tracks have been tested and proposed
