Abstract (sommario):
Forest resources are one of the most important resources which men are survival of. We studied sustainable development tactics of regional forest resources . Volume model, describing the growing process of a tree, was built to establish the relationship between the age of grown up and the age of grow stagnation; also 1-D dynamic discrete model was established, considering the characteristic of number of trees in different ages in the condition that there is only a single kind of tree in the forest firstly; then multidimensional dynamic discrete model was formulated, providing the best felling policy that can meet lumber demand and have better age of stand structure. The simulation results show that the age of stand structure finally reach steadiness in one million hectares. Regional forest achieve sustainable development.

Abstract (sommario):
On 16 June 1837, at a little after six o'clock in the morning, a train of cars carrying lumber and gravel and crowded with twenty or more Irish track laborers and other workmen left the Boston depot of the Boston & Worcester Railroad Corporation bound for Worcester. About four miles out, just after the train had passed the City Mills and was nearing the Brookline road, a wheel on one of the cars broke. The train was thrown from the tracks. Two men were killed and several others severely injured.Among the injured was a man named Gilham Barnes, engaged by the Corporation about two weeks before to carry out maintenance work on several bridges between Boston and Worcester. On the previous day, Barnes, his brother Luther, and one of the men who worked with them had ridden the same train (an unscheduled track maintenance train known to the corporation as the “gravel” train) as far as the Arsenal bridge, which carried the railroad over the Watertown road in Brighton, to deliver materials and tools. On the morning of the sixteenth, Barnes sent the others by wagon via the Mill Dam toll road to begin work on the Arsenal bridge while he made arrangements with the conductor of the gravel train for additional materials to be carried to the Worcester bridge. Barnes intended, it would seem, to ride the gravel train as far as the Arsenal bridge where he would jump off and join his workmen. “We saw the train going out just after we paid [the] toll,” Luther Barnes later recounted. “Then near City Mills we saw shingles &c all about. I saw my brother running towards us. He waved his hat twice. And he held up his arm and I saw blood and flesh.”

Abstract (sommario):
In August 1919, a settlement house worker in Columbus, Ohio, filed a complaint in juvenile court against a seven-year-old girl whom I will call “Marie.” The complaint read, “Marie runs the streets continually. She is very irregular in her attendance at school, and is as dirty as a pig. She has been found in a lumber yard with a negro, and it was alleged by her associates that he raped her there. She goes into stores and begs.” According to the surviving records, Marie's “truancies from home” alerted settlement workers to the case. As a young child she reportedly began staying out late at night and loitering in the company of men and boys, and was threatened with being put out of the house when she was found alone with the African American man. By 1928, after Marie became an unwed mother at the age of sixteen, and had spent nine years in and out of child welfare institutions, a summary report contained the interesting typographical error that Marie's young life had strayed a distance of “six blacks from home.” As incidental as slipping “blocks” into “blacks” may have been in one sense, it captured a powerful truth. Marie violated key boundaries of sexual, gender, and racial purity that made a woman a candidate for respectable motherhood, and she paid dearly for these transgressions.

Abstract (sommario):
Pain in the back is the most common of all chronic pain disorders. Back pain and sciatica, or leg pain originating from injury to or pressure on the sciatic nerve, are major causes of disability in adults, occurring in 15% to 20% of the working-age population annually and 70% to 90% of adults at some point in their lives. Men and women are affected equally. The study was conducted prospectively in 60 patients of 18 to 60 years of age with documented chronic low back pain with sciatica. Thirty patients were treated in group-A with conservative treatment (NSAID+ therapeutic exercises+ superficial thermotherapy and ADL instruction) plus epidural steroid injection and 30 samples were treated in group B with conservative treatment only. Epidural steroid injection treatment group is significantly improved than conservative treatment group (p<0.05). There was more improvement of pain in group –A than in Group B ( p= 0.007) and SLR was more increased in group –A than group-B (p=0.03). So, epidural steroid injection is a effective treatment for lumber rediculopathy especially in acute phase. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/medtoday.v26i1.21302 Medicine Today 2014 Vol.26(1): 09-11

Abstract (sommario):
Background. The matrilin, especially matrilin-3 (MATN3), are reported to play important roles in the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA). To explore the relationship between MATN3 SNP6 (rs8176070) and primary OA, we conducted a community-based case-control study.Methods. A total of 732 community residents aged 40–84 years participated in the community-based study in Northeast China. After taking physical and radiographic examinations, 420 of the residents were diagnosed OA (216 women and 204 men). The other 312 individuals without any symptoms of osteoarthritis or signs in the radiographs (156 women and 156 men) were considered as healthy controls. After obtaining the DNA of case and control groups, genotypes of the MATN3 SNP6 were determined by polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction enzyme digestion. The numbers of patients with different OA subtypes were also calculated.Results. The distribution of genotypes and alleles of the MATN3 SNP6 between OA patients and controls was different significantly. The BB carrier tends to be associated with the increased osteoarthritis (P= 0.025, OR = 1.724, 95% CI = 1.071–2.77), especially the knee osteoarthritis (P= 0.021, OR = 2.402, 95% CI = 1.141–5.060) and lumber osteoarthritis (P= 0.020, OR = 1.880, 95% CI = 1.103–3.204). Bb carrier increased hand osteoarthritis risk (P= 0.002, OR = 5.380, 95% CI = 1.828–15.835). The B allele might have an effect on the increased knee osteoarthritis (P= 0.000, OR = 3.143, 95% CI = 2.283–4.328).Conclusion. These findings suggest that the MATN3 gene polymorphism might be associated with osteoarthritis in the Chinese Han population.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The uses of enslaved labor outside the context of staple crop production become evident through an examination of colonial Somerset County, the southernmost Maryland county on the Chesapeake Bay’s Eastern Shore. By the early eighteenth century, conditions in Somerset amounted to something of a paradox. The county’s planters were thoroughly embedded in the larger Chesapeake plantation society and replicated, insofar as they were able, the features of that society, including the use of slave labor and cultivation of tobacco. Yet poor soil conditions pushed residents to the edges of the tobacco economy. Unable to grow tobacco profitably, Somerset’s men and women identified alternative export commodities that were more suited to the resources at hand, including lumber, meat, and ships. In addition, many Somerset residents were active in an expanding coastwide trade that linked economic activity in the county to markets elsewhere in the colonies. Russo examines the allocation of enslaved labor in Somerset’s diversified economy using information drawn from judicial, tax, probate, and land records. Consideration of the evidence for Somerset County indicates that scholars need to devote more attention to the characteristics of slavery in anomalous areas that exist within broad staple-producing regions.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Team gym is a relatively new kind of competition in gymnastics with its origin from the Nordic countries. In Sweden it is the most practiced form of competitive gymnastics. Correlations have been found between altered trunk control and injuries in the extremities. Injury prevention testing is performed more frequently and tests requested for improving the training regimen. The purpose of this study was to describe a group of young team gymnasts regarding background variables, test results from Performance Base Matrix screening test and injury incidence during a period of seven months. Method: Nineteen team gymnasts, 7-9 year-old, were screened with the protocol Base Matrix for uncontrolled movement (weak links) under low and high load (threshold). Background data were collected on age, height, weight, dominant side, injuries in the recent year and the practice of other sports. The coaches were asked to register the number of injuries over a period of seven months. Results: The mean age was 8.8 years, BMI 16.1, 89% were right-handed and the average value of the Base Matrix score of 15 out of 50. Two injuries to the ankle and one on the neck reported totally from coaches and parents. Among the most apparent weak links were Low back / pelvis flexion at low load (58% of group) while the shoulder tilt at high load (63% of the group). Conclusion: The result indicates that the Base Matrix screening test is feasible to use in young gymnasts. More studies are needed to confirm the results. The result indicates that the shoulder especially under high load and the lower back especially under low load were the body segments that showed the most weak links. These parts of the body are the most important to take  into consideration in the training of the young team gymnasts.

Abstract (sommario):
Aim: In 2016, it became statutory in Sweden that larger companies must include information on sustainability in their annual report. Since larger organizations from the lumber industry in Sweden generally publish comprehensive and presentable reports, it would have been interesting to examine the incentives for this based on NIS. The purpose of the study is to investigate which isomorphic factors affect how a major company in the Swedish lumber industry designs its sustainability report.  Method: The study was conducted as a qualitative case study using an inductive approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 employees in a company in the Swedish lumber industry. The empirical material has been coded thematically in order to then be able to analyze it together with the analysis model from the theoretical framework. Result & Conclusions: The results of the study show that the examined company is affected by two isomorphic factors. Coercive isomorphism affects the company to a greater extent, while normative isomorphism affects the company to some extent. The mimetic isomorphism does not affect the company to the same extent. Contribution of the thesis: The theoretical contribution of the study is to increase the understanding of which isomorphic factors affect how a company in the lumber industry establish their sustainability report. The practical contribution is that companies must consider what the environment demands from the sustainability report in order to avoid losing their legitimacy. Suggestions for future research: Perform studies on several companies in the same industry and compare the results. Also include more contextual theories to investigate other factors that affect the appearance of the report. It would also have been interesting to study sustainability reports over time to investigate whether there is a change or not. Finally, it would be helpful to develop a comparison instrument for sustainability reports.

Abstract (sommario):
The clinical syndrome of neurogenic claudication due to lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a frequent source of pain in the lower back and extremities, impaired walking, and other forms of disability in the elderly. Although the incidence and prevalence of symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis have not been established, this condition is one of the most frequent indication for spinal surgery in patients older than 65 years of age. The treatment strategy depends on the severity of clinical symptom. After nonoperative treatement failure, surgical decompression should be considered. Aim of our prospective non-randomized clinical study was to analized short term results, efficancy, and complications after decompression and interspinous distraction surgery for severe multilevel LSS, and to analyzed difference in body and spine balance and movement using gait analysis,. Between March 2009 and March 2010 12 patients were selected for our study. 4 (33.3%) were female, 8 (66.7%) were male. Mean age at surgery was 63.50±15.23 (range 39-82) years. A mean of 2.50±0.80 (range 1-4) sympthomatic levels were treated for patient. Mean operative time was 90.42±18.40 minutes. In all procedures there was just light intraoperative blood loss. Mean hospitalization was 3.08±1.08 days. There was a mean return to walk after 1.83±0.58 days. Results of our short term prospective nonrandomized clinical study shown that decompressive recalibrage plus interspinous distraction is an effective and safe procedure for severe multilevel LSS. Patients had improvement both on sympthoms and on functionality and capacity. All patients were satisfied for the procedure, with a personal satisfaction rate (0-10) of 8.33±1.53. After surgery there were significant statistical improvement in VAS pain (pv=0.000), in ODI lumbar function (pv=0.000), and in SF36 health status (pv=0.000). Gait analysis showed an objective, and not just subjective, improvement in patient functionality and capacity. Trials proved a global improvement in spinal range of motion after surgery (pv=0.001 both on flexion-extension, and on lateral bending, and on axial rotation), with re-distribution of plantar anterior-posterior loading, and better plantar loading distribution on static trials, signs of improved balance. There were reduction of postures to prevent pain. There was a statistical improvement in walking capacity. It will be important to continue follow-up of patients, implementing sample, in order to verify long-term follow-up, real focus on treatment choice.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this PhD report is the investigation of electrical generators dedicated to an offshore wind turbine application. The main goal is to find optimal solutions in a vast research domain containing between eight and eleven optimization variables, while respecting a the imposed constraints. In order to achieve this goal, a multi-physics model was developed allowing the determination of the electromagnetic and temperature fields distributions in the selected topologies. Lumped models coupled to the interpolation functions were chosen as a solution offering a good computation time / precision ratio, thus taking into consideration the characteristics of the materials (thermal and magnetic). The developed model was coupled to a genetic optimization algorithm, NSGAII, allowing at first; the investigation of the necessary permanent magnets weight and the active parts one of two permanent magnet synchronous generator topologies where in the first the magnets are mounted in surfaces and in the second inserted in order to have flux concentration, three different powers have been investigated 5, 8 and 15 [MW]. Second, the integration of a magnetic gear in the wind energy conversion chain was studied using the same optimal approach previously used, while comparing the weight required of permanent magnets for this type of training with that of direct drive topologies (without gearbox)

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter 1 explores the origins of the Pacific Northwest timber industry in the early twentieth century, focusing on how employers’ efforts to control and contain labor radicalism shaped the demography and living circumstances of workers. Lumbermen believed that the best way to mollify organized labor was to recruit married men and families to work in their lumber camps and sawmills, and, in order to recruit families, the lumbermen constructed a vast network of company towns that significantly shaped the way people from timber-working communities understood and used the surrounding forests.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In the Sea Islands, having a regiment composed of local fugitives from slavery imparted one great advantage: they were able to provide intelligence about the countryside. The U.S. army was running low on lumber, and the white troops who had been sent out to find supplies had returned empty-handed. In January 1863, the First South Carolina had a chance to prove their worth on a foraging expedition. They went to the area from which their sergeant had escaped, up the St. Mary’s River on the border between Florida and Georgia. More than four hundred sixty men boarded three gunboats and made their way to St. Simon’s Island off the coast of Georgia. There, naval officers warned them about Confederate soldiers who were entrenched on the banks of the St. Mary’s River. While waiting for their third boat to arrive at the island, the men busied themselves by salvaging massive iron bars from abandoned Confederate forts. Some of the men had built these forts as conscripted slave labor, and Thomas Wentworth Higginson noted that they dismantled the bunkers and magazines with great enthusiasm. A raiding party suffered its first casualties in a confrontation with Confederate cavalry a short way up the river, but the men acquitted themselves well.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract As The Last Decade of the nineteenth century opened, King Glèlè died after a reign of more than forty years. Wherever they were, in Mobile, Havana, or Rio, the people he had sold away would have rejoiced had they known. Some of the deportees to Brazil had been freed only a year before in 1888. The men and women of African Town who had been taken from his barracoon in Ouidah were now in their forties and fifties, parents and grandparents of two generations who had never feared the king and the soldiers of Dahomey. To these young men and women, the most concrete expression of their parents’ ordeal was the face of an old white man down the road. After retiring from the river because the Negroes had become uppity, Timothy Meaher spent his time running the Bay City Lumber Company and the Mobile Steam Brick Works with his brothers and his sons, James and Augustine. They were still powerful and, as years went by, the family became even wealthier. But the brothers were getting old. Burns, the youngest, was the first to die, in 1880. James followed in February 1885. At seventy-four, he was hailed as one of the oldest steamboat men in the state. One of his pallbearers was none other than William Foster. About a year later Timothy developed paralysis and became housebound. On March 3, 1892, the Catholic priest of St. Francis Xavier Church near Three Mile Creek was summoned to his side. The father gave him the last sacraments, and the captain passed away. It was a peaceful death of old age, at eighty. Timothy Meaher’s passing made the news not only in Mobile, but as far away as New York.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Between seven and eight o’clock every Wednesday evening in October 1814 a gang of fisherwomen selling their wares at the door of a low alehouse called the Cock on the corner of Lumber Court and Grafton Street. Soho, would watch a group of around forty men arrive in twos and threes and make their way into the tap-room. Once inside, the men were welcomed by the publicans, Thomas and Susannah Harrison, who knew them to be members of a convivial debating club, and were sufficiently glad of their custom not to inquire too closely into their proceedings. In spite of Susannah’s pretended ignorance during later government interrogation, she must have known that these were followers of Thomas Spence, an eccentric pamphlet-seller and land-reformer who had been conducting political free-and-easies at the Cock for some years until his death in September 1814. Still, the government could hardly expect the Harrisons to have reported the Jacobinical views of the debating group when one of their own informers had earlier failed to do so. In an intelligence report of 1813 Arthur Kidder had thought their names not worth mentioning because they consisted mainly of ‘low tradesmen’ from around Grosvenor Market. Had he bothered, he might have been surprised at the response: many were well known to the government from the 1790s. They would certainly have recognised Thomas Evans. a Strand braces-maker, and the man who in October 1814 was to reconstitute Spence’s tavern following as the Society of Spencean Philanthropists.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Large-scale logging arrived in the 1890s, bringing railroads to facilitate transport. Ravensford, on land once owned by the Enloe family, and Smokemont, on Queen family land, developed into logging towns outfitted with saw mills, stores, schools, and lodging for loggers and their families. Though logging companies were organized and folded constantly, Ravensford Lumber Company and Champion Fibre Company were in business when the national park was authorized in 1925. Removing cut timber via narrow-gage railroads, tram roads, splash dams, steam-powered skidders, and steam-powered log loaders scarred the land, caused erosion, and left brush that created fire hazards. Massive amounts of timber were cut; between 1920 and 1925, Champion Fibre sawed nearly 117 million feet of timber at its Smokemont mill. Private landowners accepted logging and leased land to the companies for rail lines, building sites, and water access. Some local men worked as loggers and mill hands while maintaining their farms and supplying food to logging companies. After logging ended at Ravensford in 1927 and at Smokemont in 1931, residents of the towns left the area, and the Park Service offered farmers buyouts or lifetime leases for their land. Some families lost the money from land sales in banks that failed during the Depression.

Abstract (sommario):
Lumbar drainage has a major role in neurosurgical and neurocritical care procedures. Lumbar drain insertion is a simple and, when done well, low-risk procedure. A lumbar drain is often necessary in the management of perioperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, the most common use, but it may be beneficial for patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage and communicating hydrocephalus and for patients undergoing surgery involving the aorta with possible damage to the spinal cord. CSF removal optimizes spinal cord blood flow. This chapter describes lumbar drain insertion and some of the associated perils and pitfalls.

Abstract (sommario):
Acoustic emission (AE) source localization is an important part of monitoring the health of infrastructures. Though straightforward for isotropic materials, where analytical solutions exist, locating sources for anisotropic materials is complicated due to the angle-dependent wave velocity. The problem is even more intractable if heterogeneity involves. This is the case for laminated veneer lumber (LVL), an engineered wood material composed of multiple thin layers of wood, where defects such as knots, voids and discontinuity distributed randomly within the layers, greatly undermining the effectivity of common localization methods for man-made composites. To avoid the problem of heterogeneity, this work employed Gaussian process regression (GPR) to address the 2D AE source localization problem in an LVL plate. With four AE sensors attached at the corner of ROI in the plate, multiple pencil lead break tests were conducted to collect the difference of time of arrival (dTOA) between different sensors. The vector of dTOAs serves used as the input of the Gaussian process regression while the output is the source location. The marginal likelihood was maximized to achieve the optimal model parameters. The input vectors of a different combination of dTOA components were fed into the GPR model, both the predictions on grid points and off-grid points were analyzed. The high accuracy of the mean predictions over all possible combinations of dTOAs indicates such a method can well cope with 2D source localization problems in LVL structures.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A brief review is provided of characterization of the spine and of the various biomechanics models for the head/neck/spine system. This work was motivated by several biomechanics problems currently under consideration. First effort was to assess and discuss status of the leading intervertebral disc implants, and secondly to formulate numerous suitable dynamic models of biomechanical response, for example: for the “whiplash” problem, for a seated and helmeted crew member during a crash scenario, analysis of the High Altitude Low Opening Parachute (HALO) jump, and the effects of artillery fire on crews of combat vehicles . Therefore both quasi-static response and dynamic behavior were of interest. Characterization of the mechanical properties of the human body remains a challenge to biomedical engineers. The spine is a segmented structure containing \iscoelastic and kinematic elements. Efforts to characterize this complex structure have included in-vivo range of motion, head/neck response to forward, backward and lateral impact “jerks”, intervertebral disc pressure measurements, cadaveric whole spine tests, experiments on vertebrae and discs as well as isolated spinal ligament studies. With regard to crash survivability, a great deal of biodynamics research has been conducted and some general guidelines have been determined. But much more research is needed to provide accurate, proven figures. Whole body survival criteria have been derived based on test subjects seated with “correct” upright posture, and for single peak impacts. The magnitude, direction and duration of applied accelerative force have definite effects on human tolerance, as shown in a widely used data summary. For instance a spineward chest-back accelerative force of 45 G has been tolerated voluntarily when pulse duration is less than 0.044 seconds. However when the pulse duration increases to 0.2 seconds the tolerable force magnitude is 25 G. This paper reviews the readily available literature and concludes with parametric data for dynamic analysis of occupant response. Consideration of the available data indicates a wide range in mechanical properties of spinal ligaments, vertebrae and muscle groups. Coefficients of variance, cv, (standard deviation divided by mean value) were found to range as follows: Spinal ligament failure load cv’s from 30 to 85%, maximum deformation-35 to 72%, and stiffness from 33 to 84%; Vertebrae failure stresses from 44 to 64%, failure strains from 30 to 41%; Intervertebral discs with normal disc failure loads with c.v. of 10 % compared to 6% for degenerated discs, while cadaveric Spine failure loads variances were from 27 to 72%, and equivalent bilinear spine stiffness K1 had 40% and K2 62% variance. K1 = 101(40)[.40]**, K2 = 153(94)[.62] Newtons/mm. Range of motion and reflex times and neck strengths are observed to be influenced by sex and age. Both range of motion and neck strength decreased with aging. Coefficients of variance of male reflex times and strengths were found to be less variable than those of females, in the young and middle age groups. In general, male neck strengths were 1 1/2 to 2 times that of females. A recent study in Quebec of 5000 whiplash cases found that women are 50 % more likely than men to suffer whiplash injuries. The annual incidence of whiplash was found to be 86 per 100,000 for females compared with 54 for men. Mass moments of inertia, masses and associated centers of gravity and segment lengths are provided for a 50th percentile U.S. male aviator and for the “SOMLA” occupant man model. Regarding artificial intervertebral disc implants, review of the state-of-the-art indicates that no existing implants duplicate the full range of capabilities of the human disc or spine. As for crash survivable aircraft seats, civil aircraft, US Army helicopters and even NASA’s space shuttle crew seats could be significantly improved use of advanced materials, and properly design impact attenuation systems. The wide variation of spine strengths indicates the probabilistic design and analysis techniques should be applied. Finally it is evident that application of advanced composites and so-called smart materials must be based on an in-depth understanding of biomechanics and likely failure modes of the human body.

Abstract (sommario):
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an assistant for diagnosis in imaging exams has already proven to be effective, and is known as Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD). This paper evaluates the effectiveness of using a single network, YOLOv8x is the current state-of-the-art in the YOLO family, for lumbar spine detection and segmentation in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) exams. The network was used for detection, classification, and semantic segmentation, generating the masks over the vertebrae, which simplified the implementation and reduced the computational cost. Encouraging results were obtained using a dataset of 1,116 samples (images). The detection step achieved a mean average precision (mAP) of 0.989 at 50% intersection over union (IoU), mAP:50-95 of 0.886, recall of 0.98, and precision of 0.97. For bounding box marking, the following results were achieved: mAP of 0.978 at 50% IoU, mAP:50-95 of 0.882, recall of 0.971, and precision of 0.948. The semantic segmentation step achieved a mAP of 0.978 at 50% IoU, mAP:50-95 of 0.856, recall of 0.971, and precision of 0.948. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of using YOLOv8x for lumbar spine detection and segmentation in MRI exams.

Lateral resonance low-frequency vibrations responsible for the temporal changes of the skin surface relief arise at the muscular contraction. On exposure of the skin area over the contractional muscle to coherent radiation, the change of the speckle field intensity fluctuations occurs. The dynamics of this process is dictated by the dynamics of the object under study. So, making investigations on the spectral properties of the reflected scattered laser radiation, we can judge about the character of changing the skin surface itself.

Abstract (sommario):
This study measures select static and dynamic characteristics of the human mid-thoracic spine, and compares them to previously published data for the thoraco-lumbar and cervical regions. Little information is available on the acute injury threshold for mid-thoracic intervertebral discs. The aim of this study was to characterize injury thresholds for the thoracic spine. Non-destructive combined flexion-compression loading experiments were conducted on 5 fresh human T5-T10 functional spinal units (FSU) at quasi-static and physiologic strain rates, and the resulting load-deflection responses were converted into global and local stiffness. Subsequently, 29 thoracic vertebrae (T5-T10) from 6 spines were subjected to moderate to severe impact loading in flexion. The peak forces and pressures were not statistically different between the thoracic disc levels. However, the mean injury forces and pressures were statistically different from mean failure forces found in the literature for both the lumbar and cervical spine regions, with the thoracic values falling between the cervical and lumbar values.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Little is known about the impact of enzyme-inducing antiseizure drugs (EI-ASD) on the reduction of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in men with epilepsy (MWE). Objectives: To evaluate the BMD in MWE exposed to EI-ASDs (phenytoin, carbamazepine and phenobarbital) and its relationship with the duration of epilepsy. Methods: We evaluated BMD from 74 consecutive MWE (median age (range), 52.5 (25- 74) years) exposed to previous or current EI-ASDs, followed at UNICAMP-Brazil. Individuals were split into two groups (young-group, 31 individuals [25-49 years]; older group, 43 subjects, [50-74 years]). The BMD test evaluated t-score indexes from the femoral neck, whole femur and lumbar spine. Osteopenia was defined with t-score of - 1.0 to -2.4; osteoporosis, with T-scores lower than -2.5. Data were extracted from medical records. We analyzed data with SPSS22, performed chi-square tests for categorical variables and applied a partial correlation test (controlled for age) between BD scores and duration of epilepsy. Results: BMD was reduced in 49/74 men (66.2%). Both groups presented equivalent proportions of BMD abnormalities (p=0.087) (young-group [14/41 normal (45%), 12/31 osteopenia (39%), 5/31 osteoporosis (16%)]; older-group [11/43 normal (26%), 16/43 osteopenia (37%), 16/43 osteoporosis (37%)]. BMD did not correlate with the duration of disease or age of onset. Conclusion: BMD reduction is highly prevalent in MWE exposed to EI-ASD, including young individuals. Data suggest that exposure to EI-ASD may associate with early BMD reduction, which evolve to osteopenia and osteoporosis. BMD evaluation in MWE and appropriate treatment may be necessary to reduce fractures’ risk.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have an unnatural cognitive loss of aging and have an increased chance of developing Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Another factor that also increases this risk is the chronic inflammation caused by obesity, described by a body fat percentage (BF%) above healthy values. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate whether BF% in older adults with MCI correlates with AD biomarkers, such as total TAU protein and beta-amyloid. Methods: Twenty-one older adults with MCI were evaluated, 11 men and 10 women with a mean age of 66.3 (standard deviation, SD: ±5.88) years. The participants were submitted to the collection of 10 ml of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) via lumbar puncture and evaluated regarding the dosages of CSF total TAU protein and beta-amyloid protein using immunoenzymatic ELISA kits: INNOTEST® ß-AMYLOID (1-42), INNOTESTR h TAU Ag (Innogenetics, Gent, Belgium). They were also evaluated for BF% on a bioimpedance scale (Tanita® BC-108). Kendall’s tau correlation coefficient was applied for statistical analysis using the IBM SPSS Statistics 22 Software. Results: Both men and women had an average BF% that classified them with higher BF (men: 27% (SD: ±4.23) and women: 36.7% (SD: ±4.84). We found a weak positive correlation (τ = 0.360*) between BF% and Total TAU protein concentration and between BF% and beta-amyloid protein concentration (τ = 0.341*). Conclusion: Our results provide an insight into the possible influence of BF% on concentrations of biomarkers related to neurodegeneration in elderly people at increased risk of developing AD. The higher the BF%, the higher the protein concentration that reflects neuroinflammation. Studies with more individuals with MCI and with different degrees of obesity are suggested to contribute to the investigation of the relationship between AD biomarkers and BF%.

Abstract (sommario):
The study involved 15 men with movement disorders of central origin. We used percutaneous electrical stimulation of the spinal cord with the application of electrodes in the projection of the lumbar thickening, proprioceptive stimulation, and their combination. The data obtained showed the effectiveness of the combined course of percutaneous electrical stimulation of the spinal cord and proprioceptive stimulation on changes in the excitability of spinal locomotor neural networks. Key words: electrical stimulation, spinal cord, proprioceptive stimulation, rehabilitation, motor neuron.
