Abstract (sommario):
This paper revisits the H-Store/VoltDB concurrency control scheme for partitioned main-memory databases, which we term run-to-completion-single-thread (RCST), with an eye toward improving its poor performance on multi-partition (MP) workloads. The original scheme focused on maximizing single partition (SP) performance, producing results in millions of transactions per second on modest clusters, but at the expense of dismal MP performance. In this paper, we show that original RCST algorithms be made to dramatically improve MP performance with very limited impact on SP performance. That makes RCST superior to popular optimistic and pessimistic schemes without optimizations for batch execution, including OCC and 2PL, on a wide range of multi-node workloads with up to 60% throughput improvement. Our second contribution is to propose a multiplexed-execution-single-thread (MEST) algorithm based on RCST to amortize the network stalls from MP transactions over a batch of MP transactions. This scheme delivers up to 21X higher throughput for SP transactions and comparable MP throughput compared to state-of-the-art distributed deterministic concurrency control algorithms that are optimized for batch execution. Finally, our MEST scheme offers dramatically superior performance when straggler transactions are present in the workload. Our conclusion is that the H-Store/VoltDB concurrency control scheme can be dramatically improved and dominates state-of-the-art algorithms over a variety of MP workloads.

Abstract (sommario):
Lotus pattern is one of the traditional Chinese ornaments that dates back to the ancient times. During the rule of Wei and Jin dynasties, as well as Northern and Southern dynasties (222 – 589 AD), Buddhism has largely prevailed across the territory of the Great Plain of China. The forms, methods of expression, and meanings of the Chinese traditional ornaments that used the lotus pattern have changed under the influence of Buddhism. This article analyzes the peculiarities of synthesis of the Buddhist lotus ornament with the Chinese traditional culture, as well as the degree of impact of Buddhism upon the form, means of expression, and symbolic meaning of lotus patterns in the Chinese society. Having studied the scientific literature and research on the topic, the author analyzes he peculiarities of evolution of lotus pattern in China after the spread of Buddhism.  The key stages of the development of lotus ornament in Buddhist decoration are examined. The conclusion is made that Buddhism played a crucial role in transformation of characteristics and means of expression of the lotus ornament, as well as extensively complemented and changed the symbolic meaning of lotus in Chinese culture and people’s perception. Buddhism not only enriched the exterior and shape of the Chinese louts ornament, but made a significant contribution to its inscape.

Abstract (sommario):
Lotus was a tri-lingual quarterly brought out by the Afro-Asian Writers' Association. Initially titled Afro-Asian Writings, its inaugural edition was launched from Cairo in March 1968, in Arabic and English, followed by the French. By 1971, the trilingual quarterly acquired the name Lotus. Egypt, the Soviet Union, and the German Democratic Republic funded its production. The Arabic edition was printed in Cairo, and the English and French editions were printed in the German Democratic Republic. The Afro-Asian Writers' Association (AAWA) and its over-arching affiliate, the Afro-Asian People's Solidarity Organization (AAPSO), both had headquarters in Cairo. In 1978, President Anwar Sadat signed the Camp David Accords and the Permanent Bureau in Cairo was deactivated. Lotus moved to Beirut despite the raging Civil War, where it was was granted home and hospitality by the Union of Palestinian Writers. Its offices remained there until the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 when it once again relocated along with the Palestinian Liberation Organization to Tunis. The journal was discontinued in the late 1980s or early 1990s with the dismantling of the Soviet Union. The Permanent Bureau in Cairo was reinstated, but the journal was not as such reactivated. The project outlines a partial biography of a forgotten magazine from a bipolar world and its interrupted historical networks. It considers graphic and textual elements from the margins of the magazine for evidence of its trajectory.

Abstract (sommario):
The water lotus, genusNelumbo, contains two species, the sacred (Nelumbo nucifera) and American lotuses (Nelumbo lutea). Hundreds of flowering lotus cultivars are currently known. However, their classification is unclear. For the classification ofNelumbocultivars, in addition to 35 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers recently developed, we have developed 17 and 16 of newNelumboSSR markers from SSR-enriched genomic libraries and expressed sequence tag (EST) data, respectively. Out of these 68 SSRs, along with SSRs recently published by others, 52 showed clear polymorphisms in 98Nelumbosamples. A total of 300 alleles were observed, ranging from 2 to 11 alleles per locus, with an average of 5.77. Alleles specific for the American lotus-derived cultivars and a cluster of the American lotus-derived cultivars on a neighbour-joining tree confirmed genetic differences betweenN. luteaandN. nucifera. In addition, a possible differentiation between Chinese and Japanese cultivars was also suggested. Parentage analysis using the SSR markers confirmed four known parentages and predicted currently-unknown parentages of six cultivars. The present data have demonstrated that site-specific, co-dominant SSR markers enable more accurate classification, identification and comparison ofNelumbospecies.

Abstract (sommario):
This co-learning study with greater lotus (Lotus uliginosus Schukr.) and birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) was undertaken in the Perennial Pasture Zone of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, in conjunction with 14 community groups. The overall study combined a field experiment investigating grazing management practices with a co-learning study assessing the adaptation and potential applications of these 2 Lotus species. The present paper reports on the co-learning study. Seventeen sites were established on farms situated in the North Coast, Northern Tablelands, North West Slopes, South Coast and Southern Tablelands regions of NSW. Of the 17 co-learning sites, greater lotus or birdsfoot trefoil was established successfully and yielded useful findings at 9 of 10 sites in northern NSW and 3 of 7 sites in southern NSW. Establishment failure of greater lotus or birdsfoot trefoil at the 5 remaining sites was associated with severe drought conditions at, or shortly following, sowing. Results from across the 4 regions are collated to report on the adaptation of the 2 Lotus species to a diversity of climatic, edaphic and management applications. The study has confirmed that greater lotus is a valuable perennial legume for high rainfall coastal plains, coastal low-lands, coastal hill-country and niche tablelands environments where the average annual rainfall (AAR) exceeds 1000 mm. Significantly, the study shows that birdsfoot trefoil has important potential for low fertility acidic soils on tablelands and slopes where the AAR is 650–1000 mm, especially in northern NSW.

Abstract (sommario):
An efficient technology for preparing lotus fibres under microwave irradiation was developed. The lotus fibres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. Lotus fibres prepared are a kind of hollow fibres which are composed of a superfine fibre and an external shell. The effect of the treatment time with hydrogen peroxide under microwave irradiation on components, whiteness, moisture regain, removal rate of impurities, fineness, tensile strength and breaking elongation of lotus fibres was investigated. The results show that the cellulose content in lotus fibres increases with increase in treatment time. Whiteness and moisture regain of lotus fibres increase with increase in treatment time with hydrogen peroxide. The removal rate of impurities and the fineness of lotus fibres are improved after they are treated with hydrogen peroxide. Microwave irradiation is supposed to be an efficient method for producing lotus fibres.

Abstract (sommario):
The lotus is one of the aquatic plants that grow in the Lebak area and is widely used as food and medicine by the local community. The lotus growing environment determines its growth. The distribution of lotus plants has not been well identified. This study aims to determine the distribution of lotus mapping for environmental evaluation of lotus growing in Teluk Sinar Village, Sungai Pandan District, Hulu Sungai Utara Regency, South Kalimantan Province. The study used data collection methods with primary and secondary data survey techniques. Primary survey through delineation of lotus plant boundaries in the field. Field measurements were also carried out to identify the environmental variables of lotus growing. In addition, the interpretation of high-resolution satellite imagery and low-resolution satellite imagery for spectral analysis. The environmental variables for growing lotus include water depth, light penetration depth, water pH, and sediment pH. The results of the study revealed a map of the distribution of lotus and the growing environment of the lotus. The lotus distribution map was obtained from the results of overlaying several thematic maps, image interpretation, and field measurements using Arc View and Arc GIS software. The distribution of lotus plants can grow in an environment with a water depth of 35-121 cm, a light penetration depth of 23-100 cm, a water pH of 6.25-8.37, and a sediment pH of 3.33-4.69. The results of the Lotus Distribution Mapping and the Lotus growing environment obtained can be used as a basis for determining the potential distribution of Lotus in each region.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract LOTUS domains are helix-turn-helix protein folds identified in essential germline proteins and are conserved in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Despite originally predicted as an RNA binding domain, its molecular binding activity towards RNA and protein is controversial. In particular, the most conserved binding property for the LOTUS domain family remains unknown. Here, we uncovered an unexpected specific interaction of LOTUS domains with G-rich RNA sequences. Intriguingly, LOTUS domains exhibit high affinity to RNA G-quadruplex tertiary structures implicated in diverse cellular processes including piRNA biogenesis. This novel LOTUS domain-RNA interaction is conserved in bacteria, plants and animals, comprising the most ancient binding feature of the LOTUS domain family. By contrast, LOTUS domains do not preferentially interact with DNA G-quadruplexes. We further show that a subset of LOTUS domains display both RNA and protein binding activities. These findings identify the LOTUS domain as a specialized RNA binding domain across phyla and underscore the molecular mechanism underlying the function of LOTUS domain-containing proteins in RNA metabolism and regulation.

Abstract (sommario):
A study was undertaken in the Perennial Pasture Zone in New South Wales, Australia, to investigate the potential of lotus-based pastures (greater lotus, Lotus uliginosus Schukr.; birdsfoot trefoil, Lotus corniculatus L.) to improve grazing production. The study was based on a methodology that combined a grazing experiment to determine the effects of grazing management on lotus persistence, with a co-learning phase to assess the adaptation and applications of lotus across the high rainfall zone. The present paper reports on the grazing experiment that was replicated in 4 regions (North Coast, South Coast, Northern Tablelands, Southern Tablelands) and that included combinations of grazing strategy (summer rest, autumn rest, 14-day spell or 28-day spell), grazing intensity (low or high herbage mass), Lotus species and cultivar (L. uliginosus cvv. Grasslands Maku, Sharnae; L. corniculatus cv. Grasslands Goldie or ‘Spanish’ breeding line) and companion grass (sown or volunteer) treatments. The experiment provided results for the establishment and botanical presence of both Lotus species, and the expression of their persistence mechanisms in these 4 environments. Greater lotus cv. Grasslands Maku established best under coastal conditions and birdsfoot trefoil cv. Grasslands Goldie established best under tablelands conditions. The degree of nodulation of greater lotus cv. Sharnae and birdsfoot trefoil cv. Grasslands Goldie was less than nodulation of greater lotus cv. Grasslands Maku, but nodulation had no apparent effect on seedling vigour. The population density of all Lotus cultivars declined substantially at the North Coast, South Coast and Southern Tablelands sites during severe drought conditions. However, both birdsfoot trefoil cv. Grasslands Goldie and greater lotus cv. Grasslands Maku remained relatively stable at the Northern Tablelands site with greater lotus cv. Grasslands Maku maintaining 20–40% presence and birdsfoot trefoil cv. Grasslands Goldie retaining 30–50% presence, depending on time of year. In general, there was little effect of grazing management practice on arresting the decline in lotus presence due to drought, or on enhancing the regeneration processes associated with lotus persistence.

The WRKY family is one of the largest transcription factor (TF) families in plants and plays central roles in modulating plant stress responses and developmental processes, as well as secondary metabolic regulations. Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is an aquatic crop that has significant food, ornamental and pharmacological values. Here, we performed an overview analysis of WRKY TF family members in lotus, and studied their functions in environmental adaptation and regulation of lotus benzylisoquinoline alkaloid (BIA) biosynthesis. A total of 65 WRKY genes were identified in the lotus genome and they were well clustered in a similar pattern with their Arabidopsis homologs in seven groups (designated I, IIa-IIe, and III), although no lotus WRKY was clustered in the group IIIa. Most lotus WRKYs were functionally paired, which was attributed to the recently occurred whole genome duplication in lotus. In addition, lotus WRKYs were regulated dramatically by salicilic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and submergence treatments, and two lotus WRKYs, NnWRKY40a and NnWRKY40b, were significantly induced by JA and promoted lotus BIA biosynthesis through activating BIA biosynthetic genes. The investigation of WRKY TFs for this basal eudicot reveals new insights into the evolution of the WRKY family, and provides fundamental information for their functional studies and lotus breeding.

Abstract (sommario):
We have studied several samples from Lotus corniculatus s. l. and L. zhegulensis populations with the use of SSR and sequenced nuclear (ITS) and plastid (atpB-rbcL, ndhC-trnV, rpl32-trnL(UAG), trnH-psbA, trnL-trnF) markers. We analysed 9 local populations from the Volga River valley ranging from Ulyanovsk in the north to Volgograd in the south, as well as two local populations from Moscow and Lipetsk Provinces. Analyses of SSR markers using the STRUCRURE program divided the sample into three genetic clusters. Populations from Moscow and Lipetsk Provinces, and three local populations from the ‘locus classicus’ location of L. zhegulensis in Samara Province appeared to be the most genetically differentiated while all the other populations were variously genetically admixed. Low pairwise Fst values indicate low genetic differentiation of Lotus populations and the intraspecific nature of the revealed diversity. The nuclear and plastid DNA sequences analyzed yielded little information. Substitutions and indels revealed were mostly autapomorphies characteristic of separate specimens or small groups of specimens but not of populations. Our study enables to firmly conclude that Lotus populations from the right bank of the Volga River in vicinity of Zhiguli upland described as L. zhegulensis are weakly genetically differentiated from other populations of Lotus corniculatus s. l. and, hence, cannot be regarded as a separate species.

Abstract (sommario):
Birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) is a perennial species that is known for its outstanding characters as a crucial component of meadow and pasture vegetation and a highly successful fodder crop. However, its cultivation has been limited by the inability to control pod shattering. The anatomic and physiological bases of pod shattering are known and are considered to be controlled by more than one gene. This paper reviews the known causes of pod shattering and potential ways of overcoming pod indehiscence in L. corniculatus. Genetic transformation is possible in the genus Lotus; however, the useful genes determining the seed pod indehiscent character have not been identified yet. The only way of introducing pod indehiscence characters into L. corniculatus is by interspecific hybridization within the genus Lotus; embryo rescue and protoplast cultures are promising. To determine useful genotypes for crosses, investigations of pre- and post-fertilization barriers are necessary. To that end, we present here a convenient procedure for a whole-mount clearing treatment of immature seeds that leaves the cell walls of tissues intact. This is a useful technique for the study of post-fertilization barriers in Lotus.

Abstract (sommario):
Lotus (120–130 species) is the largest genus of the tribe Loteae. The taxonomy of Lotus is complicated, and a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus is needed. We have conducted phylogenetic analyses of Lotus based on nrITS data alone and combined with data on 46 morphological characters. Eighty-one ingroup nrITS accessions representing 71 Lotus species are studied; among them 47 accessions representing 40 species are new. Representatives of all other genera of the tribe Loteae are included in the outgroup (for three genera, nrITS sequences are published for the first time). Forty-two of 71 ingroup species were not included in previous morphological phylogenetic studies. The most important conclusions of the present study are (1) addition of morphological data to the nrITS matrix produces a better resolved phylogeny of Lotus; (2) previous findings that Dorycnium and Tetragonolobus cannot be separated from Lotus at the generic level are well supported; (3) Lotus creticus should be placed in section Pedrosia rather than in section Lotea; (4) a broad treatment of section Ononidium is unnatural and the section should possibly not be recognized at all; (5) section Heinekenia is paraphyletic; (6) section Lotus should include Lotus conimbricensis; then the section is monophyletic; (7) a basic chromosome number of x = 6 is an important synapomorphy for the expanded section Lotus; (8) the segregation of Lotus schimperi and allies into section Chamaelotus is well supported; (9) there is an apparent functional correlation between stylodium and keel evolution in Lotus.

Abstract (sommario):
The mechanical and physical properties of lotus kernel play an important role in deep processing of lotus seeds. This paper established an empirical distribution function of random variables of the shape parameters of lotus kernels. The relationship between the moisture content and the hardness was analysed, and the compression strength of the different surfaces of the same lotus kernels were compared. The results indicate that, with the same moisture content, there is a centralized distribution section for lotus kernel shape. The density of a lotus kernel is higher than that of water. The higher the moisture content, the lower hardness. And the lower moisture content, the higher hardness. Compressed from different directions, the compression strengths of the lotus kernels are different.
