Abstract (sommario):
A connection between specific aspects of mapping evidence prepared in advance of the Town and Country Planning Act of 1947 and the history of the plotlands provides opportunities for critical reflection. First, new mapping evidence demonstrates that the scope and distribution of plotland places were historically of far greater significance than previously thought or documented both in conventional planning theory and in existing plotland-focused research. Second, the sociopolitical agenda which accompanied the production and representation of mapping evidence during the 1930 and 1940s offers opportunity for critical reflection on the consequences and responsibilities of rethinking planning regulations.

Abstract (sommario):
There was a place in my life where I had the time and space to reflect more deeply on the intricacies of home. Here my sense of where I was shifted and stirred, along with my relationship with some of the ‘things’ that made up my home. The washing machine that seemingly existed as a complete, discrete ‘thing’ prior to arriving in my home transgressed into my washing machine. It became, as I describe below, co-produced within my home life – a co-production constituted through a myriad of near and far relationalities. This ‘thing’ lost its place as a machine conveniently located within the kitchen and became places.

Abstract (sommario):
Pictures and spaces, like literary texts, tell a story. This chapter, together with the Survey's envoi, tackles a range of these stories. At our first two sites we focus on painted landscapes in suburban villas (the Villa ‘Farnesina’, and the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta, near Rome). The next two, the famous but now mostly lost Horti Sallustiani and Porticus of Pompey, open a window onto the political and civic role of peri-urban Roman landscape gardens. Rounding off the survey, a stroll around the parkland of the emperor Hadrian's villa near Tibur (modern Tivoli) uses the contemporary site to reflect on villa visits then and now.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines an established working-class community in Dublin's southeast inner city. It describes the experience of root shock in a community that has experienced 'displacement in place' following urban renewal and gentrification in the surrounding area. The article highlights the shrinking of 'third places' for public mixing: older men have lost their pubs, younger people have lost their playgrounds, and young adults express a profound sense of displacement in place. As the class composition of the area changes, there are few places where classes can mingle.

Abstract (sommario):
People lost in the wilderness may be geographically disorientated, incapacitated or unable to return to places of safety. Tourists enter wilderness environments in pursuit of pleasure and leisure but sometimes things go wrong, and they become lost. Tourists have some unique needs dependent on their attitudes, behaviours, motivations and general lack of familiarity with the environment. These unique needs have been recognised in tourism disaster management literature but have not been addressed in search and rescue or lost-person literature. This paper reviews existing literature from the fields of tourism, search and rescue, preventative search and rescue, lost person behaviour, tourism disaster management and community engagement to propose a way forward for tourist safety research. One pathway is to deconstruct the event of a person lost in the wilderness into a series of linked phases. Deconstruction can inform theorists, practitioners and stakeholders about better ways to prevent and manage such events. This could benefit all stakeholders and provide empirical research grounded in established tourism, tourism disaster management and search and rescue theories.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
By using archaeological material and comparing it with analogies from oraltradition we can putatively identify some holy places which have been im-portant in past religions, but which have lost their holiness over the course oftime and due to changes in past religions. In doing this, it would be importantto distinguish two categories of holy sites. First, there are classic holy places, the knowledge of which predominantly derives from the living religion andliving folk tradition, and which relate primarily to the folk religion of the re-cent past. But in addition there are also sites that may have had significanceas holy places in different periods of the past, but which have lost this mean-ing and together with it also the folklore as the main source material. Thus itis important to consider other sources, such as archaeological sites, finds etc.,in order to recognize places which may have had an importance in the contextof some past religion. It is clear that we cannot see the whole of the holy land-scape of the past, but such an approach still permits us to observe holy placesin a more dynamic way, where the meaning of places has changed togetherwith the rest of religion, society and the settlement pattern, and where holyplaces may have been abandoned or new places brought into use.

Abstract (sommario):

Wells, C. Leanne. "Lost and Forgotten while Remaining in Place: The Lived Experience of Other-Imposed Social Isolation in the Work-Place". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50482.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation explores the lived experiences of workers who are involuntarily socially isolated in their work-places through the actions of one or more colleagues. This hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry is called by the question, "What is the lived experience of other-imposed social isolation in the work-place?" This study also explores the ways these targeted workers are lost and forgotten, by themselves and others, for the periods of time they remain in their socially isolating work-places.

The tradition of hermeneutic phenomenology grounds this inquiry, guided primarily by the works of Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Martin Buber, and to lesser and varying degrees by David Abram, Hans-George Gadamer, Edmond Husserl, David Michael Levin, Emmanual Levinas, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Max van Manen's six methodological guidelines serve as the framework for the research activities that comprise this study.
From conversations with, and written reflections from, eight work-place professionals, this study reveals what it is like to experience other-imposed, work-place social isolation. Through hermeneutic phenomenological exploration, the stories of these eight workers reveal lived experience along three primary themes. First, other-imposed social isolation is abusive power and control that is comprised of shameful, indecent acts. Second, the targets of involuntary social isolation experience relentless, wounding trauma. Third, while remaining in their socially isolating work-places, and sometimes for years after leaving, targeted workers bear the burdened weight of crushing grief.

The study suggests a need to expose antiquated, yet accepted, work-place mores, that serve as unconscious barriers to work-place respect and dignity. Further, the study reveals that conscious, and conscientious, awareness and attention to abusive work-place social isolation are the responsibility of each and every work-place citizen. Finally, the study recommends meaningful citizen choices -- such as refusing silence; standing alone, if necessary; and inviting work-place community attention -- to engage with others where workers' truths and dignity are at stake.

Khanuja, Neeta. "Lost in Place: A case study of an interactive installation for dementia awareness". TUDpress, 2019. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A36704.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Empathy is crucial for the wellbeing and happiness of people living with dementia and it comes with a better understanding of symptoms and challenges of the condition. Thus, it is important to spread awareness about dementia. Lost in Place, is an interactive installation that intends to trigger conversations and discussions about dementia by creating an unsettling experience of lack of orientation and lack of familiarity for the audience. It uses fog as a metaphor for losing self-identity and hidden memories. Beyond the specifics of the case-study, the paper elaborates the process of designing an interactive installation explaining the role of four key elements namely site, content, carrier and audience. These attributes can be generalized for understanding and designing an interactive media architecture project of this nature.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter revisits the ideas of radical empiricism and sensuous scholarship, embedded in current music education research. Focusing on the development of methodological implications of cultural responsiveness and arts-based research methods, the chapter argues for epistemic openness. The discussion is located within the author’s own experiences of course development for Swedish music teacher students in Gambia, field studies in multicultural classrooms in Sweden, and research design that includes the fiddle, opening up for music to ask the questions. Borrowing from anthropological research the concepts of radical empiricism and sensuous scholarship, music education researchers might find useful tools to approach project planning, to perform the analysis of the material and to communicate the results in culturally responsive forms that inform both research and praxis. By studying music transmission with culturally sensitive research methods, this chapter suggests possibilities to do more than observing and reporting. There is a possibility to engage with different knowledge systems and politics, in all types of retrieved material – and to generate inclusive knowledge building.

Abstract (sommario):
In the restoration of the historical and geographical conditions of today's Bulgarian lands, historical sources and documents of different origin, character and purpose come into use. The lack of sufficiently complete and accurate information about the development and dynamics of coastal archaeological landscapes in the narrative source material enhances the importance of medieval and renaissance maps of the Black Sea basin, which are an invaluable source of information. The combination of this information, together with the acquired archeological finds and the data from coastal and underwater geomorphological research, with great scientific reliability can restore the ancient appearance of certain objects. The study examined a large number of medieval and renaissance maps representing the port system on the Western Black Sea coast. The images of islands that do not exist today make a vivid impression. In order to be depicted on the navigational charts, it is obvious that they were important to the sailors of that time (hiding places, reef dangers, etc.). In the analysis of the old maps with the modern bathymetric map, as well as the conducted sea research, it was established that the locations of the depicted islands coincide with the places of modern rocky banks. The article offers options for their origin.

Abstract (sommario):
After the industrial revolution, the city has been bigger to accept the people who gathered in city, and the representative carácter of the contemporary city, which has been bigger and more funtional, was non-place. Non-places are places that has a different carácter with the place of antropological meaning, it means the place which has lost its carácter as a place in the meaning of antropological. If the non-place is a carácter of the contemporary city, there is a carácter of a traditional society that is as opposed to the contemporary city. That is a flexibility of the traditional city. In process of the modernization, these caracters of the traditional city has dissapeared, instead, the non-places are increased. The abandoned spaces, which are isolated like an island inside of the city, are related to the non-places closely. The abandonment of these spaces has been proceeded with the appearance of the non-places, and with the disappearance of the flexibility. Seoul is a city that apears very well of the caracters of non-places. In this article, we analize the relation between the apearance of non-places and the disappearance of the flexibility around with the abandoned spaces inside of the city. With this relation resulted from the análisis, we will analize the problems of the rapid modernization of the city of Seoul. For fin, we will find the way of recover the flexibility of the city with the urban regeneration of the abandoned spaces.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper introduces a scenario-building design methodology used in setting up a four-year Creative Europe Program project co-funded by the European Union. The project addresses an emerging field of action that aims to explore how small and remote places can benefit from the design of cultural and creative innovations within public spaces and in collaboration with local stakeholders. The paper describes how a common ground of scenarios has been designed for the development of project trajectories by defining future visions of action within small and remote places in Europe. This methodology is currently being applied and tested in ten pilot projects for the development of innovative creative solutions that address the specific needs of depopulated and relationally remote places considered to be depositories of material and immaterial culture that risks being undervalued, not consolidated, not handed down, and hence lost.

Abstract (sommario):
The 20th century witnessed changes which altered radically the world hitherto functioning in the same way for centuries. The pluralist global culture is characterized by rapid and unpredictable changeability involving continuous challenging of traditional values. Architecture is no exception to this rule, including religious architecture, which best reflects the spirituality of its time. Revaluation which took place in the last century resulted in the need of a new interpretation of the concepts of the sacred and the profane, as they have lost their clarity and significance. In consequence of the conflict between the dogmatic understanding of stability on the one hand and the modern culture, science, thought and world interpretation as well as the pace and style of living on the other, the need has emerged to build new places of cult that embrace the Zeitgeist of today – stripped of almost all ideology, visually modest, devoid in their décor of intense expression or a large number of stimuli. There are also temples which invite into the same space people of different religions as well as people who are seeking faith or are doubtful, places focused on catering for spiritual or contemplation needs, but also offering intellectual rest.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Mud Cap Drilling (MCD) is a technique from Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD), which is used when all conventional attempts fail to solve the loss of circulation. MCD places a very high drilling fluid density, called Mud Cap (MC), in the annulus above the lost zone to prevent the mud from returning to the surface. A sacrificial fluid instead of drilling mud is used to clean the hole and transport the cuttings into the loss formation. This study presents a detailed step-by-step model and design for a well in the Middle East. New equations were developed to calculate the MC height, MC density, and the position of the interface between the MC and the sacrificial fluid. The present model also depicts pump rate optimization and hole cleaning to reach an efficient drilling program. The case study presented within this paper encountered a complete lost zone and was considered as an un-drillable well. The pore and fracture pressures were calculated using drilling data from the offset well. A sensitivity analysis was performed to obtain optimal MC height and density. A complete optimal MCD design and optimal MCD operation for this well is conducted in detail. The results of this study have proved that the proposed model can be utilized as a tool to design and optimize an MCD program.

Abstract (sommario):
(Lz 132) is a very emblematic tale of Pu Songling’s (蒲松齡, 1640–1715), as it involves emblematic themes of Liaozhai zhiyi (聊齋誌異): a critical view of society, an adventure into enchanted lands, and a complex relationship to an independent, powerful woman. The tale tells about the journey of a man who, after having been lost at sea, visits two imaginary worlds. Luosha Haishi reveals its originality when comparing both these places. The first one, the Country of Rakshasas, is a state in which physical appearance determines one’s social status. This society is a satirical portrayal mirroring Pu’s vision of Qing China officialdom. Conversely, the City of the Sea, the character’s second place of stay, is a utopian undersea place where the character knows immediate success. Luosha Haishi thus makes the bitter statement of the impossibility to access glory and richness when one does not wish to hide behind appearances, while for it to occur it would require an ideal world that exists only in imagination.

Abstract ADNOC Gas processing fractionation facility have majority of steam consumers at low Pressure (LP) level. Steam is produced at medium pressure (MP) level with superheat to optimize the plant design and piping. Steam generators produce Medium Pressure steam followed by Pressure Letdown Stations (PLS) with de-superheating at various places to cater the demand of Low Pressure (LP) steam. Thermodynamically, use of PLS are viewed as less efficient from energy perspective, while the industry applied efficient alternative is the use of Back Pressure Steam Turbine (BPST) to recover the lost energy in PLS.

Abstract (sommario):
First of all, Grigore Vieru is a children`s poet because, under the sign of imagination, he returns through intermedia of them to the lost universe of childhood. The metaphysic return to the distant past means the revenue to the traditions and inland isolation. Being reached to the innocent universe, the poet is totally moved to primordial places by the contact with the mother`s image and the returning to the frame of the native borders. The insistent looking for childhood, by Vieru means nothing but ``looking for himself``. Through the sing of reflection and reminding, the poet redesigned in an artistic way the whole universe of native places which fully marked for him a living creature. The image of the past is suggested esthetically by revealing expression, and the rhymes of Vieru are identified as a confession with the lack of artificial and inner miniature. Being transposed in the hypostasis of a child, the poet gets down in the deep creature of himself to sanctify the universality and for calling the modern man through the perpetuation of spiritual and moral values.

Abstract (sommario):
This study investigates the relationships between language and human mobility in terms of investment, accessibility and inclusion and how human-computer interactions, AI (Artificial Intelligence) speech translators might overcome language barrier in a multilingual perspective. After a brief analysis of population dynamics, demographic change and migration based on European Union publications, the aim of this paper is to highlight the strong nexus between language and mobility and how it plays a key role in citizenship, educational policies, employment and social services. The phenomenon of linguistic identity, together with the power relations of ELF (English as Lingua Franca), is observed by presenting poststructuralist perspectives on SLA (Second Language Acquisition). It emerges that the power relations can be equal and unequal and can influence both positively and negatively users’ identities, shape people interactions and, thus, place them in particular communities or statuses. This ‘communicative imperialism’ can be inferred by the English Proficiency Index that places European countries in a high position, while countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and some Asian countries in the lowest ones. Non-native speakers have differing levels of command of the language, meaning that, for them, crucial details and nuances, as well as cultural references, might often be lost. This study explores the real-time multilingual interpretation, with the new emerging technologies, as a means to reduce language discrimination, information loss, and increase the return on investment (ROI), enabling everyone to join in a conversation in their own language from anywhere around the world.

Smith, Adam, e Megan Tooker. Character-defining features of the Buffalo south mole (south pier), NY. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), aprile 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/46743.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The US Congress codified the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), the nation’s most effective cultural resources legislation to date, mostly through establishing the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The NHPA requires federal agencies to address their cultural resources, which are defined as any prehistoric or historic district, site, building, structure, or object. The precursor to the Corps of Engineers erected the mole (a.k.a., the south pier) in the early 1820s at the entrance to the Buffalo harbor. The area on top of and surrounding the mole was modified through the past two hundred years, many of the character-defining features remain including the stone retaining walls, talus, stairs, and lighthouse identified in plans and drawings from the period of construction. Notably lost is the stone tow path, or banquette, and the stone incline on the south side of the mole is no longer visible. The researchers recommend a period of significance of c. 1820 through 1972 (50 years) since the mole has continued its original use of keeping the entrance to the Buffalo River open for freight and recreational boating traffic through the present day.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Lederman, Jaimee, Peter Haas, Stephanie Kellogg, Martin Wachs e Asha Weinstein Agrawal. Do Equity and Accountability Get Lost in LOSTs? An Analysis of Local Return Funding Provisions in California’s Local Option Sales Tax Measures for Transportation. Mineta Transportation Institute, febbraio 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2021.1811.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study explores how local return provisions of local option sales taxes (LOSTs) for transportation are allocated and spent to meet local and regional transportation needs. Local return refers to the component of county LOST measures that provides funding directly to municipalities in the county to be used to meet local needs. Local return has become a fixture in LOSTs; 58 LOST measures placed on the ballot in California (as of 2019) that have included local return in their expenditure plan have an average of 35% of revenues dedicated to local return. Local return provisions in the ballot measures often contain guidelines on how a portion of the money should be spent. The allocation of local return funds to localities has rarely been discussed in research, and spending decisions have to our knowledge never been analyzed. This paper conducts a mixed-methods analysis of all LOSTs with local return, relying on ordinances and other public documents related to local return expenditures, and supplemented with interviews with officials in six counties. Findings indicate that local return provisions are crafted to balance the needs of the county across different dimensions, including trying to achieve equity between urban and rural residents, investment in different transportation modes, and meeting both local and regional policy needs. Moreover, significant accountability mechanisms provide regulations to ensure that funds are distributed to and spent by jurisdictions as promised by the measures. Overall, this research finds that local return is a vital part of LOST measures in California, allowing cities to meet local needs ranging from maintenance of local streets to funding for special programs, while simultaneously aligning local investment with regional priorities.
