Abstract (sommario):
(1) Background: Currently, logistics operators are struggling with the problem of acquiring new areas to create added value. One of such challenges is acquiring a new function in the form of demand forecasting and coordination skills. The increase in the need to forecast demand is related to the increasing complexity of the distribution network, omnichannel systems and turbulent environment. It is necessary to have a comprehensive approach to the distribution network and to develop competences related to coordination. For the authors, one of the most important coordination factors is the quality of forecasts, especially in relation to modern logistics operators. (2) Methods: In literature studies, the authors combine prognostic abilities with a predisposition to coordinate logistic processes in distribution networks. The aim of the research is to develop a forecasting model that will allow a logistic operator who aspires to coordinate logistics processes to create forecasts in the distribution system. The tool was developed in the R programming language and allows for forecasting based on data from the Warehouse Management System; (3) Results: The quality of forecasts is correlated with the characteristics of the products, the relationship between the manufacturing company and the logistics operator, and the configuration of the distribution network in individual chains. The results of the forecasts were compared with selected features of each of the 5 distribution networks that were tested. In parallel, the attributes of a company capable of forecasting in the distribution network were analyzed. These attributes were also compared to those of the logistics operator. (4) Conclusions: The authors proved that a logistic operator with a set of defined features is capable of generating demand in the entire distribution network.

Abstract (sommario):
Regional logistic networks and linking urban clusters to boost high quality economic development are both key topics in sustainable development in China. In recent years, China has highlighted the significance of the logistics industry and urban cluster development, attaching practical importance to the connections between these two topics from a spatial perspective. This paper aims to discuss how regional logistic networks linking urban clusters improve economic development. This study constructs a logistic evaluation indicator system based on the multi-indicator data of 11 cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in 2020. This research employs the entropy-weighted-TOPSIS method to measure and rank the comprehensive logistics quality of each city in the economically linked logistic network of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. This study applies the modified gravity model to explore the logistics linkage and logistic network characteristics of each city in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Finally, this research analyzes how the agglomeration ability of the central cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area affects other cities from a spatial perspective. Furthermore, this spatial perspective investigates the agglomeration effect of the economic linkage logistic network through the social network analysis method. The results have the following three implications. (1) The logistic network has a high density, a stable overall structure with a strong agglomeration effect, and there is an increasingly mature logistic network development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in the Bay Area. (2) Agglomeration is significant in the central cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area including Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Macao. Nonetheless, insufficient peripheral cities have been cultivated. Therefore, the government should focus on strengthening the balance of urban development in the bay area and improving the logistics access among cities to break through the barriers of regional synergistic development. (3) The economic development of cities is highly correlated with the level of logistics links. Additionally, the economy is the cornerstone to promoting the high-quality development of the logistics industry. Moreover, the economy and logistics are inseparable, mutually promoted, and developed together.

Abstract (sommario):
Logistic networks are complex systems, composed of many elements connected through nonlinear relations. This property makes it difficult to study these systems with traditional analytical methods. Therefore, computer simulation is a valuable tool in the practical applications of modeling the structure of the logistics network, the relationship between its components and the rules controling its functioning. The simulation model can be run in order to imitate the operation of the actual system in a given time interval and analyze its behavior under different scenarios. In the paper resilience measures for logistic networks are proposed and a multi-method approach of computer simulation for analysing their resistance is presented. The proposed concept allows determining and checking the possibilities ways of building long-term robustness of logistics networks for serious disturbances. The application of the model is illustrated by an example from the steel industry. AnyLogic 8.2 software was used for the implementation.

Abstract (sommario):
Modern supply chains usually provide very complex inter- correlations between various actors: suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, customers, etc. Such inter-correlations are not only based on material flows but also on data and financial flows. Discussions about alternatives for traditional goods and services distribution in the company are becoming more frequent, as the constantly increasing demands and requirements of the market put pressure on suppliers and manufacturers logistics. Therefore, this need is emphasized by the growing of industrial systems complexity and its indirect and drown costs, increasing day by day. The terms Supply Network and Business Web are now interchangeable in the way they are used to summarise flow in supply chains (Tapscott, 2000). Distribution Webs and Supply Networks are urgently demanding new effective management strategies to preserve competitiveness, increase organization and control the complexity level increment. This dissertation touches upon the fundamental theories of Distribution Network Optimization and Supply Network Complexity Analysis, it proposes new techniques to characterize peculiar Supply Network aspects and underline the importance of adequate systemic approaches and software support in the development of this particular discipline. This work has four main goals: 1. Show how Goods Delivery Distribution Optimization is feasible and critical to creates efficient networks 2. Investigate how the issue of Distribution Network Design is crucial in order to increase efficiency and competitiveness 3. Assess the performance of new algorithms for industrial network complexity control and computation; 4. Develop new quantitative measurements of complexity for supply networks based on Network Analysis, which is often used to study natural ecosystems, focusing in particular on the concept of entropy of information (derived by Shannon, 1948). All these accomplishment are associated with appropriate software applications. The dissertation is divided in three Parts (1. Theoretical framework, 2. New network analysis methodologies development, 3. Three published papers collection). This work, conducted with a profitable interdisciplinary collaboration with the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Michigan University (Ann Arbour), is devoted to investigate alternatives for goods distribution in Supply Networks and develop advances in both theories on Supply Network Design problem and on its application to industrial contexts. The new interdisciplinary approaches developed exploit new performances indexes to map the exchange of goods and information between different actors in a complex supply chain and show how Network Analysis and systemic approaches are relevant tools in providing a new perspective in defining supply network organization and complexity.

Abstract (sommario):
The logistics and transportation sectors play a vital role in modern economies, representing countries competitiveness enhancement opportunities and, in the meantime, imposing significant social and environmental challenges. In 2015, logistics and transportation costs accounted to 7.85% and 9-10% of United States and European Union GDPs, respectively. In the same year, these industries contributed for the 5.5% to global GHG emissions. These results derive as from new market trends and requirements emergence (e.g., urbanization, e-commerce, etc.) as from logistics and transportation systems \complex" nature (e.g., multiple actors with different goals, uncertainty, etc.). To face the mentioned issues, reorganisations of current logistics and transportation systems have still to be studied, planned, tested and evaluated. In recent years, the “City Logistics" and the “Physical Internet" theoretical frameworks, focusing on urban and inter-urban environments respectively, have been gaining momentum between researchers and practitioners. Nevertheless, real implementations of such paradigms are still far to be deployed: indeed, innovative collaborative logistics business and organisational models as well as technological enablers supporting a successful execution of logistics and transport activities are still missing. With these premises, the general goal of this work is to contribute to the understanding of collaborative logistics, focusing on emerging business and organizational models such as the Physical Internet. To this aim, the present research addresses three major aspects. First, the problem is tackled from a conceptual point of view: indeed, since the current collaborative logistics types classification (i.e., the “classic" vertical, horizontal and diagonal ones) is missing a concept to emphasise the emergence of “innovative" models characterized by a simultaneous application of multiple classical approaches, a new collaborative logistics type called “interconnected" is coined. Second, in order to fill the scientific literature gap represented by the absence of a harmonised methodology to analyse collaborative logistics management implications, a taxonomy for scientific contributions classification and future research areas identification is proposed. Finally, starting from the results of the theoretical analysis, a practical application is derived. In particular, the ICT and decision technologies innovation gaps is addressed by presenting a general procedure for cloud-based collaborative logistics platforms design, deployment and preliminary performance evaluation.

Abstract (sommario):

There has been a quick development in the wireless network area during the last decade. Mostly

these days the focus in the wireless area is on very high speed and long range applications. This

thesis describes how ZigBee is suitable for wireless sensor networks in logistic telemetry

applications for global managing and monitoring of goods. ZigBee has been developed by the

organization named as ‘ZigBee Alliance’ as a new wireless standard for the wireless solutions

based upon the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard [2]. ZigBee is a new technology as compared to the other

wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, but it has certain characteristics such as low cost, low

power, support for mesh networking e.t.c which makes its chances to be more successful than

others.

The other aim of this thesis is to examine different issues related to ZigBee to see its fitness for

logistic telemetry applications like multi-hop routing issues, routing strategies and design

requirements. ZigBee is relatively new wireless technology, so there are great deals of promises

associated with it. In this thesis, a comparison between ZigBee and Bluetooth technologies will

also be made.

Abstract (sommario):
The logistics concept has been changing, adding new elements and becoming more complex. In the fifties it was restricted to physical distribution only. Nowadays, it embraces the total flow of materials, products and information between the different companies of a supply chain. In this new scenario, organizations in all industries have outsourced their logistics operations to specialized companies called logistics operators. Information technologies (IT) have an important role in the development of logistics activities and in the logistics operator\'s performance: IT applications allow an optimal tuning of the logistics system and an integrated management of its several components. The purpose of this research is to investigate how the logistics operators are applying IT in the logistics process and how IT is contributing to the establishment of value networks. The methodology utilized was the multiple cases study. Five logistic operators that feature different strategic positions and operate with different industries in the Brazilian market were investigated. The sample was chosen so as to provide the information needed for an analysis of all stages of the logistic process. The results of the research indicate that customized applications, suited to the particularities of each operator, play an important role in the creation of competitive advantages, and suggest the centrality of IT in the creation of value networks.

Abstract (sommario):
This study undertakes an empirical analysis of takeover predictions in the UK. The objectives of this research are twofold. First, whether it is possible to predict or identify takeover targets before they receive any takeover bid. Second, to test whether it is possible to improve prediction outcome by extending firm specific characteristics such as corporate governance variables as well as employing a different technique that has started becoming an established analytical tool by its extensive application in corporate finance field. In order to test the first objective, Logistic Regression (LR) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been applied as modelling techniques for predicting target companies in the UK. Hence by applying ANNs in takeover predictions, their prediction ability in target classification is tested and results are compared to the LR results. For the second objective, in addition to the company financial variables, non-financial characteristics, corporate governance characteristics, of companies are employed. For the fist time, ANNs are applied to corporate governance variables in takeover prediction purposes. In the final section, two groups of variables are combined to test whether the previous outcomes of financial and non-financial variables could be improved. However the results suggest that predicting takeovers, by employing publicly available information that is already reflected in the share price of the companies, is not likely at least by employing current techniques of LR and ANNs. These results are consistent with the semi-strong form of the efficient market hypothesis.

Abstract (sommario):
The primary purpose of this thesis is to predict whether or not a customer will make a purchase from a specific item category. The historical data is provided by the Nordic online-based IT-retailer Dustin. The secondary purpose is to evaluate how well a fully connected feed forward neural network performs as compared to Lasso regularized logistic regression and gradient boosted trees (XGBoost) on this task. This thesis finds XGBoost to be superior to the two other methods in terms of prediction accuracy, as well as speed.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe methodology to model systems as graphs or networks already exists for a long time. The availability of information technology and computational power has led to a renaissance of the network modeling approach. Scientists have collected data and started to create huge models of complex networks from various domains. Manufacturing and logistics benefits from this development, because material flow systems are predetermined to be modeled as networks. This chapter revisits selected advances in network modeling and analysis in manufacturing and logistics that have been achieved in the last decade. It presents the basic modeling concept, the transition from static to dynamic and stochastic models, and a collection of examples how network models can be applied to contribute to solving problems in planning and control of logistic systems.

The most important underlying functions, namely the logistic density and cumulative logistic density function, are explained, followed by a very brief introduction to the core concepts of event history analysis. In the network diffusion model, contagion, or, in other words, the adoption of information or innovation, is based on the concept of exposure which will be elaborated in this chapter. Finally, after describing and visualizing the four different networks and their correlations, exponential random graph models are used to analyze structural and substantive properties of these networks. The introduction concludes with a brief overview of the chapters.

Abstract (sommario):
This article deals with the classification and creation of logistic distribution models. The main objective of the article is to create the methodology for designing a global distribution network (GDN). The suitable GDN could play a significant role in the global supply chain and try to fulfil the needs of companies while entering foreign markets. Logistic operators with their optimized networks help facilitate international trade to deliver parcels, packages, partnering with express, courier services embracing mobile and online technologies, provide financial services etc. On the basis of these needs the methodology of designing the logistics network for cross-border or national logistics network will be formulated.

Abstract (sommario):
Reverse logistic network design problems involve strategic decisions which influence tactical and operational decisions. In particular, they involve facility location, transportation and inventory decisions, which affect the cost of the distribution system and the quality of the customer service level. Locating a collection centre is an important strategic decision, as purchasing or building facilities requires sizable investment; also the network transportation cost is affected by the selection of facility locations. The location that is selected must therefore take into account all the parameters and variables that are relevant and the decision may even affect demand. In this paper, network design for reverse logistics is investigated to solve the End-of-life Vehicles (ELV) collection centres location problem. We start by giving an understanding of the process of this reverse logistics network design by considering the features of reverse logistics, the role of ELV management and use of optimization methods. Based on this, a reverse logistics network design case for collection of End-of-life Vehicles is presented by formulating the problem into a mixed-integer linear program (MILP), taking into consideration the Capacitated Facility Location Problem. The solution to this model is obtained using IBM CPLEX Optimization Studio©. In addition the applicability of the model in other reverse logistic networks is discussed and the subjects for further research are pointed out.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: To compare the performance of popular machine learning algorithms (ML) in mapping the sensorimotor cortex (SM) and identifying the anterior lip of the central sulcus (CS). Methods: We evaluated support vector machines (SVMs), random forest (RF), decision trees (DT), single layer perceptron (SLP), and multilayer perceptron (MLP) against standard logistic regression (LR) to identify the SM cortex employing validated features from six-minute of NREM sleep icEEG data and applying standard common hyperparameters and 10-fold cross-validation. Each algorithm was tested using vetted features based on the statistical significance of classical univariate analysis (p<0.05) and extended () 17 features representing power/coherence of different frequency bands, entropy, and interelectrode-based distance. The analysis was performed before and after weight adjustment for imbalanced data (w). Results: 7 subjects and 376 contacts were included. Before optimization, ML algorithms performed comparably employing conventional features (median CS accuracy: 0.89, IQR [0.88-0.9]). After optimization, neural networks outperformed others in means of accuracy (MLP: 0.86), the area under the curve (AUC) (SLPw, MLPw, MLP: 0.91), recall (SLPw: 0.82, MLPw: 0.81), precision (SLPw: 0.84), and F1-scores (SLPw: 0.82). SVM achieved the best specificity performance. Extending the number of features and adjusting the weights improved recall, precision, and F1-scores by 48.27%, 27.15%, and 39.15%, respectively, with gains or no significant losses in specificity and AUC across CS and Function (correlation r=0.71 between the two clinical scenarios in all performance metrics, p<0.001). Interpretation: Computational passive sensorimotor mapping is feasible and reliable. Feature extension and weight adjustments improve the performance and counterbalance the accuracy paradox. Optimized neural networks outperform other ML algorithms even in binary classification tasks. The best-performing models and the MATLAB® routine employed in signal processing are available to the public at (Link 1).

Abstract (sommario):
This research brief describes the disengagement process of formerly armed actors (FAAs) from a Non-State Armed Group (NSAG) as a social network enterprise. It characterises leaving an NSAG as a relational process shaped by various nodes in a defector's network and actors at multiple societal levels such as family and community members, other FAAs, government officials, and (I)NGO professionals, varying across conflict settings and individual cases. The analysis emphasises the importance of relationships in informing individual disengagement decisions and the logistical support required for successful outcomes. It underscores the need to understand how social networks function and recommends to the institutions involved in Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) meaningful engagement with the vast range of actors implicated in this process.

Abstract (sommario):
Commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety is a major concern in the United States, including the District of Columbia (DC), where CMVs make up 15% of traffic. This research uses a comprehensive approach, combining statistical analysis and machine learning techniques, to investigate the impact of road pavement conditions on CMV accidents. The study integrates traffic crash data from the Traffic Accident Reporting and Analysis Systems Version 2.0 (TARAS2) database with pavement condition data provided by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). Data spanning from 2016 to 2020 was collected and analyzed, focusing on CMV routes in DC. The analysis employs binary logistic regression to explore relationships between injury occurrence after a CMV crash and multiple independent variables. Additionally, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models were developed to classify CMV crash injury severity. Importantly, the inclusion of pavement condition variables (International Roughness Index and Pavement Condition Index) substantially enhanced the accuracy of the logistic regression model, increasing predictability from 0.8% to 41%. The study also demonstrates the potential of Artificial Neural Network models in predicting CMV crash injury severity, achieving an accuracy of 60% and an F-measure of 0.52. These results highlight the importance of considering road pavement conditions in road safety policies and interventions. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to enhance road safety for CMVs in the District of Columbia and showcases the potential of machine learning techniques in understanding the complex interplay between road conditions and CMV crash occurrences.

Abstract (sommario):
This work was in response to the Defense Logistic Agency’s (DLA) Subsistence Network Broad Agency Announcement, BAA-0003-16 addressing 2019 NDAA Section 329 that states packaging materials used for Meals Ready-to-Eat (MRE) that contact food products must be free of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This was addressed by determining the presence or absence of PFAS on MREs by extraction followed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Any samples positive for PFAS were quantitated using LC triple quadrupole (QqQ) MS at the US Army Engineering and Research Development Center (ERDC) and by high resolution quadrupole time-of-flight (qTOF) MS and GC-MS at Oregon State University (OSU).

Abstract (sommario):
The performance of supply chains used to be mainly the concern of academics and professionals who studied the potential efficiencies and risks associated with this aspect of globalisation. In 2021, major disruptions in this critical sector of our economies are making headlines and attracting the attention of policy makers around the world. Supply chain bottlenecks create shortages, fuel inflation, and undermine economic recovery. This report provides a transversal and multidisciplinary analysis of the challenges and opportunities regarding data interoperability and data sharing as they relate to the ‘Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Seaway Trade Corridor’ (GLSLTC)’s intermodal transportation and trade data strategy. The size and scope of this trade corridor are only matched by the complexity of its multimodal freight transportation systems and growing urbanization on both sides of the Canada-US border. This complexity is exacerbated by the lack of data interoperability and effective collaborations between the different stakeholders within the various jurisdictions and amongst them. Our analytical work relies on : 1) A review of the relevant documentation on the latest challenges to supply chains (SC), intermodal freight transport and international trade, identifying any databases that are to be used.; 2) A comparative review of selected relevant initiatives to give insights into the best practices in digital supply chains implemented in Canada, the United States, and the European Union.; 3) Interviews and discussions with experts from Transport Canada, Statistics Canada, the Canadian Centre on Transportation Data (CCTD) and Global Affairs Canada, as well as with CIRANO’s research community and four partner institutions to identify databases and data that they use in their research related to transportation and trade relevant data availabilities and methodologies as well as joint research opportunities. Its main findings can be summarized as follow: GLSLTC is characterized by its critical scale, complexity, and strategic impact as North America’s most vital trade corridor in the foreseeable further intensification of continental trade. 4% of Canadian GDP is attributed to the Transportation and Logistics sector (2018): $1 trillion of goods moved every year: Goods and services imports are equivalent to 33% of Canada’s GDP and goods and services exports equivalent to 32%. The transportation sector is a key contributor to the achievement of net-zero emissions commitment by 2050. All sectors of the Canadian economy are affected by global supply chain disruptions. Uncertainty and threats extend well beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic. “De-globalization” and increasing supply chains regionalization pressures are mounting. Innovation and thus economic performance—increasingly hinges on the quantity and quality of data. Data is transforming Canada’s economy/society and is now at the center of global trade “Transport data is becoming less available: Canada needs to make data a priority for a national transportation strategy.” * “How the Government of Canada collects, manages, and governs data—and how it accesses and shares data with other governments, sectors, and Canadians—must change.”

Abstract (sommario):
The study analyzes the traditional media during 2013-2021 and draws attention to a number of factors, factors of economic and global nature in the historical context, which affect the general state of the media market in Ukraine. The main goal is to outline the peculiarities of the development of the print media market in modern conditions and challenges. The study uses socio-communicative and axiological approaches, methods of content analysis, synthesis and general are the main methods that were used in the research process. In addition to catalysts for abrupt changes in the print media market of Ukraine, factors have been identified that significantly affect the development trends of the general media market: digitalization, destruction of logistics, periodicals, outflow of advertisers from traditional media (television, radio, newspapers and magazines). There are already forecasts that due to the increase in the price of paper on the world market there will be an increase in prices for printed products by 40%), the lack of a culture of consumption of subscription information, as there is a free alternative (social networks, search engines). Results/findings and conclusions of my research: a set of three crisis periods, as a result of which the factors identified in the study are the main characteristics of the development of the modern print media market in Ukraine. The print media market, due to the global situation through COVID-19, is going through difficult times. In fact, the prospect for further scientific research may be the study of the financial component of the Ukrainian media market in the context of general world trends.
