Based on research into pre-industrial spatial practices and experiences of several of our projects, we seek a new paradigm - one that we call “Responsible Design Practice”.

This article shows how Buddhist philosophies are consistent with the rational counseling approach of Logic-Based Therapy (LBT), as presented in Elliot D. Cohen’s book, The New Rational Therapy: Thinking Your Way To Serenity, Success, and Profound Happiness. It presents many Buddhist insights as pathways to the “transcendent” or guiding virtues of LBT, and, accordingly, as philosophical antidotes to its eleven “cardinal fallacies.” It therefore helpfully adds to the repertoire of philosophies that can be used by LBT counselors in helping counselees address their problems of living.

Abstract (sommario):
This text aims to affirm Indigenous philosophies as wisdom that contributes significantly to the way of thinking/feeling education and philosophy. From the Western tradition, philosophy has been constituted from the rupture of what we call mythical thought. Indigenous philosophies, however, start from the mythical narrative, symbolic thought, dreams, orality, and all the ancestry they carry to constitute their cosmologies. To affirm Indigenous thought is, therefore, to recover what was denied, showing that philosophy does not have a single soil of origin (Greece), but is built in different territories and historical times. The negation of indigenous philosophies translates, in many moments, to the very ontological negation of those who have produced and continue to produce thought. Therefore, Indigenous philosophies are forms of reforestation of monocultural rationality and can compose other political-pedagogical exercises, in which good living is a central element. The objective is to show that Indigenous philosophies carry ways of life that contribute to rethinking the “civilizing” processes that have led humanity and the planet to the destruction of the diversity of thought and, with this, teach us to live interculturality as a necessary learning for the survival of knowledge and peoples.

This research aims to discover the organizational philosophies of Laweyan Batik businesses in Surakarta City, Central Java Province, Indonesia. This research was conducted in Mahkota Batik, Putra Laweyan Batik, Gres Tenan Batik, and Merak Manis Batik production houses. This research used the descriptive-qualitative method. It employed the case study approach. Research results showed the organizational philosophies of the Laweyan Batik production as follows: (1) it emphasizes professional character, through the application of the “urip iku urup” Javanese philosophy that means “living is struggling”, (2) it applies the organizational philosophy of togetherness, by applying the Javanese philosophy of “mangayu bagya” (collective happiness), (3) it applies the organizational philosophy of humanity through the application of the “golek sampurnaning urip” (seeking the perfection in life) Javanese philosophy, (4) it emphasizes the value of skill and creativity by applying the “sepi ing pamrih rame ing gawe” (less talking, more working) Javanese philosophy. The application of these organizational philosophies that are based on Javanese philosophies allows the Laweyan Batik businesses to have unique characteristics that are different from other local groups.

During the last two decades the world has experienced a major transformation in thinking on the role of government in provision of services and socio-economic development. This change in thinking has come about as a result of the inability of two major philosophies of production—capitalism and socialism—to redistribute resources for the improvement in the living condition of the masses. Both the philosophies have shortcomings. Capitalism encourages entrepreneurship and growth, but it also creates extreme economic disparities leading to poverty. Socialism in its attempt to create an egalitarian society curbs and stifles entrepreneurship, leading to discontentment and economic inefficiencies.

Bhagwad Gita, also known as the Gita, is an important ancient Indian text, written around the 3rd Century BCE. The Gita appears in the 18th Chapter of the epic, Mahabharata, written by Sage Vyasa. It is set on a war front. The Bhagwad Gita is presented as a dialogue between Arjuna, one of the warriors, and Krishna, his charioteer who was also a king. Arjuna is shown to be confused and conflicted about fighting in the war against his unjust cousins and teachers. Krishna, on the other hand, attempts, through various means, to counsel him about his duty by explaining the workings of mankind and the world. He points out the flawsin Arjuna’s reasoning and helps him clear his clouded judgement. In doing so, Krishna gave away secrets to living a meaningful life. Although the Gita is addressed towards Arjuna, his message applies to each one of us as humans who are at times conflicted, unsure and resentful. It contains eternal wisdom on the best ways to live our lives while also taking into consideration differences in personality and preference. Logic-based therapy is a modality of philosophical counselling developed by Dr. Cohen that suggests that human beings have certain faulty ways or illogical ways of thinking and interpreting life circumstances that manifest in the form of irritation and other day-to-day issues like procrastination, anger, management issues, low self-esteem etc. To solve such issues, which he calls Cardinal Fallacies, it is necessary to think rationally and transgress those illogical thought patterns. Hence, in Logic Based Therapy timeless philosophical ideologies are offered as antidotes by which people can adopt new ways of thinking and solve such everyday problems. This paper attempts to show how different cardinal fallacies can be tackled by using the eternal wisdom presented in the Bhagwad Gita, in the form of uplifting philosophies.

Abstract Philosophers of religion and theologians have long debated one of the most fundamental features of religious life, namely, how humans are able to talk about God. More than others, Paul Ricoeur has offered a viable philosophical account for bearing witness to the Divine beyond the strictures of logical positivism. Nevertheless, ‘bearing witness’ (martureó) remains problematic for living religion because it is always already oriented toward a kind of death (martyr). While acknowledging the approbation Ricoeur deserves for enabling religious expression, this essay challenges Ricoeur’s Kantian and Naberian presuppositions in light of feminist philosophies (of religion). Scholars like Luce Irigaray and Grace Jantzen help us think beyond the a priori limits that structure God-talk as a burden to bear, opening thereby a discursive frame beyond the phallogocentric and necrophilic.

Utopian cities from social reform literature from the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries were a serious attempt to improve living and working conditions of their time. Some of this literature included a design for a city that would be complimentary to and enhance the political philosophy of the respective authors. Four of the most famous works which include a plan of a city are, Tommaso Campanella’s Civitas Solis (City of the Sun) (1602), Johann Valentin Andreae’s Christianopolis (1619), Robert Owen’s Villages of Co-operation (1817 & 1830) and James Silk Buckingham’s Victoria (1849). These works are frequently featured in literature on utopian cities. However, no consideration is given to whether these ‘utopian’ cities have any value as urban plans or whether they incorporate any desirable urban features. These urban designs of the city are significant to political philosophies because the cities are presented as being integral to such philosophies. This paper considers the following questions: ‘Do the main principles behind the initial political philosophies and their coinciding plan endure within the design of these cities?’ ‘Does a modern audience perceive in these cities the features that made them utopian in the centuries in which they were planned?’

Every art educator has a story to tell, and that story is part of the complex reality of art education history worth documenting. This Special Issue focuses on the importance of documenting contemporary histories of art education. Within my art education history course, I asked graduate students to complete contemporary historical research on art educators still living. After students studied the various education philosophies, ideologies and pedagogies, they reached out to a living art educator to interview. What developed was six biographical studies of art educators who have contributed to the field of art education in unique ways.

In this paper, it is debated that identity is more a matter of practicality than a philosophy in the colonial and postcolonial world. There is a detailed delineation on cultural as well as cross cultural identities, given to migrants living in a metropolis. The researcher has focused on transnational English Novel The Black Album written by Hanif Kureishi in 1995. Philosophies and critical notions concerning hybridity and cultural globalization are focused and it is argued that migration is also a part of a transnational culture. The researcher through dominant discourses on culture and identity of globalized nations has explored the selected literary writing. The purpose is to find out whether English literature particularly literature writing on migrants are also dealing with same philosophies of identity or they are promoting diverse issues. The research has concluded that no doubt cultural purity is significant and essential to survive but, in a metropolis, where multiple nations are living, this cultural purity must be guarded with ambivalence when question of multiple identities arises. The research has explored different factors that are involved in globalization of different cultures and then promote cultural hybridity with an influence on identity of an individual, and community, or a culture.

Beethoven’s music has often been framed in terms of art religion, immortality, and secular humanism. Building on these studies, this article proposes that certain works by Beethoven enact a fantasy of infinitely postponing death and living forever on earth, something that I call temporal eternity. To develop this concept, it draws on the concept of chronolibido developed by the contemporary philosopher Martin Hägglund, as well as writings by Novalis and Friedrich Schlegel. The article’s case studies are Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in A♭ Major, op. 110 (1821), and String Quartet in A Minor, op. 132 (1825). In both works, the score refers to an increase in strength. Opus 110 concludes with a return of a previously heard fugue, marked “again reviving, gradually returning to life.” Similarly, the third movement of op. 132, “Holy Song of Thanks from a Convalescent to the Godhead,” revolves around a continually returning B section, titled “feeling new strength.” In both ops. 110 and 132, then, the textual references to strength occur in the context of a double variation form that supports cyclic processes of return. Their structural designs allow for the continual regeneration of each section, as though the evocation of new strength could recur eternally. Such formal processes depict strength as a renewable resource capable of sustaining temporal eternity.

Advances in health care mean that we can now treat diseases that once cut lives short. However, the increase in life expectancy has not been matched by improvements in quality of life. The World Health Organization warns us that all countries should prepare to meet the challenges of an aging population and this is integral to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This may require a shift in attitude toward aging. We aimed to use meta-ethnography to explore the experience of adults living beyond the age of 80. Our conceptual model illuminates the phenomenon of connection in older age and reflects on the paradox of time: ephemeral, yet interminable. Our findings encourage us to reflect on the influence of enlightenment philosophies that underpin the desire for autonomy at all costs. Our study challenges the stereotypes of old age and has the potential to influence people’s perspectives toward aging.

The aftermath of the Second World War saw some radical rethinking in both theology and philosophy on what it is to live well as a human being. In philosophy two of the key thinkers were Elizabeth Anscombe and Philippa Foot. In theology two key thinkers were Thomas Deman, a French Dominican, and somewhat later an English Dominican, Herbert McCabe. A key feature in all four thinkers was a recovery of the work of Aristotle and Aquinas, in particular the concept of phronēsis (prudentia). The paper’s close analysis of the virtue of prudentia demonstrates the insufficiency of modern moral philosophies that are committed to portraying morality as a moral code. A correlative argument is made within theology: the virtue of prudentia fortified by the gift of counsel is central for good Christian living.

This study reports on the impact of international visiting faculty’s teaching experiences in the United States on their personal, professional, and intercultural development. It is based on the principles of qualitative research and can be described as a case study. Data collection involved a questionnaire, a written narrative, and a semi-structured interview with each of a number of teachers. Participants included a group of 22 visiting faculty. Three main categories, each of which can be subdivided into benefits and challenges, emerged from the analysis: intercultural matters, professional matters, and personal matters. A wide range of benefits was identified, suggesting that the participants adapted to new life styles, became more mature, obtained a deeper understanding of themselves, reaffirmed their own educational values and philosophies, raised cultural awareness, became more flexible, and developed attitudes that involved tolerance and respect. Conversely, visiting faculty reported that they faced challenges related to language barriers, interaction with native speakers, classroom management, lack of support from school administrators, and separation from family.

The issue of why so many young adolescents around the world are disengaging from school and making the choice to drop out is one of the most intractable, vexed, perplexing, and controversial issues confronting educators. Tackling it requires courage and a radical rethinking of school reform around issues of power, ownership of learning, and the relevance of schooling and curriculum for young lives. This means a heightened institutional capacity to “listen.” This article describes an instance of a disadvantaged urban Australian government school that realized it had little alternative but to try new approaches; “old ways” were not working. The article describes an ensemble of school reform practices, philosophies, and strategies that give young adolescents genuine ownership of their learning. This school stands out as a beacon that school reform is possible, even for young adolescents from the most difficult of circumstances. However, such approaches look markedly different from where mainstream educational reform is taking us at the moment.

Transition is a process that can encompass the life-span of individuals with disabilities. Through the transition from high-school to community living and employment is critical for persons in rural areas, there are essential stages, such as prevocational training and the dissemination of career information, that should precede transition. Because limited resources can restrict prevocational training in rural areas, strategies for developing prevocational skills in school can be supplemented with community and home-based activities. Strategies for disseminating information about careers and employment in rural areas and philosophies which can be the basis for organizing transition programs are reviewed as well.

This article explores the growing prominence of nature-inspired design philosophies in the context of sustainability and human well-being within the built environment and focuses on their application within laboratory buildings. Biomimicry and biophilic design are highlighted as key nature-inspired design approaches, with biomimicry drawing inspiration from nature for innovations and biophilic design promoting human health through enhancing the connection with the surrounding natural elements. This paper further discusses living building strategy as an emerging method for creating dynamic and adaptable spaces by prioritizing user experience through co-creation and focusing on sustainable and regenerative structures. The potential of integrating these approaches is emphasized using laboratory buildings as an example, with nature-inspired and living laboratories serving as models for future built environments that promote both environmental responsibility and a positive human experience. Accordingly, this work aims to investigate the design and construction of laboratory buildings based on nature-inspired design strategies and the living building concept. Moreover, the paper discusses the application of biomimicry and living building concepts within laboratory buildings as a novel contribution to the body of knowledge, and concludes by proposing the Nature-inspired & Living Laboratory (NILL 1.0)TM Building Assessment index to serve as a guideline for the design and construction of laboratory buildings using nature as an inspiration and the analogy of human body systems.

This study aims to analyze Ukrainian proverbs, which are the word of wisdom and living philosophies of Ukrainians. It covers not only functions and styles of Ukrainian proverbs, but also techniques used in them. Since Ukrainian proverbs have a great variety of subjects, this study focuses on 10 main ones, that are recognized as important in Ukrainian life and frequently appear as a topic of proverb: customs and superstitions, history, weather, health, God and priest, truth and justice, the rich and the poor, family relationships, immigrant life, and Ukrainian life in Soviet period. This study introduces the proverbs most frequently recited among Ukrainians with translation and explains their characteristics.

Rivers Solomon’s Sorrowland (2021) can be read as a Gothic novel about Black trauma, and while this is certainly true, such an assessment overlooks its anarchist dimension and emancipatory potential. As articulated by Solomon, Black anarchism overcomes the limitations of white, European anarchism from within by contesting its attachment to the dualisms of modernity: as in New Materialist philosophies, the boundaries between human and nonhuman, and living and dead matter, are blurred. Introduction: Emergency medicine (EM) is a demanding specialty with high rates of physician burnout. As emergency physicians, we must stay healthy to promote healthy living, optimize our ability to care for our patients, extend our careers, and be there for our families. While we all desire a healthy lifestyle, maintaining one in practice can be difficult. We sought to investigate the strategies emergency physician employ to maintain and improve health and wellness while mitigating the professions stressors. Methods: From April 2015 to July 2017, forty-three wellness champions from Canada, the USA, and Australia were identified using a snowball sampling technique. Each participant answered 5 introductory questions and 8 productivity questions pertaining to health and wellness. These were transcribed and loaded to a publicly accessible blog, ALiEM.com, as part of the Healthy in EM series. Two investigators reviewed the transcripts using inductive methods and a grounded theory approach to generate themes and subthemes using coding software, NVivo (Burlington, Massachusetts), until saturation was achieved. Consensus between investigators (JC, ZP) established the master code and audit trail. An external audit by investigators (TC, BT) not involved with the initial analysis was performed to ensure reliability. Results: Major themes including diet, sleep, exercise and social activities were coded and further subcategorized along with perspectives, habits, personal philosophies, and career diversity. These themes translated across both professional and personal aspects of participants lives. For example, the pre-shift and post-shift strategies often included some form of regimented activities-of-daily-living that required discipline to adhere to at work and home. Conclusion: Our findings show the importance of homeostasis in the professional and personal realm among expert emergency medicine physicians. Among healthy emergency physicians, diet, sleep, and exercise patterns intertwined with perspectives, habits, personal philosophies, and social activities contributed to maintenance of wellness.

The paper distinguishes between a free form of modernity and an ideological form of modernity, whereby the latter can also be called modernism. Free modernity aims at realising the modern, i.e. that which responds to the needs of the present and realises what corresponds to the state-of-the-art. Modernism as an ideology, however, believes in "the" ultimate modernism, in one final modern age of reason. The modernist Hegelian and Marxist philosophies of history and of dialectical metaphysics have come to an end. It demonstrates that we are living in a post-modern age that gives a new freedom for the Christian interpretation of history and for the theological and personalist form of metaphysics.

Practice-led, somatic research comes to understand fascia not only as structure, but also as a relational mediator ranging from the interior to the exterior. Reflections from this research also reveal fascia as an experienced otherness within us, a matrix modulating inside/outside perception through varying fascial tone. Embedded in the philosophies of feminist scholar Karen Barad and ecologist Timothy Morton, experiential movement of fascia discerns ‘nature’, and thus the body itself, as queer. Fascia connects with-in and with-outer and acknowledges strange strangers living within us. Dissolving the binary of the inside/outside leads to an understanding of the body in its surrounding as ecological, interdependent part of its habitat.

AbstractThis paper explores the transformation of a dualistic mind-body relationship as reported by participants in a recent qualitative study involving modern yoga and meditation practitioners. The stories of the practitioners focused strongly on transforming a body-self that was configured as a result of living a life in Western cultural contexts where philosophies of mind-body dualisms were taken to underpin daily practices. The practitioners described a well-trodden somatic pedagogical pathway towards liberation from domination that they called ‘physicalisation’. The paper illustrates physicalisation as cultivation of body-mind unity and de-identification before exploring the three dimensions of the practitioners' embodied spatiotemporal transformations that we have termed: empowerment, mustery and negating domination.

The life and work of North American composer Stuart Saunders Smith (1948) have shown features reminiscent of the 19th century philosophical movement known as New England Transcendentalism. Here I discuss how ideas divulged by Transcendentalism and transcendentalist philosophies, in particular oneness, freethinking, anti-materialism, anti-technologism, and silence reflect in Smith’s life stances and compositional process. Based on a belief that oneness binds all living beings via a universal soul, Smith seeks to symbolically unify composer, performer, and audience through the use of silence and a compositional technique called co-existence. In turn, anti-materialism and anti-technologism manifest musically in his frugal use of instrumentation, and in his refusal to write for electronics while evoking naturalistic themes, respectively.

It has been charged that transformative learning theory is stagnating; however, theoretical insights from relational ontologies offer significant possibilities for revitalizing the field. Quantum physics has led to a deep revision in our understanding of the universe moving away from the materialism and mechanism of classical physics. Some scientists observe that this shifting view of reality is catalyzing a profound cultural transformation. They have also noted significant intersections between the New Science and North American Indigenous philosophies as well as Eastern mysticism, all relational ontologies. These intersections as well as the theory of agential realism of Karen Barad, feminist physicist, are used to propose a next generation of transformative learning theory, one that is embedded in ontologies of relationality. The author came to relational ontology through environmental and sustainability education. This fruitful cross-fertilization helps illuminate a transformative approach to sustainability education or transformative sustainability education—which has not yet been explicitly theorized. Relationality demands an ethical, ontological, and epistemological transformation. The six criteria that emerge in the overlap between quantum physics, living systems theory from ecology, and Indigenous philosophies can reframe our understandings of transformative education, particularly toward socially just and regenerative cultures, completing the work of unfinished justice and climate movements. Pertinent to adult educators, Naomi Klein (2014) asks, “History knocked on your door, did you answer?” (p. 466).

The term “time-plan” is introduced in the article to sum up the diversity of temporal processes described by Jakob von Uexküll (1864–1944) in the framework of the general Planmässigkeit of nature. Although Uexküll hardly had any connections with his contemporary philosophies of time, the theme of the subjective times and timing of the organisms forms an essential part of his umwelt theory. As an alternative to the dominance of evolutionary time in biological discussions, Uexküll took perceptual and developmental times of organisms as his natural scientific priorities. While discussing the characteristics of the latter, Uexküll departs from an epigenetic position. Discussion about perceptual time entails detecting the primary units of time (moments) as well as how the succession of moments results in the perception of movement. The last part of the article will explicate the significance of the “time plan” concept for biophilosophical discussions. It is suggested that the bioethical question rising from Uexküll’s works may take the following form: do other biological subjects besides humans have a right to their own timing?

I make no apology for what is by now a hackneyed title. It derives, of course, from Croce’s book on Hegel, and I choose it because I want to suggest that the question ‘What is living and what is dead in Marxism?’ is the right question to ask. The analytical approach is appropriate if it means distinguishing and discriminating between different aspects of Marxism, and refusing to reject or embrace it en bloc as a monolithic creed. However, this does not mean that Marxism can be chopped up into a number of disconnected theses, with a view to producing an inventory of those which are true and those which are false. Marxism claims to be a systematic theory, whose various elements hang together in an organised way. Some would say that this creates an unbridgeable gulf between Marxist and analytical philosophies. Nevertheless, though Marxism’s claim to be systematic should be taken seriously, there are different readings of the theory and of how its components are connected, and different versions will see different elements as central. This is where the careful discrimination of meanings and interpretations is needed. It is not simply a question of deciding whether each of the various elements, in isolation, is true or false, more a matter of deciding where the emphasis should lie if Marxism is to continue to illuminate our understanding of the social world. It is in this sense that we can talk about Marxism or any other theory as ‘living’ — not just as containing true assertions, but as being capable of playing a vital and creative role in human thought and action. In what version, then, if any, is Marxism a living philosophy?

The literature on storytelling organizations presents a rich tradition for studying both narratives and living stories. These two storytelling dimensions tends to be viewed in opposition to each other. This paper focus on a third dimension: antenarratives. Antenarratives have two distinct features: they tell the story of the future of the organization in advance of its arrival and, as part of this process, they resolve tensions between narratives and living stories. Applying Bakhtin’s notion of heteroglossia, the purpose of this paper is further to enlighten the antenarrative processes of bridging the gap between narratives and living stories in prospective sensemaking of the future of the organization. Taking into account the quantum turn within social and human sciences and philosophies, the paper aims at enriching our understanding of how human and non-human voices take part in antenarrative processes of creating organizational futures. Antenarratives are therefore further conceptualized in the context of the quantum age. By bringing to the fore essential ecological aspects of Bakhtin’s work and reading these aspects into his notion of heteroglossia, the paper offers a Bakhtinian-inspired lens through which antenarrative human-world relationships can be further enlightened. The paper suggests viewing the organization and its relationship with the environment as a living antenarrative medium creating future worlds in the quantum age. Furthermore, the paper suggests implications for the practice of managing the antenarrative living medium of creating new worlds. The paper advocates the inclusion of ethical, material, embodied and multimodal perspectives on storytelling, thereby advancing a storytelling philosophy in the quantum age.

Abstract This paper addresses the concept of play concerning human formation, especially as manifested in the philosophies of Gadamer and Schiller. Gadamer depicted understanding as an organic motion that unfolds through seeing differences and characterized play as a flexible back-and-forth movement or interplay between possibilities and transformations. Schiller structured play as the playful impulse similarly as an interactive moving force that connects the two seemingly oppositional impulses of reason and sensation and lets the two affect the other dialogically. Both Gadamer and Schiller suggest that play, as in essence an inter-play, orients us into seeing more possibilities of making a refreshing sense of our intellectual and perceptual abilities and thereby transfiguring our living being into richer and fuller meaningfulness.

Stoics and Epicureanism want to be juxtaposed as both contradictory, hostile and different Hellenistic Ethics but can be used as a way of how modern man seeks his happiness. Using several quotes from Epictetus, in the end this research wants to show that to achieve happiness humans can try not to make representations, talk about what is factual and act indifferently, while still paying attention to the logical aspect.

This article analyzes the conceptions of anticipation and invention in the philosophies of Henri Bergson and Gilbert Simondon. In doing so, I analyze the questions how futures are anticipated and what role technologies play in the anticipation and invention of the future. Technologies are increasingly used to predict, prescribe and control behavior. These technologies are based upon the ontological belief that reality is computable and predictable. With Bergson and Simondon, I aim to show that this ontology does not take the temporal structure and the anticipatory faculty of living beings into account. Anticipation is an essential activity of a living being in its milieu. In order to survive, living beings structure their milieu to make their future actions reliable. Images are central to this process. They are constantly evoked by and with practices. They are transformed and used to anticipate and imagine the future. Yet, these images are affectively charged and can be an expression of what Bergson calls “myth-making function” (fonction fabulatrice). While Bergson describes this function as a positive force, one can ask whether this force turns against itself in face of our contemporary climate crisis, digital technologies and the crisis of open democracies. An alternative is to understand and to construct technical objects as essentially open in analogy to the living being. This implies a conception of the human not as a fixed conception, but as an “open adventure” (Simondon 2016: 121)that constantly re-invents itself in relation with nature and technology.

This study aims to describe the reflection of the Dindang Maayun Anak song in the Banjar culture in South Kalimantan. The Dindang song contains linguistic units containing cultural functions and meanings in the Banjar community. Therefore, ethnolinguistic analysis was conducted through intralingual and extralingual equivalences. Subsequently, cultural semantic analysis is used to examine the cultural reflection in this study. The researchers recorded 53 stanzas of the dindang song, based on which 16 data were classified as words/terms, 9 data were classified as phrases, and 6 data were classified as sentences, reflecting local culture. The analysis showed that the Dindang Maayun Anak song reflects (1) the religious way of life-based on the Baiman, Bauntung, and Batuah philosophies as the implementation of Iman, Islam, and Ihsan teachings. (2) Trading, raising, and catching fish, alongside farming based on the economic system and livelihoods in the wetland, and (3) knowledge of nature, flora, and fauna. It also reflects the (4) parenting patterns based on the Baiman, Bauntung, and Batuah philosophies, (5) living equipment and technology that supports their economic system and livelihoods, (6) Banjar language as a lingua franca and means of expressing beliefs, knowledge, evaluation, and feelings. Furthermore, the Baiman, Bauntung, and Batuah philosophy is conceptualized differently by the traditional leader, Kesultanan Banjar (non-formal leader), formal (government) leader and modern education expert in South Kalimantan. The reflection of the three B’s is a prayer (for ordinary people), a motto (in a local government, and a school vision.

In this article, I analyze the relation between ontology and practical philosophy in Cicero’s work and the role Hellenistic philosophy plays within the work of Giorgio Agamben. I discuss the relation between life and ontology, between philosophy as a guide to living and philosophy as the study of being. Unlike philosophers who treat Hellenistic philosophy as a form of therapy (Nussbaum, Foucault, Hadot), I show how Agamben interprets Hellenistic philosophy as oppressive by turning the theory of being into an injunction of having-to-be. For Agamben, every philosophy implies a certain form of life, and it is thus impossible to distinguish between ontology and living. The aim of philosophy, therefore, is not to be therapeutic but rather to develop an ontology that will allow for humanity to live without oppression. Through a detailed reading of Cicero’s concept of “nature,” I develop the reading and critique of Cicero suggested by Agamben.Cet article analyse la relation entre l’ontologie et la philosophie pratique dans l’oeuvre de Cicéron et le rôle joué par la philosophie hellénistique dans l’oeuvre de Giorgio Agamben. Il discute la relation entre la vie et l’ontologie, entre la philosophie comme guide de savoir-vivre et la philosophie comme étude de l’être. Contrairement aux philosophes qui traitent la philosophie hellénistique comme une forme de thérapie (Nussbaum, Foucault, Hadot), je montre que Agamben interprète la philosophie hellénistique comme essentielle-ment oppressive en transformant la théorie de l'être en une injonction normative de devoir-être. Pour Agamben, toute philosophie implique une certaine forme de vie, rendant alors la distinction entre l’ontologie et la vie impossible. Ainsi, le but de la philosophie n'est pas d’être thérapeutique mais plutôt de développer une ontologie qui permettra à l’humanité de vivre sans oppression. Par une lecture du concept de la « nature » de Cicéron, je développe l’interprétation et la critique de Cicéron proposé par Agamben.

In order to propose further research into non-Western avant-gardes and modernist narratives, this paper explores the contributions of Japanese-American artist Yoko Ono to our understanding of the narratives of modernism and contemporary art. Ono’s work is examined through her interactions with both Japanese and American avant-garde artists and philosophies, thus using Ono’s life and work as one potential case study in demonstrating the important dialog between East and West which manifested into several important avant-garde movements and artworks. My paper further seeks to complicate the traditional Western-centric narratives of art history by acknowledging intersectional readings of works and artists’ histories, by looking at Ono’s unique experience as a Japanese woman living in America, eventually marrying a pop singer whose fame would affect her public image for decades.

The Bapeang Bugis is a community living in Bapeang village, Mentawa Baru district, Ketapang, East Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan Province. The Bugis migration took place in the early half of the 20th century, a migration on a large scale caused by the outbreak of the Bone war in 1908 and the DI/TII Kahar Muzakkar rebellion. The dominance of the Bugis in the religious, cultural, and economic sectors is due to their ability to adapt to other communities, especially with the Banjarese as the original inhabitants of Kalimantan. The Bugis has a number of advantages in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, maritime affairs, and trade, and has a high work ethic stemming from the cultural values of siri na pesse (self-respect and compassion) and other Bugis life philosophies.

In this article are compared the underpinning beliefs, ideas, and practices between Tibetan Buddhist philosophies, with Western understandings about mental suffering in living, and the nature of contextual issues that structure the recovery from such suffering. On the basis of this undertaking, in the study were explored the similarities and relationships of the Buddhist belief that it is possible to end the suffering in life, and then venture on “the path to happiness”, compared with a Western, post-modern narrative informed approach to psychotherapy for persons in relationship with mental suffering. The analysis of the historic and current belief systems has indicated similar philosophical and practical positioned relationships between Tibetan Buddhism’s Four Noble Truths, and current Western understandings of mental suffering, and a narrative informed approach to psychotherapy. These comparative constructs, that span many centuries, should provide supportive insights and considerations to current understanding of causes, and the nature of human responses to living experiences that initiate and maintain mental suffering. In addition, they should also promote confidence for discerning perceptions and support for person’s to deal effectively with phenomena resulting in mental suffering, with a narrative informed approach to psychotherapy.

Ayurveda considers dosha dhatu mala the root factor for a living body. Their normal functions maintain homeostasis in the living body, and their imbalance leads to disease. The word pitta is derived from the root word “Tap santape”, which refers to “Heat”. In the body, Agni and Pitta are considered identical entities. So, Pitta dosha can be one such body entity that helps in the “Biotransformation” by which the energy is produced. It is concerned with the process of conversion, consumption and any other changes that are taking place in the body. Acharya Sushruta was the first person to talk about Pancha pitta as Agni. All the sciences and philosophies, in one way or another, are searching for the ultimate truth of life. Health is essential to keep a person fit for work. Describing the healthy (swastika), Sushruta says the balance between various physical entities, Dosha, Dhatu, Mala, Agni, Atma, and Kendriya Manas, is necessary, where the Agni plays a prime role in maintaining the normalcy of all these entities. Acharya Sushruta was the first person to talk about Pancha pitta as Agni. Acharya Charaka classifies Pitta based on its different functions.

Abstract (sommario):
This article is aimed at elaborating a critical study of the philosophy of education in giving guiding principles and directives to knowledge concerning the aims of education by which they are actualized. Such a philosophy should necessarily give the basic principles to give an answer to the philosophical question, “What subject matter, experiences, and worthwhile activities are essential to realize the raison d’etre (reason for living) of the school?” For that reason, this article will focus more on eight major philosophies and theories of education:Idealism, Realism, Pragmatism, Perennialism, Essentialism, Progressivism, Reconstructionism, and Existentialism. These educational philosophical approaches are currently used in classrooms around the world and each of these schools has stood the test of time and has had a significant impact on the development of educational policies and practices; from curriculum development to teaching methods and from classroom management to evaluation techniques.

This article proposes ways in which the theories, philosophies, and techniques of Gestalt therapy can assist rehabilitation counselors to better understand traumatic brain injury (TBI). The article describes the central tenets of Gestalt therapy and its unique fit to TBI. Discussion focuses on how an appreciation of Gestalt therapy can assist rehabilitation counselors to understand and address the psychological, familial, and service system implications of TBI. A conceptual framework is presented on the pathways of maladjustment and adjustment to living with TBI from a Gestalt perspective. A central assumption of this model is that without intervention, the onset of TBI activates a process of maladjustment for many persons with TBI and their family caregivers expressed by fragmentation, unfinished business, and lack of self-awareness. The model underscores the importance of rehabilitation counselor attention on both individual and contextual levels.

AbstractObjective:With increasing research on the role of religion and spirituality in the well-being of cancer patients, it is important to define distinctly the concepts that researchers use in these studies.Method:Using the philosophies of Frege and James, this essay argues that the terms “religion” and “spirituality” denote the same concept, a concept that is identified with the Peace/Meaning subscale of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy — Spiritual Well-being Scale (FACIT-Sp).Results:The term “Religions” denotes the concept under which specific religious systems are categorized.Significance of results:This article shows how muddling these concepts causes researchers to make claims that their findings do not support, and it ends in suggesting that future research must include universal measures of the concept of religion/spirituality in order to investigate further the role of interventions in the spiritual care of people living with cancer.

The past couple of chiliads have incalculably borne testimony to philosophical contemplation, which have steered the ethical practices of business and management. The presented content is thus, ingrained on the roots of the premise that values and ethics are as germane as skills for the effectual management of organisations. Globally competitive, domestically indispensable and sustainable are those enterprises, which in the long run nurture the seeds of pragmatic ethics and canonical human values. The authors engage in a scholarly discourse to put together a holistic perspective of Vedantic ethical vision, springing from the roots of the pietistic Bhagavad Gita, and in so doing, validate the practical relevance of these principles to the substantive realm of business. This would unequivocally unveil the depths of ethical behaviour, which in all societies is persisting in going to seed. Momentous acumens on the subject of an enriched business that focuses on altering the face of organisational culture, hence zeroing in on vaster expansiveness and ethical chastity have also been shed valuable light on. The pursuit of this goal by bureaucrats and policymakers embraces the key to integral ethicality and sustainability by living out the ‘nyay’ and the ‘niti’.

Philosophies of civilisation, nation, globalisation, and localisation manifest in educational structuring, school hidden curricula, and subject areas like social studies or citizenship education. Additionally, media play a vital role in young people’s development of their identities and civic allegiances, apart from what takes place in schools. Media may complement or contradict messages about human living together and one’s place in living together provided in educational contexts. Given media’s impact, within and outside educational spaces, it would be counterproductive to not examine this impact if one wants to understand how students learn to live together in society. Appreciating the role of media in developing civic ideas can help to enhance strategies of civic education. It can also help to identify skills related to literacy, information processing, and social networking that align with effective development of critical thinking capacities in civic education. This article first explores theoretically how people learn through and engage with media. Next, it considers ways in which media can impact civic identities. It explores how media is impacted by and reflects messages related to civilisation, nationalism, globalization and localism. The article then discusses common ways of responding to media in education. Here, critical media literacy education is examined and reflected upon. Broader educational implications of the exploration are discussed in the conclusion.

Basil Bunting's Chomei at Toyama, a poetic adaptation of Kamo no Chōmei's thirteenth-century prose text Hōjōki (‘Account of a Ten-Foot-Square Hut’), has been positively received by such diverse figures as Hugh Kenner, Lorine Niedecker, and Philip Larkin. Bunting's version pivots on Chōmei's apparent scepticism towards the Buddhism he adopted when living in the hut. Previous critics have considered this depiction of Chōmei's scepticism to be in keeping with the original text. But, by comparing Bunting's version with Chōmei's Japanese, this discussion reveals fundamental difference between them. Bunting's interpretation is rooted in his own rejection of ‘idealistic’ philosophies in favour of an embrace of the world apprehended through the senses. His alterations, making Hōjōki more Poundian, derive from this aesthetic position. Bunting was influenced in this regard by his reading of Ezra Pound's conception of the Japanese as ‘thinking by images’ rather than ‘ideas’.
