Apres avoir defini et motie le choix du carnaval comme mode d'analyse comique et retrace brievement l'evolution du judaisme et de la judeite aux etats-unis, nous avons consacre la premiere partie de cette etude a la memoire historique juive avec un objectif double : situer le role et le statut de la femme dans la tradition juive et remonter aux sources du comique juif litteraire pour montrer les differentes representations d'epouses et ou de meres. La carnavalisation du pharmakos jewish mama, garante des institutions les plus sacres du judaisme et symbole d'une conscience collective depassee qui fonde son identite et dont sa descendance souhaite s'affranchir est etudiee-deuxieme et troisieme parties de l'ouvrage - en deux actes successifs, tels qu'ils ont ete ecrits au cours du puissant mouvement judeo-americain des annees soixante et soixante-dix. Que les fils (les auteurs masculins de la decennie soixante) mettent a mort le monstre vorace et castrateur ou que les filles (les auteurs feminins et feministes des annees soixante-dix) se representent sous les traits de la mere poursuivie par la malchance et l'echec, les deux actes de la parenthese carnavalesque se rejoignent et aboutissent a une meme destruction symbolique du moi. La derniere partie est sonsacree aux facettes linguistiques du processus carnavalesque visant a l'aneantissement du pharmakos
After defining and justifying the choice of carnival as a mode for analyzing comic and after briefly retracing the evolution of judaism and jewishness in the usa, we have dedicated the first part of this study to the jewish historic memory with a double target : identify the role and status of women in the jewish tradition and go back to the sources of jewish literary comic to show the different representations of wives and or mothers. The carnavalization of the pharmakos jewish mama, guarantor of the most sacred institutions of judaism and symbol af an archaic collective conscience which serves as a base to its identity and whose descendants want to free themselves from, has been studied in two successive acts, as they were written within the powerful jewish-american literary movement of the sixties and the seventies. Wether the sons kill the castrating and voracious monster or whether the daughters depict themselves as a mother pursued by mishaps and failures, both acts of the carnival merge and result in the same symbolic destruction of the self. The last part is devoted to the linguistic aspects of the carnivalizing process aiming at the annihilation of the pharmakos

Cette thèse se penche sur la question du travail de deuil dans la littérature juive américaine de la seconde moitié du vingtième siècle, prenant appui sur la fiction brève de quatre auteurs majeurs : Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, Cynthia Ozick et Isaac Bashevis Singer. Elle évoque les modalités judaïques du rapport à la mémoire à la lumière du corpus, mais aussi l'inscription de l’œuvre de nos auteurs dans un contexte marqué par un ensemble de deuils singuliers, mais aussi par le deuil du collectif à l'ère post-Shoah, qui passe par la mise en scène d'une langue en deuil d'elle-même
This thesis examines the question of mourning in American Jewish literature of the second half of the twentieth century, drawing on the short fiction of four major authors: Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, Cynthia Ozick and Isaac Bashevis Singer. It discusses the Jewish imperative of memory in the light of the corpus, and contextualizes the work of our authors and their reference not only to family losses but also to collective mourning in the post-Shoah era, which involves shaping of a language of mourning
