Gradually, digital technologies are becoming more important in research on sociocultural phenomena. Equipment projects are developing in all the social sciences and the humanities (SSH) and movements advocating an instrumental revolution are multiplying. This thesis proposes to question the advent of a digitally equipped research in the SSH on the basis of a general reflection on the links between science, technology and writing. What are the epistemological and political issues that underlie these digital instrumentation logics as they institute new writing techniques at the heart of research practices? The thesis is composed of three main parts. The first part questions the fundamental relationships between technical instruments and scientific knowledge. It is also about estimating the specificities of a communication approach to scientific instrumentation. The second part proposes a critical exploration of the discourses that accompany these transformations by focusing on projects from two major currents in the field of digitally equipped research in the SSH: the "digital humanities" and the "digital methods". What promises, what "imaginaires", what representations of science do these research practices renewal projects by digital technology contain? But also what "epistemological obstacles" do they encounter? Based on a theory of digital writing, and on a techno-semiotic analysis approach, the thir part questions the forms and powers of the digital instrumentation. On a morphological level, what do the design and implementation of such instruments consist of? On a political level, what are the normative effects of these "dispositifs" on the epistemology of the disciplines that seize them?

This thesis offers tools for a better understanding of the concept of surveillance in today’s society, based on its portrayal in utopias and dystopias. We notice a ubiquitous surveillance in every political regime depicted. This surveillance expresses itself in so many different ways that none of the numerous models formulated across the social sciences allow for an exhaustive account. Our goal is to offer a comprehensive theoretical tool that explains that heterogeneity. We base this tool on M. Foucault’s panopticon, while taking into account and going beyond its different criticisms. Our contemporary panopticons should not be seen as buildings with a singular architecture, but rather as abstract relations called “panoptic” because of their asymmetrical structure. Therefore, the subject cannot be certain that he/she is actually or metaphorically being monitored. Therefore, he/she is bound to internalize the idea of a watcher, to act according to a fiction, the “I believe I am being watched.” We examine the semiotic consequences of this fiction: how surveillance can create a new form of life, but also how the monitored can create new ways to inhabit the world by choosing to resist and to disappear. This literary research is a form of resistance in itself. Through “essays on literary semiotics of the social world,” our analysis of literary works gives us the means to develop a critical outlook on contemporary socio-political events

This study reviews the history of the relationship between literature and the social sciences in France during the 20th century from the vantage point of a particular discipline, ethnology. It is a striking fact that several members of the first generation of ethnographers published two books, one “literary”, one “scientific”. The most famous cases are those of Michel Leiris, author of L’Afrique fantôme (1934) and of La Langue secrète des Dogons de Sanga (1938), and Claude Lévi-Strauss, who wrote both La Vie familiale et sociale des Indiens Nambikwara (1948) and Tristes tropiques (1955). There is further proof of this inter-disciplinary confrontation between science and literature in the work of Alfred Métraux, Marcel Griaule, and Jacques Soustelle, among others. The first part of this study considers the foundation of the ethnology; a second part locates the discipline in the context of travel-writing in the twentieth century. The central part of the thesis is then devoted to an historical and epistemological investigation which interprets the emergence of the social sciences in terms of a final prolongation of the crisis of “Belles-Lettres”, the crisis which began at the turn of the nineteenth century (during the years in which the opposition between science and literature began to crystallise). What is at stake here is a complex process whereby "the artist was dispossesed by the scientist" (Lanson), whereby the social sciences came to adapt the knowledge of man hitherto reserved to literature and so dissolve the ties between literature and anthropology that had formerly been sustained by rhetoric. A fourth and final part of the thesis qualifies this pessimistic assessment by analysing in more detail the modes of articulation that, in practice, may relate literary writing and scientific speech

The social sciences which deal with the Maghreb were chiefly established in the context of colonisation. The present work proposes a semantic description of a recent phase of these sciences. Through a corpus based on four texts, the following prominent authors were selected: Charles-André Julien, Mostéfa Lacheraf, Pierre Bourdieu and Germaine Tillion. All of them experienced the transition from the colonial to the post colonial period. After a critical analysis of their texts, grounded on constructed interpretative trajectories, the dissertation establishes the continuity of some "doxical configurations" inherited from past forms of knowledge. Five types of rewriting processes are distinguished: geographic, ecological, nationalist, mediterraneanist and mythological ones

Absent from froissart's chronicles is the clear distinction between so-called historiographic truth and fiction. Typical for its epoch, the work appears to take its place within the larger current of moral and didactic literature of the second half of the fourteenth century. At the center of this research is, then, froissart as a witness of his times and all the attendant perspectives that this entails. In the chronicles, which are a literary reconstruction of the countryside, we discern what the chronicler makes of the n otion of territory and of the distinction between poor and rich countries. The castle and the town are the principal sit es where power is seen to be exercised; their description permits this power to be symbolized and thus explains their po litical prestige. The character of the prince, his education and his councilors find themselves at the heart of a number of episodes. The references to clothing, to food, to horses, and to the hunt are seen as elements constituting a symbolic representation of society. The peasants and townspeople, notably those in revolt, as well as the people of the outlining areas of the times are seen as essentially a danger for the established order and hierarchies. The chronicles of froissart reflect a tension between a literary desire for cohesion in the world and the very disorder of the epoch witnessed by the chronicler himself

This dissertation concerns the relationship between fiction and history in the work of Argentinian writerAndrés Rivera (1928‐ ). En esta dulce tierra, La revolución es un sueño eterno, El amigo de Baudelaire, La sierva, El farmer and Ese manco Paz can be regarded as « acts of imaginative creation » relating to somecircumstances, processes and events of Argentina’s national past, mainly of 19th century. Our aim is to demonstrate that, in these novels, there is a poetics of the subjectivity which yields some specifically fictional ways of « thinking about History ». Our concept of subjectivity doesn’t relate only to biased views about the past ; it also refers to the experiences and the movements of the inner world which are simulated by the characters, and also to the fictional transpositions of the author’s self. All these elements converge in Rivera’s litterary imagination about the past and they come from the earliest tensions of his writing : the dilemmas of the Latin‐American revolutionnary intellectuals, the conflict between making litterature more modern or more political ; this is the reason why we start our study with a panoramic view of Rivera’s short stories and novels published between the 50’s and the 70’s. Secondly, we describe the features (poetic maturations, formal aspects) of what we could call the historical imaginative style of Rivera ; finally, we consider the ways of « reading » Argentina’s national past and the ways of understanding History related to those stylistic features ; in this context, we take into account several themes specific to Rivera’s litterary universe which relate to the subjectivity: power, sexuality, authoritarianism and revolution

Tomás Eloy Martínez, an Argentinian journalist and novel writer, rewrites the History of Argentina through his work. He rewrites this history by playing with words - by manipulating collective History, manipulating the Other, its own history and identity, even its physical reality -. Thus the line between fiction and reality vanishes progressively and the power of language (which allows for dominating the Other) is expressed as a “ dual of narrative versions ” between fiction and History. The author creates alternative realities, based mainly on the subjectivity of the perception that characters can have of the world surrounding them. Language is therefore a tool for power, but the power struggles in Martínez’s work also show that the object of this very power often is the body of characters who are victims of a certain number of torturers who persecute them in order to dominate or annihilate them

This thesis analyses the national identity crisis at the turn of the 20th century as stakes of intellectual rivalry in French literature. By placing the discourse of "modernity" in a historical viewpoint, surprising similarities are revealed between the answers proposed by philosophers (particularly Bergson) and writers (Bourget, Barrès, then Ghéon, Gide and Proust). Purely aesthetic and ideological frames of reference are challenged as incapable of explaining the most basic junction of literature and politics: the one resulting from the construction of identity representations. The perceived limits of aesthetic, philosophical and political domains of the era became the instrument of power struggles establishing the legitimacy of the intellectual elite. . .

Title: « The Political Representation of Power and its Drift in Literary Work by Maxime N’Débéka ». This thesis is a monographic study which explores the thematic of political power in six texts by the Congolese writer: Le Président (1982), Les Lendemains qui chantent (1983), Equatorium (1987), Vécus au miroir (1991), Le Diable à la longue queue (2000) et Sel-piment à la braise (2003). After having presented the various analytical categories of the selected “duchetian” socio-critical method, this dissertation highlights a literary analysis of political power by taking into account a certain number of cultural, sociological and psychological factors which in one way or another influence its perception and management within a geographical space and institutional framework representative of Sub-Saharan Africa. By putting forward the typological differences as well as the trajectories borrowed by the “Fathers of independences” and the “Guides of the revolution” in order to ascend to power, this thesis shows how, after officially achieving independence from colonial rule, African political “elites” very often driven by the lure of gain and the appropriation of privileges have set up authoritarian and mind-numbing political regimes which led them to drift

The aim was to review French discourse from the dawn of the twenty-first century ; more particulary in the following texts : The Initiated, The cry that you make won't awaken nobody, The Festival of Masks, After the silence, In waiting for the vote of the Wild Animals, The sound of Inheritance, The Identity Card and The one and a helf lives. In the end, after considering the question of traditional powers from each and every perspective, it is the problem of identity, in all its facets, which has been dealt with. Seen from this point of view, the (written and spoken) word has been pinpointed as a source of power in consideration of its social and literary aspect. The question of myths and their stylistic effect of their images have allowed us to highlight the way in which all the elements constituting ancient knowledge have been handed down over time. Myths, which, by means of the narrative structure of their texts, have revealed how contemporary literary works, destroyed by contemporary societies, are affected and they contribute also to to the breaking down of traditional orders. Following on from that, there is an attempt to legitimise Frecnh writings by means of the power of words, as writing of rupture. In order to do this, it was necessary to highlight the structural elements which would help us to define French texts on the basis of their linguistic elements. Subsequently, words have been denoted as a force which generates meaning. This semantic self-generation has helped to reveal the instability of certain characters and the apparent loss of authority bt patriarchs such as Rèdiwa or Makaya, charged with the safe-keeping and the transmission of ancient values. The internal conflict found in French black African imaginative works, often linked to the confrontation between tradition and modernity, is also that which has allowed us to read cultural phenomena differently and has led to the challenging of traditional knowledge. Finally, the entire French-speaking world, or at least that which is mentioned in the third part of this work, eventually reveals itself to be, in one way or an other, based almost exactly on the ancients' model. The analysis carried out during this work has shown how the political arena and the traditional axis of power became interdependent. Political figure circulated freely, moving from one area to another in their pursuit of meaning, without the slightest apprehension. This pursuit of meaning or of identity has led political heroes, seeking to flee everyday difficulties, to make us of the ebb and flow of symbolism and politics in order to construct new identities, new beliefs, and in order to construct a new basis for the relationships with the other, with society and with the universe. If the reading about figures of traditional power has been thus effective, it is because this model has become the matrix of French writings. This attachment to values has given the issue of modernity a dual quelity : on the one hand in terms of being a national treatment of the subject liberated from the pitfalls of nature ; and on the other hand, one which is perceived as the establisment of the new tradition. In each of these two cases, French novelists have tried to make their characters and their writting adhere to this vision of things

The author offers a study of the "Celtic bestiary" which is understood here as the sum of the reel species above all; an overall view of the function and role of animals in medieval Celtic literature will be given, analysing especially the mythological, heroic and hagiographical texts. The evolution of the role of antique and medieval cult animals will be dealt with. The symbolism of the other species will be studied as well. The corpus analysed here – medieval Celtic literature - will be presented, references will be made to other civilizations (Indo- European and others). The medieval tradition will be compared with the folklore of premodern times. Several aspects linked with the animal world will be dealt with as well: the complex question of shamanism and totemism and their applicability to Celtic beliefs; animal sounds and music and their relation to human music; animal metamorphosis, animal metaphors, faunal onomastic and anthroponomy including animal terminology as well as the classification / taxonomy of the animal world. The second part is a catalogue of the species known to the medieval Celts; their role and symbolism will be briefly discussed. The third part consists of an analysis of the bestiary contained in a well-known Breton hagiographical text: the Life of St. Malo. Some of the elements studied here clearly show that the medieval Breton literary tradition belongs to the Celtic insular tradition, together with the literature of Ireland, the Isle of Man, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall

Argentinean writer Andrés Rivera’s refusal to consider some of his novels as being historical is the starting point of our reflection. In this work we approach the relations between history and fiction, the evolutions of historiography as well as those of the historical novel. The proliferation of historical novels in Latin America in the 1980’s and the 1990’s in particular, and the evolutions in the style and the themes of these novels have brought many critics to look into the phenomenon and to study the characteristics of what they have called the « new historical novel », « the contemporary historical novel » or more « the post-modern historical novel ». The formation of our corpus of novels or short stories by Rivera is based on Seymour Menton’s definition ; a novel is historical if the action takes place in a past that the author did not live. Thus, we chose the fictions in which the diegesis takes place between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, which matches key periods of the Argentinean history : the May Revolution (« La revolución es un sueño eterno »), the civil wars and the period of Rosas (« En esta dulcetierra », « El farmer » and « Ese manco Paz »), the rise of the rural middle classes in the 1880's (« El amigo de Baudelaire » and « La sierva »), the 1920's (« Elprofundo Sur » and « Hay que matar »). Through this corpus, we intend to analyze the reading of the Argentinean history offered by Rivera, the notion of history drawn from it and the rewriting of history based on fiction he proposes
