Abstract (sommario):
Tiling the Land and Types of Crops in the Province of Verona: a Reading of the Italian-Swiss Atlas Almost a century after the beginning of the linguistic and ethnographic investigation by Paul Scheuermeier and the other collectors, the Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of Italy and Southern Switzerland (Sprach- und Sachatlas Italiens und der Südschweiz) still sets a milestone in the study of the Romance linguistic varieties in the Italian peninsula, at the crossroads between dialectology, linguistic geography and ethnography and between “words” and “things” (Wörter und Sachen). This paper, without any claim for completeness, provides a critical reading of some linguistic maps concerning tiling the land and types of crops, taking as a geographical reference the territory of the province of Verona and the measuring/recording points selected by the compilers of the Italian-Swiss Atlas, which are significant from a linguistic point of view. The comparison between the lexical outcomes of the Veronese dialect and those of the other Venetian and Gallo-Italic dialects points out some evidence about the spatial distribution of linguistic facts and the mechanism of onomasiological innovations in a specific portion of the Romance linguistic domain. This operation, in full respect of the methodological pattern of the Italian-Swiss Atlas, comes along with ethnographic issues regarding the cultural and socio-economic background of linguistic phenomena.

Abstract (sommario):
Il romanzo d’un maestro by Edmondo De Amicis: preliminary investigations of language and its evolution The paper proposes a linguistic investigation of the first half of Il romanzo d’un maestro by Edmondo De Amicis. From the graphic, phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic point of view, a comparison is made between the printed edition from 1900 (the last published during the author’s lifetime), with the first edition from 1890 and an autographed version of the text, conserved at the L. Lagorio Civic Library in Imperia. The article frames the changes that took place within De Amicis’s theory and linguistic practise as well as in the linguistic landscape and in the grammatical and lexicographic reflection of his contemporaries. The linguistic choices of De Amicis have almost always been compared with those of Manzoni’s Quarantana: De Amicis is Manzonian, but not slavish, and with an autonomy of views in the formulation of linguistic-didactic proposals characterized by the use of contemporary Florentine which dissolves into classic Tuscan and, to a limited extent, in the use of the dialect. In Romanzo d’un maestro there is therefore a conciliatory linguistic eclecticism, also recognizable in the pages of Idioma gentile: although the Manzonian model is the preferred one, its openness towards alternative models dampens the most radical implications of the Master’s thought, in agreement with those who recognized the moderate character of De Amicis’s linguistic choices.

Abstract (sommario):
- In this paper I explore the consistency of an idea of language structures as both universal in their nature and empirical in their genesis. To this aim, I assume the theory of the parts of speech as a case study. I proceed from a brief historical reconstruction of 20th-century theories of grammatical categories to an analysis of the semantics of the parts of speech, with particular emphasis on Ronald Langacker's philosophy of grammar. Finally I focus on the theory of prepositions in order to explore the relations between language and perception and the function of perceptual schemas at the basis of linguistic categories. Keywords: Linguistic universals, Parts of speech, Perceptual schemas, Cognitive linguistics, Prepositions, Philosophy of grammar.Parole chiave: Universali linguistici, Parti del discorso, Schemi percettivi, Linguistica cognitiva, Preposizioni, Filosofia della grammatica.

Abstract This invited response to a piece by LaPolla, published in issue 39/2 of LTBA, addresses both LaPolla’s misrepresentations of the history of linguistics and his flawed understanding of historical linguistics. The history of linguistic thought with regard to the Tibeto-Burman or Trans-Himalayan language family vs. the Indo-Chinese or “Sino-Tibetan” family tree model is elucidated and juxtaposed against the remarkable robustness of certain ahistorical myths and the persistence of unscientific argumentation by vocal proponents of the Sino-Tibetanist paradigm, such as LaPolla.

Abstract (sommario):
This thematic issue of Linguistik online is dedicated to Contrastive linguistics for the language pair Italian-German. The contributions collected here deal with Italian-German language comparison from different points of view. The common feature of all of them is a corpus-oriented approach. Using authentic attestations from different linguistic sources, the linguistic structures of both languages are analysed and compared with each other. The granular and fine-grained comparison enabled the authors to work out interesting results not only in the fields of morphology and syntax, but also for pragmatics, and text and discourse linguistics for both languages, which can be profitably used in foreign language didactics, theoretical linguistics and translation studies.

Abstract (sommario):
Evaluating Italian L2 in the plurlingual school. The interpretation of the linguistic data, between perceptions and uses The paper illustrates a study developed from two projects carried out in two different primary school contexts: the first, in which plurilingualism represents a social fact (Autonomous Province of Bolzano); the second, in which plurilingualism constitutes an individual characteristic derivable from a migratory background (Scandicci). The study proceeds from the qualitative analysis of data collected by a sociolinguistic questionnaire - which preceded the administration of an Italian language test - aimed at detecting the linguistic uses and perceptions of the informants on the Italian language. The paper aims at reflecting on the main features of the linguistic landscape of learners placed in a bi-communal bilingualism context or with a migration background. Particular attention will be paid to the potential effects of plurilingual competence in the linguistic performance of learners for whom the Italian language represents a feature of a wider linguistic space.

Grammaticalization (GR) is a unidirectional historical process of changes in linguistics in which items with lexical or less grammatical content start acting as grammatical items throughout time, abstractizing and strengthening its meaning as for the speaker’s expressiveness. Cognitive mechanisms such as metaphor and metonymy act in this process of change, whereas they cause meaning abstractization and syntactic recategorization induced by the linguistic context. Besides, according to Traugott (1999), there are two mechanisms involved in the semantic change that keeps up with the GR which are subjectivization and intersubjectivization. Meanings become more focused on the speaker’s belief/attitude in relation to the listener through both mechanisms. Considering this vision and based on synchronic and diachronic data from Portuguese, the present work aims at researching the process of change responsible for syntactic and semantic alterations (pragmatizing meaning) of the concessive conjunction embora, which is a particle originated from the adverbial clause of time em boa hora, used to wish good luck in the XV Century. By means of this research it was possible to reconstruct diachronic usages of embora throughout Portuguese history, to learn about the context(s) that was(were) responsible for changes suffered by the item, and to find historical explanations for the usage in the current synchrony. Beyond that, some hypothesis related to unidirectionality and the origins of concessive conjunctions were also checked. In order to reach this aim, the present work also verified the different synchronic usages of embora in spoken and written Portuguese to find tips about the current behavior that can help in historical description.

Dunham, Joel Robert William. "The online linguistic database : software for linguistic fieldwork". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/51636.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The documentation and analysis of endangered languages is a core component of the linguistic endeavour. Language consultants and linguistic researchers collaborate to generate a variety of data which in turn fuel theoretical discovery and language revitalization. This dissertation describes and evaluates a piece of software designed to facilitate new, and enhance existing, collaboration, documentation, and analysis. But beyond this, it argues for the value of a certain methodological approach to linguistics broadly construed, one in which computation is key and where provisions are made for collaboration, data-sharing and data reuse. The Online Linguistic Database (OLD) is open source software for creating web applications that facilitate collaborative linguistic fieldwork. The OLD allows fieldworkers to continue doing what they are already doing—eliciting, transcribing, recording, and analyzing forms and creating data sets and papers with them—but collaboratively. This point should not be understated: though practises are changing, linguistic fieldwork currently involves a loose network of relatively isolated practitioners and data sets; simply creating the infrastructure for collaboration and data-sharing is half the battle. The other half is creating features and conveniences that make the software worth using. In this domain, the OLD provides automated feedback on lexical consistency of morphological analyses, sophisticated search, the creation and (structural) searching of arbitrarily many corpora and treebanks, and the specification and computational implementation of models of the lexicon, phonology, and morphology, upon which are built practical morphological parsers. The dissertation describes the OLD, motivating its design decisions and arguing that it has the potential to contribute positively to the achievement of the three core goals of linguistic fieldwork, namely documentation, research, and language revitalization. Particular attention is paid to the practical and research-related advantages of the morphophonological modelling capability with examples and evaluations of morphological parsers created for the Blackfoot language.

Abstract (sommario):
Four studies were conducted in which three sets of tasks were devised which tapped in a standard format, progressively refined, nonlinguistic versus linguistic processes in speech processing. The third set of tasks gave the clearest results. In it, male and female franco-phone subjects of different ages and of varying degree of knowledge of English were tested. Three sets of consonant contrasts were used. A dichotomization into two separate processes was possible by finding expected differential patterns of development for the two tasks; we were able to postulate that the two processes were non-linguistic versus linguistic by finding expected specific patterns of development, specific patterns of sex by age similarities and differences, differential patterns of correlations between degree of bilingualism and consonant contrasts, and unexpectedly a different pattern of performance on one contrast, all according to task. The results are discussed mainly in relation to other experiments on "the phonetic mode".

Atwell, Eric Steven. "Corpus linguistics and language learning : bootstrapping linguistic knowledge and resources from text". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2008. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/7504/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This submission for the award of the degree of PhD by published work must: “make a contribution to knowledge in a coherent and related subject area; demonstrate originality and independent critical ability; satisfy the examiners that it is of sufficient merit to qualify for the award of the degree of PhD.” It includes a selection of my work as a Lecturer (and later, Senior Lecturer) at Leeds University, from 1984 to the present. The overall theme of my research has been bootstrapping linguistic knowledge and resources from text. A persistent strand of interest has been unsupervised and semi-supervised machine learning of linguistic knowledge from textual sources; the attraction of this approach is that I could start with English, but go on to apply analogous techniques to other languages, in particular Arabic. This theme covers a broad range of research over more than 20 years at Leeds University which I have divided into 8 sub-topics: A: Constituent-Likelihood statistical modelling of English grammar; B: Machine Learning of grammatical patterns from a corpus; C: Detecting grammatical errors in English text; D: Evaluation of English grammatical annotation models; E: Machine Learning of semantic language models; F: Applications in English language teaching; G: Arabic corpus linguistics; H: Applications in Computing teaching and research. The first section builds on my early years as a lecturer at Leeds University, when my research was essentially a progression from my previous work at Lancaster University on the LOB Corpus Part-of-Speech Tagging project (which resulted in the Tagged LOB Corpus, a resource for Corpus Linguistics research still in use today); I investigated a range of ideas for extending and/or applying techniques related to Part-of-Speech tagging in Corpus Linguistics. The second section covers a range of co-authored papers representing grant-funded research projects in Corpus Linguistics; in this mode of research, I had to come up with the original ideas and guide the project, but much of the detailed implementation was down to research assistant staff. Another highly productive mode of research has been supervision of research students, leading to further jointly-authored research papers. I helped formulate the research plans, and guided and advised the students; as with research-grant projects, the detailed implementation of the research has been down to the research students. The third section includes a few of the most significant of these jointly-authored Corpus Linguistics research papers. A “standard” PhD generally includes a survey of the field to put the work in context; so as a fourth section, I include some survey papers aimed at introducing new developments in corpus linguistics to a wider audience.

STEPHENS, DEBORAH ANNE. "LINGUISTIC ASPECTS OF CODESWITCHING AMONG SPANISH/ENGLISH BILINGUAL CHILDREN (SOCIOLINGUISTICS, PSYCHOLINGUISTICS, APPLIED LINGUISTICS)". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/188166.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Codeswitching between languages is a uniquely bilingual mode of communication. The purpose of this dissertation is to enhance the current body of knowledge dealing with the phenomenon by analysing samples of speech produced by twenty-six Spanish/English bilingual children ranging in age from eight to twelve. Methods of analysis include theoretical linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and educational linguistics. A discussion of relevant codeswitching research covering the past thirty years is presented. The data were collected during a reading study focusing on miscue analysis. The children read stories in English and retold them in both Spanish and English. The analysis considers the data from the four previously mentioned points of view. The linguistic analysis looks at the locations of switched constituents within the sentence and the frequency with which those constituents are switched. The data of this study are compared with that of other researchers, and a consideration of a formal grammar of codeswitching is presented. The sociolinguistic analysis addresses the effect of social and stylistic variables on codeswitching. The psycholinguistic analysis of codeswitching covers lexical storage, editing phenomena, and developmental aspects. Finally, some aspects of the education of bilinguals are considered by analysing the effect of the printed word on language switching and dialect shifting . The application of the results of the analysis to both theoretical issues and practical concerns is explored along with suggested areas for future research. The analyses show that young children's codeswitching initially favors less complex structures and is influenced by few social variables. As they grow older, they become more comfortable with switching grammatically complex structures, and they become aware of a greater variety of social factors. A separate grammar is not necessary for a complete description of codeswitching; a modified interdependance model of the two grammars can account for the codeswitching mode. Lastly, the written language becomes part of the speech situation in the classroom and affects the choice of language or dialect spoken.

Halliwell, Joe. "Linguistic probability theory". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29135.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A theory of linguistic probabilities as is patterned after the standard Kolmogorov axioms of probability theory. Since fuzzy numbers lack algebraic inverses, the resulting theory is weaker than, but generalizes its classical counterpart. Nevertheless, it is demonstrated that analogues for classical probabilistic concepts such as conditional probability and random variables can be constructed. In the classical theory, representation theorems mean that most of the time the distinction between mass/density distributions and probability measures can be ignored. Similar results are proven for linguistic probabilities. From these results it is shown that directed acyclic graphs annotated with linguistic probabilities (under certain identified conditions) represent systems of linguistic random variables. It is then demonstrated these linguistic Bayesian networks can utilize adapted best-of-breed Bayesian network algorithms (junction tree based inference and Bayes’ ball irrelevancy calculation). These algorithms are implemented in Arbor, an interactive design, editing and querying tool for linguistic Bayesian networks. To explore the applications of these techniques, a realistic example drawn from the domain of forensic statistics is developed. In this domain the knowledge engineering problems cited above are especially pronounced and expert estimates are commonplace. Moreover, robust conclusions are of unusually critical importance. An analysis of the resulting linguistic Bayesian network for assessing evidential support in glass-transfer scenarios highlights the potential utility of the approach.

Abstract (sommario):
It is not possible to deny the value of the ancient Arabic linguistic heritage, and the efforts of the ancient Arab scholars, in their various linguistic studies - in general and morphology in particular - but we have always been so proud of it But in understanding and knowing modern linguistic studies, and trying to benefit from them in the Arabic language lesson, we deserve praise for every effort. Likewise, it can be said that the findings of modern linguists contributed to the understanding and knowledge of many linguistic phenomena that were marred by some complexity and lack of clarity. Accordingly, the research will seek to present the basic concepts of studying the morphological level of modern linguists, according to one of the figures of contemporary linguistic thought, Dr. Ali Abdel Wahed Wafi. The research traced the phenomena and issues related to morphology that he touched on in his book (Linguistics), and balanced them with the studies of other modern linguists, so that the research is divided into an introduction and two chapters, and then the conclusion: Introduction: Dr. Ali Abdel Wahed Wafi and his book Linguistics - Research Focus - In Briefs. The first topic: includes the morphological level and its relationship to morphology. While the second came under the title: The morphological level and its relationship to the division of human languages. And a conclusion in which the most important findings of the research.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The article sets out to show that the choice of methodology as well as the elaboration of new research procedures depends first and foremost on the tasks set, the scientific problem to be considered as well as the scholar’s research experience and his ‘feel of the language material’. The scientific paradigm or trend a linguist belongs (or states he belongs) to cannot be viewed as a decisive factor in the choice to be made as the role of the paradigm mainly consists in focusing the scholars’ attention on a certain type of language material, or on particular principles of dealing with language material. A comparison of methods of semantic analysis in structural linguistics and cognitive linguistics makes it possible to conclude that though it is generally assumed that with the emergence of a new linguistic paradigm, a methodology is to be worked out each time anew. Many methods of cognitive research are rooted in the analytical procedures adopted in the structural approach to language. One can observe a certain similarity between the distribution analysis, the componential analysis based on definitions, the immediate constituent analysis practised in structural linguistics and frame semantics and conceptual integration procedures used in cognitive linguistic studies. It is also noteworthy that even minimal changes introduced into the original structuralist setup may result in a methodological shift to another linguistic paradigm.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study pleads for the use of the term “integral linguistics” for the theory of language created and developed by the Romanian linguist Eugenio Coseriu starting with the middle of the twentieth century. The term was proposed by Coseriu himself only in 1981, when he contributed in the second edition of the National Congress of Linguistics in San Juan with a presentation named “Fundamentas y tareas de la lingüistica integral (Basis and tasks of integral linguistics)”. The term was not so much used in the world of linguistics, except for some of Eugenio Coseriu’s disciples, who clearly understood the amplitude of his vision on language (like Johannes Kabatek in Germany or Mircea Borcilă and all his followers in the linguistic school from Cluj-Napoca, Romania). The rationale for promoting the name of “integral linguistics” for the theory created by Eugenio Coseriu is based on some arguments listed and detailed in this study: integral linguistics has a unitary object, the language as a cultural object, studied from all relevant perspectives; it is based on a solid and well integrated philosophy of language (with ideas from Aristotle, Humboldt and Hegel and many other philosophers fundamenting Coseriu’s vision on language); it includes most relevant ideas from linguists who preceded Coseriu’s theory, in a constant integrative effort; it relates to other theories of language, clarifying its position in connection with different lines of study opened especially in the second half of the twentieth century; it proposes extremely valuable instruments and concepts adequate for the study of language and it offers the perspective of continuation and development of the study of language.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper it’s the first time the authors have reviewed linguistic literature (2008-2022) devoted to the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. The purpose of the paper is to review linguistic literature and identify the current state of the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. Materials and methods. On the basis of this purpose we reviewed 42 scientific papers published in 2008-2022 and representing the results of linguistic research of literary and electronic hypertext. For our study we used an analytical and descriptive method, which is traditional for linguistics and allows us to solve the tasks set in our paper. Results. A review of linguistic papers has shown that hypertext is a relevant subject of linguistic research. Scientists propose various definitions of this concept; consider it as a “special information and communication environment”. Many studies are devoted to literary (fiction and non-fiction) hypertext, however, a much larger number of papers are devoted to various aspects of electronic hypertext, including electronic fiction hypertext and electronic hypertext of some genres (news genres, online advertising, social network and online diary community as well as websites). We consider that it is the electronic environment where hypertext is implemented in all its functions. Practical implications. The results of the study can be used as a theoretical basis for further theoretical and practical study of various aspects of literary and electronic hypertext.
