&nbsp;To minimize the cost of logging, it is necessary to optimize the road density. The aim of this study was to determine optimal road spacing (ORS) in Northern Austria. The stepwise regression method was used in modelling. The production rate of tower yarder was 10.4 m<SUP>3</SUP>/PSHo (Productive system hours) and cost of 19.71 €.m<SUP>–3</SUP>. ORS was studied by calculating road construction cost, installation cost and yarding cost per m<SUP>3</SUP> for different road spacing. The minimum total cost occurred at 39.15 €.m<SUP>–3</SUP> and ORS would be 474 m assuming uphill and downhill yarding. The optimal road density and yarding distance are 21.1 m.ha<SUP>–1</SUP> and 90 m, respectively. A sample logging area was used to plan different roads and, using network analysis, the best solution was found based on a modified shortest path algorithm. The network analysis results were very different from the optimal road spacing results that assumed roads and logging corridors could be located anywhere in the planning area at a constant cost. Mixed integer programming was also used to get a real optimal solution.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper describes the development of a piece of software called “SimplexAlgo”, which calculates and solves a simplex algorithm. We have created this software for educational purposes in linear programming, which is a technique for the optimization of a linear objective function, subject to linear equality and linear inequality constraints, and as such is widely used in many fields in operation research. SimplexAlgo has been developed with the C# programming language in Visual Studio desktop. To execute an exercise, the software is manually coded according to the methods and ways studied and learned. To achieve the desired result, various attributes are used, as well as network connections from where we get the steps of a function (step -step-step). The application has a special algorithm to solve an exercise and provide solutions. Comparisons have been made regarding the speed of execution of the algorithm of this software with the existing ones, where it has been established that the execution time is faster.

The aim and scope of this paper are the infusion of purposeful action by decision makers with an explicit understanding of analytical linear programming (LP) tools in order that the managers will implement strategic results correctly. The advances in computing software have brought LP tools to the desktop for a variety of applications to support managerial decision-making. However, it is already recognized that current LP tools do not answer the managerial questions satisfactorily. For instance, there is a costly difference between the mathematical and managerial interpretations of sensitivity analysis. The LP software packages provide sensitivity results about the optimality of a basis and not about the optimality of the values of the decision variables, and the shadow prices that are of interest to the manager. Society has developed the largest sensitivity region based on “optimal solution,” not that which “preserves the basis” that allows for simultaneous dependent/independent changes. The aim and results of this article are found further in the work.
