Abstract (sommario):
A practice of experimental graphic scoring for performance explores the ambiguity and transformation at the conflation of boundaries between dance/performance and photography. Within the score, fragments of the moving gestural body are photographed and then placed upon the page in relation to and modified by lines. Naomi Elena Ramírez (b. Hermosillo, Mexico) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work encompasses visual art, video art, and performance, and the process by which the different mediums can inform each other. Her work has been presented by A.I.R. Gallery, the Institute of (Im)Possible Subjects, Movement Research at the Judson Church, DoublePlus at Gibney Dance, The Bronx Latin American Art Biennial, Nurture Art Gallery, BRIC Contemporary Arts online exhibitions, Wallplay Gallery, and The Situation Room, LA.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Anti-Retroviral therapy for HIV/AIDS has been effective, but the mortality rate remains to be high, resulting in the use of second line of ART treatment for better results. Objectives: 1) To estimate the number of deaths among PLHIV between the years 2011 and 2017. 2) To assess the clinical immunological and virological outcomes among these patients. 3) To find out the association of outcomes with the socio demographic characteristics. Methods: In this record-based study, medical records of PLHIV seeking treatment from an ART center associated with KMC, Attavar. between the years 2011 and 2017 were reviewed. The data was extracted using a data extraction sheet consisting of sections on demographic, clinical and treatment details of the patient. Results: The baseline median CD4 count before starting ARTs was found to be 253 (IQR 150-351). After starting second line ARTs it was found to be 461 (IQR 326-651). The correlation of CD4 count after initiation of second line ART with viral load among 34 patients measured was found to be -0.371 (P<0.05). Conclusion: The study concludes that the outcomes of second line ARTs in the present study were found to be satisfactory. The average CD4 count after the initiation of ARTs was significantly high as compared to the CD4 count before the ARTs, implying that second line ARTs had a good, long-term and positive immunological outcome on PLHIV and attending a second-line ART clinic.

Abstract (sommario):
Studio-based art and design education provides high levels of individual attention but has been criticized for the high demands for space and staff time that it places on institutions. Furthermore, retention and attainment rates in art and design subjects demonstrate that not all students develop the supportive, individual relationships with their tutors that facilitate development as creative practitioners. This article reports a case study of an initiative to improve retention amongst first year students studying Art, Design and Architecture subjects, by utilizing recent graduates, employed as Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), to create a communications bridge between new students and their subject tutors. The project found that retention rates improved by 50% for these first-year students, who also reported that GTAs are welcoming, approachable, more accessible, and easier to talk to than academic staff. Tutors felt that communication with their students was enhanced by GTAs helping build clear narratives for each student. As the role of GTA becomes more established, further developments will include facilitating peer-to-peer collaboration in the studio through the harnessing and integration of peer mentors to more quickly foster a collaborative and supportive studio culture for new students.

Abstract (sommario):
Global healthcare crisis has a significant impact on human health and economy because of antimicrobial resistance. Emergence of antibiotic resistance due to excessive antibiotic use results in resistant microbes. Biofilm shows integral resistance to antimicrobial agents and the host defense system. Microbes that exist in the biofilms, shows 10-1000 times resistance to antibiotics as compared to the free life style. The biofilms of bacteria serve as a great issue in not only environmental and industrial line but also play an important role in healthcare setting. The biofilm producing bacteria such as Vibrio cholerae and antibiotic resistant bacteria like methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) cause deadly infections. In present study, efficacy of bacterial amylase was tested against biofilm formation of pathogenic microbes. For this, Amylase producing bacterial isolates (isolated from a variety of sources, such as waste, rhizosphere of vegetable soil, rice field, potato, and sugarcane field soils sources (ArPs, ArDs, ArSs, ArVs and ArRs) were utilized to reduce the microbial biofilm development against pathogenic isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Six bacterial isolates (SB, SW, SU, PB, PW, and PU) obtained from cancer patients of tertiary care hospitals. Amylase enzyme extracted from ArPs showed maximum growth inhibitory effect on SW pathogen, while ArRs showed minimum growth effect upon SB pathogens. However, amylase showed highest anti-biofilm activity against SW pathogen. In general, the highest biofilm inhibition was recorded at pH7 at 37°C as compared to rest of pHs and temperatures. The efficacy of bacterial amylase in biofilm inhibition of human pathogens, seem promising and having significant potential in health care systems.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the features and origins of Nikolay Milyutin’s urban planning theory. Written long before the completion of his formal education, his book “Socialist city” became extremely popular among the planners and architects of the 20th century, but the real extent of his contribution to the practice of building new cities, as well as the impact on subsequent developments have not yet been fully measured. Milyutin himself was quite familiar with the urban planning thought of his time thanks not only to his communication with Le Corbusier, but also to his books, primarily in French. Whereas Vladimir Semyonov was a conductor of the English urban planning thought in Russia and the USSR, Milyutin was a conductor of the French and Spanish ones.

Abstract (sommario):
This contribution gives insight into the decolonisation of thought by presenting Black Out, a transmedia initiative located in the city of Liège in Belgium. Black Out is a project designed for promoting black music and culture and fighting against racism, principally through information technology and social media. I highlight how Black Out may participate in efforts for decolonising arts and culture in Belgium and Europe. To do so, I present a few contextual elements about racism and the postcolonial debate in Belgium before giving examples on how the projects of Black Out are in line with some of the driving forces of the decolonial approach.

Jin, Zichun, Zhiyong Long, Shaofei Wang e Yunmeng Liu. "Performance of the Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Simulator (ARTS) in the 600–1650 cm−1 Region". Remote Sensing 15, n. 19 (9 ottobre 2023): 4889. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/rs15194889.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Simulator (ARTS) has been widely used in the radiation transfer simulation from microwave to terahertz. Due to the same physical principles, ARTS can also be used for simulations of thermal infrared (TIR). However, thorough evaluations of ARTS in the TIR region are still lacking. Here, we evaluated the performance of ARTS in 600–1650 cm−1 taking the Line-By-Line Radiative Transfer Model (LBLRTM) as a reference model. Additionally, the moderate resolution atmospheric transmission (MODTRAN) band model (BM) and correlated-k (CK) methods were also used for comparison. The comparison results on the 0.001 cm−1 spectral grid showed a high agreement (sub-0.1 K) between ARTS and LBLRTM, while the mean bias difference (MBD) and root mean square difference (RMSD) were less than 0.05 K and 0.3 K, respectively. After convolving with the spectral response functions of the Atmospheric Infra-Red Sounder (AIRS) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the brightness temperature (BT) differences between ARTS and LBLRTM became smaller with RMSDs of <0.1 K. The comparison results for Jacobians showed that the Jacobians calculated by ARTS and LBLRTM were close for temperature (can be used for Numerical Weather Prediction application) and O3 (excellent Jacobian fit). For the water vapor Jacobian, the Jacobian difference increased with an increasing water vapor content. However, at extremely low water vapor values (0.016 ppmv in this study), LBLRTM exhibited non-physical mutations, while ARTS was smooth. This study aims to help users understand the simulation accuracy of ARTS in the TIR region and the improvement of ARTS via the community.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Consider the nature and function of art and art historical scholarship in the present: Is there still a line—even fine or porous—securing the fragile autonomy of the arts and humanities from commodification in late capitalism? Can art still serve as a negative and critical mirror for reality under the seemingly complete commodification and technological mediation of social life? Is there any real need for art and art historical scholarship even to exist today? Can the arts and humanities serve an emancipatory social agenda, and, if so, how? What role might the humanist ideals once shared by liberals and communists play in the reformulation of art and scholarship today?

Abstract (sommario):
Everyone knows Galileo Galilei as an astronomer, physicist and writer of books that changed our perception of the world. Few people know that Galileo also wrote poetry in elegant XVI century Italian. In 1590, aged 26, Galileo was a lecturer of mathematics at the University of Pisa, the poorest paid of the faculty. He dutifully taught Euclid, but quickly ran into trouble: he despised and openly challenged Pisa's strict academic traditions. Especially the rule by which all professors had to wear their gown at all times, under penalty of a stiff fine. To chastise and mock such rule, he wrote his longest poem, the 301-line Capitolo "Against the Donning of the Gown".

Abstract (sommario):
The author came to lateral line research rather by chance, yet this sensory system ended up as the main research focus of my entire scientific career. This paper is not a review article. Instead, it gives an overview of some of the major research topics that the author, collaborators, and students have worked on for more than 4 decades. During the last century, lateral line research was mostly approached by using mono-frequency water motions generated in still water with a stationary vibrating sphere. At the beginning, this approach was necessary and useful. During studies, it became apparent that the fish lateral line can only be fully understood if more natural hydrodynamic stimuli (including natural hydrodynamic noise) were applied. Better methods, like particle image velocimetry, are then needed in the research of lateral line systems. Finally, how a biomimetic approach can be used to investigate lateral line function is discussed. In the final paragraph, some research gaps and hence, opportunities that still exist in the research of the lateral line systems are highlighted.

Abstract (sommario):
The overuse of visual imagery and the redundancy of information in traditional and new communication media have desensitized our society, resulting in an emotional bankruptcy. The World Wide Web communication medium, with its highly visual interface and virtual environments, perpetuates and aggravates this situation. The “new designers” of the twenty-first century must partner with technology experts, content specialists and common users to reinvigorate imagination and rekindle emotions. To this end, we can identify and extract the six essential ingredients of engagement from the traditional performing arts, communication and design theory and recast them to support new media that are both visually stimulating and emotionally provocative.

Abstract (sommario):
Japan is a capitalist country that puts profit at the center of the organization of industrial relations, but puts the "man" at the center of the organization of society and, accordingly, attaches great importance to human resources. Sport, as part of a healthy lifestyle, is one of the ways to promote longevity in Japan. In addition to many other elements, it contributes to a higher quality of life along with a particular diet. In Japan, stress is present because change is part of everyday life, and in the elimination of stress, it helps the sport as part of a healthy approach to life. Japan has a very long history of traditional martial sports and that are part of the budo, namely: judo, kendo, kyudo, sumo, karate-do, aikido, shorinji kempo, naginata, and jukendo. The very English term "martial arts" implies both martial sports and martial arts, though the two terms are distinguished. For example, a traditional martial sport is sumo, a martial arts is aikido, while karate is both a sport and a martial art. The main difference between martial sports and martial arts is that martial sports have competitions and firm rules in line with which athletes compete, while the arts have no contests and competition rules, but rather respect the principles of the martial art itself. Today, martial sports aim to improve a person's potential and abilities through learning, and to lead them to a fair triumph. The main point of martial arts is the acquisition of combat skills that are applicable in every situation.
