Abstract (sommario):
A practice of experimental graphic scoring for performance explores the ambiguity and transformation at the conflation of boundaries between dance/performance and photography. Within the score, fragments of the moving gestural body are photographed and then placed upon the page in relation to and modified by lines. Naomi Elena Ramírez (b. Hermosillo, Mexico) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work encompasses visual art, video art, and performance, and the process by which the different mediums can inform each other. Her work has been presented by A.I.R. Gallery, the Institute of (Im)Possible Subjects, Movement Research at the Judson Church, DoublePlus at Gibney Dance, The Bronx Latin American Art Biennial, Nurture Art Gallery, BRIC Contemporary Arts online exhibitions, Wallplay Gallery, and The Situation Room, LA.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Anti-Retroviral therapy for HIV/AIDS has been effective, but the mortality rate remains to be high, resulting in the use of second line of ART treatment for better results. Objectives: 1) To estimate the number of deaths among PLHIV between the years 2011 and 2017. 2) To assess the clinical immunological and virological outcomes among these patients. 3) To find out the association of outcomes with the socio demographic characteristics. Methods: In this record-based study, medical records of PLHIV seeking treatment from an ART center associated with KMC, Attavar. between the years 2011 and 2017 were reviewed. The data was extracted using a data extraction sheet consisting of sections on demographic, clinical and treatment details of the patient. Results: The baseline median CD4 count before starting ARTs was found to be 253 (IQR 150-351). After starting second line ARTs it was found to be 461 (IQR 326-651). The correlation of CD4 count after initiation of second line ART with viral load among 34 patients measured was found to be -0.371 (P<0.05). Conclusion: The study concludes that the outcomes of second line ARTs in the present study were found to be satisfactory. The average CD4 count after the initiation of ARTs was significantly high as compared to the CD4 count before the ARTs, implying that second line ARTs had a good, long-term and positive immunological outcome on PLHIV and attending a second-line ART clinic.

Abstract (sommario):
Studio-based art and design education provides high levels of individual attention but has been criticized for the high demands for space and staff time that it places on institutions. Furthermore, retention and attainment rates in art and design subjects demonstrate that not all students develop the supportive, individual relationships with their tutors that facilitate development as creative practitioners. This article reports a case study of an initiative to improve retention amongst first year students studying Art, Design and Architecture subjects, by utilizing recent graduates, employed as Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), to create a communications bridge between new students and their subject tutors. The project found that retention rates improved by 50% for these first-year students, who also reported that GTAs are welcoming, approachable, more accessible, and easier to talk to than academic staff. Tutors felt that communication with their students was enhanced by GTAs helping build clear narratives for each student. As the role of GTA becomes more established, further developments will include facilitating peer-to-peer collaboration in the studio through the harnessing and integration of peer mentors to more quickly foster a collaborative and supportive studio culture for new students.

Abstract (sommario):

This group of paintings was informed by an investigation of the complex linear matrix of wires within telecommunications networks and data centers. As most of these processes are automated, I took interest in how they continue operating without our knowledge or attention, much like the functions of our own human bodies. I began to regard this wiring as the nervous system of our technologically driven modes of communication. With this as a metaphor, I began to question how the greater system of daily operations played into contemporary life, both physically and psychologically.

Often, it is not until we encounter a glitch or malfunction in these processes, that we even become aware of the system that generated them. I decided to take these faults in the wiring as visual metaphors and departure points to begin the intuitive process of painting. While my work has been instigated by a metaphorical investigation into technology, its core reflects the handmade; intuitive, and off-line. These paintings have evolved from an abstract relationship with technological transmission to an embodied metaphor for technology within human experience.

Abstract (sommario):
BEHIND THE FIRE LINEA thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Master of Fine Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, 2004. Major Director: Jim Long, Department Chair. Behind the Line of Fire is a documentary of the professional lives of a group of firefighters. Inspired by the events of September 11th, it has been an ongoing journey for me as I continue to interact with an photograph these individuals doing the job that they live for. My goal for this project has been to work within the guidelines of a documentary, a genre that has a rich, diverse, and defined history. I did not want to show scenes in which firefighters were depicted in typically iconographic scenarios. I have not made any images to date representing exploding structures with firefighters risking life and limb fighting the fire, nor have I shown the firefighters performing heroic acts such as rescuing a child or an animal. I believe the imagery I have created presents firefighters in a different light. These are men and women working. There are no hidden meanings or agendas involved. The photos are to be taken at face value as images of people whose lives revolve around what they do.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the informal properties often used to describe a new virtual world is its degree of openness. Yet what is an “open” virtual world? Does the phrase mean generally the same thing to different people? What distinguishes an open world from a less open world? Why does openness matter anyway? The answers to these questions cast light on an important, but shadowy, and uneasy, topic for virtual worlds: the relationship between those who construct the virtual, and those who use these constructions.

Daly, Shannon Valentine. "The Effects of Visual Arts on Expressive Language in Participants with Dementia". Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6215.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Visual aids such as memory books have been shown to help increase recall of information and facilitate improved communication in people with dementia (Bourgeois, 2014). Because of the effectiveness of visual aids for people with dementia, this study aimed to determine if the type of visual stimulus would produce differences in the quality of language expressed. It was hypothesized that a more realistic picture in full color would elicit more descriptive language than a black and white line drawing. Verbal descriptions of Norman Rockwell’s realistic painting, Coming and Going and descriptions of a black and white line drawing of the same painting were collected in a counterbalanced manner from seven participants with dementia. Transcripts were coded for expressive language variables (e.g, descriptive content, nouns, verbs, etc.). Results revealed that the descriptions of the black and white line drawing contained more irrelevant utterances including significantly more unrelated utterances (p=0.04) and significantly more self-corrected utterances (p=0.02) than the realistic picture. No statistically significant differences were found for any other variables. This suggests that while both pictures elicited descriptive language, the descriptions of the black and white line drawing contained more unrelated and self-corrected information than descriptions of the realistic painting. More research needs to be conducted using a greater number of participants to further explore the effects of different visual stimuli on expressive language of persons with dementia.

Abstract (sommario):
The FBI is the most recognized law enforcement entity in the world. During its nearly 100-year history, the Bureau has been involved in many controversies, most as a result of straying from its stated mission to investigate violations of federal law. This survey is based on personal papers of the former head of the Richmond Bureau, John Edward Lawler. Fortunately for historians, these files, many of which exist nowhere else in the agency's archives, open a window into the operational methods and investigative techniques of FBI agents. An examination of John Lawler's career provides insight into the conduct of field agents and Agents in Charge of field bureaus during the 1940s.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe unit overview is focused on the creation of art and aesthetic objects. Given the fact that the line between art and non-art has become thinner and thinner during the last decades, we pursue the creation of a varied number of visual media, ranging from classical portraits to selfie and selfie-editing behaviours. Also, we bring into view authorship issues, arising both from classical art philosophy and contemporary situations, such as AI-generated art. The function and meaning of portraits across the ages is a key part of the discussion in this chapter, treating art as utilitarian and aesthetic at the same time. Moreover, the reasons for creating art lay at the center of trying to analyze art creation from a neurological perspective. Defining the artist/creator and establishing his or her position as aesthetic expert becomes crucial in this respect. We present the current limitations in the field of neuroaesthetics regarding art and portrait creation and we try to re-contextualize research from the perception field of neuroaesthetics and apply it to the art-production field.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Ecological concerns and time and cost saving measures have started a trend towards dry-processed, high quality image recording media for digital medical and graphic arts imaging applications. As compared to silver-halide film based systems, the photosensitive layers in most of these media are considerably less sensitive than traditional wet-processed film and therefore require a high laser power for exposure. In addition, advanced screening methods, like FM or stochastic screening, require an extremely well controlled laser spot size. The most recent developments in the graphic arts industry are directed towards eliminating film as an intermediate step for plate-making altogether and instead writing the image (comprising text, line art and pictures) directly onto plates. What these technological developments have in common is that, independent of the specific method for implementation, they all rely on various high power laser sources with extremely well controlled beam properties for writing the image. This talk will address the present status of laser requirements for non-silver-halide-based medical and graphic arts printing, as well as impending industry-wide technological changes and the resulting “wish list” for advanced laser sources.

Schell, Laurie. Introduction to Case-making and Systems Change in Arts & Cultural Education. Creative Generation, febbraio 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.51163/creative-gen009.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Introduction to Case-making and Systems Change in Arts & Cultural Education is an overview of a collaborative project between Creative Generation and ElevateArtsEd undertaken to better understand how practitioners - such as artists, educators, community leaders, and more - can make the case for and also advocate through arts and culture to drive systemic change and address complex challenges. The project seeks to expand the knowledge base of case-making and systems change in the field of arts and cultural education and provide resources to support effective actions for practitioners and young creatives. Investigating both the theory and the practice of case-making, the introductory article draws on research from three distinct sectors: cultural, education, and social justice. The approach represents both the science of advocacy-- building blocks for understanding what effective advocacy looks like-- and the art of advocacy with calls for improvisation, adaptability, and generative thinking, all characteristics of art making. The article describes six key learning themes and an expanded model for advocacy focused on self, field, and sector through an overarching lens of social justice.

Rogers, Amanda. The Seven Colours Festival: Young People and Civic Participation in the Arts. Swansea University, luglio 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.23889/sureport.66346.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Based on our previous research (Rogers et al 2021) we noticed a difference between how artists think the arts relate to society, and how young people imagine this relationship. Young people wanted to see (and connected most strongly to) art works that more immediately engaged with the pressing social issues of Cambodia, many of which are political – including climate change, the expression of identity and human rights (e.g. LGBTQ identity), corruption and scams, and democracy. However, artists, particularly in the performing arts and music sectors, must walk a tightrope in making works that address this kind of content, with incidents of censorship most likely to occur in music (Brennert and Yean 2023). This raises the question of how the arts can connect to society, and the possibilities and limitations of this relationship. This project follows on from our initial findings, focusing on young people who may not have much experience of the arts. It considers how the arts may work for young people as a form of civic participation and what that might look like in Cambodia. To do this it traced the journey of four young interns in producing a youth festival (the 7 Colours Festival) during the course of 2023 for Cambodian Living Arts (CLA). We examined their participation in creating the event, how they connected the festival to the social concerns of young people, and evaluated how young people participated in the festival. McIntyre, Phillip, Susan Kerrigan e Marion McCutcheon. Australian Cultural and Creative Activity: A Population and Hotspot Analysis: Albury-Wodonga. Queensland University of Technology, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5204/rep.eprints.206966.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Albury-Wodonga, situated in Wiradjuri country, sits astride the Murray River and has benefitted in many ways from its almost equidistance from Sydney and Melbourne. It has found strength in the earlier push for decentralisation begun in early 1970s. A number of State and Federal agencies have ensured middle class professionals now call this region home. Light industry is a feature of Wodonga while Albury maintains the traditions and culture of its former life as part of the agricultural squattocracy. Both Local Councils are keen to work cooperatively to ensure the region is an attractive place to live signing an historical partnership agreement. The region’s road, rail, increasing air links and now digital infrastructure, keep it closely connected to events elsewhere. At the same time its distance from the metropolitan centres has meant it has had to ensure that its creative and cultural life has been taken into its own hands. The establishment of the sophisticated Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) as well as the presence of the LibraryMuseum, Hothouse Theatre, Fruit Fly Circus, The Cube, Arts Space and the development of Gateway Island on the Murray River as a cultural hub, as well as the high profile activities of its energetic, entrepreneurial and internationally savvy locals running many small businesses, events and festivals, ensures Albury Wodonga has a creative heart to add to its rural and regional activities.
