Abstract (sommario):
AbstractLearning the sounds of letters is important for learning to decode printed words and is a key component of phonics instruction. Some letter sounds are easier for children than others, and studies of these differences can shed light on the factors that influence children’s learning. The present study examined knowledge of the sounds of lowercase letters among children in England, where a government-mandated curriculum specifies the order in which letter sounds should be taught and where letters’ sounds are taught before the names. The participants were 355 children from Nursery (mean age 4 years, 4 months), Reception (mean age 5 years, 4 months), and Year 1 (6 years, 4 months) classes. When order of teaching was statistically controlled, children did better than expected on the initial letter of their first name and worse on visually confusable letters. Unlike the North American children in previous studies, they did not perform better on letters that had their sounds at the beginning of their names than on other types of letters. The sonority and the age of acquisition of the letter’s sound were also not influential. Implications for letter teaching, particularly for children at risk of literacy problems, are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines the employment of pragmatic empathy as a grand strategy in business letter writing. To account for the realization of pragmatic empathy in business letters, we make a corpus-based manual analysis of four types of business letters. It is found that (1) the choice of deixis is a major concern in most letters: while second person is often used in competitive letters, first or third person frequently appears in other three types of letters; (2) conventionalized indirectness strategy is often used in competitive business letters while mitigation strategy is preferred in conflictive business letters; (3) the employment of different strategies is an adaptation to various empathetic concerns in business letter writing. It is concluded that different types of business letters are characterized by different pragmatic strategies to achieve empathy. This paper, which is an attempt to investigate business letters from the empathy perspective, sheds light on business discourse research in general and business letter writing in particular.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe first part of this article offers a structural analysis of the literary letter of petition Abaindasa to Sulge, one of the most unstable OB literary compositions that has posed considerable problems to scholars in the past. Both the difficult reconstruction of the text and questions as to its connection to other Sumerian literary letters will be analyzed. A close examination of the sources and identification of intertextual relations will help our understanding of its textual reconstruction and its place among different subgroups of Sumerian literary letters. The second part of the article will be dedicated to the edition of a previously unpublished duplicate of this letter in the Musée d’art et d’histoire, Geneva, supplemented by a comparison to another tablet with a Sumerian literary letter in the same museum, which might have been written by the same scribe.

Abstract (sommario):
While evidence abounds as to Elizabeth I’s proficiency in Italian, only a fraction of her letters in this language has so far come to light, and only one has been edited in Marcus and Mueller’s Autograph Compositions and Foreign Language Originals, the well-known first extant letter by the then Princess to Katherine Parr. A research project commenced in 2009 has so far located about thirty of these, including six (three of which are also in their original drafts) entirely in the queen’s hand. Questions of authorship related to the non-holograph letters, however, clearly arise. By analyzing an unpublished letter by Elizabeth, this paper will try to cast some light on the vicissitudes of the queen’s Italian correspondence.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper has interrogated the existence of the twenty-six letters in the English alphabet as currently being employed and has concluded that the twenty-six letters have been around for far too long without acceptable addition. The need for expansion has therefore arisen in the light of achieving space conservation when writing and printing hard copies of documents. The paper disagrees with the presentation of the ampersand ‘&’ as the twenty-seventh letter of the English alphabet instead it has proposed being the hybrid resulting from letters ‘s’ and ‘h’ as the twenty-seventh letter. It concluded by recommending the evolution of appropriate letters for other consonant digraphs and trigraphs. This may help in phonological deepening.

Abstract (sommario):
In his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul addressed the occasion of deaths among Christians with stock arguments of the consolatory genre, without using the typical epistolary structure associated with consolation in ancient handbooks of letter-writing. It is demonstrated that three of Seneca the Younger's letters also employed stock arguments of consolation, but did not follow the usual structure for a letter of consolation. Using Seneca's letters as a test case for what constituted pagan ideas of consolation, we highlight some compelling reasons for reading First Thessalonians as a letter of consolation, a reading that offers some new insights into the passage on the right Christian attitude towards death in 1 Thess 4.13–5.11.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Three masked priming experiments investigated the effects of target word length and number of inserted letters on superset priming, where irrelevant letters are added to targets to form prime stimuli (e.g., tanble-table). Effects of one, two, three, and four-letter insertions were measured relative to an unrelated prime condition, the identity prime condition, and a condition where the order of letters of the superset primes was reversed. Superset primes facilitated performance compared with unrelated primes and reversed primes, and the overall pattern showed a small cost of letter insertion that was independent of target word length and that increased linearly as a function of the number of inserted letters. A meta-analysis incorporating data from the present study and two other studies investigating superset priming, showed an average estimated processing cost of 11 ms per letter insertion. Models of letter position coding are examined in the light of this result.

Abstract (sommario):
New Testament scholars continue to debate the number of missing ‘particles’ in disputed Pauline letters in order to advocate or challenge their pseudonymity. Surprisingly, however, participants in the debate do not usually define particles nor do they explain how they count missing types. Addressing these methodological issues, the present study suggests using the broader category of ‘indeclinables’ instead of particles, and to count missing types by either comparing the data for a particular letter (or group of letters) against another letter (or group of letters) or in light of the entire Pauline letter corpus. Since the overall result proves to be different for both approaches, it appears that the question regarding the number of missing indeclinables in (pseudo-)Pauline literature is essentially one of method.

Abstract (sommario):
Learning to read and write in English requires children to master the alphabetic principle, the idea that the letters in printed words represent the sounds in spoken words in a more or less regular manner. Children need at least two skills in order to grasp the alphabetic principle. The first is phonological awareness, or a sensitivity to the sound structure of spoken words. The second is knowledge about letters, including knowledge of letter names and knowledge of letter sounds. Recent research sheds light on these foundational skills, documenting the linguistic factors that affect children's performance and how children put their phonological skills and knowledge of letters to use in learning to read and spell.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the theme of disunity is more widespread in Phil than is usually acknowledged, and that it underlies the whole of Phil. It is suggested that the situation of disunity in the church is the background against which Phil is to be read. The thesis is divided into two parts. Part One draws attention to the distribution of the theme of disunity throughout much of the letter. Following the sequential order of Phil, I deal with the following main units: 1:1-11, 1:12-26; 1:27-2:18, 3:1-4:1, 4:2,3. The following questions will be addressed: What are the characteristics of disunity in the Philippian church? Which factors contributed to its emergence? Who are the participants? What can be concluded about the dynamics of their interactions? Can all these references be taken as facets of one and the same situations? Part Two focuses on the collection of money to be sent as relief to Paul, as well as the mission of Epaphroditus. The two key texts are 2:25-30 and 4:10-20. The principal questions here are: What kind of independent information about disunity do these sections supply? Are there traits parallel to those already observed in Part One? How does this episode fit into the wider framework of Phil? But before dealing with these two passages within the general context of disunity in the church, considerable space will be devoted to two topics relevant for establishing the historical context. One is the issue of the size, composition, and structure of the Philippian church, and the other is Paul's policy toward the financing of his missionary endeavours through the acceptance of financial support in general, and in particular from the Philippians.

Asquith, Gillian. "Paul's unexpected words : A register and semantic study of selected epistolary formulae in Paul's letter openings in light of documentary papyri". Phd thesis, Australian Catholic University, 2023. https://doi.org/10.26199/acu.8z4q6.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Prior scholarship has established that Pauline modifications of the conventional Koine epistolary prescript contribute to Paul’s self-positioning with his recipients and the persuasive force of his letters. This study furthers an understanding of Paul’s epistolary practice by exploring contributions of the remembrance motif (an expression of assurance that the sender remembers the letter’s recipients) and the distinctive Pauline litotic form of the disclosure formula (οὐ θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν, variously translated in English versions as “I do not want you to be uninformed, unaware, ignorant”) to Paul’s communicative strategy in light of documentary papyri. The study undertakes synthesised sociolinguistic and semantic analyses of μνεία, ἀδιαλείπτως, and the litotic disclosure formula in documentary papyri. Applying Michael Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory of Register to documentary papyri demonstrates that μνεία, ἀδιαλείπτως, and the litotic disclosure formula belong to a formal register. Documentary papyri indicate that μνεία carries a nuance of remembrance with responsive action (i.e., prayer) in the remembrance motif rather than the sense “mention” provided by major lexica. Documentary papyri also indicate that ἀδιαλείπτως is polysemous. Eighty per cent of papyrological attestations of ἀδιαλείπτως occur in legal documents where the lexeme reinforces the certainty of a promisor’s commitment to terms of a contract: “without fail” captures the illocutionary force of this sense that is additional to the customarily understood frequentative sense typically rendered “constantly.” Letter writers used the remembrance motif to establish or maintain friendly relations with their recipients (philophronesis). The study argues that letter writers used the litotic disclosure formula similarly. Epistolary papyri facilitate the identification of baselines for the wording of the formulae and indicate that the Pauline forms depart from them. Using an interpretive lens of the Theory of Norms and Exploitations (developed by the lexicographer Patrick Hanks), the study shows how polite, formal language in epistolary formulae further contributed to philophronesis. Paul’s use of unexpected, polite, formal language in the remembrance motif and litotic disclosure formula suggests the carefully crafted modification of the formulae to intensify their philophronetic function and persuasive force. Nuances of μνεία and ἀδιαλείπτως complement the modified remembrance motif’s emphatic philophronesis. “I remember you without fail in my prayers” evokes the sociotheological significance of remembrance and functions as an emphatic reassurance of Paul’s pastoral concern for his recipients. The distinctive Pauline form of the litotic disclosure formula contributes to Paul’s communicative strategy by anchoring the presentation of subsequent information in the positive relationship that exists or that Paul wants to exist between himself and his recipients. The new elements of communicative strategy revealed by the register and semantic analyses of this study inform exegesis of the NT and demonstrate promise for research into the language of the NT and beyond into later antiquity.

Gallagher, Alexandra Margaret. "‘“Breathing for a while on our earth”: Re-reading S. T. Coleridge’s ‘Dejection: An Ode’ and ‘Letter To Asra’ in light of his severe rheumatic fever.’". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/20540.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Hitherto overlooked medical sources ascribing Coleridge’s ill health to a deadly strain of rheumatic fever should prompt us not only to reinterpret ‘Dejection: An Ode’ as an empirical narrative of respiratory distress as much as a lament for lost or lessened imaginative power, but also to reconsider its long-standing classification as a ‘conversation poem’ and to reassess the relation of the ode to the letter from which it derives. Whereas discussion of air and breathing in Romantic literature tends to be metaphysical, this thesis addresses the question of what happens when we place the physiology and pathology of respiration at the centre of an analysis of a major Romantic poem. Analysing Coleridge’s response to his rheumatic fever as a case study of respiratory writing, I trace the ways in which the poet’s facility for literary osmosis transforms daily management and mismanagement of his bodily ailments into poetic legacy. Coleridge’s rheumatic fever inextricably knots together his body and imagination, such that breathlessness figures in his writing as both a conventional poetic trope and a frightening lived experience. Coleridge’s acute awareness of sensation and relationship with pain led him to understand breathing within material and ethereal spaces. His rheumatic reflections in letters and notebooks play a large part in shaping his literary identity, and respiratory dysfunction, especially the sense of smothering oppression, is crucial to an understanding, his own as much as ours, of his deeply dejected state. This thesis examines papers published by physicians close to Coleridge, such as William Cullen, David Dundas, and William Charles Wells; records pertaining to Coleridge’s autopsy; and an editorial from the London Times reflecting on his death, in order to identify rheumatic fever as Coleridge’s primary ailment, against countervailing diagnoses of opioid addiction, scrofula and lassitude. The scientific investigation of breathing was familiar to Coleridge from his youth, during which the study of pneumatic chemistry and pneumatic medicine flourished. He immersed himself in a world of ‘new airs’ including Joseph Priestley’s Experiments and Observations on Different Kinds of Air. Engagement with a pneumatic zeitgeist that deconstructed elemental air saw him act on medical advice from Thomas Beddoes’ Pneumatic Institute. With his close friend, Humphry Davy, he experimentally inhaled nitrous oxide and to Davy confided his rheumatic grief. Yet the alarm Coleridge felt about the spiritual consequences of such novel scientific enquiries must inform any exegesis of ‘Dejection: An Ode’ even as we must also look beyond his nostalgia for an older vitalist response to breath to affirm the centrality of the physical body in his ode’s deeper poetic truth. I find all the ode’s motifs invite respiratory comment, from the lost screaming child and trampled men to the suffocating nightmares and crushing vipers. (499 words)

Abstract (sommario):
The Green Light letter from President Franklin Roosevelt to Major League Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis gave MLB permission to continue throughout World War II. The team owners felt relief that MLB is the only professional sport to survive during the years of World War II (1941-1945). MLB became a primary contributor toward the war effort. While war-supporting efforts were conducted, team owners positioned themselves to benefit from the bond between baseball and the American people. MLB portrayed itself through the commissioner’s office policy as a patriotic partner by providing entertainment for American factory workers and contributing equipment to servicemen overseas. MLB also remained a monopoly without Congressional inquiries or public challenge. Since MLB was exempt from anti-trust laws, team owners operated within MLB’s anti-trust exemption and strengthened position for the post war period.

Balamosev, Konstantinos. "The language of early Byzantine epistolography in the light of unpublished letters from the Vienna papyrus collection (4th - 7th cent. AD)". Doctoral thesis, 2019. https://depotuw.ceon.pl/handle/item/3200.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The doctoral thesis aims at presenting the language and style of early Byzantine epistolography, as well as the ideas and emotions that underlie it, seen through the prism of unpublished material from the collection of the Austrian National Library in Vienna. Its starting point is the examination of private letters written on papyri dated from the 4th to the 7th century AD. The dissertation processes a "raw" material, thanks to which we can get an immediate insight into linguistic and stylistic evolution, social networks developing in the Byzantine province of Egypt, people and their emotions. This work consists of a catalog of the edited texts to help navigate through the material and the following parts: A. The introductory part, divided into three sections: 1) Review of literature on the history of ancient Greek epistolography, and previous monographs, key articles and research; 2) A detailed description of the work methodology; 3) Language aspects and stylistics. Part 3 discusses the most interesting discoveries from the linguistic point of view and other observations made on the basis of the edited texts, of particular value for researchers in the field of history and other related fields. B. Texts: edition of twenty-five letters made according to papyrological standards; accurate transcription; commentary on individual lines of text (analysis of the form and content of documents): grammar, phonetics, structural phenomena, prosopographic data, socio-historical analysis, paleographic comparisons with other texts. C. Conclusions: summary of research results. Finally, in the form of annexes, there appear full indexes of dates, names, professions and officials, terms related to religion and the Church, and a general index of Greek words. One of the annexes, illustrated with photos, is devoted to the abbreviations appearing in the texts. The annexes also contain a list of so-called nomina sacra, or abbreviations of a special form used to write names, proper names, and terms closely related to the Christian religion
B. Teksty: edycja dwudziestu pięciu listów wykonana wedle standardów papirologicznych; staranna transkrypcja; komentarz do poszczególnych linii tekstu (analiza formy i treści dokumentów): gramatyka, fonetyka, zjawiska strukturalne, dane prosopograficzne, analiza społeczno-historyczna, paleograficzne porównania z innymi tekstami. Aneksy zawierają także listę tzw. nomina sacra, czyli skrótów o szczególnej formie stosowanych do zapisu imion, nazw własnych i terminów ściśle powiązanych z religią chrześcijańską.

"A socio-rhetorical interpretation of the letter to Philemon in light of the new institutional economics: an exhortation to transform from master-slave economic relationship to brotherly loving relationship". 2014. http://repository.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/en/item/cuhk-1291480.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis reinterprets the letter to Philemon as a letter exhorting a new loving relationship for a slave by applying Vernon Robbins’ socio-rhetorical interpretation framework in light of the new institutional economics. Based on the runaway hypothesis, the letter has long been read as written by Paul to beg Philemon’s forgiveness for Onesimus. This thesis argues that the runaway hypothesis is based on a biased view of the slave trade, as well as incomplete consideration of the first century slave-master relationship and Pauline theological and ethical thought; therefore, it is not sufficiently justified. In turn, we argue that, instead of approaching the text based on an a priori hypothesis or the occasion of the letter, the framework of socio-rhetorical analysis provides a step-by-step method for producing mutual dialogue between different disciplines to analyze the letter.
Beginning with an analysis of the inner texture, we can see—through the word analysis, epistolary analysis, and rhetorical analysis—that a relational problem is the major concern of the letter. The analysis also demonstrates that there is a need to incorporate other textures to help them understand what problem is more likely for Paul to address and what ground he bases this on in the letter. Then, in chapter 3, we investigate the theological and ethical thought of Paul as an intertextual texture. With Paul’s theological thought in mind, reconstructed from his other undisputed letters, we can start to re-read Phlm through the structure of love. The intertextual texture helps us to see how Paul would see the problem and how to read the letter in light of Paul’s understanding of love. At the end of the chapter, we also see the need for a contextual analysis of Roman slavery to provide us with a more specific explanation of the slave-master relationship in light of the apparently contradictory practice and the complicated institutions that upheld Roman slavery.
In chapter 4, we first argue the relevance and applicability of NIE to help us to analyze Roman slavery. Then, we introduce the framework of new institutional economics (NIE), arguing that it can give a more comprehensive explanation of how ideology, law and institutions related to Roman slavery together served the economic interests of slave owners. These insights from NIE will be brought into the interpretation process in a socio-rhetorical framework. Based on the three textures— inner texture, intertexture, and economic texture—chapter 5 will show that the body of the letter exhorts a transformation of the relationship from economics to one of loving brotherhood, from master and slave to the household of the church. More specifically, we will demonstrate how Paul argues rhetorically both for a loving relationship and against the slave-master economic relationship.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, we describe a novel associative memory based on a coherent optical correlator which is able to identify individual words in a continuous string of letters. The output is readable text: a series of words with spaces inserted between them. The system is shift invariant and has error correction capability.

Abstract (sommario):
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the electronic or mechanical conversion of images of typed, handwritten, or printed text into machine-encoded text. Advanced systems are capable to produce a high degree of recognition accuracy for most technic fonts, but when it comes to handwritten forms there is a problem occur in recognizing certain characters and limitations with conventional OCR processes persist. It is most pronounced in ascenders (k, b, l, d, h, t) and descenders (g, j, p, q, y). If the characters are linked by ligatures, the ascending and descending strokes are even less recognizable to the scanners. In order to reduce the likelihood of a recognition error, it is a necessary to create a large database of stored characters and their glyphs. Feature extraction decomposes glyphs into features like lines, closed loops, line direction, and line intersections. A Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network based on Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) algorithm as a method of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been used in text identification, classification and recognition using various methods: image pattern based, text-based, mark-based etc. Also, the application of AI generates of a large database of different letter cuts, and modifications, and variation of the same letter character structure. For this purpose, the recognizability test of handwritten fonts was performed. Within main group, subgroups of independent letter characters and letter characters linked by ligatures are created, and reading errors were observed. In each subgroup, four different font families (bold stroke, alternating stroke, monoline stroke, and brush stroke) were tested. In subgroup of independent letter characters, errors were observed in similar rounded lines such as the characters a, and e. In the subgroup of letter characters linked by ligatures, errors were also observed in similar rounded lines such as the letter characters a and e, m and n, but also in ascenders b and l, and descenders g and q. Furthermore, seven letter cuts were made from each basic test letters, and up to are thin, ultra-light, light, regular, semi-bold, bold, and ultra-bold, and stored in the existing EMNIST database. The scanning test was repeated, and recently obtained results showed a decrease in the deviation rate, i.e. higher accuracy. Reducing the number of deviations shows that the neural network gives acceptable answers but requires creation of a larger database within about 56,000 different characters.

Abstract (sommario):
New paradigms were born in the fields of scientific research and technological development, in the way of doing business, in the nature of work, and in business management. Classic education involves two types of actors: teachers and students. The information technology has changed this, proposing basically a new communicational paradigm, resizing the role of classical actors and involving in this process also IT experts, programmers and media technicians. Education was not left aside by the technological phenomenon, which brought about essential changes that created new methods, models and paradigms in the postmodern education. Distance learning is not an invention of modern times. This type of study was born very shortly after the appearance of written language, but has only grown stronger since the modern era. In this context, the paper aims to put some light on the concept of e-learning, by presenting its evolution, some of the main features, advantages and recommended requirements for an effective approach of distance education. The development, during the recent years, of the information and communication technology (ICT) has had a profound impact on the conduct of everyday activities in all aspects of the society. Thus, new paradigms were born in the fields of scientific research and technological development, in the way of doing business, in the nature of work, and in business management. Education, as an activity essential to the societal development, could not be left aside the technological phenomenon, which brought about essential changes that created new methods, models and paradigms in the postmodern education.

Yetkin, Oguz, Karmina Calderon, Prissha Krishna Moorthy, Thao Thu Nguyen, Jennifer Tran, Taylor Terry, Anthony Vigil et al. "A Lightweight Wearable American Sign Language Translation Device". In 2022 Design of Medical Devices Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/dmd2022-1053.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A lightweight wearable American Sign Language translation device is presented consisting of optically communicating rings worn on each finger and wireless devices worn on each fingernail. The device is similar in principle to glove based sign language translation devices except it does not require the user to wear an entire glove. Each ring is constructed from optically clear resin containing three infrared transponders, controlled by a microcontroller unit worn on the wrist. The fingernail units are also cast in clear resin and contain circuitry to receive and respond to infrared light, and house three small SR60 watch batteries. The system uses a microcontroller to flash all LEDs in succession and create matrix sensor readings from each LED, resulting in a 15x15 matrix corresponding to a signed gesture, recognized by an Artificial Neural Network. This system is expected to be able to recognize 24 of the 26 letters of the ASL alphabet and be extended to recognize arbitrary ASL signs with the integration of an accelerometer. The system currently recognizes 9 letters (A, B, D, F, K, N, O, T, X) with intention to build on this novel method of gesture recognition to construct a full-fledged ASL translator. The system is currently useable as a low-encumbrance gesture-based input system for arbitrary device control.

Abstract (sommario):
The Russian State Archive of Literature and Art holds the fond of G.V. Yudin (1840–1912), a merchant of the 2nd Guild, a well-known bibliophile, whose personality has repeatedly attracted the attention of researchers. However, the block of materials related to the Botkin family and consisting of 354 files (F. 1571. № 2114–2467) until recently remained practically not in demand. These papers cover the period from 1822 till 1870 (most of them the 1820–1840s) and relate to commercial activities of the Botkins. The difference between these documents and other Botkins’ trading papers is that they are dedicated to joint activities for all branches of the Botkins (D. K., P. K. and G. K. Botkins and their descendants). These texts shed light on the trading activities of the Botkin family in the first half of the 19th century (purchasing Russian goods for exchange in Kyakhta, buying tea there, transporting goods, wholesale tea at fairs), affecting, among other things, the participation of representatives of the senior branch of the family in these operations, about which little is known yet.

Qadir, Nawzad. "A Theoretical Overview on Teaching Sunrise Program to Kurdish EFL Learners: Sunrise 1 and Sunrise 2 as Examples". In 3rd International Conference on Language and Education. Cihan University-Erbil, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.24086/iclangedu2023/paper.958.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This paper is an attempt to tackle some theoretical issues in Sunrise program which is the latest program used for teaching English language in Iraqi Kurdistan region. It plays a stunning repertoire in teaching and using English language because it changed the way of teaching English language from teaching about language to the practical use of English. This program has been being taught to Kurdish EFL learners approximately for two decades. Thus, many studies have been conducted concerning the application of Sunrise in the field of pedagogy; however, there exist few ones about the theoretical aspects of that program. The main issue of this paper is to shed light on some theoretical linguistic aspects of Sunrise program that have a negative impact upon learning. In Sunrise, priority has been given to the existence of communicative approach which is the most significant and dominant one at present. The use of this approach has made students not to be passive participants anymore, and has also made them get involved in the dynamics of teaching. This paper concludes that too much repetition of the subjects, irregular classification of alphabetical letters and some grammatical deficiencies have made the program not to be satisfied by all teachers and students.

Barbur, J. L., D. F. Edgar e E. G. Woodward. "Measurement of the scattering characteristics of the eye in relation to pupil size". In Vision Science and its Applications. Washington, D.C.: Optica Publishing Group, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/vsia.1995.sud3.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
When the amount of scattered light in the eye is large, either as a result of changes in the structure of the eye or the presence of intense sources of light, this results in significant impairment of vision, sometimes described as disability glare (Vos and Bouman, 1959; Vos, 1984). The effects of scattered light on image resolution and sharpness can be quite significant, with massive loss of sensitivity particularly in the high frequency range (Hess and Woo, 1978; Koch and Lie, 1990). A gradual increase in scattered light with age makes it possible for the visual system to adapt to a lower image contrast and hence to tolerate as acceptable a poor level of image quality (IJspeert et al, 1990). Scattered light does not cause an immediate decrease in Snellen Acuity (which is usually measured with high-contrast letters). This apparently normal performance explains why increased scatter in often undetected in routine eye examinations. The effects of scattered light on visual performance become more apparent in patients with opacities of the ocular media following refractive surgery, in cases of corneal oedema, keratoconus, cataracts and various forms of corneal dystrophy (Koch, 1989; Elliot et al, 1989). The ability to measure reliably small changes in the level and angular distribution of scattered light in the eye has been of interest clinically in monitoring the effects of drugs on media opacities or the recovery of corneal transparency following photorefractive keratectomy (Lohmann et al, 1991). In spite of what are potentially useful clinical applications for the measurement of the scatter function of the eye, the monitoring of small changes in light scatter parameters has not been very successful in a clinical context, the level of variability being very high (Elliot and Bullimore, 1993). One aim of the present study is to investigate the extent to which measured variability can be attributed to instrumentation and measurement error or to genuine changes in the pattern of scattered light in the same eye. In addition, the scattering of light may not always be uniform over the pupil, as a result of non-uniform distribution of ocular opacities and scattering centres. Measuring the effect of pupil size on light scatter is therefore important and may account for some of the observed variability. Unless the size of the pupil is known at the time of measurement, and its effects accounted for, small changes in light scatter parameters (i.e., the k and n values below) cannot be separated from the effects of pupil size, and hence they cannot be attributed easily to other factors under investigation. Another aim of this study was therefore to investigate the effect of pupil size on the scatter function of the eye.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
While in the Western societies the act of translating was a phenomenon that had a powerful tradition which started long before the sixteenth century, in the Romanian Principalities the first timid attempts were recorded at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Taking into account the translations accomplished by the nineteenth Romanian women writers and the large range of languages (French, Italian, Greek, Latin, German, English, Spanish) they used, I have tried to “discover” and “revive” as many women writers as I could, first of all by focusing all my attention on the works of the neglected women (writers) translators. The present research, which limits only to Romanian women writers that translated writings of foreign women authors, needs also a special attention to finding biographical data about the translators since a lot of them used pen names (few writers used even more than three pen names) or signed their writing or translations only with the initial letters of their names, especially for the works published in installments. There is a significant amount of research in order to bring to light all the translated works since most of them can be found only in (incomplete) issues of journals, almanacs, literary magazines, theatre’s journals, or manuscripts. By using the international database Women Writers in History we may involve researchers and students from many European countries in contributing with important information concerning their women writers. There are also negotiations with national libraries in 25 countries around Europe in order to get partners for this database which offers open access.
