Abstract (sommario):
The revitalization of Indigenous ways of knowing and being with land is central to addressing the devastating impacts of climate change. This article contributes to growing research in Indigenous Climate Change Studies by focusing on connections between ecology, sexuality, and gender. To track the histories of gendered violence for Two Spirit peoples is to also follow the marked wounds of land dispossession, excavation, and exploitation. Conversely, Two Spirit futures are deeply imbricated in not only surviving but also flourishing among post-apocalyptic conditions. Through socio-linguistic analyses of western animacy hierarchies and a historical analysis of colonial fables which casted the racialized-gendered other as monstrous, this article critiques popularized end-of-the-world discourses on climate change narratives. Alternatively, the article concludes by offering a reading of Indigiqueer speculative science fiction, gleaning methods of not only survival and resistance but also resilience amongst post-apocalyptic conditions. Ultimately, this paper argues that the revitalization of Indigenous genders is in-part linked to the present revitalization and protection of ecological life-worlds, centering Two Spirit knowledge at what settlers may fear to be “the end of the world.”

Abstract (sommario):
In this study, on the basis of the documents preserved in the Archives of Dubrovnik, the author has described the activities of the family Alberto (Bono) in Dubrovnik, in the Serbian lands and Venice at the end of the 14th and during the first half of the 15th century. The founder of the family was ser Alberto Bono, chancellor by vocation. He came to Dubrovnik from Venice in 1388 and worked as a clerk in the city municipality until the end of his life (1407). However, his sons and a grandson were engaged in intermediary commerce, connecting the lands in the hinterlands of Dubrovnik, Serbia and Bosnia, with the Mediterranean. Thanks to the commerce of precious metals from the Serbian lands, the family became very rich and outstanding. The members of the family, as the citizens of Dubrovnik, were included both in the economical and social life of the city. It could be seen, among other things, that they all, like many other rich and distinguished citizens of Dubrovnik, were elected into the ranks of the Antunini, that they were given lands in Konavle and in the Dubrovnik settlements (commercial colonies). In the Serbian lands some of them, even very often, were elected into judicial commissions. Nevertheless, the members of the family Alberti maintained all the time business and family relations with their land of origin.

Abstract (sommario):
Within the framework of this article, the problems that have arisen in connection with the use of distant pasture lands are considered. The lands of transhumance are owned by the Republic of Dagestan and are agricultural lands. Historically, hundreds of settlements arose on these lands, where about 80 thousand citizens have been living for decades, having built capital housing construction and other real estate objects. In this connection, difficulties arose related to the implementation of the constitutional rights of these citizens. Citizens were deprived of the opportunity to acquire ownership of residential buildings and register at the place of residence, and also did not receive social security services, gas supply, water supply, that is, there were no conditions for normal life. The article analyzes the practice of using the lands of transhumance in the Republic of Dagestan. In conclusion, the relevant conclusions and proposals for rational use of distant pasture lands are presented.

Abstract (sommario):
Land fragmentation continues to be a challenge throughout the world, the United States, and particularly in the rapidly growing Southeast, as well as every state with a metropolitan area that abuts rural lands. With a United States population expected to grow to more than 500 million by 2060, it will present exceptional challenges for planners and policy makers to preserve important agricultural lands for farms and forests to provide both food and fiber, as well as to provide a host of ecosystem services and enhance the quality of life for our growing population. These issues of fragmentation are extremely substantial for African American, other minority, and limited-income landowners in the U.S. South, who often lack wills and have lands that are broken up into small parcels, or have divided ownership rights in one parcel, when passed on to heirs. Existing efforts can be expanded to provide tools and incentives for the owners of hiers property and other working lands to preserve them, and state and municipal planners will need to promote development plans and practices thoughtfully and strategically in order to prevent the projected loss of nearly 18 million acres of working lands by the year 2040.

Abstract (sommario):
The article examines the symbolic meaning of the horse’s stirrup as a sign of taking a vassal oath. The analysis of the problem was carried out based on the study of the broader context of the rituals of European chivalry. In particular, it is shown the distinction between the rank of Officium stratoris and Officium stratoris et strapae. Based on the use of Hungarian medieval monuments, as well as Kyiv and Volhynia chronicles (Ipatian chronicle collection), it was proved that the representatives of the military elite of the Halychyna and Volhynia lands were familiar with the difference in these rites – from showing respect to the rider (when holding the bridle) to indicating a direct dependent position (when holding the stirrup). These customs appeared in England, but were also extremely popular on the territory of continental Europe, primarily in the Holy Roman Empire. Perhaps this tradition came to Rus’ from the German lands, where already from the XIV century similar chivalric rituals began to be recorded in the city laws. So, such traditions passed into the sphere of medieval legislation. In the research, the main emphasis is placed on the case of 1153, when after the death of his father, the prince of Halychyna Yaroslav Volodymyrovych (Osmomysl) offered to negotiate peace with the Kyiv duke Izyaslav Mstislavovych. Through intermediaries, the prince offered the formula «подлѣ твои стремень», which, according to medieval etiquette, meant recognition of his subordinate position. Note that half a century later, the boyars of Halychyna did not forget the significance of this ritual and tried to unite other service people around them. This is demonstrated by the example of the boyar Dobroslav, who in 1241 gathered around his stirrup, according to the chronicler, many other warriors. Dukes Danylo and Vasylko then correctly understood the demonstration of the proud boyar and deprived him of the lands he had seized. It is possible that some of the new servants of the boyar Dobroslav were expelled from the Halychyna land by Romanovids earlier. Thus, the Rus’ military elite understood the rituals of medieval chivalry. It proved the existence of strong connections between the nobility of these princely lands and the European culture of that time.

Abstract (sommario):
<p>Lands play an important role in our life. It becomes part of people’s life because lands are used to be the graveyards where the dead bodies are buried. The graveyard is also called as the ‘final resting place.’ As the role is very significant, especially in the life of customary village members in Bali, lands are often disputed among the members of one and other customary villages. The dispute becomes the object of many cases that ruins harmonious situation of native people in Bali. Take for example, the dispute that takes place in Banjar Adat Ambengan and Banjar Adat Semana Ubud District, Gianyar Regency and Bali Province. The problem to be solved is to investigate the causes of conflict as well as the implementation of land for peace, harmony, appropriateness and the parties involved in the settlement of the dispute. The investigation on the case that took place between the two customary villages was conducted through descriptive qualitative method supported by the case study approach. The finding showed that the dispute was settled by applying mediation method conducted through the meeting of the involved parties. It occurred several times with the principles of peace, harmony, and appropriateness to meet the society that live peacefully and harmoniously where people respect the existing customary law.</p>

Between the Revolution of 1848 and the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, imperial Austria experienced an extraordinary expansion of nationalism and of national conflict. German, Czech, Polish, Ukrainian, Italian, Slovene, and other national movements became major players and rivals, transforming public life in the process. This essay examines that process through a municipal lens. What was particular about the intersection of the national in imperial Austria with the municipal? How did municipal and national politics affect one another, and what can we understand, through their dynamics, about Austrian politics more generally?

Abstract (sommario):
Currently, among the most important priorities of any state is to ensure safety and favorable conditions for human life, limit the negative impact of economic and other activities on the environment and provide the protection and rational use of natural resources in the interests of present and future generations, as well as increasing the attractiveness of urbanized areas. In order to ensure and maintain a favorable environmental situation in the built-up and development areas and to improve the quality of life, there is a need for monitoring the lands of urbanized locations, as well as unique natural complexes and objects using modern technologies and geographic information systems. The authors propose the crowdsourcing platform “EcoZemNavigator” and the geoinformation system “Monitoring of lands of specially protected natural areas ofthe Tyumen region” for information support, exchanging up-to-date data, creating a regional monitoring system for the spatial development of the Tyumen oblast territory based on information technologies.

Palmer, Brian C. "Predation on Domestic Sheep on Summer Range Lands in Southwestern Utah". DigitalCommons@USU, 2009. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/362.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Much of the decline of the U.S. sheep industry has been attributed to losses caused by predators. Most predatory losses are inflicted on lambs rather than ewes. Losses have historically ranged from 4-8% of lamb crops, inflicting significant financial loss on ranchers. However, most research providing data on sheep predation is over 20 years old. Changes in the sheep industry as well as predation rates may make previous loss rates inapplicable to current conditions. Coyotes (Canis latrans) are the primary predator of concern when it comes to sheep losses, but increasingly, cougars (Felis concolor) and black bears (Ursus americanus) are reported to be responsible for an increased proportion of lamb losses. I replicated a sheep depredation study conducted during the early 1970s in southwestern Utah and compared the results of the two studies to reassess losses and the predator species responsible for those losses. Total lamb losses to all causes in my study were comparable to losses reported in the 1970s as well as categories of verified and estimated predator losses. There was a significant variation in lamb losses between the 2 years of my study due to an increase in predator kills on sheep. Cougar and bear depredations occurred at significantly higher rates during my study than during the 1970s but did not produce an additive effect to overall predator losses. Most lambs killed by predators were located on or near pasture bed grounds as reported by other studies, but a large number were found >500 m from bed grounds. Rough terrain and scavenging by California condors (Gymnogyps californianus) made location of missing sheep difficult. The ability of cougars and bears to remove sheep carcasses from kill sites made the finding of sheep carcasses more difficult and caused an underreporting of sheep killed by these predators. I found that the loss of sheep to predation continues to be a problem for the sheep industry and its magnitude was unchanged from historic predation levels.

Vaughan, Angus A. "Discharge-Suspended Sediment Relations: Near-channel Environment Controls Shape and Steepness, Land Use Controls Median and Low Flow Conditions". DigitalCommons@USU, 2016. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/5191.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
We analyzed recent total suspended solids (TSS) data from 45 gages on 36 rivers throughout the state of Minnesota. Watersheds range from 32 to 14,600 km2 and represent a variety of distinct settings in terms of topography, land cover, and geologic history. Our study rivers exhibited three distinct patterns in the relationship between discharge and TSS: simple power functions, threshold power functions, and peaked or negative power functions. Differentiating rising and falling limb samples, we generated sediment rating curves (SRC) of form TSS = aQb, Q being normalized discharge. Rating parameters a and b describe the vertical offset and steepness of the relationships. We also used the fitted SRCs to estimate TSS values at low flows and to quantify event-scale hysteresis. In addition to quantifying the watershed-average topographic, climatic/hydrologic, geologic, soil and land cover conditions, we used high-resolution lidar topography data to characterize the near-channel environment upstream of gages. We used Random Forest statistical models to analyze the relationship between basin and channel features and the rating parameters. The models enabled us to identify morphometric variables that provided the greatest explanatory power and examine the direction, form, and strength of the partial dependence of the response variables on individual predictor variables. The models explained between 43% and 60% of the variance in the rating curve parameters and determined that Q-TSS relation steepness (exponent) was most related to near-channel morphological characteristics including near-channel local relief, channel gradient, and proportion of lakes along the channel network. Land use within the watershed explained most variation in the vertical offset (coefficient) of the SRCs and in TSS concentrations at low flows.

Van, Scoyoc Matthew W. "A QUANTITATIVE APPROACH TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECOLOGICAL SITES AND STATE-AND-TRANSITION MODELS". DigitalCommons@USU, 2014. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/3075.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The interaction of land-use and climate can cause non-linear “state” changes in ecosystems, characterized by persistent differences in structure and function. Changes in land-use and climate on the Colorado Plateau may be driving many ecosystems toward undesired states where energy-intensive measures are required to return to previous states. Landscape classification systems based on “ecological potential” offer a robust framework to evaluate ecological conditions. Ecological sites are a popular landscape classification system based on long-term ecological potential and are widely used throughout the western US. Ecological sites have been described extensively for rangelands and woodlands on DOI Bureau of Land Management lands; however, they have yet to be described on USDA Forest Service (USFS) lands. In this thesis, I describe a statistical approach to ecological site delineation and the development of state-and-transition models, diagrams that illustrate ecosystem dynamics and responses to disturbances. In Chapter 2, I used a large inventory dataset and multivariate statistical procedures to classify plots based on life zone, soils, and potential vegetation, effectively delineating statistical ecological site-like groups. Most of the statistical ecological sites matched ecological sites already described by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Additionally, I described one new ecological site that has not been described by the NRCS in the Colorado Plateau region. In Chapter 3, I examined empirical evidence for alternative states in mountain ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Lawson & C. Lawson) and upland piñon-juniper ecosystems. Using multivariate statistical procedures, I found that plots cluster into groups consistent with generalized alternative states identified in a priori conceptual models. Additionally, I showed that ponderosa pine clusters were true alternative states and piñon-juniper clusters were not true alternative states because they were confounded by similarities in climate. Ponderosa pine clusters were differentiated by overstory ponderosa pine density and corresponded to three states: current potential, high fuel load, and reduced overstory. These results illustrate the range of ecosystem variability that is present throughout the study area and present evidence for alternatives states caused by historical land-use. This project is the first to propose ecological sites and state-and-transition models on USFS lands in this region. These techniques could be applied to areas that do not have formally described ecological sites and state-and-transition models and could help identify ecological sites that may have been overlooked using other means of delineation. Additionally, these methods can be used to evaluate the range of ecological variability throughout an area of interest and to improved understanding of ecosystem dynamics.

Enns, Sandra Rachelle. "There is no other land, there is no other life but this : an investigation into the impact of gender on social capital and resilience in four rural, island communities of British Columbia". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1009.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study investigates the relationship between gender, social capital and resilience in four of British Columbia’s rural, island communities. Each community’s unique circumstances provide a distinctive context in which to study the interaction between these concepts. This study utilizes quantitative data from several sources, including Statistics Canada, BC Stats, and a mail out survey conducted by the Resilient Communities Project (RCP). This study also utilizes qualitative data from several sources, including two sets of RCP interviews, interviews carried out in the Haida First Nation community of Old Massett, and participant observation. The results of these case studies confirm the necessity of taking context into consideration in any study of the operation of social capital. Within this specific context, social networks operate very differently than in an urban setting. The small size of these rural communities means that the entire community functions as one social network, within which residents have ties of differing strengths. The strength of their ties determines their access to resources within the network, as access to these resources is only given to those who are accountable and trustworthy. Through visible and repeated social interaction, residents built strong ties to one another. These ties allow for processes of generalized reciprocity to take place, wherein residents give to others with no immediate expectation of receiving back, knowing that should they need help, it will be available. This process relies entirely on the trust built up through repeated interactions and the sanctions imposed on those who break it, and contributes greatly to community resilience. Women play a particular role within these communities. Unlike studies that find that women are disadvantaged by their social networks, the results of this study find that women have parlayed their higher levels of involvement in the social life of the community and the informal economy into beneficial social networks based on trust and reciprocity. In addition, their higher levels of education put them at the forefront of the new service economy with lower levels of unemployment and equal likelihood of self-employment, all of which contributes not only to individual resilience, but community resilience as well.

Shrestha, Prativa. "CARBON LIFE-CYCLE AND ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF FOREST CARBON SEQUESTRATION AND WOODY BIOENERGY PRODUCTION". UKnowledge, 2013. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/forestry_etds/14.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Sequestering carbon in standing biomass, using woody bioenergy, and using woody products are the three potential ways to utilize forests in reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs) and mitigating climate change. These forestry related strategies are, however, greatly influenced by the existing markets and market based policies. This study focuses on the first two forest strategies. It investigates the combined impact of carbon and woody bioenergy markets on two different types of forests in the US – oak dominated mixed hardwood forests in the Central Hardwood Forests Region and loblolly pine forests in the southeastern US. A modification of the Harman model was used for the economic analysis of carbon sequestration and harvesting woody biomass for bioenergy. A forest carbon life-cycle assessment was used to determine the carbon emissions associated with management of forests and harvesting of wood products. Results from this study indicate that carbon payments and woody bioenergy production increase the land expectation value (LEV) for both forest types.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Estuarine marshes are generally considered to be productive but not necessarily diverse ecosystems. During 24 consecutive months, I collected 65,000 fishes and decapods comprising over 65 species from the New Orleans Land Bridge, an estuarine salt marsh. My research details the distribution of nekton across five contiguous but geomorphically different regions, which I defined as “Areas”. This factor “Area” was significant in explaining community composition differences in 11 of the 24 months I evaluated. That is, during those 11 months community structure was different among the Areas. Specific “month” was also found to be a significant factor as community structure was found to differ among the months. No consistent abiotic factors were associated with community structure. These observations imply that a different set of factors are associated with community structure at the Area level than at the microhabitat level. Sampling of nekton in shallow estuarine salt marsh habitats was difficult. The cast net is a useful gear type for this type of sampling and can be readily standardized for each operator. Standardization of the area covered by the net allows density of collected nekton to be calculated. Little is known about the life cycle of one important estuarine dependent sport fish, tarpon (Megalops atlanticus), in southeastern Louisiana. This research details the presence of the major life stages of the species in Louisiana and suggests that it is capable of completing its life cycle in State waters. The presence of a spawning capable female and male tarpon is documented.

Abstract (sommario):

Farran, Sue. "Vanuatu : lands in a sea of islands". Thesis, Northumbria University, 2013. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/15613/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This collection of eight single-authored papers published between 2008 and 2012, provides detailed and critical insight into land issues in the Pacific island country of the Republic of Vanuatu. Developed largely from conference papers delivered to international audiences, these publications make a novel and significant contribution to the prior knowledge base in a number of ways. Firstly, the research behind these papers has combined physical proximity to the subject matter – through being based in Vanuatu for several years, with access to a range of legal and other materials as well as personal insights, with a broader intellectual expertise in the law of property and trusts as introduced into the region. A combination of doctrinal and empirical research has made it possible to give a specifically focussed law in context and law in practice perspective, while not losing sight of the inter-relationship of law and society. In this way the existing knowledge base founded on anthropological and ethnological studies has been given a further and contemporary, legal dimension. Secondly, the desire to reach a wider audience than the regional or local, has meant that these publications have engaged Vanuatu as a case-study with broader themes, sometimes starting from the local and exploring outwards and sometimes starting from the global and narrowing in on Vanuatu as a concluding focus. While recognising all that makes Vanuatu unique, the contribution that this collection makes is to bring this island study from the particular to the general, in from the margins or as part of a removed and rather isolated area of study, towards the mainstream. Thirdly, these publications articulate land developments at a crucial moment. The first decade of the twenty-first century, has been a time of increased public awareness of land issues in Vanuatu and in the Pacific region more generally, and a time of increased donor intervention in land and law related activities. That this research and the related research that informs it, is integral to this process has been evidenced by cross referencing to some of the work and other indicators of esteem by aid donors, inter-state agencies and other academics. Land remains a site of contestation in Vanuatu. The critical analysis of present issues, against the historical context of colonial rule and its subsequent influence; the introduction of foreign laws and institutions and the continuing importance of unwritten customary law, exposes many of the challenges that are encountered in trying to frame a way forward and engages with controversies surrounding land policy, land law and the management of this most fundamental resource.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractFrom long experience with each other, Indigenous Peoples know their Lands—and the beings, energies, and relationships with whom they share their universe—as related. They exist within a relational, storied matrix, spoken and heard, felt and lived in words and through silences, sung, prayed, and envisioned within their own cycles, and remembered in the spiritual geographies of their Lands. This piece reflects on embodied Indigenous intergenerational knowledge relations as lived through the spiritual activism of Lakota Elder Rosalie Little Thunder and articulated in her perennial question, “What does it mean to be a good relative?” Her Lakota ethical practice centered around this question—and it was a question she asked of the rest of the world, so that they might imagine a different way of being, a possibility of waking up the human beings in this time of massive human destruction of all life, the life systems of Earth. Rosalie’s question is a wakeup call that frames human survival from within a Lakota perspective of the world, asking the world’s human beings what it means to be a good relative. This perception of relationality holds the possibility for radically re-imagining different possibilities, transformative shifts in consciousness, and different futurities.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Thomas More ‘s dialogue Utopia (1517) consists of an imaginary debate between More himself, his friend the Flemish humanist Peter Giles, and a fictional traveller, Raphael Hythloday, who has visited Utopia (translatable either as ‘no place ‘ or ‘good place ‘). Hythloday is introduced as a Portuguese, a man who had accompanied Amerigo Vespucci on one of his famous voyages to the New World, and had been left behind in Brazil. He has come across Utopia in his wanderings. The egalitarian and communistic state of Utopia, while providing a commentary on the practices of Tudor England, also catches up significant aspects of the voyages of Columbus and his successors. Their encounters with the peoples of the Americas and with their different languages, cultures, religions, and social organizations, challenged assumptions-ultimately derived from Aristotle-that human life everywhere was governed by certain universal laws. In particular, Utopia avoided war and property-holding; it had no knowledge of the Christian faith and no respect for gold, which was used only for objects of shame--chamber-pots or prison fetters. The many literary treatments of the New World that followed constantly returned to a few distinctive features of More ‘s imaginary country: the possibility of an alternative society; the absence of God; the presence of gold (which the Utopians hoarded yet despised). The Americas offered imaginative spaces on to which Europeans projected the desires that their culture had aroused yet failed to satisfy: desires for a more just society; for the proper exercise of authority, whether religious or civil; but above all, for instant and limitless wealth.

The formal and informal political authority of René de Challant was rooted in his kin relations. He inherited titles, lands, and relationships through the ancestors of both of his parents, and through affinal kin. The territorial dimension of the connections spread from northern Italy to the transalpine Sabaudian lands, and from Iberia to the Swiss lands and the Franche-Comté. René’s family interacted socially with other nobles in the Valle d’Aosta and elsewhere, consolidating their shared position as members of the elite but also engaging in sharp legal conflicts when their landed or jurisdictional interests collided.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter focuses on the “Great River” (Kwinitekw or Connecticut River) that runs the length of the Northeast, and the multi-layered histories involved at its midpoint. At Peskeomskut, Algonquians from multiple tribal communities had gathered for thousands of years for fishing, planting, and socializing. This important waterfall came under attack in May 1676 in the latter stages of King Philip’s War, as colonial troops endeavoured to subdue and displace Algonquians who had not surrendered by that point in the conflict. These tensions arose from several decades of colonization in the river valley, which entangled Natives and colonizers in fur-trading relationships that sometimes spiralled into coercion and violence. Following the massacre of 1676 (led by William Turner), many Algonquian survivors regrouped with Native communities in other parts of the Northeast or followed a widespread diaspora in pursuit of safety. The chapter turns to how colonists at places like Deerfield, Massachusetts engaged in remembrance of the violences at the falls and nearby “Bloody Brook,” through ephemeral as well as more tangible processes. It accounts for the emergence of heritage organizations like the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, which pursued an extensive place-marking campaign in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses how the arid West's remaining public lands became sites for locating federally funded projects. These were to generate power and water to meet the demands of its burgeoning urban areas, where most of the land had long been in private ownership. The public lands also furnished large amounts of open space for recreation and inspiration, which contributed to the quality of life in western urban oases. Over those decades, Congress made more federal dollars available to build and operate reclamation-project works than it did for managing national forests, parks, and all other public lands combined. As the western states' reaction to the Garfield Committee's recommendation had made clear, this transformation in the reclamation program made it easy for most western politicians to accept, indeed to welcome, the continued ownership by the national government of vast expanses of mostly arid public lands in their midst.

Abstract (sommario):
Due to its multifunctional characteristics; soil organic matter has great importance not only for soil fertility by providing many plant nutrients, increasing plant available water and microbial activity, but also for structural improvement of soil by creating stable aggregates. However, the existence of this valuable resource is rapidly decreasing in Turkish soils, as in many other geographical regions of the World, mainly due to land use/land cover changes and high rates of soil erosion. In terms of drought and desertification, which are the most obvious negative effects of climate change, Türkiye is among the high-risk countries. One of the most important threats to soil functions, which are directly related to climate change-related crop production, is the loss of soil organic matter. Soil degradation due to organic matter loss that threaten the food, energy and water security of human beings in today's world, carries the risk of becoming more prominent and destructive on the axis of global-scale climate change and oppressive and unsustainable management practices on natural resources. However, it is clear that with the sustainable management of soil, which is known as the biggest organic carbon stock pool of terrestrial ecosystems, it plays a key role in minimizing the negative effects of climate change. The carbon storage capacity of soil depends on the local climate and existing land cover at the upper scale, but it also affected by solum depth, soil parent material, soil moisture and soil temperature regime, and the most importantly by soil and plant management practices. In other words, the factor that creates variability and has the opportunity to change is the human-induced soil/plant management factor. Increasing organic-C stocks in the soil is directly related to the balancing of land degradation and the effectiveness of the implementation of sustainable land and forest management strategies. In this context; minimizing erosion losses for all land use types and preventing misuse of lands, and especially in agricultural areas where organic carbon loss is manageable, dissemination of ecosystem-oriented - regenerative agriculture and climate-friendly agricultural techniques, application of reduced, minimum or zero tillage systems, adding plant residues and organic inputs into the soil have very important places. This paper describes the effective ways of increasing soil organic carbon stocks in soil with different aspects.

Abstract (sommario):
There are significant differences in carbon and nitrogen storage of soils developed under to different land uses in areas where climate, bedrock and other external factors are similar. This study was carried out to determine soil carbon and nitrogen stocks of forest (O), Agriculture (T) and bare (B) areas, including Ahir Mountain Green belt afforestation area in Kahramanmaraş province. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples (72 in total) were collected from the topsoil (0-20 cm) of 36 systematically determined points on Mount Ahir. Soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (N) and bulk weight (BD) analyzes were made in soil samples. The amount of carbon and nitrogen stored in the area was estimated by using the data obtained as a result of the analyzes and the inequalities. According to the data, the amount of carbon stored in forest, agriculture and clearing areas is 75.49 t C Ha-1, 73.56 t C Ha-1 and 47.31 t C Ha-1; the amount of stored nitrogen was found to be 6.05 t N Ha-1, 7.67 t N Ha-1 and 4.40 t N Ha-1. Forest soils have approximately 46% more carbon than bare areas soils and 5% more than agricultural soils. In terms of total nitrogen amount, it was found 20% higher in the soils of agricultural areas compared to forest and 50% more than in bare space soils. It has been determined that there are significant differences in the chemical parameters of the soils belonging to the lands with different land use capabilities, especially in the C and N concentrations. Examining this change reveals the effect of land use on carbon and nitrogen stocks of soils. Changes in the organic C and N status of our soils, which are of great importance for a sustainable agriculture, should be well observed.

Abstract (sommario):
Much literature is available on fungal lipids and their capability as a renewable oil platform for alternate fuels, chemicals, and food products. Microbial oils will not displace all edible oils soon, given techno-economical hurdles in commercialization. However, continued research & development can flatten the curve of deforestation and land-use impacts associated with cultivating these crops. To better understand how oleaginous yeasts and fungi could alleviate the challenges related to the energy-environment-food nexus, it becomes critical to investigate their potential environmental impacts quantitively compared to other feedstocks. Life cycle analysis or assessment (LCA) is a standard tool used for this purpose. LCA studies are not being conducted on a broader scale for fungus-derived oils than their phototrophic algal counterparts. The different stages in the life cycle of fungal lipid production that can be analyzed for environmental implications include cultivation and fermentation, oil extraction; further downstream processing; and end-use. The LCA method for fungal lipid-derived biofuel production systems should cover the main sustainability concerns of biofuel production systems: energy efficiency, climate change, and land occupation. With the scope of microbial oil applications expanding beyond non-fuel encompassing food, supplements, and medicines, their subsequent environmental implications need to be investigated. Further work is required in this area. There are significant knowledge gaps in life cycle inventory and impact assessment information for non-fuel applications.

Thermal barrier coating life is dependent on many intrinsic and extrinsic variables within the environment that they operate within. Intrinsic variables include material composition, mechanical and thermal properties, microstructure and ceramic coating thickness. On the other hand, extrinsic variables include cycle time, interface and top surface temperatures, and the gaseous environment, among others. Laboratory testing was conducted to determine the effects of these variables on TBC life. This paper addresses TBC life as a function of microstructure, thickness, and interface temperature.

Abstract (sommario):
There are two new persons born each and every second on Earth, persons that will need space to live, just as we do. Should we build new cities, then, without question? The “population of a single day” is going to require territory, which, according to today’s standards, equals the area of France or Ukraine (Zipser). Therefore villages, cities and especially metropolises require much more space for expansion. Things become problematic when metropolises are faced with a lack of space to expand Metropolises behave like cancerous tumors – they try to possess or occupy any urban structure within their reach, including agricultural lands and forests. Is it even possible to plan such a rapid growth? Certain cases point to the fact that it is indeed possible, while others – that it is not possible at all. Thus, we are faced with the question of what should we do when the development of metropolises outpaces even the fastest planning processes? In these cases, metropolitan authorities need to anticipate problems related to infrastructure, transportation, as well as unemployment and rising crime rates. The metropolitan way of life causes not only spatial, but also social problems as well. The subdivisions within the social structures of metropolises are transformed in accordance with the quality of their spatial structures and vice versa. The question as to who “owns” the public spaces of metropolises is more important than the real ownership of the land they are built upon. Public spaces become an expression of their respective metropolises through the image of their urban and architectural forms. The inhabitants and people “that are coming in” can only identify themselves with and respect the rules of the space that they live, work and relax in only under the condition of the existence of spatial order. Contrary to those metropolitan areas that have been abandoned or are underused, the social aspect of reusing land that has once been converted from an agricultural form of use, or any other for that matter, plays an important part in the appropriate creation of social and spatial balance in the development of public spaces, as well as modern metropolises, oriented towards innovative technologies.

Abstract (sommario):
British Columbia is home to 34 different Indigenous languages, most of which are in danger of losing fluency due to the combined effects of introduced diseases and assimilationist Indian Residential Schools. The Haida language, or Xaad Kil (pronounced “haad kill”), is considered critically endangered with only 9 elderly fluent speakers left. Many Haida believe that revitalizing Xaad Kil is important for keeping their culture alive: they see Xaad Kil as a cultural keystone that keeps worldview, artistic expression, food gathering, dances, stories, and songs integrated together as a unified whole. Xaad Kil also helps assert Aboriginal land rights: identification of traditional place names demonstrates use and occupation of lands since time immemorial. Xaad Kil names of medicinal plants and foods also contain important environmental information. Indigenous communities are adopting a range of strategies to revitalize their languages, including: master-apprentice programs, early childhood immersion programs, and technological approaches such as audio databases, language apps, and social media projects like Haidawood. Learning Xaad Kil can be a challenge: there are limited resources and often language learners are overwhelmed with obstacles. Haidawood helps make Haida language learning fun by bringing Haida stories to life using the power of stop motion animation and embracing an “aesthetic of accessibility” that creates beautiful art out of readily available materials, including carved puppet faces and sets made from cardboard. Haidawood seeks to help revitalize the Haida language, facilitate inter-cultural understanding, and inspire other communities to preserve and share their own stories.

Abstract (sommario):
Conventional maintenance schedules and scheduling techniques are typically based on the manufacturer’s guidelines and applied to all engines of a certain make and model. This approach does not always address the specific operating environment and requirements for each operator. An alternative to this conventional “one schedule suits all” approach is the Component Management Program described in the paper. This type of program is designed to tailor maintenance requirements to suit the specific operating environment of the operator’s engine or fleet of engines. The program is intended to extend and optimize maintenance intervals and at the same time ensure reliability of the components. The paper outlines the metallurgical analysis and other techniques that are incorporated into a Component Management Program, the tracking systems used to schedule maintenance, and some case studies where these programs have been used to extend component life and reliability.

Abstract (sommario):
Hagiographies of old Serbian literature speak of rulers as individuals chosen by God, for the benefit of the people and the country they will rule. Archbishop Danilo, writing about his contemporary, points out that King Milutin surpassed all his predecessors in terms of gender and position in the country. Apart from the typical elements - describing the good deeds of the king, as well as his imposing fundraising endeavors, the peculiarity of this life is reflected in the constant emphasis on God's help to the great king during military campaigns. Regardless of whether the initiator of the conflict was King Milutin himself or the attack on Serbian lands came from the other side, those who opposed the king were punished with a horrible death, thwarted in the endeavor or diplomatically deterred from the original plan. The help that comes from the metaphysical spaces of Good and Truth is at the same time a description of miracles, but the kind of miracle that is less talked about in medieval literature - when the intervention of the Lord punishes, in the already mentioned ways, those who chose the path of evil. Since every attack of others on the Serbian king and the Serbian land is clearly motivated by the invention of the dishonorable, placing King Milutin in opposition to such exponents of reality indirectly speaks of his godliness, correctness of his decisions and actions, but also his orientation towards eschatology.

Advanced repair technologies have been introduced to the gas turbine industry over recent years. An increasing selection of coating systems is available which can be tailored to the specific operating environment. Automated welding systems and the use of custom weld filler metals for enhanced component life provide a means of reliably welding the new generation of high strength turbine blade alloys. Powder metallurgy processes have been introduced as an alternative to welding and have been used to upgrade certain components by employing higher strength repair materials than the original castings. In the paper, these and other technologies are assessed based on engine operating experience with direct comparison to the conventional repair techniques which they have replaced.

Abstract (sommario):
This special report summarizes the regional workshop held 24–26 April 2018 at the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Ecological Services Office in Carlsbad, California on the importance of collaboration among federal, state, and nongovernmental agencies to facilitate the recovery of threatened and endangered species (TES). This workshop focused primarily on one species, the least Bell’s vireo (LBVI), and how to achieve full recovery and eventual delisting through agency partnerships. A major theme of the workshop was applying the Endangered Species Act (ESA) Section 7(a)(1) conservation planning process as a building block towards recovery of LBVI—as well as other threatened, endangered, and at-risk riparian species within the Southwest. The main objective of this workshop was to assemble an interagency and interdisciplinary group of wildlife biologists and managers to detail how the Section 7(a)(1) conservation planning approach, in consultation with the USFWS, can assist in the recovery of LBVI primarily on federal lands but also other public and private lands. Goals of this workshop were to (1) review Section 7(a)(1); (2) outline LBVI ecosystem processes, life history, threats, and conservation solutions; and (3) develop and organize agency commitments to collaborative conservation practices.

Abstract (sommario):
Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, and local communities produce up to 70 percent of the world’s food with lower climate change and environmental impact than agribusinesses, but many remain under the poverty threshold. They are the de facto owners and managers of massive carbon stocks in forested and non–forested ecosystems, but markets fail to fairly reward this. This is all achieved with these communities having legal rights over only 20 percent of their land and receiving only 1.7 percent of global climate finance for self–determined investment and nature conservation. Clarifying their rights and establishing solid tenure security and capital to invest in exercising those rights are a must. The need for Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, and local communities to acquire secure tenure over land and resources to achieve conservation and production goals is twofold. First, these groups need to establish a tenure safety network over their claimed lands and resources to prevent unintended consequences, like spillovers and leakages from other global responses to climate change, environmental rehabilitation, and food systems transformation. Second, they want secure tenure as part of a more enabling environment to fully unlock the potential of delivering their own solutions to current systems, threats, and opportunities.

Abstract (sommario):
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Scotland in the Roman world: Research into Roman Scotland requires an appreciation of the wider frontier and Empire-wide perspectives, and Scottish projects must be integrated into these wider, international debates. The rich data set and chronological control that Scotland has to offer can be used to inform broader understandings of the impact of Rome.  Changing worlds: Roman Scotland’s rich data set should be employed to contribute to wider theoretical perspectives on topics such as identity and ethnicity, and how these changed over time. What was the experience of daily life for the various peoples in Roman Scotland and how did interactions between incomers and local communities develop and change over the period in question, and, indeed, at and after its end?  Frontier Life: Questions still remain regarding the disposition and chronology of forts and forces, as well as the logistics of sustaining and supplying an army of conquest and occupation. Sites must be viewed as part of a wider, interlocking set of landscapes, and the study of movement over land and by sea incorporated within this. The Antonine Wall provides a continuing focus of research which would benefit from more comparison with frontier structures and regimes in other areas.  Multiple landscapes: Roman sites need to be seen in a broader landscape context, ‘looking beyond the fort’ and explored as nested and interlocking landscapes. This will allow exploration of frontier life and the changing worlds of the Roman period. To do justice to this resource requires two elements: o Development-control archaeology should look as standard at the hinterland of forts (up to c.1 km from the ‘core’), as sensitive areas and worthy of evaluation; examples such as Inveresk show the density of activity around such nodes. The interiors of camps should be extensively excavated as standard. o Integrated approaches to military landscapes are required, bringing in where appropriate topographical and aerial survey, LIDAR, geophysics, the use of stray and metal-detected finds, as well as fieldwalking and ultimately, excavation.  The Legacy of Rome: How did the longer term influence of the Romans, and their legacy, influence the formation, nature and organisation of the Pictish and other emergent kingdoms?

Abstract (sommario):
The major US household travel surveys do not ask the right questions to understand mobility in Walkable Neighborhoods. Yet few subjects can be more important for sustainability and real economic growth based on all things of value, including sustainability, affordability, and quality of life. Walkable Neighborhoods are a system of land use, transportation, and transportation pricing. They are areas with attractive walking distances of residential and local business land uses of sufficient density to support enough business and transit, with mobility comparable to suburbia and without owning an auto. Mobility is defined as the travel time typically spent to reach destinations outside the home, not trips among other destinations that are not related to the home base. A home round trip returns home the same day, a way of defining routine trips based on the home location. Trip times and purposes, taken together, constitute travel time budgets and add up to total travel time in the course of a day. Furthermore, for Walkable Neighborhoods, the analysis focuses on the trips most important for daily mobility. Mismeasurement consists of including trips that are not real trips to destinations outside the home, totaling 48 percent of trips. It includes purposes that are not short trips functional for walk times and mixing of different trips into single purposes, resulting in even less useful data. The surveys do not separate home round trips from other major trip types such as work round trips and overnight trips. The major household surveys collect vast amounts of information without insight into the data needed for neighborhood sustainability. The methodology of statistics gets in the way of using statistics for the deeper insights we need. Household travel surveys need to be reframed to provide the information needed to understand and improve Walkable Neighborhoods. This research makes progress on the issue, but mismeasurement prevents a better understanding of the issue.

Abstract (sommario):
We do not live in a vacuum. Instead, we are connected to innumerable other living entities, and our individual vantage point is only one among many. When we hear people talk about protecting the land and the landscape that we enjoy, it may be helpful to consider that each of us has a personal environment, experienced from a particular point of view. This personal environment, the landscape that we see, is made up of and affected by everything we can perceive using our senses -immobile mountains, buildings, and trees; moving animals, cars, and people; changes in light, humidity, and temperatureas well as the interactions among these things. As we observe and influence these interactions, we participate in the process of creating the landscape we experience.
