Testo completoThe purpose of this research is to investigate the information needs of rural communities in Bushbuckridge. Investing information of communities is vital because information plays an important role in enabling communities to meet their development needs, such as employment, education, health, safety, food security, and leisure. Libraries are therefore instrumental in helping library users to meet these needs. The study utilised triangulated (quantitative) and (qualitative) research methods. Participants in this study included 100 library users, four librarians and one library manager drawn from four local libraries through a combination of random (probability) and purposive (non-probability) sampling. The quantitative part of the study i.e. survey measured the perceptions of users on library services through questionnaires, while unstructured interviews elicited the experiences of librarians in addressing the information needs of library users in the four libraries of Bushbuckridge. Findings from the survey revealed, inter alia, that: most (65%) users had access to library services, although high travelling costs were a major barrier for those living in remote villages; a large number of users (60%) still depended on librarians to help them find information, while a growing number of users (33% had begun using computers and the internet to meet their information needs; the most important reasons for using the library were: assignments, study and careers, and, the majority of users in all four libraries were generally satisfied with the quality of the services rendered, although significant improvements were required in the supply of materials and water. Findings from interviews with librarians demonstrated that significant steps had been taken to address information needs of users across the four libraries. Common examples include: books and materials; computers and internet services; study groups; user training, and outreach programmes – although these were hampered by shortage of staff and vehicles. Cross-cutting problems included delays in purchasing of library materials; shortage of water and low perceptions about the benefits of library services in the community. In light of these results, it was concluded that information needs of library users had been partially met, with greater room for improvement in areas like human resources, information technology, transport and procurement systems and processes. The research findings have demonstrated that if provided well, library information services may help reduce the challenges of illiteracy, poverty and unemployment in this area. In light of these findings, the study recommended, inter alia, that the skills of library staff along with procurement systems and processes be upgraded in order to satisfy the information needs of library users in the study area. The study further recommended that outreach programmes be scaled up to increase awareness in the community about the role and benefits of library services in facilitating community development, particularly in Bushbuckridge where challenges of illiteracy, poverty and unemployment continue unabated.

Testo completoDu, Toit Elizabeth. "The music editions in the Scott Collection of the Music Library of the University of Stellenbosch before and up to 1800, excluding church music : an annotated catalogue with some notes on printers and publishers". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/58598.
Testo completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis can be summarised under the following headings: Unlocking the Scott Collection to the music world The University of Stellenbosch is in the possession of the valuable Scott Collection, as was bought from the estate of Gerrit Wessels, the beneficiary of Commander Michael Scott. The latter emigrated to South Africa because of health reasons, where he played a valuable role in the music circles of Cape Town. Music editions, manuscripts, gramophone records, and writings on music form about 20% of the Scott Collection. Providing music editions with RISM numbers and the international implication thereof The research had to determine whether editions could be listed in the RISM. This international inventory of first and early music editions lists all known and existing editions before and up to the year 1800. There are editions in the Scott Collection for example, which are some of the only few first edition copies in the world, A detailed description of the RISM and its activities are discussed in detail in Chapter 2. Creating an user-friendly catalogue for the US Music Library It was considered a great matter of importance to create an user-friendly catalogue for research purposes. The editions discussed in this thesis are therefore presented in table-form. Introducing further research possibilities Through the survey done on the applicable music editions, it was discovered that 111 editions in the Scott Collections could be listed in the RISM. Seeing that no editions harboured in South Africa are listed in the RISM at present, this matter are naturally of international importance. This also creates opportunities for further research and international publications. Conservation of old paper It became evident during the course of the research survey that the University of Stellenbosch was unaware of the monetary and international historical value of the music editions in the Scott Collection. The collection is in danger of perishing, as it is not preserved according to international standards of conserving old paper. It is also not adequately protected from fire and theft hazards. This matter and some suggestions to improve the situation, were brought under the attention of the university authorities (see Chapter 9).

Testo completoThe purpose of this Master’s thesis is to study how well the online catalogue of The Music Library of Sweden works when ordinary users are searching for sheet music. The issues studied are: Why do the users fail to find the sheet music they are looking for? Do the users take advantage of the possibilities that the classification codes of the SAB system offer? If not, why?
The source material of the study is 144 comments from a user questionnaire about the online catalogue and, in addition, the search log for one day (513 queries). The comments were sorted into seven groups depending on the type of information need, for example searches for certain instrumentation or genres and problems with spelling. Each analysis ends with suggestions for improvements of the catalogue and its instructions.
The thesis show, according to the Zipf’s principle of least effort, that sheet music searching in the online catalogue is demanding too much effort and knowledge of the users. Searching with SAB classification codes is too complicated which may be the explanation why only 2 percent of the queries in the log are code searches. In 51 of the 76 cases where users failed to find sheet music the queries would have succeeded if the patrons had used classification codes. The SAB system is thus not used as often as it deserves.
The variety and amount of failed queries in the material show that sheet music is difficult to search, for several reasons, for example the complex construction of uniform titles of musical works and that the searchable vocabulary of the online catalogue often differ from the users’ own.

Testo completoEver since digital library catalogues were first introduced in the late sixties and early seventies, there have been two separate metadata repositories for libraries in Sweden. On the one hand there is the Libris catalogue, developed and used mainly by the national library and the university libraries, and on the other hand there is the Burk catalogue for the local public libraries. For almost as long, attempts have been made to create a single, national catalogue for all Swedish libraries, but despite all efforts, including several government bills explicitly stating that this need to happen, the dual catalogue system prevails to this day. This interview study aims to find the opinions of people from different sectors of the library field on this matter. Views on integrated library systems are also debated. There seems to be great consensus among the interviewees that there is, in fact, a problem with lack of coordination of catalogues, but there is less agreement as to what should be done about it, and by whom. The study is analyzed and contextualized utilizing the debate on digital copyright in general and the theories of Tarleton Gillespie in particular. It is concluded that cooperation would be facilitated if libraries made use of open data and open source, which would suggest Libris as metadata repository and open source library systems such as Koha for ILS. Libraries assigned with interlibrary coordination, i.e. the regional and the national libraries, would have to take on a greater responsibility than the local libraries to implement these cooperations. Vendors serving libraries would have to adjust their business models if these proposals were to become reality to offer data under open licenses.

In recent years, the quantity of data explodes. Under this circumstance, automated library system records reader’s information in the database. A lot of information is hidden in the data. Data mining is to discover the data and to turn it into information which can be used. Data mining has been used in many areas such as marketing and customer relationship management (CRM). Based on the result of data mining, the owners can change merchandise display and understand customers’ life style and habits in order to increase the volume of sales. To use data mining in libraries allows us to relocate the books and to recommend book lists to readers. In the long term effect, the book circulation can be improved. Many internet services could provide different types of personalization and customization. The technologies allow the service providers to give more specific service by understanding customer behaviors. However, this technology has been neglected in the libraries. Therefore the thesis will focus on readers’ reading history in the university and will try to discover the phenomenon among clusters. The research methodology will be data analysis and data mining, especially clustering analysis. In this thesis, clustering coefficient used to analyze behaviors of reader, and link weight are used to clustering reader into groups. It is convinced that non-exclusive hierarchical cluster research method can also be applied to the internet analysis. For example, it can be used to analyze the effect of different nodes in the internet and to figure out if the node is qualified to be the core node. Moreover, it is also useful to analyze the relationship in the social network.

In the past、libraries』 records only record whether books have been returned or not. These records will not be stored after borrowers have returned the books. However、due to the advances of technology in recent years、borrower’s records can now be easily recorded and stored at the same time. These records become larger as time progresses. Nowadays、in order to improve its utility rate、libraries have evolved to actively recommending which books to read. This is done by associating the interests of readers to types of books available. The purpose of this study is to improve the libraries』 utility rate by using Data Mining to find readers』 implied associations from the large database and apply the mining’s result to recommend suitable books for readers accordingly. In this thesis、we according to borrowing database of library of Southern Taiwan University of Technology offered、and regard borrowing the data of readers as the data source mined、every one borrows data includes books and one degree of value of interest that readers for the books. Finally、according to the method put forward、we design and build a recommend system of adaptive books and reader. The result of mining、while planning reader’s personalized service to the library、can offer very useful reference information.

Designing Book Recommendation System for Library Readers based on Ubiquitous Technology Abstract Recently, the environment and knowledge collecting of traditional library is still unable to occupy its important position in human society. As the development of information technology, many traditional libraries lead in the radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to manage the books but it still lacks for providing some services for the readers who are in the library. In this study, researcher tried to find out what are the main requirements for different readers and how to make them effectively use library resources. There are two states of readers as the starting point for system design; one is a kind of the library readers who already know their borrow direction and the other is the readers who don’t know the directions, but they are interested in the book information. Due to these, this study designed some referral services for readers in the library. There are the bookcase recommendation mechanism and relational book searching function to help these two states of readers finding books in the library. The referral services can not only allow readers to achieve effectively self-learning through the system, but break the searching restrictions of traditional library for providing the service of information scanning. As well as the results of experiment and questionnaires, readers could get the books more convenient than traditional searching ways. No matter which states the readers are, they could gain the support to acquire the knowledge more flexible through the services provided by the system. Keywords: radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, bookcase recommendation mechanism, information scanning
