Golub, Koraljka. "Subject retrieval in web-based library catalogs". Licentiate thesis, Filozofski fakultet u Zagrebu, Department of Information Science, 2003. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-37099.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis has been motivated by past research, problems and realizations that online library catalog users frequently perform subject searches – using keywords, subject headings and descriptors – and these searches have yielded unsatisfactory results. Web-based catalogs or WebPACs (Web-based Online Public Access Catalogs), belonging to the so-called third generation of online catalogs and providing a wide variety of search options, remain largely underutilized despite the continuous advancement of information retrieval systems. Users still encounter a number of problems, such as those related to translating their concepts to the language of the catalog’s system and cross-references prepared to this purpose. Subject access in online library catalogs can be provided through different access points. To that purpose natural and controlled indexing and retrieval languages are used, and each among them has its advantages and downsides. Natural language indexing is performed by the computer, in which process words from defined fields are automatically extracted. Controlled indexing languages are those in which selection of terms to be assigned to documents is manually performed. These are, for example, classification systems, subject heading languages and thesauri. During the 1970s, a consensus was reached that the best retrieval results are gained when using both types of indexing languages simultaneously. Apart from indexing languages, it is necessary to take into account user search behavior; and while designing user interface one has to allow for the users’ skills and knowledge - ensuring instruction, help and feedback information at every step of the retrieval process. The aim of the research was to determine the variety and quality of subject access to information in WebPACs of British university libraries, including searching by words or classification marks, natural and controlled languages, browsing options, and forming simple and complex queries in order to conclude about existing advancements, offered models and employed methods and compare them to WebPACs of Croatian university libraries.

Sambo, Precious Kholomile. "Investigating information needs of library users : a case of Bushbuckridge Community Library". Thesis, University of Limpopo, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/2253.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (M.Inf.) --University of Limpopo, 2018
The purpose of this research is to investigate the information needs of rural communities in Bushbuckridge. Investing information of communities is vital because information plays an important role in enabling communities to meet their development needs, such as employment, education, health, safety, food security, and leisure. Libraries are therefore instrumental in helping library users to meet these needs. The study utilised triangulated (quantitative) and (qualitative) research methods. Participants in this study included 100 library users, four librarians and one library manager drawn from four local libraries through a combination of random (probability) and purposive (non-probability) sampling. The quantitative part of the study i.e. survey measured the perceptions of users on library services through questionnaires, while unstructured interviews elicited the experiences of librarians in addressing the information needs of library users in the four libraries of Bushbuckridge. Findings from the survey revealed, inter alia, that: most (65%) users had access to library services, although high travelling costs were a major barrier for those living in remote villages; a large number of users (60%) still depended on librarians to help them find information, while a growing number of users (33% had begun using computers and the internet to meet their information needs; the most important reasons for using the library were: assignments, study and careers, and, the majority of users in all four libraries were generally satisfied with the quality of the services rendered, although significant improvements were required in the supply of materials and water. Findings from interviews with librarians demonstrated that significant steps had been taken to address information needs of users across the four libraries. Common examples include: books and materials; computers and internet services; study groups; user training, and outreach programmes – although these were hampered by shortage of staff and vehicles. Cross-cutting problems included delays in purchasing of library materials; shortage of water and low perceptions about the benefits of library services in the community. In light of these results, it was concluded that information needs of library users had been partially met, with greater room for improvement in areas like human resources, information technology, transport and procurement systems and processes. The research findings have demonstrated that if provided well, library information services may help reduce the challenges of illiteracy, poverty and unemployment in this area. In light of these findings, the study recommended, inter alia, that the skills of library staff along with procurement systems and processes be upgraded in order to satisfy the information needs of library users in the study area. The study further recommended that outreach programmes be scaled up to increase awareness in the community about the role and benefits of library services in facilitating community development, particularly in Bushbuckridge where challenges of illiteracy, poverty and unemployment continue unabated.

Buys, Frederick Jacobus. "(De)constructing the archive : an annotated catalog of the Deon van der Walt Collection in the NMMU Library". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1020585.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Deon van der Walt was, at the height of his career, considered the leading lyric tenor of his generation. In a career that spanned more than 25 years he performed in the great opera houses of the world and sang for the leading conductors of the time, sharing the stage with the best singers in the world. He was the first male South African to accomplish the so-called “grand slam” of opera, having sung in the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (London), Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna), La Scala (Milan) and the Metropolitan Opera House (New York). He was also a prolific oratorio and lieder singer, collaborating with the best artists the musical world had to offer. In addition he left a large recorded legacy, both published and unpublished. His untimely death on 29 November 2005 was extensively reported on both locally and abroad - a fact which again highlighted the importance of his personal and professional contribution to the international opera world. The Deon van der Walt Collection is the single most important key to unlocking the life and career of one of the most successful South African opera singers of all time. It was bequeathed to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Library the Deon van der Walt Trust in 2007. The collection is made up of an arbitrary assortment of books, documents, sound and video recordings that were left in van der Walt’s Zürich accommodations at the time of his death in 2005. It is housed in separate section on the lower level of the South Campus Library of the NMMU. The collection has been partially catalogued by the NMMU Library but left largely unattended for the last 6 years. The compiling of an annotated catalogue of this collection is the vital first step in connecting the dots of an extraordinary musical career that was hailed as one of the greatest of his time.

Pan, Zhenghui. "A novel library catalogue system". Thesis, View thesis, 2009. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/44313.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
It has become an increasing challenge to apply knowledge management tools in modern library information systems that deliver the most up-to-date and relevant information to end users in a quick, efficient and user-friendly manner. According to a survey on city council libraries in the Sydney area, there is a proliferation of common problems associated with searching speed and accuracy, scalability and the user-friendly interface, all of which are closely related to the performance of the catalogue search scheme. The library information systems currently used in local public council libraries are usually decades old, and therefore cannot meet requirements due to the rapid increase in the amount and categories of library collections. The current marketing price for a library catalogue system (including the maintenance expenses) can be prohibitively high. While a large size organization such as a university can afford to install and maintain such a modern system for superior performance, it could be infeasible for some of the public council libraries and/or primary/high schools to purchase and maintain an existing market product to meet their ever-increasing needs. For those libraries, updating and improving the current information systems using open source software, through collaboration with universities, could provide a better solution. This Master Degree project is proposed to address such a challenge. Apart from such practical motivations, this project also possesses theoretic significance. The algorithms to be developed provide not only a practical solution for library catalogue systems but also a novel methodology applicable to database management system designing with respect to speedy and user-friendly information retrieval. The proposed web-based library system involves client/server architecture with multiple tiers. For performance enhancement in terms of searching speed and error tolerance, two key techniques have been employed: soundexing and adaptive caching. As soundexing is a hashing system with one soundex corresponding many words, a soundex search may bring about irrelevant results and thus reduce the precision of the search. It is just this limitation that has restricted the application of soundexing techniques in general information systems. Some measures have been investigated in our project to ameliorate this limitation, such as to increase the length of the soundex codes, or to use the Metaphone, a phonetic algorithm to produce variable length keys. For database cache, query normalization is adopted to reduce the redundancies existing in the cache and to increase the hitting rate. While there is still room for further improvement of the developed library catalogue system, the testing results are encouraging and meet the expectations of the project.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Research shows children in an online environment often search by browsing, which relies heavily on recognition and content knowledge, so catalog systems for children must use effective symbols or pictorial representations, which correspond with children's own cognitive schema and level of recognition knowledge. This study was designed to look at the success of young children (ages 5 to 8) in searching 3 online public library catalogs designed for them, and it focused specifically on the pictorial representations and text descriptors used in the systems' browsing hierarchy. The research sought answer whether young children (ages 5 to 8) are really poor searchers because of cognitive development and lack of technology skills or if system design is the major reason for poor search results; i.e., Do current children's online catalog designs function in a manner that is compatible with information seeking by children? Although these results can not be generalized, this study indicates that there was a disconnect between the cognitive abilities of young users and catalog design. The study looked at search success on the 3 catalogs in relation to the catalog characteristics and individual user characteristics and makes 3 significant contributions to the field of library and information science. The first contribution is the modification of an existing model posed by Cooper and O'Connor and modified by Abbas (2002). The second significant contribution is the proposal of a new model, Creel's second best choice (SBC) model, that addresses the cognitive gap and design flaws that impact the choices participants made. The third significant contribution is that this study addresses and fills a gap in the literature.

Du, Toit Elizabeth. "The music editions in the Scott Collection of the Music Library of the University of Stellenbosch before and up to 1800, excluding church music : an annotated catalogue with some notes on printers and publishers". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/58598.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MMus)--Stellenbosch University, 1993.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis can be summarised under the following headings: Unlocking the Scott Collection to the music world The University of Stellenbosch is in the possession of the valuable Scott Collection, as was bought from the estate of Gerrit Wessels, the beneficiary of Commander Michael Scott. The latter emigrated to South Africa because of health reasons, where he played a valuable role in the music circles of Cape Town. Music editions, manuscripts, gramophone records, and writings on music form about 20% of the Scott Collection. Providing music editions with RISM numbers and the international implication thereof The research had to determine whether editions could be listed in the RISM. This international inventory of first and early music editions lists all known and existing editions before and up to the year 1800. There are editions in the Scott Collection for example, which are some of the only few first edition copies in the world, A detailed description of the RISM and its activities are discussed in detail in Chapter 2. Creating an user-friendly catalogue for the US Music Library It was considered a great matter of importance to create an user-friendly catalogue for research purposes. The editions discussed in this thesis are therefore presented in table-form. Introducing further research possibilities Through the survey done on the applicable music editions, it was discovered that 111 editions in the Scott Collections could be listed in the RISM. Seeing that no editions harboured in South Africa are listed in the RISM at present, this matter are naturally of international importance. This also creates opportunities for further research and international publications. Conservation of old paper It became evident during the course of the research survey that the University of Stellenbosch was unaware of the monetary and international historical value of the music editions in the Scott Collection. The collection is in danger of perishing, as it is not preserved according to international standards of conserving old paper. It is also not adequately protected from fire and theft hazards. This matter and some suggestions to improve the situation, were brought under the attention of the university authorities (see Chapter 9).

Yu, Liangzhi. "The effect of information cues in a hypertext system on fiction reading activity of public library readers". Thesis, Loughborough University, 1996. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7315.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of information cues, presented via a hypertext system, on the fiction reading activity of public library readers and the practical implications of the effect. A three-group post-test experimental design was applied for this purpose. The groups were formed from readers in two public libraries near the university by random assignment. The experimental treatments were three versions of a fiction searching and browsing system, differing in the complexity of information cues and the hypertext features. Data for the experiment were gathered by an observation schedule and a self-administered questionnaire and were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis one way analysis of variance and the Mann-Whitney test in SPSSA. The three groups showed significant difference in the amount of their book selection mid borrowing, the extent to which they made use of the searching system and the extent to which they relied on their own experience for book selection. They also differed significantly in the types of book they borrowed. They did not differ significantly, however, in their fiction searching pattern, the conformity of their book selection to their general reading tastes, their subjective feelings of well-being and their cognitive experience during reading. It was concluded that within the typology of information cues proposed in this research, the amount of readers' book selection and borrowing, the types of book they borrowed, their reliance on the system or their own experience for the decision making are significantly influenced by the level of information cues they have been exposed to. However, readers' searching patterns, conformity of book selection to their general taste, and emotional and cognitive experience do not relate significantly to the level of information cues they have been exposed to. It was suggested that detailed categorisation or classification of fiction should be a priority in processing fiction. 'The provision of adequate information cues should have more professional attention in promoting fiction reading, and the policy of fiction services should not be too high-brow.

Fulton, Bruce. "Social Gatekeeping, the Serendipitous Tie and Discovery: Authors Connecting Readers to Books through Social Media Outreach". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/301549.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In 2011, over 1.5 million new book titles were published in the United States, a 400% increase in just five years compared to 2006. In the same time period, the market share for eBooks increased dramatically and now comprises 20% or more of sales from many of the biggest publishing companies. This hyper-abundance of titles in an increasingly heterogeneous market place has made it difficult for consumers to connect to books they might want to read. This is the discovery problem. It is compounded by the continuing decline of traditional gatekeepers and sources of discovery such as mass media reviews and advertising, as well as the decline of traditional bookstores where people often find books through browse. Authors and publishers therefore have turned to social media to spread the word about their titles. Social gatekeeping, an extension of traditional gatekeeping theory, is proposed as the framework for understanding how author participation in social networks initiates a flow of the diffusion of information over the web and other computer mediated communication channels, and through individuals and social networks to potential readers. Serendipitous browse and discovery is a key strategy for readers to find titles of interest, and the serendipitous tie is proposed as a social mechanism through which individuals discover new titles and bring it back to their social networks to share. To explore these concepts, a random sample of new eBook titles published during the first week of April, 2012 was generated and analyzed in three phases. The first phase of research classified books and authors according to facets such as traditional or self-published, use of social media and other factors. The second phase used multiple regression to establish an association between the use of social media by authors and a title's sales and presence on the Web. The third phase reviewed selected titles for new approaches to social media use and evidence of the serendipitous tie. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that author web presence predicts discoverability and sales.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to investigate if three scientific articles concerning the cataloguing of alba amicorum written in the 1980’s and early 1990’s had any influence on the cataloguing of alba amicorum. Another purpose is to investigate the similarities and differences between the catalogues from the late 1980’s and onward. The focus lies on the categories used when cataloguing the alba. Alba amicorum are catalogued on two levels: on a general level, i.e. the album as a whole is catalogued and in addition all the inscriptions in the album are cata-logued separately, the so-called leaf cataloguing. The study uses a comparative method. First the three scientific articles are compared with each other, then nine catalogues of alba amicorum from 1988 and onward, five printed and four online ones, are investigated regarding which categories are used respectively not used in the different catalogues. Then the categories pro-posed in the scientific articles are compared with the ones used in the catalogues. One result of the study is that the differences in the cataloguing on the general level between the printed catalogues are small but that the variation is larger amongst the online ones. The same patterns cannot be seen regarding the leaf cataloguing; here the variation between the catalogues is generally somewhat larger but the most central categories can be found in all catalogues. Another result is that some of the categories in the cata-logues reflect the printed or online form of the catalogue. The study shows that it is hard to define exactly which influence the scientific articles had on the catalogues but that it probably hasn’t been that large. Many of the categories occurring in the catalogues have been used when cataloguing alba amicorum since the early 1900’s. Maybe one could say that the alba themselves are con-stituted in such a way that it is more or less natural which categories should be used when cataloguing them. Abstract (sommario):

The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to study how well the online catalogue of The Music Library of Sweden works when ordinary users are searching for sheet music. The issues studied are: Why do the users fail to find the sheet music they are looking for? Do the users take advantage of the possibilities that the classification codes of the SAB system offer? If not, why?

The source material of the study is 144 comments from a user questionnaire about the online catalogue and, in addition, the search log for one day (513 queries). The comments were sorted into seven groups depending on the type of information need, for example searches for certain instrumentation or genres and problems with spelling. Each analysis ends with suggestions for improvements of the catalogue and its instructions.

The thesis show, according to the Zipf’s principle of least effort, that sheet music searching in the online catalogue is demanding too much effort and knowledge of the users. Searching with SAB classification codes is too complicated which may be the explanation why only 2 percent of the queries in the log are code searches. In 51 of the 76 cases where users failed to find sheet music the queries would have succeeded if the patrons had used classification codes. The SAB system is thus not used as often as it deserves.

The variety and amount of failed queries in the material show that sheet music is difficult to search, for several reasons, for example the complex construction of uniform titles of musical works and that the searchable vocabulary of the online catalogue often differ from the users’ own.

Abstract (sommario):
Ever since digital library catalogues were first introduced in the late sixties and early seventies, there have been two separate metadata repositories for libraries in Sweden. On the one hand there is the Libris catalogue, developed and used mainly by the national library and the university libraries, and on the other hand there is the Burk catalogue for the local public libraries. For almost as long, attempts have been made to create a single, national catalogue for all Swedish libraries, but despite all efforts, including several government bills explicitly stating that this need to happen, the dual catalogue system prevails to this day. This interview study aims to find the opinions of people from different sectors of the library field on this matter. Views on integrated library systems are also debated. There seems to be great consensus among the interviewees that there is, in fact, a problem with lack of coordination of catalogues, but there is less agreement as to what should be done about it, and by whom. The study is analyzed and contextualized utilizing the debate on digital copyright in general and the theories of Tarleton Gillespie in particular. It is concluded that cooperation would be facilitated if libraries made use of open data and open source, which would suggest Libris as metadata repository and open source library systems such as Koha for ILS. Libraries assigned with interlibrary coordination, i.e. the regional and the national libraries, would have to take on a greater responsibility than the local libraries to implement these cooperations. Vendors serving libraries would have to adjust their business models if these proposals were to become reality to offer data under open licenses.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of my master’s thesis has been to examine the situation of the price lists in the National Library of Sweden, in Uppsala University Library and in the Nordiska Museet Library. The starting point was that the institutes have been operating within different institutional practices. These operational differences between the institutes have affected the collecting, the organizing and the accessibility to the information of the price lists. My master‘s thesis is based on Birger Hjørlands theories of domains and knowledge organization. The main sources of the information in the thesis are interviews conducted with informants within these three institutes. The findings of the study show that the main differences in how the institutes have been organizing the price lists, results from the different assignments the institutes have in collecting the material. Based upon the facts that have emerged in the interviews, some general and some specific problem areas have been highlighted. These problem areas have been discussed in the thesis and possible solutions in how to proceed have been presented.

Abstract (sommario):
Where do beginner readers read in the English, mainstream primary school and where could they read? Emma Jane Dyer This thesis explores design for the beginner reader in Year One by evaluating existing spaces in the English primary school and imagining new ones. Three significant gaps identified in the literature of reading, the teaching of reading and school design are addressed: the impact of reading pedagogies, practices and routines on spatial arrangements for beginner readers inside and beyond the classroom; a theoretical understanding of the physical, bodily and sensory experience of the beginner reader; and the design of reading spaces by teaching staff. The study uses a design-oriented research methodology and framework proposed by Fällman. A designed artefact is a required outcome of the research: in this case, a child-sized, semi-enclosed book corner known as a nook. The research was organized in three phases. First, an initial design for the nook was created, based on multi-disciplinary, theoretical research about reading, school design and architecture. Secondly, empirical research using observation, pupil-led tours and interviews was undertaken in seven primary schools to determine the types of spaces where readers read: spaces that were often unsuitable for their needs. Thirdly, as a response to the findings of phases one and two, the nook was reconceived to offer a practical solution to poorly-designed furniture for reading in schools and to provoke further research about the ideal qualities of spaces for the beginner reader. The study demonstrates how the experience of the individual reader is affected by choices made about the national curriculum; by the size of schools and the spaces within them where readers can learn; by the design of classrooms by teachers; and by regulatory standards for teaching and non-teaching spaces. In developing a methodology that can stimulate and facilitate communication between architects, educators, policy-makers and readers, this thesis offers a valuable contribution to the ongoing challenge of improving school design for practitioners and pupils.

In recent years, the quantity of data explodes. Under this circumstance, automated library system records reader’s information in the database. A lot of information is hidden in the data. Data mining is to discover the data and to turn it into information which can be used. Data mining has been used in many areas such as marketing and customer relationship management (CRM). Based on the result of data mining, the owners can change merchandise display and understand customers’ life style and habits in order to increase the volume of sales. To use data mining in libraries allows us to relocate the books and to recommend book lists to readers. In the long term effect, the book circulation can be improved. Many internet services could provide different types of personalization and customization. The technologies allow the service providers to give more specific service by understanding customer behaviors. However, this technology has been neglected in the libraries. Therefore the thesis will focus on readers’ reading history in the university and will try to discover the phenomenon among clusters. The research methodology will be data analysis and data mining, especially clustering analysis. In this thesis, clustering coefficient used to analyze behaviors of reader, and link weight are used to clustering reader into groups. It is convinced that non-exclusive hierarchical cluster research method can also be applied to the internet analysis. For example, it can be used to analyze the effect of different nodes in the internet and to figure out if the node is qualified to be the core node. Moreover, it is also useful to analyze the relationship in the social network.

Abstract (sommario):
On-line catalogs are replacing card catalogs in libraries. This paper reviews research covering the catalog's human-machine interface with emphasis on the difficulties of subject searching. Study 1 replicates previous findings that subject searching, though most often used, is the most problematic type of searching. In Study 2, the organization of the Library of Congress Subject Headings is compared with the knowledge structures of subject experts, subject novices, and librarians. Experts and novices in cognitive psychology differ from each other and from the subject heading structure, but librarians fall in between the two groups. The structures derived are used in Study 3 to predict the success of searching done by subject area novices and experts as well as by librarians. Experts in cognitive psychology find target books more easily than novices, but differences between librarians, subject experts, and subject novices are due to system experience, not subject expertise.

In the past、libraries』 records only record whether books have been returned or not. These records will not be stored after borrowers have returned the books. However、due to the advances of technology in recent years、borrower’s records can now be easily recorded and stored at the same time. These records become larger as time progresses. Nowadays、in order to improve its utility rate、libraries have evolved to actively recommending which books to read. This is done by associating the interests of readers to types of books available. The purpose of this study is to improve the libraries』 utility rate by using Data Mining to find readers』 implied associations from the large database and apply the mining’s result to recommend suitable books for readers accordingly. In this thesis、we according to borrowing database of library of Southern Taiwan University of Technology offered、and regard borrowing the data of readers as the data source mined、every one borrows data includes books and one degree of value of interest that readers for the books. Finally、according to the method put forward、we design and build a recommend system of adaptive books and reader. The result of mining、while planning reader’s personalized service to the library、can offer very useful reference information.

Designing Book Recommendation System for Library Readers based on Ubiquitous Technology Abstract Recently, the environment and knowledge collecting of traditional library is still unable to occupy its important position in human society. As the development of information technology, many traditional libraries lead in the radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to manage the books but it still lacks for providing some services for the readers who are in the library. In this study, researcher tried to find out what are the main requirements for different readers and how to make them effectively use library resources. There are two states of readers as the starting point for system design; one is a kind of the library readers who already know their borrow direction and the other is the readers who don’t know the directions, but they are interested in the book information. Due to these, this study designed some referral services for readers in the library. There are the bookcase recommendation mechanism and relational book searching function to help these two states of readers finding books in the library. The referral services can not only allow readers to achieve effectively self-learning through the system, but break the searching restrictions of traditional library for providing the service of information scanning. As well as the results of experiment and questionnaires, readers could get the books more convenient than traditional searching ways. No matter which states the readers are, they could gain the support to acquire the knowledge more flexible through the services provided by the system. Keywords: radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, bookcase recommendation mechanism, information scanning
