Abstract (sommario):

In this essay I turn to Abraham Cahan’s The Rise of David Levinsky (1917), one of the most popular immigrant novels ever written. I argue that, like other immigrant writers of his generation, Cahan challenged the optimistic version of Americanization of the Progressive Era. First, I examine the context surrounding the publication of the novel, and argue that it stages Cahan’s response to nativism and anti-Semitism, pervasive in print culture at the turn of the century. Then I explore David Levinsky’s fashioning of his Americanized persona; Levinsky’s determination to Americanize leads to a series of unfulfilled, deferred dreams. By performing his desired new identity (to become a “true American”), and by repressing other forms of identification, Cahan’s character opens up a line of critique of Progressive Era constructions of race and ethnicity. I end with a discussion of the immigrant novel as a legitimate genre in 1917 and beyond.

Abstract (sommario):

The article considers the formative features of the formation of the Ukrainian architectural style (modern style) as a phenomenon that has accumulated both properties characteristic of the style of Western European countries, and national traditions of the formation of folk housing or sacred construction. Ukrainian architectural style (modern style) has become an outstanding phenomenon in the development of domestic and European architectural art. It has absorbed many features that have become common to the pan-European architectural heritage, with its features and differences in the varieties of its expression. During the XIX-early XX centuries, church buildings appear in temple architecture, and they were based on the foundations of a "modern" or "realistic" understanding of shaping. Therefore, there is a focus on national culture and traditions, in an innovative sound. Linearity and decorativeness are manifested in stylistic solutions and detailing of decorative elements and inserts. In Galicia, for the first time in 1894, a building was implemented that embodied the above-mentioned features and principles of the formation of the UAS (UAMS). And its creator was the famous architect and industrialist Ivan Levinsky, professor of Lviv Polytechnic.

The main object of the study is residential buildings of Lviv, built by the factory of Ivan Levinsky in the early twentieth century. The analysis was preceded by the archival search and full-scale house measurement surveys. The article gives historical and architectural characteristic for Lviv secession (modern) style in the late XIX – early XX centuries. The research reveals the originality of this phenomenon, its volume and spatial solutions, explores expressive means of the image-plastic system of secession.

O romance Clarissa, de Erico Verissimo, publicado inicialmente em 1933, apresenta ao leitor uma galeria de tipos humanos que representam diversas identidades, concentradas em um só espaço, a pensão da tia Zina. Dentro desse microcosmo social brasileiro, no contexto histórico muito próximo da primeira guerra mundial, do crash da bolsa de valores de Nova York e da Era Vargas, o autor constrói personagens que poderiam ter existido nesse período, que poderiam ter sido seus conhecidos, como o judeu Levinsky e o protestante Gamaliel. Já nesse romance de iniciação, Verissimo investe na técnica do contraponto, recurso recorrente em toda a sua ficção, a fim de levar o seu leitor a uma dialética sobre questões históricas, econômicas, religiosas e afetivas. Este trabalho propõe, portanto, uma análise literária das representações do judeu e do protestante, articulada a essa contraposição.

This paper describes the development of discourse and reflection competencies by three early-age student teachers through repeated children’s book reading (RCBR) in small, heterogeneous groups. The students were enrolled in a four-track, early-education preparation program at Levinsky College of Education in Israel. Research based on a multiple-case-study methodology, focused on an analysis of the students’ interpretation of and reflections on the transcripts of the discourse throughout the three years of their fieldwork. Findings indicate that, over the three years, all three students relaxed their control of the discourse, allowing for more continuous literary discourse among the children. Differences in the developmental trajectories of the three students were manifested in the extent to which literary understanding and distinctive interpretations by the children were emphasized. Over the three years, all three students also developed a genuine concern for the children’s well-being and participation in the group. Analysis of the students’ protocols yielded a tentative formulation of milestones in the development of discourse and reflection competencies through teaching preparation studies.

This paper presents the results of a trip to the Krasnoyarsk Krai in the spring of 2021. The work was carried out in the cities of Dudinka, Norilsk and in the settlements of Ust-Avam, Volochanka, Levinsky Peski of the Taimyr Dolgan-Nenets municipal district of the Krasnoyarsk Krai. The main purpose of the study was to examine the transformation of the food system of the residents of the above-mentioned settlements, as well as to consider the problem of delivery of goods and their transportation to these remote settlements, and the impact of these difficulties on the life and economy of local residents. Environmental changes are also an important factor in the formation of local food resources. Their influence plays one of the main roles in the self-sufficiency of the peninsula residents in food supply. The work was conducted with various categories of the population: people of different ages, men and women, hunters, fishermen, hunters, reindeer breeders, representatives of the administration, employees of trading companies and people employed in the sphere of educational field.

Recalling His Early Days in New York, Abraham Cahan declared that he “felt strongly drawn to the life of the city.” “My heart,” he wrote, “beat to its rhythm” (Marovitz, 17). Anzia Yezierska also remembers New York's Lower East Side at the turn of the century with affection in her autobiographical novel,Bread Givers. When her heroine Sarah Smolinsky is away from Hester Street, she longs for “the crowds sweeping you on like waves of a beating sea. The drive and thrill of doing things faster and faster” (129). For both of these Jewish immigrant writers, the spectacle of New York City embodied hope, liberation, and vitality, yet as they explore the immigrant's exhilarating and exasperating adaptation to urban life in America, they highlight the keen sense of loss on becoming American, on becoming modern. In their vivid depictions of late-19th-century New York life, both Cahan'sThe Rise of David Levinsky(1917) and Yezier-ska'sBread Givers(1925) detail in an especially dramatic fashion a story that had not been explored before in America's urban novel: the Eastern European Jewish immigrant's adaptation to America's consumer culture. Highlighting the role of mass-produced goods and new forms of leisure in constructing a modern, middle-class American identity, both novels examine the tensions and contradictions of immigrant life as a more communal culture of scarcity gives way to an individually oriented culture of material abundance.

We sought to investigate the prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Trichomonas vaginalis in men presenting to a sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic, with special attention to M. genitalium, its occurrence in Israeli patients, coinfections, and risk factors. In a cross-sectional study, 259 men were successively enrolled in the Tel Aviv Levinsky Clinic for STIs between November 2008 and November 2010. There were 118 men with urethritis and 141 high-risk men without symptoms. M. genitalium, C. trachomatis, N. gonorrhoeae, and T. vaginalis were detected using nucleic acid amplification tests. Demographic characteristics and risk factors were documented. The overall prevalence of infection with M. genitalium, C. trachomatis, N. gonorrhoeae, and T. vaginalis, were 6.6%, 12.7%, 23.1%, and 0%, respectively. Prevalences in men with urethritis were 11.9%, 22%, and 49%, for M. genitalium, C. trachomatis, and N. gonorrhoeae, respectively. Prevalences in men without symptoms were 2.1%, 5.0%, and 1.4%, for M. genitalium, C. trachomatis, and N. gonorrhoeae, respectively. Co-infections were found only in symptomatic individuals, in whom 5.9% were infected concomitantly with C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae, and 2.5% had dual infection with M. genitalium and N. gonorrhoeae. N. gonorrhoeae, C. trachomatis, and M. genitalium were significantly more prevalent in patients with urethritis. M. genitalium was significantly more prevalent in the heterosexual population than in homosexual males. To conclude, we have found that M. genitalium infection is associated with urethritis in Israeli men, and more so in the heterosexual population. Testing men for M. genitalium as a cause of non-gonococcal urethritis is warranted, particularly because of its poor response to doxycycline and possible failure of azithromycin.

Societies worldwide are becoming more aware of the educational challenges that come with increased cultural diversity derived from ethnic, linguistic, religious, socioeconomic and educational differences and their intersections. In many countries, teacher education programmes are expected to prepare teachers for this reality and develop their intercultural competences. This instrumental case study is based on a project that aims to initiate mobilizing networks between two music teacher programmes to explore intercultural music teacher education. In this study, we map the intercultural competences that are required of music teacher educators and that are provided in the music education programmes at two higher music education institutions in Israel and Finland. The data consists of 11 focus group interviews with music teacher educators at the Levinsky College of Education in Tel Aviv and the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki, conducted by a multinational research team. The data was analysed abductively, using content analysis as a method. While the interviewed teacher educators could articulate many aspects of their own intercultural competences or the lack of them, the findings indicate that in musical diversity and teaching students from different musical backgrounds the teacher educators found it difficult to explain what kinds of intercultural competences their respective programmes provided for the students. Based on the findings, there is a need for a more holistic understanding of intercultural competences in music teacher education as well as how our institutions produce power. There is also a need for the teacher educators in the programmes to collaborate and discuss among each other in order to create “knowledge communities” and to move towards addressing intercultural issues.

S obzirom na različita povijesna razdoblja, a u svrhu proučavanja interakcije dominantne domaće i imigrantske (to jest istočnoeuropske aškenaske) kulture, navlastito njezine umjetnosti riječi, primijenjena je dijakronijska metoda, čime se upotpunjuje slika složenih odnosa između književno‐autorskih, kulturnih i etničkih identiteta. The original fascination with the medullary circulation of the kidney was driven by the unique structure of vasa recta capillary circulation, which Berliner and colleagues (Berliner, R. W., N. G. Levinsky, D. G. Davidson, and M. Eden. Am. J. Med. 24: 730-744, 1958) demonstrated could provide the economy of countercurrent exchange to concentrate large volumes of blood filtrate and produce small volumes of concentrated urine. We now believe we have found another equally important function of the renal medullary circulation. The data show that it is indeed the forces defined by Starling 100 years ago that are responsible for the pressure-natriuresis mechanisms through the transmission of changes of renal perfusion pressure to the vasa recta circulation. Despite receiving only 5-10% of the total renal blood flow, increases of blood flow to this region of the kidney cause a washout of the medullary urea gradient and a rise of the renal interstitial fluid pressure. These forces reduce tubular reabsorption of sodium and water, leading to a natriuresis and diuresis. Many of Starling's intrinsic chemicals, which he named "hormones," importantly modulate this pressure-natriuresis response by altering both the sensitivity and range of arterial pressure around which these responses occur. The vasculature of the renal medulla is uniquely sensitive to many of these vasoactive agents. Finally, we have found that the renal medullary circulation can play an important role in determining the level of arterial pressure required to achieve long-term fluid and electrolyte homeostasis by establishing the slope and set point of the pressure-natriuresis relationship. Measurable decreases of blood flow to the renal medulla with imperceptible changes of total renal blood flow can lead to the development of hypertension. Many questions remain, and it is now evident that this is a very complex regulatory system. It appears, however, that the medullary blood flow is a potent determinant of both sodium and water excretion and signals changes in blood volume and arterial pressure to the tubules via the physical forces that Professor Starling so clearly defined 100 years ago.

The aim of the research is to evaluate the structural and biological parameters of the spawning stock of the turukhanskaya form of the Siberian vendace Coregonus sardinella (Valenciennes, 1848) from the Yenisei River and the state of the commercial stock of this fish species in the period from 2014 to 2021. Research methods: in the research used the ichthyological material collected in the period from 2014 to 2021 in the lower reaches of the Yenisei River (near the Dudinka town and the village of Levinsky Sands). Processing of ichthyological materials was carried out according to generally accepted methods. The number of spawning herds of Siberian vendace was calculated using a virtual population analysis in Galland’s modification. Instant natural mortality rates by age groups were calculated using the method of L. A. Zykov. Results: According to the control catches, the age of the spawning stock of the turukhanskaya form of Siberian vendace in the Yenisei River was 2+–9+ years. Fish aged 4+ years, which in different years constituted from 47 to 68 % of the spawning stock, dominated in the population. The average long-term age of the spawning population in the study period was 4.2 years. The ratio of females and males in the spawning herd was close to 1:1 on average. Individual absolute fecundity of fishes varied in the range from 1.9 to 12.5 thousand eggs, increasing with increasing age and size of females. The average population fecundity is 2.6–5.3 thousand eggs. The number and biomass of the spawning herd in different years varied from 11.0 to 30.5 thousand individuals and from 630 to 1738 tons, respectively. Practical significance: the obtained results about the dynamics and structure of the spawning stock of the semi-anadromous form of the Siberian vendace from Yenisei River for the period from 2014 to 2021 will be used for prognostic purposes in the preparation of materials substantiating the volumes of the recommended catch in the basin of the Yenisei River. Conclusion: Based on the results of the analysis of the age, size-weight and sex structure, it was shown that the state of stocks of the semi-anadromous turukhanskaya form of the Siberian vendace in the Yenisei River is currently in a satisfactory condition.

According to population biologist Richard Levins, every discipline has a “strategy of model building,” which involves implicit assumptions about epistemic goals and the types of abstractions and modeling approaches used. We will offer suggestions about how to model complex systems based upon a strategy focusing on independence in modeling. While there are many possible and desirable modeling strategies, we will contrast a model-independence-focused strategy with the more common modeling strategy of adding increasing levels of detail to a model. Levins calls the latter approach a ‘brute force’ strategy of modeling, which can encounter problems as it attempts to add increasing details and predictive precision. In contrast, a model-independence-focused strategy, which we call a ‘pluralistic strategy,’ draws off of Levins’s use of an assemblage of multiple, simple and—critically—independent models of ecological systems in order to do predictive and explanatory analysis. We use the example of model analysis of levee failure during Hurricane Katrina to show what a pluralistic strategy looks like in engineering. Depending on one’s strategy, one can deliberately engineer the set of available models in order to have more independent and complementary models that will be more likely to be accurate. We offer advice on ways of making models independent as well as a set of epistemic goals for model development that different models can emphasize.

In Canada, graduates of internal medicine training programs should be proficient in ambulatory medicine and practice. Before determining how to improve education in ambulatory care, a list of desired learning outcomes must be identified and used as the foundation for the design, implementation and evaluation of instructional events. The Delphi technique is a qualitative-research method that uses a series of questionnaires sent to a group of experts with controlled feedback provided by the researchers after each round of questions. A modified Delphi technique was used to determine the competencies required for an ambulatory care curriculum based on the CanMEDS roles. Four groups deemed to be critical stakeholders in residency education were invited to take part in this study: 1. Medical educators and planners, 2. Members of the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine (CSIM), 3. Recent Royal College certificants in internal medicine, 4. Residents currently in core internal medicine residency programs. Panelists were sent questionnaires asking them to rate learning outcomes based on their importance to residency training in ambulatory care. Four hundred and nineteen participants completed the round 1 questionnaire that was comprised of 75 topics identified through a literature search. Using predefined criteria for degree of importance and consensus, 19 items were included in the compendium and 9 were excluded after one round. Forty-two items for which the panel that did not reach consensus, as well as 3 new items suggested by the panel were included in the questionnaire for round 2. Two hundred and forty participants completed the round 2 questionnaire; consensus was reached for each of the 45 items. After two rounds, 21 items were included in the final compendium as very high priority topics (“must be able to”). An additional 26 items were identified as high priority topics (“should be able to”). The overall ratings by each of the four groups were similar and there were no differences between groups that affected the selection of items for the final compendium. To our knowledge this is the first time a Delphi-process has been used to determine the content of an ambulatory care curriculum in internal medicine in Canada. The compendium could potentially be used as the basis to structure training programs in ambulatory care. Barker LR. Dynamic stability is an important mechanical behavior of nanobeams, which has been studied extensively using the Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories, while the Levinson-beam-theory-based dynamic instability analysis of nanobeams has not been investigated yet. Shear deformation is not or is not suitably considered in the Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko theories, so it is very important to introduce the Levinson beam theory in the dynamic stability analysis of nanobeams, which correctly models the combined action of bending and shear in nanobeams with smaller length/height ratios. In this work, the equation of the transverse vibration of a Levinson beam embedded in an elastic foundation is firstly formulated based on the displacement field of Levinson beam theory, and the nonlocal theory is further applied to the Levinson nanobeam. Then, the governing equation of the dynamic stability of the Levinson nanobeam is derived using Bolotin’s method to achieve a generalized eigenvalue problem corresponding to the boundaries of regions of dynamic instability. The principal instability region (PIR) is the most important among all regions, so the boundary of the PIR is focused on in this work to investigate the dynamic stability of the Levinson nanobeam. When the width, length/height ratio, density, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, size scale parameter, and medium stiffness increase by about 1.5 times, the width of the PIR changes by about 19%, −57%, −20%, 65%, 0, −9%, and −11%, respectively. If a smaller critical excitation frequency and narrower width of the PIR correspond to the better performance of dynamic stability, the study shows that the dynamic stability of the Levinson nanobeam embedded in an elastic medium improves under a larger length and density and a smaller width, height, and Young’s modulus, since these factors are related to the natural frequency of the nanobeam which controls the width of the PIR. Additionally, the local model would overestimate the dynamic stability behavior of the Levinson nanobeam.
