Abstract (sommario):
In this essay I turn to Abraham Cahan’s The Rise of David Levinsky (1917), one of the most popular immigrant novels ever written. I argue that, like other immigrant writers of his generation, Cahan challenged the optimistic version of Americanization of the Progressive Era. First, I examine the context surrounding the publication of the novel, and argue that it stages Cahan’s response to nativism and anti-Semitism, pervasive in print culture at the turn of the century. Then I explore David Levinsky’s fashioning of his Americanized persona; Levinsky’s determination to Americanize leads to a series of unfulfilled, deferred dreams. By performing his desired new identity (to become a “true American”), and by repressing other forms of identification, Cahan’s character opens up a line of critique of Progressive Era constructions of race and ethnicity. I end with a discussion of the immigrant novel as a legitimate genre in 1917 and beyond.

The article considers the formative features of the formation of the Ukrainian architectural style (modern style) as a phenomenon that has accumulated both properties characteristic of the style of Western European countries, and national traditions of the formation of folk housing or sacred construction. Ukrainian architectural style (modern style) has become an outstanding phenomenon in the development of domestic and European architectural art. It has absorbed many features that have become common to the pan-European architectural heritage, with its features and differences in the varieties of its expression. During the XIX-early XX centuries, church buildings appear in temple architecture, and they were based on the foundations of a "modern" or "realistic" understanding of shaping. Therefore, there is a focus on national culture and traditions, in an innovative sound. Linearity and decorativeness are manifested in stylistic solutions and detailing of decorative elements and inserts. In Galicia, for the first time in 1894, a building was implemented that embodied the above-mentioned features and principles of the formation of the UAS (UAMS). And its creator was the famous architect and industrialist Ivan Levinsky, professor of Lviv Polytechnic.

Abstract (sommario):
The main object of the study is residential buildings of Lviv, built by the factory of Ivan Levinsky in the early twentieth century. The analysis was preceded by the archival search and full-scale house measurement surveys. The article gives historical and architectural characteristic for Lviv secession (modern) style in the late XIX – early XX centuries. The research reveals the originality of this phenomenon, its volume and spatial solutions, explores expressive means of the image-plastic system of secession.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the present study was to provide validation for Levinson's theory about pets and human personality development. Levinson (1978) proposed that the personality development of individuals who have pets to which they are attached differs from that of those who do not have pets and that pets play an important role in facilitating the development of certain adaptive personality traits. In the present study, specific areas that were addressed included differences in certain personality characteristics between life-long pet owners who were strongly attached to their pets, life-long pet owners who were less strongly attached to their pets, and people who had owned pets for only a limited period of time in their lives. One hundred undergraduates completed the Pet Attitude Scale, the Tennessee Self Concept Scale, the Personality Research Form - Form E, the Hogan Empathy Scale, the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation - Behavior (FIRO-B), and the IPAT Anxiety Scale Questionnaire. No significant differences were found between the three pet owner groups in levels of affiliation with other people, impulse control, nurturance, succorance, capacity for empathy, and anxiety levels. In addition, no significant differences were found between the three pet owner groups in interpersonal behavior characteristics or self-esteem. Concurrent validity was shown between membership in the different pet owner groups and positive attitudes toward pets as measured by the Pet Attitude Scale. As predicted, the most attached life-long pet owners reported more positive attitudes toward pets than the least attached life-long pet owners or the limited-time pet owners.

Uma tarefa importante do processamento de dados sIsmicos é a deconvolução. Ela tem o objetivo de melhorar a resolucão temporal e a coerência espacial dos refetores presentes nas secõe sísmicas. O método de deconvolução de Wiener-Levinson (WL) é o método clássico. Neste método o filtro é causal, também denominado de filtro de fase mínima, e é obtido com o método dos mínimos quadrados, através da solução de um sistema de equações normais. Tal filtro não é eficaz na deconvolução de pulsos de fase mista uma vez que estes não admitem inversa causal. Consequentemente, se o pulso sísmico não é de fase mínima o filtro de WL não produz um bom resultado. Apesar disso ele é normalmente utilizado porque pode ser obtido de forma simples e rápida. Na presente tese mostramos que a deconvolução utilizando o filtro inversão de fase mista, obtido através de operadores all-pass, preserva a equivalência com o espectro de amplitude da deconvolução de WL, e pode extrair a informação de fase do filtro e também do pulso estimado. O novo procedimento utiliza operadores all-pass para mudar a fase do filtro de fase mínima de WL, ou o pulso a ele associado. Testamos duas abordagens para obtenção de filtros inversos ótimos. Na primeira, os operadores all-pass são formados a partir de raízes fictícias do pulso sísmico, distribuídas, no plano complexo, na forma de uma coroa exterior ao círrculo de raio unitário. Na segunda abordagem são utilizadas diretamente as raízes calculadas a partir do filtro de WL. Mostramos que as duas abordagens permitem a obtenção de filtros inversos para a deconvolução de pulsos de fase mista e podem serutilizadas com sucesso no processamento de dados sísmicos. Para solução do problema de otimização, na escolha do filtro inverso ótimo, utilizamos o algoritmo genético, e para quantificar o desempenho dos operadores all-pass e selecionar o filtro inverso ótimo utilizamos a norma varimax do traço deconvolvido. O método de deconvolução de fase mista obtido através de operadores all-pass, foi testado sobre dados sísmicos sintéticos e dados sísmicos reais, utilizando seções síssmicas 2D na Bacia do Jequitinhonha. O novo método pode ser implementado computacionalmente de forma relativamente simples e pode ser utilizado para melhorar a identificação dos eventos sísmicos refletidos e revelar em maior detalhe as feições sismo-estratigráficas e estruturais, de interesse para a exploração e o estudo de reservatórios de hidrocarbonetos.

This proposal was developed due to the need for studies concerning the process of inferentiation, in order to contribute to an improvement of the study of communication through the understanding of the inferential process. The study made possible the understanding of how the neo and post-gricean theories describe the communication and the way in which this description is applied in the communicative dialogues. In addition, it was possible to observe the importance of understanding the historical and philosophical bases, allowing a delineation of the description and the pragmatic objects developed in this work, recognizing the proximity in the semantic-pragmatic relations, highlighting the standard implicatures of Levinson (2000) as responsible for importance of this approach for the understanding of the levels of meaning, verifying how the Neo and Post-Gricean theories occur with regard to generalized conversational inferences by means of a comparison between these pragmatic perspectives and the projection of the theory that best corresponds to the communicative practice to this type of implicature, advancing in the understanding of how the process of implication of the generalized implicatures occurs, understanding that, although the post-gricean approach better predicts the interpretation of this type of implicature, it is necessary to recognize the importance of Neo-Griceans of the scalar implicatures from lexical scales.
A Pragmática, subárea da Linguística a qual se integra este trabalho, estuda a linguagem em uso, dedicando-se à compreensão do significado real, incluindo, pois, conceitos como inferências, contexto e subjetividade. O trabalho aqui desenvolvido é de cunho bibliográfico, construído de maneira a formar uma base teórica consistente acerca das inferências conversacionais generalizadas para, então, apresentar uma meta-análise de artigos selecionados envolvendo essas inferências e teorias apresentadas. O objetivo geral desta dissertação é comparar a abordagem pós e neogriceana de casos de inferências, focando nas implicaturas conversacionais generalizadas, em experimentos selecionados, tendo como objetivos específicos compreender as bases histórias e filosóficas relacionadas à Pragmática, discutir conceitos relevantes para a teoria griceana (Grice, 1957/1975), pós-griceana (Sperber & Wilson, 1995) e neogriceana (Levinson, 2000), observar as propriedades das inferências nas teorias e analisar experimentos pragmáticos referentes às implicaturas conversacionais generalizadas a fim de compreender como ocorre o processo de inferenciação na prática comunicativa e como ocorre a intepretação das implicaturas generalizadas na comunicação humana.Esta proposta foi desenvolvida devido à necessidade de estudos referentes ao processo de inferenciação, a fim de contribuir para uma melhoria do estudo da comunicação por meio da compreensão do processo inferencial. O estudo possibilitou a compreensão da maneira como as teorias neo e pós-griceanas descrevem a comunicação e o modo como tal descrição é aplicada nos diálogos comunicativos. Além disso, foi possível observar a importância da compreensão das bases históricas e filosóficas, permitindo um delineamento da descrição e dos objetos pragmáticos desenvolvidos neste trabalho, reconhecer a proximidade nas relações semântico-pragmáticas, destacando as implicaturas padrões de Levinson (2000) como responsáveis pela importância desta abordagem para o entendimento dos níveis do significado, verificando como ocorrem as teorias neo e pós-griceanas no que se refere a inferências conversacionais generalizadas por meio de comparação entre estas perspectivas pragmáticas e projeção da teoria que melhor corresponde à prática comunicativa a este tipo de implicatura, avançando na compreensão do modo de como ocorre o processo de implicação das implicaturas generalizadas, compreendendo que, apesar de a abordagem pós-griceana melhor predizer o modo como ocorre a interpretação deste tipo de implicatura, é necessário reconhecer a importância dos neogriceanos acerca da significação das implicaturas escalares a partir de escalas lexicais.

This psychobiography on the life of Karen Horney is an exploratory-descriptive study that aims to explore and describe Horney's life structure development according to Daniel Levinson's (1996) theory of adult development. The method of research uses a qualitative single-case research design that studies her life over her entire lifespan and highlights the individual characteristics of Horney in a holistic manner within her socio-historical context. A purposive sampling procedure was used to select Karen Horney as the subject of the research and only published data was analyzed in the research. Multiple sources of data are used to obtain the information in this research, including an autobiography and three biographies written by three different authors. This data is organized according to the temporal sequence of her lifespan and the developmental periods and time frame of Levinson's theory. Horney's life is described and explored to highlight those areas of her life that conform to the developmental theory and those aspects of her life that are not included in the theoretical constructs of Levinson 's theory. By exploring the significant relationships that Horney developed throughout her life with family, friends, work colleagues, community and religious affiliations, and the important issues in her development, this study verifies Levinson's theory by corroborating his conceptualisation of adult development as a process of sequential stages divided into four main eras of development, linked by three periods of transition. A shortcoming of Levinson's theory relates to his omission of self-esteem issues and religious concerns as relevant factors experienced during the era of pre-adulthood and spiritual concerns during the era of late adulthood.

La présente thèse est constituée de deux parties indépendantes. La première partie traite de quelques propriétés spectrales d'opérateurs liés au système de l'élasticité. Plus précisément, nous nous intéressons à l'étude des valeurs propres plongées dans le spectre essentiel de ces opérateurs. La seconde partie concerne l'inversion spectrale. Nous considérons le théorème de Borg-Levinson pour certains opérateurs liés à l'expression différentielle -1/r[(pu')' + qu] sur un intervalle borné (0,h), à savoir l'identification de "oméga" et de deux parmi les trois coefficients p, q et r à partir de la donnée des valeurs propres et des traces des fonctions propres sur le bord de "oméga". Nous donnons quelques résultats concernant des coefficients discontinus. Nous considérons aussi le système de Sturm-Liouville donné par -(Pu')' + Qu = "lambda"Ru où P et R sont des matrices diagonales et Q une matrice symétrique à coefficients dans L"infini"("oméga").

The Pragmatics, a sub-area of Linguistics which integrates this work, studies the language in use, devoting itself to the understanding of the real meaning, including concepts such as inferences, context and subjectivity. The work developed here is a bibliographical one, constructed in such a way as to form a consistent theoretical basis on the generalized conversational inferences, in order to present a meta- analysis of selected articles involving these inferences and theories presented. The general objective of this dissertation is to compare the post and Neo-Gricean approach of cases of inferences, focusing on generalized conversational implicatures, in selected experiments, with specific objectives to understand the histories and philosophical bases related to Pragmatics, to discuss concepts relevant to the Gricean theory (Grice, 1957/1975), Post-Gricean (Sperber & Wilson, 1995) and Neo-Gricean (Levinson, 2000), observe the properties of inferences in theories and analyze pragmatic experiments concerning generalized conversational implicatures in order to understand how the inference process occurs in communicative practice and how the interpretation of generalized implicatures in human communication occurs. O estudo possibilitou a compreens?o da maneira como as teorias neo e p?s-griceanas descrevem a comunica??o e o modo como tal descri??o ? aplicada nos di?logos comunicativos. Al?m disso, foi poss?vel observar a import?ncia da compreens?o das bases hist?ricas e filos?ficas, permitindo um delineamento da descri??o e dos objetos pragm?ticos desenvolvidos neste trabalho, reconhecer a proximidade nas rela??es sem?ntico-pragm?ticas, destacando as implicaturas padr?es de Levinson (2000) como respons?veis pela import?ncia desta abordagem para o entendimento dos n?veis do significado, verificando como ocorrem as teorias neo e p?s-griceanas no que se refere a infer?ncias conversacionais generalizadas por meio de compara??o entre estas perspectivas pragm?ticas e proje??o da teoria que melhor corresponde ? pr?tica comunicativa a este tipo de implicatura, avan?ando na compreens?o do modo de como ocorre o processo de implica??o das implicaturas generalizadas, compreendendo que, apesar de a abordagem p?s-griceana melhor predizer o modo como ocorre a interpreta??o deste tipo de implicatura, ? necess?rio reconhecer a import?ncia dos neogriceanos acerca da significa??o das implicaturas escalares a partir de escalas lexicais.
