Abstract (sommario):

Lasso was considered the greatest composer of his generation with undisputable mastery of all sixteenth-century genres. The dynamism of the late sixteenth century saw the most sophisticated compositions in the continuation of the psalm motet tradition. However, more flexible applications for the psalms in the form of meditations, vernacular translations, and paraphrases opened the door for new and diverse interpretations. This dissertation is a study of Lasso's engagement with established musical traditions and new trends in psalmody. This study unfolds in two parts. First in the discussion of the Latin psalm motet genre and then ensuing with investigation of the German Lied. In each of the genres (1) there is a focus on the definition and classification of terms and older traditions, (2) the examination of the text and the discussion of ways in which the music engages with the prose and poetic forms, and (3) the evaluation of Lasso's interpretation of psalm texts. From negligible German Lieder to expansive motet cycles, the psalms afforded endless polyphonic inspiration and the diversity of which categorically points to the shifts and development of cultural and aesthetic traditions. The use of psalms to reflect devotion and confession amplifies the Catholic Reform implemented at the Bavarian court during Lasso's lifetime. This context along with Lasso's compositional innovation provides an interesting study for the stylistic development of psalm settings in the late sixteenth century.

Abstract (sommario):

The connection between text, music, and performance in the lieder of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries is an integral aspect to fully comprehending the style and performance of the genre. It is also essential in order to understand the full development of the lied in its totality. The era represented a transitional period in musical development, influenced by Enlightenment values of elegance, good taste, simplicity, and naturalness which sought to eradicate the overly decorative “excesses” of the high-Baroque. In this study, emphasis is placed upon the unique development of the lied in the northern German regions by the composers Johann Friedrich Reichardt and Carl Friedrich Zelter and their musical settings of the lyric poetry of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The study also addresses the overall development of the genre as it progressed from the Baroque through Classicism/Neo-Classicism, Sturm und Drang, and into Romanticism exploring the musical settings and performance possibilities both then and now in the context of the various treatises and correspondence between the composers and poet. It seeks to effectively address the notion that these early songs were composed and performed by those versed in the ideal of music being an improvisatory/dramatic vehicle for expressing emotion and textual meaning. In opera, and to a lesser extent other vocal idioms, musico-dramatic excesses occurred in the late Baroque and the cult of the singer reigned. However, the reforms which led to the new aesthetic of naturalness did not suddenly end this improvisatory vocal performance practice. The musical complexity of the lied was gaining in prominence but not yet to the detriment of the priority of the poetic text and its effective rendering.

Abstract (sommario):

Afrikaans: Louis Ernst Brandt wat op 21 Oktober 1873 te Zoeterwoude in Nederland gebore is, het tussen 1904 en 1939 'n groat bydrae tot die Suid-Afrikaanse kerklike en openbare lewe gemaak. Hy het onder besonder bevoorregte omstandighede in Velp groat geword, waar sy vader die amp van burgemeester beklee het. Sy skoolopleiding ontvang hy tuis en aan die Stedelike Gimnasium van Arnhem. Vanaf 1893 tot 1898 studeer hy teologie aan die Universiteit van Utrecht, waar hy in aanraking kom met 'n teologie wat grootliks deur die Nederlandse etiese rigting van die negentiende eeu bepaal is. Prof J J P Valeton jr ( 1848 - 1912) was een van sy vernaamste mentors. Brandt was 'n eminente student wat veral op kulturele en sportgebied uitstaande prestasies gelewer het. Na voltooiing van sy universit~re studie word hy die eerste voltydse sekretaris van die NCSV waarvan hy 'n leidinggewende stigterslid was. Vanaf 1900 tot 1903 is hy predikant van die Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk, gemeente Niezijl. Op 28 Augustus 1902, tree hy in die huwelik met Johanna van Warmelo van Transvaal, 'n gevierde Afrikaner-heldin gedurende die Engelse Oorlog van 1899 - 1902. In 1904 verhuis die gesin na Transvaal waar Brandt agtereenvolgens Nederduitsch in die volgende gemeentes van die Hervormde Kerk van Afrika dien:- Zoutpansberg/Waterberg, Johannesburg, Vereeniging/Heilbron en Kensington/Turffontein. Sy bydrae wat hy gelewer het tot opbou van die Kerk na die ontwrigting van die oorlog en die bewo~ twintiger en dertiger jare wat daarop gevolg het, kan nie te hoog waardeer word nie. Afgesien van talle kerklike kommissies waarop hy gedien het, was hy vir 21 jaar voorsitter van die Algemene Kerkvergadering. Die vernaamste vrugte van sy ewewigtige leierskap was die vestiging van 'n deeglike kerklike infrastruktuur, die teologiese fakul tei t aan UP en sendingwerk onder die heidene. Hy vereenselwig hom volkome met Afrikaner-nasionalisme. Onvermoeid bevorder hy die ideaal op die terrein van die onderwys, kul tuur en ekonomiese opheffing. Hy beywer hom doelbewus vir die verbetering van tussen-kerklike betrekkinge en speel in die verband 'n beduidende rol. Op 23 Junie 1939 sterf hy op 66-jarige ouderdom.
English: Louis Ernst Brandt who was born at Zoeterwoude in the Netherlands on October 21, 1873, made noteworthy contributions between 1904 and 1939 in Church and public life in South Africa. He was brought up under very favourable circumstances in Velp where his father was mayor. He received his schooling at home and at the City Gymnasium of Arnhem. From 1893 to 1898 he studied theology at the University of Utrecht where he carne into contact with a theology which was mainly determined by the Netherlands Ethical direction of the nineteenth century. Prof. J J P Valeton jr (1848 - 1912) was one of his most important mentors. Brandt was an eminent student who produced outstanding performances especially in the cultural and sports areas. After completion of his University studies he became the first full-time secretary of the NCSV - an organisation of which he was a founder member. From 1900 to 1903 he was minister of the Netherlands Reformed Church in the parish of Niezijl. On August 28, 1902 he married Johanna van Warmelo of Transvaal, a famous Afrikaner heroine during the English war of 1899 to 1902. During 1904 the family moved to the Tra~svaal where Brandt consecutively served the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk in the following parishes: Zoutpansberg/Waterberg, Johannesburg, Vereeniging/Heilbron, Kensington/Turffontein. His contribution to the restructure of the church after the disruption of the war and the miserable twenties and thirties which followed, cannot be overestimated. Apart from his service on numerous Church Commissions he was chairman of the General Assembly for 21 years. The most important fruits of his well-balanced leadership were the founding of a thorough church infrastructure,the theological faculty at Pretoria University and mission work amongst the heathen. He identified himself completely with Afrikaner nationalism. Tirelessly he furthered this ideal in the fields of education, culture and economic upliftment. He purposely did his best to improve inter-church relations.

As doenÃas trombÃticas constituem um sÃrio problema na saÃde mundial. Diversas desordens hereditÃrias, que afetam o sistema fisiolÃgico anticoagulante, estÃo atualmente estabelecidas como fatores de risco para a ocorrÃncia do evento trombÃtico. Dentre estes o fator V Leiden Ã o mais freqÃente. A associaÃÃo entre alteraÃÃes no gene do fator V e a ocorrÃncia de eventos trombÃticos desencadeou o desenvolvimento de diversas pesquisas. Neste estudo, 100 pacientes portadores de eventos trombÃticos, atendidos no ambulatÃrio de Hematologia do Centro de Hematologia e Hemoterapia do CearÃ - HEMOCE/SESA/UFC, foram analisados para a detecÃÃo da presenÃa do fator V Leiden. O grupo controle consistiu de 110 voluntÃrios sadios. A freqÃÃncia encontrada na populaÃÃo controle foi de 2,7% (03/110), enquanto que nos pacientes trombofÃlicos foi de 9% (09/100). Destes, 77,8% (07/09) eram do sexo feminino e 22,2% (02/09) do sexo masculino e a cor predominante foi a parda [66,7% (06/09)]. A faixa etÃria mais freqÃente foi entre 26 e 33 anos [33,4% (03/09)]. Do total dos pacientes portadores do fator V Leiden, 88,9% (08/09) apresentaram trombose venosa profunda e 11,1% (01/09) trombose arterial com recorrÃncia do evento trombÃtico de 22,2% (02/09). A correlaÃÃo entre a presenÃa do evento trombÃtico/presenÃa do fator V Leiden e o uso de contraceptivo oral foi de 71,4% (05/07). Das pacientes portadoras e que usaram contraceptivo oral nÃo ocorreu o aborto. A localizaÃÃo do primeiro evento trombÃtico, nos portadores, foi predominantemente nos membros inferiores [88,9% (08/09)] e 11,1% (01/09), nas artÃrias coronÃrias. Em 44,4% (04/09) havia um ou mais fatores de risco/morbidade associado. A freqÃÃncia da mutaÃÃo encontrada no estado do CearÃ mostrou-se inferior aos dados obtidos na regiÃo de Botucatu (SP) - 12% e ao estudo de Benson, em Atlanta (EUA)- 12,4 e ainda menor que os encontrados na regiÃo de Campinas (SP)- 20% e Ã populaÃÃo com ancestral europeu-18%. A diferenÃa entre pacientes trombofÃlicos e populaÃÃo controle nÃo foi estatisticamente significante (p=0,19), mas o risco estimado para o evento trombÃtico foi de 2,46.

As doenças trombóticas constituem um sério problema na saúde mundial. Diversas desordens hereditárias, que afetam o sistema fisiológico anticoagulante, estão atualmente estabelecidas como fatores de risco para a ocorrência do evento trombótico. Dentre estes o fator V Leiden é o mais freqüente. A associação entre alterações no gene do fator V e a ocorrência de eventos trombóticos desencadeou o desenvolvimento de diversas pesquisas. Neste estudo, 100 pacientes portadores de eventos trombóticos, atendidos no ambulatório de Hematologia do Centro de Hematologia e Hemoterapia do Ceará - HEMOCE/SESA/UFC, foram analisados para a detecção da presença do fator V Leiden. O grupo controle consistiu de 110 voluntários sadios. A freqüência encontrada na população controle foi de 2,7% (03/110), enquanto que nos pacientes trombofílicos foi de 9% (09/100). Destes, 77,8% (07/09) eram do sexo feminino e 22,2% (02/09) do sexo masculino e a cor predominante foi a parda [66,7% (06/09)]. A faixa etária mais freqüente foi entre 26 e 33 anos [33,4% (03/09)]. Do total dos pacientes portadores do fator V Leiden, 88,9% (08/09) apresentaram trombose venosa profunda e 11,1% (01/09) trombose arterial com recorrência do evento trombótico de 22,2% (02/09). A correlação entre a presença do evento trombótico/presença do fator V Leiden e o uso de contraceptivo oral foi de 71,4% (05/07). Das pacientes portadoras e que usaram contraceptivo oral não ocorreu o aborto. A localização do primeiro evento trombótico, nos portadores, foi predominantemente nos membros inferiores [88,9% (08/09)] e 11,1% (01/09), nas artérias coronárias. Em 44,4% (04/09) havia um ou mais fatores de risco/morbidade associado. A freqüência da mutação encontrada no estado do Ceará mostrou-se inferior aos dados obtidos na região de Botucatu (SP) - 12% e ao estudo de Benson, em Atlanta (EUA)- 12,4 e ainda menor que os encontrados na região de Campinas (SP)- 20% e à população com ancestral europeu-18%. A diferença entre pacientes trombofílicos e população controle não foi estatisticamente significante (p=0,19), mas o risco estimado para o evento trombótico foi de 2,46.

The history of Leide Moreira, with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and whose eye globe is the single voluntary muscle movement preserved, was used as a metaphor to discuss how inhospitable life conditions may suggest, besides extreme fragility, capacity to modify one‟s life. Although this is about a life experience not belonging exclusively to old age, it may be enhanced in this phase due to proximity to finitude. Reflection on a body beyond the physical body, deconstructing the mind-body dichotomy and, as a result, think old age and longevity without saying no to body changes and human finitude and, through each individual‟s journey, consider the last phase of life, just like all the others, must be vested in both individual and group purposes and meanings, constantly building a personal history together with the hero that lies inside us all.The reflection on the hero‟s journey is what this study is based upon because it emphasizes the fact that crisis need a lonely diving into personal and group unconsciousness which lead to changes, discoveries and, as a consequence, new perception towards the world by seeking a more conciliatory position between consciousness and unconsciousness. A wider horizon and the never seen before, always present throughout life, point out conflicts and inequalities, whose rejuvenated body cannot help to mitigate, on the contrary, it deepens the human abysm between what one wants to be and what one actually is. Fable, myth and poetry itself are means through which human beings trigger their own personal development which are getting more and more neglected nowadays due to reluctance to look beyond rationality. Such a metaphor makes explicit how health does not necessarily mean the elimination of a disease and it shows that there are possibilities to achieve emotional well being and keep on giving meaning to what is there to be lived, despite conflicts inherent to human beings and under any human condition whether in health or in sickness. As for such a destructive phase of life, the whole capability inside it to rebuild or modify should also be considered because a resistant power emerges through it, able to generate a new order of existence. The immovable and unresponsive body, in spite of such important limitations, is still a surface of contact: it can affect and be affected. Leide Moreira‟s journey as a metaphor helps us increase our understanding of what longevity means within the contemporary society and mainly of what the limitations and capacity for reformulation in old age are. Facing the longevity scenery whose experience serves as a guide to events never seen before, it is relevant to consider how far we are preparing ourselves to such extended existence
A história de Leide Moreira, com Esclerose Lateral Amiotrófica e cujo único movimento muscular voluntário preservado é o globo ocular, foi utilizada como metáfora para refletir acerca de como condições inóspitas de vida sugeririam, além de fragilidade extrema, capacidade de reformulação da própria vida. Trata-se de vivência não exclusiva da velhice, mas que pode se potencializar nessa fase pela proximidade com a finitude. Reflexão sobre um corpo para além do físico, desconstruindo a dicotomia corpo-mente e, por meio disso, pensar o envelhecimento e a longevidade sem negar as alterações corporais nem a finitude humana e, pela jornada de cada indivíduo, considerar que a fase última da vida, como todas as demais, precisa ser investida de propósito e significado individual e coletivo, formando incessantemente uma história pessoal em parceria com o herói que nos habita a todos. A reflexão sobre a jornada do herói baseia este estudo justamente por enfatizar que as crises necessitam de um mergulho solitário no inconsciente pessoal e coletivo que promove transformações, descobertas e, consequentemente, novas percepções de mundo a partir da busca de um caminho conciliatório entre consciente e inconsciente. O horizonte mais amplo e o inédito que se faz sempre presente ao longo da vida evidenciam os conflitos e desigualdades, cujo corpo rejuvenescido não ajuda a amenizar, pelo contrário, intensifica o abismo humano entre o que se quer ser e o que se é. A fábula, o mito e a poesia são instrumentos utilizados pelo ser humano como propulsores do seu desenvolvimento pessoal, cada vez mais negligenciados na contemporaneidade por causa da relutância de se enxergar além do racional. Essa metáfora explicita o quanto saúde não significa implicitamente a eliminação da doença, mostrando que há possibilidades apesar dos conflitos inerentes ao ser humano. E em qualquer condição humana de saúde ou doença, de produzir bem-estar emocional e continuar conferindo significado para o que é vivido. Ao considerarmos a faceta destrutiva da vida, é preciso ressaltar toda a capacidade de reconstrução ou de reformulação nela contida porque, por meio dela, emerge um poder que resiste, capaz de gerar nova ordem de existência. O corpo imóvel, inerte. Mas apesar das limitações significativas, continua superfície de contato: afeta e é afetado. A trajetória de Leide Moreira como metáfora ajuda a melhor compreender a condição da longevidade na sociedade contemporânea, principalmente as limitações e capacidade de reformulação na velhice. Considerando o cenário da longevidade, cuja vivência é permeada por acontecimentos inéditos, é relevante pensar até que ponto nos preparamos para uma existência tão alongada

A presente dissertação tem por objetivo discutir a metodologia da Teoria Geral do Direito, cujo objetivo é elucidar a natureza ontológica do Direito, desde a perspectiva de uma Teoria Naturalizada do Direito. Em contraste com a abordagem conceitual predominante na Teoria Geral do Direito, que foca na análise conceitual e no recurso às intuições, alguns teóricos têm endossado uma abordagem empírica que recorre a insights sociológicos e antropológicos para avançar nosso entendimento sobre a natureza do Direito. Entre essas abordagens empíricas, destaca-se a proposta de Brian Leiter de naturalização da teoria jurídica, a partir do naturalismo metodológico de Quine, que favorece a continuidade entre a filosofia e as ciências. A Teoria Naturalizada do Direito baseia-se no recurso aos esquemas conceituais que são pressupostos pelas melhores teorias científicas sobre o comportamento social humano para avançar a discussão sobre a real natureza do Direito. Examinam-se as objeções levantadas contra essa metodologia, bem como os limites da versão de Leiter para a teoria jurídica naturalizada, propondo-se uma versão modificada mais robusta da Teoria Naturalizada do Direito, a qual parte de premissas menos controversas e que fica mais em linha com a metafísica analítica e a ontologia social contemporâneas.
The objective of this study is to discuss the methodology and ontology of general jurisprudence, whose aim is to elucidate the ontological nature of the Law, considering a defense of the naturalized jurisprudence. In opposition to the conceptual approach prevalent in contemporary legal theory, focusing about conceptual analysis and resource to intuitions, some theoreticians have accept empirical approaches that resource to sociological and anthropological insights to advance our understanding about the nature of Law. Among these empirical approaches, there is the defense of the naturalization of the general jurisprudence by Brian Leiter, discussing the Quine’s methodological naturalism whose point is the continuity between philosophy and science. The naturalized jurisprudence is founded on the resource to the conceptual schemas that are presupposed by our best scientific theories about the social human behavior for advancing the discussion about the real nature of Law. The criticism against these naturalized methodology and the limits of the Leiter’s version for naturalized jurisprudence are discussed and, in order for answer and/or account these objections, I propose a modified version of naturalized jurisprudence that it is more robust than the Leiter’s one, because it begins from less controversial premises and it conforms to contemporary analytic metaphysics and social ontology.

Today, as in the past, festivals are organised, usually involving music, dance and the consumption of alcohol. This study discusses variations over time and between different regions, dealing systematically with the preparation of the corpse, places of burial, modes of commemoration, the high costs involved and the influence of Christian missions.
Dieser Band betrachtet die Geschichte von Beerdigungen, ein 'total social phenomenon' im südlichen Ghana. Heute, wie auch in der Vergangenheit, werden Feste organisiert, die normalerweise Musik, Tanz und den Konsum von Alkohol involvieren. Anomaly detection generally refers to algorithmic procedures aimed at identifying relatively rare events in data sets that differ substantially from the majority of the data set to which they belong. In the context of data series generated by sensors mounted on mobile devices for non-destructive inspection and monitoring, anomalies typically identify defects to be detected, therefore defining the main task of this class of devices. In this case, a useful way of operationally defining anomalies is to look at their information content with respect to the background data, which is typically noisy and therefore easily masking the relevant events if unfiltered. In this thesis, a Kullback-Leibler (KL) Divergence filter is proposed to detect signals with relatively high information content, namely anomalies, within data series. The data is generated by using the model of a broad class of proximity sensors that apply to devices commonly used in engineering practice. This includes, for example, sensory devices mounted on mobile robotic devices for the non-destructive inspection of hazardous or other environments that may not be accessible to humans for direct inspection. The raw sensory data generated by this class of sensors is often challenging to analyze due to the prevalence of noise over the signal content that reveals the presence of relevant features, as for example damage in gas pipelines. The proposed filter is built to detect the difference of information content between the data series collected by the sensor and a baseline data series, with the advantage of not requiring the design of a threshold. Moreover, differing from the traditional filters which need the prior knowledge or distribution assumptions about the data, this KL Divergence filter is model free and suitable for all kinds of raw sensory data. Of course, it is also compatible with classical signal distribution assumptions, such as Gaussian approximation, for instance. Also, the robustness and sensitivity of the KL Divergence filter are discussed under different scenarios with various signal to noise ratios of data generated by a simulator reproducing very realistic scenarios and based on models of real sensors provided by manufacturers or widely accepted in the literature.
