Abstract (sommario):
The four great Chinese classics possess a high literary standard and profound thinking, representing four great monuments in the history of Chinese literature. Their translation and dissemination abroad are an important part of the national strategy of "Chinese culture going global", and are incorporated into the major policies of national cultural development. However, previous research on English translations has mostly focused on translation techniques, translator's motivation, comparisons with the original text, etc., with a lack of statistical, analytical, and research from the field of communication. Therefore, this project takes the 25 English translations of Wu Cheng'en's novel "Journey to the West" as the research subject, conducts statistical analysis on the reprinting of different translations, overseas reading volume and reader book reviews, magazine book reviews, academic citation times and world library collection quantities, examines the dissemination of different translations in the English-speaking world, and based on the current situation, combines contemporary scholars' views on the dissemination and translation research of "Journey to the West" in English, lays the foundation for proposing improvement strategies for the national "going global" policy, to promote the breadth and depth of Chinese culture's dissemination in the English-speaking world, supporting the spread of Chinese classical culture and thought beyond China's borders.

Abstract (sommario):
В статье предпринимается попытка установить англоязычные переводные эквиваленты номинативным единицам, маркирующим структуру документов российского законодательства. На материале переводов Конституции РФ, кодексов и федеральных законов автором выстраивается иерархия переводных эквивалентов в английском языке. Делается вывод о допустимости разных переводческих решений в связи с выполнением переводом функции информирования, а не нормативного регулирования. The paper considers the issue of translating legislative texts from Russian into English. Special attention is paid to the structural elements of laws. By analyzing the translations of the Russian Constitution, some Russian codes and federal laws the author presents a hierarchy of English translation equivalents. The translation equivalents may differ since the translation itself performs informative rather than normative function.

Abstract (sommario):
Legal translation is deemed an arduous task, drawing on various lexical and structural choices (Chroma, 2004). Failure to adopt suitable translation strategies and procedures to overcome the challenges of translating legal terminology would undeniably affect the target readers’ ability to understand their translations. Therefore, this mixed-methods corpus-based study examined the English translation of 44 Arabic culture-specific legal terms (CSLTs) used in six Saudi laws (SLs) and focused on identifying the translation strategies and procedures. The CSLTs included in this study were categorized into religious terms, names of institutions, titles of laws, and miscellaneous terms. To analyze the CSLTs’ translation, a parallel corpus including the six SLs and their translations was created using Phrase TMS. To identify the strategies and procedures, Venuti’s (1995) and Mailhac’s (1996) models were utilized. The results revealed that both of Venuti’s strategies were followed, and domestication was adopted more than foreignization. In addition, seven of Mailhac’s procedures were applied, where the procedure most employed is definition, while compensation is the least used.

Abstract (sommario):
The Breton Lays in Middle English is an enigmatic label customarily used to designate eight or nine brief narratives: Sir Orfeo, Sir Degaré, Lay le Freine, “The Franklin's Tale,” Sir Launfal, The Earl of Toulouse, Emaré, and Sir Gowther. The label is awkward because it may seem to suggest that the poems are consistently derived from or inspired by Breton or Old French sources and thus are a sort of stepchildren, little more than translations or, worse, misunderstandings of a multi-media heritage. Most scholars have seen the grouping as traditional and artificial, passed along in uncritical reception, not resting on substantial generic similarities that distinguish the poems from other literary forms. John Finlayson, for instance, concludes, “In fact, considered coldly, shortness and adventure or ordeal would seem to be the only things that can really be isolated as universal characteristics.” Some scholars have accounted for the poems as a set. The distinctions they discuss commonly include the lays' close relation to the conventions of the folk-tale, relationship to provincial audiences, and a growing sophistication of the craft of fiction.

Abstract (sommario):
Summary The numerous translations through which the Commentaries on the Laws of England by William Blackstone – a milestone in the history of the common law – became known in France, and thus contributed for the first time to acquaint French jurists with English law, have been largely neglected by legal historians. The first section of the present contribution introduces the French anglophile visitors to England who, during the second half of the eighteenth century, disseminated the work of William Blackstone and its first translations in France. The biography and work of these first translators require a detailed examination. A second section assesses the influence of these translations, particularly in the legal and political debates on the English trial by jury in the context of revolutionary legislation. A third section considers the later translations of Blackstone’s work during the Napoleonic period and the following years. Finally, a call for further research outlines the impact of that translation literature.

Sessorova, Svetlana Aleksandrovna. "Linguopragmatic aspects of translating Kate DiCamillo’s stylistic dominants from English into Russian". Philology. Issues of Theory and Practice 16, n. 9 (4 settembre 2023): 2912–17. http://dx.doi.org/10.30853/phil20230455.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the study is to identify the main dominants in the individual style of the modern American children’s writer Kate DiCamillo. Kate DiCamillo’s works, despite the fact that their initial target readership is represented by children of primary and secondary school age, are characterised by a deep semantic, aesthetic, didactic and pragmatic load, symbolism, stylistic charge, which is particularly difficult to translate and adapt. In this regard, the paper pays special attention to interpreting the essence of the pragmatic meaning of the features peculiar to the writer’s style, as well as the literary techniques used by her in the process of carrying out a comparative analysis of excerpts from the original works and their translations. The researcher assessed the adequacy of the translator’s application of pragmatically determined translation tactics to preserve the stylistic dominants of the author. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in the fact that it presents a comprehensive translation and linguopragmatic analysis of the key stylistic means used by Kate DiCamillo, which lays the theoretical foundations for the pragmasemantic description of the individual style of the writer of children’s fiction. As a result of the comparative analysis, it was found that Kate DiCamillo’s dominant stylistic techniques are metaphor, comparison, epithet, using which the author conveys the pragmaticon of her linguistic individuality, communicates certain motivational and pragmatic attitudes, influencing the child reader. Cultural filtering, explication and information modification were identified as the key translation strategies.

Abstract (sommario):
Syntactic choices and complexity reduction make translation communicative for the readers. This paper underscores the syntactic choices as well as complexity reduction in Urdu translation of Punjab laws in English. The study focuses on legal communication in a minimalistic perspective. It draws upon the theory of minimalism proposed by Chomsky (1993), along with the three-stage model by Nida and Taber (1969). Data is analyzed by employing Burton’s (2021) clausal analysis. The legal data used for the research comprises Punjab laws in English and their Urdu translation. The findings reveal minimalism as a useful strategy in the translation process for reducing structure complexity and making the translation understandable to laypeople. The study is beneficial to English-Urdu translators since it instructs them on how to make their translations communicative, especially when dealing with legal texts. It is also useful for academics in the field of Translation Studies who are working on minimalist views. Keywords: minimalism, complexity reduction, legal translation, syntactic choices, communication

Abstract (sommario):
The laws of each country have their own unique concepts, and even if the legal system is so similar as that of China and Germany, there are still many legal concepts that cannot completely overlap in connotation. For example, the Rechtsgeschaeft in the German civil law is inconsistent with the civil legal acts in the general principles of China's civil law, which only includes legal legal acts. In recent years, with the increase of legal and cultural exchanges with foreign countries in China, many problems have arisen in legal translation, such as spelling and grammar errors, and errors in the translation of legal terms. As a legal translator, you should have a correct attitude, be conscientious and responsible, and translate high-quality translations.

Abstract (sommario):
This contribution is devoted to an English translation of the Book of Psalms made by John Caryll and David Nairne at the exiled court of James II in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The Psalmes of David, translated from the Vulgat first printed in 1700, received a corrected and revised edition brought out in 1704. Despite the significant place it occupies in the history of translations of the Psalter from the Vulgate into English, it has hardly received any scholarly attention. The paper examines the circumstances in which this translation emerged, looks at its language and compares it with its rival texts, examines its reception, circulation, and sociolinguistic context with a view to determining why the text ceased to be printed and why it has suffered neglect in the literature dealing with biblical translations. The contribution also presents for the first time the text of Psalm 1 from the newly discovered manuscript version of the Psalmes preserved in SCA in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this paper was to do an investigation of adverbials in fiction and non-fiction texts translated into Swedish and English. Adverbials are more flexible regarding position in sentences than other constituents. It has been of interest to find out if there are any remarkable differences in mean-ing due to repositioned adverbials in translation, and the focus has been on adverbials in initial, medial and final position. The results showed that most adverbials retained their position, and also their meaning in translation. There were no noteworthy differences in how adverbials were translated in fiction compared to non-fiction. The preferred position of adverbials was the end position for most types of adverbials in English and Swedish.

Luonua, M. M. (Matti-Mikael). "Transfer of meaning in tourist brochure translations". Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2013. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201303191112.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The topic of this thesis concerns the translation of tourist brochures and how the message of the original text, along with the intended perlocution, are transferred to the translated text. The thesis mainly looks at translations from Finnish to English. There are two exceptions, where translations in Italian, German, Swedish and Russian were also looked at for comparison. The analysed translations were found from ten brochures that were collected from the Tornio and Pello tourist information offices, and two websites that promote locations in Muonio and in Tornio, respectively. The brochures promote locations situated in Lapland except for one, which promotes the food culture of Finland. The theoretical background for the text includes Relevance Theory and the linguistic concepts of locution, illocution, and perlocution. The analysis utilises concepts from translation theory, including functional, cultural and descriptive equivalents, transference, and the covert and overt methods. The goal of the analysis was to see how the aforementioned concepts from translation theory are used in tourist brochure translations to transfer the meaning of the original text to the translated text, and if the translation process has a negative effect on the relevance and intended perlocution, which in turn can lower the attraction of the brochure and the promoted location. The goal also included seeing if translators attempt to avoid this negative effect and if they do, what are the measures that are taken to prevent it. The results of the study reveal that in some cases, the translators do in fact seem to recognise the importance of relevance and the transferral of intended perlocution, thus striving to improve relevance and take measures to aid the transferral of intended perlocution. In other cases, the translators did not seem to hold relevance and perlocution in importance. In these cases the relevance could even be lowered. It seems that the most negative effect on the translation was created when text was omitted in the translation. The results of this study could be used for example to teach translators in the commercial business how relevance and the transferral of intended perlocution are improved and how to avoid the methods that have a negative effect on relevance and transferral of intended perlocution

Jones, Suzanne Barbara. "French imports : English translations of Molière, 1663-1732". Thesis, University of Oxford, 2016. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:8d86ee12-54ab-48b3-9c47-e946e1c7851f.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the first English translations of Molière's works published between 1663 and 1732 by writers that include John Dryden, Edward Ravenscroft, Aphra Behn, and Henry Fielding. It challenges the idea that the translators straightforwardly plagiarized the French plays and instead argues that their work demonstrates engagement with the dramatic impact and satirical drive of the source texts. It asks how far the process of anglicization required careful examination of the plays' initial French national context. The first part of the thesis presents three fundamental angles of interrogation addressing how the translators dealt with the form of the dramatic works according to theoretical and practical principles. It considers translators' responses to conventions of plot formation, translation methods, and prosody. The chapters are underpinned by comparative assessments of contextual theoretical writings in French and English in order to examine the plays in the light of the evolving theatrical tastes and literary practices occasioned by cross-Channel communication. The second part takes an alternative approach to assessing the earliest translations of Molière. Its four chapters are based on close analysis of culturally significant lexical terms which evoke comically contentious social themes. This enquiry charts the changes in translation-choices over the decades covered by the thesis corpus. The themes addressed, however, were relevant throughout the period in both France and England: marital discord caused by anxieties surrounding cuckoldry and gallantry, the problems of zealous religious ostentation, the dubious professional standing of medical practitioners, and bourgeois social pretension. This part assesses how the key terms in translation were chosen to resonate within the new semantic fields in English, a target language which was coming into close contact with new French terms.

Class of 2016 Abstract
Objectives: To verify a set of translated medication labels in consultation with native speakers of non-English languages, specifically for this study: Amharic, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Somali, Spanish, Tigrinya, and Vietnamese. Methods: Native speakers of target languages were recruited from academic and community organizations in the Tucson area. Participants were asked to review a set of translated directions and complete a survey regarding the validity and comprehensibility of the translations. In some cases, a short interview was used to clarify any comments or corrections made by the participants. Results: Surveys were completed by 23 participants, 12 men and 11 women, covering seven languages, with an uneven distribution between languages. Directions in Somali were the least problematic, with relatively strong agreement between respondents. Amharic directions were rated poorly and scored consistently worse than the overall average. Tigrinya had the most variation between respondents compared to other languages. Chinese, Spanish, and Vietnamese all received rather high scores, but analysis is complicated by a small sample size for each. Among responses to the open-ended questions, comments regarding word choice were the most common, for various reasons. Conclusions: We were able to validate some of the provided translations, but found that certain languages posed more problems than others, and these translations would need to undergo further review before they can be reliably used in clinical practice.

Brashi, Abbas S. "Arabic collocations : implications for translations". Thesis, View thesis, 2005. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/20062.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The subject of collocability has been a common concern among linguists, lexicographers, and language pedagogues recently. They find the linguistic aspect of collocation interesting, because words due not exist in isolation from other words in a language. They exist with other words. In every language, the vocabulary consists of single words and multi-word expressions. Collocations are among those multi-word expressions. The aim of this thesis is to characterize collocations in the Arabic language, to devise a classification of the semantic and the distributional patterns of collocations in the Arabic language and to examine the problems encountered in translating English collocations into Arabic. This will require an analysis of the collocational patterns in both English and Arabic, a classification of the translation outcomes, and therefore, types of errors adopted by translators, an indication of how frequent and significant each error is, and an analysis of the causes of each error.

Abstract (sommario):
The works of Zahirad-Din Muhamad Babur enjoy global recognition and have been subject of study for centuries. Distinguished by its national spirit and unique lexicon, Babur's work stands apart from other Central Asian writings. "Baburnama," a rich source of information, has been translated into numerous languages, including notable English translations by John Leyden and William Erskine (1826), Annette Susannah Beveridge (1921), and Wheeler Thackston (1996), each offering comprehensive renditions. This article focuses on a comparative analysis of medical terminology within "Baburnama" across these three translations. It delves into Zahirad-Din Babur's portrayal ofreal events, his expressions of surprise and regret, and the circumstances surrounding individuals' illnesses and deaths. The article examines these aspects by analyzing original text excerpts alongside their corresponding medical terms as found in the English translations.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper aims to study and compare English translations of Ivan Bunin's novella “The Gentleman from San Francisco” (1915). Analysis is based on translations of different time periods: D.G. Lawrence and S.S. Kotelyansky (1917), A. Yarmolinsky (1918), B. Guerney (1923), T. Seltzer (1925), and D. Richards (1987). The works of I. Bunin have always had an appeal to translators, who tried to rise to the challenge of capturing Bunin’s idiosyncrasy in the English language.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose. The goal of the present article is to analyze the original text of the tragedy “Romeo and Juliette” and its translations into the Russian and Ossetian languages to reveal Shakespeare’s metaphors for further analysis of the ways they are translated and possible problems translators might come across while translating. The main methods employed in the research are: the method of contextual analysis, the descriptive-analytical and the contrastive method. Results. The research was based on the theory of Shakespeare’s metaphor introduced by S.M. Mezenin. According to S.M. Mezenin the revealed metaphors were divided into several semantic groups the most numerous of which comprises metaphors with the semantic model “man - nature” that once again proved the idea of Caroline Spurgeon. The analysis of the translations into the Russian and Ossetian languages showed that translators do not always manage to preserve in the translated text unique Shakespeare’s metaphors. Practical implications. The received results can be used in teaching theory and practice of translation, cultural science, comparative lexicology of the Ossetian and Russian languages and the Ossetian and English languages.
