Abstract (sommario):
This article explores the (de)colonisation of the body and body boundaries in contemporary South African speculative fiction, paying particular attention to award-wining author, Lauren Beukes's, second novel, Zoo City (2010). I will apply Lara Cox's (2018:317) argument that 'Haraway's cyborg resembles the liminal view of identity presented by queer theory, which seeks to blur strict divisions between sexual and gender categories, dissolving binary oppositions such as woman/man and heterosexual/homosexual', to my reading of Zoo City. By centring the novel around Zinzi December, a resident of 'Zoo City' (the marginalised underbelly of Johannesburg), and situating the novel in the cradle of humankind, Beukes reacts against South Africa's colonial history and its colonisation of the body by blurring the animal-human boundary and challenging the colonial construct of body binaries. The novel can be read as a decolonial feminist text as it re-writes South Africa's apartheid history and critiques its division, separation and bodily segregation. Furthermore, I explore how fictional bodies are imagined and constructed in the text; I ask what kinds of boundary-breaking bodies predominate; and consider their thematic, narrative, and political significance in the postapartheid imaginary in relation to speculative fiction. I examine how new boundaries (particularly between 'normative' society and 'Zoo City') are formulated. Zoo City pulls into focus Kristeva's (1982) notion of the abject body as a central to its concerns, while also bringing attention to Foucault's (1992) notion of the 'disciplined' body. It foregrounds questions about the formulation and destabilisation of identity, with a particular focus on the construction of female identity. This article builds on the critical literature on the dystopian post-apartheid state by examining Zoo City's depictions of marginalised people and its construction of the body and body boundaries, as well as by extending the examination of representations of the body in speculative fiction.

Abstract (sommario):
This study is premised on the concept of citizenship theory, primarily what is often called cultural citizenship and how this kind of approach can provide insight on narrative development of superhero comic book characters Spider-Man (Peter Parker) and Mary Jane Watson. By positioning the analysis within discourse theory (enforced by representational theory) it relies on the idea of the private and public sphere, the starting point of Lauren Berlant’s notion of citizenship, and how gender roles framed Mary Jane Watson and superhero Spider-Man in the process of gendering national identity. This article draws on two main sets of analyses ‐ the wedding ceremony of Peter and Mary Jane that happened outside comic book panels, at the Shea Stadium in New York in 1987, and Tom DeFalco’s story Maximum Carnage from 1992. These cases are tackled from the position of gender representation with the focus on elaborating how the discourses about gender and citizenship positioned the character of Mary Jane and Spider-Man into the realm of gendered Americanness. The embeddedness of these findings places Mary Jane as a vital part of Spider-Man stories while pointing out specific discursive forms of gendered nationality in American popular superhero narratives: domesticated female identity and active male identity.

Abstract (sommario):
Acknowledging the significance of the COVID-19 pandemic as an exacerbating factor for precarious US communities, this article reads Tony Kushner’s critically acclaimed play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes (1992-95) and Michael Henson’s collection of short stories Maggie Boylan (2015) alongside Susan Sontag (Illness as Metaphor), Jasbir Puar (The Right to Maim) and Lauren Berlant (“Slow Death”). The play and the short story collection represent examples of critiques of a deep-rooted disorder that characterizes the precaritizing American social and political system. From the severely mishandled AIDS crisis in Reagan’s conservative United States to the equally disastrous management of the opioid and meth epidemics in the 21st century, American society and politicians are failing their citizens, a failure reflected in and critiqued by literary texts. Whereas Angels in America is an overtly political drama, in which marginalized people come together to respond to political erasure and violence with imaginative countercultural utopianism, Maggie Boylan traces the gradual decay and corruption of a contemporary American community, functioning as a microcosm of the Unites States as a whole. This society is plagued by several crippling “epidemics” and “crises” that leave bodies broken and communities in tatters. Despite glimmers of hope, Kushner and Henson paint a grim picture of a sickness at the core of American society.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Purpose: To examine the combined and individual associations of postdiagnosis body mass index (BMI), physical activity, diet quality and alcohol consumption with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality (CVDM) and cancer-specific mortality (CSM) among survivors of obesity-related cancers. Methods: American Cancer Society (ACS) Cancer Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort participants diagnosed with one of 13 invasive (but non-metastatic) obesity-related cancers between 1992 and 2003 were followed for mortality until 2018. Postdiagnosis lifestyle exposures were assessed at least one year after cancer diagnosis between 1999 and 2003. A lifestyle score ranging 0-8 was created according to adherence to the American Cancer Society (ACS) 2020 cancer prevention guidelines on BMI, physical activity, diet, and alcohol, with a score of 8 representing optimal behaviors for cancer prevention. Associations of the overall and individual component scores with mortality were estimated using multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models. Results: Among 7,945 cancer survivors, 4,862 died between 1992 and 2018. Higher ACS guideline score was associated with 6-8% lower risk of mortality per 1 point score increase (all-cause: HR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.92-0.95; CVDM: HR:0.92, 95% CI:0.89-0.95; CSM: HR: 0.93, 95% CI 0.90-0.97) among cancer survivors. Individual scores of BMI, physical activity, and diet were inversely associated with overall mortality; however, alcohol score was positively associated with all-cause mortality, only among female survivors. Compared with participants who had low scores both before and after cancer diagnosis, those with high scores after diagnosis had lower risk of all-cause mortality, CVDM, and possibly CSM. Conclusion: Following ACS guidelines on diet and physical activity for cancer prevention after a cancer diagnosis is associated with better survival outcomes among survivors of obesity-related cancers. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background. Higher body mass index (BMI) is associated with poor survival after breast cancer diagnosis. BMI is a heritable trait. A polygenic risk score (PRS) for BMI has been associated with cardiometabolic traits and found to modify weight loss interventions. Whether BMI genetic scores affect survival in women with breast cancer is unknown. Methods. This analysis was conducted in the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition cohort. Women diagnosed with non-metastatic breast cancer between 1992 and 2017 were included in the analysis if they had genotype data. Analyses were restricted to unrelated, postmenopausal women at the time of diagnosis who were of European ancestry (N=3,566). Deaths through 2020 were identified through linkage with the National Death Index. Primary cause of death was based on the International Classification of Disease codes. Pre-diagnosis BMI was self-reported (median 1.3 years from BMI measurement to diagnosis, interquartile range (IQR): 0.6, 1.9). We constructed a PRS using findings from a published meta-analysis of BMI genome wide association studies (GWAS) that included ~700,000 individuals and the PRSice tool.Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) between the PRS and all-cause mortality were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression and Fine and Gray models for cause-specific mortality to account for competing risks. Models were adjusted for age and GWAS-specific statistically significant (P<0.05) principal components for population stratification. Mediation was estimated using the mediation R package. Results. The median age at diagnosis was 71.5 years (IQR: 66.3, 76.8). Most women were overweight (33.5%) or obese (18.4%) and were diagnosed with localized stage (63%) and estrogen receptor positive (65%) breast cancer. During a median follow-up of 14.5 years (IQR: 9.7-19.8), there were 1,825 (51.2%) deaths, including 301 breast cancer and 337 cardiovascular disease (CVD) specific deaths. In multivariable models, a 5 Kg/m2 increase in BMI was associated with increased risks of all-cause mortality (HR=1.09, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.15), breast cancer-specific mortality (HR=1.27, 95% CI: 1.13, 1.42), and CVD-specific mortality (HR=1.25, 95% CI: 1.11, 1.41). The PRS was highly predictive of pre-diagnostic BMI (P<0.001). A 1-standard deviation increase in the PRS was associated with statistically increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR=1.06, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.11). Risks of breast cancer (HR=1.07, 95% CI: 0.96, 1.19) or CVD (HR=1.01, 95% CI: 0.90, 1.12) specific mortality did not reach statistical significance. We estimated that 27% of the PRS and all-cause mortality association was mediated by BMI (95% CI: 12%, 91%; P=0.004). Conclusions. Women with breast cancer predisposed to higher BMI were at increased risk of all-cause mortality. A BMI-related PRS may be a useful tool to identify women with breast cancer in need of additional interventions and/or surveillance. Abstract (sommario):
The globalization of business is making it more important than ever to understand how multinational enterprises (MNEs) can operate more effectively. A major component of this understanding appears to be the field of human resource management, and in particular, the field of international human resource management (Brewster, 1991; Hendry, 1992; Desatnick & Bennett, 1978; Dowling, 1986; Dowling & Schuler, 1990; Evans, 1986; Laurent, 1986; Tung, 1984). The trend over the past few years has been to identify the linkage of human resource management with strategy and offer an understanding of how single country or domestic human resource management can facilitate organizational understanding and effectiveness (Wright and McMhan, 1992). In this article we attempt to extend this line of work into the international arena. We do this by offering a framework of strategic international human resource management (SIHRM). Anchoring SIHRM in the strategic components of MNEs, namely their interunit linkages and internal operations, strategic aspects of international human resource management are described, Using several theoretical bases, numerous propositions are offered. These propositions reflect the single and multiple influence of the strategic components of MNEs and several exogenous and endogenous factors on SIHR. The intention is to offer a framework that can serve both academics and practitioners in furthering our understanding of strategic international human resource management.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Introduction: Currently, populations are identified for cancer screening interventions one cancer type at a time. With new developments in cancer screening, including multi-cancer early detection tests, it is important and timely to understand the overall cancer burden in populations outside those traditionally targeted for single-cancer screenings. Thus, we sought to identify the most important risk factors for developing any invasive cancer, and to calculate associated 5-year absolute risks, with a particular focus on persons under age 50 years. Methods: Two large American Cancer Society cohorts followed prospectively for cancer, the Cancer Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort (CPS-IINC) enrolled from 1992-1993 and Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3) enrolled from 2006-2013, were used to examine a broad range of cancer risk factors. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between potential risk factors and subsequent overall risk of any invasive cancer. The Individualized Coherent Absolute Risk Estimation tool used these HRs to estimate absolute risk in 5-year age groups. Results: 15,226 cancers were identified among 429,991 participants within 5 years of follow-up. Several risk factors including smoking history, obesity, alcohol, family history of cancer, and various chronic medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension) were associated with a higher risk of cancer. Persons above age 50 years, regardless of other risk factors considered, had at least 2% absolute risk per 5 years. Among persons under age 50 years, smoking status was the most important factor differentiating risk. For men under age 50, absolute risk of any cancer did not exceed 2% except for men ages 45-49 years who currently smoke or recently quit (within 30 years). For women under age 50, absolute risk exceeded 2% starting at age 35-39 years for current or recent former smokers, and all women, even long-term nonsmokers, at age 45-49 had over 2% absolute risk. Conclusions: Smoking history is important in differentiating absolute risk of any cancer in adults under age 50 years. More research to understand the extent to which other cancer risk factors influence risk for specific populations aged <50 years should be carried out. Citation Format: Alpa V. Abstract (sommario):
We consider the study of a problematic figure: the criminal or the Nazi executioner in four contemporary novels. The coherence of the corpus retained (La Part de l'autre d'E. Schmitt, Les Bienveillantes de B. Littell, HHhH de L. Binet and La Disparition de Josef Mengele d'O. Guez) is due both to this thematic aspect linked to the representation of a historical reality, but also to the chosen chronological span and the ethical issue that it induces: how can we today «speak» of the executioner, how can we give him the floor, without in any way accrediting the disastrous ideology that he claims to be? To meet this epistemological challenge, we summon the long history by questioning the place and the function of the executioner through the centuries. We then show how the narrative procedures of the novels of his corpus restore the social logics that make possible the emergence of such a figure; far from any psychological complacency for the theme of unfathomable evil, of romantically satanic cruelty or perversity, contemporary writers undertake to deconstruct black legends and mythologies of the curse to highlight the workings of a purely instrumental rationality. The filiation with the theses of Hannah Arendt on the banality of evil and the documented fiction of Robert Merle (Death is my profession, 1952) is in this respect patent. The temporality, the space, the system of the characters converge to place the executioner in an intelligibility that makes understand the facts (including psychic) without justifying them, or reduce them. The last part of the thesis brings the most fundamental piece to the demonstration: against the poorly lit positions of which Charlotte Lacoste is the most eminent representative (Seductions of the executioner. The denial of victims, PUF, 2010), the researcher shows very well how enunciative devices that work a ventriloquist narration, polyphonic (critical narrator, uses of irony) forbid the reader to fall into the trap of Nazi seduction or manipulation. Far from any aestheticization, from any commodification of the horrors of history, the four novels of the corpus constitute effective implementations of a literary anti-seduction

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation is a study of epistemic modalities in spoken Standard Tibetan. They are generally conveyed by a system of verbal endings called 'epistemic endings'. These endings express various degrees of the speaker's certainty of the actuality of his utterance. The dissertation consists of five chapters. The first chapter is theoretic dealing with modality in general, and with the related categories of tense and aspect. I draw on the works of Palmer (1986), Dik (1997) and Gosselin (2005). The second chapter presents the linguistic situation in Tibet and characterizes spoken Standard Tibetan morphologically and syntactically. The third chapter concentrates on the system of epistemic endings analyzing them from a conceptual, functional and syntactic point of view. It is demonstrated that epistemic endings, just like evidential endings, also convey secondary evidential meanings (sensory, factual, egophoric) and that they are normally used in affirmative and negative sentences, and not in interrogative sentences. The fourth chapter is a classification of the various types of epistemic endings. Altogether, 44 epistemic endings are described and their tense-aspect paradigm is built. Finally, the fifth chapter deals with the compatibility of the secondary verbs with epistemic endings. In conclusion, a dozen of types of epistemic endings are commonly used in the spoken language. They differ in the degree of certainty, the tense-aspect, the evidential meaning, the geographic use and the frequency

Abstract (sommario):
The first part of the thesis summarizes the main stages of laurie lee's literary life. In the second part, the autobiographer is seen as a witness of his time, giving accounts of what happened in england and spain between the two world wars. The third part analyses the main themes of his works : childhood as a paradise lost, the young man's wanderings, war as a descent into hell, and finally how he is led to write. Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
From the 1980’s until today, between the initial assessment of its loss and that, more recent, of its re-creation, the world has been adopted by writers as a discontinuous and questionable subject. It is from traces only that the narratives of Marie-Hélène Lafon, Laurent Mauvignier, Pierre Michon and Jean Rouaud are constructed and constituted, while the re-assessment of the relationship to reality and to the story/History is urging them to question the origin of the world in symbolic terms. The understanding of the world is thus filtered in turns through the lens of the investigation or that of the anthropology to closely link the present to the symbols and myths that tell the story of beginnings. Hence, it is by profoundly questioning the arrangements of its narratives and its poetics that contemporary literature commits to recreating the world. Dealing with begetting figures, it positions itself interestingly between obliquity and ubiquity ; it focuses on rethinking place and time to fit the present time, as well as on re-assessing the scope and the arrangements of its implications ; it summons the whole span of the spectrum of elementary symbolism in the service of representations of the creation and of the depiction of ways of being a part of the world ; lastly it reenacts the place of the world in the cosmos, puts words to things, and questions the link between Human and Animal again in order to delineate the shape of a new ethos

Abstract (sommario):
Jeanne Laurent, vice-director in charge of Performing Arts and Music in the Ministry of Education from 1945 to 1952, imposed a series of measures which were to be decisive for the history of public theater in France : the creation of a competition for young companies, subsidies for the création of a first piece, the creation of five dramatic arts centers (Centre Dramatique de l'Est, Comédie de Saint-Etienne, Centre Dramatique de l'Ouest, Grenier de Toulouse et Comédie de Provence), and finally, the nomination of Jean Vilar at the head of the Théâtre National Populaire. The study of the biography of this civil servant, who has become a mythical figure among artists, gives new insights into the question of State intervention in theater from a double perspective : cultural and political. Through the uniqueness of her methods, Jeanne Laurent created a model of public action in theater confirmed by her published and unpublished writings.

This master thesis in creative writing is divided in two parts. The first one, Mécanique de la nuit, gathers dreamlike short stories about the conflict between human and nature. It stages natural catastrophes, wild animals, parasites, etc. The short stories are structured by echos between characters and places. They are told by an omniscient narrator who also talks about dreams in a scientific perspective. The title of the second part is Narration et imagination environnementale dans Les larmes de saint Laurent de Dominique Fortier. It talks about the role of narration in the novel poetic, and then analyses its scope with an ecocritic perspective. It aims to determine the potential contribution of an unusual narrative voice to the renewal of contemporary environmental imagination.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract BARDET–BIEDL SYNDROME Bardet–Biedl syndrome (BBS) (OMIM 209900) is a heterogeneous autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a combination of clinical findings that include obesity, photoreceptor degeneration, polydactyly, hypogenitalism, renal abnormalities, and developmental delay (Ammann, 1970; Alton and McDonald, 1973; Harnett et al., 1988; Green et al., 1989). Clinical characterization and the nomenclature describing this syndrome have evolved over time. In 1866, Laurence and Moon reported a syndrome consisting of mental retardation, retinal degeneration, hypogonadism, ataxia, and spas- tic paraplegia. Nearly six decades later, Bardet (1920) and Biedl (1922) independently described patients with the additional clinical features of polydactyly and obesity (Bardet, 1920; Biedl, 1922). Subsequently, Solis-Cohen and Weiss (1924) reported a single fam- ily that had features that overlapped those described by Laurence and Moon (1866), Bardet (1920), and Biedl (1922), suggesting the name Laurence–Moon–Biedl syndrome (Bardet, 1920; Biedl, 1922; Solis-Cohen, 1924). The disorder was later referred to in the scienti2c and medical literature as Laurence–Moon–-Bardet–Biedl syndrome (McLoughlin and Shanklin, 1967; Klein and Ammann, 1969). The Laurence–Moon–Bardet–Biedl syndrome has in general been viewed as two distinct clinical disorders. BBS is used to refer to patients and families that have the minimum findings of retinopathy, obesity, and polydactyly without spastic paraplegia. Patients affected with Laurence–Moon syndrome do not have polydactyly (Ammann, 1970). Although BBS is considered to be rare, it is the more common of the two syndromes. The incidence in the general population is often cited as being less than 1:100,000 (Klein and Ammann, 1969; Lofterod et al., 1990; Croft et al., 1995; Beales et al., 1997).

Abstract (sommario):
The processes of internationalization and political economic transformation described in the previous chapters help explain the specific character of recent industrial development in Thailand. Capital accumulation in Thailand has been centred heavily on Bangkok and has favoured a stratum of ruling elites who are disproportionately represented in the capital. The Bangkok-centric political economy has been tightly linked—indeed, over a very long period of time—with broader regional and international processes of capital accumulation, and the Thai elites have been successful at using international connections to buttress their social positions and control. Bangkok elites, in particular, have been able to utilize international support to strengthen a project of Bangkok sub-imperialism, which has in turn brought various local elites from outside Bangkok into national and international coalitions. All of this has consequences for the results of economic growth and industrial transformation in Thailand. Until the economic meltdown that began in 1996, Thailand’s GDP growth record was one of the most impressive in the world since World War II, and the country was included by the World Bank among the ‘miracle’ economies of East Asia (World Bank 1993), while being lauded by others as ‘the Fifth Tiger’ (Muscat 1994) and as a new entrant into the ranks of the NICs (Jansen 1991). At the same time, Thailand has become one of the more inegalitarian countries in the world, in terms of income distribution (Medhi 1996; Voravidh 1996) and displays a dramatic spatial skew in the distribution of economic activities. There have also been numerous social and environmental problems connected with industrial development in Thailand, along with various political indignities to the general population (Bello, Cunningham, and Poh 1998)—problems that can be seen alternatively as ‘the strains of success’ (UNIDO 1992) or as symptoms of ‘maldevelopment’ (Suthy 1991). To some extent, each of these images of success and failure correspond to a definite reality of the complex development process, neither of which by itself adequately summarizes the totality. What I focus on in this chapter, however, is not the multifaceted complexity per se but rather the connections between what are regarded as the success and failure stories.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Although perhaps not fully appreciated by all ecologically oriented evolu tionary biologists, there is a deep and necessary inter-relationship between the knowledge of pattern (i.e. phylogeny) and process (i.e. mechanisms) in all studies of comparative biology and especially in those devoted to the analysis of biodiversity and adaptation. This has been eloquently argued in several papers and manuals (Felsenstein 1985; Coddington 1988; Brooks and McLennan 1991; Harvey and Pagel 1991; Hillis and Bull 1991; Stearns 1992; Lauder et al. 1993; Avise 1994) and we do not intend to rephrase all the arguments here. Instead, after briefly summarizing these arguments, we will take the proposal one step further: we will ask whether, in some instances, a phylogenetic pattern cannot in itself be indicative of an underlying evolu tionary process. We will reverse the usual procedure in which one seeks in the phylogeny a framework, a confirmation, or a control to an adaptive hypothesis, and we will focus instead on cases where the evolutionary hypothesis is actually revealed by the pattern. More specifically, we will focus upon the unresolved multifurcations which are found in an increasing number of molecular phylogenetic trees, and we will ask whether these correspond to explosive evolutionary radiations. If such is the case, then the analysis of the phylogenetic pattern will provide a major clue about the generation of biodiversity. The idea of extracting information on tempo and mode of evolution from molecular phylogenies is largely due to Harvey and co-workers (Nee et al. 1992, 1994). These authors have devised powerful methods to infer birth and death rates from the knowledge of the phylogeny of extant species (Harvey et al. 1994). Here, we will limit ourselves to the question of radiations as seen through molecular phylogenies, with special emphasis on the identification and elimination of possible artefacts leading to unresolved branching orders.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Contact and impact problems are routinely encountered in joint biomechanics and computer generated gait analyses. Reduction of the system’s configuration space dimensions by inequality constraints is one of the main difficulty when solving such problems. Much effort has been devoted, especially by the finite element community, to the formulation of contact constraints which are easy to compute (Laursen and Simo, 1993; Heegaard, 1995; Wriggers and Imhof, 1993).

Abstract (sommario):
During March of 1995, hull-ice interaction loads were measured on the hull of the Louis S. St-Laurent (LSSL) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The programme made use of strain gages placed on the bow and shoulder areas of the hull for the LSSL 1994 North Pole voyage. An additional measurement area in the stern was added. The winter of 1995 was a mild winter. Ice thickness during the trials was in the range of 0.4m to 0.5m and air temperatures were generally above zero during the day and -5°C at night. There was marked deterioration of the ice strength over the duration of the trials. The trials were conducted on a non-interference basis. Only very limited dedicated trials were conducted. The data was collected using transient recorders with user-defined threshold triggers. Two video systems were installed, one to document the view looking forward of the vessel and a second looking vertically downwards along the side to record the ice thickness of ice piece broken by the bow and turned on edge. This paper documents the measurement program conducted, including a description of the measurement systems and data processing methods. The final results of measured forces/pressures and their distributions are presented and comparisons made to the 1994 LSSL voyage and several other ships.

Abstract (sommario):
Being one of the most important Romanian composers, thinkers and teachers of the second half of the 20th century, illustrious representative of modern European and Romanian thought with spiritual amplitude, Aurel Stroe has reached — although passed to the eternal ones in 2008 — the anniversary moment when he would have completed 90 years since his birth (May 5, 2022). Member of the academic staff at the Bucharest National University of Music until he left for Germany, Aurel Stroe taught orchestration and composition, but also he held courses in the USA (1985–1986), France (1972), Germany (1986–1994) and in Romania (the famous training courses from Bușteni, from 1992). Awarded the Prize of the Romanian Academy (1974) and the Herder Prize (Vienna, 2002), Aurel Stroe is distinguished by an impressive creation, in all the fields and genres: from opera (The Closed Citadel Trilogy, 1973–1988) to a libretto after Aeschylus: Agamemnon/Orestia I — 1973, Choephorele/Orestia II — 1983, Eumenides/Orestia III — 1988), to symphonic dance and vocal music (the poem for choir and orchestra Monumentum I (1961) — to the lyrics of Nichita Stănescu), from symphonic music (Arcade, Laude I and II, Canto I and II, Ciaccona con alcune licenze, Lyrical Preludes, Mandala with a polyphony by Antonio Lotti) to concert music (Concerto for clarinet and orchestra, Concerto for violin and ensemble of soloists "Capriccios and Ragas", Concerto for saxophone and orchestra "Prairie, Priere", Concerto for accordion and orchestra), from chamber music (piano sonatas) to choral music.

Abstract (sommario):
In March of 1994, the GSFC Stratospheric Ozone Lidar was deployed to the Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC) site at Lauder, NZ. This was in conjunction with a series of NASA ER-2 flights from Christchurch, NZ south to the Antarctic Circle. These flights were organized to study the chemistry of the stratosphere before, during and after the formation of the well-known "ozone hole". Lidar measurements were made at four different time periods corresponding to the times of the ER-2 flights. Lauder is situated nearly along the flight path as the aircraft flew south and so the lidar measurements provide a checkpoint for the ozone, aerosol and temperature instruments on board the aircraft. Whenever the weather permitted, lidar measurements were made as near to dawn, prior to the flight, and as near to sunset, after the flight. Abstract (sommario):
Experiments carried out over the last two decades have shown that it is possible to induce refractive errors in the eyes of young animals by distorting early visual experience. Because of their precocial nature and the fact that they grow and develop rapidly, domestic chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) have been used extensively in this research. Earlier work involved depriving the developing eye of clear form vision, either by suturing the eyelids together or by mounting a translucent occluder over one eye (Lauber and Oishi, 1987; Pickett-Seltner et al., 1988). This treatment invariably leads to an axial elongation of the eye and myopia (near-sightedness). More recently, it has been shown that it is possible to induce both myopia and hyperopia (far-sightedness) in chicks by defocussing the retinal image of the developing eye with convex and concave spectacle lenses (Schaeffel et al., 1988). The range of refractive errors induced was extended through the use of lightweight contact lenses mounted over the treated eye (Irving et al., 1992). Basically, a concave lens simulates the condition of hyperopia, causing a compensatory increase in eye growth with the result that the eye is myopic when the lens is removed. The opposite occurs (ie. a slowing of eye growth) with convex lenses. Experiments have shown that newly hatched chicks will compensate accurately (within 4 to 7 days) to defocus of between -10 and +15 diopters (Irving et al., 1992). Astigmatic refractive states can also be induced with cylindrical defocussing lenses (Irving et al., 1995). The astigmatic effect displays a meridional sensitivity and is due to induced corneal astigmatism, possibly coupled with some lenticular astigmatism. While these studies have addressed changes in refractive state and dimensions of the eye, virtually no attention has been directed to the effects of these changes on the surrounding orbital tissues, notably the bones of the orbit. In the following report, we demonstrate that, in the chick, ocular growth and development is coupled to growth and development of the orbits.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A discretization scheme for contact/impact problems related to the modeling of gears is proposed. The problem is first discretized in time and then a variational formulation for the resulted one step problem is developed. A Finite Element discretization completes the discretization process. The scheme is reinterpretation of the general Simo-Laursen-Chavla algorithm in the contest of rigid body motion superimposed with small elastic deformation; it conserves precisely linear momentum and total energy, and approximately the angular momentum. The discretization method is illustrated with two numerical examples: the standard 1D impact problem for an elastic rod, and a 2D model problem of an elastic wheel bouncing within a constraining box.

Abstract (sommario):
Column amounts of stratospheric NO2 have been measured at Lauder, New Zealand since December 1980; and at Arrival Heights, Antarctic, since September 1982. As the data sets grow their usefulness for trend analysis increases, with the time span covered approaching a complete solar cycle. This paper comments on the significance of trends seen in the data, and emphasizes the important "control" role that is exercised by such ground-based measurements. Refinements in retrieval methods have significantly reduced errors since measurements were first initiated.
