Lasera (light amplification by simulated emission of radiation) pertama kali aditemukan padaa abad ke-20 dan digunakan untuk elektronik dan kepentingan militer dengan berbagaia perkembangan dan inovasia lainnya, laser sendiri pada abada ke-20 disebut (quenta) yaitu bentuk dari suatua energi frekuensi radiasi yang saling berhubungan, laser sendiri merupakan efek pengunaana mekanika kuantumw yang terdirii dari panjanga gelombang yang sama dengan memanfaatkanq radiasi .Tujuan dalam penelitianq ini, digunakan untuk pengujian senjata laser dioda berkekuatan dan berkecepatan tinggi yang terdiri dalam dua kondisiw yaitu kuat teganganr dan kecepatan arus laserr untuk meningkatkane keakuratant dalam menembakt ke sasaran dan sebagai pengganti senjata yang lebih efisien yang menggunakan senjata dalam bentuk cahaya laser. Metode penelitiann ini menggunakann metode triangulasi yaitu dimana menggunakani metode eksperimeni untuk mendapatkans dataa kuantitatifi untuk membuktikani hipotesisi dengan cara mengujii 3 faktor yang dinilaii berpengaruh pada penelitian iini yaituu faktor keakuratan bidikan sasaran, faktor kecepatan cahaya yang dihasilkan dan faktor kekuatan arus laser. Sinar laser ini menghasilkan tegangan dan arus sebesar 50000mW dimana sinar laser tersebut dapat membakar benda yang terkena pancaran laser tersebut hingga membekas atau terbakar hangus dan radiasi dari laser ini hanya memerlukan 3 detik untuk menghanguskan atau membakar benda sasarannya. Laser ini mampu menjangkau jarak 2-5 Km dengan jarak efisien pembakaran kurang dari 10 detik yaitu 6-8 meter.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with the development of diode laser pumped solid state lasers. The earliest work presented enabled 125W peak power, single frequency Q-switched pulses to be obtained from a 100mW diode laser pumped Nd:YAG laser. Using a 500mW diode laser as a pump source for C.W. Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF oscillators an Yb:Er fibre laser was pumped, producing 0.75mW C.W. power at a wavelength of 1.56µm. Acousto-optic mode-locking techniques were used to provide C.W. mode-locked pulse durations in Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF of 55ps and 18ps respectively, at repetition rates of 240MHz. Frequency modulation mode-locking was shown to be a superior technique, giving pulse durations of 11.5ps and 10ps in diode laser pumped Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF oscillators respectively. FM operation of diode laser pumped Nd:YAG lasers was investigated, yielding a maximum FM bandwidth of 70GHz. Spatial hole burning was considered to be an important factor in this result. Using a 1W diode laser to pump a mode-locked and Q-switched Nd:YLF oscillator peak power levels of 70kW were obtained at a wavelength of 1.047µm. Frequency doubling this output in MgO:LiNbO3 with an energy conversion efficiency of 47% enabled other tunable lasers to be pumped using the second harmonic. Firstly, a synchronously pumped rhodamine 6G dye laser is described which is capable of producing 3.2ps mode-locked pulses in a Q-switched envelope with peak powers of around 10kW. Secondly, a synchronously pumped doubly resonant optical parametric oscillator tunable between 983nm and 1119nm is described. Lastly, a Ti:Sapphire laser producing 400ns pulses with peak powers of 3W at a wavelength of 755nm is demonstrated. This oscillator could be wavelength tuned between 746nm and 838nm. A highly efficient method of frequency doubling C.W. mode-locked lasers was developed. Using an external resonant cavity a frequency doubling energy conversion efficiency of 61% to 532nm was achieved, giving 87mW average power in 8.5ps pulses.

Abstract (sommario):
The use of copper vapour lasers for laser ablation in laser materials processing applications is studied. To this purpose, the generation of near diffraction-limited beam quality output from a single medium-scale oscillator is demonstrated via matching the total buffer gas pressure to the specific electrical input power loading and the degree of insulation of the plasma tube. The design and characterisation of a Master-Oscillator Power-Amplifier system based on a smallbore oscillator is also described, focusing on pulse stretching techniques to provide efficient seeding required for producing 20-50 W high beam-quality output for laser materials processing purposes. Various experimental studies on the fundamental processes of laser ablation of metals are presented. The effect of the background gas properties on shock-wave formation in laser generated plasmas is studied using a ballistic pendulum. The experimental findings are found to be accurately described by a modified Sedov-Taylor-Von Neumann theory which accounts for the effect of the piston-mass. The theory is applied to characterise the fluorination process in the shock-wave, in view of oxygen isotope analysis in geochemistry. Atomic emission spectroscopy is shown to provide some measure of the electron temperature and electron density at the plasma core. The experimental results are discussed in view of existing models to describe the extreme Stark-broadening and self-absorption in dense, cool plasmas. A comparative study of the use of femtosecond and nanosecond pulsed lasers for laser ablation of metals is presented to assess the relative importance of thermal diffusion. Measurement of the recoil momentum due to ejection of molten particulates during ablation in vacuum provides insight into the effect of material properties. Diffusion-limited surface texturing of metals via direct transfer of an optical interference patterns is demonstrated.

L'étude de l'allumage d'un mélange gazeux combustible/comburant est d'un intérêt fondamental et d'une importance cruciale dans les moteurs à combustion interne et dans les turbines à gaz. Une nouvelle méthode d'allumage, récemment utilisée, consiste à créer une étincelle par focalisation d'un faisceau laser. 'Objectif du présent travail est d'effectuer une étude paramétrique de ce mode d'allumage pour des mélanges en phases liquides dispersées et gazeuses, ainsi que d'apporter une contribution à la compréhension des phénomènes physiques liés au claquage optique, aussi bien dans l'air que dans les mélanges inflammables. Les plasmas rencontrés sont caractérisés, en termes de concentrations et de températures électroniques, avant d'aborder l'étude paramétrique du claquage dans l'air et de l'allumage des mélanges gazeux et diphasiques inflammables. L'importance de la dynamique induite par l'étincelle laser sur l'évolution de la structure et de la forme du noyau d'allumage est considérée. Le rôle des aberrations, et en particulier de l'aberration sphérique, est soigneusement étudié du point de vue théorique. Des conclusions importantes sur l'interprétation des résultats expérimentaux sont dégagées. La détermination des seuils de claquage, ainsi que l'identification des processus déterminants, sont analysés à la lumière d'un modèle basé sur la détermination de l'évolution de la concentration d'électrons libres dans le volume focal. Finalement, la faisabilité de l'allumage laser à la sortie d'un injecteur prévaporisé, prémélangé en régime pauvre est démontrée.

Recently, lasers operating in the eye-safe wavelength around 1.5 μm have found increasing demand in the laser radar (LIDAR). Raman laser pumped by well established lasers such as Nd:YAG lasers is a favorable candidate with such characteristics at high repetition rate, narrow linewidth, and good beam quality.1 As the Raman conversion medium, a Ba(NO3)2 crystal has attracted much attention because of its high gain and strong mechanical properties.2 Laser output in the eye-safe wavelength region can be obtained with the Ba(NO3)2 crystal either in a first Stokes line pumped by 1.3 μm Nd:YAG laser2, or in a third Stokes line pumped by 1.06 μm Nd:YAG laser3. When the Raman crystal exhibits substantial residual absorption in the pump or Stokes wavelength, these solid-state Raman lasers require some thermal management to scale up to high average power systems such as in LIDAR. Hence, we experimentally studied the thermal characteristics of the Ba(NO3)2 cascade Raman conversion process.

Recent progress is discussed in solid-state lasers including diode-pumped microchip laser arrays with uses for laser radar and atmospheric spectroscopy. The unique characteristics of very short cavity microchip lasers include tunable single frequency output, short pulse operation, and multigigahertz linear frequency modulation. These capabilities, which can exceed those of ordinary solid-state lasers, may be incorporated in 2-D arrays of microchip lasers pumped by diode lasers with the array performing with the characteristics of a single microchip. The 1-D heat flow in microchip laser arrays implies an arbitrary scaling of arrays to high power. Coherent locking of these 2-D arrays is discussed as well as the individual pixel addressability. Comparison of this technology is made with diode laser array pumping of slab geometry solid-state lasers. The relative requirements on the diode pump laser arrays for each of these solid-state laser systems are discussed. Technology of nonlinear frequency conversion is also discussed with emphasis on sum frequency mixing the output from Nd: YAG lasers to produce a high energy source at 589 nm to study the mesospheric sodium layer.

Diode laser sources are inherently continuous-wave devices because their output is peak-power limited. Thus, for average power performance, more effective use of the pump diode lasers is obtained in high-repetition- rate, as opposed to low-repetition-rate, operation; the latter requires more diode to achieve a given average power. I report on a Nd:YAG laser pumped by high repetitionrate, two-dimensional arrays and on the use of a strained layer in InGaAs quantum-well diode lasers as pump sources for solid-state lasers. Two-dimensional rack-and-stack arrays have been limited to relatively low repetition rates and low duty cycles because of difficulties in heat removal; planar geometries cooled by microchannel heat sinks allow higher duty cycles. Average output power of 11 W from a Nd:YAG slab laser has been demonstrated with no evidence of adverse thermal effects in the pump lasers. The development of strain-layer InGaAs diode lasers opens new possibilities for diode-pumped lasers; the main application of these diode lasers has been for pumping Er3+ fiber amplifiers. The use of these diode lasers to pump bulk lasers such as Nd3+, Yb3+, and Er3+ will be discussed.

The use of quasi-two-level laser medium in active mirror configuration seems to be the prospective approach to realisation of the high-power solid-state lasers. This approach was successfully applied to realisation of the diode pumped Yb:YAG laser. The low Stokes shift, thin active layer and longitudinal with respect to laser radiation thermal gradient provide the high specific generation power (3 kW/cm2) with high quality of radiation.

There is considerable interest in high repetition- rate miniature transversely excited(TE) CO2 lasers for their increasing applications in laser radar, ranging, remote-sensing and other industrial fields. Many of these applications require that the lasers work in a high-repetition-rate state reliably and efficiently, and have long sealed-off lifetime. In the past two decades, intensive efforts were made to improve performances of TEA CO2 lasers.[1]-[3] Here we report the design and performance of two kinds of TE CO2 lasers, one of which was bare spark preionized (BSP) and another surface corona preionized (SCP). It is found that the intrinsic efficiency of the later is four times higher than that of the former under the same condition, and the lifetime of the SCP laser is also longer because some dissociation processes of gas involved in the spark preionization were avoided. A BN ceramic structure was employed as the assembly of resonators to improve the stability, which is similiar to that used in the waveguide CO2 lasers suggested by some of the authors of this paper.[4]

Abstract (sommario):
It has recently become possible to manufacture laser media consisting of thin layers that are each thinner than the wavelength of light. The semiconductor versions are multiple-quantum-well lasers, also called surface emitters. Other lasers that can be built with this structure are stoichiometric lasers. It is shown that a ring laser can be made with this structure in a configuration such that the spontaneous (laser) noise is interferometrically subtracted and hence not detected. For applications, such as rotation-sensing of magnetic fields, it is necessary to eliminate the strong coupling between counterpropagating waves owing to the nature (thin films) of the emitter. Solutions to this problem involving either intracavity or extracavity passive elements are presented. Other applications require the laser to be unidirectional. This goal can be achieved by adding a single reflecting layer to the active stack of emitters.
