Abstract (sommario):
Abstract BACKGROUND HDL cell cholesterol efflux capacity has been documented as superior to HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) in predicting cardiovascular disease risk. HDL functions relate to its composition. Compositional assays are easier to perform and standardize than functional tests and are more practical for routine testing. Our goal was to compare measurements of HDL particles by 5 different separation methods. METHODS HDL subfractions were measured in 98 samples using vertical auto profiling (VAP), ion mobility (IM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), native 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE), and pre-β1-ELISA. VAP measured cholesterol in large HDL2 and small HDL3; IM measured particle number directly in large, intermediate, and small HDL particles; NMR measured lipid signals in large, medium, and small HDL; 2D-PAGE measured apolipoprotein (apo) A-I in large (α1), medium (α2), small (α3–4), and pre-β1 HDL particles; and ELISA measured apoA-I in pre-β1-HDL. The data were normalized and compared using Passing–Bablok, Lin concordance, and Bland–Altman plot analyses. RESULTS With decreasing HDL-C concentration, NMR measured a gradually lower percentage of large HDL, compared with IM, VAP, and 2D-PAGE. In the lowest HDL-C tertile, NMR measured 8% of large HDL, compared with IM, 22%; VAP, 20%; and 2D-PAGE, 18%. There was strong discordance between 2D-PAGE and NMR in measuring medium HDL (R2 = 0.356; rc = 0.042) and small HDL (R2 = 0.376; rc = 0.040). The 2D-PAGE assay measured a significantly higher apoA-I concentration in pre-β1-HDL than the pre-β1-ELISA (9.8 vs 1.6 mg/dL; R2 = 0.246; rc = 0.130). CONCLUSIONS NMR agreed poorly with the other methods in measuring large HDL, particularly in low HDL-C individuals. Similarly, there was strong discordance in pre-β1-HDL measurements between the ELISA and 2D-PAGE assays.

Abstract (sommario):
Aiming at unlimited growing XML data stream and large XML document, we present PTList, mining frequent subtrees in XML using paging schema. PTList pages XML data stream, manages cross-page nodes and frequent candidate subtrees growing across page, mines frequent subtrees page-by-page, selects frequent subtree according to the page minimum support, and prunes branches based on the decaying factor. PTList mines XML data stream in the limit of the error of support, improves the memory utilization, and speeds up the mining process.

Abstract (sommario):
The abstraction provided by virtual memory is central to the operation of modern operating systems. Making the most efficient use of the available translation hardware is critical to achieving high performance. The multiple page-size support provided by almost all architectures promises considerable benefits but poses a number of implementation challenges. This thesis presents a minimally-invasive approach to transparent multiple page-size support for Itanium Linux. In particular, it examines the interaction between supporting large pages and Itanium's two inbuilt hardware page-table walkers; one being a virtual linear page-table with limited support for storing different page-size translations and the other a more flexible but higher overhead hash table based translation cache. Compared to a single-page-size kernel, a range of benchmarks show performance improvements when multiple page-sizes are available, generally large working sets that stress the TLB. However, other benchmarks are negatively impacted. Analysis shows that the increased TLB coverage, resulting from the use of large pages, frequently does not reduce TLB miss rates sufficiently to make up for the increased cost of TLB reloads. These results, which are specific to the Itanium architecture, suggest that large-page support for Itanium Linux is best enabled selectively with insight into application behaviour.

Abstract (sommario):
Larger page file sizes were introduced to increase the TLB's reach. Although using large pages might improve performance, it might also introduce performance degradation. With no available tools able to visualize how much large page allocation a program obtains and how a program handles large page mappings, the aim of this thesis is to develop such a program. The final result is a monitoring program, in an alpha-state, built in Python. It starts a program to monitor and uses several Linux kernel commands to gather page file data for the memory mappings of that program. In this thesis I discuss the inner workings of this monitoring program, its additional graph-building module, as well as how it can be used to monitor if and how a program benefits in using large page mappings and how much the frequency of large page promotion affects performance. I found that by using this monitoring program, in conjunction with the Linux command 'time', and the graphs produced by its graph-building module, it was possible to see why some programs benefited by different promotion frequencies. In short, the monitoring program can help users decide if large page support should be enabled, as well as optimized for the use of large pages.

Marath, Sathi. "Large-Scale Web Page Classification". Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10222/13130.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Web page classification is the process of assigning predefined categories to web pages. Empirical evaluations of classifiers such as Support Vector Machines (SVMs), k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), and Naïve Bayes (NB), have shown that these algorithms are effective in classifying small segments of web directories. The effectiveness of these algorithms, however, has not been thoroughly investigated on large-scale web page classification of such popular web directories as Yahoo! and LookSmart. Such web directories have hundreds of thousands of categories, deep hierarchies, spindle category and document distributions over the hierarchies, and skewed category distribution over the documents. These statistical properties indicate class imbalance and rarity within the dataset. In hierarchical datasets similar to web directories, expanding the content of each category using the web pages of the child categories helps to decrease the degree of rarity. This process, however, results in the localized overabundance of positive instances especially in the upper level categories of the hierarchy. The class imbalance, rarity and the localized overabundance of positive instances make applying classification algorithms to web directories very difficult and the problem has not been thoroughly studied. To our knowledge, the maximum number of categories ever previously classified on web taxonomies is 246,279 categories of Yahoo! directory using hierarchical SVMs leading to a Macro-F1 of 12% only. We designed a unified framework for the content based classification of imbalanced hierarchical datasets. The complete Yahoo! web directory of 639,671 categories and 4,140,629 web pages is used to setup the experiments. In a hierarchical dataset, the prior probability distribution of the subcategories indicates the presence or absence of class imbalance, rarity and the overabundance of positive instances within the dataset. Based on the prior probability distribution and associated machine learning issues, we partitioned the subcategories of Yahoo! web directory into five mutually exclusive groups. The effectiveness of different data level, algorithmic and architectural solutions to the associated machine learning issues is explored. Later, the best performing classification technologies for a particular prior probability distribution have been identified and integrated into the Yahoo! Web directory classification model. The methodology is evaluated using a DMOZ subset of 17,217 categories and 130,594 web pages and we statistically proved that the methodology of this research works equally well on large and small dataset. The average classifier performance in terms of macro-averaged F1-Measure achieved in this research for Yahoo! web directory and DMOZ subset is 81.02% and 84.85% respectively.

Abstract (sommario):
According to the explosive growth of mobile phones, mobile Web has been a part of our life. People can access the Web with their mobile phones and obtain information anywhere and anytime. This trend will stimulate the coming of mobile commerce, where people look for and purchase products on the Web whenever they want. Mobile Web is one of the key technologies for mobile commerce. However, since mobile phones have to be handheld, their interface is strictly limited. Users have to browse large-sized Web pages designed for large displays with a small screen and poor input capability of mobile phones. Additionally, considering mobile users browse Web pages in various situations, users’ needs towards presentation functionalities may different depending on their browsing situations. To provide comfortable Web browsing experience under these constraints, we have proposed two systems for mobile phone users. One system provides various presentation functions for Web browsing so that users can select appropriate ones based on their browsing situations. The other system provides functions to navigate users within a Web page so that they can find the information of their interest without getting lost in the page. In this chapter, we briefly introduce designs of these systems and introduce results of user experiments, through which we show that our systems can reduce users’ burden on mobile Web by enabling to select appropriate presentation functions adapted to their situations and by navigating them on a large Web page with the entertaining interface.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, due to the fast growth of the Internet, the services and information it provides are constantly expanding. Madria and Bhowmick (1999) and Baeza-Yates (2003) indicated that most large search engines need to comply to, on average, at least millions of hits daily in order to satisfy the users’ needs for information. Each search engine has its own sorting policy and the keyword format for the query term, but there are some critical problems. The searches may get more or less information. In the former, the user always gets buried in the information. Requiring only a little information, they always select some former items from the large amount of returned information. In the latter, the user always re-queries using another searching keyword to do searching work. The re-query operation also leads to retrieving information in a great amount, which leads to having a large amount of useless information. That is a bad cycle of information retrieval. The similarity Web page retrieval can help avoid browsing the useless information. The similarity Web page retrieval indicates a Web page, and then compares the page with the other Web pages from the searching results of search engines. The similarity Web page retrieval will allow users to save time by not browsing unrelated Web pages and reject non-similar Web pages, rank the similarity order of Web pages and cluster the similarity Web pages into the same classification.

Abstract (sommario):
Over the years the number of Web users has increased dramatically unfortunately leading to the inherent problem of congestion. This can affect each user’s surfing experience. A large percentage of sites use a combination of text and image-heavy design with the use of images contributing heavily to slow-loading sites. Studies have shown that surfers spend a lot of time impatiently waiting for pages to emerge on screen and HCI guidelines indicate 10 seconds as the maximum response time before users lose interest. This chapter presents research into the observed usage of images by academic institutions and the effects on page retrieval times.

Abstract (sommario):
The world has witnessed the blossom of mobile commerce in the past few years. Traditional Web pages are mainly designed for desktop or notebook computers. They usually do not suit the devices well because the pages, especially the large files, cannot be properly, speedily displayed on the microbrowsers due to the limitations of mobile handheld devices: (i) small screen size, (ii) narrow network bandwidth, (iii) low memory capacity, and (iv) limited computing power and resources. Therefore, loading and visualizing large documents on handheld devices become an arduous task. Various methods are created for browsing the mobile Web efficiently and effectively. This chapter investigates some of the methods: (i) page segmentation, (ii) component ranking, and (iii) other ad hoc methods. Though each method employs a different strategy, their goals are the same: conveying the meaning of Web pages by using minimum space. The major problem of the current methods is that it is not easy to find the clear-cut components in a Web page. Other related issues such as mobile handheld devices and microbrowsers will also be discussed in this chapter.

Abstract (sommario):
The exponential growth of data and information artefacts in engineering organisations are one of the biggest limitations for engineers reusing design knowledge. Approaches to support efficient information access are critical for design. In this paper, we demonstrate an exemplar “Super Document” principle using knowledge “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” process. Evidence suggests such recycled representations can reduce the time engineers spend on gathering information from documents by up to 70%. We outline the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” approach using empirical studies with in-service aerospace design engineers. We suggest visual representations better record and communicate information for design engineers, resulting in a time saving of 70% per design in document information seeking. The infographic “Super Document” created uses visual re-representation of large knowledge artefacts – reducing a 100-page design document to a single page. An insight into the next steps for this research concludes this paper.

Abstract (sommario):
Hanne Darboven’s (1941-2009) Opus 17a is a composition for solo double bass that is rarely performed due to the physical and mental challenges involved in its performance. It is one of four opuses from the composers monumental 1008 page Wünschkonzert (1984), and was composed during her period of making “mathematical music” based on mathematical systems where numbers were assigned to certain notes and translated to musical scores. It can be described as large-scale minimalism and it is highly repetitive, but even though the same notes and intervals keep repeating, the patterns slightly change throughout the piece. This is an attempt to unfold the many challenges of both interpreting, preparing and performing this 70 minute long solo piece for double bass consisting of a continuous stream of eight notes. It is largely based on my own experiences of preparing, rehearsing and performing Opus 17a, but also on interviews I have conducted with fellow bass players Robert Black and Tom Peters, who have both made recordings of this piece as well as having performed it live. One is met with few instrumental technical challenges such as fingering, string crossing and bowing when performing Opus 17a, but because of its long duration what one normally would take for granted could possibly prove to be challenging.

McKenna, Patrick, e Mark Evans. Emergency Relief and complex service delivery: Towards better outcomes. Queensland University of Technology, giugno 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5204/rep.eprints.211133.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Emergency Relief (ER) is a Department of Social Services (DSS) funded program, delivered by 197 community organisations (ER Providers) across Australia, to assist people facing a financial crisis with financial/material aid and referrals to other support programs. ER has been playing this important role in Australian communities since 1979. Without ER, more people living in Australia who experience a financial crisis might face further harm such as crippling debt or homelessness. The Emergency Relief National Coordination Group (NCG) was established in April 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to advise the Minister for Families and Social Services on the implementation of ER. To inform its advice to the Minister, the NCG partnered with the Institute for Governance at the University of Canberra to conduct research to understand the issues and challenges faced by ER Providers and Service Users in local contexts across Australia. The research involved a desktop review of the existing literature on ER service provision, a large survey which all Commonwealth ER Providers were invited to participate in (and 122 responses were received), interviews with a purposive sample of 18 ER Providers, and the development of a program logic and theory of change for the Commonwealth ER program to assess progress. The surveys and interviews focussed on ER Provider perceptions of the strengths, weaknesses, future challenges, and areas of improvement for current ER provision. The trend of increasing case complexity, the effectiveness of ER service delivery models in achieving outcomes for Service Users, and the significance of volunteering in the sector were investigated. Separately, an evaluation of the performance of the NCG was conducted and a summary of the evaluation is provided as an appendix to this report. Several themes emerged from the review of the existing literature such as service delivery shortcomings in dealing with case complexity, the effectiveness of case management, and repeat requests for service. Interviews with ER workers and Service Users found that an uplift in workforce capability was required to deal with increasing case complexity, leading to recommendations for more training and service standards. Several service evaluations found that ER delivered with case management led to high Service User satisfaction, played an integral role in transforming the lives of people with complex needs, and lowered repeat requests for service. A large longitudinal quantitative study revealed that more time spent with participants substantially decreased the number of repeat requests for service; and, given that repeat requests for service can be an indicator of entrenched poverty, not accessing further services is likely to suggest improvement. The interviews identified the main strengths of ER to be the rapid response and flexible use of funds to stabilise crisis situations and connect people to other supports through strong local networks. Service Users trusted the system because of these strengths, and ER was often an access point to holistic support. There were three main weaknesses identified. First, funding contracts were too short and did not cover the full costs of the program—in particular, case management for complex cases. Second, many Service Users were dependent on ER which was inconsistent with the definition and intent of the program. Third, there was inconsistency in the level of service received by Service Users in different geographic locations. These weaknesses can be improved upon with a joined-up approach featuring co-design and collaborative governance, leading to the successful commissioning of social services. The survey confirmed that volunteers were significant for ER, making up 92% of all workers and 51% of all hours worked in respondent ER programs. Of the 122 respondents, volunteers amounted to 554 full-time equivalents, a contribution valued at $39.4 million. In total there were 8,316 volunteers working in the 122 respondent ER programs. The sector can support and upskill these volunteers (and employees in addition) by developing scalable training solutions such as online training modules, updating ER service standards, and engaging in collaborative learning arrangements where large and small ER Providers share resources. More engagement with peak bodies such as Volunteering Australia might also assist the sector to improve the focus on volunteer engagement. Integrated services achieve better outcomes for complex ER cases—97% of survey respondents either agreed or strongly agreed this was the case. The research identified the dimensions of service integration most relevant to ER Providers to be case management, referrals, the breadth of services offered internally, co-location with interrelated service providers, an established network of support, workforce capability, and Service User engagement. Providers can individually focus on increasing the level of service integration for their ER program to improve their ability to deal with complex cases, which are clearly on the rise. At the system level, a more joined-up approach can also improve service integration across Australia. The key dimensions of this finding are discussed next in more detail. Case management is key for achieving Service User outcomes for complex cases—89% of survey respondents either agreed or strongly agreed this was the case. Interviewees most frequently said they would provide more case management if they could change their service model. Case management allows for more time spent with the Service User, follow up with referral partners, and a higher level of expertise in service delivery to support complex cases. Of course, it is a costly model and not currently funded for all Service Users through ER. Where case management is not available as part of ER, it might be available through a related service that is part of a network of support. Where possible, ER Providers should facilitate access to case management for Service Users who would benefit. At a system level, ER models with a greater component of case management could be implemented as test cases. Referral systems are also key for achieving Service User outcomes, which is reflected in the ER Program Logic presented on page 31. The survey and interview data show that referrals within an integrated service (internal) or in a service hub (co-located) are most effective. Where this is not possible, warm referrals within a trusted network of support are more effective than cold referrals leading to higher take-up and beneficial Service User outcomes. However, cold referrals are most common, pointing to a weakness in ER referral systems. This is because ER Providers do not operate or co-locate with interrelated services in many cases, nor do they have the case management capacity to provide warm referrals in many other cases. For mental illness support, which interviewees identified as one of the most difficult issues to deal with, ER Providers offer an integrated service only 23% of the time, warm referrals 34% of the time, and cold referrals 43% of the time. A focus on referral systems at the individual ER Provider level, and system level through a joined-up approach, might lead to better outcomes for Service Users. The program logic and theory of change for ER have been documented with input from the research findings and included in Section 4.3 on page 31. These show that ER helps people facing a financial crisis to meet their immediate needs, avoid further harm, and access a path to recovery. The research demonstrates that ER is fundamental to supporting vulnerable people in Australia and should therefore continue to be funded by government.
