Abstract (sommario):
The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a rapidly growing technology that enables transport of voice over data networks such as Ethernet Local Area Networks (LANs). This growth is due to the integration of voice and data traffic over the existing network infrastructure, low cost, and improved network management offered by the technology. This paper reports on the performance of VoIP traffic characteristics in a wired-cum-wireless Ethernet LAN. The effect of increasing the number of VoIP wireless clients, different voice codec schemes, and packet arrival distributions on system performance is investigated. Through various simulation experiments under realistic network scenarios, such as Small Office Home Office (SOHO) and campus networks, this paper provides an insight into the performance of VoIP over Ethernet LANs. Simulation results show that VoIP clients and voice codec schemes have significant effect on system performance. The authors preformed OPNET-based simulations to validate their experiments.

Abstract (sommario):
Local area networks (LANs) are probably the most flexible and adaptable to customizing communications systems. LANs can virtually fit any location/site requirements. They can be tailored for any number of users, any application type and any cost/performance ratio. LANs can work with small (micro computers), medium (mini computers) and large/complex (mainframe) systems. This great flexibility which is due to several factors like, distributed architecture design, software standards, and hardware independence technology make LANs easy to use in a computer laboratory environment. Currently, many hospitality institutions are investigating the feasibility of using LANs in their computer laboratory. However, LANs are still costly, and sometimes difficult to install.

Abstract (sommario):
Internet of Things (IoT) technology makes it possible to monitor and control environmental conditions and electronic devices remotely via the internet. To be used as a monitoring and control tool, the IoT must be able to be operated in realtime. IoT must be able to provide information about an environmental condition and control electronic devices in real time. In this study a remote lighting control system was built using Firebase as a database that is able to turn on/off lights in realtime. The system is built using NodeMCU ESP8266 and android applications so that it is easier to implement on smartphones. The purpose of this study is to perform a performance analysis of firebase as a database that is able to update data in real time via the internet. Testing is done using various types of network connections such as 3G networks, 4G networks, and Local Area Networks (LANs). The test results show that Firebase supports the application of IoT that is capable of updating data in realtime, but the type of network connection used provides a varied delay effect. The average delay generated on 3G networks, 4G networks and LANs is 3.57 seconds, 1.42 seconds and 1.4 seconds.

Abstract (sommario):
Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) have become a major success in telecommunications during the last few years, due to advantages such as mobility, flexibility, and easier maintenance. A device called an access point (AP) acts as a base station in WLAN for connecting a group of users to the network via radio signal. During the planning of such a network an important problem is to determine the optimal number of these devices and their placement/distribution so that coverage, capacity, and physical security are maximised at minimum cost. In this thesis we are using continuous optimisation techniques to optimise the number of APs and their distribution while cost of deployment is reduced and physical security of the network is enhanced. To find the number and placement of APs, we developed a multi-objective functions model based on path losses and power for free space environments. The two functions in the models are combined by using a balancing parameter. Since it is recognised that some of the objectives can be handled one at a time, in another approach, we followed a step-by-step procedure. We start with a novel optimisation model based on path losses for indoor environments including obstacles. Cost of deployment is saved by finding the minimum number of APs ensuring that the path loss at each test point/receiver is below the given maximum path loss. Next, the physical security of the network is enhanced by placing the APs far from places accessible to unauthorised users to reduce the risk of intrusion into the network. This is achieved in the framework of the model by introducing potential unauthorised users in unauthorised areas for whom coverage is minimised. Due to the presence of obstacles in indoor buildings, the path loss function is discontinuous. Therefore, the objective functions are very complicated and most of the existing optimisation algorithms cannot be applied to solve the problem. We use a global optimisation algorithm that is not used by other researchers to solve the same problem. To validate the accuracy of the optimisation model and performance of the numerical methods, we run tests on several indoor buildings and use wide range of WLAN parameters. The results demonstrate the quality of our model and algorithm. Based on the proposed model and algorithm, we developed a software to assist the network designers in planning wireless LANs.

Kriara, Lito. "Holistic and efficient link adaptation for 802.11x wireless LANs". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/15871.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Wireless LANs (WLANs), based on the IEEE 802.11 standard, have become the standard means for indoor wireless connectivity. At the same time, the rising number of smart mobile devices, broadband access speeds, and bandwidth hungry applications (e.g., high definition video streaming) have led to an increase not only of usage but also of demand for higher data-rates. This demand for higher rates is being met with newer IEEE 802.11 standards (e.g., 802.11n/ac) that introduce new features and also increase the different possible settings for each feature. Inherent channel variations and the possible interference conditions when operating in unlicensed spectrum necessitate adaptation of the various medium access control (MAC) and physical (PHY) layer features to ensure high performance. Selecting the values of those features to optimise a criterion such as throughput is the link adaptation problem. Link adaptation, the focus of this thesis, can play a key role in improving the performance of 802.11 WLANs. Increasing number of features and feature setting combinations with newer 802.11 standards is not only making link adaptation even more important but also more challenging. The contributions made in this thesis significantly advance the state of the art on link adaptation for 802.11 WLANs along three dimensions. First, we show that not knowing the exact cause of loss is not an impediment to effective link adaptation. Nevertheless, actions taken in response to losses are more crucial and they ought to be holistic and not solely dependent on the exact cause of loss. Second, we make significant methodological contributions for analysing the impact of multiple parameters on a given criterion, based on comprehensive experimental measurements. The application of this methodology on 802.11n measurements, examining the interaction of the protocols various parameters on performance under varying conditions, has lead to several valuable findings on how to perform efficient link adaptation in a complex WLAN scenario like 802.11n and future 802.11 standards. Adaptation should be holistic, based on the channel quality instead of the interference scenario, and independent of loss differentiation. Based on these insights, lastly and most importantly, we propose two novel holistic link adaptation schemes for legacy 802.11a/b/g and 802.11n WLANs, termed Themis and SampleLite, respectively. Both Themis and SampleLite take a hybrid approach relying on easily accessed channel quality information at the sender side to perform holistic adaptation. The hypothesis that adaptation should be holistic is validated by our results, with both Themis and SampleLite outperforming the current state of the art.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents an assessment of the methods and benefits of adding network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) to certain high-security airgapped isolated local area networks. The proposed network architecture was empirically tested via a series of simulated network attacks on a virtualized network. The results show an improvement of double the chances of an analyst receiving a specific, appropriately-severe alert when NIDS is implemented alongside host-based measures when compared to host-based measures alone. Further, the inclusion of NIDS increased the likelihood of the analyst receiving a high-severity alert in response to the simulated attack attempt by four times when compared to host-based measures alone. Despite a tendency to think that networks without cross-boundary traffic do not require boundary defense measures, such measures can significantly improve the efficiency of incident response operations on such networks.

Abstract (sommario):
Fiber optic local area networking (FOLAN) is rapidly becoming a reality. It has gone from an engineering curiosity to a commercially available product within the last few years thanks to the emerging standards and general acceptance of fiber optics. FOLANs are ideal for high speed data transport. They eliminate ground loop problems; the media does not require shielding and, in general, requires less space and is lighter weight. Fiber optic media has a much higher bandwidth than equivalent wire systems which will allow for future expansion without requiring a cable plant change. The question of what is presently available and how a typical system is implemented will be answered. There are several FOLANs commercially available or under development at this time. Generically most of them fall in one of these categories: token rings, token buses, and continuous sense multiple access/collision detect (CSMA/CD) networks. Perhaps the most well-known token ring is the fiber distributed data interface (FDDI). One implementation of the token bus is the manufacture automated protocol (MAP). The most popular implementation of CSMA/CD is Ethernet. A brief description of each of the protocols, connection schemes, and available hardware used to implement the networks will be given. The FDDI network will be used to illustrate a typical network realization. The last portion of the presentation will discuss what the future has in store for high speed fiber networks. What are some of the emerging technologies? What is SONET, HPPI, and high-speed channel?

Abstract (sommario):
With the recent developments in tunable lasers and filters, star couplers, wavelength-routing multiplexers, low-noise optical amplifiers, and even wavelength changers, optical WDM technology is now emerging as the most flexible and efficient technique for accessing the vast bandwidth of the optical fiber. It permits a large number of independent users to communicate over the same network at a staggering overall throughput without a significant degree of coordination. When envisioning the use of this technology to construct an optical network of national or international extent, it is desirable to keep the signal path all optical from source to destination to offer the network users the flexibility of using virtually arbitrary signaling formats and modulation rates. To realize this goal efficiently it is essential that the network architecture be hierarchical, e.g., local area networks (LANs) interconnected by metropolitan area networks (MANs), which, in turn, are interconnected by a wide area network (WAN) of possible global extent. The subnetworks in such a hierarchy should be decoupled in such a way as to allow optical frequency reuse. Thus, optical frequencies used for local communications within a given LAN could be reused within any other LAN without interference. This increases the overall network capacity, conserves signal power, and simplifies network management and fault isolation.

Leis, Sherry. Network scale fire atlas supports land management in national parks. A cura di Tani Hubbard. National Park Service, novembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2295133.

Abstract (sommario):
Long-term vegetation monitoring allows land managers to make treatment decisions based on data. Fire management is a commonly used approach to managing grasslands, but fire history in grasslands is challenging to record because of spatial and temporal scales and rapid ecosystem recovery. We built a seven-park fire occurrence record (fire atlas) using a geodatabase tool. Multiple sources for fire perimeters were vetted using a verification and editing process. The fire occurrence geodatabase was then used as the basis for an analysis that used buffering around monitoring site locations to determine burned status through time. The resulting products were beneficial for communicating with managers, administrators, and fire staff. Planning and education projects were also important uses of the information. Future efforts will focus on improving attribute consistency and relating vegetation trends to fire occurrence.

Riley, Brad. Scaling up: Renewable energy on Aboriginal lands in north west Australia. Nulungu Research Institute, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32613/nrp/2021.6.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines renewable energy developments on Aboriginal lands in North-West Western Australia at three scales. It first examines the literature developing in relation to large scale renewable energy projects and the Native Title Act (1993)Cwlth. It then looks to the history of small community scale standalone systems. Finally, it examines locally adapted approaches to benefit sharing in remote utility owned networks. In doing so this paper foregrounds the importance of Aboriginal agency. It identifies Aboriginal decision making and economic inclusion as being key to policy and project development in the 'scaling up' of a transition to renewable energy resources in the North-West.
