Abstract (sommario):
Sources of fecal contamination in Laguna Lake, Philippines, were identified using a library-independent microbial source tracking method targeting host-associated Bacteroides 16S rDNA-based markers. Water samples from nine lake stations were assessed for the presence of the fecal markers HF183 (human), BoBac (cattle), Pig-2-Bac (swine), and DuckBac (duck) from August 2019 to January 2020. HF183 (average concentration = 1.91 log10 copies/mL) was the most frequently detected, while Pig-2-Bac (average concentration = 2.47 log10 copies/mL) was the most abundant. The detected marker concentrations in different stations corresponded to the land use patterns around the lake. Generally, all marker concentrations were higher during the wet season (August–October), suggesting the effect of rainfall-associated factors on the movement and retention of markers from sources. There was a significant association (ρ = 0.45; p < 0.001) between phosphate and the concentration of HF183, suggesting domestic sewage-derived pollution. The markers had acceptable sensitivity and specificity, i.e., HF183 (S = 0.88; R = 0.99), Pig-2-Bac (S = 1.00; R = 1.00), and DuckBac (S = 0.94; R = 1.00), and therefore may be used for the continuous monitoring of fecal pollution in the lake and in designing interventions to improve the quality of the lake water.

Abstract (sommario):

Indonesia always been active in carrying out development activities such as public development. The government has a duty to make Development for the public for the welfare of the people. The problem of land acquisition is considered vulnerable handling because it covers the lives of people. Currently, it is considered very difficult to carry out development for the public interest on state-owned land. The purpose of this research is to find out that the taking of rights to land due to the widening by the government of private land rights to realize national development have laws underlie it. The government compensation for freehold land taken from the community with an agreement that has been deliberated beforehand. The process of providing compensation must be balanced so that the owners of land rights are not harmed. In this research, the library research method is used by examining through books, journals, laws, and other written documents related to the issues to be discussed. The results showed that the process of taking over land rights due to widening by the government was based on Law Number 2 of 2012. The compensation provided is also
further explained in Presidential Regulation No. 65 of 2006.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Fecal contamination is one of the factors causing deterioration of Laguna Lake. Although total coliform levels are constantly monitored, no protocol is in place to identify their origin. This can be addressed using the library-dependent microbial source tracking (MST) method, repetitive element sequence-based polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR) fingerprinting. Serving as a prerequisite in developing the host-origin library, we assessed the discriminatory power of three fingerprinting primers, namely BOX-A1R, (GTG)5, and REP1R-1/2-1. Fingerprint profiles were obtained from 290 thermotolerant Escherichia coli isolated from sewage waters and fecal samples of cows, chickens, and pigs from regions surrounding the lake. Band patterns were converted into binary profiles and were classified using the discriminant analysis of principal components. Results show that: (1) REP1R-1/2-1 has a low genotyping success rate and information content; (2) increasing the library size led to more precise estimates of library accuracy; and (3) combining fingerprint profiles from BOX-A1R and (GTG)5 revealed the best discrimination (average rate of correct classification (ARCC) = 0.82 ± 0.06) in a two-way categorical split; while (4) no significant difference was found between the combined profiles (0.74 ± 0.15) and using solely BOX-A1R (0.76 ± 0.09) in a four-way split. Testing the library by identifying known isolates from a separate dataset has shown that a two-way classification performed better (ARCC = 0.66) than a four-way split (ARCC = 0.29). The library can be developed further by adding more representative isolates per host source. Nevertheless, our results have shown that combining profiles from BOX-A1R and (GTG)5 is recommended in developing the MST library for Laguna Lake.

Abstract (sommario):
Since medical centers, from the perspective of civil defense, are considered as centers of critical urban land, therefore, it is essential the criteria and defensive mechanisms to comply in design. One of these strategies would be taking advantage of the vegetation in a hospital. From this perspective, the use of vegetation in the hospital needs to scientific and expertise comments by the expert in the green space who is familiar with knowledge of passive defense. In this study, it is tried the principles of architectural green spaces design of medical centers to discuss from an architectural defensive approach and passive defense. For this purpose, using descriptive-analytic method and library research tool, the role of security in outer space of the medical centers are investigated, and in the end, a set of strategies for architectural design of green space for a therapeutic complex in order to reduce the vulnerability of human resources and improve security will be presented, by taking advantage of the fundamental concepts of passive defense. The present research achievements in the designing of green spaces for the medical centers will be useful in line with promoting passive defense purposes.

Abstract (sommario):
This year will see some fundamental changes at the Annals – changes that are aimed at both enhancing and maintaining its appeal across the broad range of surgical specialties. In this respect, there have already been some important refinements to the structure of the Editorial board. The Annals will now have representatives on its panel from the diapason of subspecialties. It is hoped that this will ensure an equitable apportionment of high-quality original research, review articles and case reports from across the surgical spectrum. It represents the single most tangible adjustment to the structure of the Annals in a generation and one of which I am sure Sir Cecil Wakeley would have approved. I would like to take this opportunity to formally welcome our new board members and invite them to join with our other long-term stalwarts into what is a uniquely collegiate editorial team. As many of our fellows and members will already be aware, there has been a significant shift made over the last few months in the handling of research contributions to the Annals. In recent weeks we have completed the transition to our new submissions portal and it is encouraging that reviewers and authors alike have commended it in equal measure. While we are sadly not in a position to accept much of the material submitted to the journal (we currently accept only one tenth of all the articles subjected to peer review) we can at least aim to improve and enhance the experience for all those involved. In many ways this digital migration is a precursor to a number of innovations that will fundamentally transform the way in which we produce the Annals, the most significant of which is the launch of our new digital platform this month. These innovations signal a gradual move away from the printed version as the principal conduit by which the Annals is distributed. Inevitably, there will be those who will lament the passing of this hitherto more familiar and tactile media and so measures are in hand to allow for a more limited production of a paper version of the Annals for RCS fellows and members who continue to elect to receive their Annals in the traditional format. Medical colleges around the world are currently undergoing similar deliberations and for some a digital version may represent the only opportunity to maintain editorial independence – unhindered by the implications of a commercial publishing partner. It is however hoped that for the vast majority of fellows and members, the new and enhanced digital platform will offer significant advantages such that the digital version becomes the de facto medium of choice. Matt Whitaker and the team at the Annals should be congratulated for their sterling efforts in making this transition. The new site, now live at http://publishing.rcseng.ac.uk , will enhance the experience of finding, accessing, reading, citing, sharing and saving articles from the Annals, Bulletin and FDJ. Sign-on will be much easier; page load times quicker and the search engine more powerful and intuitive. The new platform boasts improved functionality, full in-page article text and multi-media, citation tracking, reference generators and advanced social media integration. We are simultaneously launching a new video library where we will be hosting our technical videos. It will, I am certain, become a huge resource for our surgical fraternity. Our new platform will be followed later this year by the inevitable and ubiquitous app, which will allow readers to download issues of the Annals and read them offline and at leisure on whatever their tablet of choice might be. It is my belief that these and forthcoming changes herald the transformation of the Annals into a truly modern journal with all the digital services that authors and readers now rightly expect from their RCS publication. Abstract (sommario):
Land registration is one of the government's efforts to overcome land problems in Indonesia. One of the government's programs in an effort to maximize land registration in Indonesia is through a complete systematic land registration (PTSL) program/policy to ensure legal certainty and protection in order to create prosperity in the land sector for the community. Therefore this study aims to examine the problems that often occur in the implementation of PTSL in South Tangerang City and provide input regarding the concept of law enforcement for the implementation of PTSL so that it can run optimally. This research is an empirical juridical research with a form of diagnostic and descriptive research using two data collection tools, namely the study of documents or library materials, and interviews with South Tangerang City ATR/BPN officials and the community. The results of the study show that there are many problems in the implementation of PTSL in South Tangerang City caused by the not yet optimal Legal Structure and Legal Culture besides that there are also many technical obstacles. Second, the enforcement efforts that can be carried out are improvements in legal structure and legal culture, including increasing the number of PTSL officers and providing massive education to the public about the importance of land registration and the legal consequences received when committing fraud in land registration.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: To date, it remains unclear what inspired Dr Sterling Bunnell to start using the typical World War I military term no-man’s land in hand surgical context, only in 1948. To commemorate that Bunnell passed away 60 years ago on August 20, I report on my quest to clarify this. Methods: An extensive bibliography of Bunnell was made up by use of the McDowell Series of Plastic Surgery Indexes and cross-checked by use of a PubMed search. Bunnell’s round-robin letters were searched for in the Sterling Bunnell Hand Surgery Archives of the California Pacific Medical Center Health Services Library in San Francisco, California. In addition, some of the second-generation hand surgeons were personally approached to try and trace the round-robin letters. Finally, the publications of the chiefs of the 9 hand surgical centers and 6 coworkers of Bunnell were checked for referrals to the term no-man’s land. Results: Prior to 1948, no-man’s land was not used in print in hand surgical context. Bunnell’s nearness to the trenches during World War I appears not to have inspired him immediately to start using the term. The reconnaissance tunnels dug through the soil of the no man’s land between the Allied and German trenches likely inspired him to replace a cut tendon through incisions proximal and distal to no-man’s land. Conclusions: Bunnell must have associated his tendon grafting techniques to that of the World War I trenches and tunnels at some time between 1947 and 1948.

Abstract (sommario):
RELEVANCE. Seaweed, along with all the other aquatic biological resources, is of great economic importance for all countries of the world community. Due to positive effects of biologically active substances, contained therein, it is widely used as dietary supplements, drugs, hydrocolloids (agar, alginates, carrageenan). OBJECTIVE. Based on literature data to study current knowledge about the chemical composition of seaweed and its medical-biological properties, which can be used in life activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study used literature sources from international databases Web of Science, Scopus as well as the national library system eLibrary. The keywords in the search engine: seaweed, biochemical composition, biologically active properties, medical importance. RESULTS. The chemical composition of seaweed is due to its habitat. It contains practically all chemical elements, present in seawater. Because of beneficial biological effects, seaweed is widely used by humans, especially in medicine. Among organic compounds seaweed is rich in polysaccharides, lipids, protein compounds as well as vitamins. The main part of polysaccharides belongs to alginic acid and fucoidan. Alginates have anti-inflammatory, sorption and reparative properties, normalize metabolism. Fucoidans have anticoagulant and antioxidant effect, inhibit penetration of viruses into tissue cells. DISCUSSION. Seaweed is rich in protein compounds. It contains all essential amino acids. Moreover, all classes of fatty acid (especially polyunsaturated) are found in seaweed. Lastly, many water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins are synthesized in seaweed, like plants on land: ascorbic acid, tocopherols, carotenes, thiamine, cobalamins, etc. It is concluded that seaweed can be considered a unique supplier of biologically active components: minerals, proteins, polysaccharides, polyunsaturated fats and vitamins. Its use is justified with therapeutic and preventive purposes.

Abstract (sommario):
In the late medieval period, manuscripts galore circulated in Middle Eastern libraries. Yet, very few book collections have come down to us as such or have left a documentary trail. This book discusses the largest private book collection of the pre-Ottoman Arabic Middle East for which we have both, a paper trail and a surviving corpus of the manuscripts that once sat on its shelves – the Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī Library of Damascus. On this basis, the book suggests that this library was part of the owner’s symbolic strategy to monumentalise a vanishing world of scholarship bound to his life, family, quarter and home city.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This multi-authored volume is the first book-length critical examination of the ways in which libraries have been depicted in imaginative writing from the late Middle Ages until the present. After showing how depictions of libraries by Rabelais and Cervantes came to permeate anglophone culture during and after the Renaissance, the book shows in detail how representations of the library in fiction, poetry, and drama changed throughout the ages. After several large-scale survey chapters which begin by examining medieval and Renaissance texts, individual chapters focus on selected works, authors, and topics, from Swift’s ‘Battel of the Books’ and the Romantic-era libraries of Austen, Scott, and their contemporaries through the entrapping bookrooms of George Eliot’s Middlemarch, Margaret Oliphant’s ‘The Library Window’, and M. R. James’s stories to the more modern crime fictions and fantasies where ‘the body in the library’ becomes a familiar trope. Though this book’s central focus is on British and American writing, chapters also examine in detail representations of the library in the work of Borges, Eco, Murakami, and more recent writers in France and Russia. Markedly international in its scope, Libraries in Literature also contains chapters that pay particular attention to issues of gender, the politics of national identity, and the depiction of librarians.

Abstract (sommario):
The Future of the Book: Images of Reading in the American Utopian Novel looks at how turn-of-the-twentieth-century utopian novelists imagined what the book would be like in the ideal future. This work examines many different aspects of book culture. One chapter looks at the utopian residential library, both its contents and its personal and social functions. In the ideal future, everyone has books in their home. Another chapter discusses the public library in utopia. Many of the innovations the utopian novelists imagined correct problems that real public libraries faced in late-nineteenth-century America. In utopia, everyone knows how to use the public library. A third chapter shifts the discussion of books and reading from the place of consumption to the place of production, looking at the role of the author in utopia. This chapter also attempts to answer a vexing question: Can an ideal world produce great literature? The utopian novelists said yes, but the novels they imagined in the future make their conclusions more circumspect. A parallel chapter studies what the utopian newspaper would be like. Some utopian novelists projected alternative news media, foreseeing technology that anticipated television and the internet. The final chapter examines what printed books would look like in the ideal future, looking at graphic design, universal languages, and methods to assure that the books would be printed without censorship or editorial intrusion.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses some of the professions practiced by the Negroes in Illinois during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In I. C. Harris's Colored Men's Professional and Business Directory of Chicago, published in 1885, one teacher, four physicians, and eight lawyers are documented. One of the physicians was a woman. There was no record of Negro dentists, librarians, or social service workers at the time. In 1942, colored librarians were employed at Wendell Phillips High School, Du Sable High School, and Medill High School, while several Negroes were part of the staff of the Chicago Public Library. This chapter considers Negro workers working in a variety of fields such as social service, including Dixie Brooks, Faith Jefferson Jones, and Bernice McIntosh; medicine, like Dr. Ida Nelson Rollins; and law, including those who belonged to the Cook County Bar Association.

Abstract (sommario):
The early Middle Ages provided twentieth-century poets with the material to reimagine and rework local, religious, and national identities in their writing. Poet of the Medieval Modern focuses on a key figure within this tradition, the Anglo-Welsh poet and artist David Jones (1895–1974), and represents the first extended study of the influence of early medieval culture and history from England on Jones and his novel-length late modernist poem The Anathemata (1952). The Anathemata, the second major poetic project after In Parenthesis (1937), fuses Jones’s visual and verbal arts to write a Catholic history of Britain as told through the history of man-as-artist. Drawing on unpublished archival material including manuscripts, sketches, correspondence, and, most significantly, the marginalia from David Jones’s Library, Poet of the Medieval Modern reads with Jones in order to trouble the distinction we make between poetry and scholarship. Placing this underappreciated figure firmly at the centre of new developments in modernist and medieval studies, Poet of the Medieval Modern brings the two fields into dialogue and argues that Jones uses the textual and material culture of the early Middle Ages—including Old English prose and poetry, Anglo-Latin hagiography, early medieval stone sculpture, manuscripts, and historiography—to re-envision British Catholic identity in the twentieth-century long poem. In The Anathemata Jones returned to the English record to seek out those moments where the histories of the Welsh had been elided or erased. At a time when the Middle Ages are increasingly weaponized in far-right and nationalist political discourse, the book offers a timely discussion of how the early medieval past has been resourced to both shore up and challenge English hegemonies across modern British culture.

Abstract (sommario):
Aaron McDuffie Moore (1863–1923) was born in rural Columbus County in eastern North Carolina at the close of the Civil War. Defying the odds stacked against an African American of this era, he pursued an education, alternating between work on the family farm and attending school. Moore originally dreamed of becoming an educator and attended notable teacher training schools in the state. But later, while at Shaw University, he followed another passion and entered Leonard Medical School. Dr. Moore graduated with honors in 1888 and became the first practicing African American physician in the city of Durham, North Carolina. He went on to establish the Durham Drug Company and the Durham Colored Library; spearhead and run Lincoln Hospital, the city's first secular, freestanding African American hospital; cofound North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company; help launch Rosenwald schools for African American children statewide; and foster the development of Durham's Hayti community. Dr. Moore was one-third of the mighty "Triumvirate" alongside John Merrick and C. C. Spaulding, credited with establishing Durham as the capital of the African American middle class in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and founding Durham's famed Black Wall Street. His legacy can still be seen on the city streets and country backroads today, and an examination of his life provides key insights into the history of Durham, the state, and the nation during Reconstruction and the beginning of the Jim Crow Era.

Abstract (sommario):
With the outbreak of war in the former Yugoslavia in 1991, interest in Balkan history has increased and become emotionally charged. This balanced and engagingly written history of Serbia will help readers to understand the complex web of Serbian history, politics, society, and culture and how the Serbs have dealt with the many political, military, and socioeconomic challenges in their history. It attempts to remove the veil of stereotypes and myths obscuring the significant details and developmental processes in the history of Serbia and in its relations with its neighbors. In addition to examining the political history of Serbia in the context of Central Europe, the author, a specialist in Balkan history, shows how societal and cultural developments affected Serbian history and reflected political and economic events. A timeline of significant events in the history of Serbia and an introductory chapter on Serbia today are followed by 12 chronologically organized narrative chapters that tell the story of this land from the splendor of medieval Serbia to a new beginning after the downfall of Slobodan Milosevic. Four historical maps, brief biographies of key figures in Serbian history, a glossary of terms, and a bibliographic essay provide valuable resource material for readers. Every library should update its collection of materials on Serbia with this current history.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThere is always a tension between Public health and individual medical care. The former seeks, by one ethical optic, a fundamentally consequentialist goal: the greatest good for the greatest number of individuals. The latter has, at its moral base, an encounter between a medical provider and a patient, and its ethical goal is to optimize the outcome that the patient desires. While this dichotomy of intent and effort must be nuanced, setting it out in these terms helps us understand the tensions that we see between Public health initiatives and individual medical care. This chapter will suggest that by examining two movements that attempted to insert larger community concerns into the individual patient encounter, we might gain insight into what happens in the moral space of the patient encounter when the provider is compelled to consider these larger concerns. The Eugenics movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the population health movement of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries will be considered as two examples of attempts to alter the individual patient encounter through the lens of larger societal concerns.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThere is almost no library holding Arabic manuscripts that does not include copies of some works written by Andalusi scholars, such as al-Shāṭibı̄’s (d. 590/1194) poem on Qur’ānic readings and Ibn Mālik al-Jayyānı̄’s (d. 672/1274) poem on grammar. The popularity of these and other works—related in some cases to their didacticism and in others to their encyclopaedic character—can now be ascertained thanks to the database Historia de los Autores y Transmisores Andalusíes. But why did they become so popular given that similar works produced outside al-Andalus also enjoyed circulation in the Islamic world? Are these works today those that enjoy greater popularity from among the Andalusi production? This chapter aims to provide answers to these and other questions.

Abstract (sommario):
In the summer of 1699 James Stevenson received an unexpected visitor. Stevenson had been keeper of the Advocates Library, late seventeenth-century Edinburgh’s centre for legal and historical scholarship, since 1693 but now he found himself in the role of novice instead of master. Over two June afternoons his guest, one ‘Mr. Fleming’, taught Stevenson how to date medieval handwriting and even examined many of the library’s manuscripts himself, determining their ages and correcting the descriptions made by Stevenson and his predecessor James Nasmyth. A few days later the stranger had vanished from Edinburgh, leaving Stevenson with only a baffled recollection of an unusually erudite ‘foraign travelled man’....

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter argues that the Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī Library of Damascus was the oldest continuously surviving book collection of the city when the modern Public Library was founded in 1878. It discusses the practicalities of building up such a library from scratch in late Mamluk Damascus and shows to what extent post-canonical hadith scholarship dominated this book collection. As this line of scholarship was on its way out Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī had to take enormous strides to revive books that needed oral transmission from an authorized teacher. He finally endowed this library - accompanied by a ritualistic binge reading of the books – to create a monument to one part of Syrian book culture that was about to vanish. He placed this monument into one of the most meaningful places to commemorate a way of writerly culture that had been closely tied to his family and quarter.

Abstract (sommario):
Imagining structures from the ekphrastic descriptions of the Jerusalem Temple and Temple Mount in I Kings and Ezekiel is an ancient meditation discipline, which was adopted from Jewish practices into early Christian monasticism. Though it could take various forms, ‘imagining/remembering Jerusalem’ was often practised as a devotional exercise throughout the European Middle Ages. Drawings of such an imagined character are significant to late medieval exegesis of these and related scriptural materials, particularly those associated with the commentaries of Nicholas of Lyra and the collection of visual meditations known as the Speculum theologie. This chapter queries a late medieval illuminated manuscript (Bodleian Library MS Laud Misc. 156) that, in the fifteenth century, formed part of the library of St John's Hospital in Exeter, to suggest that its materials were acquired and used for scriptural study and sermon composition by scholars of the hospital and its associated school.

Abstract (sommario):
The defense of Ossola territories, on the Spanish passageway to Flanders, in the late seventeenth centuryThe Ossola territories, in the area to the northwest of Milan, have constituted the western border most in contact with the nordic and tens-alpine world, ever since the first establishment of the Duchy of Milan. It is already known from G. Parker’s monography on the camino español that one of the common routes, which allowed overland redeployment of Spanish troops headed towards Flanders, from the Liguria region across central Europe, would go through Ossola and cross the Simplon Pass or the Gries Pass. During the turbulent historical period of the Thirty Years’ War and the following one, the changing fortunes of the Duchy of Milan in Spanish hands led to the fast and strategic conquest of Piedmontese cities (1639) and their equally rapid loss on the western border. Especially in the second half of the seventeenth century, the Franco-Savoy advance threw the Piedmontese borders into a severe crisis and the Spanish governors of Milan accordingly adopted all the military measures needed to address the issue. Fearing incursions from the north, through Romandie, Valais and Ossola, in the late seventeenth century, many field engineers among whom Beretta and Formenti, arranged the transformation of Domodossola, the outermost military stronghold only equipped with obsolete medieval walls at the time, into a “modern” rampart city (1687-1690). The engineers produced an accurate study of the territory, preserved today in the Historical Civic Archive and at the Trivulziana library in Milan in a cartographic manuscript series of all the Ossola valleys and the Swiss territory from Brig to Lake Leman.

Abstract (sommario):
Objetivo: O objetivo desta revisão foi analisar a literatura científica sobre a autonomia da mulher no processo de decisão da via de parto, a morbidade e mortalidade materna e perinatal, e os custos relacionados a cada via de parto. Fonte de dados: A busca foi realizada nas bases de dados National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) e Cochrane, no período de 1995 a 2022, utilizando-se os seguintes descritores: "cesarean section and human rights", "cesarean section and informed consent", "cesarean rates", "cesarean costs", "reproductive rights", "early term", "infant cost", "cesarean costs for the public system", "late preterm infant cost", "maternal request for cesarean section", "cesarean section and choice", "cesarean section and medical choice".

Abstract (sommario):
Cantigas de Santa Maria (‘Canticles of Holy Mary’) consists of 420 poems with musical notation written during the reign of Alfonso X of Castile (r. 1251-1284). Two of the codices preserved are richly illuminated with medieval narrative vignettes.Canticle number 185 depicts a ploy of war between the Castilian and Nasrid commanders of two mythical fortresses in the valley of the river Jandulilla, next to Sierra Mágina in south-eastern Spain, in the present-day province of Jaén. The location of the first of them, Chincoya, has generated a debate in the last decades given its early destruction and abandonment. At the second one, Bélmez, many structures have survived, since an imposing keep was built on top of its fortress when it first fell into Castilian hands in the first half of the 14th century.Over the centuries, this valley has been an important pass connecting the upper valley of the river Guadalquivir with the northern highlands of Granada. In the 13th century, this natural route was reinforced with fortifications that would later become key elements in the control of the border between the Christian kingdom of Castile and the Muslim state of Granada. This area formed part of the land that Ferdinand III of Castile had promised to deliver to Baeza in 1243 when it was conquered. The Treaty of Jaén in 1246 between the Christian king and the first ruler of the Nasrid dynasty, Muḥammad I, left some of these castles on Muslim territory, converting them into border posts in the face of the southern expansion of the Castilian kingdom after the Battle of Navas de Tolosa (1212).This paper analyses the configuration of the fortresses of Chincoya and Bélmez on the basis of the preserved remains, contrasting it with the iconography that illuminated the Códice Rico de las Cantigas de Alfonso X El Sabio (codex T, Library of El Escorial, MS T.I.1).
