Abstract (sommario):

Background: Normal labor and childbirth is fraught with complexities. In the modern times the child birth has proven to be more challenging than ever. Partogram has proven to be a simple and useful tool in monitoring normal labor. The objective of this endeavor was to site our experiences in using partogram for ‘plotting’ labors, to assess its utility, limitations and cite controversies.Methods: Authors analyzed progress of labor plotted on partograms in parturient women to see whether their labor patterns conform to the standard partogram, and can logical conclusions be drawn from their use to decide partogram’s utility and applicability.Results: The use of partogram was not universal and its charting inadequate due to lack of motivation on part of labor room residents, busy labor rooms. When plotted meticulously they showed a wide variation, and many women did not conform to the rates of dilatation of the graph. The use of partogram did not alter the rate of cesarean section for non-progressive labors with use and non-use of partogram.Conclusions: Philpott’s partogram is a very visual and useful tool to monitor labours and detect labour abnormalities timely. Although it has served as a labour management tool across the labour rooms its use is not universal. There is a plethora of conflicting opinions regarding its utility in modern obstetrics today, ranging from a complete faith in the tool to finding it obsolete and in need of a revision to calling it a medicalization of a natural process.

Abstract (sommario):

Survey data referring to characteristics of work that is going through flexibilisation process are analyzed in the paper. These are part-time jobs temporary and occasional jobs. Polarization of labor force as a consequence of education ("self-programming" and "generic" labor force), negotiation power of labor unions, and capacities of labor force in an informatics society are also researched. All these characteristics are not present in Croatian society at the same level, they do not equally affect employed and unemployed population (taking in consideration that borders between employed and unemployed are not clear), and are not present by the same degree in different types of settlements (there is a difference between cities and villages, and also between Zagreb and all other settlements). Negotiation power of labor unions is very much brought into question.

Abstract (sommario):

Employers often wrestle with whether or not to suspend an employee and the issue is what needs to be done before an employee could be suspended. Suspending an employee means to deprive him or her from entering the work place for a period of time, due to alleged misconduct which, due to the nature of the alleged misconduct and in the opinion of the employer, warrants the employee not to be in or near the workplace. Section 23 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, affords every employee the right to fair labour practices and this right should be affected by the Labour Relations Act, 1995 (LRA). Unfortunately the LRA only deals with the unfair suspension under the definition of an unfair labour practice in section 186(2) by stating that the meaning of unfair labour practice is any act or omission that arises between an employer and an employee involving the unfair suspension of an employee or any other unfair disciplinary action short of dismissal in respect of an employee. The focus of this document thus is to scrutinise the lack of legislative guidelines relating to the procedural fairness of suspension of employees. It would thus necessitate an overview of the nature of suspension which would be discussed in length by way of referring to the right to suspend an employee as well as the application of the courts in such cases, the distinction between suspension as a preventative, or as a punitive measure and the possibility of suspension resulting in an unfair labour practice. The distinction between preventative and punitive suspensions are highlighted. Since it is not clear when, how and for how long an employee may be suspended, in the absence of clear guidelines, employers have to turn to the courts’ interpretation to get the necessary guidance on the application of a suspension. In order to ensure that the employer, experiencing unnecessary difficulty with the implementation of procedural fairness of suspensions, in a meaningful way, be assisted by the proposal that legislature consider to address this by including clear guidelines under Item 3 of Schedule 8 of the LRA.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO
Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar a supervisão de estágio como parte integrante do processo de trabalho do assistente social na contemporaneidade. Para tanto, foram levadas em conta as transformações que vêm ocorrendo no mundo do trabalho e os impactos que estas vêm trazendo para a profissão, tanto no sentido da formação como no da atuação dos assistentes sociais, bem como suas implicações para a efetivação do Projeto Ético-Político da profissão. Assim, constituem-se como elementos norteadores desta pesquisa o conhecimento e a reflexão sobre o papel da supervisão no processo de trabalho do assistente social, bem como sobre as formas de enfrentamento aos desafios impostos aos cursos de Serviço Social no que se refere à supervisão de estágio supervisionado. Por outro lado, observou-se que a supervisão e o estágio vêm recebendo impactos similares aos sofridos pela profissão em virtude das mudanças no mundo do trabalho. Especificamente, buscou-se conhecer de que forma as instituições campo de estágio do curso de Serviço Social da PUC-Rio vêm tratando a mediação entre a teoria e a prática e a política de estágio adotada pelo curso, no período 2009.1, traçando-se um perfil dos assistentes sociais supervisores de estágio. Ademais, foi necessário identificar o entendimento acerca da temática processo de trabalho, de forma a ser possível compreender como a dimensão ético-política da profissão ganha expressão no processo de supervisão e, também, de forma a contribuir para a construção de estratégias que busquem a efetivação do estágio e da supervisão nos moldes defendidos pelas diretrizes curriculares da Associação Brasileira de Ensino e Pesquisa em Serviço Social (ABEPSS). A metodologia utilizada foi a quali-quantitativa, que se compôs de estudos sobre o projeto político-pedagógico do curso de Serviço Social da PUC-Rio, além de outros documentos, bem como de entrevistas semi-estruturadas com supervisores das unidades campo de estágio.
This study has as its objective to analyze the internship supervision as an integrant part of the labor process of the social assistant nowadays. To achieve this we took in consideration the transformations that are occurring in the world of the work and its consequences for the Social Work as much as in the sense of the graduation of social workers as in the sense of the performance of these professionals.Thus the comprehension and the reflection about de internship supervision and the challenges that the Social Work faces nowadays are central aspects of this study. On the other hand, it was possible to observe that the internship and its supervision are suffering similar impacts of those suffered by the Social Work in reason of the transformations that are occurring in world of work. Specifically we sought to know how the training fields of the PUC-Rio Social Work course are addressing the question of the mediation between theory and practical application in the context of the internship policy adopted in the first semester of the year 2009. Therefore we traced profiles of the internship supervisors and it was also necessary to identify the comprehension about the theme labor process. That was accomplished in such way that was possible to understand how the ethical-political dimension of the profession is expressed in the supervision process and also as a contribution for the construction of new strategies in the direction pointed out by the curricular directives of the Associação Brasileira de Ensino e Pesquisa em Serviço Social (ABEPSS). The methodology was qualitative and quantitative and we used interviews as well as documental analysis.

This study did not find any significant main effects of tattoos on hirability or salary.

Abstract (sommario):

Through a review of adherence literature and thirty qualitative interviews, a theoretical view of the adherence process has been created which enables an understanding of the process from initial awareness of need through to post-consumption assessment. This view is proposed to answer the research question, what is adherence from a process perspective? It builds on Service-Dominant Logic to theorise the act of adherence for the first time. In this it views adherence as a complex relationship of interacting service (eco)systems. This takes the theoretical understanding of adherence beyond existing theories and models and into the act of consumption itself, thus providing theoretical visibility of the end-to-end process of adherence. The literature review and qualitative research identified six factors of adherence and three rules governing the adherence process. Perhaps surprisingly, interviews found little difference in causes of non-adherence between developed and developing worlds. A quantitative survey operationalised these adherence factors and rules through the development of a quantitative process of adherence derived from the qualitative process. However, due to survey limitations this research provided no additional insights. A new viewpoint on adherence is advanced. This considers adherence as a single act and therefore as an individual opportunity to be adherent. This permits a greater focus on the enablers and inhibitors of adherence at a point in time rather than it being averaged over many acts in different situations. It also includes a discussion of managerial implications, proposals for future research, and thoughts on research limitations.

As external factors increasingly influence the way businesses operate, companies have to be able to adapt in order to cope with these external influences. They have to become agile and responsive to change in order to gain a real competitive advantage. However, most companies believe that they are unable to achieve this to their satisfaction. One of the main reasons cited is their inability to manage change effectively. The research summarised in this report identifies how the process of managing change can be facilitated and improved. It builds on the main concerns and issues identified in the change management literature and is supported with evidence from companies undergoing change. The research focuses, in particular, on best practice benchmarking, critical success factors for change, the role of corporate culture, understanding learning organisations and how to sustain change. Based on these research areas, two major developments are proposed to help organisations to manage change more effectively. The first method focuses on a benchmarking tool for change management. Formed from the actual practices of organisations who have managed change effectively, the tool provides a quantifiable way for companies to measure and improve their performance in change management. Its successful implementation in a number of different applications and levels, as demonstrated in the research, suggests that it could provide significant benefits to any organisation undergoing change. The second method focuses on sustaining long term successful change management, through more effective capture, sharing and transfer of knowledge within a company. This is known as corporate learning. A corporate learning framework, based on best practice, is proposed as a way forward for organisations to ensure that a holistic approach is taken when implementing corporate learning. Used correctly, these innovative methods provide mechanisms which can help any company undergoing change to improve the way in which it manages that change.

Software vulnerability discovery, patching, and exploitation—collectively known as the vulnerability lifecycle—is time consuming and labor intensive. Automating the process could significantly improve software security and offensive hacking. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Cyber Grand Challenge supported teams of researchers from 2014 to 2016 that worked to create these tools. China took notice. In 2017, China hosted its first Robot Hacking Game, seeking to automate the software vulnerability lifecycle. Since then, China has hosted seven such competitions and the People’s Liberation Army has increased its role in hosting the games.

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is in the process of modernization, which it expects to achieve by 2035. This requires a national indicator to gauge the progress and level of the country’s modernization drive. This working paper provides an indicator that assesses the progress in the PRC’s modernization journey, and applies this modernization indicator—structured on thematic categories, subcategories, and intersection—to the PRC’s performance, which is then compared with countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the G20. The paper also examines four major policy implications of this modernization for the PRC, which will be more durable and successful if coupled with effective division of labor and synergy with stakeholders.

This learning paper describes Oxfam's experience of conducting a Participatory Gender Audit with private sector companies in the agriculture sector in the OPT. It highlights issues such as women’s limited access to the labor market, their weak representation both as staff and as decision makers, the absence of gender-sensitive working conditions and policies, and a lack of consideration for women as customers and suppliers. The paper looks at the approach used when conducting the audits and the challenges around their implementation. It provides ideas and learning on how to successfully manage the audits so that companies are willing to buy in to the process and are supported to adopt gender-sensitive policies.

Innovative technologies have an impact on the countries socio- economic development, the structure of labor market and educational services transformation. Rapid IT industry development constantly requires qualified programmers capable of professional self-improvement throughout life, the driving force of which is the individual motivation which activates the individual self-development process, optimizes thinking and develops special professional qualities, moral and ethical values. The main article purpose is to analyze the state of the form of motivational readiness for future programmer’s professional self-improvement, to identify problems of its formation in colleges and to determine the ways of its increase as one of the main factors of quality improvement. To achieve it, a complex of theoretical and empirical methods was used, with help of which a number of problems were revealed which slow down the process of improving the quality of future programmers professional training. To eliminate them, a system of phased motivation for future specialists professional self-improvement has been developed on the basis of general secondary education, which can be integrated into the teaching of both general education and professionally-oriented disciplines; ways of improving the quality of the educational process through the creation of a cloud of oriented environment, the introduction of innovative teaching technologies, special training of teachers in the system of professional development.

New technological trends, such as digitization, artificial intelligence and robotics, have the power to drastically increase economic output but may also displace workers. In this paper we assess the risk of automation for female and male workers in four Latin American countries Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and El Salvador. Our study is the first to apply a task-based approach with a gender perspective in this region. Our main findings indicate that men are more likely than women to perform tasks linked to the skills of the future, such as STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), information and communications technology, management and communication, and creative problem-solving tasks. Women thus have a higher average risk of automation, and 21% of women vs. 19% of men are at high risk (probability of automation greater than 70%). The differential impacts of the new technological trends for women and men must be assessed in order to guide the policy-making process to prepare workers for the future. Action should be taken to prevent digital transformation from worsening existing gender inequalities in the labor market.

The aim of this paper is to conduct a time series econometric analysis in order to empirically evaluate the role of financialisation in the slowdown of labour productivity in Portugal during the period from 1980 to 2017. During that time, the Portuguese economy faced a financialisation phenomenon due to the European integration process and the corresponding imposition of a strong wave of privatisation, liberalisation and deregulation of the Portuguese financial system. At the same time, Portuguese labour productivity exhibited a sustained downward trend, which seems to contradict the well-entrenched mainstream hypothesis on the finance–productivity nexus. Based on the post-Keynesian literature, we identify four channels through which the phenomenon of financialisation has impaired labour productivity, namely weak economic performance, the fall in labour’s share of income, the rise of inequality in personal income and an intensification of the degree of financialisation. The paper finds that lagged labour productivity, economic performance and labour income share positively impact labour productivity in Portugal, while personal income inequality and the degree of financialisation negatively impact labour productivity in Portugal. The paper also finds that the main triggers for the slowdown of labour productivity in Portugal are the degree of financialisation and personal income inequality over the last decades.

Without the informal economy, there would be no waste recycling in most Asian cities. In many Asian countries, waste management systems are underdeveloped, with the informal economy dominating the processes of waste collection, sorting and recycling. In this short report, we present preliminary findings from our survey of 34 waste pickers in Bangkok. The report sheds light on their working conditions, health risks, gendered dimensions and the challenges they face in waste recycling.

The commercialisation of cocoa production in Ghana has a long history dating back to the nineteenth century. The process of commercial development in cocoa is well documented and provides an alternative mode to contemporary models of commercialisation rooted in the adoption of modern technology and integration of farmers into markets. This working paper critically analyses frameworks for agricultural commercialisation in cocoa through intensification based on the uptake of synthetic inputs and hybrid seeds, by placing agricultural development within a broader framework of the historical development of the frontier in Ghana, and the related problems of ecological and economic crises. The study examines access to land, labour and technology, and how the complex interactions of scarcity of access to physical resources and labour influence farmers’ farming strategies and adoption of technology.
