Abstract (sommario):
Many learning institutions have been restructuring to meet the demands of clients and staff (Nicholls 1996). Over the last two years the Kalgoorlie campus has been re-engineering its structure, including its management practices and teaching and learning strategies. Just as the administration has to be lean and mean in these economic times, so the teaching and learning has to be cost effective, however our main reason for bringing in flexible learning is to improve customer service' and increase the number of student enrolments. In other campuses offering flexible learning it has been found that offering more control and choice dramatically increases enrolments. Our market is aimed at adults and adults have a more practical approach to their educational needs and also more experience to bringto the learning process. Flexible delivery both attracts students and is an economical method of delivery. We have been moving piecemeal towards a more flexible approach but the opening of a flexible learning centre is an announcement to the world that we are committed to our customers. In February I was given a project to open a flexible learning centre in nine weeks. I could access $50,000. I did manage to access another two small grants; however we were operating on a shoestring. It has taken 9 months [just like a baby] but we have a successful outcome. The following are some of my findings as I researched the topic and some conclusions I reached.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractA method for the analysis of cathodoluminescence spectra is described that enables quantitative trace-element-level distributions to be mapped within minerals and materials. Cathodoluminescence intensities for a number of rare earth elements are determined by Gaussian peak fitting, and these intensities show positive correlation with independently measured concentrations down to parts per million levels. The ability to quantify cathodoluminescence spectra provides a powerful tool to determine both trace element abundances and charge state, while major elemental levels can be determined using more traditional X-ray spectrometry. To illustrate the approach, a scheelite from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, is hyperspectrally mapped and the cathodoluminescence is calibrated against microanalyses collected using a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Trace element maps show micron scale zoning for the rare earth elements Sm3+, Dy3+, Er3+, and Eu3+/Eu2+. The distribution of Eu2+/Eu3+ suggests that both valences of Eu have been preserved in the scheelite since its crystallization 1.63 billion years ago.

Abstract (sommario):
Bezoars (felt balls) from sheep on Jeedamya and Adelong stations north of Kalgoorlie, and on a farm near York, Western Australia, were examined microscopically and found to consist principally of a dense mass of sclerenchyme fibres. In size, colour and texture the bezoars closely resemble bezoars composed of plant epidermal hairs, described by South African workers. Acacra ramulosa is suggested as the likely source of bezoar fibres at Jeedamya and Adelong. The source of fibres from York was not determined. The identification of plant species from which bezoar fibres are derived may make possible the control of bezoariasis by grazing management.

Until 1 July 1999 the Library Resource Centre I managed was an autonomous operation which serviced the need of the Higher Education and the VET sector of Curtin University - Kalgoorlie Campus. From that date we became part of the Curtin Library and Information Service and will now operate within their environment. I rapidly came to understand that there was little knowledge of the VET sector within my new peer group and so I prepared a paper on the role of the library within the VET sector and how it differed from the Curtin LIS traditional operation.

Abstract (sommario):
Yintarri is a West Australian government community school situated at Coonana: 180Km due east of Kalgoorlie. It has about sixty children who enter school speaking Wangkatja, a Western Desert language. There is no formal bi-lingual program; the language of instruction being English. The Yintarri Project is an International Literacy Year (ILY) funded program which uses touch-sensitive boards with microcomputers to assist in the development of literacy in both Wangkatja and English. This is accomplished, at Yintarri, with Concept Keyboards and Acorn BBC microcomputers though the same facilities could be provided with all other major types of computer. The project won a major ILY Literacy Achievement Award for its ‘Outstanding Contribution to Literacy‘.

Abstract (sommario):
The putative interspecific hybrid known as Eucalyptus brachyphylla C. Gardner, which is known to occur at two sites near Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, contains the non-terpenoid ester 4-methyl-2-pentyl acetate and the related alcohol 4-methylpentan-2-ol in its leaves. These compounds are otherwise known to occur in the leaves of only four Eucalyptus species and several putative interspecific hybrids. This, with the results of multivariate analyses of morphometric and oil composition data, adds considerable weight to;earlier suggestions that E. 'brachyphylla' is an hybrid of E. loxophleba Benth. and E. kruseana F. Muell. The presence at one site of two distinct chemotypes common to both parental species and to the hybrid plants is demonstrated and discussed.

The learning technologies area is a focus for many thousands of dollars across the state and with the need to achieve certain ratios by the Year 2002, teachers can be forgiven for thinking that learning technologies is about the quality and quantity of computer equipment in the school. However, it is much more than that; it's about using Learning Technology tools to improve the learning outcomes for our students. These tools enhance student learning by reducing isolation, improving efficiency, increasing motivation and providing opportunities for student interaction and decision-making. During this paper, we will examine a few of the ways South Kalgoorlie Primary School has integrated learning technologies into classroom programs to enhance the learning environment for our students.

Graeme Talbot Smith was born in Adelaide on the 10th of February 1938. He spent some of his early childhood in Brisbane where his father was on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur during the latter part of the Second World War. After the war, his family moved to Melbourne where Graeme completed his secondary schooling. He then went to Melbourne University where he majored in Zoology and Geology. The only time he professionally used any of his geological skills was when he worked in the mining industry at Kalgoorlie during one of his university breaks. Graeme chose to specialize in Zoology because he felt there was more scope for employment in that discipline. His first published paper was in 1964. It was a note on a bat mandible found in a cave in Victoria.

This study is aimed at assessing the benefits of specialised reseeding techniques for establishment of annual Medicago spp., or for regeneration projects, in degraded Mediterranean arid zones rangelands. Two seeding techniques were compared near Kalgoorlie and Carnarvon in Western Australia: 'pit' seeding versus 'flat' seeding, the latter simulating conventional farm seeding. Results indicate that pit seeding is more effective than flat seeding in these environments during the critical establishment phase of annual Medicam SDD. seeding establishment was increasehby 9 to 60 per cent; plant vigour by 20 to 130 per cent; regrowth after late rain by 67 per cent;@ number per seedling by 65 to 140 per cent; pod weight per seedling by 108 to 255 per cent; and the number of days to flowering was reduced by up to 8 per cent.

Abstract (sommario):
Between 1978 and 1979 I taught in a number of small newly established schools in some of the communities of what was then referred to as the Central Reserve (now called the Ngaanyatjarra Lands) in Western Australia. I had recently graduated from college and was very uncertain about the content and methodology required to be an effective teacher of Aboriginal students. This general lack of confidence was compounded by my lack of experience in interacting with Aboriginal people, especially those who spoke little English. Moreover, there was no support service from the regional education office in Kalgoorlie (about 1000 kms to the south) and I generally taught in one-teacher situations with little opportunity to share with other colleagues. In general, I found my professional life in the Central Reserve to be quite dissatisfying and disillusioning.

Abstract (sommario):
Petzite, Ag3AuTe2, crystallizes in the space group I4132, which is a Sohncke type of space group where chiral crystal structures can occur. The structure refinement of petzite reported long ago [Frueh (1959). Am. Mineral. 44, 693–701] did not provide any information about the absolute structure. A new single-crystal X-ray diffraction refinement has now been performed on a sample from Lake View Mine, Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie, Australia, which has resulted in a reliable absolute structure [a Flack parameter of 0.05 (3)], although this corresponds to the opposite enantiomorph reported previously. The minimum Te–Te distance is 3.767 (3) Å, slightly shorter than the van der Waals bonding distance, which suggests a weak interaction between the two chalcogens. XANES spectra near the Au and Te L III edges suggest that the chemical-bonding character of Au in petzite is more metallic than in other gold minerals.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe objective of this paper is to demonstrate that the gradient-constrained discounted Steiner point algorithm (GCDSPA) described in an earlier paper by the authors is applicable to a class of real mine planning problems, by using the algorithm to design a part of the underground access in the Rubicon gold mine near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. The algorithm is used to design a decline connecting two ore bodies so as to maximize the net present value (NPV) associated with the connector. The connector is to break out from the access infrastructure of one ore body and extend to the other ore body. There is a junction on the connector where it splits in two near the second ore body. The GCDSPA is used to obtain the optimal location of the junction and the corresponding NPV. The result demonstrates that the GCDSPA can be used to solve certain problems in mine planning for which currently available methods cannot provide optimal solutions.
