Abstract (sommario):
The implementation of joint source-channel coding (JSCC) schemes using deep learning has accelerated the development of semantic communication research. Existing JSCC schemes based on deep learning (DL) are trained on a fixed signal-to-noise ratio (SNR); however, these trained models are not designed for scenarios in which the SNR is dynamic. Therefore, a novel semantic adaptive model for semantic communication—called joint source-channel coding with adaptive models (AMJSCC)—that has a semantic adaptive model selection (SAMS) module is proposed. The joint source-channel encoding (JSCE) model and the joint source-channel decoding (JSCD) model adapt according to both real-time channel conditions and system available computational power resources. Furthermore, residual networks with different layers are investigated to further improve the accuracy of information recovery. Simulation results demonstrate that our model can achieve higher recovery similarity and is more robust and adaptive to the SNR and communication resources. Meanwhile, compared to the state-of-the-art deep JSCC methods, it reduces storage space and communication resource consumption.

Abstract (sommario):
Livestock and companion animal health have a direct impact on human health. Research on clinical laboratory technology for veterinary medicine is as important as that on human laboratory technology. Reagents and analysis equipment for human medical laboratory tests are often used in veterinary medicine. Medical laboratories in Japan utilize the Japan Society of Clinical Chemistry (JSCC) method for blood alkaline phosphatase (ALP) analysis. The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) method is used worldwide for ALP catalytic concentration measurement. When the IFCC method is used, human blood ALP activity is approximately one-third of the JSCC method’s activity. The JSCC method for ALP measurement was switched to the IFCC method in medical laboratories in Japan in April 2020 for global standardization purpose. It is uncertain whether conventional JSCC method reagents will continue to be supplied. In veterinary medicine, the relationship between the JSCC and IFCC methods in terms of ALP measurement is almost unclear. This study investigated the regression between JSCC and IFCC methods measuring ALP in bovine, canine, feline, and human. The regression formulas for bovine, canine, feline, and human ALP values using the conventional JSCC (x) and IFCC (y) methods are y = 0.379x + 0.124, y = 0.289x + 8.291, y = 0.358x + 0.432, and y = 0.337x + 2.959, respectively. These results suggested that the IFCC method measurement could be estimated by approximately one-third of the JSCC method measurement in animal species such as bovine, canine, and feline. By applying the conversion factors proposed in this study, a very good correlation could be obtained between the two methods for each animal.

Abstract (sommario):
<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> The Japan Lung Cancer Society (JLCS) and the Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology (JSCC) have proposed a new four-tiered cytology reporting system for lung carcinoma (JLCS-JSCC system). Prior to the proposal, the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology (PSC) had proposed a revised reporting system (PSC system), which comprises the “neoplastic, benign neoplasm, and low-grade carcinoma” category (N-B-LG category), in addition to the 4 categories of the JLCS-JSCC system. This study aimed to evaluate the interobserver agreement of the JLCS-JSCC system with an additional dataset with more benign lesions in comparison with the PSC system. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> We analyzed 167 cytological samples, which included 17 benign lesions, obtained from the respiratory system. Seven observers classified these cases into each category by reviewing one Papanicolaou-stained slide per case according to the JLCS-JSCC system and PSC system. <b><i>Results:</i></b> The interobserver agreement was moderate in the JLCS-JSCC (<i>k</i> = 0.499) and PSC (<i>k</i> = 0.485) systems. Of the 167 samples, 17 samples were benign lesions: 7 pulmonary hamartomas, 5 sclerosing pneumocytomas, 2 squamous papillomas, one solitary fibrous tumor, one meningioma, and one lymphocytic proliferation. There were diverse sample types as follows: 11 touch smears, 3 brushing smears, 2 aspirations, and one sputum sample. Fourteen samples (82.3%) were categorized into “negative” or “atypical” by more than half of the observers in the JLCS-JSCC system. Conversely, 3 samples were categorized as “suspicious” or “malignant” by more than half of the observers in the JLCS-JSCC system. On the other hand, 11 samples (64.7%) were categorized into the N-B-LG category by more than half of the observers in the PSC system. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> The concordance rate in the JLCS-JSCC system was slightly higher than that in the PSC system; however, the interobserver agreement was moderate in both the JLCS-JSCC and PSC systems. These results indicate that both the JLCS-JSCC and PSC systems are clinically useful. Therefore, both systems are expected to have clinical applications. It may be important to integrate the 2 systems and construct a universal system that can be used more widely in clinical practice.

Abstract (sommario):
Since April 2020, the method for lactate dehydrogenase (LD) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity measurements in Japan has been switched from the Japan Society of Clinical Chemistry (JSCC) reference method, which is only used in Japan, to the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) reference method. However, in some species, the relationship between the blood values of both enzymes measured by the two methods remains unclear. Hence, values measured by these two methods cannot be used interchangeably. Therefore, this relationship was examined in ICR mice and Wistar/ST rats. The LD and ALP values obtained by both methods were plotted on scatter graphs, and regression equations were obtained. To compare the JSCC (x) and IFCC (y) methods, regression equations were generated for LD values in non-hemolytic samples as follows: y = 0.954x − 4.008 for ICR mice and y = 0.963x − 6.324 for Wistar/ST rats. The conversion factors from the JSCC to the IFCC methods were 0.954 (mice) and 0.963 (rats). The conversion coefficients from the IFCC to the JSCC methods were 1.048 (mice) and 1.088 (rats). For ALP values in fasted mouse and rat samples, the regression equations were y = 0.336x − 2.247 and y = 0.314x − 17.626, respectively. The conversion factors from the JSCC to the IFCC methods were 0.336 (mice) and 0.314 (rats). The conversion coefficients from the IFCC to the JSCC methods were 2.978 (mice) and 3.188 (rats). These conversion factors can be used for the mutual conversion of both measured values during the transition period from the JSCC to the IFCC method. However, it should be noted that the conversion coefficients for both LD and ALP were affected by isozyme composition.

Abstract (sommario):
Although extensive optimization of encoding and decoding schemes for joint source-channel coding (JSCC) systems has been conducted, efficient optimization schemes are still required for designing and optimizing the linking matrix between variable nodes of the source code and check nodes of the channel code. A scheme has been proposed for design and optimization of linking matrix with multi-edges by analyzing the performance of the JSCC system using the joint protograph extrinsic information transfer algorithm to calculate decoding thresholds. The proposed scheme incorporates structural constraints and is effective in designing and optimizing the multi-edges in linking matrix for the JSCC system. Experimental results have demonstrated that the designed and optimized linking matrix significantly improves the performance of the JSCC system. Furthermore, the proposed scheme reduces the complexity of the solution space for the optimized example.

Abstract (sommario):
This work considers the design and practical implementation of JSCC-Cast, a comprehensive analog video encoding and transmission system requiring a reduced amount of digital metadata. Suitable applications for JSCC-Cast are multicast transmissions over time-varying channels and Internet of Things wireless connectivity of end devices having severe constraints on their computational capabilities. The proposed system exhibits a similar image quality compared to existing analog and hybrid encoding alternatives such as Softcast. Its design is based on the use of linear transforms that exploit the spatial and temporal redundancy and the analog encoding of the transformed coefficients with different protection levels depending on their relevance. JSCC-Cast is compared to Softcast, which is considered the benchmark for analog and hybrid video coding, and with an all-digital H.265-based encoder. The results show that, depending on the scenario and considering image quality metrics such as the structural similarity index measure, the peak signal-to-noise ratio, and the perceived quality of the video, JSCC-Cast exhibits a performance close to that of Softcast but with less metadata and not requiring a feedback channel in order to track channel variations. Moreover, in some circumstances, the JSCC-Cast obtains a perceived quality for the frames comparable to those displayed by the digital one.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, we design a joint source and channel coding (JSCC) framework combining the source polar coding and the channel polar coding. The source is first compressed using a polar code (PC), and source check decoding is employed to construct an error set containing the index of all source decoding errors. Then, the proposed JSCC system employs another PC or systematic PC (SPC) to protect the compressed source and the error set against noise, which is called double PC (D-PC) or systematic double PC (SD-PC), respectively. For a D-PC JSCC system, we prove a necessary condition for the optimal mapping between the source PC and the channel PC. On the receiver side, by introducing the joint factor graph representation of the D-PC and SD-PC, we propose two joint source and channel decoders: a joint belief propagation (J-BP) decoder, and a systematic joint belief propagation (SJ-BP) decoder. In addition, a biased extrinsic information transfer (B-EXIT) chart is developed for various decoders as a theoretical performance evaluation tool. Both B-EXIT and simulation results show that the performance of the proposed JSCC scheme has no error floor and outperforms the turbo-like BP decoder.

Abstract (sommario):
As the demands of multimedia and data services increase, efficient communication systems are being investigated to meet the high data rate requirements. Joint source-channel coding (JSCC) schemes were proposed for improving overall system performance. However, existing JSCC systems may suffer a symbol error rate (SER) performance loss when residual source redundancy is not fully exploited. This paper presents a novel, low-complexity JSCC system, which consists of a fixed-length source block code and an irregular convolutional channel code. A simple approach is proposed to design source codes that minimize the SER of source detection and guarantee the convergence of iterative source-channel decoding (ISCD). To improve the waterfall performance of ISCD, the channel code is optimized by using the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart and the concept of irregular code. The channel code is constituted by recursive non-systematic convolutional (RNSC) subcodes. The weights of subcodes are optimized to make the EXIT curves of the channel decoder and the source decoder well-matched, and therefore, a near-capacity performance is achieved. Simulation results show that the proposed system achieves more than 1 dB gains and 0.3 dB gains compared to the separate source-channel code system and the other optimal JSCC systems, respectively. Additionally, the performance of the proposed system is within 1 dB deviation from the Shannon limit capacity.

Abstract (sommario):
<span>Traditionally, it is assumed that source coding is perfect and therefore, the redundancy of the source encoded bit-stream is zero. However, in reality, this is not the case as the existing source encoders are imperfect and yield residual redundancy at the output. The residual redundancy can be exploited by using Joint Source Channel Coding (JSCC) with Markov chain as the source. In several studies, the statistical knowledge of the sources has been assumed to be perfectly available at the receiver. Although the result was better in terms of the BER performance, practically, the source correlation knowledge were not always available at the receiver and thus, this could affect the reliability of the outcome. The source correlation on all rows and columns of the 2D sources were well exploited by using a modified Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek-Raviv (BCJR) algorithm in the decoder. A parameter estimation technique was used jointly with the decoder to estimate the source correlation knowledge. Hence, this research aims to investigate the parameter estimation for 2D JSCC system which reflects a practical scenario where the source correlation knowledge are not always available. We compare the performance of the proposed joint decoding and estimation technique with the ideal 2D JSCC system with perfect knowledge of the source correlation knowledge. Simulation results reveal that our proposed coding scheme performs very close to the ideal 2D JSCC system.</span>

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Type 2 diabetes mellitus has become a major concern of Australian healthcare providers. From rates of barely more than 1 percent in the mid-90s, diabetes is now the leading cause of morbidity in the country. To combat the growing diabetes epidemic, Western Sydney Local Health District created the Western Sydney Diabetes (WSD) initiative. One of the key components of the WSD initiative since 2014 has been joint specialist case conferencing (JSCC). The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the JSCC service including both individual- and practice-based changes. Design/methodology/approach The authors evaluated the JSCC program by conducting an analysis of patient-level data in addition to a discrete practice-level study. The study aim was to examine both the effect on individual patients and the practice, as well as acceptability of the program for both doctors and their patients. The evaluation included data collection and analysis of primary patient outcomes, as well as a survey of GPs and patients. Patient data on primary outcomes were obtained by accessing and downloading them through GP practice management software by GP practice staff. Findings The authors found significant improvements at both the patient levels, with reductions in BMI, HbA1c and blood pressure sustained at three years, and at the practice level with improvements in markers of patient management. The authors also found high acceptability of the program from both patients and GPs. Originality/value This paper provides good evidence for the use of a JSCC program to improve diabetes management in primary care through capacity building with GPs.

Abstract (sommario):
Next-generation wireless networks are expected to support sensing techniques. Important examples are intelligent transport systems, where vehicles continuously sense environmental changes and exchange information with vehicles or central servers. There are some naive solutions to do both tasks which propose to share the resources between the two. But, the high spectrum and hardware costs of these approaches encourage to integrate the sensing and communication (ISAC) tasks via a single waveform and a single hardware platform. This thesis focuses on information-theoretic ISAC. We review the first information-theoretic model for ISAC in [1] where a statedependent memoryless channel (SDMC) with generalized feedback signals observed at the transmitter (Tx). Our first contribution is to characterize the fundamental tradeoff between communication rates and sensing distortion of statedependent single-Tx two-Rx broadcast channels (BC) that are physically degraded. We also provide inner and outer bounds on the achievable rate-distortion tradeoffs for general BCs. The single-Txs’ optimal sensing strategy is a simple symbol-by-symbol estimator and the optimality of this estimator stems from the fact that the generalized feedback channels and the state-sequence both are memoryless. This is not necessarily the case in setups with more than one Tx. Specifically, for the MAC, we propose collaborative sensing where each Tx first compresses the obtained outputs and inputs to extract state information, then transmits the compression index using a pure channel code to the other Tx. Also, we describe two collaborative ISAC schemes for D2D, based on source-channel separation/Han’s two-way channel scheme and based on joint source-channel coding (JSCC). In both the MAC and the D2D scenario, our ISAC schemes are strictly concave in the rate-distortion pairs and thus also improve over classical time- or resource-sharing strategies

Abstract (sommario):
Linear video coding (LVC) schemes have recently demonstrated a high potential for delivering video content over challenging wireless channels. SoftCast represents the pioneer of the LVC schemes. Different from current video transmission standards and particularly useful in broadcast situation, SoftCast is a joint source-channel coding system where pixels are processed by successive linear operations (DCT transform, power allocation, quasi-analog modulation) and directly transmitted without quantization or coding (entropic or channel). This allows to provide a received video quality directly proportional to the transmission channel quality, without any feedback information, while avoiding the complex adaptation mechanisms of conventional schemes. A first contribution of this thesis is the study of the end-to-end performances of SoftCast. Theoretical models are thus proposed taking into account the bandwidth constraints of the application, the power allocation, as well as the type of decoder used at the reception (LLSE, ZF). Based on a subjective test campaign, a second part concern an original study of the video quality and specific artifacts related to SoftCast. In a third part, preprocessing methods are proposed to increase the received quality in terms of PSNR scores with an average gain of 3 dB. Finally, an adaptive algorithm modifying the size of the group of pictures (GoP) according to the characteristics of the transmitted video content is proposed. This solution allows to obtain about 1 dB additional gains in terms of PSNR scores

Abstract (sommario):
Education reform in Namibia brought about changes to mathematics education since independence. This has put pressure on the government to provide both resources and qualified mathematics teachers to help drive the reform process in all teaching and learning activities. This included availing reliable and valid national examination results which is a measure of whether the newly introduced programmes are working or not. For the Ministry of Education this meant training more mathematics teachers and ensuring that competent and reliable teachers are appointed for marking national examination every year. The teachers' training process however, has not been going as fast as it was expected and year after year the Directorate of National Examinations and Assessment experienced problems in obtaining competent teachers for the marking of national examination. The purpose of the study was to understand the differences in marking performances of the JSC mathematics national examination markers. Particularly the study was to create a clear and detailed understanding of different factors that could possibly affect the marking performance of different markers. In addition, the study was to investigate the effect the mathematical content knowledge of the markers has on their marking performance. It was evident from the findings that their mathematical content knowledge had influenced their marking performance. Moreover the research findings also gave a strong indication that there are other factors that were influencing the markers marking performance. These were the markers' knowledge of the assessment and marking process, the markers' marking experience, the markers' socioeconomic background. The difference in their moderators' input has emerged as the other factors that have influenced their performance in marking and consequently contributed to the differences in their marking performances.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The article is about the research of a optimum number of processor cores for launching the Parallel Cluster Multiple Labeling Technique on modern supercomputer systems installed in the JSCC RAS. This technique may be used in any field as a tool for differentiating large lattice clusters, because it is given input in a format independent of the application. At the JSCC RAS, this tool was used to study the problem of the spread of epidemics, for which an appropriate multiagent model was developed. In the course of imitation experiments, a variant of the Parallel Cluster Multiple Labeling Technique for percolation Hoshen-Kopelman clusters related to the tag linking mechanism, which can also be used in any area as a tool for differentiating large-size lattice clusters, was used to be improved on a multiprocessor system.
