Abstract (sommario):
Effect of Storage Duration and Temperature on Sets Loss and Bolting of OnionOnion sets of two cultivars - Rawska and Jetset F1were calibrated into three grades depending on the diameter of onion (11-15, 16-20 and 21-25 mm). From October to March, sets were kept in the following conditions: I - 24 weeks at 0-1°C, II - 15 weeks at 0-1°C, then 9 weeks at 18-20°C, III - 11 weeks at 0-1°C, then 13 weeks at 18-20°C, IV - 24 weeks at 18-20°C. The storage loss caused by complete drying up, sprouting into leaves and occurrence of disease symptoms were determined. The sets left over after evaluation of storage loss were planted in the field in order to determine bolting of onion. Cold storage (0-1°C) for 24 weeks reduced loss but stimulated bolting. In the case of Jetset F1, warm storage (18-20°C) for the last 9 weeks of the 24 weeks' experimental storage period practically eliminated bolting. The sets of Rawska required longer exposures of 18-20°C at the end of storage for suppressing of inflorescence development than Jetset F1. The smaller onion sets were kept the shorter the duration of warm storage required to reduce bolting. The longer onion sets were stored at 18-20°C the greater storage loss were noted.

Abstract (sommario):
The non-linear dynamical property inside jets produced in high energy collisions are studied using Jetset 7.4 and Herwig 5.9 Monte Carlo generators. A scale, the jet-production scale, is found. The jets produced with this scale are the most consistent with QCD jet-production dynamics and will provide the most reliable dynamical information about their mother-partons.

Abstract (sommario):
In March 1999, a foliar bacterial disease was observed in a commercial crop of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cv. Jetset in Gumlu in northern Queensland, Australia. Initial symptoms consisted of angular, chlorotic, water-soaked lesions that later dried to necrotic areas of light brown, dead tissue. White bacterial ooze was commonly found on the undersides of young water-soaked lesions. Lesions were delimited by veins and distributed uniformly over leaf surfaces, and more than 20% of the crop was affected. No symptoms were observed on plant stems or fruits. Bacterial streaming from the edges of freshly cut young lesions was clearly visible in a droplet of water under ×100 magnification in the laboratory. Isolations were made from young lesions on King's medium B (1). A slow-growing, white, gram-negative, nonfluorescent bacterium was consistently isolated. Three isolates of the bacterium were identified, using the Biolog software program (Biolog, Hayward CA), and in each instance, the bacterium was confirmed as Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli, with a similarity of >0.80. Koch's postulates were completed with 8-day-old glasshouse-grown cucumber (cv. Jetset) seedlings. Seedlings were misted until runoff with a bacterial suspension of 3 × 108 CFU/ml and enclosed in plastic bags for ≈30 h at 22°C. Water-soaked lesions were observed on cucumber cotyledons 4 days after inoculation. This is the first report of A. avenae subsp. citrulli as a pathogen of cucumber. Reference: (1) E. O. King et al. Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The hardness properties of quark- and gluon-jets produced by different flavor quarks are compared in 3-jet events of e+e- collision generated with Monte Carlo Simulation Jetset 7.4 generator at [Formula: see text]. The 3-jet events are obtained using the Durham algorithm and the quark- and gluon-jets are identified by angular-method. The average values of transverse momentum 〈pt〉, multiplicity 〈N〉 and rapidity 〈y〉 versus hardness for quark- and gluon-jets of different flavors are compared. It turns out that the distributions of 〈pt〉, 〈N〉 and 〈y〉 versus hardness of quark-jets are different to their flavors, while those of the gluon-jets are insensitive to the flavors. On the other hand, the 〈pt〉 and 〈N〉 of quark- and gluon-jets are strong positive correlated with hardness, but the 〈y〉 of those are negatively correlated with hardness.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The structure and origin of mesoscale jets and associated potential vorticity (PV) dipoles in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) in tropical cyclones (TCs) are investigated. UTLS PV dipole/jetlets, which occurred in Talas (2011), Edouard (2014), and Ita (2014), are simulated with the University of Wisconsin Nonhydrostatic Modeling System (UWNMS). PV dipoles are confined to the UTLS, where the jetlets oppose the ambient anticyclonic flow. They form ~100–250 km from the eye in convective asymmetries and are characterized by surges of air that accelerate in the updraft, overshoot, and extend radially outward. In these cases, the outflow jet merges with the subtropical westerly jet. Analysis of the structure of UTLS PV dipole/jetlets led to a new physical interpretation for their formation, based on the difference in momentum between the updraft and air in the UTLS: the convective momentum transport hypothesis. This view is complementary to the vorticity tilting hypothesis. A jetlet will form whenever an updraft carries horizontal winds to a level with different wind. Schematic diagrams show how to predict jetlet orientation based on horizontal speeds in the updraft and UTLS ambient air. In TCs, horizontal winds in the updraft are cyclonic, so a UTLS jetlet will be cyclonic and oppose the ambient flow. Each jetlet creates an anticyclonic, inertially unstable PV member, which lies radially outward. Estimates of terms in the PV conservation equation support the hypothesis that the dipoles arise from the curl of shear stress. Convective asymmetries associated with PV dipole/jetlets can significantly modify TC evolution by local thermodynamic acceleration.

Abstract (sommario):
Data quality is a recognized problem for high-throughput genomics platforms, as evinced by the proliferation of methods attempting to filter out lower quality data points. Different filtering methods lead to discordant results, raising the question, which methods are best? Astonishingly, little computational support is offered to analysts to decide which filtering methods are optimal for the research question at hand. To evaluate them, we begin with a pair of expression data sets, transcriptomic and proteomic, on the same samples. The pair of data sets form a test-bed for the evaluation. Identifier mapping between the data sets creates a collection of feature pairs, with correlations calculated for each pair. To evaluate a filtering strategy, we estimate posterior probabilities for the correctness of probesets accepted by the method. An analyst can set expected utilities that represent the trade-off between the quality and quantity of accepted features. We tested nine published probeset filtering methods and combination strategies. We used two test-beds from cancer studies providing transcriptomic and proteomic data. For reasonable utility settings, the Jetset filtering method was optimal for probeset filtering on both test-beds, even though both assay platforms were different. Further intersection with a second filtering method was indicated on one test-bed but not the other.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe long-term success of weed management programs requires that all crops in a rotation receive satisfactory weed control. Band sowing with inter-band hoeing has been proposed as an innovative weed management strategy for grain crops. In the band-sowing system, crops are sown in a broadcast pattern within a band of some chosen width (here we selected 12.7 cm); weeds between bands are controlled with inter-band hoeing, with or without so-called “blind cultivation,” for example, tine harrowing. Alteration of the crop spatial arrangement from typical single-line rows to a more evenly distributed pattern aims to enhance interspecific competition while reducing intraspecific competition. Field experiments, conducted in Maine in 2016 and 2017, compared band sowing with inter-band hoeing to the region’s standard practice of planting in 16.5-cm rows and tine harrowing in four test crops: spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ‘Glenn’), oat (Avena sativa L. ‘Colt’), field pea (Pisum sativum L. ‘Jetset’), and flax (Linum usitatissimum L. ‘Prairie Thunder’). Band sowing improved weed control relative to the standard practice, especially in crops with greater competitive ability (wheat and oat). Despite improved weed control, in most cases, yields were unaffected by treatment. While band sowing with hoeing provided improved weed control in multiple crops, further study is warranted to optimize seeding rate, band width, and inter-band width to improve crop yields.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Energy equipartition and the energy budget in the jet are important issues for the radiation mechanism of blazars. Early work predominantly concentrated on flat-spectrum radio quasars and a limited number of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects. In this paper, we compile 348 high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs) based on the catalog of active galactic nuclei (4LAC-DR3) from Fermi-LAT, and employ JetSet to fit the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these HBLs in the framework of the one-zone lepton model. We aim to determine whether the energy budget is reasonable and whether energy equipartition is satisfied in HBLs. The results of the statistical analysis suggest that: (1) SEDs of HBLs can be reproduced well by using the one-zone lepton model; however, it cannot achieve energy equalization, and the relativistic electron energy density is far greater than the magnetic field energy density, U e ≳ 100U B ; (2) the majority of HBLs are located in the t cool < t dyn region (where the horizontal coordinate represents the jet power of electrons, while the ordinate indicates the ratio of the dynamic timescale to the cooling timescale), and the jet kinetic power of HBLs is greater than the jet power of radiation; there is a very low radiation efficiency, we deduce that HBLs may have optically thin advection-dominated accretion flows; (3) log ϵ B of HBLs is less than zero, which indicates that the jet kinetic power of HBLs is not affected by Poynting flux; (4) the relationships U e > U Syn ∼ U B , L e ∼ L p > L B ∼ L rad, and log ϵ e > 0.5 are established. These relations indicate that most of the energy of HBLs is stored in the population of low-energy electrons.

Abstract (sommario):
A primary criticism of organic agriculture is its lower yield and nutritional quality compared to conventional systems. Nutritionally, dry pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a rich source of low digestible carbohydrates, protein, and micronutrients. This study aimed to evaluate dry pea cultivars and advanced breeding lines using on-farm field selections to inform the development of biofortified organic cultivars with increased yield and nutritional quality. A total of 44 dry pea entries were grown in two USDA-certified organic on-farm locations in South Carolina (SC), United States of America (USA) for two years. Seed yield and protein for dry pea ranged from 61 to 3833 kg ha-1 and 12.6 to 34.2 g/100 g, respectively, with low heritability estimates. Total prebiotic carbohydrate concentration ranged from 14.7 to 26.6 g/100 g. A 100-g serving of organic dry pea provides 73.5 to 133% of the recommended daily allowance (%RDA) of prebiotic carbohydrates. Heritability estimates for individual prebiotic carbohydrates ranged from 0.27 to 0.82. Organic dry peas are rich in minerals [iron (Fe): 1.9–26.2 mg/100 g; zinc (Zn): 1.1–7.5 mg/100 g] and have low to moderate concentrations of phytic acid (PA:18.8–516 mg/100 g). The significant cultivar, location, and year effects were evident for grain yield, thousand seed weight (1000-seed weight), and protein, but results for other nutritional traits varied with genotype, environment, and interactions. “AAC Carver,” “Jetset,” and “Mystique” were the best-adapted cultivars with high yield, and “CDC Striker,” “Fiddle,” and “Hampton” had the highest protein concentration. These cultivars are the best performing cultivars that should be incorporated into organic dry pea breeding programs to develop cultivars suitable for organic production. In conclusion, organic dry pea has potential as a winter cash crop in southern climates. Still, it will require selecting diverse genetic material and location sourcing to develop improved cultivars with a higher yield, disease resistance, and nutritional quality.

Abstract (sommario):
Context. Multi-wavelength light curves in long-term campaigns show that, for several blazars, the radio emission occurs with a significant delay with respect to the γ-ray band, with timescales ranging from weeks to years. Such observational evidence has long been a matter of debate, and is usually interpreted as a signature of the γ-ray emission originating upstream in the jet, with the emitting region becoming radio transparent at larger scales. Aims. In this paper, we show, by means of self-consistent numerical modelling, that the adiabatic expansion of a relativistic blob can explain these delays, reproducing lags compatible with the observed timescales. Methods. We use the JetSeT framework to reproduce the numerical modelling of the radiative and accelerative processes, reproducing the temporal evolution of a single blob, from the initial flaring activity and the subsequent expansion. We follow the spectral evolution and the corresponding light curves, investigating the relations among the observed parameters, rise time, delay, and decay time, and we identify the link with physical parameters. Results. We find that, when adiabatic expansion is active, lags due to the shift of the synchrotron frequency occur. The corresponding time lags have an offset equal to the distance in time between the flaring onset and the beginning of the expansion, whilst the rising and decaying timescales depend on the velocity of the expansion and on the time required for the source to exhibit a synchrotron self-absorption frequency below the relevant radio spectral window. We derive an inter-band response function, embedding the aforementioned parameters, and we investigate the effects of the competitions between radiative and adiabatic cooling timescales on the response. We apply the response function to long-term radio and γ-ray light curves of Mrk 421, Mrk 501, and 3C 273, finding satisfactory agreement on the log-term behaviour, and we use a Monte Carlo Markov chain approach to estimate some relevant physical parameters. We discuss applications of the presented analysis to polarization measurements and to jet collimation profile kinematics. The collimation profiles observed in radio images are in agreement with the prediction from our model.

Abstract (sommario):
Dry pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a cool-season food legume rich in protein (20–25%). With increasing health and ecosystem awareness, organic plant-based protein demand has increased; however, the protein quality of organic dry pea has not been well studied. This study determined the genetic variation of individual amino acids (AAs), total AAs (liberated), total protein, and in vitro protein digestibility of commercial dry pea cultivars grown in organic on-farm fields to inform the development of protein-biofortified cultivars. Twenty-five dry pea cultivars were grown in two USDA-certified organic on-farm locations in South Carolina (SC), USA, for two years (two locations in 2019 and one in 2020). The concentrations of most individual AAs (15 of 17) and the total AA concentration significantly varied with dry pea cultivar. In vitro protein digestibility was not affected by the cultivar. Seed total AA and protein for dry pea ranged from 11.8 to 22.2 and 12.6 to 27.6 g/100 g, respectively, with heritability estimates of 0.19 to 0.25. In vitro protein digestibility and protein digestibility corrected AA score (PDCAAS) ranged from 83 to 95% and 0.18 to 0.64, respectively. Heritability estimates for individual AAs ranged from 0.08 to 0.42; principal component (PCA) analysis showed five significant AA clusters. Cultivar Fiddle had significantly higher total AA (19.6 g/100 g) and digestibility (88.5%) than all other cultivars. CDC Amarillo and Jetset were significantly higher in cystine (Cys), and CDC Inca and CDC Striker were significantly higher in methionine (Met) than other cultivars; CDC Spectrum was the best option in terms of high levels of both Cys and Met. Lysine (Lys) concentration did not vary with cultivar. A 100 g serving of organic dry pea provides a significant portion of the recommended daily allowance of six essential AAs (14–189%) and daily protein (22–48%) for an average adult weighing 72 kg. Overall, this study shows organic dry pea has excellent protein quality, significant amounts of sulfur-containing AAs and Lys, and good protein digestibility, and thus has good potential for future plant-based food production. Further genetic studies are warranted with genetically diverse panels to identify candidate genes and target parents to develop nutritionally superior cultivars for organic protein production.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. In the present study, the monthly statistical characteristics of jetlet and tropopause in relation to the development of thunderstorms over Cyprus are examined. For the needs of the study the 12:00 UTC radiosonde data obtained from the Athalassa station (33.4° E, 35.1° N) for an 11-year period, from 1997 till 2007, were employed. On the basis of this dataset, the height and the temperature of the tropopause, as well as the height, wind direction and speed of the jetlet were estimated. Additionally, the days in the above period with observed thunderstorms were selected and the aforementioned characteristics of the jetlet and tropopause were noted. The two data sets were subsequently contrasted in an attempt to identify possible relations between thunderstorm development, on the one hand, and tropopause and jetlet characteristics, on the other hand.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract We present EUV solar observations showing evidence for omnipresent jetting activity driven by small-scale magnetic reconnection at the base of the solar corona. We argue that the physical mechanism that heats and drives the solar wind at its source is ubiquitous magnetic reconnection in the form of small-scale jetting activity (a.k.a. jetlets). This jetting activity, like the solar wind and the heating of the coronal plasma, is ubiquitous regardless of the solar cycle phase. Each event arises from small-scale reconnection of opposite-polarity magnetic fields producing a short-lived jet of hot plasma and Alfvén waves into the corona. The discrete nature of these jetlet events leads to intermittent outflows from the corona, which homogenize as they propagate away from the Sun and form the solar wind. This discovery establishes the importance of small-scale magnetic reconnection in solar and stellar atmospheres in understanding ubiquitous phenomena such as coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. Based on previous analyses linking the switchbacks to the magnetic network, we also argue that these new observations might provide the link between the magnetic activity at the base of the corona and the switchback solar wind phenomenon. These new observations need to be put in the bigger picture of the role of magnetic reconnection and the diverse form of jetting in the solar atmosphere.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Most of the electromagnetic output of blazars (BL Lac objects and Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars) comes out in the γ–ray band, making the Large Area Telescope [0.1–100 GeV] onboard the Fermi satellite and the Cherenkov telescopes crucial for gather crucial data and thus to understand their physics. These data are complemented by the observations of the Swift satellite in the X–ray and optical–UV bands, and by ground based optical and radio telescopes. This rich coverage of the spectrum allows a robust modelling, from which important trends start to emerge. In powerful sources we see the contribution of the accretion disk that, once modeled, give us the black hole mass and the accretion rate. Even when not directly visible, the disk luminosity can be derived through the broad emission lines. Therefore we start to know the jet power, the disk luminosity, and the black hole mass, 3 crucial ingredients if we want to draw a general scenario. At the start, jets are believed to be magnetically dominated. And yet, on the scale where they emit most of their luminosity, their power is already in the form of kinetic energy of particles. Relativistic jets are formed for a very broad range of the disk luminosity, from close to Eddington down to at least 10-4 Eddington. Their power correlates with the accretion rate, and can be even more powerful than the accretion disk luminosity.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, the comparison of the power requirements during real-time processing of video sequences in embedded systems was investigated. During the experimental tests, four modules were tested: Raspberry Pi 4B, NVIDIA Jetson Nano, NVIDIA Jetson Xavier AGX, and NVIDIA Jetson Orin AGX. The processing speed and energy consumption have been checked, depending on input frame size resolution and the particular power mode. Two vision algorithms for detecting lines located in airport areas were tested. The results show that the power modes of the NVIDIA Jetson modules have sufficient computing resources to effectively detect lines based on the camera image, such as Jetson Xavier in mode MAXN or Jetson Orin in mode MAXN, with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and a power consumption of about 19 W for 24 FPS for both algorithms tested.
