Schneider, Michael A. "Mr. Moto: Improbable International Man of Mystery". Journal of American-East Asian Relations 22, n. 1 (10 aprile 2015): 7–16. http://dx.doi.org/10.1163/18765610-02201002.

Abstract (sommario):
Mr. Moto, a fictional Japanese detective, achieved mass popularity through a series of 1930s films starring Peter Lorre. Moto was the creation of successful writer John P. Marquand (1893–1960), whose novels depicted a Japanese international spy quite different from the genial Mr. Moto of film. Revisiting the original Mr. Moto novels illuminates a Japanese character who rationalized Japan’s 1930s continental expansionism in ways that might have been acceptable to many Americans. Although Marquand intended to present Mr. Moto as a “moderate” and reasonable Japanese agent and generally present East Asians in a positive light, it is difficult to see the novels as doing anything more than buttressing prevailing racial and ethnic stereotypes.

Abstract (sommario):
Ogawa Yoko as a Japanese novelist mostly features the life of contemporary Japanese society in her novels. One that stands out from her works is the image of the Japanese family structure. Ogawa outlines the Japanese family structure in contrast to the Japanese family structure in actual society, as in the novel Kifunjin A No Sosei, Hakase No Aishita Suushiki, and Miina No Koushin. These three novels depict Japanese family structure more complex than her other novels. How Ogawa described Japanese family structure in the three novels is the issue on this article. This article is a literature study; data were collected from the three novels and analyzed using sociological literature approach and the concept of Japanese traditional family known as ie system. This paper shows that there was an implementation of the ie system in the three novels yet it was only a part of the ie concept.

Abstract (sommario):
Southeast Asia as depicted in Japanese detective novels was not only a source of exotic mysteries, but also a space where complex histories and cultures were intertwined. One example is “Kaikyo Tenchikai”, written by Oguri Mushitaro, who stayed in Murray from 1941 to 1942. One feature of this work is that the people who solve the novel’s mystery are Iinuma, an apprentice doctor, and Kogure, a detective novelist and a member of the press. Their relationship is reminiscent of the one between Holmes and Watson, but the detective and the narrator are not clearly distinct, and in fact their voices gradually overlap. They are more like characters in spy novels than in detective novels. Another example of the genre is Yuki Shoji’s “Gomez no na ha Gomez”, in which a former Japanese soldier who assimilated into Vietnam appears, having not returned to Japan after the end of the war. Here, the theme of being a double agent overlaps with that of national betrayal. In one more example, a Japanese holdout from the end of the war living in Asia also appears in Matsumoto Seicho’s “Atsui Kinu”. Ultimately, the divergence between the ideal of the liberation of Asia, which was the cause of the Pacific War, and the reality brought about by the Japanese military invasion, casts a complex shadow over mysteries set in Southeast Asia.

Abstract (sommario):
The Japanese occupation government in the Indonesia carried out propaganda using various media, including literature. The propaganda often depicts the condition of women at that time. This study examines the picture of women in the Japanese occupation that has been reflected in four novels published in two eras: during and after the Japanese occupation. Novels published during the Japanese occupation were Palawidja by Karim Halim and Cinta Tanah Air by Nur Sutan Iskandar. Meanwhile, the novels published after the Japanese occupation were Dan Perang pun Usai by Ismail Marahimin and Kembang Jepun by Remy Sylado. The novels were approached by the sociology of literature by Alan Swingewood and Diana Laurenson. The research prove that the four novels have a different picture of women in the Japanese occupation. Women in novels written during the Japanese occupation are described as having a fate full of suffering, for example, in the novels Kembang Jepun and Dan Perang pun Usai. Meanwhile, women in novels written after the Japanese occupation are described as having a luckier fate, as seen in Palawidja and Cinta Tanah Air. These depictions came to differences in the activities, authorship background, and time interval of the writing of the four authors.

YU, Jaejin. "The Popularity of Japanese Mystery Novels in South Korea :The Traslation Status from1945 to the 2010s". Border Crossings: The Journal of Japanese-Language Literature Studies 13, n. 1 (30 dicembre 2021): 39–51. http://dx.doi.org/10.22628/bcjjl.2021.13.1.39.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper gives an overview of the reception of translated Japanese detective novels in South Korea from 1945 to 2021. The resulting analysis of the impact and characteristics of these translations, in the context of changes in Korean publishing and in popular culture, explains the popularity of Japanese detective novels in South Korea, and the significance of the still-current Japanese detective novel boom. Previously I have analyzed the reception of translated Japanese detective novels in South Korea from 1945 to 2009, so in this article, I will continue this analysis for the period up to 2021.The translation and publication of Japanese detective novels in South Korea began in 1961, and the number of such texts increased little by little every year until the end of the 20th century. Then, in the 2000s, the number of translations increased sharply, and since the beginning of the 2010s, detective novels have been translated and published at nearly three times the rate as was previously the case. The popularity of Japanese detective novels in South Korea has been influenced by the prevailing circumstances in the publishing world and by political and social conditions in South Korea. In addition, detective novels with a social dimension were popular from the 1960s to the 1980s, but since 1990 when they began to make an impact on mass consumer culture, more diverse detective novels and those with lighter themes have come to the fore. Finally, the unprecedented Japanese detective novel boom Korea is experiencing is due to the appearance of star writers such as Keigo Higashino and Miyuki Miyabe. This boom seems to have cultivated a more refined sense in Korean readers of the aesthetics of detective novels, and it has also been naturally influenced by the mystery narrative form in Korean popular culture.

Abstract (sommario):
This research aims at scrutinizing two novels, Palawidja by Karim Halim dan Kembang Jepun by Remy Sylado, by using the theory of literary sosiology to observe the point of views of each authors. Obviosly, they have different pictures on the situation in Indonesia during the Japanese occupation. Remy Sylado, who wrote after the Japanese occupation, gives a more objective picture in his novels than Karim Halim, who live and wrote novels during the Japanese occupation, does. Palawidja is biased due to the fact that Karim Halim worked for Balai Pustaka, a publishing company under the control of the Japanese authority. Therefore, he supported the Japanese propaganda and could not give an objective picture of the condition in Indonesia at the time.

Jiang, Zhulin, e Lu Dai. "Further Interpretation of the Anti War Consciousness in Ryunosuke Akutagawa's "General"". Journal of Education and Educational Research 5, n. 2 (28 agosto 2023): 50–52. http://dx.doi.org/10.54097/jeer.v5i2.12247.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Akutagawa Ryunosuke Award, set in honor of the first-class Japanese literary master Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892-1927), is not only the top award in the Japanese Pure Literature Award, but also the most authoritative one in the Japanese literary field. This indicates the position of Ryunosuke Akutagawa in the history of Japanese literature. Studying Ryunosuke Akutagawa's war novels undoubtedly has inspiring meaning for us to understand Japan's war novels. Therefore, based on previous studies, the researcher discusses "General", the first masterpiece in a series of works criticizing Japan's aggressive war after Akutagawa went to China. On the basis of the overall dynamic research method currently advocated, this paper attempts to explore the anti-war consciousness in "General" through detailed reading of the text. The main body of this article is divided into three parts. The first part sorts out the background of "General", summarizes the entire whole text and the main idea. The second part is to study the Japanese during the war. Japanese soldiers strongly admire the Mikado, and Japan has a strict hierarchical system, which are all exploited by extreme militarists. The third part analyzes the anti war consciousness and the foolish loyalty of Japanese soldiers in four independent and meaningful works, namely "The White Army", "Spy", "Performance on the Field", and "Father and Son".

Chen, Yao-yi. "A Comparative Study on the Image of Gifted scholar in the “The Story of the West Chamber” of China and Japan". Society for Chinese Humanities in Korea 86 (30 aprile 2024): 169–81. http://dx.doi.org/10.35955/jch.2024.04.86.169.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The word “Gifted scholar” riginated from Chinese literature During the exchange of Chinese culture with East Asian countries, “Gifted scholar” was absorbed by Japan, which was influenced by Chinese culture, and became a synonym for the hero in Japanese romance novels. As an imitative work of the Chinese Yuan drama “The Romance of the West Chamber”, the Japanese Chinese-character novels “The Romance of Happy Couple ” has both similarities and differences with the Image of Gifted scholar in the Story of “The Romance of the West Chamber”. Based on text analysis, this paper will sort out the content about the image of the gifted scholar in the Chinese and Japanese “The Story of the West Chamber”, highlight the different aspects of the image of the gifted scholar in the two works, and focus on exploring the reasons for this difference. The Japanese writer Miki Aika was influenced by Chinese Confucian culture. The male protagonist in “The Romance of Happy Couple” inherited the image of talented scholar who combines talent, amorous feeling and appearance from “The Romance of the West Chamber”. On the other hand, due to the cultural characteristics of the Japanese nation and the development of the Meiji Restoration, the image of the gifted scholar in Japan's “The Story of the West Chamber” has changed again. By examining and comparing the image of the gifted scholar in Chinese and Japanese “The Story of the West Chamber”, this paper explains that although the external image of the hero in the <The Romance of Happy Couple> is similar to that of the Chinese gifted scholar, his inner core characteristics still contain Japan’s national character and contemporaneity.

LEE, SOOK. "Narrative Representations and the Power of Fantasy in Testimony Literature: Focused on Novels on the ‘Comfort Women’ of the Japanese Military". Korean Society of Culture and Convergence 44, n. 10 (31 ottobre 2022): 337–51. http://dx.doi.org/10.33645/cnc.2022.10.44.10.337.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Previous research on testimony literature including novels that reproduce the ‘comfort women’ of the Japanese military has tended to rely on the aesthetics of conventional realism. The novels on the ‘comfort women’ of the Japanese military this study focuses on, however, reveal different aspects from the previous reproduction of reality like the imitation of reality. This study intensively analyzes noteworthy texts out of the works that have been released up to now after the 1980’s, for instance, Yun Jeong-mo, Nora Okja Keller, Go Hye-jeong, and Kim Sum’s novels. The novels on the ‘comfort women’ of the Japanese military as testimony literature employ the technique of ‘fantasy’ in order to obtain reality and contain aesthetic autonomy in them. Also, such borrowing of ‘fantasy’ shows paradoxically that pain is indescribable. Moreover, those novels not just remaining in the representation of historical pain seek to heal trauma caused by pain from an ecofeminist perspective and pursue the narrative of salvation for the sake of survival.

Abstract (sommario):
This article presents initial findings about the history of the publication of serialized novels in Japanese-language newspapers published in North and South America. An under-studied publishing venue for literature to begin with, even less is known about the serialization of novels in these diasporic communities despite them being the most widely circulated fiction. Focusing on what can be reconstructed of the history of these works and their publication, this study focuses on five newspapers and their serialized novels during the 1930s, with a particular focus on the novel Constellations Ablaze by Ozaki Shirō and the lesser-known author Nakagawa Amenosuke. This preliminary survey suggests an industry that navigated international copyright law, reader’s tastes, and the interconnection of different local readerships.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This study demonstrates that two types of language ideologies (linguistic nationalism and feminine language normativity) influence how Japanese contemporary novels represent non-Japanese characters’ speech. It investigates the role of gender and observes that novelists only infrequently assign highly gendered utterance-final forms to non-Japanese characters when they speak in Japanese. This tendency is more salient among the representations of male non-Japanese characters. Masculine expressions seem to belong to a set of linguistic resources that are considered available only to the Japanese. This exclusivism, i.e., linguistic nationalism, might explain the lack of highly masculine forms among non-Japanese characters in novels. As for the relatively frequent assignment of gendered language for female characters, the normativity of feminine language makes it part of the basic language of all female speakers including non-Japanese individuals. In addition, feminine expressions are not as strongly associated with authenticity as masculine expressions.

Abstract (sommario):
Murakami Ryū and Japan’s Lost Decad While the Japanese writer Murakami Ryūs earlier works are concerned with shock and boredom, his works from the 1990’s display an interest in apocalyptic fantasies in order to start society afresh. This article examines two of these novels – Popular Hits of the Showa Era (1994) and In the Miso Soup (1997) – and discusses this tendency in the context of Japan’s Lost Decade, the economic depression that began in the early 90’s and has continued into this millenium. Drawing upon Martin Heidegger’s notions of Das Man, anxiety and homeliness, the article discusses how the novels critique their contemporary society and how they frame possibilities for politics and for a new start.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the present study is to identify how different types of shops—a thrift shop and a convenience store—are represented in two Japanese novels that illustrate various facets of contemporary society: Kawakami Hiromi’s (b. 1958) Furudōgu Nakano shōten (The Nakano Thrift Shop, 2005) and Murata Sayaka’s (b. 1979) Konbini ningen (Convenience Store Woman, 2016). What are the narratives that define such spaces of monetary transit? How do these writers weave a specific image of the shop in their prose? And what role does the shop play in these novels that present aspects of contemporaneity – for example, on the one hand, social phobia in the case of Kawakami’s male character Takeo, and on the other hand, alienation and the pressure to conform to society’s norms in the case of Murata’s female protagonist Keiko? In this article I analyze how these commercial spaces are depicted as urban hideaways in Kawakami Hiromi’s The Nakano Thrift Shop and Murata Sayaka’s Convenience Store Woman. These places are characterized not only by the financial dimension, but by an emotional one as well, namely the possibility of building new relationships with other people (for instance, the staff members, their relatives, and the customers) and a special bond with one’s workplace.

Abstract (sommario):
Since the early 1990s literary works that critics would later call “border-crossing literature” (<i>ekkyō bungaku</i>) have emerged on the Japanese literary scene. These works, which are primarily characterized by being written in Japanese by non-native authors, have to-date tended to challenge the concept of “Japanese literature”. A number of studies have explored this very issue in taking into account some similarity with literary genres such as the “Japanese literature of Korean residents in Japan” (<i>Zainichi chōsenjin bungaku</i>). It should be noted, however, that today’s border-crossing writers use Japanese language for personal—or even esthetic—reason unlike postcolonial writers who could not have any other option than writing in their colonizer’s language. In that respect, what seems necessary today is also an analysis that takes a closer look at how today’s border-crossing writers write in Japanese language, namely their writing style. This paper adopts this approach in dealing with Rībi Hideo’s novels, with a particular focus on the fact that most of them feature the theme of a form of travel which is not characterized by the idea of free-flowing movement. By analyzing some relevant examples, I show how this American author develops his original writing style, which is central to his narratives.

Kata kunci: zaman penjajahan Jepun; novel zaman penjajahan Jepun; strukturalisme genetik; pandangan dunia antipenjajah ABSTRACT After the Japanese colonial period, realism novels that portrayed the cruelty of the Japanese colonial began to appear. This study relates to the depiction of the era of Japanese Occupation in selected novels. The novels are “Sandera, Rindu Aroma Padi Bunting, Patah Sayap Terbang Jua and Tembok Tidak Tinggi”. The research problem of this study revolves around identifying the genetic relationship between the novels and the social context of the Japanese Occupation. This study aims to assess worldviews as collective subject responses in the selected novels. Employing literary research and textual analysis methods, this study applies a literary sociology approach, specifically studying worldviews from the perspective of genetic structuralism. Worldview represents a shared emotional structure within specific groups. The analysis that was conducted managed to achieve the objectives of this study. The findings reveal that nationalists fought against the Japanese Occupation, and worldviews served as a unifying force for actions against the Japanese. Through this study, the true portrayal of the Japanese Occupation is exposed through the perspectives of nationalists and communists, with two contrasting worldviews: the moderate anti-colonialism worldview and the radical anti-colonialism worldview. In conclusion, the anti-colonial groups fought for the independence and prosperity of their nation. This social context provides a dialectical and anti-dialectical structure to the four selected works, indicating that novels and social conditions mutually influence each other in a genetic manner. Further research recommendations can be made on the Malay authors’ post-war attitude towards novels about colonialism. Such further studies may expand the understanding of modern Malay literary history. Comparative studies can also be carried out between literary works such as wartime poetry and wartime short stories. Each literary genre has its aesthetic form. The attitude of the author who follows the literary genre can also contribute to enriching the study of Malay literature. Keywords: Japanese colonial era; novels on Japanese occupation; genetic structuralism anticolonialism worldview

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In literary works, the dialogue is expressed by direct speech construction. The direct speech construction consists of author’s words (AW) and character’s words (CW). The predicate verbs of AW in the dialogue form include not only verbs indicating speech (TVS) but also verbs that do not denote speech (TVN). The dialogue forms are divided into four types according to the positional combinations of AW and CW. Type A: AW is in preposition to CW; Type B: AW is in postposition to CW; Type C: AW is in interposition to CW; Type D: AW includes CW. Previous studies have not paid sufficient attention to the relationship between TVN and the dialogue forms. This paper proposes two analysis criteria: 1) frequency of the 4 types indicated above and frequency of TVN, 2) frequency of the 4 types and frequency of TVN depending on semantics. Here, we study the material selected from Russian novels and Japanese novels of the second half of the 19th – second half of the 20th century. Our analysis has revealed the following: 1) in Russian novels, TVN appears intensively in type C, while in Japanese novels TVN does not appear disproportionately in a specific type of the dialogue form while the use of TVN depends on the most frequently used dialogue form. 2) TVNs meaning ‘facial expression’ and ‘gesture’ are frequently used in all dialogue forms in Russian and Japanese novels. Theoretically, TVN and type C are closely related, but it seems that TVN appears differently in type C due to the difference in recognition of type C between Russian and Japanese.

In particular, the sheep also participates in the process of magical narration and creates many unexpected meanings for readers. In summarize, the Sheep have contributed significantly to increase the ranks of meanings in the writer’s narration, and at the same time affirm Japanese cultural identity in Murakami’s narration.

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines four decades of anti-Japanese paranoia in popular American media, particularly in California, from the early 1900s to the eve of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. It illustrates the overlooked influence that this hysteria had in shaping American perceptions of Japanese immigrants in Baja California, Mexico, and the consequences of those views for these borderlands prior to 1941. Drawing on California and U.S. national newspapers, contemporary novels, and U.S. government records, the article shows that the presence of Japanese immigrants in Baja California was for decades used as a pretense by American interest groups seeking to annex the peninsula. Beneath these alleged security concerns were strong economic interests, among which obtaining sole control over the Colorado River figured prominently. Decades of annexation calls based on a supposed Japanese threat, this article argues, influenced the Mexican government's 1942 decision to place its citizens of Japanese descent in internment camps.

Kim, Yejin. "The Emergence of Adapted Japanese Novels and the Evolution of Yi Doyeong’s Cover Images". Modern Bibiography Review Society 29 (30 giugno 2024): 565–99. http://dx.doi.org/10.56640/mbr.2024.29.01.

Abstract (sommario):
Yi Doyeong’s cover images emerged in tandem with the rise of new novels in the late 1900s, gaining prominence in the 1910s. Initially serving descriptive purposes by depicting story introductions and main characters, they drew inspiration from Joseon Dynasty printmaking traditions. However, Yi’s approach evolved significantly with the commercialization of novels, exemplified by his impactful designs for Haingrakdo (Dongyangseowon, 1912) and Okhogiyeon (Bogeupseogwan, 1912). These covers introduced symbolic imagery and dramatic scenes, enhancing reader engagement. Furthermore, Yi’s cover designs underwent further innovation with the adaptation of Japanese novels into Korean literature, such as Tokutomi Roka’s Hototogisu and Kikuchi Yuho’s Onogatsumi. Noteworthy examples include Dugyeonseong (Bogeupseogwan, 1912), an adaptation of Hototogisu, Ssangokru (Bogeupseogwan, 1914), an adaptation of Onogatsumi, and Okjoonghwa (Bogeupseogwan, 1913), inspired by Cho Jung-hwan’s Bulgyeogui, the translated novel of Hototogisu. These covers revolutionized novel design by integrating elements from original Japanese novels, imagery from Subsequent cover images such as Chaebonggambyeolgok (Pakmunseogwan, 1914) and Okjunggain (Singuseorim, 1914) continued to innovate, embracing a more modern book design aesthetic characterized by simplicity, symbolic iconography, and metaphorical imagery.

Abstract (sommario):
From the 1910s to the early 1920s Xu Zhuodai translated many fairy tales from around the world and Western novels into Chinese, via Japanese translations. His “World Fairy Tales” series, based on the “Otogibanashi” series by Iwaya Sazanami, were integral to the development of the Zhonghua Book Company, and represented an important milestone in China’s initial evolution of children’s literature. His translations of Western prose texts, including short stories by world-renowned authors such as Tolstoy, Maupassant, and Mark Twain, as well as long detective novels by the popular French writers Maurice Leblanc and Fortuné du Boisgobey, were based on Japanese translations such as those in “Various Comic Novels” by Sasaki Kuni. These translations of fairy tales and other texts reflect Xu Zhuodai’s concern for education and his love of humorous literature. How the translation of foreign literature influenced Xu Zhuodai’s literary output is a topic worth exploring in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractMany novels, poems, and academic works produced in the last decades of Qing China were characterized by a structure of North–South dichotomy. While existing studies have investigated the root of this narrative structure in Chinese traditions, this article tries to uncover Japan's lesser-known role in the revitalization of traditional discourses. It first discusses how Japanese intellectuals, such as Shiga Shigetaka and Naitō Konan, reconfigured Chinese discourses on the North–South dichotomy as theories to assert Japan's superiority over China. It goes on to examine how Liang Qichao appropriated Japanese theories to mobilize southern Chinese to participate in state politics. It then explores how Chinese revolutionary students in Japan exploited Japanese intellectuals’ and Liang's discourses to promote a cross-provincial consciousness by representing China as a river-based region writ large. Lastly, it reveals how the restructured discourses on the North–South dichotomy were manipulated by revolutionaries after they flowed back to China.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study examined the relationship between reading literary novels and generating predictive inferences by analyzing a corpus of Japanese novels. Latent semantic analysis (LSA) was used to capture the statistical structure of the corpus. Then, the authors asked 74 Japanese college students to generate predictive inferences (e.g., “The newspaper burned”) in response to Japanese event sentences (e.g., “A newspaper fell into a bonfire”) and obtained more than 5,000 predicted events. The analysis showed a significant relationship between LSA similarity between the event sentences and the predicted events and frequency of the predicted events. This result suggests that exposure to literary works may help develop readers’ inference generation skills. In addition, two vector operation methods for sentence vector constructions from word vectors were compared: the “Average” method and the “Predication Algorithm” method (Kintsch, 2001). The results support the superiority of the Predication Algorithm method over the Average method.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This essay analyzes the Korean ‘relay translation’ of a Japanese adaptation of an English popular novel, entitled Chŏngbuwŏn (A virtuous woman’s resentment) in Korean, which was serialized in a daily newspaper in the mid-1910s. In tandem with the English source text and the Japanese translation, the meaning of the Korean translation was overdetermined by advertisements for the translation, the translator’s preface and footnotes, the readers’ responses, and the serialized novel’s physical coexistence with news carried in the same visual space. Using the prism of space (both tangible and imagined) as a pivot, I argue that the publication of serialized translations of novels in newspapers was situated on the cultural front-line that confronted and negotiated the diverse constructive forces that shaped modern Korean literature. This form of publication thus highlights the characteristics of literature as process, a view that reinstates such seemingly incomplete writings and translations as authentic and legitimate cultural (literary) constituents in modern Korea.

Abstract (sommario):
Along with mono no aware, miyabi is an aesthetic sentiment that dominates the Heian period. Miyabi describes the elegant attitude and behavior between man and man, as well as between man and nature. Originating from Shinto, miyabi has subsequently become a significant concept of Japanese aesthetics. Miyabi percolated through Japanese literature over eras and was recorded in the compositions of Y. Kawataba – a writer who dedicated his life and literary career to preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of Japan amidst the invasion of European and American civilization. In Y. Kawabata's works, miyabi was expressed through the passion of being able to care for, cherish and contemplate nature at its utmost richness; of finding in nature the joy and energy that healed the wounds of the soul; of appreciating objects-symbols for traditional culture; of love, generosity and tolerance towards people.

Abstract (sommario):
Jorge Amado, one of lhe most renowned brazilian writers, has in many of his novels focused thc afrobrazilian cult named candomblé, as it is practised in Bahia. We can say that a great deal of the more generalized ideas about bahian candomblé owe to Amado's novels their world widespread diffusion. But of course Amado's presentation of this cult is not a documentary, ethnographic report. His literary interpretation of candomblé symbolic system deserves anthopological consideration; particulary Amado's personal envolvement with lhe candomblé's world is to be studied from an anthropological point of view: though he defines himself as an atheist, Amado has taken a firm stand as a champion of the synchretim between catholic and afrobrazilian rites. This paper deals with Amado's treatment of catholic and afrobrazilian synchretism in his novels Tenda dos milagres and O sumiço da santa.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper focuses on how the narrative technique relates to mobility in Korean and Japanese literature. In general, pure, diaspora, and multicultural literature are heavily armed with ideological foundations and premised on being read on their own terms. However, what commonalities and differences in these thematic areas would arise if the motif of mobility supplanted other interpretive modes in the novels? This study analyzes how the mobile subject shaped the characteristics of each era through movement. It aims to refine the reading of modern novels aimed at establishing the modernity of the subject, diaspora novels in the Cold War era, and novels in the 2000s characterized by the theme of multiculturalism. Thus, this paper pointed out that the establishment of modern novels was triggered by movement and then examined how the lives of the diaspora in the Cold War era were narrated from the ethical point of view of mobility. Furthermore, the multicultural situation of globalism further amplified this phenomenon after the Cold War.

Abstract (sommario):
It is widely known that in his two novels, “At the Guidepost at the End of the Road” (1948) and “The Wall – The Crime of S. Karma” (1951), Abe Kobo depicted the main characters’ anguish after the Japanese defeat in the Asia-Pacific war as the result of “meaninglessness”. He came to this perspective on the basis of struggling with this feeling in his own life. This article analyzes the female Japanese characters, who form a contrast with the main male Japanese characters, in order to explore the question of why this sense of meaninglessness came about. In these novels, Japanese female characters are represented as those who cure the distress men feel because of the latter’s awareness of their responsibility for the aggressive war that took place, and because of their hedonic enjoyment of the liberated society after the war, which these male characters experience as “meaningful” as it allows them to not reflect on the war. The contrasting women characters reflect the social conditions at the time the story was written. Japanese women were not accused of war crimes, nor were they responsible for the subordinate female gender roles which persisted before the war. As a result, the female characters are free of the sense of meaninglessness, and they form a contrast with Japanese male characters who feel anguish at their awareness of their responsibility for the war, and their resultant sense of meaninglessness.
