Abstract (sommario):
Triggered by an aesthetic motif in James Cameron’s filmography, this thesis aims to describe light as a phenomenon shared beyond the human. An Annunciation unfolds in Cameron’s work, manifested through a luminous singularity: bioluminescence. Following the tracks of this uncanny light throughout several films, I consider the luminous event of the Annunciation as a modality of appearing in its bio-logical sense, i.e. in the sense of that which presides to the dynamic and inventiveness of the living in its relational dimensions. I name this dimension, a community of obsession. As far as light is concerned, this obsession is tuned to a photogenic appeal in the living, to which is tied photosensitivity in all its forms. Figurability in aesthetics likewise morphogenesis in biology, describe the multiple embodiments resulting from this bind. I name figurative ecology the trans-specific community thus created; I name figural ethology the observation method enabling to describe the obsessional dimension. I hence consider cinema in its phylogenetic perspective, in other words, throughout the long story of the interaction between life, light and forms. This thesis offers a different perspective on James Cameron’s work, as well as a biophotopolitical approach to multispecies ethnography and a new theory of communication based not on signal and noise, but on figures and grain

Abstract (sommario):
Gerald Dworkin's influential account of Personal Autonomy offers the following two conditions for autonomy: (i) Authenticity - the condition that one identify with one's beliefs, desires and values after a process of critical reflection, and (ii) Procedural Independence - the identification in (i) must not be "influenced in ways which make the process of identification in some way alien to the individual" (Dworkin 1989:61). I argue in this thesis that there are cases which fulfil both of Dworkin's conditions, yet are clearly not cases of autonomy. Specifically, I argue that we can best assess the adequacy of Dworkin's account of autonomy through literature, because it provides a unique medium for testing his account on the very terms he sets up for himself - ie. that autonomy apply to, and make sense of, persons leading lives of a certain quality. The examination of two novels - Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day and Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady - shows that Dworkin's explanation of identification and critical reflection is inadequate for capturing their role in autonomy and that he does not pay enough attention to the role of external factors in preventing or supporting autonomy. As an alternative, I offer the following two conditions for autonomy: (i) critical reflection of a certain kind - radical reflection, and (ii) the ability to translate the results of (i) into action - competence. The novels demonstrate that both conditions are dependent upon considerations of the content of one's beliefs, desires, values etc. Certain of these will prevent or hinder the achievement of autonomy because of their content, so autonomy must be understood in relation to substantial considerations, rather than in purely formal terms, as Dworkin argues.

Abstract (sommario):
Edward James (1907-84) is a little-known british poet whose late poetry, composed between 1939 and 1984, constitutes the subject of this study. Based on a critical approach to the poet's literary production, hardly available at present, and of a huge unpublished correspondance with many of the international avan-garde leading figures, this research mainly aims at defining the kind of relation between writing and representation thatin a poet usually thought of as surrealist. The thematic approach to the texts brings about what may be called the poetics of kitsch in which an inner trend suggests a singular relationship towards reality, thus providing an exciting alternative to post-modernity : from a political point of view, a personal version of anarchism; at a more individual level, a series of reinterpretations of raw perceptions and, dealing with a poet, a questioning of the artistic act, willingly or not inscribed in time

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
L'ecriture f. De james
As a preliminary, the analysis of three founding works of fiction in the fantastic genre ("rip van winkle ;" "the legend of sleepy hollow," by washington ir ving, 1819, and "peter rugg : the missing man" by william austin, 1824) allows us to ponder on the fantastic aspect of the origin of the universe and the origins of the fantastic genre in the americas, and the concurrence of history and the supernatural. The short stories of the american-henry james (1843-1916)-and the argentinian-cortazar (1914-1984)-illustrate that the fantastic genre allows the appearance of the unnameable in the text, and this process becomes the central, hidden plot of the text. Thes stories evoke a confrontation with the "being here" which is beyond words : the "thing" happens-obviously withou any reason-and this the text cannot capture, because of its uniqueness, because it is so real. The fantastic story paradoxically founded on the impossibility of its own achievement pushes realistic writing into its last strongholds there is no mystery within the fantastic story, there is the mystery of the fantastic story : the gross absence of the r and sensations that cannot be expressed in words. When this emptiness is felt as fulfilment, it is "the abyss," the "plunge into chaos" or the "spongy feeling" (cortazar), an "oceanic feeling" (r. Rolland, s. Freud). There is n absolute unifying-monothetic-theory of the fantastic genre, but a chaotic theory of the uniqueness, an idiographic theory. With james, the jungle tiger, "thing" that has been retrieved from the abyss, the ghost, would be part o some mystery : a ritual and dramatic change of the state of mind of the character resulting from an unformulable

Abstract (sommario):
This is a comparative study of the concepts of self as formulated by the psychologists William James (1842-1910) and B. F. Skinner (1904-1990). The source for James concept was the chapter The consciousness of self of his book The principles of psychology, from which I described the constituents of the empirical self, the authors reflection on the pure ego, and the feelings, emotions and actions of the self. In Skinners case, the sources were the section The individual as a whole of the book Science and human behavior, the chapter Thinking of the book Verbal behavior, and a few other articles; I discussed the concepts of self-control and thinking according to radical behaviorism in order to define the self as an organized system of responses. Then I translated James concept of self into references to contingencies of reinforcement: the material self in terms of phylogenesis and ontogenesis, the social self in terms of stimulus control, the spiritual self in terms of a repertoire shaped by the verbal community, and the pure ego in terms of the three levels of selection of human behavior. I proposed possible influences of James on Skinner, based on relations between their psychological theories: the conception of multiple selves, the rejection of the conscience as a substance, the affinity of radical empiricism and radical behaviorism, and the idea of evolution of culture. I reflected on the attitude of James and Skinner towards relating empirical data to general principles, on their classification of psychology among the natural sciences, and on the reasons for a supposed death of Jamesian psychology and radical behaviorism. Finally, I suggested some questions to further investigations.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation focuses on the study of the six novels published by James Arthur Baldwin and what is revealed in the texts about the economy of the paternal function, following a critical approach based upon the psychoanalytical writings and concepts of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan. The first part, dedicated to the study of the family romances and the dialectic of the Oedipus complex, explores the oedipal links which govern the family configurations in the various novels and focuses first on the desire of the mother then, on the position of the father and, eventually, deals with the feminine response to the Oedipus complex. In the second part, the perverse relation which the subject enjoys with desire and law is studied. The subject, captured by the imaginary, is alienated in relation to the other : the other in the mirror, the brother, the homosexual lover and the other race. . .

Abstract (sommario):
James Arthur Baldwin (1924- 1987) is one of the two major writers who have dared write about black gay men and from a black gay perspective. However, his fame as a racial spokesman and his insightful analyses of race relations in America tend to distract attention from the fact that he has been one of the most important homosexual writers of the twentieth century. Intolerance and homophobia among black and white Americans often led to a misinterpretation or misevaluation of James Baldwin's novels. James Baldwin was very courageous to come out as a black homosexual writer during the period of the Cold War and the Civil Rights movement. However, his awareness of racism and homophobia in the American society, and his difficult position of being a public figure and a spokesman for the Afro-Americans left its traces in his novels and influenced his novel writing career. The purpose of the present study is to show that out of intolerance, ignorance, and homophobia the evaluators of James Baldwin's novels often did him no justice. Baldwin through his novel writing developed a homosexual consciousness for himself. This struggle of coming-out was his personal struggle and it was marked by his burden of the doubly oppressed. I argue that Baldwin's search for an identity as a black homosexual writer is reflected in his writing. He constructed his identity through his writing. This study attempts to show that Baldwin's development of a homosexual identity took place in stages during his novel writing career. An analysis of the novels Go Tell It On the Mountain (1953), Giovanni's Room (1956), Another Country (1962), and Just Above My Head ( 1979) will demonstrate his movement from dealing with homosexuality as an underlying theme to using it as a tool to protest against any kinds of labels in the American society. Baldwin believed that discrimination cannot cease as long as the categorization of people through artificial constructs such as the "Negro" or the "homosexual" exists.

Abstract (sommario):
In this dissertation I attempt to explicate Jacques Derrida's strategy of deconstruction and, through a deconstructive reading of Clifford Geertz's interpretive anthropology and James Clifford's 'postmodern' anthropology respectively, to show its relevance to the discipline of anthropology in general. The following is a skeletal outline of how I set about this endeavour. In my Introductory chapter, I attempt to indicate the way in which the notion of logos or presence has dominated Western philosophy from its inception in ancient Greece up to and including the present day. As Derrlda utilizes it, the term •presence' has to do with the assumption of and desire for the existence of a self-certain and self-identical basis for all extant phenomena and is manifested in such notions as truth, meaning, God, self, concept and so on. Because it is always defined as self-sufficient and self-identical, wherever it operates, presence entails the suppression of difference and otherness. In Chapter Two, I offer an explication of Derrida's strategy for exposing and delimiting presence as it manifests itself through and throughout Western conceptuality, paying particular attention to his work on undecidability. Briefly, this has to do with arguing that concepts, as such, are always already originarlly doubled and hence, Aristotelian logic notwithstanding, are both possible (as effects of undecidabllity) and Impossible (as self-sufficient and self-identical ideas). This calls radically into question our assumptions about the nature of conceptuality and indicates the way in which these assumptions ensure the repression of difference and otherness. In Chapter Three, I look at the phenomenological (Husserl) and hermeneutic (esp. Heidegger, Gadamer, Ricoeur) background of contemporary interpretive and •postmodern' anthropology and, in so doing, attempt to show that it is premised upon an assumption of presence. In Chapter Four, I offer a deconstructive reading of certain works by Clifford Geertz and by James Clifford respectively, and attempt to show that their unrecognized dedication to an assumed notion of presence prevents them from seeing the repressive/oppressive nature of their chosen conceptuality. And, finally, in my concluding chapter, I argue that Geertzian interpretive anthropology and Cliffordian 'postmodern' anthropology are two sides of the same old coin and that, with respect to the latter's work, the term 'postmodern' is a misnomer. I further argue that Western conceptuality is, by definition and in principle, both repressive and oppressive and that, this being the case, anthropology must either reexamine and re-evaluate its most basic assumptions or, failing that, resign itself to perpetuating the inherited legacy of a ruthless metaphysics.

Abstract (sommario):
Joyce's u stands central in the movement of literary renovation which takes place after W. W. I. The historical process of u's reception was staggered over months by the serialized pre-publication of the novel in the U. S. And in England between 1918 and 1921 and then by the release of the novel in 1 volume in Paris in 1922. This process successively, and sometimes simultaneously, implied 3 cultural areas which are distinct but inter connected in parts. Through the study of u's reception, and subsequently of the French version (1929), mutation and a certain reluctance appear: these phenomena operate within the English, the American and the French fields, over a period which witnesses the emergence of a new aesthetics that was later on coined "modernism". The comparative bias of the doctorate aims at explaining the internationalization of literary relationships, as well as at understanding the gaps between the cultural fields taken into account. Eventually, complementary results can be drawn : according to the "aesthetics of reception" theory and to hermeneutics, the readings produced as a critical answer to u betray the difficulty to appropriate Joyce’s text, in spite of early interpretations and "critical orthodoxies" such as Pound's (1914-1922) and Larbaud's (19211922) ; in a more historical perspective, it appears that u played a vital part in the constitution of a modernist self-consciousness in the Anglo-Saxon literary world, while this function didn't operate as decisively in France, where the integration of Joyce’s novel

Abstract (sommario):
Hallucination was always the ghost story's elephant in the room. Even before the vogue for psychical research and spiritualism began to influence writers at the end of the nineteenth century, tales of horror and the supernatural, of ghosts and demons, had been haunted by the possibility of some grand deception by the senses. Edgar Allan Poe's stories were full of mad narrators, conscience-stricken criminals and sinners, and protagonists who doubted their very eyes and ears. Writers such as Dickens and Le Fanu continued this idea of the cheat of the senses. But what is certainly true is that, towards the end of the century, hallucination took on a new force and significance in ghostly and horror fiction. Now, its presence was not the dominion of a handful of experimental thinkers but the province of popular authors writing very different kinds of stories. The approaches had become many and diverse, from Arthur Machen's ambivalent interest in occultism to Vernon Lee's passion for art and antiquity. Henry James's The Turn of the Screw (1898) is the most famous text to pose a question that was, in fact, being asked by many writers of the time: reality or delusion? Other writers, too, were forcing their readers to assess whether the ghostly had its origins in some supernatural phenomenon from beyond the grave, or from some deception within our own minds. This thesis explores the many factors which contributed to this rise in the interest in hallucination and visionary experience, during the period 1880-1914. From the time when psychical research became hugely popular, up until the First World War often considered a watershed in the history of the ghost story and literature in general something happened to the ghost story and related fiction. Through a close analysis of stories and novels written by Robert Louis Stevenson, Vernon Lee, Henry James, Arthur Machen, and Oliver Onions, I attempt to find out what happened, and even more importantly why it happened at all.

Abstract (sommario):
[EN] The architecture of housing in the thinking and practice of James Gowan (1955-1965) James Gowan (Glasgow 1923 - London 2015) was one of the most important architects of the post-war generation, his work and architectural thought stretch a bridge between the early modernity of British Architects and contemporary architecture. However, his work has not been studied in depth. Throughout his career, Gowan showed a preference for residential buildings. In this thesis study we analyse designed housing projects during his first decade of architectural practice (1955-1965), which coincided with his partnership of seven years with James Stirling. From the analysis and the redrawing of Gowan's projects we catch glimpse his method of work and feelings towards housing.

Abstract (sommario):
The ecological movement in the psychology of perception, founded by James J. Gibson, hold that traditional approaches to perception are based upon certain fundamental mistakes. The chief one, ecological theorists claim, is that perceptual information pickup consists of the application of certain cognitive processes to sensory input which is not specific to features of organisms' environment. Gibson's fundamental claim is that perception does not require the processing of some form of sensory input. In this sense, the ecological approach is said to be a theory of direct perception. An important debate over the Gibsonian view concerns the question of whether or not perceptual information pickup without cognitive processing is a coherent notion. Among the more recent writers who claim that the ecological view will not work as it stands are Jerry A. Fodor and Zenon W. Pylyshyn. They claim, essentially, that Gibson's approach has no means for accounting for intentionality. Fodor and Pylyshyn are answered by four prominent Gibsonians who claim such criticisms are utterly baseless. These ecological theorists, Michael Turvey, Robert Shaw, Edward Reed, and William Mace endeavour to show how their approach can indeed account for intentionality. This debate between Fodor and Pylyshyn on the one hand, and Turvey, Shaw, Reed, arid Mace on the other is a perfect example of the kinds of misunderstandings that have arisen between Gibsonians and proponents of traditional view. In this thesis, I supply a detailed description of Gibson's model as it relates to the issue of how intentionality could survive perception without processing. Fodor and Pylyshyn's understanding and assessment of the Gibsonian position will then be examined. Although these defenders of traditional views have, some important concerns,.they also seem not to have a proper grasp of some Gibsonian concepts. In particular, Fodor arid Pylyshyn have an unsatisfactory grasp of the notion of an invariant. There are more serious misunderstandings evident in the response to Fodor arid Pylyshyn given by Turvey et al. I point out that these ecological theorists have difficulties with philosophical terms and theories they employ in defense of Gibson. As a result of evident confusions over notions of intension, extension, and property, arid confusions over the nature of Fred I. Dretske's theory of natural laws and Hillary Putnam's theory of natural kinds, Turvey et al do not manage to show how Gibson's approach could account for intensionality. I conclude by suggesting that the ecological approach nevertheless is compatible with the idea, of analyzing perceptual information pickup in terms of behaviour, or dispositions to behave. On such an interpretation, the ecological approach is similar in many important respects to the D.M. Armstrong's philosophical theory of perception. The comparison provides ecological theorists with a precedent as well as philosophical model to consult in order to better, understand the philosophical language and terminology. On the other hand, the comparison with Armstrong provides philosophers of perception with a means for approaching Gibson's view and the problems with which it will he confronted.

Abstract (sommario):
@Creator of an immense work, each of whose opus constituded an artistic revolution, James Joyce (1882-1941) has left to Anglo-Irish writers a formidable legacy. Leaving behind the XIXth century novel, Joyce irrevocably altered the modern literary map. Representing that moment of transition for contemporary sensitivity known as modernity, Joyce's work undeniably was and still is a burden to generations of Irish writers. A comparative study of O'Brien, McGahern and Banville's novels and short stories can lead to a fruitful historical analysis of Joyce's influence on XXth century Irish literature. Each of those three writers has indeed benefited, consciously or inconsciously, from the literary lessons of the " master ", whose heritage, possibly a source of inhibitions, is now possible to measure. Altohgh Flann O'Brien (1911-1966) was hailed as the author of several masterpieces, the general critical reception derided the Joycean undertones of his work, and tended, not undully so, to condemn his work as inferior imitation. As a matter of fact, O'Brien remains as the first Irish metafictionalistalong with Joyce. Less than two generations later, John McGaherrn (1932-)appeared on the Irish literary scene. Undeniably marked by Joyce's early work, whose realistic and symbolical influence can be perceived in most of his short stories and some of his novels, McGahern only reluctantly admits his indebtedness to the author of Dubliners. And despite the poetic originality of his writings, he continues to write as though James Joyce had never existed. As for John Banville (1945-), who seems to have inherited Joyce's sense of experimentation as well as his capacity to recycle the work of his predecessors, he has obviously started to pave the way to new forms of literature -maybe for the first time since Ulysses. With Banville, the Irish literary community may be able to turn over the leaf Joyce wrote nearly a century ago

Abstract (sommario):
This study has determined the historical significance of the James A. Allison Estate as a designed historic landscape and suggested possible guidelines for future development at the site by the current owners, Marian College. Historical evidence indicated that the James A. Allison Estate was designed by noted landscape architect Jens Jensen of Chicago. This was proven through the identification of definable design elements utilized by Jensen in his design work. These included: reliance on native plants, manipulation of space, light and shadow, architectural features (pergolas and bridges), water features, a meadow, and a player's green and formal gardens. National Register Bulletin #18 was then used to determine that the James A. Allison estate could be classified as a designed historic landscape. Suggestions for the future treatment of the site, including guidelines for development, were then created.

This thesis intends to contribute to the understanding of Henry James s representation of North-American national culture in his late works. In 1907, he publishes, under the title The American Scene, the travel reports of his visit to United States. The analysis of this array of reports, in the context of the American literary tradition of Nineteenth Century, helps to reconstitute the image constructed by the author of the individual-society relation, in American culture, in the turn of Nineteenth to Twentieth Century. From 1820s onwards, North-American essayists, fictionists, ministers, poets and theologians began to identify the Judeo-Christian etiologic myth with the founding myth of American democracy. It thus began an intellectual dispute between those who intended to associate American identity to the innocence of Adam s before the Fall and those who referred it to the image of the fallen Adam. This dispute s heritage and the literary legacy of writers as Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville and Henry James Sr., combined with his European cultural experience, ground Henry James s allegorized version of the American Adam s myth, which constitutes the narrative of his last published novel, The Golden Bowl. The conjoined analysis of this novel and the travel reports makes possible to understand the symbolic relevance, in James s work, of the categories of Fall and sin to the moral growth and the development of aesthetic sensibility in the individuals.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the life of James Wesley Silver, a professor of history at the University of Mississippi for twenty-six years and author of Mississippi: The Closed Society, a scathing attack on the Magnolia State's history of racial oppression. In 1962, Silver witnessed the campus riot resulting from James Meredith's enrollment as the first black student at the state's hallowed public university and claims this was the catalyst for writing his book. However, by examining James Silver's personal and professional activities and comparing them with the political, cultural, and social events taking place concurrently, this paper demonstrates that his entire life, the gamut of his experiences, culminated in the creation of his own rebel yell, Mississippi: The Closed Society. Chapter 1 establishes Silver's environment by exploring the history and sociology of the South during the years of his residency. Chapter 2 discusses Silver's background and early years, culminating with his appointment as a faculty member of the University of Mississippi in 1936. Chapter 3 reveals Silver's personal and professional life during the 1940s, as well as the era's notable historical events. The decade of the 1950s is discussed in chapter 4, particularly the civil rights movement, Silver's response to these changes, and those in his own life. Chapter 5 follows the path of James Meredith's integration of Ole Miss, the publication of Silver's book, and its aftermath. The conclusion is a brief epilogue of Silver's post-Mississippi life.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis focuses on a transformational but disregarded period in New Zealand’s twentieth century history, the era from the arrival of the Marines in 1942 to the arrival of Rock Around the Clock in 1956. It examines one of the chief agents in this metamorphosis: the impact of American culture. During this era the crucial conduits of that culture were movies, music and comics. The aims of my thesis are threefold: to explore how New Zealanders responded to this cultural trinity, determine the key features of their reactions and assess their significance. The perceived modernity and alterity of Hollywood movies, musical genres such as swing, and the content and presentation of American comics and ‘pulps’, became the sources of heated debate during the midcentury. Many New Zealanders admired what they perceived as the exuberance, variety and style of such American media. They also applauded the willingness of the cultural triptych to appropriate visual, textual and musical forms and styles without respect for the traditional classifications of cultural merit. Such perceived standards were based on the privileged judgements of cultural arbiters drawn from members of New Zealand’s educational and civic elites. Key figures within these elites insisted that American culture was ‘low’, inferior and commodified, threatening the dominance of a sacrosanct, traditional ‘high’culture. Many of them also maintained that these American cultural imports endangered both the traditionally British nature of our cultural heritage, and New Zealand’s distinctively ‘British’ identity. Many of these complaints enfolded deeper objections to American movies, music and literary forms exemplified by comics and pulps. Significant intellectual and civic figures portrayed these cultural modes as pernicious and malignant, because they were allegedly the product of malignant African-American, Jewish and capitalist sources, which threatened to poison the cultural and social values of New Zealanders, especially the young. In order to justify such attitudes, these influential cultural guardians portrayed the general public as an essentially immature, susceptible, unthinking and puritanical mass. Accordingly, this public, supposedly ignorant of the dangers posed by American culture, required the intervention and protection of members of this elite. Responses to these potent expressions of American culture provide focal points which both illuminate and reflect wider social, political and ideological controversies within midcentury New Zealand. Not only were these reactions part of a process of comprehension and negotiation of new aesthetic styles and media modes. They also represent an arena of public and intellectual contention whose significance has been neglected or under-valued. New Zealanders’ attitudes towards the new cinematic, literary and musical elements of American culture occurred within a rich and revealing socio-political and ideological context. When we comment on that culture we reveal significant features of our own national and cultural selves.

Abstract (sommario):
Pragmatism, as a philosophical movement, and anarchism, as a political one, seem to be connected by two seemingly complementary approaches: pragmatism is often considered as politically neutral, while anarchism as philosophically indifferent. The aim of our study is to examine this double neutrality and, following our interrogation, namely « is pragmatism an anarchist philosophy? », to evaluate the possibility of a positive answer, the political consequences of the one and the philosophical consequences of the other, and also the causes of their alleged complementary indifference, inspiring us the idea of a commun architecture. First, we try to locate this architecture in the philosophy of James and Dewey, focusing on the relationship of pragmatism to democracy. Thus, we point out the main features of a philosophy of experience fitting the demands - in a pragmatic perspective - of democracy. For it is only experience that allows democracy to see its ethical dimension - very present among pragmatists - become political. Second, we examine the articulation of what we can call anarchist doxa with the philosophical assertions that form, according to James and Dewey, the philosophy of experience. We focus, in particular, on the thought of Proudhon and Bakunin, whose kinship seems to carry the same anti-absolutist spirit that forms the critical dimension of the philosophy of experience

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores We Two Together, the unique dual autobiography of the reformers Margaret and James Cousins. It places this rich text in the context of the first half of the twentieth century and demonstrates its value as a source for Irish, Indian, gender, and global history. It investigates how the Cousinses represent their efforts to create and maintain a companionate marriage over a lifetime, depict their work as activists for women’s suffrage, Indian nationalism, educational reform, and other causes, and recount the impact of cross-cultural encounters on their cosmopolitan lives. We Two Together provides insight into the lives of two extraordinary individuals as they witnessed and participated in several key social and political movements in Ireland and India. In bringing attention to this book, I hope that other historians will make use of it and that librarians will preserve the rare copies in their possession.

Abstract (sommario):
The legacy of James Shaver Woodsworth, according to the traditional biographies, has been an indelible one on the Canadian historical landscape. His biographers have elevated Woodsworth to not only a hero of the Canadian political left, but of the whole nation. Studies of Woodsworth’s life have traditionally rested their case on All Peoples’ Mission in Winnipeg, calling it a watershed moment in the ideological development of J. S. Woodsworth. They characterize his time as Superintendent, from 1908-1913, as the defining moment which would later lead him to found the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation. This Master’s thesis seeks to analyze the historical periphery of this period in order to illustrate Woodsworth’s standard approach to the Social Gospel in Canada. By employing a micro-historical methodology, a greater context reveals that All Peoples’ Mission was not the dynamic, revolutionary institution that his biographers describe. Instead, Woodsworth spent his time in Winnipeg experimenting with different and sometimes conflicting philosophies. This stage of Woodsworth’s ideological development can instead be best characterized by his strong nativist beliefs. His writings and speeches during this period indicate a struggle between Woodsworth’s understanding of assimilation and integration. James Shaver Woodsworth was a far more complex character during this period than his biographers would have us believe.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation offers a reading of the prefaces of Walter Scott, Henry James, Joseph Conrad and other authors, based on a systemic approach and on various theories of communication. Chapter 1 sums up the main existing theories on prefaces and shows their relevance to the present research. Chapter 2 describes the main elements in the schemes of communication of the prefaces : title, author, reader, locus. Chapter 3 shows how those elements form organised systems, both within each preface and regarding intertextual connections. Chapter 4 explores some of the functions of communication brought about accordingly by each author : negotiation, lecture to the reader, conversation, representation of the self. Finally, chapter 5 deals with the semantic effects of the prefaces

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis reconsiders in detail the connections between a selection of innovative female modernist writers who experimented variously with stream-of-consciousness techniques, May Sinclair, Dorothy Richardson, Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf. It describes in this context the impact of the philosophy and thoughts of both William James and Henri Bergson upon these women writers’ literary work. It also argues for a fundamental revision of existing understandings of this interconnection by considering the feminist context of such work and recognising that the work of these four female writers in effect incorporates a ‘gendered’ reading of James and Bergson (encountered both directly and indirectly through the cultural and intellectual zeitgeist). In establishing a feminist perspective as key elements of their aesthetic the thesis explores the vital influence of existing tradition of female autobiography upon their reception and usage of both James and Bergson. The latter’s impact on such women writers were so distinctive and powerful as the work of these philosophers seemed to speak directly to contemporary feminist concerns and in that context to represent a way of thinking about society and culture. This echoes and has parallels with existing attempts at revisions of patriarchal society and creating new spaces for female independence. In the above context the thesis reviews existing research on the impact of James and Bergson on these four writers and offers new insights into how each of them made use of these two seminal thinkers by analysing the relationship between theories, selected literary and philosophical texts. Stream-of-consciousness ought to be seen as a distinctive, specific tradition connected with feminist concerns and as a way of writing the inner and hidden self, rather than just a narrow formal feature of literary texts; it offers women a continuing, creative exploration of its possibilities as fictional practice. The female modernists included in this account represent the celebrated: Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield, together with writers largely and unjustly forgotten in subsequent periods: Dorothy Richardson and May Sinclair. However, the thesis demonstrates that such female modernist writers gained much from being part of a range of informal networks, being almost within a tradition in which they learnt, borrowed and reacted to each other; an interconnection that requires new critical recognition.

Abstract (sommario):
Within the French financial system, the singularity of the "institutions generating surplus" is to be observed. As far as their number is concerned, these institutions could be a side phenomenon; however they actually do have weight, in the financial system, as far as their dimension is concerned. By their liquid reserves, these institutions form a part of the supply, which quicken the financial markets and particularly the monetary one. We are mainly devoted to the study of the place and investment behavior excess liquidities generating bodies. The characteristics of debt economy which we approached in part one outline the contains faced by the excess liquidates generating bodies. The place of the banque de France, interventions of which are necessary, as so far as "lender without appeal constrained", is determining for the role of excess liquidities generating bodies on the monetary market. The funds employments, on the market, by these bodies aim at a financial remuneration in order to improve, first, their operating statement. So the tendered quantities have not great consequences on the equilibrium conditions on the money market, especially on the rates of interest. We divided the generic expression banks as an entity and we considered their statement of finances. Our research in the economic literature led us to present some models of auto-economy (Tobin, Modigliani and Sutch). The study of three excess liquidities generating bodies (the CDC, the crédit agricole and the sociétés d'assurances) led us to two important conclusions. First there is no full validation of these models, within our study limits. Second, concerning these three bodies and the period observed in our study, we found heterogeneity of financial behaviors. This last conclusion means that it seems difficult, if not impossible to form a single model that should explain the investments behaviors of the considered bodies
