Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Benign fibrous histiocytoma is a rare and usually painless oral neoplasm found in adults that may affect either soft tissue or bone typically noted in their fifth decade. This case was found in a 32 year-old Caucasian male who presented with a fairly well circumscribed unilocular radiolucent lesion extending from the mandibular right first incisor to the left first premolar and reaching the inferior mandible on a panoramic radiograph. A bony window was created and the intrabony lesion was curetted. Multiple sections revealed a cellular tumor composed of uniform spindle-shaped cells arranged in a prominent whorled or storiform pattern. Scattered xanthoma cells, multinucleated giant cells, lymphocytes, and deposits of hemosiderin were noted throughout the lesional stroma. Although malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the bone is relatively well known, benign fibrous histiocytoma of the bone is very rare. Citation Ertas U, Büyükkurt MC. Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Chilled saline is commonly used to irrigate the ocular surface after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and is often considered by the patients to be uncomfortable. Room temperature (non-chilled) saline may be a safe and less painful alternative. Objectives: To compare pain and visual outcomes after irrigating the ocular surface with chilled saline versus room temperature saline in alcohol assisted PRK. Materials and methods: In this prospective, single-masked, randomized, contralateral eye study, myopic eyes were treated with PRK. Immediately after laser ablation one eye was irrigated with chilled saline and the other with non-chilled saline. Primary outcomes measured were pain, haze, uncorrected (UCVA) and best-corrected (BCVA) visual acuities, and manifest refraction. Results: Each group comprised of 40 eyes. There was no significant difference in pain between the groups at any point during five days after surgery. At 6 months the mean UCVA was -0.08 logMAR ± .077 [SD] (20/17) and -0.07 ± .074 logMAR (20/17) in the chilled and non-chilled groups respectively (p =.35). Both groups achieved 95% UCVA of 20/20 or better. The manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) was -0.05 ± 0.21 D and -0.025 ± 0.27 D respectively (p = .79). There were no lines lost of BCVA and no haze observed. Similar outcomes were observed with regard to pain and vision in both groups. Conclusion: The use of room temperature saline irrigation during PRK appears to be safe and effective. Nepal J Ophthalmol 2013; 5(10): 154-160 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/nepjoph.v5i2.8706

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the swallowing patterns of the tongue using B-mode sonography. A total of 65 patients aged between eight and 35 years were enrolled in the study including 25 controls. The swallowing patterns of the 40 patients were divided into groups of ten normal, 12 inconsistent, and 18 abnormal. Eight patients with a swallowing abnormality had Angle Class I occlusions, two had Class II, and the remaining ten patients had Class III. The majority of abnormal or inconsistent swallowing patterns were found in cases of mandibular prognathism. Quantitative data was not analyzed in this study. The results of this study show that B-mode sonography, being a non-invasive procedure permitting direct visualization of the movements of the tongue in both coronal and sagittal planes, can be used with certainty for diagnosing swallowing abnormalities. Assessment of genetic diversity and relationships based on RAPD and AFLP analyses in Miscanthus genera landraces. Can. J. Plant Sci. 93: 171–182. In this study, molecular markers, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) as well as combined RAPD and AFLP analysis were used to assess genetic diversity in a reference set of 38 Miscanthus accessions of which 32 were collected from South Korea and 6 from foreign countries. Using 30 selected RAPD primers, 197 amplified products were generated with an average of 6.6 bands, of which 135 bands were polymorphic (68.6%). A total of 1150 bands were detected by four-primer AFLP combinations with an average of 287.5 bands, out of which 923 bands were polymorphic (80.3%) across all the accessions. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated that a high proportion of the genetic variation (56% for RAPD and 58% for AFLP) was found among the Miscanthus species in South Korea. Genetic relationship was estimated using the Jaccard's coefficient values between different accessions, ranging from 0.23 to 0.93 in RAPD and 0.34 to 0.94 in AFLP. The un-weighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) analysis demonstrated less difference between RAPD and AFLP when alternative similarity coefficient was applied. The principal coordinates (PCO) analysis also revealed the significant geographic structure in the tested accessions. Among the accessions, SNU-M-040, 074 and 157 were highly divergent. Pattern of isolation by distance was observed in Miscanthus accessions, indicating that significant genetic differentiation among accessions might be due to the geographic distance.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The aim of the study was to determine how the morphology of occlusal surfaces might affect occlusal loading that is transferred to the tooth apex. Photoelastic methods were used to assess apical stress generated by seven variations of occlusions. A test assembly with a 2 kg weight was applied to teeth to create a vertical load. By analyzing the direction and magnitude of the apical principle stress under the polar light that was measured at the apexes of mandibular teeth, the occlusal loading position of each tooth and its direction was obtained based on general mechanical principles. It was found distal incline planes (or slopes) of cusps and lingual incline planes (or slope) of buccal cusps of mandibular posterior teeth carried the greatest occlusal load in normal occlusion. In the other six variations of occlusion presented in this study, the principle apical stresses changed more or less as a result of the different occlusal contact relationships. The magnitude of principle apical stress increased considerably in the flat surface occlusion because of the lack of distribution of occlusion loading by the smooth dentition surface. It is concluded the occlusal surface morphology has a significant effect on the direction and magnitude of apical stress. To establish a suitable relationship of occlusion that can conduct favorable occlusal loading physiologically is very important. Citation Wang M, Zhang M, Zhang J. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The aim of this study was to identify the perceived sources of stress among dental students, dental hygiene students, and dental technology students enrolled at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). The modified dental environment stress questionnaire was administered to 183 students. The perceived stressors varied between major and year. Dental students gave high scores for examinations, reduced holidays, inadequate time for relaxation, fear of failure, completing clinical requirements, and differences in opinion between staff. Dental hygiene students gave the highest scores for uncertainty about the field of study as future career, examinations, inadequate clinical training and supervision, inadequate relaxation, and discrimination between students. Dental technology students also gave high scores for uncertainty about future career, examinations, approachability of the staff, inadequate relaxation, and completing requirements. Females are more stressed than males with regard to personal factors. Dental technology and/or dental hygiene students have significantly higher scores than dental students in 12 items. Students who reported their first choice of study was not their current field of study showed more stress concerning their future careers. The high scores reported for some stressors among students emphasize the need to address student's concerns. Citation Al-Omari WM. Perceived Sources of Stress within a Dental Educational Environment. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate three different methods (ST: Standard technique; PS: Pea-size; TT: Transverse technique) for dentifrice use in children between 5-7 years of age, as well as to compare the amount of dentifrice dispensed by using tubes with different orifices (cresent or round shaped). Methods and Materials One hundred children who dispensed the dentifrice themselves were asked to apply the quantity of dentifrice they usually used (ST or TT) (Phase-I). In Phase-II they were instructed to apply a PS amount, and in Phase III the TT was demonstrated. Statistical analysis was obtained by using Anova and t-test. Results Most of the children (82 patients) preferred to use the ST rather than the TT (18 patients). A decrease in the dentifrice amount was obtained with both of the shaped orifices after the instruction of PS or demonstration of the TT (p< 0.05). It was observed the amount of dentifrice dispended decreased when a cresent-shaped orifice was used. Conclusion Children usually preferred to use the ST rather than the TT before the instruction or demonstration by the operator. The amount of dentifrice dispensed generally decreased when a dentifrice tube with a crescentshaped orifice was used. Citation Ölmez A, Tüfekciogğlu D, Erdemli E. Abstract (sommario):
Fifteen genetically diverse parental genotypes of sunnhemp belonging to different geographical origin were assessed to evaluate general and specific combining ability of parents and cross combinations, respectively, for selecting the superior parent combination. For this, fifteen parents and their 105 F1s were grown in a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replications and data were collected in respect of plant height, base diameter, green weight, fibre weight, stick weight and fibre percentage. Analyses of variances of diallel revealed that there was predominance of specific combining ability (sca) in almost all the characters except fibre percentage and general combining ability (gca) was significant only in case of plant height. From the gca effect of parents it can be seen that K-12 (B) and SUIN-056 showed good promise as general combiners and able to produce better cross combinations. However only one cross combination viz. SUIN–056 × SUIN–074 was recorded positive sca effects for all the characters. This cross combination along with SUIN–001 × SUIN–056 exhibited positive heterosis over the better parents in all the characters studied and can be used in breeding programme for producing improved sunnhemp population. Further, to exploit fully both additive and nonadditive variances present in this population, random as well as chain crossing among the promising crosses was found effective to exploit both additive and fixable epistatic effects. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim The purpose of this clinical and radiographic investigation was to evaluate the treatment outcomes of endodontically treated teeth obturated with Soft-Core™ versus cold lateral compaction. Methods and Materials A total of 98 teeth were endodontically prepared using the Quantec LX rotary system with a crown-down pressureless technique and obturated with either Soft-Core™ or cold lateral compaction. The outcome of treatments were evaluated clinically and radiographically by two blinded evaluators after three years. Statistical analysis was performed using an unpaired t-test and the Mann Whitney test at the level of significance set at 95%. Results Regardless of the periapical status of the teeth, no statistically significant difference was found between the two obturation techniques (p>0.05). The Kappa value for the interobserver agreement was 0.73. Conclusion Within the limits of the study, it is concluded the Soft-Core obturation technique did not result in a significantly different treatment outcome when compared with cold lateral compaction after three years. Further investigations should be carried out on the Soft-Core technique. Clinical Significance Using the Soft-Core system reduced working time, and the difference was found to be statistically different (p=0.00056) from the working time required for cold lateral compaction. This reduction in canal filling time holds the potential for cost savings for clinicians while maintaining the quality of the clinical outcome. Citation Özer SY, Aktener BO. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim The purpose of this article is to report a rare case of primary tuberculosis of the tongue. Background Tuberculosis is an infectious, chronic granulomatous disease that can involve almost any organ in the body, but primary lesions are usually confined to the lungs. Oral lesions are an infrequent occurrence in tuberculosis, and tuberculosis of the oral cavity is often a consequence of active pulmonary tuberculosis. Although primary tuberculosis in the oral cavity has been documented, it is a rare occurrence. Report A 42-year-old male patient presented with chief complaints of severe pain and ulceration on the ventrolateral surface of the left side of the tongue, measuring about 1.25×1.50 cm with surrounding erythema and induration of one-month duration. The ulcer was initially painless but became painful later with increased severity over time. The sore tongue caused difficulty in eating, drinking, swallowing, and even talking. The patient also complained of malaise for some duration, but there was no history of fever, cough, weight loss, and his bladder-bowel habits were normal. An excisional biopsy differentiated the lesion from squamous cell carcinoma and confirmed the diagnosis. Summary Even though primary tuberculosis in the oral cavity is a rare finding, it must be included in the differential diagnosis of mucosal lesions. This case provides a clinical example of the importance of this inclusion for the well being of the patient and for the community due to the communicable nature of the disease. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of multiple consecutive coatings of a one-step self-etch adhesive system (Clearfil Tri-S Bond) on the microtensile bond strength (MBS) to dentin. Methods and Materials Nine caries-free human lower third molars were sectioned perpendicular to the long axis to expose the mid-coronal dentin. The teeth were separated into three experimental groups (n=3) according to the number of adhesive resin coats applied. In Group 1 one layer of Clearfil Tri-S Bond was applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. In Group 2 and Group 3 the adhesive was applied in two and three layers, respectively. In these two groups the first layer was applied according to the manufacturer's instructions but the second and third layers of adhesive were not light cured after application. After the placement of the composite, the teeth were sectioned to obtain approximately 1 mm2 beams for testing. Eighteen beams were prepared for each group using the ‘non-trimming’ method. The MBS values of all specimens were tested, and fracture modes were then determined using a stereomicroscope. Results The mean MBS values (in MPa) of Group 1 (one coat of the adhesive) was significantly lower (p=0.04) than those of Group 3 (three applied coats of the adhesive). There were no statistically significant differences between Groups 1 and 2 and Groups 2 and 3. Conclusion Within the limitations of this in vitro study the application of multiple coats of a one-step self-etch adhesive may provide an increase in bond strength compared to the application of only one coat of adhesive. Clinical Significance Three consecutive coats of one-step self-etching adhesive application can improve MBS. Citation Arisu HD, Eligüzeloğlu E, Üçtaşli M, Ömürlü H. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim To determine the association of impacted maxillary canines with other developmental dental anomalies and compare them with a control population and to compare palatally and labially impacted canine associated anomalies. Methods and Materials Ninety non-syndromic orthodontic patients from a south Indian population, with either labial or palatal impactions of one or both maxillary canine teeth, were selected for the study group. A group of 250 patients who had normally erupted maxillary canines were selected as controls. Clinical findings and panoramic radiographs were used to identify dental anomalies. Results Prevalence of premolar rotation was found to be 80% in the study group followed by canine rotation (20%), taurodontism (26.6%), infraocclusion of premolars (25.5%), impacted mandibular canine (11.1%), and peg lateral (7.7%). Forty-nine (54.4%) palatally impacted, 37 (41.1%) labially impacted, and 4 (4.4%) centrally impacted canines were also observed. Of the 250 subjects in the control group 78.8% presented with premolar rotation. Maxillary canine transmigration, infraocclusion of premolars, anomalies of maxillary lateral incisors, and taurodontism showed significant associations with palatally impacted canines (P<0.05). Conclusion The present study illustrates a significant association of anomalous maxillary lateral, anomalous mandibular canine, taurodontism, infra occlusion of premolar, over retained deciduous molar, and maxillary canine transmigration with ectopically placed canines. These associations suggest these conditions may share a common genetic origin and existence of these anomalies can anticipate maxillary canine impaction which can help in cautious observation and early treatment for maxillary canine impaction. Clinical Significance Anomalous lateral incisors can serve as a predictor for palatal maxillary canine impaction. These anomalies could serve as an easily recognized, early warning sign for the monitoring of the canine position and timely early referral in appropriate cases. Citation Nagpal A, Pai KM, Sharma G. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare the surface pH level of four different type sealers after mixing at various time intervals in vitro. After cleaning and shaping root canals in 50 recently extracted, singlerooted human teeth, they were divided into six groups. Each of four groups was obturated with Apexit, N2, Sealapex, and Grossman sealers. The remaining groups served as controls. In group 1 nothing was added to the vial of saline solution. In group 2 canals had been instrumented but not obturated with sealer. The pH level of saline solutions was determined at intervals of 1 hour, 4 hours, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 1 week, and 4 weeks after teeth were placed in them. The pH levels of the five solutions were compared to each other and to that of saline solution only. Citation Evcil MS, Çolak M. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim Controversy continues regarding the biocompatibility of denture base materials. One method to evaluate the biocompatibility of materials is in an animal study. Using dogs as subjects, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the vestibular tissue reaction to cobalt chromium (Co-Cr), heat cure acrylic resin, and acrylic resin mixed with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) compared with a control group using the histopathologic method. Methods and Materials Twelve disk shape samples (2 mm × 8 mm) in four groups of Co-Cr, acrylic resin, acrylic resin mixed with a 20% weight ratio of Al2O3, and a control group (Teflon) were fabricated. In one stage surgery two samples of each material (8 samples) was implanted in the buccal vestibule of each dog (n=6), subcutaneously. At 45 and 90-day intervals, half of the samples were excised along with peripheral tissue to assess the presence of inflammation by grading on a scale from 0 to 3 and the presence of a fibrotic capsule using histological observations. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, and Tau b Kendal tests. Results Tissue reaction between Co-Cr and the control group was significant (P=0.02), but it was not significant between other groups. There was no significant difference between the 45 and 90-day postinsertion samples. The formation of fibrotic capsule groups was significant (P=0.01). It was significant between the Co-Cr and acrylic resin groups (P=0.01) and the acrylic resin and control groups (P=0.01). Conclusion The Co-Cr group was more toxic than the other groups. The inflammation increased during time. The inflammation in two acrylic groups was greater than the control and less than the Co-Cr group. The formation of fibrotic capsule, except in the acrylic resin with Al2O3 group, increased over time. Clinical Significance Co-Cr alloys are toxic and can produce damage to living tissue. Heat cure acrylic resin materials have less toxicity, and their use is safer than Co-Cr alloys. Citation Ebadian B, Razavi M, Soleimanpour S, Mosharraf R. Abstract (sommario):
Параметры элементарной ячейки для индиевого соединения: a = 6.9920(4), b = 7.0491(4), c = 17.9196(9) Å, a = 87.692(5), b = 87.381(5),g = 79.173(5)°; для железного: a = 6.9229(3), b = 6.9828(4), c = 17.7574(8) Å, a = 87.943(4), b = 87.346(5), g = 78.882(5)°.Установлено, что серебросодержащие тройные вольфраматы цинка с индием и железом, обладающие подобной структурой, не образуются. Abstract (sommario):
Proctocolectomy with an ileal pouch‑anal anastomosis is currently considered the procedure of choice for the majority of patients with ulcerative colitis. Certain controversies about pouch design and pouch‑anal anastomosis technique remain a matter of debate, and possible advantages of laparoscopic approach are still being discussed. Objective — to investigate short‑term and long‑term outcomes of laparoscopic and open restorative proctocolectomy for UC in terms of postoperative morbidity and pouch function depending on the three types of construction of a neorectum described in our research. Materials and methods. 86 patients with inflammatory bowel disease underwent one‑stage or two‑stage restorative proctocolectomy. The two ileal pouch configurations were used: S‑pouch — in 16 patients and J‑pouch — in 70 patients. Removal of the distal rectum and ileal pouch‑anal anastomosis were performed using transanal distal rectum mucosectomy followed by a handsewn pouch‑anal anastomosis (n = 45) or a double‑stapled technique (n = 31). Laparoscopic approach was applied in 39 patients, and open surgery — in 47 patients. The short‑term (30 days after surgery) and long‑term surgical outcomes were prospectively studied. The analysis of functional outcomes was based on the number of bowel movements a day, episodes of fecal incontinence, seepage, and urgency. Instrumental investigation included measurement of the anal sphincter pressures and ileal pouch threshold volume as well as the study of its residual volume. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS statistical software. Results. There was no postoperative mortality. In the laparoscopic group, 4 (10.3 %) patients had early postoperative complications compared with 13 (27.7 %) patients in the open surgery group, but the difference was not statistically significant (Fisher exact test value is 0.0579 at p < 0.05). Pouch failure occurred in 4 patients. The second‑stage laparoscopic restorative procedure revealed the abdominal cavity almost free of adhesions in 19 (86.4 %) patients after laparoscopic total colectomy. The total number of early and late mucosectomy complications was significantly higher, 12 (75.0 %) vs. 10 (26.0 %) (p = 0.0018), in patients managed with a handsewn S pouch‑anal anastomosis than in patients treated with a J‑pouch‑anal anastomosis. Good functional outcomes were observed in 44 (51.0 %) patients. A strong negative correlation was found between the pouch threshold volume and the number of bowel movements per 24 hours (r = –0.7347, p < 0.0001). The seepage episodes were detected in 30 (34.8 %) patients. The resting anal sphincter pressure was the only measured parameter which correlated accurately with the number of day and night seepage episodes (r = –074, p < 0.0001). Conclusions. Good functional outcomes of construction of a neorectum were associated with the resting anal sphincter pressure (≥ 30 mm Hg) and ileal pouch threshold volume (150 — 250 ml). The S‑shaped and J‑shaped pouches demonstrated the same functional outcomes and posed similar risks. The S‑pouch was associated with a higher postoperative morbidity (p = 0.0018). There was no significant difference between laparoscopic and open surgery groups in terms of morbidity rate and functional outcomes. However, it was much easier to perform the second‑stage surgery after laparoscopy due to less adhesion formation.

Abstract In this study one-year clinical results of high-viscosity glass ionomer cement (GIC) (Fuji IX, A3, GC, Japan) were determined in class I and class II restorations in 68 primary molars with occlusal or approximal caries. Following caries removal and cavity preparation, the teeth were restored with Fuji IX. The restorations were evaluated according to the U.S. Public Health Service's (USPHS) criteria at the end of one year. Statistical analyses of the data obtained were analyzed using the X2 test. The evaluations showed no statistically significant difference between class I and class II restorations in terms of the color mismatch, anatomic form, marginal adaptation, and secondary caries (P>0.05), but they were statistically significant with regard to cavosurface marginal discoloration (P<0.05). At the end of one year, the success rate of the class I and class II restorations of the primary molars restored with Fuji IX was 94%. Citation Yilmaz Y, Eyuboglu Ö, Kocogullari ME, Belduz M. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim The aim of this report is to describe the relationship of some salivary parameters to dental erosion resulting from excessive citric acid consumption and present a description of a prosthetic approach used to restore the damaged dentition of a patient with severe erosion. Background The high consumption of dietary sources of acids can lead to erosion or the excessive wear of dental hard tissues. Erosion may be modified by salivary parameters such as flow rate, pH, and buffering capacity. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) restorations and composite resin veneers can be used successfully to restore impaired esthetics and eliminate tooth hypersensitivity in such cases. Results A 37-year-old woman with a history of excessive lemon consumption presented with a complaint of tooth hypersensitivity and the poor appearance of her dentition due to erosion. Stimulated and unstimulated salivary samples of the patient were evaluated for flow rate, pH, and buffering capacity before and after treatment. The pre-treatment values were found to be higher than post-treatment values. Stimulated samples showed an increase of salivary flow rate, pH, and buffering capacity. The measured parameters put forth the defensive potential of saliva against the acidic diet, and the salivary flow rate and buffering capacity decreased after reducing acidic consumption. The excessively eroded teeth were restored using PFM restorations whereas the superficially eroded teeth were restored with composite resins. Summary The introduction of acidic foods, beverages, or other agents can exceed the natural buffering capacity of saliva. The result is a lowering of the pH of the oral environment which can lead to erosion of enamel and dentin. Loss of tooth structure due to erosion can compromise the esthetics of the dentition and lead to hypersensitivity of the teeth. Teeth damaged by erosion can be successfully restored by composite resin or porcelain restorations and esthetics and function of dentition can be improved. Clinical Significance This report is a profound example of how the over consumption of acidic agents affect not only dental tissues but also the chemical balance of the oral environment as well as the oral habitat. Abstract (sommario):
3005 Background: Monotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has demonstrated efficacy in many cancers. Combining ICIs PD-L1 + CTLA-4 enhanced efficacy but worsened toxicity vs monotherapy; therefore, CTLA-4 dose modifications are often needed, despite a dose-response effect having been shown for efficacy. CX-072 is an investigational PD-L1 PROBODY therapeutic that is preferentially activated in the tumor microenvironment (TME); localized activation may reduce immune-related AEs (irAEs). PROCLAIM-CX-072-001 identified 10 mg/kg Q2W (Mono10) as the recommended monotherapy dose. Here we provide data for Mono10 and for dose escalation of CX-072 in combination with IPI (Combo), with a focus on long-term (≥6 mo) therapy. Methods: Mono10 was evaluated in multiple tumor types. Combo doses evaluated were CX-072 0.3–10 mg/kg and IPI 3–10 mg/kg Q3W. Patients (pts) with ≥6 mo treatment duration (≥6M-TD) were compared to those with < 6 mo of treatment ( < 6M-TD) as of November 30, 2019. Results: Disease control rates (DCR = CR+PR+SD) were 41% for Mono10 (n = 47 of 114; 10 PRs) and 37% for Combo (n = 10 of 27; 1CR + 4 PRs (1CR and 3PRs at 3 mg/kg IPI [IPI3]). Additional results are shown in the table. No treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) led to death. The most common reason for discontinuation (dc) in all groups was disease progression. Conclusions: CX-072 monotherapy demonstrated durable responses consistent with activation of the PROBODY therapeutic in the TME. The safety profile supports the tolerability of CX-072 as monotherapy and when combined with IPI3. CX-072 + IPI3 demonstrated activity in heavily pretreated pts with various tumors. The safety profile of the combination of CX-072 with IPI3 compares favorably to historical data (grade ≥3 TRAEs 55% and leading to dc in 36%; Larkin J, et al. N Engl J Med. 2015;373:23-34). CX-072 + IPI3 is being explored in a phase 2 study in 2L melanoma Clinical trial information: NCT03993379 . [Table: see text]

Abstract (sommario):
Experimentally and theoretically determined line strengths are presented for E,F1Σ+g(v′ = 0, J′ = J′′) – X1Σ+g (v′′, J′′) (2 + 1) REMPI transitions in H2, HD, and D2. The experimental technique employs a hot filament source of internally excited hydrogen that allows experimental determination of line strengths for the low rotational states of highly excited vibrational manifolds (v′′ ≤ 4). The line strengths are found to depend only weakly on J′′ for the states measured here, and theoretical results indicate that the line strengths depend strongly on v′′. These values are combined with previously measured and calculated line strengths for these transitions (K.-D. Rinnen, M.A. Buntine, D.A.V. Kliner, R.N. Zare, and W.M. Huo. J. Chem. Phys. 95, 214 (1991)), resulting in a more complete compilation of REMPI line strengths for molecular hydrogen. Key words: hydrogen, spectroscopy, REMPI, line strength, multiphoton.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This study investigated weight changes of seven different light-cured composite restorative materials, one polyacid glass ionomer compomer, and one light-cured glass-ionomer cement following short-term and long-term storage in water. Two packable composites, three universal (hybrid) composites, one microglass composite, one polyacid glass ionomer resin composite (compomer), one microhybrid low-viscosity (flowable) composite, and one light cured glass ionomer composite cement were evaluated in this study. The weight changes of these specimens were measured daily (short-term storage), and they were measured after six weeks (long-term storage) using an electronic analytical balance. A significant difference was found in Ionoliner, Dyract AP, Opticor flow, Charisma, and Solitare 2, but no significant difference was found in the others (Filtek Z 250, Filtek P60, TPH Spectrum, and Valux Plus). Weight change showed a tendency to increase with the time of water storage. The greatest weight change occurred in light-cured glass ionomer composite cement (Ionoliner), which is followed in order by the weight changes in Dyract AP, Opticor Flow, Charisma, Solitare 2, Filtek Z250, Filtek P60, TPH Spectrum; Valux Plus had the least amount of change. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim To report a case of non-syndromic oligodontia involving 26 permanent teeth in monozygotic twin sisters and to discuss the possible genetic etiology, inheritance pattern and associated dental anomalies of this condition. Background Hypodontia constitutes one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans and is defined as developmental absence of one or more teeth with reported prevalence of 1.6 to 9.6% in the permanent dentition. Oligodontia is defined as agenesis of six or more teeth excluding third molars. Case Report This article describes a case of non-syndromic oligodontia involving 26 permanent teeth in monozygotic twin sisters. The twins had positive family history of hypodontia in their paternal grandmother, parental consanguinity (first cousin) and similarity in pattern of oligodontia. Root formation of permanent maxillary first molars and central incisors was delayed in both the twins. Summary This article reports a case of nonsyndromic oligodontia in permanent dentition of monozygotic twins. Possible genetic etiology, inheritance pattern and associated dental anomalies are discussed. Clinical Significance Strong genetic link associated with oligodontia help the dentist to know the possibility of its occurrence in other family members and in future generations. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to compare self reported joint related temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms in Lebanese and Italian dental and non-dental students and to detect any correlation between different symptoms. Methods and Materials A questionnaire was distributed in Sardinia (Italy) to dental and psychology students and in Lebanon to dental, physical therapy, and biology students to investigate the prevalence, intensity, and correlation of four temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptoms. Results Prevalence of earache varied among the groups from 10.1% to 29.2%, ear stuffiness from 22.5% to 30.8%, TMJ pain from 13.2% to 21.2%, and TMJ sounds from 18.4% to 46.2%. Discussion Different prevalence and intensity of earache and TMJ sounds were found in the examined subpopulations diverse in cultural background and education. However, prevalence and intensity of ear stuffiness and TMJ pain were similar. Association between TMJ sounds and TMJ pain was detected in selected subpopulations, and correlation between one symptom on one side of the head with the same symptom on the contralateral side were noted suggesting most of these symptoms are bilateral. Conclusion The results of the study might be useful to anticipate the possible occurrence of associated symptoms or the same symptom on both sides of the head. Correlations with cultural background and education are difficult to establish. Citation Abou-Atme YS, Zawawi KH, Melis M. Abstract Aim The aim of this research was to evaluate patients. preferences for resin analogs of four major connector designs formulated to have equal rigidity once fabricated in the same alloy Methods and Materials Nineteen Kennedy Class I or II partially edentulous patients participated at two centers. The four major connector analogs (MCAs) were fabricated for each subject using light-polymerizing acrylic resin. The subjects were asked to wear each of them in the mouth for 30 seconds in six pairs in random order, and to report their preference for each pair. Based on these data, the four analogs were ranked in a descending preference order for each patient. Within-subject comparisons preferences were performed with the Friedman test, and the multiple comparisons were performed with the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test for data of each sample independently. Results Statistically significant and consistent preference orders were revealed for both samples, and the thin and wide design was significantly preferred to the thick and narrow design. However, a higher variation was observed for the first preference of each subject. Conclusions Subjects demonstrated a tendency to prefer thinner MCAs. However, the individual predilections of patients may not be an appropriate basis for an attempt to find a .best design. applicable to all patients. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim The aim of this report is to present the management of an aggressive, highly proliferative pregnancy tumor with clinical and radiographic characteristics highly suggestive of a malignant neoplasm. Background Pregnancy tumor is a benign hyperplastic gingival lesion occurring during pregnancy that is indistinguishable from a pyogenic granuloma arising in nonpregnant females, or in males. The lesion usually grows over a few months and tends to bleed. Case Description A 28-year-old woman at four months of gestation was referred for a massive gingival swelling (5.5 cm in greatest diameter) on the mandibular left side. The lesion was painful and continued to grow very rapidly over a threeweek period, with spontaneous bleeding, and it interfered with speech and mastication. Advanced alveolar bone loss also was found beneath the lesion. A malignant process was suspected, and an incisional biopsy revealed a pregnancy tumor. The lesion was excised under general anesthesia during the pregnancy with no untoward reactions. Summary Pregnancy tumor represents an important differential diagnosis of oral masses and can behave in a very aggressive fashion, mimicking a malignant tumor. Clinical Significance This lesion should always be included in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue masses in a pregnant woman even if the lesion is clinically very aggressive. It is acceptable practice to excise aggressive variants of this lesion during pregnancy to avoid distressing side effects. Citation Ababneh K, Al-Khateeb T. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the topographic relationship between the inferior dental canals (IDCs) and the roots of impacted mandibular third molars. Methods Preoperative orthopantomograms (OPGs) were examined and the proximity of the IDC to the roots of impacted mandibular third molars was categorized into the following: groups: superimposition, adjacent, perforation, grooving, notching, or none. The categories notching, grooving, and perforation were regrouped together and called the true relationship between the IDC and the root apices. The type of impaction, age, and sex of the patient were also noted. Results The positional category of 96.1% of the radiographs with bilateral impactions was identical on both sides of the mandible. Out of 2526 impacted mandibular third molars examined, 1146 (45.3%) belonged to the superimposition category, 663 (26.2%) were adjacent, 312 (12.3%) showed grooving, 78 (3.08%) showed notching, and 9 (0.35%) were actually perforating the IDC. The results showed 15.7% of the total cases were in true relationship with the IDC. There was a significant association (p = 0.000) between patient's age and true relationship. Conclusions Identical positional relationship of the bilateral impacted third molars to the IDC was noted in 96.1% of the radiographs. The position of the IDC in relation to the roots of impacted third molars varied according to the patient's age. Citation Hazza'a AM, Albashaireh ZSM, Bataineh AB. Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of four photoactivation systems [quartz tungsten halogen (QTH), light-emitting diode (LED), argon ion laser (AL), and plasma arc curing PAC)] on cementum/ dentin and enamel microleakage of Class II restorations using a microhybrid [Z250 – 3M ESPE] and two packable composites [(SureFil - Dentsply and Tetric Ceram HB – Ivoclair/Vivadent]. Methods and Materials Three hundred sixty “vertical-slot Class II cavities” were prepared at the mesial surface of bovine incisors using a 245 carbide bur in a highspeed handpiece. Specimens were divided into twelve groups (composite-photoactivation systems). Half of the specimens had the gingival margin placed in enamel (n=15) and the other half in cementum/dentin (n=15). Composites were inserted and cured in 2 mm increments according to manufacturers’ recommended exposure times. After polishing, the samples were immersed in 2% methylene blue solution, sectioned, and evaluated at the gingival margins. Data were submitted to statistical analysis using the Kruskal–Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Results No significant differences were found among the photoactivation systems and among resin composites (p>0.05). Microleakage was not significantly affected by location (enamel vs. cementum/dentin, p>0.05). These findings suggested neither the photoactivation systems nor the resin composite types might have an effect on the microleakage at gingival margins Class II cavities. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim Treatment of periodontal diseases is based on efficient scaling and root planing (SRP) and adequate maintenance of the patient. The effectiveness of SRP is influenced by operator skill, access to the subgingival area, root anatomy, and the quality and type of instrument used for SRP. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cutting edges of Gracey curettes after manufacturing and after resharpening using several techniques. Methods and Material The cutting edges of a total of 41 new #5-6 stainless steel Gracey curettes were evaluated blindly using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The quality of the cutting edges was evaluated blindly by a calibrated examiner using micrographs. Data were analyzed using a Kruskal Wallis test and nonparametric two-way multiple comparisons. Results and Conclusions Different sharpening techniques had significantly different effects on the sharpeness of cutting edges (p<0.05). Sharpening by passing the lateral face of curettes over a sharpening stone and then a #299 Arkansas stone produced a high frequency of smooth, sharp edges or slightly irregular edges between the lateral and coronal faces of the curettes. Sharpening by passing a blunt stone over the curette's lateral face produced the poorest quality cutting edge (a bevel). Sharpening of the coronal curette face produced extremely irregular cutting edges and non-functional wire edges. Sharpening with rotary devices produced extremely irregular cutting edges. Retinoid acid-inducible gene-I (RIG-I) is a critical cytoplasmic RNA sensor which plays an important role in the recognition of, and response to, influenza virus and other RNA viruses. In the present study, A 3808-bp cDNA encoding goose RIG-I (goRIG-I) was cloned from splenic lymphocytes of geese using RT-PCR and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) techniques. The encoded protein, which is predicted to consist of 933 amino acids, has a molecular weight of 106.4 kDa and includes an N-terminal caspase recruitment domain (CARD), a domain with the signature of DExD/H box helicase (helicase domain), and a C-terminal repression domain (RD) similar to duck RIG-I (duRIG-I), human RIG-I, and mouse RIG-I. The goRIG-I showed 93.8 and 78.0% amino acid sequence identity with previously described duRIG-I and finch RIG-I, respectively, and 48.9–53.0% sequence identity with mammalian homologs. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis indicated that the goRIG-I gene is strongly expressed in the liver, lung, brain, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius. These findings lay the foundation for further research on the function and mechanism of avian RIG-I in innate immunity.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim The purpose of the case report was to describe the treatment of a 4½-year-old boy with amelogenesis imperfect (AI) in the primary dentition. Background AI is a hereditary condition that affects the development of enamel, causing quantity, structural, and compositional anomalies involving all dentitions. Consequently, the effects can extend to both the primary and secondary dentitions. Report A 4½-year-old boy was brought to the dental clinic complaining of tooth hypersensitivity during meals. The medical history and clinical examination were used to arrive at the diagnosis of amelogenesis imperfecta. The treatment was oral rehabilitation of the primary molars with stainless steel crowns and resin-filled celluloid forms of both maxillary and mandibular primary incisors and canines. Improvements in the patient's psychological behavior and the elimination of tooth sensitiveness were observed, and the reestablishment of a normal occlusion resulted in improved eating habits. The child was monitored in the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic at four-month intervals until the mixed dentition stage. Summary The oral rehabilitation of young children with AI is necessary to reestablish the stomatognathic system function, so important for a child's systemic health. An adequate medical history and a careful clinical examination were essential for a correct diagnosis. Treatment was rendered that was appropriate for the child's age and clinical/psychological characteristics. Clinical Significance Cost-effective restorative techniques involving stainless steel and composite-resin crowns are shown for the restoration of a young patient with amelogensis imperfecta. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim The purpose of this clinical report is to present a description of the prosthetic rehabilitation of a bilateral complete maxillectomy patient using a two piece magnetically connected prosthesis. Background A complete bilateral maxillectomy defect presents a considerable reconstructive challenge for the prosthodontist. It results in devastating effects on cosmetic, functional, and psychological aspects of the patient. Report A 46-year-old woman reported with a chief complaint of missing teeth in the upper jaw. Her primary concerns were a poor facial appearance, inability to chew food, and regurgitation of the food into the nasal cavity. She was diagnosed with carcinoma of the maxillary sinus, for which a bilateral maxillectomy was done followed by post surgical radiation therapy. The prosthetic treatment objectives were to separate the nasal and oral cavities, restore the mid-facial contour, and improve her masticatory functions by providing a full complement of maxillary teeth using a two-piece connected hollow obturator prosthesis connected by a magnet. Summary Insertion and removal of a large prostheses used for rehabilitation of midfacial defects requires good neuromotor coordination and an adequate mouth opening. Because these factors were problematic for this patient, the treatment plan was to fabricate a two piece magnetically connected prosthesis. After fabrication and insertion of the prosthesis, the fit between two sections was evaluated and instructions for insertion, removal, and maintenance of the obturator were given. The patient's speech, masticatory efficiency, and swallowing dramatically improved after insertion. Citation Chandra TS, Sholapurkar A, Joseph RM, Aparna IN, Pai KM. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements of the complexes 1–6 from 5 to 300 K are reported. The data for 2, 3, 5, and 6 have been fitted to a dimer model with a modified Bleaney–Bowers expression which derived antiferromagnetic exchange constants −J = 10.6, 4.5, 5.2, and 3.0 cm−1, respectively (where the Hamiltonian is of the form [Formula: see text]) For 4, an approach to a maximum in χm with decreasing temperature gave an estimated −J < 3.5 cm−1. Only complex 1 showed Curie–Weiss behavior. This is far weaker antiferromagnetic exchange compared to that observed for dinuclear Ru(III) complexes incorporating the dicyd2− bridging ligands (J. Am. Chem Soc. 114, 5130 (1992)) and is attributed to a symmetry and energy mismatch between Cu(II) σ* magnetic orbitals and the πnb molecular orbitals of the bridging ligand which are important for superexchange. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract There is a clinical need to develop innovative targeted therapies against B-cell lymphomas with both improved anti-tumor activity and more favorable toxicity profiles. The interactions between the members of the BH3 domain family of proteins play an important role in the development, progression and prognosis of various subtypes of B-cell lymphoma. We previously reported that downregulation of Bcl-2 using anti-sense oligonucleotides improved rituximab in vitro and in vivo activity (Ramanarayanan J, et al, BJH2004; 127:519–30). GX15-070 is novel pan-inhibitor of bcl-2 anti-apoptotic proteins, and currently is undergoing clinical testing in various cancer settings. In our hope to increase the future treatment options for B-cell lymphoma patients we studied the biological effect(s) of GX15-070 on rituximab activity using the rituximab-sensitive cell lines (RSCL) Raji and RL. Baseline expression of BH3 domain proteins Bcl-2 was studied by Western blotting. NHL cells were exposed in vitro to escalating doses of GX15-070 (0, 2, 5, 10 and 20mM) for 24 and 48 hrs. Cell viability was then determined by trypan blue staining. Once the optimal dose and time of GX15-070 exposure was determined, cell growth inhibition and immunological assays were conducted to determine the effects of BH3-domain targeting on rituximab activity. NHL cells were exposed to different concentrations of GX15-070 (2 to 20mM) in the presence of rituximab, isotype or RPMI. Standard [3H]-Thymidine incorporation assays were performed to assess changes in DNA synthesis at 24 and 48 hrs. For ADCC/CMC assays, Raji or RL cells were exposed to GX15-070 (2 and 5mM) for 24 hrs and subsequently labeled with 51Cr. Labeled cells were then exposed to rituximab (10mg/ml) or isotype (trastuzumab, 10mg/ml) with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (effector: target ration of 40:1) or human serum (1:4 dilution), respectively. 51Cr-release was measured and the percentage of lysis calculated. Statistical differences were analyzed by Chi-square test. In vitro exposure of Raji and RL cells to GX15-070 resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in DNA synthesis and increase in cell death. In addition, pre-incubation of NHL cells to GX15-070 at 2 and 5mM for 24 hrs enhanced rituximab-mediated ADCC, and to a lesser degree CMC. The mean percentage of rituximab-associated ADCC on DMSO (vehicle) pre-treated RL and Raji cells was 20.3% +/−1.14%ste and 17.6% +/−1.07%ste. Exposure of RL cells to GX15-070 (5mM) for 24 hours prior to rituximab exposure lead to a statistically significant increase in antibody-mediated ADCC [mean % lysis 58.56% +/− 3.6%ste, P= 0.007]. Similar results were seen in Raji cells [mean % lysis increased to 42.6% +/−3.03%ste, P=0.026]. Rituximab-associated CMC was also increased by GX15-070. In summary, BH3 inhibition of anti-apoptotic proteins by GX15-070 induces cell death, cell growth arrest, and renders various NHL cell lines more susceptible to rituximab-associated ADCC and CMC. Ongoing studies in lymphoma xenografts will hopefully further validate the potential utility of GX15-070 in combination with rituximab and lead to Phase I clinical studies of this novel combination.

Evaluation of selected soil properties for indicating cattle activity at off-stream watering and river access sites in southern Alberta. Can. J. Soil Sci. 93: 343–358. Off-stream watering troughs may reduce surface water pollution by shifting nutrient distribution from natural watering sites along the river to around artificial water troughs some distance from the river. The objective of our study was to evaluate the suitability of nine soil properties for assessing the impacts of cattle activity adjacent to eight watering sites. Nine surface (0–5 cm) soil properties were evaluated along four 100-m transects at the five off-stream water troughs and three river access sites along the Lower Little Bow River in southern Alberta over 4 yr (2007–2010). The properties included P (total P, soil test P or STP), N (total N, NO3-N, NH4-N), total C, total C:total N ratio (TC:TN), chloride (Cl), and soil bulk density. Soil test P was significantly (P≤0.05) enriched at 65% of site-year comparisons, followed by total C (63%), NO3-N (55%), total P and TC:TN (50%). This suggested that these soil properties were relatively good indicators of cattle activity at the majority (>50%) of watering sites. Chloride was a valid indicator only in non-saline areas (100% of four non-saline sites). Total C and TC:TN ratios were not valid indicators in the calcareous soils at all sites because of possible confounding influence of inorganic C. Overall, we recommend Cl as an indicator of cattle activity at watering sites not affected by soil salinity and high natural Cl levels, and STP as the best overall indicator of cattle activity at off-stream watering sites and river access sites. Certain soil properties were also influenced by distance from watering site, stocking rate, precipitation, and age of water trough.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was to measure the secretion of interleukin (IL)-8 and -10 during an elicited immune response following sublethal doses of hypericin-mediated photodynamic therapy (HY-PDT) in experimental models of residual colon cancer cells in vitro. Investigations were performed on the cancer cell lines SW480 and SW620. Each cell line was exposed to 3 different concentrations of the photosensitizer HY and various doses of irradiation. The cell metabolic activity using an MTT assay was performed and then the measurement of IL-8 and IL-10 secretion was achieved using the Bio-Plex ProTMAssay. There was a statistically significant amplification of IL-8 secretion during HY-PDT in the SW620 cell line (at 1 J/cm2: P = .01, 5 J/cm2: P = .002, and 10 J/cm2: P = .025) and a statistically significant decrease in IL-8 during HY-PDT in the SW480 cell line (at 1 J/cm2: P = .05, 5 J/cm2: P = .035, and 10 J/cm2: P = .035). No statistically significant differences in IL-10 concentration were found following HY-PDT in the SW480 (at 1 J/cm2: P > .4, 5 J/cm2: P = .1, and 10 J/cm2: P = .075) or in the SW620 cell line (at 1 J/cm2: P > .4, 5 J/cm2: P > .4, and 10 J/cm2: P > .4). HY-PDT can both eliminate and control a primary tumor via cytotoxic effects, and at sublethal doses, it can affect IL release by colon cancer cells. In this experiment, this influence depended on the level of tumor cell metastatic activity.

Abstract (sommario):
The equilibrium constants (K) and free energies (-∆G) of adsorption of dipeptides and their cyclic derivatives, 2,5-piperazinediones, on silica from neutral aqueous solutions were calculated from their HPLC retention data on a silica gel column. For the majority of the dipeptides -∆G values were negative, ranging from -1 170 to 430 J mol-1, and K < 1, thus indicating a very weak adsorption. The 2,5-piperazinediones under study exhibited higher adsorbabilities (-∆G -1 070 + 3 030 J mol-1, K > 1) as compared to the respective dipeptides. The effect of the α-substituent structure on the adsorbability is analyzed. A linear dependence of -∆G on the number of aliphatic carbon atoms in a sorbate molecule was observed for the series of dipeptides and 2,5-piperazinediones derived from bifunctional aliphatic amino acids.
