Esta dissertação apresenta ao público um desconhecido escritor imigrante italiano da São Paulo de 1900. Durante sua vida em São Paulo, Giuseppe Salerio trabalhou como dentista na Av. São João no centro da cidade, quando ela mostra ao país seu grande potencial para ser a maior e mais industrializada cidade do Brasil. Un ammalato per forza, uma comédia em um ato. Esse trabalho possui muitos aspectos do teatro do imigrante italiano em São Paulo. A dissertação quer mostrar alguns valores da arte dos imigrantes, depois de momentos difíceis na terra natal: a Itália. Também será apresentada uma tradução e análise de Un ammalato per forza. A análise leva em conta as leituras feitas pelo autor, bem como a influência de Carlo Goldoni.
This work seeks to present to the public an unknown Italian immigrant writer in São Paulo in the 1900\'s. During his life in São Paulo, Giuseppe Salerio worked as a dentist in the Av. São João, downtown, when the city was beginning to show what it would be in the future: the biggest and the most industrialized city in Brazil. Un ammalato per forza is a comedy in one act. This work reveals many aspects of the Italian immigrant theatre in São Paulo. This study wants to discuss some merits of the immigrants\' art, after a very difficult life in their country: Italy. Besides there is a translation and an analysis of Un ammalato per forza. The analysis considers readings done by the author, as well as the influence of Carlo Goldoni on his work.

O pedido, no âmbito da Pragmática cross-cultural, tem sido estudado por diversos pesquisadores, tanto por ser um dos exemplos mais claros de que é possível fazer coisas com as palavras, como prevê a Teoria dos Atos de Fala (Austin, 1962), quanto por seu potencial de ameaçar a face positiva de quem o profere e negativa de quem o recebe, conforme postularam Brown e Levinson (1987). Tendo em vista esses pressupostos, a pesquisa aqui apresentada teve o intuito de investigar a percepção que aprendizes brasileiros de italiano e falantes nativos dessa língua têm da cortesia linguística presente em pedidos realizados em italiano, a fim de verificar se há semelhanças ou disparidades nas percepções relatadas pelos diferentes grupos e quais são os elementos que podem motivar essas percepções. Para tal, uma amostra de oito pedidos, gravados em áudio e vídeo, foi apresentada aos informantes brasileiros e italianos, que deveriam indicar, em uma escala de 1 a 5, qual o nível de cortesia neles presente, além de indicar, em um conjunto de 19 variáveis, o quanto elas influenciaram a percepção relatada. O corpus coletado é composto por 40 aprendizes brasileiros e 51 italianos e, a partir da análise dos dados, concluímos que i) quatro dos oito pedidos avaliados pelos informantes suscitaram percepções análogas e, consequentemente, outros quatro pedidos causaram percepções diversas; ii) algumas variáveis (modificadores de força ilocucionária e aspectos como a entoação) tiveram impacto significante sobre a percepção da cortesia em geral e, quanto a cada pedido em específico, que nem sempre a presença de modificadores de força ilocucionária influencia a percepção da cortesia, podendo também a ausência desses elementos ter um impacto positivo ou negativo. Também concluímos que uma grande quantidade de modificadores não necessariamente resulta em uma alta percepção da cortesia.
The request, in the context of cross-cultural Pragmatics, has been studied by several researchers, both for being one of the clearest examples of the possibility of doing things with words, as predicted by the Theory of Speech Acts (Austin, 1962), as well as for its potential to threaten the positive face of the speaker and the negative face of the hearer, as postulated by Brown and Levinson (1987). In view of these presuppositions, the research presented here was intended to investigate how Brazilians learners of Italian and native speakers of this language evaluate the linguistic politeness in requests made in Italian, in order to verify if there are similarities or disparities in the perceptions reported by the different groups and what are the elements that can motivate these perceptions. To do this, a sample of eight requests, recorded in audio and video, was presented to Brazilian and Italian informants, who were asked to indicate, on a scale of 1 to 5, the level of politeness of those speech acts, besides indicating, in a set of 19 variables, how much they influenced the reported perception. The corpus collected is composed of 40 Brazilians and 51 Italians and, based on data analysis, we concluded that i) four out of eight requests evaluated by the informants presented similar perceptions and, consequently, four other requests caused different perceptions; ii) some variables (modifiers and aspects such as intonation) had a significant impact on the perception of politeness in general. For each specific request, we concluded that the presence of modifiers does not always influence the perception of politeness, and that the absence of such elements may also have a positive or negative impact. Finally, it was possible to notice that a large number of modifiers does not necessarily result in a high perception of politeness.

The activity of the Italian Fasci Abroad provides a new perspective on the nature of both Italian and European fascism, as well as on Italy's foreign policy during the 1930s. This thesis focuses on the means employed by the Fasci in the transformation of Italian communities in Great Britain into 'little Fascist Italies'. It argues that fascistisation of Italian emigrants became effective from 1932 and seemed to succeed in creating a corporativist and totalitarian community from 1935-36, until the international crisis of 1938-39 brought that Fascist dream to an end. The Ethiopian war and Italy's alliance with Germany were the most crucial events in the development of the Fasci in their relationship with both the Italian communities and the British government. The thesis also concentrates on the relationship between Italian and British fascism. Until the end of 1934 both the Fasci and the embassy established regular contacts with the British Union of Fascists; in the same period, BUF propaganda reflected the belief that British fascism was part of universal fascism, and that Rome was its origin. BUF's shift from Italophilia to admiration for National Socialism in 1935, and the contemporary unleashing of an aggressive anti-British propaganda in Italy coincided with a worsening in Anglo-Italian fascist relations. Consequently, the Italian Ambassador to London Dino Grandi strengthened his collaboration with British Conservative Italophiles, who worked with the Italian embassy in an attempt to support the cause of Italy and to improve Anglo-Italian relations. The divergence between Grandi's and the Italophiles' beliefs on the one hand and Italy's anti-British propaganda and foreign policy on the other were evident especially from 1938. The attitude of the Fasci Abroad reflected this divergence. Despite the increased centralisation of the Fasci under the control of the foreign ministry from 1938 onward, the Fasci in Britain continued to share Grandi's views on Italian foreign policy. The Fascist press in Britain, strongly anti-British during the Ethiopian war, became pro-British at the beginning of 1938. Grandi saw himself as the man who could prevent war, until Mussolini declared his mission in London at an end in July 1939.

Cette étude a analysé la présence des sculpteurs italiens à Paris du début du XX siècle à la fin des années Trente, afin de reconstituer un chapitre important de l'histoire des échanges artistiques en France. Nous nous sommes servis d'une méthode historique et philologique, qui a bien été appliquée aux écrits critiques et à la presse de l'époque. Pour ce qui concerne le début du siècle, nous avons remarqué une participation considérable de la part des italiens aux principaux événements expositifs de la capitale comme les Salons officiels; le succès de public et commercial leur avait permis d'obtenir une place parmi les artistes à la mode les plus connus. Pendant les années Vingt, nous avons constaté un nombre moins significatif de sculpteurs; nous avons lu ce fait en nous rapportant à la situation historique italienne, qui en ce temps subissait des importants changements dus à l'ascension du régime fasciste. Les italiens qui étaient encore présents en France après la Guerre ne s'inséraient guère dans le cadre des nouvelles recherches artistiques italiennes, ils poursuivaient, au contraire, des orientations esthétiques plutôt dépassées. La dernière partie de notre étude s'est intéressée à l'essor du nouveau langage artistique de la péninsule italienne qui pendant les années Trente se répandit enfin même à l'étranger. Les sculpteurs italiens pouvaient donc participer activement à la vie expositive parisienne, tout en montrant le visage d'une plastique qui avait enfin pris conscience de ses potentialités. This study has analyzed the presence of Italian sculptors in Paris from the beginning of the 20th Century to the end of the third decade, with the aim of reconstructing an important chapter of the history of artistic exchanges between Italy and France. We have favored an historical-philological method, based on critical publications and old French and Italian press.Concerning the beginning of the century, we have remarked a considerable participation of Italians in the main expositions in the French capital, such as official Salons; critical and market success allowed them to get a main role in the crew of the most popular artists.During the twenties, we have noted a less considerable participation of Italian sculptors; we have interpreted it in relation to historical context of fascist Italy, where the government was trying to develop a national cultural program. The Italian artists in France, after the First World War, didn't share the new Italian artistic orientation; they went on with outdated aesthetic choices.The last part of our research was interested in the development of the new Italian artistic language, finally known out of Italy. The Italian sculptors consequently could take part in arts activity in Paris, showing the face of a new sculpture, finally aware of its potentialities. France gave these experimentations a good welcome in the aim of constituting a longtime friendship with the Italian country

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo recuperar uma parte da história da Associação Cultural Ítalo-Brasileira do Rio de Janeiro (ACIB-RJ). Dentre os feitos desta instituição, para a divulgação e a promoção da língua italiana no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, esta pesquisa destaca o caso da Escola Municipal Itália que, entre os anos de 1992 e 2012, ofereceu o ensino do italiano nas aulas de língua estrangeira, por meio de um acordo entre o Consulado Italiano do Rio de Janeiro, ACIB-RJ e a Secretaria Municipal de Educação do Rio de Janeiro. Partindo da pergunta norteadora desta pesquisa, procurei entender como se deu o processo de implementação e de ensino do italiano na Escola Municipal Itália (1992-2012), apoiados pela ACIB-RJ. Dentro desta investigação, busquei mapear as condições oferecidas ao corpo docente para o ensino do italiano, a natureza dos materiais didáticos utilizados, as dificuldades encontradas pelos professores, bem como identificar as contribuições que o ensino da língua italiana levou à comunidade escolar pesquisada. Além da elaboração de um panorama do ensino do italiano na Escola Itália, busquei identificar, nas entrevistas obtidas com o auxílio da metodologia da história oral, (MEIHY; HOLANDA, 2007; ALBERTI, 2005), as percepções identitárias e os estereótipos relacionados às comunidades de origem ou às comunidades com as quais os colaboradores desta pesquisa entraram em contato. No capítulo de análise, os dados foram divididos em três categorias: (1) História da Associação Cultural Ítalo-Brasileira; (2) O ensino da língua italiana na Escola Municipal Itália (1992- 2012); (3) Identidades e estereótipos no discurso dos entrevistados. O segundo eixo temático, da análise dos dados, foi relacionado com os documentos oficiais do governos federal e do governo municipal do Rio de Janeiro, relativos ao ensino de língua estrangeira (LE) e ao referido papel cultural deste ensino na sala de aula de LE. Na terceira parte da análise, os dados obtidos foram relacionados ao conceito de identidade proposto pelo sociólogo Zigmunt Bauman (2005) e ao de estereótipo proposto por (CROCHIK, 2006; LIPPMANN,1922; HILGARD et. al., 1989). Como será perceptível, nesta dissertação, a ACIB-RJ foi criada com o objetivo de difundir a língua italiana, oferecendo aos descendentes de italiano do Rio de Janeiro o ensino da língua de seus ancestrais. Além da divulgação da língua e da cultura italianas, a instituição buscou facilitar a integração entre os membros da colônia italiana e o Consulado da Itália no Rio de Janeiro. Será possível notar, ainda, que o ensino da língua italiana contribuiu em diversos âmbitos da vida dos estudantes e da comunidade escolar, que já apresentava uma forte herança italiana. Este trabalho buscou contribuir para o registro e a documentação de uma parte da história da ACIB-RJ e da iniciativa da promoção da identidade e da cultura italianas na Escola Municipal Itália, em Rocha Miranda, na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Por fim, com a investigação do período em que o italiano foi ensinado na Escola Municipal Itália, procurou-se refletir, também, sobre o ensino da língua italiana como LE no contexto da escola pública.
The present work aims to recover a part of the history of the Italian-Brazilian Cultural Association in Rio de Janeiro (ACIB-RJ). Among the achievements of this institution for the dissemination and promotion of the Italian language in the state of Rio de Janeiro, this research highlights the case of the Italy Municipal School which, between 1992 and 2012, provided the teaching of Italian in foreign language classes through an agreement between the Italian Consulate in Rio de Janeiro / ACIB-RJ and the Municipal Secretary of Education of Rio de Janeiro. Given the main issue of this research, I tried to understand how the process of implementation and teaching of the Italian language at the Italy Municipal School (1992- 2012) came about, supported by ACIB-RJ. Within this research, I tried to map the conditions offered to the faculty in order to teach Italian, the nature of the didactic material used, the difficulties encountered by teachers and identify the contributions that the teaching of the Italian language brought to the school community researched. In addition to the panorama of the instruction of Italian in Italy School, I sought to discern during interviews, obtained with the help of the oral history methodology (MEIHY; NETHERLANDS, 2007; ALBERTI 2005), the identity perceptions and stereotypes related to their home communities or to the communities which came into contact with the associates of this research. In the analysis section, the data was divided into three categories: (1) History of the Italian-Brazilian Cultural Association; (2) The teaching of the Italian language in Italy Municipal School (1992-2012); (3) Identities and stereotypes in the speech of the respondents. The second main theme was related to the official documents of the federal government and the municipal government regarding foreign language (FL) education and the mentioned cultural role of these teachings in a FL classroom. In the third part of the analysis, the data obtained was related to the concept of identity proposed by sociologist Zygmunt Bauman (2005) and the concept of stereotype proposed by (CROCHIK, 2006; LIPPMANN, 1922; HILGARD et. al., 1989). As will be apparent in this work, the ACIB-RJ was created with the purpose of propagating the Italian language, offering Italian descendants from Rio de Janeiro an education on the language of their forefathers. Besides disseminating the Italian language and culture, the institution sought to facilitate the integration between members of the Italian colony and the Consulate of Italy in Rio de Janeiro. It is also possible to notice that the teaching of the Italian language has contributed in various spheres of life of the students and the school community, which already had a strong Italian heritage. This work aimed to contribute to the recording and documentation of part of ACIB-RJ\'s history, as well as the enterprise of promoting the Italian identity and culture in Italy Municipal School in Rocha Miranda, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Finally, with the investigation of the period when Italian was taught at Italy Municipal School, this work sought to reflect on the teaching of Italian as a FL in the context of public school.

Cette thèse, qui croise l'oeuvre de Jean Cocteau avec la culture italienne, a un double but. D'une part, il s'agit de retracer les éléments qui ont contribué à donner vie à la partie italienne de l'imaginaire du poète, au cours de ses séjours dans la Péninsule. D'autre part, elle vise à faire connaître le point de vue italien sur sa présence dans le pays, en particulier pour ce qui concerne ses films et sa réflexion critique. Elle s'articule en trois parties. Dans la première, il s'agit de détecter comment l'imaginaire italien de Cocteau est né, ainsi que de retracer l'historique des relations qu'il a entretenues avec l'Italie. Dans la deuxième partie, elle aborde le domaine cinématographique dans sa spécificité, également sousun double aspect. D'une part, à travers l'analyse des commentaires que Cocteau a écrits après sa découverte des films italiens, pour pouvoir dégager sa conception de ce cinéma sous une forme générale, et comprendre son intérêt pour certains de ses protagonistes en particulier. D'autre part, elle retrace et analyse la place que la presse spécialisée italienne a accordé à son oeuvre dans l'univers cinématographique du Bel Paese. Enfin, la troisième partie examine les liens concrets que Cocteau a noués avec trois cinéastes italiens : Roberto Rossellini pour l'adaptation cinématographique de La Voix humaine; Luciano Emmer, pour la rédaction et la lecture des commentaires français de Venise et ses amants et de La Légende de Sainte Ursule; enfin Michelangelo Antonioni pour la réalisation de son Mystère d'Oberwald, adaptation de la pièce de théâtre L'Aigle à deux têtes.

The present work focuses on the automatic generation of a written text in Italian language starting from glosses of a fable in Italian Sign Language (LIS). After a detailed overview on LIS and Natural Language Generation, the reader is introduced to our experiment on generation and to the machine that made it possible, i.e. the GENLIS generator. We decided to generate text from a LIS version of the fable “The Tortoise and the Hare”, which was annotated manually. In order to achieve our goal, we converted glosses into Prolog strings to be fed to the generator. In this thesis, we present the generation mechanism, which is based on a set of algorithms that allow the generator to work properly. Furthermore, I compare the generated output with our target translation of the fable and identify some of its flaws. Finally, I specify the main problems encountered in the generation process. This analysis led us also to demonstrate that LIS is a true, complex language with specific characteristics and not some sort of gestural system with no linguistic status.

This study aims to analyze the language variety spoken by Italian Americans gangsters in a corpus of five American drama films released in the 1990s, as well as the strategies used during the process of dubbing into Italian. Several studies have focused on the representation of Italian American gangsters in Hollywood films. However, most of the scholars who have worked on this topic have approached it from a film studies or a cultural perspective, while, to my knowledge, no-one has investigated the characters' linguistic characterization. Indeed, the identity of Italian American gangsters in American movies is always clearly identifiable thanks to a series of visual and other extra-linguistic elements which recur in the films of the genre. However, it is a fact that language plays an extremely important role in the construction of the stereotyped identity of these characters. Indeed, the final result is achieved not only through the selection of the elements which act at the level of the visual code, but also thanks to the interaction of these features with the ones that act at the verbal one. Indeed, the language variety spoken by the protagonists of the films that constitute the object of study of this research is heavily loaded with connotations. Such connotations definitely contribute to characterizing the speakers, conveying both their ethnic origins and their social background. The elements that characterize the variety as an ethnolect are identifiable mainly at a phonological (intonation; pronunciation), and a lexical level (phenomena of code switching and code mixing, and slang), while those which characterize it as a sociolect mainly act at a syntactic (non-standard forms), and lexical level (taboo language, and, again, slang). Italian dubbing seems to have established a set of consolidated strategies aiming at transposing the connotations conveyed by the original language in the target texts. The language variety spoken in Italian dubbing, indeed, cannot be considered as standard, as it turns out to be connoted both from a diatopic and a diastratic perspective. The characterization of the language from a diatopic perspective acts at the phonological (intonation, pronunciation), morphosyntactic (geographically connoted structures), and lexical levels (code switching and code mixing, phraseology, and slang), while the elements that connote the variety diastratically act at the syntactic (non-standard forms) and lexical levels (taboo language and, again, slang). In general, the connotations seem to be maintained in dubbing, although there are obviously differences among the various films, and some of the target texts are indeed less connoted than their corresponding source texts.

The study places itself in the context of other studies in the field of i/emigrant, minority and ethnic studies in as much as the body of work, similarly to i/emigrant texts written in other parts of the world, has been to date considered of marginal significance or has not been examined at all. This study instead considers the opportunities of analysis that texts such as these represent and offers motivations for the need to engage with them. To analyse these texts offers the possibility to observe the relative status of the reader/critic and also to be open to the process of identity creation which does not exist in a vacuum but rather through the exchange and relations held between people of different linguistic, socio-political, historical and cultural backgrounds. With specific regard to material written by Italians in South Africa, an area in which research has up to now been fairly limited, it is argued that the tendency is for writers to emphasise a nationalistic and patriotic definition of Italian identity. This is in part as a result of the pressure emigrants face when confronted by their new cultural, linguistic and geographic setting. The tendency towards patriotic and nationalistic sentiment has also been encouraged during specific moments of Italy's history, and that is, the years leading up to Italy's unification and declaration of its nationhood status (the Risorgimento) and during fascism. The texts analysed are a letter (dated 1833) of a settler to the Cape, one Rocco Catoggio; the war time diary (published in a literary and political Italian newspaper in 1901) by a certain Camillo Ricchiardi, a volunteer and Boer sympathiser during the South African War (1889 - 1902); newspaper articles published by Italian Prisoners of War in the Zonderwater Camp during the Second World War and the biography and chronology by Adolfo G. Bini on the history of Italians in South Africa.

This study investigates the impact of learning Standard Italian among Italian Australian dialect speakers. More specifically, it examines the Italian language learning experiences of bilingual Italian Australians who grew up speaking an Italian dialect at home and studied Italian in formal contexts. It also investigates the possible effect that formal Italian language instruction, and other influences, have had on their current language use. Despite the fact that in Australia the Italian language has been taught in various programs over many years and to a large number of learners who are Italian dialect speakers, little research has been conducted in this area. This study is informed by both social constructionist and phenomenological frameworks and draws on research in the areas of sociolinguistics and second language learning and instruction. The research was conducted in Adelaide, South Australia, on a sample of ten Italian Australians who were brought up in Australia speaking an Italian dialect, using a mixed method approach. Pre-interview questionnaires and semi structured interviews were used to obtain data which was analysed through a thematic approach. From this, themes emerged in the areas of language learning experiences and the participants’ perceived impact that such experiences, and other influences, have had on their language use.The findings show a range of learning experiences among participants. While a small number identify areas where their Italian instruction has had an impact, most do not believe in such an impact on their language use. All perceive that other influences, such as family networks, have had a more significant impact.

Between ] 922-] 940 the Italian government sought to win over to Fascism the Ital ian communities abroad. These communities, it was hoped, would playa part in extending the influence of Italy under the Fascist regime, and were to be used as a tool for the expansion of the Fascist ideal. Through the establishment and use offasci abroad and the development of Italian schools, youth groups and centres of community activity, the Ital ian government sought to "fascistize" the Italian colonies, and to persuade the already patriotic community institutions that Fascism and ltalianita were synonymous. Through the use of a range of documents, and particularly through the testimony of 130 witnesses from three different Italian communities, Manchester, Glasgow and London, this thesis analyses the impact of the approaches of the Italian government on the Italian community in Britain. This thesis explores the experience of Fascism for British-Italians and examines the basis and extent of their response to it. Through a study of membership patterns of the fascia and the youth movements; through an assessment of community participation in fascia activities, and through an assessment of the interviewees memories of their own and their parents' responses to, and memories of, Fascism, this thesis will demonstrate the limits of the success of the Italian government in securing the allegiance of Italians in Britain. It will demonstrate that despite the apparent success of the fascia in securing hegemonic control of virtually all the community institutions (certainly in London and Glasgow), and in securing the participation of large sections of the community to events and organisations under its auspices, a great proportion of the British-Italian community was untouched and unconvinced by the rhetoric of Fascism. Furthermore, it will demonstrate that amongst those who came to a support of Fascism, in sentiment or membership, this support. amongst the great majority, was limited and conditional.

This thesis is broadly concerned with how an ethnic group defines itself through the medium of the press. It contends that newspapers do more than simply 'reflect' the experience of ethnic groups, they in fact help to 'construct' ethnic identity.
The specific focus of this study is the Italian language press and its attempts to shape the ideals of italianita of Italian migrants in Canada and Australia in the immediate post-war period. This work is based on two newspapers, Montreal's Il Cittadino Canadese and La Fiamma published in Sydney, New South Wales. All available editions from the decade 1947 to 1957 are examined in order to determine which symbols and causes were used to promote Italian ethnic cohesiveness.
In the course of this thesis, it is argued that La Fiamma used religion as the basis of its ideal of italianita, while the Italo-Canadian paper Il Cittadino Canadese made the issue of Italian political representation in Canadian government structures the basis of its quest to unite Italian migrants into an ethnic 'community'. Some possible reasons for the difference in focus between the two newspapers are presented in the conclusion. Also, suggestions are made for future comparative research between Italian ethnic communities in Canada and Australia which may help to better explain the differences laid bare in this paper.

Resumo: O autor Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) é, sem dúvidas, um dos mais importantes escritores da passagem do século XIX para o século XX. Já tendo sido reconhecido pela crítica por suas inovações teatrais e suas boas construções em prosa, resolvemos colocar a poesia como centro de nossa investigação. Desmentindo o que certa crítica apressada propagou nos últimos tempos, demonstramos que a poesia de Pirandello não se limitou ao início de seu trabalho literário, mas acabou se fazendo presente em praticamente toda a carreira do escritor. Assim, empenhamo-nos em demonstrar que já nas poesias juvenis do autor um mesmo obsessivo tema lhe aparecia como constituinte principal de sua literatura, o "male di vivere", a que denominaremos mal de viver. Essa transição de gêneros não é, de modo algum, destituída de senso estético próprio do autor siciliano, ao contrário, ela denuncia a visão de mundo que suas obras contemplam. Para tanto, dissecamos o mal triste de viver que escapa dos textos de Pirandello, de tal forma a descolá-lo do momento histórico a que está preso e materializá-lo como conceito teórico, filosófico e antifilosófico dentro da poesia do autor siciliano, mas também demonstrando várias ramificações na obra de Pirandello como um todo. Abstract: The author Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) is undoubtedly one of the most important writers of the late nineteenth century to the twentieth century. Having already been recognized by critics for his theatrical innovations and their good buildings in prose, we decided to put poetry at the center of our research. Denying what certain hurried criticism spread in recent times, we will demonstrate that the poetry of Pirandello was not limited to the beginning of his literary work, but ended up doing this in virtually all the writer's career. Thus, we strive to show that already in youth poetry of the author the same obsessive theme appeared to him as the main constituent of your own literature, the "male di vivere" that will call evil of live (mal de viver). This transition of genres is not, in any way, devoid of own aesthetic sense of the Sicilian author, instead, it denounces the subject view of the world that his works include. Therefore, we dissect the evil of life that is contained in Pirandello's work to remove it from the historical moment that is trapped and materialize it as theoretical, philosophical and unphilosophical concepts within the Sicilian author poetry, but also demonstrating several branches in the work of Pirandello as a whole. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to analyse the range of resonances surrounding the lost or endangered child (or adolescent) in six Italian films made between 1992 and 2005. By drawing on and expanding Emma Wilson’s proposed understanding of the term ‘missing child’ in Cinema’s Missing Children (a transnational, cinema-based study published in 2003), this thesis will seek to open out new ways of exploring both contemporary Italian cinema and the ‘missing child’ paradigm. To this end, the following research questions are pivotal to the discursive trajectory of this thesis as a whole: What does it mean to ground contemporary Italian works which broadly correspond to the term ‘missing child’ (as proposed in Cinema’s Missing Children) within the specific context of Italian culture and society? How would recourse to a range of specifically Italian filmmaking, socio-cultural, or historical phenomena shape (or reshape) our understanding of this topos? In order to fully engage these concerns, this thesis will begin by establishing a rigorous interdisciplinary methodology. In Chapter One, I will address questions of critical reception with particular emphasis on the possible pitfalls of conventional recourse to neorealism as a means of reading the missing child in contemporary cinema. In Chapter Two, I will extend this necessary emphasis on critical reception and related notions of possible distortion and oversimplification, to include the dialogic relation between Italian cinematic articulations of (missing) children, childhoods and the experience of (biological and non-biological) parenthood, and clusters of cultural and political concerns and anxieties. In chapters Three, Four, and Five, I will bring this interdisciplinary methodology to bear on three sets of primary sources. Whilst this close textual analysis will contend with the missing male child (in a range of guises), it will also bring to the fore new ways of thinking with and about the critically neglected female child. By moving away from more normative critical frameworks (including neorealism) this thesis will not only attempt to reset and refresh understandings of important works of the last two decades, but will also work towards a recuperation of the critically disavowed gender identity (and concomitant role and status) of ‘missing’ female children.

In the literature, psych-verbs are known to exhibit some peculiar properties with respect to the theta-assignment, in that their Experiencers can be realized either a subjects (Subj-Exp verbs) or objects (Obj-Exp verbs) (Pesetsky 1995, Arad 1998), contrary to what predicted by the UTAH (Baker 1988). Traditionally, Subj-Exp verbs have been analysed as transitive, while Obj-Exp verbs as unaccusative (Belletti&Rizzi 1988). In the present work, new empirical data contrasting this hypothesis will be presented and an alternative account for their special behaviour with respect to different diagnostics will be proposed. In particular, the claim will be made that the interplay between the semantics and the syntax of psych-verbs plays a crucial role in their derivation and that the linear differences between different classes of psych-verbs are the superficial manifestation of different syntactic derivations. More specifically, it will be shown that the Subj-Exp vs. Obj-Exp distinction is related the absence vs. presence, respectively, of a causative zero-morpheme.
Nella letteratura è stato ampiamente osservato come i verbi psicologici presentino delle proprietà peculiari in quanto all‘assegnazione dei ruoli tematici, poiché l‘Esperiente può essere realizzato sia come soggetto (Subj-Exp verbs) che come oggetto (Obj-Exp verbs) (Pesetsky 1995, Arad 1998), a differenza di quanto previsto dalla UTAH (Baker 1988). Nell‘ambito di tale classificazione, i verbi psicologici a soggetto esperiente sono stati tradizionalmente analizzati come transitivi, mentre quelli a oggetto esperiente sono stati analizzati come inaccusativi (Belletti&Rizzi 1988). Nel presente lavoro verranno presentati nuovi dati empirici che contraddicono tale analisi e verrà avanzata un‘ ipotesi alternativa circa il comportamento speciale di questi verbi rispetto a diversi test diagnostici. In particolare, si proporrà che l‘interazione tra sintassi e semantica dei verbi psicologici svolge un ruolo particolare nella loro derivazione e che le differenze lineari tra le diverse classi sono in realtà la manifestazione superficiale di derivazioni sintattiche distinte. Nello specifico, si dimostrerà come la distinzione tra verbi psicologici a soggetto od oggetto esperiente sia in realtà da correlarsi alla presenza o assenza, rispettivamente, di uno speciale morfema causativo nullo.

When looking for some causes, it is found that for 21 countries in the period 1997-2011, the growth rate of per capita GDP is positively related to initial human capital (proxied by the growth rate of tertiary school enrolments) and the research and development expenditure. Moreover Italy has some other typical characteristics: high deficit, increasing labor cost, high tax wedge, lack of innovation and some other structural problems.

L'elaborato analizza i problemi riscontrati tra badanti e famiglie (datori di lavoro) al fine di evidenziare possibili soluzioni che aiutino migliorare la comunicazione tra le parti e quindi la vita e il lavoro di entrambi. i dati raccolti si riferiscono alla realtà locale del Bellunese. infine il lavoro confronta le esigenze dei badanti e delle famiglie dal punto di vista dell'insegnamento della lingua e cultura con il programma offerto dal corso per badanti del CTP di Belluno.

Esta pesquisa surgiu do anseio de ampliar a presença da poesia de Umberto Saba no Brasil. Decidimos, por isso, selecionar e traduzir alguns de seus poemas, usando como critério de escolha o estudo da obra poética do triestino a partir da abordagem mais frequente: a relação entre o sujeito lírico e a cidade de Trieste. Escolhemos esse recorte porque acreditamos que ele possibilita fornecer uma visão abrangente da obra do autor, haja vista que, a partir dessa relação, muitas outras questões importantes para a compreensão de sua poesia podem ser estudadas, em especial aquelas questões engendradas no que denominamos de poética da vida. Com a expressão poética da vida, buscamos evidenciar uma tendência perceptível na poesia de Saba: a abertura para o que ele denomina de calda vita (vida quente), a vida percebida em toda a sua variedade, incluindo os momentos de dor e sofrimento. Nesse percurso, estudamos a relação sujeito/cidade tendo como norte a interpenetração entre a interioridade do sujeito e a matéria do mundo e, a partir daí, estabelecemos a comparação entre alguns traços da poética de Saba e de Baudelaire, mas também de Pascoli, Leopardi e dos Crepusculares. Tratamos também da temática do olhar, do desejo, das pulsões e da memória, as quais perpassam a relação sujeito/cidade. Abordamos ainda os principais aspectos formais que caracterizam a poesia do triestino, como, entre outros, a narratividade e o prosaísmo, os quais estão ligados ao que a crítica denomina realismo de Saba (a representação de cenas, fatos e personagens do cotidiano).
This research arose out of the will of spreading the presence of Umberto Sabas poetry in Brazil. We decided, thus, to select and translate some of his poems, using as a choice criterion the study of the poetical work of the italian poet out of the most frequent approach: the relation between his poetic persona and the city of Trieste. We have chosen this framing because we believe it enables a more embracing view of the work of the writer, since, from that relation, we can study many other important questions that may guide us to the comprehension of his poetry, specially those questions engendered in what we name here poetic of the life. With the expression poetic of the life, we seek to make a trend in Sabas poetry more evident: the openness to what he calls calda vita (warm life), the life realized in all its variety, including those moments of suffer and pain. In such path, we study the relation subject/city having as a north the interrelationship between the inner subject and the world matter, and from then, we establish a comparison among some features of Sabas and Baudelaires poetry, but also Pascolis, Leopardis and the Crepusculares. We also talk about the theme of the visual sense, of the desire, drives and memory, which are intertwined in the relation self/city. We talk, moreover, about the main formal aspects that characterize the poetry of the Italian, as, among others, the narrativity and the prosaicism, which are connected to what the critics call Sabas realism (the representation of scenes, facts and daily characters.)

Nell’attuale contesto economico mondiale, le tecniche di internazionalizzazione produttiva crescono inarrestabilmente. Cresce il volume di esportazioni ed investimenti diretti esteri, così come il numero dei settori produttivi e dei mercati coinvolti. L’Italia, tuttavia, è da sempre incapace di prendere parte, con successo, a questi processi. L’industria italiana è strutturalmente incapace di fare della tecnologia e dell’innovazione il suo punto di forza verso l’estero. A ciò si aggiunge la piccola dimensione delle imprese nazionali, inadeguata a sostenere la concorrenza del mercato mondiale. Benché l’aggravarsi della crisi economica abbia portato rinnovamento in tale struttura, le imprese da sole non possono ancora farcela. Esse necessitano di un aiuto esterno che supporti i costi finanziari, copra i rischi di insuccesso, e le indirizzi verso destinazioni strategiche fornendo assistenza. Infine, la promozione internazionale delle capacità del tessuto imprenditoriale italiano è altrettanto fondamentale. Molti sono gli enti, pubblici e privati, impegnati nell'elargire questo tipo di aiuto. Vanno obbligatoriamente citati il Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico, il Ministero degli Affari Esteri, l’ICE Agenzia, e la rete camerale italiana nel suo complesso.

L’innovazione tecnologica e lo sviluppo dei nuovi dispositivi digitali ha permesso la creazione di nuovi mercati e di nuove opportunità di lavoro. Una fra questi è la gig-economy, chiamata anche ‘economia dei lavoretti’. L’idea è quella di utilizzare il tempo libero o i momenti buchi della giornata di una persona per lavori della durata di poche ore o che possono essere svolti da remoto tramite una connessione internet. Ciò è dovuto alla nascita delle piattaforme digitali che hanno messo in contatto una domanda estremamente ampia e varia con un’offerta di gig-worker in cerca di un reddito aggiuntivo o di sfruttare le proprie capacità in maniera proficua. Questo fenomeno è in enorme espansione e all’interno di esso il food delivery system sembra essere il comparto con le migliori prospettive. Nel 2019 a livello mondiale il settore conta un giro d’affari di US$108 miliardi. Ciò è stato reso possibile grazie alla nascita delle piattaforme digitali che mettono in contatto ristoranti con clienti, favorendo un servizio comodo e conveniente. L’elaborato verte sull’analisi del settore del food delivery come realtà economica emergente e sulle piattaforme di food delivery come principali attori economici. In particolare, si sono analizzate le performance, i mercati di riferimento e le strategie competitive. Queste realtà emergenti operano in un costante stato di tensione poiché il mercato è colmo di competitor nazionali e internazionali che offrono un servizio indifferenziato ad un costo differente. Nel tentativo di raggiungere la posizione di top of mind, spesso queste piattaforme sono costrette a spendere enormi quantità di denaro in marketing accettando anche bilanci di fine anno negativi. Lo scopo dell’elaborato è di proporre una spiegazione di come si evolverà il mercato e di quali piattaforme vinceranno questa lotta per la conquista nel mercato italiano.

A presente dissertação constitui-se da análise das traduções brasileiras do século XX da obra italiana I Fioretti di San Francesco. Através da análise das escolhas lexicais dos tradutores, e tomando a tradução como um ato lingüístico metonímico, procura-se apresentar as diferentes leituras de I Fioretti disponíveis ao público brasileiro: uma mais rebuscada e clericalizada, porém mais atenta ao original como obra de valor literário; outra mais simples e mais acessível, apesar de menos atenta ao caráter literário do original.
The present dissertation is an analysis of the 20th century Brazilian translations of I Fioretti di San Francesco. Through the analysis of the translators lexical choices, and taking translation as a metonimic linguistic act, it intends to present the different readings of I Fioretti available to the Brazilian readers : one more far-fetched and clericalized, but more attentive to the original as a book with literary value ; another more simple and accessible though less sensitive to the literary aspect of the original.

This thesis begins with the arrival of thousands of Italian immigrants in Australia during the early stages of Arthur Calwell’s post-war mass immigration program. Their arrival was greeted with widespread anxiety reflecting cultural, racial, religious and economic tensions. The post-war assimilationist policy, which privileged Anglo-Australian culture, language and identity, assumed that Italians and Italian culture would be absorbed into Australian society. These assumptions were challenged through the presence of the new symbols of italianità on the streets of Sydney, as film, design, fashion and cuisine made their mark on society. The screening and reception of Italian film is an important and often overlooked cultural marker at the centre of a period of dynamic cultural exchange in Sydney between 1948 and 1971. This thesis argues that Italian cinema and the diaspora reshaped the nature and culture of post-war Sydney, and in turn, the perception of Italian identity

This work investigates the expanding phenomenon of Italian Sounding, a formula used to describe the practice by foreign brands of associating their products with “made in Italy” although being produced in other countries. We examine the phenomenon starting from the country of origin effect, widely discussed in literature and through which IT sounding can be explained in its basic dynamics. Furthermore, we will derive the concept of Brand Name Origin from the COE (country of origin effect), with frameworks explaining how companies can achieve a correct and beneficial alignment to the country image most suited for their product categories. After introducing the strengths of Made in Italy productions and better describing the Italian Sounding, the work will focus on the agro-food industry, listing the most copied products and providing an overview of data from the countries more sensitive to the problem. In the final chapters the problem will be described in the context of Canada, a country where Italian presence and culture have always been extremely preserved since the arrival of 1900s immigrants and where IT sounding has deep roots across society and business environment. With the help of a relevant empirical framework, the study will show how IT sounding companies can induce in the consumer the Made in Italy association.

O trabalho apresenta uma análise da atual linguagem ligada à alimentação falada por imigrantes italianos em Pedrinhas Paulista, pequena comunidade italiana fundada nos anos \'50, localizada no interior do Estado de São Paulo. Utiliza, para tanto, depoimentos colhidos na própria comunidade em 2002 e em 2005. Os trechos destacados para a pesquisa foram transcritos obedecendo as normas para transcrição do projeto NURC. Que língua seria mais usada pelos imigrantes quando se trata de referências alimentares: o italiano ou o português? Os italianos mantiveram a tradição da sua gastronomia? Mantiveram o léxico original das suas preparações? Absorveram, em parte ou não, os hábitos alimentares locais e sua terminologia na língua local? Os imigrantes criaram uma interlíngua italiano-dialeto-português? Essas e outras questões serão levantadas e analisadas no decorrer do trabalho
The present study is an analysis of the language spoken by Italian immigrants living in Pedrinhas Paulista. This small community was founded in the 50\'s, and is located in rural Sao Paulo state. The analysis utilizes depositions from the community in 2002 and in 2005. Deposition excerpts chosen for the study were transcribed observing the NURC Project norms. Which language was spoken by the immigrants when discussing nutritional matters: Italian or Portuguese? Did the Italians maintain their gastronomic traditions? Did they change their recipes? Did they acquire local eating habits and their local terminology? If so, did they do it partially or completely? Did the Italian immigrants create an Italian-dialect-Portuguese interlanguage? These and other questions will be raised during the present study

Dante Alighieri is, undoubtedly, an enduring feature of the cultural memory of generations of Italians. His influence is such that the mere mention of a ‘dark wood’ or ‘life’s journey’ recalls the poet and his most celebrated work, the Divina Commedia. This study, however, seeks to examine the construction of the medieval Florentine poet, exemplified by the above assertion, as a potent symbol of the Italian nation. From the creation of the idea of the Italian nation during the Risorgimento, to the Liberal ruling elite’s efforts after 1861 to legitimise the new Italian nation state, and more importantly to ‘make Italians’, to the rise of a more imperialist conception of nationalism in the early twentieth century and its most extreme expression under the Fascist regime, Dante was made to play a significant role in defining, justifying and glorifying the Italian nation. Such an exploration of the utilisation of Dante in the construction of Italian national identity during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries aids considerably in an understanding of the conceptualisation of the Italian nation, of the issues engendered by the establishment of the Italian nation state, and the evolution of these processes throughout the period in question. The various images of Dante revealed by this investigation of his instrumentalisation in the Italian process of nation-building bear only a fleeting resemblance to what is known of the poet in his medieval reality. Dante was born in 1265 to a family of modest means and standing in Florence, at that time the economic centre of Europe, and one of the most important cities of the Italian peninsula. His writings disclosed, however, that he was little impressed by his city’s prestige and wealth, being instead greatly disturbed by its political discord and instability, of which he became an unfortunate victim. The violent partisan conflict in Florence and the turbulent political condition of the Italian peninsula in the late thirteenth century had a decisive influence on Dante’s life and literary endeavours.

This thesis reappraises Gramsci’s thought. It notes a discrepancy between his analysis and proposed reforms of the Italian ruling class and his Marxist proposals for the social transformation. Gramsci aimed to remedy the Italian ‘crisis’ by incorporating the masses into the ruling class and responding to their demands that others had neglected. By contrast, Gramsci’s Marxism aimed to achieve a communist society by overriding the very political distinction between the ruling class and the ruled, upon which this programme was based. If the former signifies that ‘everybody can govern,’ the latter suggests that ‘everybody actually governs.’ Chapters 1-3 demonstrate how Gramsci consistently focused on the demands of the Southern peasants as the largest group among the Italian masses. He argued that their call for agrarian reform had not been represented since the Risorgimento, stifled by stigmatisation and common sense of a Catholic origin to uphold the status quo. Chapters 4-5 show how Gramsci’s reformist programme aimed at representing these demands and shaped his concepts of hegemony and the ethical state. However, he also elaborated these concepts in Marxist terms as a way of establishing a communist society. Gramsci’s reform sought to recruit the masses into the ruling class and recreate a stable and ‘hegemonic’ relation between the two. Doing so necessitated the ‘ethical state,’ which would narrow the educational gap between the two groups and enable the masses to acquire the intellectual resources needed for politics. However, this programme was incompatible with his Marxist notion of hegemony, which conceived the ‘Modern Prince’ as a totalitarian party capable of replacing parliamentarism, and of the ethical state as a ‘regulated society’ identical to the communist utopia. As Chapter 6 illustrates, by seeking a comprehensive transformation of capitalist and class-divided societies, his Marxism overrode the very distinction involved in his proposed political reform.

Lo scopo della mia tesi è presentare al lettore un’analisi delle metodologie di insegnamento e dell’apprendimento della lingua inglese in un istituto tecnico italiano – dove ho svolto lo stage come assistente degli insegnanti di inglese – e come questo viene percepito dagli studenti stessi. Il primo capitolo introduce il quadro teorico degli studi sull’apprendimento e l’insegnamento delle lingue straniere, focalizzandosi in particolare sugli aspetti di cui ho tenuto conto durante il mio periodo di osservazione. Il secondo capitolo presenta le attività che ho svolto, il materiale che ho usato e il questionario finale proposto agli studenti per raccogliere i loro pensieri sugli stessi aspetti. Il terzo capitolo presenta i risultati delle mie attività di osservazione e del questionario, attraverso un confronto diretto classe per classe. Il quarto capitolo riassume, risponde alle domande di partenza e conclude il lavoro.

The following thesis investigates the need to decolonise the Italian museum institution that still does not adequately represent the community of Afro-Italian artists. The issue of inclusivity and equal representation in art institutions is not new, and has been highlighted since the last century, underlying the presence of an art system characterised by the privileging of some social groups and the marginalisation of others. In the specific case of Italy, the problem of decolonisation is rooted in Italy's colonial past, which we talk about too little and which still conditions the present with dynamics of exclusion towards otherness and the persistent idea of an Italian identity that does not take into account its multi-ethnic composition. The ethnographic museum, a symbol of European colonialism par excellence, can be a good starting point for the decolonial debate in Italy, as it is showing that it is coming to terms with its colonial responsibilities and therefore could also be a valid example for contemporary art museums. Indeed, the inclusion of Afro-Italian artists in Italian contemporary art museums is almost absent but their invisibility in the system of art institutions is present in Italian society in general, where Afro-descendants are invisible in the eyes of society because of their blackness but at the same time their appearance makes them easy targets for prejudice and discrimination. This is a problem that Italian society struggles to recognise, pointing the finger at countries such as the United States that are usually the reference point when it comes to racial issues and discrimination against black people. The United States is certainly a curious case to analyse in this sense if we consider its huge African-American community and the struggles it has faced to obtain equal civil rights, even in the art system. Although the United States has experienced significant collective mobilisations throughout history and its activism has inspired the whole world, its art institutions are still trying to improve in terms of inclusivity and equal representation just as Italy is doing; the difference is that Italy has practically just started. The thesis will present some examples of Italian contemporary art museums and cultural initiatives that show a willingness to change direction, considering their strengths but also their limitations, and finally, the case studies of three Afro-Italian artists with a focus on their artistic production and an insight into the black presence in Italian museums from their perspective as protagonists of the art system.

Esta pesquisa visa a estudar, na língua italiana, a ocorrência de um tipo particular de construção, a saber, as construções verbais paratáticas (CVPs, daqui em diante). As construções focalizadas nesta pesquisa formam-se a partir de dois ou mais verbos flexionados, conectados ou não pela conjunção e, como por exemplo: se ne va e piange (vai-se chora), prendo e me ne vado (pego e vou-me embora). Nossa investigação inicial consistiu na documentação destas construções a partir de corpora do italiano. Todavia, considerando que o estudo das CVPs é incipiente no italiano, sua descrição e análise ainda carecem de um estudo exaustivo, que vise à análise de sua estrutura e função. Desse modo, nosso objetivo é aprofundar o trabalho iniciado em nível de iniciação científica, com foco nas seguintes questões: estatuto categorial das CVPs como um tipo de predicação complexa não previsível no âmbito da gramática do italiano contemporâneo (a saber, serialização verbal); e gramaticalização, tendo em vista os processos de mudança envolvidos na emergência dessa construção. Nossa hipótese é a de que as CVPs sejam consideradas como construções de foco. Adotamos os pressupostos teóricos da gramática funcional, visto que esta pesquisa tem por objetivo estudar a língua em uso. Dentro do funcionalismo, cabe estudar outros pontos caros a este trabalho, como: a estrutura informacional, a categorização, a gradiência da predicação complexa, a auxiliaridade e a serialização verbal. A metodologia empregada aqui consta da análise dos dados coletados a partir dos corpora CORIS e LABLITA (do projeto C-ORAL-ROM), além de buscas na web a partir do site google, sendo que foi efetuada uma pesquisa quantitativa sobre estes dados com uso do programa GOLDVARB. This work aims to study, in Italian, the occurrence of a particular type of construction, which are the paratactic verbal constructions (PVCs, henceforth). The constructions focused in this research are formed by two or more verbs inflected, connected or not by the conjunction and, as in: se ne va e piange (go and cry), prendo e me ne vado (I take and go away). Our initial investigation consisted in the documentation of these constructions through corpora from Italian. However, considering that the study of the PVCs are incipient in Italian, its description and analysis still need an exhaustive study, which aims the analysis of its structure and function. Therefore, our objective is to deepen the work begun in scientific initiation level, focusing in the following questions: categorial status of the PVCs as a type of complex predicate not predictable in the ambit of the contemporary Italian grammar (as verbal serialization); and grammaticalization, due to the processes of change involved in the emergence of this construction. Our hypothesis is that the PVCs are considered as focus constructions. We adopt the theoretical presuppositions of the funcional grammar, since this research has as an objective to study the language in use.
