L’emigrazione, mai interrotta, è da sempre una peculiarità dell’Italia. Negli ultimi anni, i protagonisti dei flussi in uscita sono però diversi sia culturalmente sia linguisticamente da quelli dei secoli scorsi. Nonostante questo cambiamento, continua ancora l’assistenza spirituale e sociale che la Chiesa cattolica italiana dà ai connazionali all’estero. Dal momento che la sua missione si realizza attraverso la lingua e il suo credo si fonda sulla Parola, la Chiesa si interessa molto alla questione linguistica. In questo contributo verranno presentati i risultati di un’indagine condotta mediante interviste e osservazioni partecipanti in due città della Germania – paese che, almeno da tre anni, è al secondo posto sia per nuovi arrivi di italiani sia per comunità italiana residente – con lo scopo di individuare la consapevolezza della Chiesa italiana in Germania circa i cambiamenti sociali, linguistici e culturali apportati dalla neoemigrazione. Italian neo-emigration in a religious context: a study in Germany Continuous emigration has always been a distinctive feature of Italy. In recent years, however, Italian emigrants have distinguished themselves both culturally and linguistically from the previous migratory flows of Italians. Despite this change, the spiritual and social assistance that the Italian Catholic Church gives to its fellow countrymen abroad is still ongoing. Furthermore, the Italian Catholic Church is particularly interested in the linguistic dimensions, given the fact that its mission is carried out through language and its creed is based on words. This paper aims to identify the awareness of the Italian Church in Germany about the social, linguistic and cultural changes brought about by the new emigration flows from Italy, presenting the results of a survey conducted through interviews and participant observations in two cities in Germany, a country which, for at least three years, has been in second place both in terms of the number of new arrival of Italians and the ones already emigrated.

In questo saggio ci si propone di analizzare le varie tecniche della formazione delle parole, nelle quali l’inglese gioca un ruolo importante; per tale scopo si esamina il corpus di articoli tratti dalle prime pagine de La Stampa nei primi dieci giorni di gennaio degli anni 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 e 2010. L’analisi dei dati rivela che nel campo della formazione delle parole l’inglese gioco un ruolo importante: alcune parole sono state create da parole inglesi con l’aggiunta di un suffisso o un prefisso italiano oppure con la composizione di due elementi (uno italiano e un altro inglese) in un unico significante. L’influsso più significativo è, a nostro avviso, quello che riguarda la modifica strutturale di alcune parole italiane composte con l’ordine ‘Dnte + Dto’ tipico dell’inglese. This essay aims to analyze how and where English methods of word formation participates in Italian word formation. Results are achieved by examining a specific corpus made up of articles taken from the first pages of La Stampa and written during the first ten days of January in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010. The analysis reveals how important English is in Italian word formation: new Italian words are be formed by adding prefixes and suffixes to an English word or by combining words. In our opinion, the typical English sequence ‘Dnte+Dnto’ is one of the most significant methods of Italian word formation and it shows how English influences Italian so far.

Very little is known about Domenico De Vivo (1839-1897). He was a disciple of the Italian linguist Giacomo Lignana and worked as a professor of Russian and English language at the Asiatic College in Naples from 1868 to 1870, and then as an Italian language lecturer at the universities of Dorpat and Odessa in the Russian Empire from 1879 until his death in 1897. De Vivo championed his ideas on language teaching and learning in his books Grammatica della lingua russa [Russian Grammar for Italians] (Dorpat, 1882) and Prakticheskoe rukovodstvo dlya izucheniya ital’yanskogo yazyka [A Practical Guide to Learning Italian] (Odessa, 1886; Odessa, 1890), and in his Dizionario Italiano-Russo. Slovar’ ital’yansko-russkiy [Italian-Russian Dictionary] (Odessa 1894). The purpose of this article is to examine De Vivo’s life and works, which represent the first recorded attempt – in De Vivo’s own words – “to promote Russian language learning in Italy and Italian language learning in Russia.”

Modality expresses high probability and total degree through boosters (Halliday 1985,Holmes 1990). Through them, writers reinforce statements with the assurance of reliableknowledge (cf. Hyland 1998b). This study compares the usage of boosting emphasizers (e.g. certainly) and intensifiers (e.g. completely) (cf. Quirk et al. 1985) and their orientation and manifestation (cf. Halliday & Matthiessen 2014) in Albanian and Italian student academic writings in L1 and English as an L2. I compiled an Italian and an Italian English corpus (around 3 million words each) as well as an Albanian corpus (around 2.2 million words) and Albanian English one (around 700,000 words). The corpora are comparable in terms of genre, disciplinary domain, gender and the division of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ sciences. Since very little research has been conducted on academic writing in Albania (Toska 2015), it is essential to initiate research in this field. The results showed that boosters were significantly favored in Italian and Italian English and less favored in Albanian. Conclusively, Italians show more commitment than Albanians.

Resumen El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar el fenómeno de la intertextualidad en el ámbito de la traducción de la literatura infantil y juvenil en general y en el campo de la traducción audiovisual en particular. Nuestro punto de partida es el análisis de los referentes intertextuales presentes en la película Donkey Xote (José Pozo, 2007) y en su versión para doblaje en italiano. Tras identificar las dificultades y las estrategias de traducción de la “intertextualidad audiovisual” (Martínez Sierra, 2010; Chaume, 2012), presentaremos algunos referentes intertextuales añadidos en italiano para implicar de manera más directa al espectador (adulto) italiano. De hecho, la versión italiana introduce alusiones inherentes al mundo cinematográfico estadounidense e italiano inexistentes en el TO con un afán de tipo humorístico evidente. Palabras clave: intertextualidad, traducción, doblaje, literatura infantil y juvenil Abstract The aim of the present paper is to analyse the intertextuality in the field of Translation of Children’s Literature and specially in Audiovisual Translation. We analyse the presence of intertextual elements in the Spanish animated film Donkey Xote (José Pozo, 2007) and in the Italian dubbing. After the identification of the difficulties and the strategies inside the Translation of the so called “audiovisual intertextuality” (Martínez Sierra, 2010; Chaume, 2012), we propose some intertextual elements introduced in the Italian version in order to capture the interest of an adult audience. In others words, the Italian dubbing shows particular allusions regarding American and Italian films that were conceived to create humour. Il contributo si propone di esaminare l’uso degli italianismi nelle campagne pubblicitarie (spot tv e sul web, social media, stampa) realizzate per il mercato estero da aziende italiane particolarmente rinomate nel settore dell’alimentare. L’obiettivo principale dell’indagine è quello di analizzare dal punto di vista linguistico le parole (o le espressioni) di origine italiana (ma anche dialettale/regionale) utilizzate dai grandi marchi (brand) del settore nella comunicazione aziendale per promuovere i propri prodotti in quanto iconici della “vera” italianità. L’idea dell’italianità viene veicolata attraverso immagini, paesaggi, brani musicali, ma spesso anche e soprattutto dall’uso di italianismi. Nel nostro caso, ovviamente, termini per lo più della gastronomia che richiamano il made in Italy e il cosiddetto “vivere all’italiana”. Il successo all’estero di prodotti e cibi tipici della cucina italiana, promossi nelle campagne di food marketing (ideate per i mercati internazionali), rafforza e diffonde nel mondo globalizzato la convinzione dell’esistenza di un legame speciale che unisce l’Italia e l’italiano al “bello” e al “buono”. Nel contributo vengono analizzate le strategie linguistiche e comunicative impiegate per la promozione di prodotti alimentari italiani Si va da scelte più “identitarie”, come per gli spot Barilla per il mercato americano, a spot che vogliono in un certo senso meglio integrarsi nei mercati esteri. Nell’ambito della promozione nei social media è frequente il ricorso a un doppio profilo social, l’uno rivolto al mercato nazionale, l’altro al mercato internazionale; spesso però non si tratta di una mera traduzione dei contenuti dall’italiano all’inglese o viceversa. La programmazione e la scelta dei post, la lunghezza e anche il cosiddetto tone of voice possono variare, così come varia la presenza o meno di italianismi, e al contempo la loro resa. Da ultimo si esporranno riflessioni sul packaging diversificato (linguisticamente) per il mercato italiano e il mercato estero. The ‘Bel Paese’: it’s not just cheese! Italianisms in the language of international food marketing This survey report aims at analysing the use of Italianisms in advertising campaigns (TV and web commercials, social media ads, press) conceived for the foreign markets by Italian companies particularly renowned in the food sector. The main objective of the survey was to analyse from a linguistic point of view the words (or expressions) of Italian origin ( also dialectal/regional) used by the major brands of the sector in their advertising campaigns to promote their products as iconic of the ‘true’ Italian character. The idea of Italianness is conveyed through images, landscapes, music, but also with the use of Italianisms in advertising slogans. In our case-study, culinary terms in particular evoke the idea of ‘made in Italy’ and of the ‘Italian way of life’. The success of the Italian cuisine all over the world, as promoted in food marketing campaigns (designed for international markets), reinforces and spreads in today’s globalised world the conviction of the existence of a special bond linking the words Italy and Italian to something ‘beautiful’ and ‘good’. This study therefore analyses the linguistic and communicative strategies used to promote Italian food products, ranging from more ‘identity’ choices, as in the case of the Barilla adverts for the American market, to adverts that in a certain sense prefer to “speak” the language of foreign markets. In the area of social media advertising, the use of a double social profile is frequent, one particularly aimed at the national market, the other meant for an international market; often, however, it is not a mere translation of the content from Italian into English or vice versa. The scheduling and choice of posts, their length and even the so-called tone of voice may vary, as well as the presence or absence of Italianisms. This report also provides comments and observations on (linguistically) diversified packaging for the Italian and foreign markets.

È un fatto generalmente noto che molte parole di origine italiana sono state inserite in molte lingue europee, quindi anche in ungherese: questa lingua è utilizzata nel bacino dei Carpazi dalla fine del X secolo e tra lItalia e l’Ungheria i rapporti politico-economici-culturali (grazie anche alla distanza geografica relativamente ridotta) erano e sono, in ogni tempo, molto vivaci e stretti. La presenza di italianismi nella lingua ungherese nell’importante progetto lessicale comparativo denominato OIM, promosso dall’Accademia della Crusca di Firenze, è testimoniata, da un lato, dalle molte centinaia di parole (in molti casi polisemiche) di origine italiana presenti nella lingua ungherese e, dall’altro, dal gran numero di studi che descrivono l’argomento in generale e in molti casi concreti. In questa breve sintesi vengono trattati i più importanti studi linguistici su singole parole italiane “importate” nella lingua ungherese (par. 3) e vengono proposti anche alcuni punti di vista e criteri (par. 4) per controllare e rendere più omogenee le descrizioni semantiche elaborate dai linguisti - esperti delle lingue, incluse nel progetto OIM. Words of Italian origin in the Hungarian language: brief history of the issue and inclusion of material in the OIM project It is a generally known fact that many words of Italian origin has been entered in many European languages, so in Hungarian too: this language is used in the Carpathian Basin from the end of the X century and between Italy and Hungary the political-economic-cultural relations (thanks of the relatively little geographical distance, too) were and are, in all times, very lively and close. The presence of italianismi in the Hungarian language in the important comparative lexical project named OIM, promoved by the Accademia della Crusca in Florence, gives evidence, on the one hand, from the many hundreds of (in many cases polysemous) words of Italian origin in the Hungarian language, and on the other, from the great number of studies describing the argument in generally and many concrete cases, too. In this short summary are briefly treated the most important linguistic studies about single Italian words “imported” in the Hungarian language (par. 3.) and there are proposed some point of views and criteria, too (par. 4), to control and to make more homogeneous the semantic descriptions elaborated by the linguists - experts of the languages, included in the OIM-project.

Cross-linguistic similarities and differences in early lexical and grammatical development are reported for 1001 English-speaking children and 386 Italian-speaking children between 1;6 and 2;6. Parents completed the English or Italian versions of the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory: Words and Sentences, a parent report instrument that provides information about vocabulary size, vocabulary composition and grammatical complexity across this age range. The onset and subsequent growth of nouns, predicates, function words and social terms proved to be quite similar in both languages. No support was found for the prediction that verbs would emerge earlier in Italian, although Italians did produce a higher proportion of social terms, and there were small but intriguing differences in the shape of the growth curve for grammatical function words. A strikingly similar nonlinear relationship between grammatical complexity and vocabulary size was observed in both languages, and examination of the order in which function words are acquired also yielded more similarities than differences. However, a comparison of the longest sentences reported for a subset of children demonstrates large cross-linguistic differences in the amount of morphology that has been acquired in children matched for vocabulary size. Discussion revolves around the interplay between language-specific variations in the input to young children, and universal cognitive and social constraints on language development.

The article is about the observation of the interfering influence of the Italian language on the formation of plural forms in the Russian speech of Italians, which can lead to the erroneous formation of plural forms from the Russian words singularia tantum. The purpose of this study is to establish the main linguistic causes existing in the Russian and Italian languages, which are the basis for the occurrence or absence of such type of interference and related errors; which, in turn, allows us to understand the nature of errors in the speech of non-native speakers. The research was conducted on the material of authentic translated texts written by Italians for educational and other purposes. The relevance of the topic is due, on the one hand, to the frequency of the formation of plural forms from the words singularia tantum in the Russian speech of Italians; on the other hand, the need for a clear understanding of the linguistic nature of such errors. It is important to emphasize the unsystematic nature of the formation of number forms in nouns in Russian and Italian, as well as the unsystematic nature of grammatical litters describing the category of numbers in bilingual and explanatory dictionaries, which creates a significant methodological difficulty.

In this article it is argued that the discussion about the effects of cognates on the acquisition of vocabulary should not be limited to cognatepairs in L1 and L2, but should also take into account the possible knowledge of cognates in other languages. Beginning students of Italian L2 scored equally well in the interpretation of Italian words with cognates in Dutch and English as in the interpretation of Italian words with cognates in English but not in Dutch. Between students without any knowledge of Italian and students with some minimal knowledge ('a holiday in Italy') there was a signficant difference in the number of correctly interpreted words. Since the words had a low frequency rate, the difference is attributed to a greater awareness of Italian wordform in general. This implies that awareness of morphological regularities is formed in the initial stages of the acquisition process and is actively used in interpretation of words. Transparancy is also a factor in the interpretation of new words. The results seem to confirm the hypothesis that cognates in which Italian morphology determines only the ending of the word are easier to recognise than words with discrepancies in stem and ending.

L’articolo propone l’analisi linguistica degli italianismi presenti nel doppiaggio in lingua originale del film d’animazione Disney Pixar “Luca”, ambientato nell’Italia del 1959 e uscito sulla piattaforma streaming Disney+ nell’estate del 2021. Tale ricerca ha avuto lo scopo di verificare quale immagine della lingua e della cultura italiane venga veicolata dal film e quali siano gli stereotipi culturali sul nostro Paese maggiormente diffusi nel mondo, in particolare nel contesto anglo-americano. Sono state prese in considerazione due categorie di italianismi, quelli lessicali e quelli fraseologici e morfosintattici. Ciò che è emerso dall’indagine è che la maggioranza dei termini e delle locuzioni italiane presenti nel film contribuisce a rafforzare alcuni stereotipi sulla nostra nazione, legati agli ambiti semantici in cui l’influenza italiana nel mondo è risultata da sempre predominante: l’enogastronomia, la cultura musicale e cinematografica, l’espressività verbale e gestuale particolarmente marcata. This paper provides a linguistic analysis of the italian words and phrases occurred in the original dubbing of the Disney Pixar featured film "Luca", set in Italy in 1959 and appeared on the Disney+ streaming platform in the summer of 2021. This research aimed to verify which image of the Italian language and culture is conveyed by the movie and what are the most widespread Italian stereotypes in the world, especially in the USA.. What emerged from the survey is that the majority of Italian terms and phrases in the film contribute to reinforce some of the stereotypes about Italy, most of all in the semantic spheres in which the italian culture influence has always been predominant, as food and wine, music and cinema, verbal and gestural expressiveness particularly marked.

ABSTRACTThe present study evaluates the contribution of visuo-gestural modality versus linguistic factors in determining the order of elements in sign language. The same picture description task was given to 12 hearing subjects using spoken Italian, 12 deaf subjects using Italian Sign Language, and 12 hearing subjects using pantomime. Nonreversible, reversible, and locative productions with two elements were elicited. The results showed that Italian Sign Language differs along significant lines from both spoken Italian and pantomime. The pattern of similarities and differences found among the three experimental conditions allows us to argue that the order of signs in the sentence is sensitive to modality as well as linguistic factors depending on the particular sentence structures considered.

This examination expects to break down the diverse way by which Way of Vocal action words are understood in English and Italian. Following Talmy's differentiation between Satellite-outlined and Verb-outlined dialects, we target exhibiting how the semantic data passed on by these action words might be lost or advanced when changing from English into Italian. To do as such, four contemporary English books just as their Italian interpretations were considered. 83 English MoS action words were distinguished for a sum of 776 events. Their Italian partners (148 among action words and multi-word developments) were in this way dissected inside the Generative Lexicon model (Pustevjosky, 1998). As per our outcomes, English and Italian show a serious level of granularity in the semantic acknowledgment of Way of Vocalaction words. Also, inside this space, the resistance between a Satellite-outlined language like English and a Verb-outlined language like Italian is by all accounts obscured, since the two dialects, as a general rule, pick to conflate Way in the action word root.

This study examined the recognition of English words by groups of native speakers of Italian who differed in age of arrival in Canada and amount of continued native language use. The dependent variable was the number of words correctly repeated in English sentences presented in noise. Significantly higher word recognition scores were obtained for early than late bilinguals, and for early bilinguals who used Italian seldom than for early bilinguals who used Italian relatively often. A hierarchical regression analysis showed that the native Italian participants' ability to perceive English vowels and consonants accounted for a significant amount of variance in the word-recognition scores independently of age of arrival, amount of L1 use, and length of residence in Canada. The native language use effect was interpreted to have arisen from differences in the extent to which the early bilinguals' Italian phonetic system influenced the representations they developed for English vowels and consonants.

Two indices of automatic orthographic processing, the word and pseudoword superiority effects, were explored in native Italian speakers familiar with English (late learners) and native English-speaking controls unfamiliar with Italian. Participants performed a forced-choice letter identification task with five categories of words: Italian words and pseudowords, English words and pseudowords, and nonwords. Native Italian speakers showed superiority effects for both languages, whereas English-speaking controls showed superiority effects only for English. These results suggest that orthographic processing can become automatic with extensive training in late bilinguals.

Dapprima si introducono le diverse modalità con cui i prestiti linguistici entrano e si adattano al sistema linguistico cinese, di seguito si presentano gli approcci della ricerca e i dati raccolti, insieme alle informazioni di catalogazione inserite nella banca dati. Infine, si offrono due esempi concreti, mafia e Rinascimento, due parole altamente rappresentative del contesto storico e sociale italiano. ITALIANISMS IN THE CHINESE LANGUAGE Detecting the presence of Italian words in Chinese is a demanding issue due to the various historical, socio-cultural and geographical factors involved. This article presents the first results of the Chinese research group of the OIM (Osservatorio degli Italianismi nel Mondo ‘Observatory of Italianisms in the World’) project. First, the many ways in which loanwords enter and adapt to the Chinese linguistic system are introduced, followed by a presentation of the research approaches conducted and the data collected, together with the cataloguing information in the database. Finally, two concrete examples are offered, mafia and Rinascimento ‘Renaissance’, two words that are highly representative of Italian historical and social contest.

Abstract The present review essay discusses Antonio Cassese’s book Il diritto internazionale in Italia, which was written in the late 1980s and saw the light only in 2021. Each part of this short and very dense volume contains and triggers significant reflections on various topics that are still extremely relevant to this day, and perhaps now more than ever. The starting point of Professor Cassese’s inquiry is a straightforward question: how is the work of the Italian international lawyers perceived abroad? More in detail, he wonders if and to what extent it is true that the Italian doctrine, which is characterized by unparalleled scientific rigor and in-depth theoretical disquisitions, pays scant or no attention to practical problems and political, economic, and social implications at large. Professor Cassese’s analysis revolves around this initial question but at the same time departs from it in order to offer a wider and extremely accurate overview of its ramifications. In particular, Antonio Cassese helps the reader to better understand the role of international lawyers and the tools at their disposal to contribute to enhancing the society they live and operate in.

ABSTRACTThis study explores the possibility of cross-language activation when bilinguals process number words in their first language (Italian) and their second language (German). Italian monolinguals (Experiment 1), German monolinguals (Experiment 2), and Italian/German bilinguals (Experiment 3) were required to decide the larger of two number words while the unit–decade compatibility effect was examined. For compatible trials the decade and unit comparisons lead to the same response (e.g., 24–67), whereas for incompatible trials the decade and unit comparisons lead to different responses (e.g., 27–64). The regular unit–decade compatibility effect was significant when bilinguals and monolinguals performed the comparison in German. However, this effect was not found when bilinguals and monolinguals performed the task in Italian. In addition, the decade distance played a major role when bilinguals processed in their first language, whereas the unit distance was more important when they worked in their second language. These results indicate that the processing of number words in one language is not modulated by the way bilinguals process number words in their alternative language.

The Italian language and Italian culture have left lasting and profound marks on the languages and cultures of most European countries, including Bulgaria. In many cases, however, we do not see the aspects of this influence and do not know the factors that have led to it. This text examines the main areas of use in which words of Italian origin have a significant presence. We have tried to indicate the historical preconditions and circumstances that lead to the Italian language becoming established in certain thematic areas. We have cited as an example a number of lexical units, some of which are part of everyday Bulgarian, while others are highly specialized terms used by experts in the given field.

Anglophone cultures have had extensive contact with other ethnic groups over the last 200 years and almost always from a position of dominance (Filmer, 2012). In English there are racial slurs for practically every race or ethnic group and swear words are commonly used in English TV dialogues. Translating swear words in movie subtitles pose a translation challenge, which has been studied by scholars such as Soler Pardo (2015), Ávila-Cabrera (2016), Beseghi (2016) and Díaz-Pérez (2020). This paper analyses the translation from English into Italian of wop, eyetie and goombah, three racist epithets used to refer to Italians or people of Italian origin. The data analyzed are taken from the English-Italian parallel corpus of OpenSubtitles (Lison & Tiedemann, 2016), a collection of parallel corpora made up of translated movie subtitles. English subtitles from a variety of movies including these racist epithets are retrieved, together with the corresponding Italian translations, using parallel concordance. The renditions are analyzed with the aim of identifying general trends in the use and in the translation of these racial slurs. In addition, renditions are divided according to moderating variables such as the languages spoken in the film, the film release date, the countries the film was shot in and the genres of the film, to test whether these variables have a significant impact on translation choices.

ABSTRACTThis study explores the communicative use of the gestural and vocal modalities by normally developing Italian children during the transition from one- to two-word speech. We analysed the spontaneous production of 12 children at 1;4 and at 1;8, focusing on the use of two-element combinations of words and/or gestures. Results indicated that use of gesture and gesture-word combinations during the transition to two-word speech is a robust feature of communicative development across a relatively large number of children in a rich gestural culture, and that the number of gesture-word and two-word combinations increased significantly from 1;4 to 1;8. Number of gestures and gesture-word combinations produced at 1;4 was also predictive of total vocal production at 1;8. Findings are discussed in terms of the role of gesture as a transitional device en route to two-word speech.

The article provides a list of 80 Italian loanwords that may be found in Swedish today, from aperitivo to villa: 30 of them are direct loans from Italian, 34 have been imported through French, 16 through German, English or some other Germanic language. We also add a short list of five words formed in Swedish on the basis of an Italian loanword. Our list is based on a corpus of articles published under the category “Italien” on the online version of the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter during the first six months of 2019. For every headword we provide grammatical information, one or more definitions, the date of the first attestation, the first three passages where the lexical unit occurs in a certain meaning, an Italian translation of the passages, additional word forms that are not present in the quoted passages and the total number of occurrences in the corpus. Some comments follow.

Concreteness is a fundamental dimension of word semantic representation that has attracted more and more interest to become one of the most studied variables in the psycholinguistic and cognitive neuroscience literature in the last decade. Concreteness effects have been found at both the brain and the behavioral levels, but they may vary depending on the constraints of the context and task demands. In this study, we collected concreteness norms for English and Italian words presented in different context sentences to allow better control and manipulation of concreteness in future psycholinguistic research. First, we observed high split-half correlations and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, suggesting that our ratings were highly reliable and can be used in Italian- and English-speaking populations. Second, our data indicate that the concreteness ratings are related to the lexical density and accessibility of the sentence in both English and Italian. We also found that the concreteness of words in isolation was highly correlated with that of words in context. Finally, we analyzed differences between nouns and verbs in concreteness ratings without significant effects. Our new concreteness norms of words in context are a valuable source of information for future research in both the English and Italian language. The author analyses around 80 musical terms from Italian that appear in French, English, and Romanian. Music notation is a complex semiotic system in which linguistic signs occupy only a marginal place. Unlike other mixed semiotic systems, made up of words and specific scoring structures (the ‘formulas’ in mathematics, chemistry, physics, etc.), the musical sheets are not only a method of encoding the music text created by a composer, but also a set of directions for the interpreter, a kind of ‘instructions. The musical terms coined in Italian, which “travel” to other languages as loans, show remarkable semantic stability, having the same meaning in the four examined languages. In French and Romanian, the majority of Italian words were adapted to their own phonetic, morphological, and/or lexical systems. Such linguistic adaptions are rarely found in English. French occupies a special place in comparison with English and Romanian, being at times the pathway for the transfer of Italian musical terms. In some cases, the Italian words work as a model for a semantic extension of a similar word already existing in the target languages.

EN This paper focuses on peer written corrective feedback (PWCF), a pedagogic device whose potential appears still underexploited in second language teaching in Italian schools and universities. Specifically, we aim to contribute to the body of research on the benefits of PWCF as a learning activity for the development of metalinguistic reflection in peer-to-peer native/non-native online communication. Using a sample of tandem interactions between US learners of Italian and Italian learners of English, we conducted a qualitative analysis of the explanations of linguistic phenomena provided by native speakers when commenting on errors after giving corrective feedback on their non-native partners’ pieces of L2 writing. The data analysis confirmed that the feedback-discussing tasks pushed native/non-native peers to actively reflect on both source and target language, engaging in metalinguistic discussions and utilizing cross-linguistic knowledge. Este artículo se centra en los beneficios del feedback entre pares para el desarrollo de la reflexión metalingüística. En concreto, se analiza una pequeña muestra de interacciones entre estudiantes estadounidenses de italiano y estudiantes italianos e italianas de inglés que participan en un intercambio a distancia en tándem. Se realiza un análisis cualitativo de las explicaciones de los fenómenos lingüísticos que da el alumnado nativo cuando comenta los errores después de proporcionar feedback correctivo sobre las producciones escritas del alumnado no nativo. El análisis de los datos ha confirmado que las actividades de discusión sobre el feedback han llevado a los participantes a reflexionar activamente tanto sobre la lengua meta como sobre la lengua materna, ayudando a entrenar su conciencia metalingüística. Translating a paper for a conference in Mexico led me to explore translation theory and to search the ethical nuances of presenting in my L2. Moments of cognitive weirdness in the transit from one language to the other illuminated some troubling theoretical problems, such as the invisibility of the traditional translator, the cultural “smoothing” of texts, and the revisionist tendency of translation itself. These in turn led me to query my position as an L1 speaker of English addressing in Spanish an audience in Latin America, and to question even attempting it. Was I an imposter speaking in others' words, or was Spanish gradually becoming my language, too? Along the way, I found myself comparing notes on my emotional relation to Spanish with the writer Jhumpa Lahiri's description of her relation to Italian, her own L2.

The present paper explores the processing of morphologically complex words in L2 Italian by means of as series of masked priming experiments associated with a LDT. We manipulated deadjectival nominalizations in -ità (e.g. velocità < veloce) and in -ezza (e.g. bellezza < bello), that differ in terms of numerosity, productivity (Rainer, 2004) and on surface frequency. Morphological priming effects were evaluated relative to both orthographic and identity conditions and the data revealed significant morphological priming effects emerging for words ending with the most productive suffix (-ità) and having a high surface frequency in Italian. Our data on derivation suggest that similarly to native speakers, L2 learners are sensitive to morphological information, but they integrate it progressively through L2 learning process.

Abstract This paper aims at giving an up-to-date picture of compounding in Italian on the basis of most recent literature. First and foremost, we illustrate the basic units of Italian compounds, including semiwords, and we offer an operational definition of compounding that will be adopted throughout the paper. Secondly, we focus on the crucial issue of the demarcation of compounds: several criteria are given to distinguish compounds from derived words, phrases and also phrasal lexemes. Third, we offer a classification of Italian compounds according to two hierarchically ordered criteria – the grammatical relation between the constituents and the presence/absence of the head – and then we illustrate the main formation patterns that give rise to such compounds. Finally, we discuss crucial theoretical issues such as headedness and the relationship between compounding and inflection.

In written and spoken language, lists are flexible instruments that take on different functions, such as grouping elements in a stable set or suggesting others to come. Umberto Eco perceives lists as a semiotic modality of vertigo-like accumulation, which offers a way to speak of something whose boundaries one does not know and to place a limit upon the entropy of the mass of things (Belknap 2004; Eco 2009). In public discourse, lists are a helpful device to express opinions and slogans in a constrained space (for example, on Twitter) through a cohesive and coherent collection of elements placed on the same level around a semantic area that the recipients must interpret. This article examines how verbal lists exploit two basic textual strategies in Italian public discourse. The first strategy consists of a collection with precise extensional boundaries and no alternative items. The second is an assortment of items that allude to a set of possibilities with nuanced extensional boundaries. Through these two strategies, the recipient can create two textual semiotic modalities due to the inference procedures: lists with a closed textual modality, closed fabula, and lists with an open textual modality, open fabula (Eco 1979a).

In the early twentieth century, Gabriele D’Annunzio successfully proposed tramezzino instead of the English sandwich. Equally successful are some proposals formulated by Bruno Migliorini in the 1930s: autista and regista for the French chauffeur and régisseur. However, the original coinages of Arrigo Castellani in 1987 fail to take root: fubbia for smog, guardabimbi for babysitter, intredima for weekend, velopattino for windsurf, and vendistica for marketing. At the beginning of the 2000s, the volume by Giovanardi, Gualdo, and Coco Italian – English 1-1 reopened the debate among scholars. In 2015 the petition “Dillo in italiano”, launched by Annamaria Testa, achieved enormous success and demonstrated the intolerance of a large part of public opinion towards the massive influx of anglicisms. Following the petition, the Accademia della Crusca established the Incipit Group, a group of experts responsible for monitoring the entry of new anglicisms and suggesting possible Italian alternatives. In 2017, the Nuovo Devoto-Oli dictionary included in its lemmary the section Per dirlo in italiano, containing over 200 cards, that trace a brief history of as many English words or phrases that have penetrated Italian, explaining their meaning and context of use and suggesting a possible Italian equivalent. Il Nuovo Devoto-Oli broadly welcomes the most common anglicisms, helping those who do not know their precise meaning; but at the same time it has no reluctance to propose an Italian alternative, in the profound belief that such an approach is helpful to the reader and makes a positive contribution to the Italian language itself.

The analysis of special multilingual corpora is still in its infancy, but it may serve a particularly important role for the directions it offers both in cross-linguistic investigation and in the selection of the most typical features of text types and genres. To exemplify the information which can be obtained from corpus evidence, the paper reports on an on-going corpus-driven research project, named Bononia Legal Corpus (BOLC). The main aim of BOLC is to build multilingual machine readable law corpora. Data are at present limited to English and Italian, but an extension is envisaged to include other languages. Before the first sample, a preliminary pilot corpus was constructed to consider European legislation and create a conceptual framework to be used as a first-level experience. In the paper, sections 2 and 3 describe the corpus design and formatting as well as the corpus access tools. Sections 4 and 5 discuss two case studies and analyse two semantic areas which can be seen as two ends of the same variational continuum. At one end, we consider the words contratto and contract, which through the extension of international transactions and circulation may be supposed to have acquired transnational traits. At the other, we focus on a semantic area which may be expected to present translation problems for the differences existing in the two socio-institutional systems. Reference is made to the English words tax and duty and to the Italian words tassa and imposta.

This study examined how tonal prominence impacts the acoustic cues to features of Italian vowels. It was one aspect of an analysis of the LaMIT (Lexical Access Model for Italian) project [Di Benedetto et al., “Speech recognition of spoken Italian based on detection of landmarks and other acoustic cues to distinctive features,” in 179th ASA Meeting, Chicago, IL, 8–12 December (2020)]. We strove to understand and systematize the quantitative changes to vowel quality provoked by prosodic and lexical stress, using the LaMIT corpus (100 Italian sentences recited twice by four speakers). Prominent vowels were classified with the TOBI (Tones and Break Indices) labelling method. Accents deemed tonally prominent, known as “pitch accents,” were starred and given a label that reflected their F0 contours. Labels were limited to those put forth by Avesani (“ToBIt: Un sistema di trascrizione per l’intonazione italiana,” in Atti 5e Giornate di Studio del Gruppo di Fonetica Sperimentale, Povo, Italy, pp. 85–98) as constitutive of the prosody of standard Italian. Labels also marked silences, elisions, and spaces between words. Results will clarify if prominence in Italian induces enhanced vowel sonority, or instead a “hyperarticulation” of distinctive segments, contributing to an ongoing debate on the subject.

Abstract Unlike communities of speakers of other Romance languages such as French and Spanish, it has often been noticed that many Italian speakers are not particularly concerned by the inflow of foreign (mainly English) words. One reason for this, according to some scholars, is that standard Italian does not stir up linguistic identity for many native users, while English enjoys great prestige as the international language. In this paper, positions on neologisms of foreign origin are illustrated, using recently updated monolingual Italian dictionaries and also comments on neologisms collected from blogs and websites. Although they have a different status and degree of representativeness, the latter respond faster than dictionaries to doubts concerning the use of loans in Italian texts.

Infants have remarkable abilities to learn several languages. However, phonological acquisition in bilingual infants appears to vary depending on the phonetic similarities or differences of their two native languages. Many studies suggest that learning contrasts with different realizations in the two languages (e.g., the /p/, /t/, /k/ stops have similar VOT values in French, Spanish, Italian and European Portuguese, but can be confounded with the /b/, /d/, /g/ in German and English) poses a particular challenge. The current study explores how similarity or difference in the realization of phonetic contrasts affects word-learning outcomes. Bilingual infants aged 16 months were tested on their capacity to learn pairs of new words, differing by a phonological feature (voicing versus place) on their initial consonant. Two groups of infants were considered: bilinguals exposed to languages (French and either Spanish, Italian or European Portuguese) in which the contrasts tested are realized relatively similarly (“similar contrast” group) and bilinguals exposed to languages (French and either English or German) in which the contrasts are realized very differently (“different contrast” group). In the present word-learning situation, the “similar contrast” bilinguals successfully processed the relevant phonetic detail of the word forms, while the “different contrast” bilinguals failed. The present pattern reveals the impact on word learning of phonological differences between the two languages, which is consistent with studies reporting slight time course differences among bilinguals in phonological acquisition. In line with a larger literature on bilingual acquisition, these results provide further evidence that linguistic similarity or difference in the two languages influences the pattern of bilingual acquisition.

Italians' zeal for lacing their language with English words is well-known and on-going. Both everyday conversation and the mass media make widespread use of English terms and expressions, but their unphonetic spelling and pronunciation – full of insidious traps round every syllable – can create misunderstanding, confusion, and much humour, because Italians often tend to pronounce these international imports as they are written, much as they do in their mother tongue: either that, or they over-generalize the rules they they've learnt. A TV programme may be interrupted to announce a news flash that however comes out meatier, as ‘news flesh’. When giving business news, the phrase fiscal drag (whatever that may mean) becomes a truly obfuscating ‘fiscal drug’. And fashion news informs us of an exclusive ‘pullover’ by Missoni, whose stress shift unfortunately turns it into an order (from policeman to motorist): ‘pull over’.

To address the negative effects of deafness on spoken language acquisition, many clinicians suggest using cochlear implant (CI) and oral education and advise against sign language, even when combined with spoken language (i.e., bilingualism), believing that it may slow down spoken language development. In a deaf child with CI who was exposed at an early age to Italian Sign Language and spoken Italian, we evaluated language development and the relationship between the two languages. The number of words/signs produced by the child consistently increased with age, and the vocabulary growth rate in spoken Italian was equivalent to that of hearing peers. Before CI, the child relied almost exclusively on sign language; after CI, he gradually shifted to spoken Italian yet still used sign language when unable to retrieve words in spoken Italian. We conclude that bimodal bilingualism may scaffold the development of spoken language also in deaf children with CI.

In this study, stress diacritics were used to investigate the processing of stress information in lexical decision. We ran two experiments in Italian, a language in which stress position is not predictable by rule and only final stress—that is, the less common pattern—is orthographically marked with a diacritic. In Experiment 1, a lexical decision task, two factors were manipulated: the stress pattern of words—antepenultimate (nondominant) and penultimate (dominant)—and the presence/absence of the diacritics, signalling the stress position. Participants were faster to categorise stimuli as words when they bear dominant than nondominant stress. However, the advantage disappeared when the diacritic was used. In Experiment 2, a same-different verification task was used in which participants had to decide if a referent word and a target were same (carota-CAROTA, /ka’rɔta/; tavolo-TAVOLO, /’tavolo/) or different. We compared two conditions requiring a “different” response, in which referent and target with dominant and nondominant stress were congruent (caròta-CAROTA; tàvolo-TAVOLO) or incongruent (càrota-CAROTA; tavòlo-TAVOLO) with the word’s stress. For words with dominant stress, “different” responses were faster in the incongruent condition than the congruent condition. This congruency effect was not observed for words with nondominant stress pattern. Overall, the data suggest that stress information is based on lexical phonology, and the stress dominance effect has a lexical base in word recognition.

This study investigates the effects of two sublexical variables, syllable frequency, and word length, in the spelling acquisition of novice spellers dealing with a transparent orthography, such as Italian. Two groups of 1 st-grade Italian children were tested respectively after 4 and 8 months of schooling, with a spelling-to-dictation task of single words created ad hoc by manipulating syllable frequency orthogonally (high vs low frequency of the first syllable) and length (short vs long words). The results show that after only four months of schooling, children could offset their difficulty in writing long words by taking advantage of the high frequency of the initial syllable. However, the regularity of Italian spelling makes it easy to capture fine-sized phoneme-to-grapheme units, rendering the syllable effect no longer detectable in more schooled children.
