Abstract (sommario):
Italian neo-emigration in a religious context: a study in Germany Continuous emigration has always been a distinctive feature of Italy. In recent years, however, Italian emigrants have distinguished themselves both culturally and linguistically from the previous migratory flows of Italians. Despite this change, the spiritual and social assistance that the Italian Catholic Church gives to its fellow countrymen abroad is still ongoing. Furthermore, the Italian Catholic Church is particularly interested in the linguistic dimensions, given the fact that its mission is carried out through language and its creed is based on words. This paper aims to identify the awareness of the Italian Church in Germany about the social, linguistic and cultural changes brought about by the new emigration flows from Italy, presenting the results of a survey conducted through interviews and participant observations in two cities in Germany, a country which, for at least three years, has been in second place both in terms of the number of new arrival of Italians and the ones already emigrated.

Abstract (sommario):
A survey on Italian teaching in Hungary Among the several meritorious research experiences on the study of Italian abroad, up to now, a wide-ranging investigation into the Hungarian context still seems to be absent. Although the size of emigration and contacts between Italy and Hungary do not appear quantitatively significant at first sight, the link between the two nations is historically rooted and is still very lively today. There are over 2.500 Italian companies (small, medium or large) in Hungary and according to ISTAT and AIRE data, around 400 people transfer their residence to the Magyar country every year: in the last 5 years the Italian presence has increased by over a third. The contribution intends to offer a specific and in-depth focus on the study of Italian in Hungary. In a global context in which interest in the Italian language seems to be declining, Hungary represents an exception. In fact, there are over a hundred schools where Italian is taught as a second (or even first) foreign language. Italian is at the center of university study programs and various Departments of Italian Studies are active in the main universities of the country, in addition to the activity of private schools and the Italian Cultural Institute in Budapest. Thanks to the use of official statistics and censuses and an ad hoc questionnaire disseminated in the community of teachers, we will try to reconstruct, also in a diachronic key, the situation of teaching Italian as a foreign language in Hungary.

Abstract (sommario):
“New” Italians between Italy and China: language and identity of a new italianity Italy, with its strategic position from a geopolitical and economic point of view, has been a destination for immigrants for more than thirty years, while also continuing to be a country of emigration. Although 21st-century China does not rank among the first countries as a destination for Italian emigration, the presence of the Italian community in China has seen a continuous increase in the last decade. This contribution aims at outlining a sociolinguistic profile of Italian emigrants in China, in which we want to highlight not only the vitality and dynamism of the varieties of the Italian language but also the contact between the Italian community and the linguistic varieties of the host country. The contribution will end with a case study based on a qualitative interview with a parent-child pair representing the first and second generation of Italian emigrants in China. The interview aims at investigating the importance that the varieties of Italian have in intra-family transmission and daily life, and how a language can shape personal identity.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
MAECI and linguistic-cultural promotion initiatives: teaching Italian in Belgium In order to analyse linguistic processes outside the national borders, an accurate exploration of the migratory situation occurring in Belgium following the 1946 bilateral agreements with Italy must be performed. Of particular interest is the question of maintaining the language of origin of Italian immigrants. This paper first illustrates how the Italian state has intervened to promote and implement initiatives for the learning and dissemination of Italian language and culture abroad, going so far over the years as to enter into partnership agreements with French-speaking Belgium. Afterwards, the results of a survey conducted from a sociolinguistic perspective on Italian language and culture at the primary and secondary school level in the Brussels consular district are presented and discussed. The research, conducted on a sample of 449 students, is aimed at understanding what type of users attend extracurricular courses taught by MAECI teachers (teachers in the Italian school and detached abroad for a certain period of time), what is their language of cultural inheritance, i.e. whether they are mostly Italian, of Italian origin or foreigners, Italian-speaking or non-Italian-speaking, thus describing their language habits. Furthermore, the research investigates the motivation behind the choice made by the students to follow such classes. As a result, a complete picture of the linguistic situation of MAECI students is provided which offers interesting insights for reflection.

Abstract (sommario):
THE ONWARD MIGRATION OF NEW ITALIANS TO ENGLAND: RESTRUCTURING OF COMPLEX LINGUISTIC REPERTOIRES AND LANGUAGE MAINTENANCE This article focuses on the effects of onward migration in the linguistic repertoires of families of new Italians who have migrated to England after a long period of life in Italy. Drawing on sociolinguistic interviews undertaken with the elder children of these families, the study finds that Italian is maintained in the family domain, particularly among those who spent more time in Italy. The elder siblings assist their younger siblings in maintaining their Italian proficiency and may use a combination of family languages when communicating with parents when these are not fluent in English. Furthermore, Italian is still being used with friends both in England and back home in Italy, as well as being taken as exam at school. While Italo-Romance dialects are absent from these families' linguistic repertoires, other heritage languages continue to be spoken by parents amongst themselves and with their children; however, maintenance levels vary depending on each family's ethnic background. For some participants, moving to England has also led them to rediscover their linguistic roots.

Abstract (sommario):
This study considers whether or not Italian Muslims are deemed a threat by Italian society. It attempts to verify the major lines of conflict in the relationship between Islam and Italian society, which is by tradition culturally connected to Catholicism. The study investigates different patterns of relationship between Catholic Italians and Muslim Italians in different Italian regions based on the national survey “La nuova religiosità in Italia” [New religiosity in Italy] (2007). By means of research data the authors detect regions with a high potential for conflict and regions where there is greater acceptance of Islam as well as better bases for societal cohesion and cooperation.

Abstract (sommario):
The first step in designing a course is writing the syllabus. This involves deciding the subject matter, the topics covered and the objectives. Today, it is more than ever important also to focus our attention on writing our syllabi to be as inclusive as possible to make all students feel welcome and safe. Furthermore, the materials in of some textbooks do not reflect contemporary Italian society both in language exercises (i.e., not allowing for answers like “voi vi siete sposate”) and in cultural readings (i.e., the woman takes care of the family). This paper focuses on providing suggestions on ways to degenderize an Italian language syllabus and to promote gender equity. Moreover, part of this article focuses on resources and activities to propose in class to help students understand the contemporary Italian society and reflect on the use of the Italian language in the LGBTQIA+ Italian community.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The request, in the context of cross-cultural Pragmatics, has been studied by several researchers, both for being one of the clearest examples of the possibility of doing things with words, as predicted by the Theory of Speech Acts (Austin, 1962), as well as for its potential to threaten the positive face of the speaker and the negative face of the hearer, as postulated by Brown and Levinson (1987). In view of these presuppositions, the research presented here was intended to investigate how Brazilians learners of Italian and native speakers of this language evaluate the linguistic politeness in requests made in Italian, in order to verify if there are similarities or disparities in the perceptions reported by the different groups and what are the elements that can motivate these perceptions. To do this, a sample of eight requests, recorded in audio and video, was presented to Brazilian and Italian informants, who were asked to indicate, on a scale of 1 to 5, the level of politeness of those speech acts, besides indicating, in a set of 19 variables, how much they influenced the reported perception. The corpus collected is composed of 40 Brazilians and 51 Italians and, based on data analysis, we concluded that i) four out of eight requests evaluated by the informants presented similar perceptions and, consequently, four other requests caused different perceptions; ii) some variables (modifiers and aspects such as intonation) had a significant impact on the perception of politeness in general. For each specific request, we concluded that the presence of modifiers does not always influence the perception of politeness, and that the absence of such elements may also have a positive or negative impact. Finally, it was possible to notice that a large number of modifiers does not necessarily result in a high perception of politeness.

Abstract (sommario):
The activity of the Italian Fasci Abroad provides a new perspective on the nature of both Italian and European fascism, as well as on Italy's foreign policy during the 1930s. This thesis focuses on the means employed by the Fasci in the transformation of Italian communities in Great Britain into 'little Fascist Italies'. It argues that fascistisation of Italian emigrants became effective from 1932 and seemed to succeed in creating a corporativist and totalitarian community from 1935-36, until the international crisis of 1938-39 brought that Fascist dream to an end. The Ethiopian war and Italy's alliance with Germany were the most crucial events in the development of the Fasci in their relationship with both the Italian communities and the British government. The thesis also concentrates on the relationship between Italian and British fascism. Until the end of 1934 both the Fasci and the embassy established regular contacts with the British Union of Fascists; in the same period, BUF propaganda reflected the belief that British fascism was part of universal fascism, and that Rome was its origin. BUF's shift from Italophilia to admiration for National Socialism in 1935, and the contemporary unleashing of an aggressive anti-British propaganda in Italy coincided with a worsening in Anglo-Italian fascist relations. Consequently, the Italian Ambassador to London Dino Grandi strengthened his collaboration with British Conservative Italophiles, who worked with the Italian embassy in an attempt to support the cause of Italy and to improve Anglo-Italian relations. The divergence between Grandi's and the Italophiles' beliefs on the one hand and Italy's anti-British propaganda and foreign policy on the other were evident especially from 1938. The attitude of the Fasci Abroad reflected this divergence. Despite the increased centralisation of the Fasci under the control of the foreign ministry from 1938 onward, the Fasci in Britain continued to share Grandi's views on Italian foreign policy. The Fascist press in Britain, strongly anti-British during the Ethiopian war, became pro-British at the beginning of 1938. Grandi saw himself as the man who could prevent war, until Mussolini declared his mission in London at an end in July 1939.

Abstract (sommario):
This study has analyzed the presence of Italian sculptors in Paris from the beginning of the 20th Century to the end of the third decade, with the aim of reconstructing an important chapter of the history of artistic exchanges between Italy and France. We have favored an historical-philological method, based on critical publications and old French and Italian press.Concerning the beginning of the century, we have remarked a considerable participation of Italians in the main expositions in the French capital, such as official Salons; critical and market success allowed them to get a main role in the crew of the most popular artists.During the twenties, we have noted a less considerable participation of Italian sculptors; we have interpreted it in relation to historical context of fascist Italy, where the government was trying to develop a national cultural program. The Italian artists in France, after the First World War, didn't share the new Italian artistic orientation; they went on with outdated aesthetic choices. The last part of our research was interested in the development of the new Italian artistic language, finally known out of Italy. The Italian sculptors consequently could take part in arts activity in Paris, showing the face of a new sculpture, finally aware of its potentialities. France gave these experimentations a good welcome in the aim of constituting a longtime friendship with the Italian country

Abstract (sommario):
The present work aims to recover a part of the history of the Italian-Brazilian Cultural Association in Rio de Janeiro (ACIB-RJ). Among the achievements of this institution for the dissemination and promotion of the Italian language in the state of Rio de Janeiro, this research highlights the case of the Italy Municipal School which, between 1992 and 2012, provided the teaching of Italian in foreign language classes through an agreement between the Italian Consulate in Rio de Janeiro / ACIB-RJ and the Municipal Secretary of Education of Rio de Janeiro. Given the main issue of this research, I tried to understand how the process of implementation and teaching of the Italian language at the Italy Municipal School (1992- 2012) came about, supported by ACIB-RJ. Within this research, I tried to map the conditions offered to the faculty in order to teach Italian, the nature of the didactic material used, the difficulties encountered by teachers and identify the contributions that the teaching of the Italian language brought to the school community researched. In addition to the panorama of the instruction of Italian in Italy School, I sought to discern during interviews, obtained with the help of the oral history methodology (MEIHY; NETHERLANDS, 2007; ALBERTI 2005), the identity perceptions and stereotypes related to their home communities or to the communities which came into contact with the associates of this research. In the analysis section, the data was divided into three categories: (1) History of the Italian-Brazilian Cultural Association; (2) The teaching of the Italian language in Italy Municipal School (1992-2012); (3) Identities and stereotypes in the speech of the respondents. The second main theme was related to the official documents of the federal government and the municipal government regarding foreign language (FL) education and the mentioned cultural role of these teachings in a FL classroom. In the third part of the analysis, the data obtained was related to the concept of identity proposed by sociologist Zygmunt Bauman (2005) and the concept of stereotype proposed by (CROCHIK, 2006; LIPPMANN, 1922; HILGARD et. al., 1989). As will be apparent in this work, the ACIB-RJ was created with the purpose of propagating the Italian language, offering Italian descendants from Rio de Janeiro an education on the language of their forefathers. Besides disseminating the Italian language and culture, the institution sought to facilitate the integration between members of the Italian colony and the Consulate of Italy in Rio de Janeiro. It is also possible to notice that the teaching of the Italian language has contributed in various spheres of life of the students and the school community, which already had a strong Italian heritage. This work aimed to contribute to the recording and documentation of part of ACIB-RJ\'s history, as well as the enterprise of promoting the Italian identity and culture in Italy Municipal School in Rocha Miranda, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Finally, with the investigation of the period when Italian was taught at Italy Municipal School, this work sought to reflect on the teaching of Italian as a FL in the context of public school.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
After the golden age of the city, due to the peninsular bishops and humanists and later through the military and civil architects, the Italians returned as protagonists after 1989, when in Oradea, the third spoken language, after Romanian and Hungarian, became Italian, not only through native speakers, but also through the corollary of speakers around the central native group, employees, collaborators, family, friends. Where there is an Italian, in a professional or private entourage, everyone present becomes an Italian speaker! The closest trusted collaborators of Italian entrepreneurs are always good Italian speakers. The Italians represent a force with significant vitality and impact on the urban demographic and cultural texture. Therefore a still discreet but increasingly evident phenomenon of „re-romanisation” is taking place through presence and language; a presence that is now visible, not only through the economic realities it brings, but which also produces linguistic contamination and transformation.

Abstract (sommario):
Italian influence on Russian military architecture began with the arrival of Italian masters in Russia in the second half of the 15th century. Russian architects were so fond of Italian architectural features that the latter can be traced in Russian architecture even two centuries after the last Italian from that Pleiad left the country. In this work, in order to assess the degree of Italian influence, a statistical approach was, for the first time, applied to the calculation of “Italianisms” in a number of brick-and-stone monuments of military architecture of the late 15th - early 18th centuries.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper reports on an illustrative human rights impact assessment (HRIA) of the Italian wine supply chains of Systembolaget, the Swedish monopoly alcohol retailer. The HRIA aimed to evaluate the actual and potential human rights impacts at the production stage of the value chain in Italy, to identify their root causes, and to provide recommendations to relevant stakeholders concerning their prevention, mitigation and/or remediation. The assessment took just over a year and consisted of five phases of analysis using a methodology aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). However, the onset of Italy’s severe first wave of coronavirus in 2020 meant that the assessment team was unable to conduct the field study phase with the full rigour required of an HRIA. The field phase started in September 2019, with an initial assessment phase based on a literature review and a round of stakeholder interviews from September 2019 to March 2020. Further, limited, worker interviews were conducted from October 2020 to January 2021. The result is an illustration of the human rights risks that are present in the areas of Italy from which Systembolaget sources its wine.
