ABSTRACT: In the Itabira-Nova Era Emerald District, southeast Brazil, gemological emerald is extracted from underground mines found in schist-type deposits at the contact zone of the Archean Metavolcanosedimentary Sequence of the Guanhães Complex and Paleoproterozoic anorogenic granites of the Borrachudos Suite. Schist-type deposits are commonly generated by reactions enhanced by deformation and heat during regional metamorphism. The age of the mineralization in the region has been a matter of debate for decades: Ages ranging from the Archean to the Neoproterozoic are mentioned in the literature. In the mineralized zone from the Piteiras mine fluorine-aluminum-bearing titanite is found in metamafic rocks. The fluorine content was probably derived from the Borrachudos granites and pegmatites like the beryllium for emerald, thus both minerals could have been generated during the same event. U-Pb titanite geochronology via laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was performed on a thin section of a phlogopite-plagioclase-hornblende schist from the Piteiras mine. The determined age of 576 ± 7 Ma is also the probable age for emerald generation during the Brasiliano cycle, which was the only tectonometamorphic event postdating the intrusion of the granites. This event provided heat and fluids necessary for reactions between the Be- and the Cr-bearing rocks, thus enabling the formation of emeralds.

Abstract (sommario):

The rates of atmospheric pollution are increasing in world over the years, which makes this topic more and more concerning. Weather conditions, associated with anthropogenic factors, play a fundamental role in modifying the air quality. In this context, this article aims to analyze the influence of meteorological factors during critical episodes of air pollution in the city of Itabira – Minas Gerais. Hourly air quality and meteorological data, provided by the Municipal Environment Secretariat (SMMA) of the Itabira City Hall, were used in this analysis. A selection of the critical events was made and, after that, the composites and daily anomalies for each event were calculated. The results obtained showed that in the critical days of pollution negative anomalies of precipitation, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity and wind speed were observed. For temperature, solar radiation and wind direction the anomalies are positive during critical days. In terms of emitting sources, there has been an increase in the vehicle fleet since 2014, presenting a positive trend of 1.151 vehicles per year. In addition, a number of 111 fire outbreaks were observed on the most critical day of all events. It is important to highlight the role of air quality control and monitoring, together with the analysis of meteorological conditions, as, currently, the maximum values established by legislation do not include changes in weather conditions, that can worsen air quality and harm the health of the population.

The present study investigated the infection by spotted fever rickettsia in an endemic area for Brazilian spotted fever (BSF; caused by Rickettsia rickettsii) in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Human, canine and equine sera samples, and Amblyomma cajennense adult ticks collected in a rural area of Itabira City, Minas Gerais State were tested for rickettsial infection. Through Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA) we demonstrated the presence of antibodies anti-R. rickettsii in 8.2%, 81.3% and 100% of the human, canine and equine sera, respectively. None of the 356 tick specimens analyzed were positive for Rickettsia by the hemolymph test or Polymerase Chain Reaction technique (PCR) for the htrA and the gltA genes. Our serological results on horses and dogs (sentinels for BSF) appoint for the circulation of a SFG Rickettsia in the study area, however in a very low infection rate among the A. cajennense tick population.

AbstractHematite is a mineral the chemical composition of which rarely differs significantly from stoichiometric Fe2O3. As such, little attention has been paid to the mineral chemistry of hematite in Precambrian iron formations, where hematite forms monomineralic high-grade orebodies. Electron microprobe analysis of hematite from two iron-ore deposits, Cauê (Itabira district) and Gongo Soco, in the Palaeoproterozoic Itabira Iron Formation, Quadrilátero Ferrífero of Minas Gerais, Brazil, has revealed distinct variations in chemical composition with respect to Ti and Cr. Hematite containing Ti and/or Cr is of very local occurrence in the itabirite unit and shows a spatial relationship to hematitic, palladiferous gold-bearing veins (known as ‘jacutinga’), occurring either within the veins (adjacent to, or included in, palladiferous gold grains) or in their vicinity. Where present, titaniferous hematite (to ∼1.3 wt.% TiO2) is lepidoblastic and defines a pervasive tectonic foliation (S1). In contrast, Ti-free, chromiferous hematite (to ∼6.4 wt.% Cr2O3) characteristically occurs as inclusions in palladiferous gold within S1-truncating ‘jacutinga’. Replacement of granoblastic, Ti-free, chromiferous martite with relicts of magnetite by lepidoblastic, Cr-depleted, titaniferous hematite proves that Cr and Ti were mobile during metamorphism. Chromium was ultimately fractionated into the hematite found in auriferous aggregates within cross-cutting ‘jacutinga’. A positive correlation between Cr and Pt in bulk-rock samples from the Itabira district suggests that Cr is a potential prospective guide for Au-Pd-Pt-bearing hematitic veins (‘jacutinga’).

AbstractPalladium-bearing minerals from the Cauê iron mine, Itabira District, Minas Gerais, Brazil, are found in gold-rich jacutinga, a hydrothermally-altered Lake Superior-type carbonate-bearing oxide facies iron-formation. Palladium occurs as: native palladium with trace contents of Au, Fe and Cu; palladseite ((Pd,Cu,Hg)17Se15), which was found in the core of a grain of palladium; palladium–copper oxide ((Pd,Cu)O); and arsenopalladinite (Pd8(As,Sb)3), with inclusions of palladium–copper oxide. The palladium and palladium–copper oxide grains are coated with films of gold and commonly do not exceed 100 µm in width. These palladium minerals occur in hematite bands and in boudinaged bands of quartz and white phyllosilicate parallel to the S1 mylonitic foliation. Palladium-copper oxide also occurs as inclusions in gold grains which are strongly to weakly stretched parallel to S1.Palladium mineralization is interpreted as synchronous with intense D1 shearing and contemporaneous with the peak of thermal metamorphism. At high oxygen fugacities and high temperatures (up to 600°C), Pd may have been transported as chloride complexes and deposited following changes in pH caused by mineralizing fluids reacting with jacutinga. Deposition may also have been prompted by the formation of insoluble selenide and arsenide–antimonide minerals and by the dilution of C1 concentrations in the mineralizing fluid. Textural studies, and the zonation observed in palladium and other hydrothermal minerals, suggest that oscillations in the physico-chemical conditions of hydrothermal fluids occurred during the mineralizing event.

AbstractPalladian gold from the Cauê iron mine, Itabira District, Minas Gerais, Brazil is found in horizons of hydrothermally-altered Lake Superior-type oxide-facies iron-formation locally called jacutinga. Palladium content of the gold grains varies from 1% to 20%, high palladium values being associated with palladium-copper-oxide inclusions and showing island-mainland and replacement (relict) textures in the Corpo Y and Corpo X orebodies. In the Aba Leste orebody, palladium is homogeneously distributed throughout the gold grains.Palladium and gold mineralization was synchronous with intense D1 shearing. Palladium was deposited early during the generation of S1-mylonitic foliation, and was replaced by gold during progressive deformation.At high oxygen fugacities (hematite stability field) and high temperatures (up to 600°C) Pd and Au may have been transported as chloride complexes, and their deposition may have occurred mainly as a result of changes in pH, but dilution of Cl concentrations may have also caused Pd and Au precipitation. Deposition of Pd as selenide may have taken place early during the creation of S1-fabrics.

Knowledge about the groundwater potential is an important tool to sustainably manage groundwater exploitation. In this context, based on the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and multicriteria analysis by the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), this study had the objective of mapping the groundwater potential of the district of Itabira, Minas Gerais, which is one of the largest mining regions in Brazil. The evaluation of the regional groundwater potential was based on thematic maps of land use and cover, soil, geology, slope, lineament density, and drainage density. From the evaluation of these parameters and their classes, weights were assigned by the AHP method, according to the influence of each one with regard to favoring water infiltration and aquifer recharge. The thematic maps were integrated in a GIS environment, generating a groundwater map of the district divided into five classes of groundwater potential (very low, low, moderate, high, and very high). In about 64% of the territory the potential for groundwater occurrence was very low to low and from moderate to very high in about 36%. The groundwater potential map showed that 64.42% of the district of Itabira has very low to low potential indices, mainly due to a number of regional characteristics that make aquifer infiltration and recharge difficult and occur in large areas of the territory.

This paper aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a device to remove scum from the inner part of gas-liquid-solid separators of a full-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor treating domestic sewage, as well as determining the scum yield coefficient for different reactors’ operating conditions. The experiments were carried out at the Laboreaux sewage treatment plant (Itabira, Minas Gerais, Brazil) and the effectiveness of the scum removal device was fully demonstrated, with median efficiencies ranging from 65 to 90%. The average scum yield varied from 6.8 to 14.6 mL of scum formed per kg COD applied.

Lychnophora osanyiniana is a new species from “campos rupestres”, a Brazilian savanna ecosystem constantly threatened by agriculture and mining, despite it having a high number of plant species, particularly endemic and microendemic species. The new species was collected from Sítio Serra da Rita, Serra dos Alves, municipality of Itabira, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The species is recognized by its glomerulate capitulescence with subinvolucral bracts surrounding sessile heads, giving the appearance of a single head. Another distinct character, although it is not exclusive, is an uniseriate pappus, shared by just three species, Lychnophora grisea, L. haplopappa and L. uniflora, of which only L. haplopappa has similar habit, becoming the closest species.

Abstract (sommario):

The emerald composition of the Campos Verdes mining district (Goiás state) was determined by the infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR) and inductive plasm spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results show that the emerald from this region is characterized by relatively high total iron proportions and weight loss ignition, combined with little amount of alkalis (Na+ >> Cs+ > Li+). The infrared spectrum is defined by type II-H2O vibrations. The integration of chemical data with physical and optical properties makes possible to differentitate the Campos Verdes emerald from those Pakistani gems extracted in the mines of the Mingora, Gujarkili e Makhad, as well as from emeralds from Franqueira (Spain), Itabira (Brazil), Colombia, and from those produced in laboratories.

O extrativismo mineral é um dos eixos centrais da formação econômica e social do Brasil. Contudo, o setor mineral e seus riscos ambientais só se tornaram conhecidos do grande público brasileiro após os rompimentos de barragens de rejeitos em Minas Gerais. Com efeito, o modelo de mineração emergiu como um problema no país, interpretado e debatido a partir de diversos campos de saberes. Neste artigo propõe-se uma interpretação literogeográfica da mineração baseada na leitura da obra de Carlos Drummond de Andrade. Para isso, a centralidade das análises apresentadas baseia-se na leitura do poema O maior trem do mundo. Revelam-se as críticas que o poeta fez ao modelo de mineração territorializado em Itabira (MG) e, por extensão, em Minas Gerais e no Brasil. A metodologia conta com revisão bibliográfica baseada na relação entre Geografia e Literatura. A interpretação literogeográfica do poema ou de qualquer texto literário consiste em adensar a leitura do território ou do espaço. E, neste caso, os resultados revelam a importância do texto poético de Drummond como instrumento de percepção crítica e ampla da mineração e suas implicações territoriais.

Resumo: A coletânea, Descendo a Rua da Bahia (2017), torna público escritos íntimos de Carlos Drummond de Andrade e Pedro Nava, que se encontram no Arquivo Museu de Literatura Brasileira (AMLB), da Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa. São 63 documentos, datados de 1926 a 1983, onde os dois autores falam de si, dos amigos, dos projetos de vida, além de fornecerem ao leitor uma descrição da realidade sócio-política do Brasil da época. As cartas, os cartões, os bilhetes e outros documentos testemunham uma amizade que teve início quando Nava, médico recém-formado, escrevia de Belo Horizonte ao Carlos, residente em Itabira do Mato Dentro. Amizade que se fez sólida e que não se dissolveu com o passar dos anos. Para promover uma convivência mais íntima com o material encontrado, a correspondência é contextualizada por notas e enriquecida por fotos. Traz ainda crônicas, discursos e poemas que atestam a afinidade literária que existia entre eles e, sobretudo, a afeição profunda, à prova de qualquer desatino.Palavras-chave: Carlos Drummond de Andrade; Pedro Nava; correspondência; arquivos.Abstract:The collection Descendo a Rua da Bahia (2017) unveils the private writings of Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Pedro Nava. These writings can be found at the Arquivo Museu de Literatura Brasileira (AMLB) of Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa. There are 63 documents, from 1926 to 1983, in which both writers portray themselves, their friends and life projects. While doing so, they provide a picture of the socio-political reality of the country at that time. The letters, the postcards, the notes and other documents published attest an old friendship, which started when Nava, a newly graduated doctor from Belo Horizonte, was writing to Carlos, who lived in Itabira do Mato Dentro. In order to closely approach the material, notes and photographs help to provide a context for the analysis of such correspondence. It also contains narratives, speeches and poems that attest their literary affinity and the deep affection that existed between them, regardless of any madness.Keywords: Carlos Drummond de Andrade; Pedro Nava; correspondence; archives.

Abstract (sommario):

This article aimed to identify how the practices of digital influencers impact the entrepreneurship of the influencers themselves as professionals in the field of beauty and aesthetics in the city of Itabira, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The methodology used was qualitative research approach, descriptive type through multiple case studies. The results revealed that the practices of digital influencers, using the 8 P’s of digital marketing, impact the respondents' ventures as it forces them to know their own business, market and exercise their leadership and self-criticism. It was also found that visibility, disclosure and the increase in customers were the biggest impacts perceived in the projects. Another relevant fact to consider is that most influencers started out of necessity and had to learn to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of their business and that this knowledge makes them able to remain in the market.

Resumo: As fontes renováveis de energia têm ganhado cada vez mais destaque no cenário mundial atual, sendo os pilares da busca pelo desenvolvimento sustentável. A transferência de conhecimento do ensino superior para o ensino médio, com relação aos conceitos e tecnologias de geração de energia com fontes renováveis, é uma ação importante e de responsabilidade social, principalmente quando se diz respeito de universidades com cursos de engenharia que tratam de tecnologias limpas. Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho expõe uma metodologia para transferência de conhecimento do ensino superior sobre conceitos e tecnologias de geração de energia com fontes renováveis, por parte da Universidade Federal de Itajubá-MG, a alunos das escolas de ensino médio do município de Itabira – MG. A metodologia proposta obteve aceitação prática, e bons níveis de satisfação e assimilação do conteúdo, reforçando a importância da difusão do conhecimento na temática abordada. Palavras-chave: Extensão Universitária; Alternativas Energéticas; Conversões; Disseminação do conhecimento; Sustentabilidade.  Popularization of concepts and technologies of power generation with renewable sources in high schools in the city of Itabira, Minas Gerais State, Brazil Abstract: Renewable energy sources have gained more prominence in the current world scenario, being a cornerstone of the theme of sustainable development. The transfer of knowledge from higher education to high school with respect to the concepts and power generation technologies with renewable sources is an important and socially responsible action, especially when it concerns universities with engineering programs dealing with clean technology. In this sense, this article sets out a methodology for higher education knowledge transfer of concepts and power generation technologies with renewable sources from the Federal University of Itajubá - MG to the students of secondary schools in the city of Itabira – MG. The proposed methodology achieved practical acceptance and good levels of satisfaction and assimilation of the contents, reinforcing the importance of the dissemination of knowledge on the theme. Key-words: University Extension; Alternative Energy; Conversion; Dissemination of Knowledge; Sustainability.  Popularización de conceptos y tecnologías de generación de energia de fuentesrenovables em las escuelas secundarias del município de Itabira, Minas Gerais, Brasil Resumen: Las fuentes de energía renovables han ganado más protagonismo en el escenario mundial actual, siendo uno de los pilares de búsqueda por el desarrollo sostenible. La transferencia de conocimientos de la educación superior a la secundaria con respecto a los conceptos y las tecnologías de generación de energía con fuentes renovables es una acción importante y socialmente responsable, sobre todo cuando se trata de universidades con programas de ingeniería relacionadas con la tecnología limpia. En este sentido, este artículo se propone a detallar una metodología que visa la transferencia de conocimientos de la universidad a la escuela secundaria sobre los conceptos y las tecnologías de generación de energía con fuentes renovables. La universidad responsable es la Universidad Federal de Itajubá-MG. La metodología propuesta logró aceptación práctica y un buen nivel de satisfacción y la asimilación de los contenidos, lo que refuerza la importancia de la difusión de los conocimientos sobre el tema. Palabras-clave: extensión universitaria; alternativas de energía; conversión; difusión del conocimiento; sustentabilidad.

O declínio da capacidade produtiva dos solos ao longo dos anos tem sido uma das principais causas do abandono das lavouras em muitas regiões do Brasil. A erosão, a lixiviação, a oxidação da matéria orgânica e a acidificação dos solos são os fatores que mais contribuem para a acelerada degradação da fertilidade natural do solo. O sudeste da Bahia tem maior parte das terras ocupadas por sistemas agrossilviculturais, destacadamente envolvendo cultivos de cacaueiros, o que representa uma excelente estratégia para prevenir a erosão, por esse motivo há pouca oferta de literatura sobre práticas de conservação do solo nessa região. Imagina-se que o conhecimento de técnicas conservacionistas nesta área tem-se apresentado muito deficiente, o que pode comprometer crescentemente o seu potencial agropecuário e ambiental. O presente trabalho tem como principais enfoques a avaliação do nível de conhecimento e a adoção destas técnicas por produtores rurais de nove comunidades da microrregião Ilhéus - Itabuna, com o intuito e subsidiar programas de extensão sobre o tema. Foram entrevistados produtores rurais dos municípios de Uruçuca, Itapé, Itabuna, Buerarema, Itacaré, Ilhéus e Itaju do Colônia, no período de dezembro de 2007 a janeiro de 2008. Os resultados demonstram que os produtores rurais que possuem maior grau de instrução, assistência técnica, menor tempo na atividade agropecuária e consideram suas lavouras como inviáveis economicamente são os que adotam maior número de técnicas conservacionistas. As adoções de praticas de conservação do solo registram apenas os níveis ruim, baixo e moderado, inexistindo os níveis satisfatório e bom.

Pegmatites are rocks of granite or metastatic origin with gigantic crystals that are formed in fluid phase of the magmatic liquid enriched with incompatible elements, thats why they can be considered as gemstones and industrial minerals deposits. Both studied areas in the present article were genererated by anatexia process or partial fusion. The Jatobá Mine in the Pegmatitic Field of Ferros-Antônio Dias, in Santa Maria de Itabira, explores the aquamarine gem, a beryl variety, in a pegmatite that is located closer to the granite system of the quartz core and is docked in a gnaisse granitic rock from the Guanhães Complex. The collected sample was denominated like Quartzo alkali feldspar sienite in the Diagram QAPF. The blue color of the beryl is given by the intrusion of Fe. The Duas Cores Mining represents the Pegmatitic Field of Marilac, near Governador Valadares, and the exploration of bi-color tourmaline will begin soon. This mineral is in a very weathered pegmatite, positioned more at the end of the granite system and docked in the mica-schist rock of the São Tomé Formation. The sample was named Tonalite by the QAPF Diagram. The color variation of the explored gem is related to the enrichment of the Li element at the site.

The paper evaluates and models helminth eggs removal in a combined UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) reactor - maturation pond system (one baffled and one unbaffled pond in parallel). The system is comprised of demonstration-scale units, treating actual domestic sewage from Itabira city, Brazil. The paper addresses the following points: (i) removal of helminth eggs from the wastewater in the system; (ii) comparison of the observed removal efficiency with the predictions using the Ayres et al. model; (iii) accumulation of helminth eggs in the sludge; (iv) viability of eggs in the sludge; (v) distribution of helminth species in the sludge. The removal efficiency of helminth eggs from the wastewater in both ponds was 100% for most of the time (0 counts in the final effluent). The predictions of helminth eggs removal according to the Ayres et al. model can be considered reasonable. After one year of operation, 88% of the eggs in the sludge remained viable. Helminth eggs counts in the sludge tended to decrease along the baffled pond length (from first to last compartment). The prevailing helminth species found in the sludge from both ponds was Ascaris lumbricoides.

O tomateiro para processamento industrial é uma hortaliça que movimenta o agronegócio brasileiro. Portanto, conhecer a dinâmica da produção agronômica e científica a respeito dessa cultura é de fundamental importância para traçar novas estratégias de cultivo e de comércio e, ainda, direcionar novos estudos para suprir as deficiências da cadeia produtiva brasileira. O objetivo do estudo foi reunir informações sobre características gerais da produção e dos híbridos de tomateiro para processamento industrial comercializados no Brasil e ainda realizar um levantamento cenciométrico da produção científica a respeito da cultura. Foi realizado um levantamento bibliográfico sobre a evolução da tomaticultura para processamento industrial no Brasil. Para avaliar a evolução da produção foi quantificado o número de empresas que comercializam sementes e características de híbridos comercializados no Brasil. Para conhecer o comportamento da pesquisa acerca do tema proposto, foi utilizada a base de dados Scopus sendo empregadas como termos de busca as palavras-chave: “tomato processing industrial” no período de 1969-2019. O Brasil é o maior produtor da cultura na América do Sul. Goiás é o Estado que mais cultiva a cultura, sendo os municípios de Cristalina, Itaberaí, Morrinhos, Piracanjuba e Vianópolis aqueles com destaque na produção. Onze empresas comercializam sementes no Brasil atualmente, a maioria com sede internacional. Os frutos apresentam massa entre 80 a 240 gramas e o ciclo da cultura varia de 90 a 120 dias após o transplantio; e ainda apresentam resistências a Fusarium spp., Verticilium spp. e Meloidogyne spp., principalmente. Nas últimas décadas, notou-se um crescimento da literatura em tomateiro para processamento industrial, sendo a Itália é o país que mais publica sobre o assunto. As subáreas Fitotecnia e Ciência dos Alimentos representam maior interesse dos pesquisadores. No Brasil, instituições de ensino e de pesquisa das regiões Centro-Oeste e Sudeste são as que mais se dedicam a esses estudos.

We know that the writer Eliane Potiguara is a voice of resistance in the midst of the erasure of the culture and literature of indigenous peoples, so this paper aims to highlight the role and contribution of this indigenous writer to Indigenous Literature by women in Brazil. Our study is a bibliographical survey of the writer's career, based on other indigenous voices that highlight her importance, as well as an analysis of some fragments of poems from her book Metade Cara, Metade Máscara (2018). As a theoretical contribution, we drew on Castro (2022), Graúna (2012), Mendonça (2012) and Mignolo (2017). We conclude our study by emphasizing that Eliane Potiguara, through her struggles and her writing, consolidates herself as the first indigenous woman writer in Brazil, inaugurating the indigenous women's writing movement in the country.

Background: The anatomy of the canine oral cavity and its variations should be understood to facilitate clinical and surgical approaches. Several conditions can be identified during inspection of the oral cavity, including persistent deciduous teeth, enamel hypoplasia, gingival retraction, tooth abrasion and mobility, absence of dental elements, and periodontal disease. The aim of the present study was to determine the occurrence of dental disorders in dogs older than one year, from the microrregion Ilhéus - Itabuna, Bahia, Brazil. Materials, Methods &Results: A total of 74 dogs were evaluated immediately prior to surgical procedures for periodontal disease treatment. After visual inspection and examination with a millimeter probe, the dogs were classified into three groups according to the degree of periodontal disease. All other findings were recorded on an odontogram. Of the 74 dogs, 23 were classified as mild periodontal disease (mean age, 3.6 years), 26 as moderate periodontal disease (mean age, 5.7 years), and 25 as severe periodontal disease (mean age, 9.7 years). There was significant correlation (0.7 p ≤ 0.01) between age and severity of periodontal disease. Fifteen of the 74 dogs did not present any other dental disorder than periodontal disease. Of the remaining 59, nine showed a single dental problem, and 50 had more than one dental problem. Six dogs (of the breeds Pinscher, Yorkshire Terrier, and Lhasa Apso) had deciduous teeth. Of the nine deciduous teeth, all were canine (dental elements 104, 204, and 304). Ten dogs had dental fractures and of the 11 fractured teeth, three were canine (dental elements 104 and 404). Dental wear was observed in 25 dogs (154 teeth). Of the evaluated dogs, seven showed furcation defects and 10 had teeth mobility. Dental absence was observed in 47 dogs.Discussion: In the present study, increased age had a positive correlation with the degree of periodontal disease; this is consistent with reports in the literature, which indicate severity of periodontal disease increases with advancing age. In one of the three cases of enamel hypoplasia, the dog owner reported that the dog presented clinical signs compatible with distemper before the teeth changed, corroborating studies that showed that this virus can act on the enamel cells causing hypoplasia lesions. All the deciduous teeth found were dental elements 104, 204, and 304, consistent with literature reports that these teeth are among the most frequently affected by this condition. In the present paper, of all the teeth examined, the canine teeth presented the majority of fractures. Canine teeth are used for grasping and tearing food, and defense, and are more vulnerable to fractures. Dental wear was observed in many dogs in the present study, presenting as loss of dental surface caused by friction, abrasion, or erosion from a variety of causes. Dental wear may be considered as a physiological process as long as it does not compromise function. Dental mobility is an important clinical sign of periodontal disease and generates pain and discomfort to the patient; in the presence of advanced periodontitis, there is a marked loss of periodontal tissues, including alveolar bone, which is an irreversible process. As the dogs evaluated in the present study were older than one year, any absent teeth could be verified as being due to periodontal disease. In conclusion, disorders of the oral cavity have high prevalence in dogs and must receive special attention to be properly diagnosed and treated.

Consumption of non-potable water is a relevant public health problem due to the possibility of transporting numerous chemical and microbiological contaminants. In 2005, the Brazilian Ministry of Health created the National Program of Surveillance in Environmental Health related to the Quality of Water for Human Consumption (VIGIAGUA), with the primary purpose of managing risks related to water supply to human populations in Brazilian territory. However, VIGIAGUA does not have a methodology capable of characterizing or managing risks. The objective of this research is to create a working model to transform raw data into conceptual data related to low-, medium- and high-risk levels. The data used in the application of the model were obtained through the analyses of water-quality surveillance conducted by the Regional Health Management of Itabira, a municipality with less than 10 thousand inhabitants, whose history of water contamination is alarming. Twelve samples/month were collected between May 2017 and April 2018. The results of the treated water analyses were classified according to the presence of hazards and categorized into risk levels. The results showed 83.3% contamination by total coliforms at the treatment plant and 91.6% in the distribution system. The Escherichia coli contamination was 16.7% in the treatment plant samples and 45.2% in the distribution system. The system was categorized as "High Risk". The analysis of untreated water samples was carried out for the purpose of knowing the contamination pattern of the raw water of the region, finding 100% contamination by total coliforms and 97.2% contamination by E. coli.

It were identified thirty relevant studies that were also relevant and in accordance to the approached issue. The analysis enabled the Division of the articles in thematic axes, and thus a better presentation of the results and discussion, being them: context of public policies in Brazil, actors and social movements and public policies cycle. The analysis of public policies in Brazil can be considered recent, however with great advances that survived since the Federal Constitution.

Background: Childhood depression is a very prevalent mental health condition in today's society. Its debate began to become relevant in the 1960s and, although there is no doubt about its existence, the subject is still little discussed. Aim: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the relevance of the subject due to its high prevalence and underdiagnosis. Methods: A literature review on Childhood Depression in Brazil was carried out based on researches in Pubmed, Scielo and Google Scholar databases, between 1989 and 2020, in Portuguese and English, using the descriptors: “child depression” , “symptoms of depression” and “treatment of childhood depression” combined together. Textbooks, data from Ministério da saúde, the World Health Organization (WHO) and key articles selected from citations in other articles were used to composse the paper. From the analysis of the data found, twenty-two titles that are directly related to the current work were selected. Results and discussion: In Brazil, girls and children between thirteen and fourteen years old are the most affected by the disease. Currently, the DSM does not differentiate it from adult depression, despite the atypical manifestations of its symptoms in children. Families still have great difficulty on identifying this disorder the biggest obstacle is understanding and accepting that behavioral changes can be part of a depressive condition.Conclusions: Normalizing the discussion of the topic is important so that there is more information about the disease and, consequently, more knowledge is disseminated both to the medical community and the families of affected children. This way, it will be possible to prevent its appearance and, when present, facilitate its detection, improving life quality of those involved and avoiding negative outcomes such as child suicide.

It will demonstrate that the dialogue between Denmark and Brazil in the literary field has more eventful a history than one can imagine at first. Translation and criticism are regarded as two complementary ways to disseminate a literature in foreign places. To the reader who knows little or nothing about the reception of Danish literature in Brazil, this article can provide the initial elements for a further research. There is not any attempt towards comprehensiveness, and this article remains a discrete look of its author’s over the reception of Danish literature in Brazil.

This research aimed at the investigation of an overland flow system applied to the post-treatment of anaerobic effluents. The system treated domestic sewage in Itabira City (Brazil), being composed by an anaerobic reactor and an overland flow system, the latter working as a post-treatment unit. A portion of the reactor's effluent was directed to a group of three overland flow slopes (demonstration scale), that were operated with different application rates. During Phase 1 of the research, the overland flow system was fed under a permanent hydraulic regime (constant flows), having as inflow the effluent from an UASB reactor (full-scale, volume of 477 m3). During Phase 2, the overland system was fed under a hydraulic transient pattern (variable flows with hourly variations), having as inflow the effluent from a partitioned UASB reactor (demonstration-scale, volume of 9 m3). In general, the performance of the overland flow system as a polishing step was very good, mainly because of the low solids and organic matter concentration in the final effluent (average values of BOD from 48 to 62 mg/L; COD from 98 to 119 mg/L and SS from 17 to 57 mg/L). Regarding nutrients and coliforms, the system also reached satisfactory efficiency levels. Based on the experience obtained with this study, it is suggested that overland flow systems, working as post-treatment step of UASB reactors, can work with application rates in the range of 0.4 to 0.5 m3/m.h, which are higher than those normally applied.

With high-interest rates being the norm as this is written, Brazil has little reason to be worried about liquidity traps which have recently resurged in international economic literature. Studies intertwining the Brazilian scenario with them have been sparse. However, Brazil's legislative framework raises alarms: fiscal legislation with the principle of legality as applied in the Brazilian scenario seems to form a problematic situation. The goal of this work is to alert one to the possible undesirable effects, caused by short-sighted legislation should a liquidity trap occur in Brazil, although it does not seem to be a concern in the short term. The methodology we use is descriptive and bibliographical, through a revision of the literature. We conclude that if the argument of a significant part of the literature is thought to follow, the country may find itself in a worrisome scenario.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate Lean Six Sigma (LSS) in the Brazilian context, seeking to identify its main characteristics and opportunities for future research. Design/methodology/approach This study focuses on a literature review in the area of production engineering and operations management, where 104 relevant scientific publications were identified. Findings The results show that the most important critical success factor for integrating LSS in Brazil is top management support and commitment. LSS integration occurs predominantly in large industrial companies, being incipient in small and medium-sized enterprises. In general, there is no structured way of applying LSS. A standard framework for LSS is still lacking. Research limitations/implications This study is limited to a sample that only comprises Brazilian scientific studies. Practical implications Professionals and practitioners can understand the evolution of LSS through practical applications and the main LSS tools used in both the industrial and services sectors. It also points out the critical success factor for the implementation of LSS. The study highlights several roadmaps for LSS implementation adopted by large and modern Brazilian automotive industries based on a robust technological base. This study also contributes to expanding the evidence base of LSS application, both in Brazil and in other countries. Originality/value Some suggestions are proposed to clarify the structure and complexity of integrated implementation of LP and SS as well as expand the LSS application in small and medium-sized enterprises. This study is the first to discuss the current situation of LSS in Brazil and provide suggestions to expand LSS in the country. Comparisons of Brazilian LSS literature review with researches of others countries are also presented.
