This is a rhetorical criticism of the science fiction short story, "Profession," by Isaac Asimov. Primary focus is on Asimov's persuasive use of this message to influence potentially creative young people to consider technological careers. A brief synopsis of the story is given, along with a statement of the functional role of science fiction in accustoming individuals to societal changes resulting from technological advancements.Methodology is based upon Kenneth Burke's dramatism which views human action in terms of a drama. Burke's concepts of identification and occupational psychosis are used in discovering the rhetor's use of persuasive strategies. Burke's pentad is used for analysis of significant ratios. The dominance of the act-scene ratio is demonstrated by the supremacy of action over motion.Asimov's work shows the influence of a philosophy of realism, identifiable by the featuring of the pentadic term "act." Asimov's primary motives are identified as a desire to share his belief in the benefits of technology and his own need for creative self-expression.

The general objective of this dissertation is to analyze the metaphysical aspects of "rational mechanics" of Isaac Newton, clarifying, by scientific and philosophical discourse, their main elements, with emphasis to the presence of one entity infinitely rational behind all the phenomena of nature, and to the Newton's insight as certain empiricist which, however, accepts deductions metaphysics; a philosopher-scientist. The specific objectives are detailed below: a) brief presentation of the development of modern science, since the Pre-Socratics, seeking to understand the historical conjecture that enabled the rise of Newtonian mechanics; b) presentation of the elements of scientific methodology and philosophical, aimed at comprehension of certain "Newtonian methodology", understanding how this specific methodology able to present empirical aspects, mathematics, philosophic and religious in communion; c) to understand, from the Newtonian concepts, both concerning man's role in the world as the "notional notions" of mass, space, time and movement, necessary for analysis and understanding of certain metaphysical aspects in the Newtonian physics; d) to present the Newtonian concepts related to the ether, to understand why it necessarily assumes metaphysics characteristics and mediation between the bodies; e) to present and understand the factors that lead the empiricist Newton to assume the religion in his mechanics, as well as, the existence and functions of God in nature, to object to the higher content of his metaphysics; f) to highlight the metaphysical elements of his classical mechanics, that confirm the presence of concepts like God Creator and Preserver of the natural laws; g) at last, to analyze the importance of Newton to the modern metaphysics and the legacy to philosophy of science at sec. XVII to science contemporary

An analysis of Newton’s main life events and works highlights how his scientific commitment has always been followed by a living interest for theology, Biblical exegesis and alchemy. Chiefly due to a late re-discovery of a great bulk of Newtonian manuscripts, scholars have been able to enquire into the true nature of these documents. Yet nothing has been said about a possible influence of alchemical knowledge over Newton’s Biblical exegesis. One of the main goals of this Ph.D. thesis of mine is to suggest some possible hypotheses about the interaction between Newton’s alchemical mind and his millenarianism. A key role in the development of my criticism will be played by the analysis of some previously unpublished manuscripts gathered in the Yahuda Collection (Jewish National and University Library of Jerusalem).

In this essay the remastered version of the video game The Binding of Isaac- The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, has been analysed on how it will fit as an educational material in the Swedish upper-secondary school. The portrayals and thematics in the game that is compatible for discussion in the ethic and moral field has been compared to two points from the curriculum for religious studies in the Swedish upper-secondary school, regarding ethic and moral arguments, theories and models. The parts of the game analysed is split in to two main groups: the Abrahamic religion’s position in the ethic and moral dilemmas in question, and how the discussions regarding the ethic and moral-compatible portrayals and thematics in upper-secondary school classroom’s could evolve. I concluded that the video game would be compatible with education in the upper-secondary school, though it’s up to the responsible teacher, regarding the time aspect, and how the teacher would consider the game to be received by pupils.

Although Isaac Watts wrote hymns in the early eighteenth century, some of his hymns, such as “Joy to the World,” “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed?,” and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” survive today as well-known hymns. However, little has been written about the rhetorical effects of his hymns. This thesis demonstrates that, like any other literary work, Watts’ hymns can be analyzed rhetorically. This thesis analyzes Watts’ hymns with the aid of Louis Montrose’s New Historicism, showing how Watts’ hymns were impacted by the English culture in which he lived and how they impacted the religious culture to which he belonged and preached: the Dissenters. Watts’ hymns were not the only texts that had an impact on the Dissenters. The psalters were considered by many (Calvin, in particular) to be the only acceptable songs for use in worship. Watts responded to this belief with his hymns, showing that God could be praised in other reverent ways. Watts hymns were successful for many reasons, including their easy-to-understand language, their vivid images, and their ability to focus on the heart of man. Watts used his hymns to help Dissenters keep away from error, particularly the new religion of Deism and the sin of pride. Looking through the lens of New Historicism, Watts’ hymns are rhetorical texts, impacting the culture of Dissenters and responding to the larger English culture. Watts possessed great skill as a writer, poet, and preacher, and this thesis shows how his hymns had a thorough impact on the Dissenters’ culture.

En 1924-1925, en Russie, de nombreux écrivains s'engagent dans le cinéma, deviennent scénaristes, membres appointés des studios, trouvent là un second métier. Certains cherchent à créer un genre nouveau : le kinoroman. Babel est de ceux-là et son scénario "l'Ascension de Benia Krik", commandé en 1925 par les studios de Moscou, est l'illustration de cette tentative. Inspirée des "Contes d'Odessa", l'œuvre est écrite pour Eisenstein. Le "cinéroman" reprend les thèmes majeurs de l'univers babélien : conflit père/fils, homme/femme, tradition/novation, révolte individuelle/organisée. . . Il présente également les qualités formelles qui imposèrent la prose de l'auteur de "Cavalerie rouge" comme l'une des premières de son temps et firent dire à Eisenstein qu'"un récit de Babel, c'est déjà 75% du matériau dont un cinéaste a besoin". Des similitudes frappantes avec l'écriture du réalisateur de "La Grève" et du "Cuirassé Potemkine" - montage des attractions, images choc, construction parodique des personnages - font de ce scénario un terrain d'observation privilégié des affinités souvent constatées mais peu étudiées entre Babel et Eisenstein. En intégrant délibérément à son cinétexte les procédés techniques du 7e art (angles de vision insolites, gros plans, intertitres) l'auteur achève de donner au genre hybride du kinoroman un véritable statut. Les difficultés de la genèse et du tournage du scénario reflètent les contraintes du partzakaz sous la NEP. Ce sont elles qui, en dernière analyse, sont responsables de la faillite du projet de Babel et d'Eisenstein, faillite qui préfigure celle du "Pré de Béjine" dans les années trente, sous Staline
In 1924-1925, in Russia, a large number of writers began working for the cinema, became script-writers, appointed members of movie studios, and thus found a second occupation. Some of them tried to start a new genre : kinoroman. Babel is one of these and his screenplay "The Career of Benia Krik", commissioned in 1925 by the Moscow studios, illustrated this attempt. Inspired by the "Odessa Tales", the work is written for Eisenstein, director at the same studios. Kinoroman uses the main themes of Babel's universe : conflict between father/son, man/woman, tradition/innovation, individual revolt/collective one. . . It also has the formal features - fragmented plot, prominence of the rhythm, of the pictures - that impressed the prose of the writer of the "Red Cavalry" as one of the best of its time and led Eisenstein to comment that "a story by Babel, it is already 75% of the material a film maker needs ". Striking similitude with the writing of the film-director of "The Strike" and "The Battleship Potemkin" - montage of attractions, shock-images, parodical characters - make this film script a particularly useful field of observation of the affinities, often established but rarely studied, between Babel and Eisenstein. By deliberately integrating in his cinetext the technical methods of the 7e Art (including unwonted angles of shots, close-ups, intertitles), the author finishes to give the kinoroman hybrid genre a genuine status. The difficulties during the genesis and the shooting of the scenario reflect the constraints of the partzakaz during the NEP. It is those, finally, which are responsible for the failure of Babel's and Eisenstein's project, failure which prefigures that of "Bezhin Meadow" in the thirties, under Stalin

ABSTRACT This research is carried out to explore the poetry of Isaac Rosenberg whose poetic works featured as war poetry. The First World War poetry of Isaac Rosenberg, Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen and Ivor Gurney among others ushers in a new tendency in the history of English Literature distinctive in the Modern period. These men explored the Great War which is also known as the First World War (1914-1918). In their poems are to be found ideas, writings which express extreme emotions like fear, anger, hatred etc. Their voices combined and were heard, each wrote from their personal experience of the military events in Europe during the First World War. The poems they wrote become a call to national consciousness and conscience. Most of them were icons of innocence, vulnerability, courage and integrity. Among these poets is Isaac Rosenberg whose works form the topic for this thesis. Isaac Rosenberg who was born in 1890, in a Jewish family belongs to the group of war poets whose writings gained prominence during this period. He participated in the war until his death. Among the poems that gained prominence for him is the lyric Drenched in the trench among other poems. The aim of this research is to explore the Poetry of the First World War by using Isaac Rosenberg as a case study. In this research, I explore the link between Isaac Rosenberg and the First World War, write about him, analyze his poems and know why he is called a war poet. The biography of Isaac Rosenberg seen against the background of modernism, the First World War, and war poetry will form the first chapter of my research. In chapter two|, I reviewed all the literature available concerning the poet and his poetry. What people have said about him, the things that dominated his poetry and written about the First World War Poetry. In other to find the link between Isaac Rosenberg and First World War poetry, four of his poems written from 1914-1918 were analyzed using literary tools. Background studies for each of the chosen poems were written. The Tone/mood, structure, language and other literary features were found in them. Chapter four revealed the fact that First World War is a product of historical events in Europe; soldier poets told their own story through poetic rendition. These War poets discussed one central theme which is the War and its destruction. This was expressed as their personal and social anxiety attached by writers to the subject of individual mortality. Hence, I argue that the poetry of the Great War used language as seen in the extensive use of metaphor and images which revealed atrocities, instabilities, lack in consolation, an era of human brutalities and modern legalised death. This is a clear examination of the emotional, intellectual, moral, ideological and aesthetic responses to the Great War in the poetry of Isaac Rosenberg.

Isaac Rosenberg was more than just a war poet, and a general failure to take this into consideration has contributed to the belated recognition of the distinctions of his work. He started writing long before the Great War and, as a working-class London Jew, he schooled himself to respond to issues of class, culture, art and poetry. It was this combination of dependency and self-sufficiency which sustains his mature work; and which gave him a sense of himself as an Anglo-Jewish poet. In order to illuminate Rosenberg, Chapter One considers the conditions ofthe Jewish community in the East End of London at the turn of the century, and examines the writer's attitudes to the Zionism in vogue at the time. Chapter Two investigates the striking echoes of Freudian psychology which feature in Rosenberg's work, and which are related to the Jewish heritage of both writers. Chapter Three investigates Rosenberg's feminine principle, suggesting that, as part of an Orphic vision of art, it fused an allegorical 'female god', with seductive females familiar from Jewish narratives, effectively combining English and Hebrew cultures. Chapter Four traces Rosenberg's working-class literary heritage, and suggests that his treatment of class differs from his Gentile contemporaries in that it parallels Freudian and Marxist perceptions, while manifesting a modem Jewish insight. Chapter Five details the role class and race played in the critical marginalising of Rosenberg; special attention is given to the 'Georgian' literary ideals of the period, against which Rosenberg reacted and which influenced his reputation and the reception of his poetry. Chapter Six focuses on Rosenberg's debts of origin, and his 'anxiety of influence', uncovering his revision of his precursors, in light of a modem urban, and Jewish perspective. The thesis concludes by examining Rosenberg's idea of language as a vehicle for mental essence, suggesting that the roots for this perception lie in the painter's mind, along with class and race associations.

Este ensaio tem como objetivo apresentar uma leitura do livro O exército de cavalaria, do escritor Isaac Bábel (1894-1940). A leitura empreendida buscou investigar as relações dialéticas entre o texto ficcional e a História, uma vez que as narrativas de Bábel abordam a Campanha Russo-Polonesa, ocorrida entre 1920 e 1921. Ao mesmo tempo, as formas particulares de representação do heroico e do épico, que permitem compreender O exército de cavalaria como uma espécie de epopeia falhada, conduziram a uma reflexão a respeito do realismo babeliano e da possibilidade de caracterizar o seu livro como um romance. Nele, fragmentação, a organização não linear e episódica dos conflitos, a recusa à ordem cronológica e a variedade de narradores e vozes do texto parecem, todos, encenar a dificuldade de a forma romanesca tradicional incorporar esteticamente uma matéria contraditória e convulsa.
This essay aims to present a reading of the book Red Calvary, from Isaac Babel (1893 - 1940). The perusal undertaken sought to investigate the dialetic relations between History and fictional texts, once the Bábel\'s narratives approach the Russian-Polish Civil War, which occurred between 1920 and 1921. At the same time, the particular forms of representation of the heroic and of the epic allowed to understand Red Calvary as a kind of failed epic and conducted to a reflection about babelian realism and the possibility of characterizing his book as a novel. On the book, fragmentation, non-linear and episodic organization of conflicts, the refusal to chronological order and the variety of narrators and voices of the text seem to stage the difficulty of the romanesque traditional form to aesthethically incorporate the experience of the war and of the contradicting and convulse matter. Isaac Watts was a dissenting minister, theologian, philosopher, hymn writer and poet in the first half of the eighteenth century. Despite exercising significant influence over dissent and beyond he remains an understudied figure. In particular there has been little attempt to find coherent patterns of thought in his works. We examine Watts' view of the role of reason and the place of passion in the Christian life. These are shown to be foundational themes in his thought. In particular they lie behind his more practical works which attempted to bring reformation and revival to the church of his day. On reason Watts in many ways followed Enlightenment thought as expressed by John Locke. However he departed in significant ways which echo his Puritan background. As a result Watts is shown to be an ‘Enlightenment Puritan' on this topic. On passion Watts accepted some of the view of the new sentimentalist thinkers but again continued significant elements of Puritan thought. Hence on both these areas Watts is shown to hold a modified Puritan position, modified that is in the light of the new thinking of his day. Watts' position on these foundational topics is then shown to lie behind his attempts to revive religion in the areas of preaching, praise and prayer. Watts' distinct views on these practical topics are shown to flow directly from his view of reason and passion. Hence in a time of increasing rationalism and sentimentality in the church Watts attempted to bring revival because of his modified Puritan views on reason and passion. As a result Watts' thought is shown to have a far greater degree of consistency than has been previously appreciated. It is not claimed that Watts has been relocated but that we have located him far more precisely.

Resumo: Esta pesquisa apresenta um estudo sobre o conceito de força gravitacional na filosofia da natureza de Isaac Newton. O presente texto foi elaborado a partir dos argumentos desenvolvidos por Newton para defender esse conceito em sua obra mais importante, o Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687). Será visto que, em tais argumentos, Newton restringe o conceito de força gravitacional a partir de um tratamento matemático, que ele próprio elaborou em sua obra. Por outro lado, Newton argumentava, como físico, sobre a necessidade de fornecer uma explicação adequada das leis e conceitos relacionados à experiência. Assim, o programa de Newton deve conter uma explicação de como os princípios matemáticos, dos dois primeiros livros, poderiam ser aplicados ao mundo dos fenômenos, tarefa a qual ele se edicou no Livro III do Principia Mathematica. Por último, é necessário dizer que o conceito de força gravitacional na filosofia da natureza de Newton só pode nos oferecer um resultado significativo quando analisado de um duplo ponto de vista, a saber, o da mecânica racional, isto é, sua “ciência do movimento”, e o da filosofia da natureza, isto é, do “sistema de mundo”.

This is a history of communication, specifically those communications found in past (imagined) communities which augmented, shaped and renegotiated shared culture. This culture, perceptible during the late Georgian era in public forms such as books, pamphlets, prints, performance, architecture, paintings and a wide range of ephemeral material, positions itself inextricably within the visual imagination. This then is also a history of visual communicative cultures, of the various shapes and forms that occupied the ocular registers of past peoples. Graphic satire was one of these contemporary visual forms and it is therefore a task of this thesis to place this printed single-sheet medium within the lives and cultural perception of late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century Britons; specifically, due to where these satires were published, Londoners. Like all historical sources, graphic satires present specific challenges. They were publicly facing compositions designed to shock and provoke; outwardly packed with sex, titillation, violence and prurient curiosity, framed by lewd, deliciously vicious and bawdy narratives, and set against the dirt and grime of London's streets. Hence satirical prints were as much an aspect of rude culture as visual culture, yet this does not mean they had nothing serious or important to say. Indeed one of the major thematic agendas of graphic satire in this period concerned notions of British liberty. It is therefore the central task of this thesis to unpick how and why this medium represented libertarian values in the way it did.

This dissertation contains a Hebrew edition and annotated Catalan translation of Isaac the Blind's (1165-1235) Commentary on the Book of Creation. The introduction introduces the historical context in which the author lived as well as some biographical data and the intellectual influence from Jewish Andalusian culture in the text. It further analyzes the relationship of the author's philosophy with other schools of thought, as the ones in Troyes and Paris, as well as his neoplatonic influences. It proceeds to a detailed analysis of the author's views on epistemology, cosmology and anthropology which, while act as breaking points with previous mystical views, at the same time they set the platform for the development of medieval kabbalah.
Aquesta tesi presenta el text en hebreu, i una traducció anotada al català del comentari escrit per Isaac el cec (1165-1235). L'estudi previ que acompanya la traducció introdueix el context històric en què va viure l'autor així com la seva biografia i les relacions que l'autor va tenir amb els corrents intel•lectuals provinents de l'Al-Andalus. Analitzem els referents culturals del mon cristià en l’obra, especialment les escoles de Troyes i París, així com la influència del neoplatonisme. This study reassesses the relationship between the monumental collection of Henricus Isaac's mass-proper cycles published as the Choralis Constantinus and the composer's original massproper projects. The first section charts changing views of Isaac as a historical figure, from his time to ours. Following this, the second section pursues the implications of recent redatings of major Choralis sources with a detailed investigation of the transmission of the Choralis' s music from composer to print. This analysis suggests new views for the make-up of each of the projects known to have been compiled together in the print: the earlier theory of a Constance Common of Saints is dismissed, whilst a mass-ordinary that may have belonged to the Constance project is identified; it is suggested that Isaac's mass-propers for the Imperial court cannot easily be seen as a single project, and that some anonymous propercycles not found in the Choralis may be Isaac's and may have belonged to Imperial repertory. To shed further light on the original scopes of Isaac's mass-proper projects, the third section of this thesis investigates Isaac's non-Choralis mass-propers. Particular attention is given to the large collection of such items found in two related manuscripts from latersixteenth- century Augsburg. Examination of the context and function of these manuscripts suggests that the unica they preserve attributed to Isaac are spurious. On the other hand, consideration of the Choralis's transmission and the shape of Isaac's secure Imperial repertory suggests that some anonymous cycles in the manuscript WeimB A are Isaac's. The final part of this study re-examines the attributions and de-attributions made in the first two sections at a music-stylistic level. No conflicting evidence is found. On the contrary, all earlier suggestions are reinforced.

The story depicts a trial following the cir-cumcision of a boy against his parents’ will, and thus directly addresses issues of high relevance at the time, namely the transformations of religious life in the early years of the Soviet Union. Firstly, I have analyzed the references to Jewish culture that appear in the story. Further on, drawing on research by other scholars, I have examined the shift of the traditional Jew into a Soviet Jew—a highly secular subject deeply involved in the socialist society and far removed from the traditions of the Pale of Settlement. Lastly, I have studied the narrator’s perspective, which, being far from objective, plays a major role in portraying the trial and is of key im-portance for understanding the transformation of Jewish life that occurred in the Soviet Union in the 1930s. At the end of the story, the narrator deprives the reader of the verdict and gives in-stead his attention to the circumcised boy. I argue that he thus focused on the future rather than on the conflict between tradition and secularism.

In this thesis, I study the themes of identity and memory in Isaac Marion’s Warm Bodies. Marion’s 2011 novel is an example of the paranormal romance genre: the novel’s plotline revolves around a romantic affair between a human and a paranormal being, a zombie. However, the story also illustrates its zombie protagonist’s quest for a lost personhood. The author explores issues of identity and memory through the macabre metaphor of death, which, however, is seen as a psychological rather than a physiological state. The zombie mythos has developed alongside western popular culture for the past century. The living dead have been used to illustrate various prominent issues in the public sphere, and their iterations have changed in response to globally remerkable events. Thus, the study of the zombie mythos is also study of contemporary culture. It is, however, unconventional that Marion’s novel is narrated from the point of view of a zombie. This inspired me to ask what is so special about the zombie mythos that makes readers wish to identify with the monstrous. The aim of this thesis is therefore to find meanings for the imagery of zombiedom in Warm Bodies and relate these to popular culture. The central research questions in this thesis are how identities are constructed in Warm Bodies and how memory contributes to the construction of identities. Moreover, I ask what, in the novel’s reality, defines zombiedom compared to humanness, or what traits are required for a character to classify as a living person. I approach the subject through the theoretical framework of memory studies, a multidisciplinary field of study that deals with various memory phenomena. I will use Paul Ricoeur’s phenomenology of memory as the basis of my classification, with some terminology from the realm of psychology. In my analysis, I move from the level of individual memory to the collective. My methods, on the other hand, rely on phenomenological analysis of the novel’s characters. Identities in Warm Bodies are constructed synchronically, diachronically and socially. The author challenges the synchronicity of identity by presenting a dualism of the body and the soul. However the mind-body problem is also issued on a more corporeal level, as consciousness and memory can be transmitted through corporeal means. The diachronic aspect of identity manifests as the characters use autobiographical reasoning to mend their broken identities and personal timelines. In the case of the zombies, their permanent amnesia has lead to a loss of identity. The zombies consume brains in order to acquire their victims’ personal memories and thus simulate forming social connections through cannibalism. However, the novel also presents less destructive ways of developing social bonds: collective memory can be formed through various media, such as text or music. Personhood in the novel is a matter of conscious effort: the past must be deliberately organized into meaningful wholes. Language, on the other hand, is an important signifier of personhood as it enables persons to form social bonds. The final person-making characteristic presented in the novel is imputability: the characters must assume responsibility of their past deeds in order to be forgiven. Forgiveness, on the other hand, is essential to leading a life as a person. One of the central functions of zombie imagery in Warm Bodies is therefore to illustrate the issues of changing identities in social contexts
Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastelen identiteetin ja muistin teemoja Isaac Marionin teoksessa Warm Bodies. Marionin 2011 ilmestynyt romaani edustaa paranormaalin romanssin lajityyppiä: sen keskiössä on romanttinen suhde ihmisen ja yliluonnollisen olennon, zombin, välillä. Romaani kuitenkin kuvaa laajasti myös päähenkilön identiteettityötä. Marion tutkii muistin ja identiteetin ongelmia kuoleman metaforan kautta. Kuolema nähdään romaanissa kuitenkin enemmän psyykkisenä kuin fyysisenä tilana. Zombimyytti on kehittynyt länsimaisen kulttuurin rinnalla lähes sata vuotta. Eläviä kuolleita on käytetty kuvittamaan mitä erilaisimpia aiheita kulttuurin saralla, ja zombimyytin muoto on muuttunut globaalisti merkittävien tapahtumien seurauksena. Zombimyytin tutkimus on siis yhtä lailla nykykulttuurin tutkimusta. Silti on poikkeuksellista, että Marionin teoksessa kerronta tapahtuu zombin näkökulmasta. Tämä inspiroi minua tutkimaan, mikä zombimyytissä saa lukijan haluamaan samaistua hirviöön. Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena onkin löytää merkityksiä zombikuvaston käytölle romaanissa sekä rinnastaa näitä populaarikulttuuriin. Tutkielmassa kysyn, miten identiteetti rakentuu Warm Bodies -teoksessa ja mikä on muistin funktio identiteettityössä. Lisäksi kysyn, mikä romaanin maailmassa määrittää zombin ihmiseen verrattuna, tai minkälaisia ominaisuuksia vaaditaan, jotta henkilöhahmo voidaan luokitella ihmiseksi. Lähestyn aihettani muistintutkimuksen (memory studies) näkökulmasta. Muistintutkimus on monitieteinen tutkimusala, joka tutkii monenlaisia muistin ilmiöitä. Pohjana työlleni käytön Paul Ricoeurin muistin fenomenologiaa, mutta hyödynnän myös psykologian termistöä. Analyysissäni siirryn yksilön tasolta kohti kollektiivista muistia. Tutkimusmetodini on henkilöhahmojen fenomenologinen analyysi. Marionin romaanissa identiteetit ovat synkronisia, diakronisia ja sosiaalisia. Teoksessa kehon ja mielen dualismi haastaa identiteetin synkronisuutta. Toisaalta kehon ja mielen ongelmaa tarkastellaan myös korporeaalisemmalla tasolla, sillä tietoisuutta ja muistia voidaan teoksessa välittää myös ruumiillisesti. Identiteetin diakroninen puoli ilmenee, kun teoksen henkilöhahmot rakentavat identiteettejään narratiivin kautta. Zombien tapauksessa muistinmenetys on johtanut myös identiteetin menetykseen. Zombit syövät aivoja saadakseen itselleen uhriensa muistot ja käyttääkseen niitä omien identiteettiensä rakentamisessa. Toisaalta kannibalismin kautta pyritään simuloimaan kommunikaatiota ja sosiaalisia suhteita. Romaanissa kuitenkin esitetään myös rakentavampia tapoja muodostaa suhteita: muistia voidaan välittää myös esimerkiksi tekstin tai musiikin kautta. Identiteetti romaanissa vaatii tietoista yritystä: menneisyys täytyy järjestää merkityksellisiksi kokonaisuuksiksi. Kieli puolestaan määrittelee henkilöyttä, koska se mahdollistaa toimimisen sosiaalisissa konteksteissa. Kenties keskeisin henkilön ominaisuus teoksessa on vastuun ottaminen menneisyydestä ja omista toimista, sillä se mahdollistaa anteeksiannon. Anteeksianto puolestaan on välttämätön ehto ihmisyydelle. Yksi zombikuvaston keskeisistä funktioista teoksessa onkin kuvittaa muuttuvan identiteetin ongelmaa sosiaalisissa konteksteissa

The solo piano works of Isaac Albéniz have been extensively transcribed and performed by many guitarists. Granada, the first movement from his Suite Española for piano is a favourite amongst guitarists - sometimes even more so than amongst pianists. This dissertation offers a comparative analysis of the very first transcription of Granada by the renowned Romantic composer and guitar virtuoso Francisco Tárrega, and a more recent transcription by Stanley Yates. The aim of the study is to identify and critically evaluate various transcription techniques employed by these transcribers, in order to determine the extent to which their transcriptions of Granada are similar and different.

Isaac Despuech, poète montpelliérain du XVIIe siècle, publie en 1636 un recueil de poésies en langue d’oc intitulé Les Folies du Sieur le Sage. L’identité de ce poète, qui signait « D. Sage », fut longtemps un mystère ; tour à tour désigné sous le nom de « David Sage », puis de « Daniel Sage », on se rend compte que « Sage » est un surnom familial. La confusion ne s’arrêta pas là, Despuech a longtemps été décrit par ses biographes comme un débauché, un fils de cabaretier, sans éducation et sans aucune teinture des belles lettres. L’œuvre du poète montpelliérain abonde en satires et en allusions grivoises, ce qui a sans doute choqué les lecteurs. Resumo: Essa dissertação analisa o chamado "problema de Newton", isto é, o problema de conciliar conceitualmente a inatividade essencial da matéria com a evidente atividade na natureza representada pela força de gravitação universal. Num primeiro momento, temos por objetivo examinar a gênese desse problema e, num segundo momento, os argumentos que Newton desenvolve procurando rebatê-lo
Abstract: This thesis analyses the so-called "Newton's problem", that is, the problem of conceptually conciliating the essential inactivity of matter with the evident activity in nature represented by the universal gravitation force. In a first moment, we are intended to examine the origin of this problem and, in a second moment, the arguments Newton develop in order to solve it
