Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This article attempts to show that, in opposition to analytical and phenomenological traditions, when Bergson examines the epistemological problem of the measurement of sensations, he tries to connect it with the philosophical question of human freedom, which science cannot solve. It is not possible to conclude that every philosophical problem is a scientific problem. But philosophy does not come first. It needs an indirect approach and a metaphorical language. As Bergson says, intuition is riding intelligence. The problem of measuring sensation concerns the difficulty of establishing sensation as a mental object or a representation that can be compared or distinguished from others. What sensation does is not separate from what it does to us. It is not only something thought, it is something lived and connected with duration, like human freedom, which is nothing but a specific feeling. This living is not a phenomenological illusion, it is a naturalistic puzzle. If we take the Bergsonian conclusion, sensation is simply a spiritualistic reality. We contest this dual approach, but we try to separate this wrong solution from the very accurate puzzle that Bergson presents us with.

Abstract (sommario):
T he status of medical doctors is relatively high in society. However, in spite of this acknowledged status, physicians are not aware of the extent to which they have the ability to care for patients or how much effort they should make to meet people’s expectations. Therefore, we should examine what society asks of doctors and how doctors need to be educated to meet the expectations of society. In this article, the author asserts that physicians need four skills. First, doctors should know how to speak and communicate. In the work of a doctor, language is the most important for tasks such as understanding texts, communication with patients, analyzing data, and starting new projects. Second, doctors should have intuition. In a doctor’s medical judgment, intuition is very important and it can initiate from an educated guess. In other words, good intuition can be developed based on a good educated guess, which in turn can derive from one’s explored knowledge, communication with one’s inner dialogues, and good interpretation skill. Third, doctors should have creativity. Doctors should produce an image about patients from intuition, and those intuitions are based on creativity. Usually, students in medical school have creative ability; therefore, the instructor should facilitate their learning to connect this creativity to free imagination ability and medical skills. Fourth, doctors should be humane. Patients want to communicate with doctors about their disease and further about their lives. The reason why a humane doctor is important is that this humane approach itself could cure patients and reduce their pain. When a doctor’s humane attitude is realized in the hospital, the patients and doctors could be pleased sincerely.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Both intuition and rationality can play important roles in strategic decision making. However, a framework that specifically accounts for the interplay between intuition and rationality is still missing. This study addresses this gap by using a paradox lens and conceptualizes the intuition–rationality duality as a paradoxical tension. We draw on seven case studies of innovation projects to empirically derive a three-step process for managing this intuition–rationality tension through paradoxical thinking. Our empirical data suggest that management of the tension starts with preparing the ground for paradoxical thinking by creating managerial acceptance for the contradictory elements of rational and intuitive approaches to decision making. The process then continues by developing decision-making outcomes through the integration of intuitive and rational practices. Finally, the outcomes of paradoxical thinking are embedded into the organizational context. For each step of the model, we indicate a set of practices that, by leveraging intuitive or rational characteristics of decision making, practitioners can use to deal with this cognitive tension in the different steps of our model.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – This qualitative study of managers’ use of intuition in the selection process aimed to understand if and how managers use intuition in employee hiring decisions and suggest ways in which the use of intuition might be improved. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with managers from a range of backgrounds, and with varying experience of recruitment and selection. Findings – Findings revealed that reasons for the use of intuition included personal preferences, resource constraints and recognition of the limitations of more structured approaches. Intuition was used an indicator for performance, personality and person-environment fit. Intuition tended to be used with requisite caution; participants were aware of its limits, the potential for bias and the difficulties in justifying its use; several participants used their intuitions in concert with more structured, non-intuition based approaches. Research limitations/implications – The small-scale investigative study has limited generalisability. The paper concludes with five specific recommendations on how to improve managers’ understanding and use of intuition in employee selection. Originality/value – Despite increased interest in intuition in management there is a paucity of qualitative studies of intuition-in-use in management in general and in personnel in particular. This research helps to fill this gap.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAlthough the use of intuition in managerial decisions has been documented, many questions about the intuitive process and its antecedent stages remain unanswered, in particular the role of affective traits and states. The study reported in this article investigates whether decision makers who are more attuned to own emotions and experience a particular mood have an easier access to intuition. Our findings indicate that emotional awareness has indeed a positive effect on the use of intuition, which appears to be stronger for women. Surprisingly, positive and negative mood seem to influence intuition according to their intensity rather than positive/negative distinction.

Abstract (sommario):
Communication is an intuitive as well as cognitive process. In order to develop the brain skill of intuition, it is sometimes necessary to shut down cognitive (left-brain analyses and pay special attention to intuitive (right-brain) ways of knowing. The brain hemispheres work differently and yet in conjunction. This article suggests techniques for developing intuitive brain skills. Mandalas, “other” hand writing, and positive affirmations can be used to improve intuitive skills.

These reasons are cognitive-methodological, because knowing them and guided methodology lead to the creation of the human world, mostly poor and inhumane, and the necessary correction. The cognitive method that offers to the phenomenological method, the core of which consists of intuition, reduction of intentionality, as opposed to those methods that dominate the rational basis. In fact, in a dualistic relationship rational and intuitive knowledge lies the possibility of establishing a better foothold as a refuge or unity of the world and man, and providing opportunities for their improvement or humane given. Thoroughness is the knowledge, the cognitive experience as such it contains always one intentio, a ?producing? a moment which is always related to some objectivity, and that it is not this objectivity nor mere subjectivity, but one in which the both meet. Thus, the intention and the secret lies the foundation for understanding the world, and she in turn in its nakedness is always a straightforward procedure as the immediate unity of subject and object of knowledge or something intuitive.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractFew writers have examined the contextual determinants of intuitive decision-making and none has examined the differential contribution to explaining intuition made by different perspectives on context. This study seeks to supply what is absent by examining the overall impact of combinations of variables representing three different perspectives (decision, environment and firm) on the use of intuition when making strategic decisions. The results indicate that the characteristics specific to the firm and to the environment appear to be more significant to intuition than does the nature of the decision; and that the impact of the contextual variables varies from one dimension to another. The research limitations are discussed and suggestions for future research are also offered.

Abstract (sommario):
A long-standing dilemma in theories of management surrounds the question of whether effective managerial action is better served by ‘rational analysis’ or ‘creative intuition’. In the present article, analysis and intuition are conceived within a framework of cognitive style in which a distinction is drawn between the processing of information (rational and intuitive) and the organizing of information in memory (local and global). Such styles are thought to affect a range of management behaviours (including decision-making). The relationship between managers’ cognitive styles and firm performance was examined from a contingency perspective in which environmental instability was hypothesized as moderating the relationship between style and performance. The study was based upon data obtained from owner-managers and managing directors of small and medium-sized firms in two contrasting sectors. There was a positive relationship between intuitive decision style and contemporaneous financial and non-financial performance that did not appear to be moderated by environmental instability. Furthermore, a statistically significant relationship between intuitive decision style and subsequent financial performance was observed. The implications of these findings for theories of cognitive style, the management of small and medium-sized enterprises, and for the practice of management development in such firms are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Although research has tried to lessen the cognitive burden for job analysts by decomposing the decision process, findings have been ambiguous. This ambiguity may stem from overlooking the idea that analyzing jobs involves intuitive processes that decomposing hinders, at least if the job analysts have much job experience (i.e., job incumbents). Furthermore, job incumbents’ intuition might be particularly advantageous if complex items are used. Focusing on the job of paramedics, we found that incumbents’ ratings were more accurate than laypersons’ ratings if the job was presented holistically, whereas laypersons were more accurate when the job was decomposed. Results also showed an analogous Job Experience × Item Complexity interaction. These findings indicate that the role of intuition for analyzing jobs deserves more attention.

Abstract: The doctrine of religious freedom contained in the Council document Dignitatis Humanae, has a "fundamental intuition" about the better understanding of the value of personal conscience as a guide in the search of the truth and in doing good deeds. This same intuition, learned by Mons. Juan Larrea from St. Josemaría, a lover of freedom, could be the best door open for a sincere dialogue —and mutual learning— between the Church and the contemporary world, in historical moments of constant change and an extremely sensitive assessment of individual and collective freedom, at least in Western thought.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractI examine the two-level utilitarian case for humane animal agriculture (by R. M. Hare and Gary Varner) and argue that it fails on its own terms. The case states that, at the ‘intuitive level’ of moral thinking, we can justify raising and killing animals for food, regarding them as replaceable, while treating them with respect. I show that two-level utilitarianism supports, instead, alternatives to animal agriculture. First, the case for humane animal agriculture does not follow from a commitment to two-level utilitarianism combined with a commitment to respecting animal lives. Second, the two-level utilitarian case falls prey to a compartmentalization problem and cannot uphold both respect and replaceability. What I call ‘humane lives’ are not appropriately valued by the lights of two-level utilitarianism itself.

Abstract: Poets use sensory imagery and perception, memory and experience, free association and contemplation to join psychic and material worlds, and to honour both emotional and discursive truths. Through multiple drafts, free-writing and research, the author unpacks her own reflections and poems to demonstrate the process by which intuition and personal insight are crafted for public understanding. This poetic process suggests that scholarly discourses of the arts and the humanities need not always fall into the quantitative/qualitative binary, but that both heart and mind are required to some degree in the seeking of wisdom. Abstract (sommario):
The unstructured employment interview is one of the most popular selection tools among employers and applicants alike. Although past research has shed light on some explanations for practitioners’ preferences for unstructured methods, less is known about the reasons for their popularity among applicants. One reason might be that applicants overestimate recruiters’ intuitive abilities to make judgments about applicant characteristics based on resumes and interviews. The results of this study (N = 345) suggest that recruiters are perceived as much better than laypeople at making judgments about applicants based on resume screening and interviews, and that faith in recruiters’ intuition predicts process favorability for unstructured employment interviews. Moreover, this association remained significant when accounting for attitudes to structured interviews, perceived recruiter expertise, and attitudes to holistic versus mechanic methods in general. The results suggest that overestimation of recruiters’ intuitive expertise may help explain why many people prefer unstructured selection methods.

Abstract (sommario):
This research is a search for spiritual intuition in the management literature. Spiritual intuition research is slight compared with research into other types of intuition (creative, expert, moral and social). This article: (a) searched and reviewed research on spiritual intuition in management; (b) identified Frances Vaughan as one of the primary exponents of the concept; (c) traced backwards from Vaughan into transpersonal psychology and Jung; (d) found evidence for spiritual intuition in the work of Willian James and Abraham Maslow; (e) identified links between spiritual intuition and other types of intelligences and capabilities. This article adds a fifth type of intuition to the four extant types and shows how it is relevant for management. The types of intuition are related, but they draw on different source disciplines (Jungian/ transpersonal/humanistic psychology in spiritual intuition, mainstream behavioural science in the case of the other four types) and have different implications for management. A framework is presented encapsulating the five types, and spiritual intuition is proposed as being an intuition that is fundamentally different in type in terms of its ontology, epistemology, and methods of inquiry.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractSome truths cannot be accessed ‘cold’, from a detached and impersonal standpoint, but require personal commitment and even moral change in order for the relevant evidence to come to light. The truths of religion may be of this kind. Moreover, recent work in psychology and neurophysiology suggests that our knowledge of the world comes in different forms, the detached critical scrutiny associated with ‘the left-brain’ and the more intuitive and holistic awareness mediated by the ‘right brain’. Much contemporary philosophy privileges the former kind of knowledge, but in areas such as religion this may be a mistake.1

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents results from an empirical study conducted with a subliminal teaching technique aimed at enhancing learner's performance in Intelligent Systems through the use of physiological sensors. This technique uses carefully designed subliminal cues (positive) and miscues (negative) and projects them under the learner's perceptual visual threshold. A positive cue, called answer cue, is a hint aiming to enhance the learner's inductive reasoning abilities and projected in a way to help them figure out the solution faster but more importantly better. A negative cue, called miscue, is also used and aims at obviously at the opposite (distract the learner or lead them to the wrong conclusion). The latest obtained results showed that only subliminal cues, not miscues, could significantly increase learner performance and intuition in a logic-based problem-solving task. Nonintrusive physiological sensors (EEG for recording brainwaves, blood volume pressure to compute heart rate and skin response to record skin conductivity) were used to record affective and cerebral responses throughout the experiment. The descriptive analysis, combined with the physiological data, provides compelling evidence for the positive impact of answer cues on reasoning and intuitive decision making in a logic-based problem-solving paradigm.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper we describe a five-stage phenomenological model of skill acquisition, of which expertise is the highest stage. Contrary to the claims of knowledge engineers, we argue that expertise in general, and medical expertise in particular, cannot be captured in rule-based expert systems, since expertise is based on the making of immediate, unreflective situational responses; intuitive judgment is the hallmark of expertise. Deliberation is certainly used by experts, if time permits, but it is done for the purpose of improving intuition, not replacing it. The best way to avoid mistakes is to take responsibility for them when they occur, rather than try to prevent them by foolproof rules. In bureaucratic societies, however, there is the danger that expertise may be diminished through over-reliance on calculative rationality.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Drawing on the research of Martha Nussbaum, the article focuses on the “devastating” crisis experienced by modern education systems entailing their consistent subordination to the dominant economic logic and the resulting neglect of the literature and humanities in the school curricula. According to Nussbaum, should this trend continue to prevail, very soon the education systems will be simply producing generations of efficient machines incapable of human empathy and devoid of any critical reflection. Literary education, Nussbaum emphasizes, can not only help cultivate empathy and humane attitude towards the other, but also become one of the main factors in developing these traits. Stimulating the active emotions and imagination of the children, literature encourages them to think about others, about strangers with whom their real life experience will not give them the opportunity to meet. Reading literature helps one to build an inner intuition for the common human vulnerability, and thus counteracts the temptation to respond to human imperfections and weakness by pursuing total control.

Abstract (sommario):
The crises and problems in Islamic education theories and practices can be solved through the thought of contemporary Islamic education experts. This paper examines Sa’id Isma’il ‘Ali’s thoughts on the Fundamentals of Islamic Education from an epistemological perspective involving three academic problems: sources, objects and methods of Islamic education. The contributions of the Formulation of Sa’id Isma’il ‘Ali’s thoughts on the Fundamentals of Islamic Education adopts the reasoning method of Islamic Law (Fiqh) and Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh) scholars. More comprehensive than the ideas of other thinkers who tend to be general, i.e. the Qur’an and al-Sunnah. In terms of sources, the Fundamentals of Islamic Education are divine (Ilahi) and humane (Bashari). In terms of objects, the Fundamentals of Education aims to realize the content of the Holy Qur’an specifically and the teachings of Islam generally. In terms of methods, the Fundamentals of Islamic Education involves empirical, logical and intuitive methods.ABSTRAKKrisis dan problem yang mendera pendidikan Islam dapat dicarikan alternatif solusinya melalui kajian pemikiran pakar pendidikan Islam kontemporer.

Abstract (sommario):
Research on design and designers has emphasized the tacit nature of the aesthetic knowledge that these professionals draw upon to make decisions about formal properties of objects and spaces, but is less clear about how design teams address the difficulties associated with expressing and sharing this type of knowledge. A ten-month ethnography in a design consultancy revealed a range of multimodal and cross-modal ways in which members of a design team compensate their imperfect capacity of articulating verbally their aesthetic knowledge in order to enable creative collaboration. In so doing, our study offers two main contributions. It illuminates the interplay between designers’ aesthetic experiences, visceral responses and intuitive cognitive processes that enable designers to draw upon their aesthetic knowledge to support the collective accomplishment of their task, and provides an interpretation of the design process as a form of ‘creative’ intuition driven by emotional reactions to environmental stimuli and emerging formal solutions.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
AI explanations are often mentioned as a way to improve human-AI decision-making, but empirical studies have not found consistent evidence of explanations' effectiveness and, on the contrary, suggest that they can increase overreliance when the AI system is wrong. While many factors may affect reliance on AI support, one important factor is how decision-makers reconcile their own intuition---beliefs or heuristics, based on prior knowledge, experience, or pattern recognition, used to make judgments---with the information provided by the AI system to determine when to override AI predictions. We conduct a think-aloud, mixed-methods study with two explanation types (feature- and example-based) for two prediction tasks to explore how decision-makers' intuition affects their use of AI predictions and explanations, and ultimately their choice of when to rely on AI. Our results identify three types of intuition involved in reasoning about AI predictions and explanations: intuition about the task outcome, features, and AI limitations. Building on these, we summarize three observed pathways for decision-makers to apply their own intuition and override AI predictions. We use these pathways to explain why (1) the feature-based explanations we used did not improve participants' decision outcomes and increased their overreliance on AI, and (2) the example-based explanations we used improved decision-makers' performance over feature-based explanations and helped achieve complementary human-AI performance. Overall, our work identifies directions for further development of AI decision-support systems and explanation methods that help decision-makers effectively apply their intuition to achieve appropriate reliance on AI.
