Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to identify household members’ income sharing, when the amount of said income is governed by a particular household member. The results are expected to provide insightful evidence that identifies who is under the poverty line within families. This will illustrate the intra-household allocation inequality by observing the members’ household income dominance. Using the information on household income management obtained from the Japanese Household Panel Survey data (1993–2013) and the original Internet survey, this paper develops an alternative methodology to estimate the household income distribution of couples. A two-step estimation process was employed to estimate the wife’s manageable income equation. Then, the parameters were substituted into the husband’s manageable income equation to estimate the parameters for calculating the wife’s sharing rule. The results are as follows. First, a wife’s share of intra-household resources positively correlates to her manageable income resources. However, wives have weak power in expending the transferred income from their husbands. Second, the remarkable feature is that, on average, wives share 37% of the resources, meaning that the wives’ relative bargaining is weaker than the husbands’. Narrowing the gap in terms of hourly wage between husbands and wives is a crucial tool to reduce the intra-household allocation gap. Third, the wives’ relative intrahousehold income allocation improvement is associated with household environment sustainability activities. To improve the intra-household income allocation inequality, we provide an original approach to explore the intra-household head of household members’ relative income sharing. The results highlight the inequality of intra-household income distribution and confirm that reducing the income gap would be a crucial improvement factor.

Abstract (sommario):
Intra-household allocations appear to be quite important in the determination of time use, human resource investments, and intra- and inter-generational transfers in developing countries. The nature of such allocations has important implications for the efficiency, equity, and efficacy of the micro and macro-economic policies. In the past decade and a half, there has been substantial progress in modelling intrahousehold allocations in ways that lead to testable propositions despite enormous data limitations regarding the nature of the allocation of unobserved variables and the impact of unobserved heterogeneous endowments. The parent -child exchange literature is a subset of these studies that advances in two dimensions by allowing children to have different preferences from their parents' and by incorporating a broader notion of interactions, including the attention provided by the children to their parents. Yet this literature has most of the problems that are indicated with regard to the unified household preference models. The exchange literature to date has assumed away het" erogeneity in endowments which plays such a critical role in the studies that assume the unified household preferences. It is also silent on how human resource investments enter into the relations between parents and children. The collective models of household behaviour emphasise that different household members. usually husband and wife. may have different preferences and a different command over resources. Interesting theoretical results have been derived concerning the conditions under which the income-sharing rules and the allocation of non-assignable goods can be derived. But there are many limitations in this literature. The literature on the collective models of household behaviours is static and gives little consideration to the dynamic processes and learning.

Abstract (sommario):
Persisting gender inequities across political, economic and social life have spurred the global agenda to re-examine the triggers and consequences of gender disaggregation in household resource allocations. Defining and measuring intrahousehold allocations has been at the centre of the current debates among international development scholars and practitioners. The lack of clear consensus on intrahousehold public good allocation has consistently limited widespread efforts to design and evaluate programmes and policies aimed at improving women’s welfare. Based on intrahousehold allocation models, this paper proposes a conceptual framework which can accommodate the welfare of the household as an economic entreprise. Building on Sen (1989) and Kabeer (1999), this paper selectively reviews the abundant literature that offers insights into intra-household decision- making process and gender relations. The review illustrates the importance of intrahousehold allocations and describes a set of individual strategies that household agents use to by-pass intrahousehold negotiations and to secure private consumption. In many of the instances where inefficiencies have been identified in the data, a possible immediate cause is individual behaviour aimed at securing personal resources and consumption. Even, if they come, at the expense of total resources available to the household. Although, it need not be the case that such strategic behaviour are necessarily the source of inefficiencies, they may well be feeding the flames of suboptimality in household production entreprises.. That said, the paper clearly iterates circumstances under which non-cooperative behaviour of spousal income hiding could be vital to circumventing social norms which undermine Pareto productive efficiency. The paper further highlights the role played by collective resistance of social forces to economic changes that threaten social norms and gender roles. The study pinpoints evidence of collaborative efforts to stop women from embracing new economic opportunities that overturn traditional roles. Investigating the role played by household structure in reaching Pareto optimality for inefficient rural households, the paper concludes that neither monogamous nor polygynous conjugal units attain higher margins of efficiency. Instead, household agents played dictator games in public good allocation and responded opportunistically to private choices and strategies which optimized secret consumption.

Abstract (sommario):
The gender wage gap is a critical measurement of gender equality in the labor market. On the demand side in the labor market, gender differences in labor pricing can shape the household decision regarding intra-household resource allocation. Understanding how labor pricing, namely wages, affects the resources allocated to women is important to improve womens welfare in developing countries. Previous research focuses on the effects of gender norms in China, such as son preferences, on intra-household resource allocation. This paper examines how the gender wage gap affects the resources allocated to women within the household. To capture the wage shock in the labor market, I construct the gender- specific Bartik variables. The results indicate that the increases in female-to-male wages between couples improve womens nutrition intake. This work serves to inform about improving womens welfare in the family and labor market.

Abstract (sommario):
In the theory of microeconomics, in discussions related to consumer behavior, it is usually assumed that the household acts as a decision-making unit like an individual, and for a household, a budget constraint and a utility function are considered. As a result, only the general behavior of the household will be observable and analyzed. Since the 1980s, this method, which is called the Unitary Household Model, has been criticized theoretically and empirically, and issues such as the inequality of household members have been raised. In contrast to the Unitary Household model, Collective Household Model was proposed in consumer behavior. According to this method, in multi-member households, each member has their own preferences, and what can be important between these members is the intra-household bargaining process. In this article, at first, we will give an introduction including the theoretical foundation and the background of the research, then, while introducing the unitary model as an introduction to collective models, we will examine the collective model and inta-household collective models. At the end, the contents are summarized and suggestions for future research are presented.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Food allocation is a fundamental aspect within households, seemingly capable of being distributed evenly among household members, especially among siblings. However, several factors can lead to differences in food allocation among siblings. Method: Using data from IFLS 4 and 5, with food variety as a proxy for food allocation, this study examines two influential factors on food allocation: birth order and imperfect fertility control status. Additionally, this study attempts to elucidate the mechanism of the birth order effect using the aforementioned imperfect fertility control status. FIndings: The findings of this study reveal a negative effect of birth order on household food allocation. Moreover, children with undesired status or belonging to families with undesired status due to imperfect fertility control tend to have lower food variety. Conclusion: However, this study cannot causally explain the mechanism behind the negative effect of birth order through imperfect fertility control status. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study analyzes the effects of birth order and fertility control status on household food allocation, finding adverse effects of birth order and unwanted status on food variation. As a novelty, this study proposes the development of a family-based nutrition intervention program that considers intra-household dynamics, aiming to reduce the gap in food allocation between siblings and improve children's overall nutritional status.

Abstract (sommario):
Through the use of a stylized, age-based eligibility feeding programme, we attempt to quantify the benefit of having individual- (as opposed to household-) level food intake data when it comes to targeting food transfers on the basis of age. In this context we show how optimum age eligibility cut-offs depend on the availability of intra-household data on food intake. Second, we provide quantitative estimates of the valeue of intra-household information and of knowledge of the process of intra-household allocation of calvies. Age proved to be a good indicator of individual calorie deficit. However, this was not the case with household-level calorie adequacy, which rendered age apparently less useful as a targeting instrument, often at considerable calorie cost. Food sharing within the household, on the other hand, rendered age impotent as a targeting instrument because of within-household leakage. If age is to be used as an effective eligibility criterion for a food transfer, the implementation of that transfer has to ensure minimum leakage to other household members. This type of exploratory analysis is one step toward quantifying the usefulness of intra-household data in the design of nutrition interventions. The costs of collecting intra-household data may outweigh the benefits, but the experiments presensed begin to answer questions about the costs of not collecting them.

Abstract (sommario):
In Brazil, female-headed households disproportionately experience food insecurity. However, empirical and theoretical evidence shows that women are better than men at allocating intra-household resources to achieve well-being. In observation of this paradox, the present work studies the process of poverty feminization, and presents a collective decision model to understand the vulnerability situation of women. Specifically, we aimed to observe how time use and food insecurity correlate. We estimated an ordered probit model with Brazilian National Household Sample Survey data. Our studies found that women manage a double burden of both paid and unpaid jobs. This increases their risk of food insecurity, confirming the importance of time allocation in household well-being. Conversely, this effect is inverted when household tasks are shared with another member, specifically the spouse. Single mother households still face several challenges, which require specific policies and studies.
